WCW/nWo 1999: The Turnaround

Recommended Posts

http://i1297.photobucket.com/albums/ag29/wwfvsnwa/WCW1999/wcwlogo_zpsf50864f5.png

Start Date: December 1998, yes not actually 1999 but will be leading into that year, changed to December to allow me to hopefully correct the many mistakes WCW made in that month building to Starrcade.

Ratings War: At this point it is pretty much neck and neck in the ratings, the WWF have began to take the lead although the odd week when WCW has had a hot angle for example the Warrior/Hogan build up they have been able to beat the WWF.

Storylines: WCW's main storylines in the second half of 1998 have mostly been intertwined, the Wolfpac vs nWo Hollywood is the main one however with Randy Savage and Sting from the Wolfpac taking time off and Hollywood Hogan only appearing part time that battle has died down. The streak of Goldberg has continued at the moment he is 170-0 but there is talk of it ending sooner rather than later due to fan reaction dying down for the champ. Ric Flair vs Eric Bischoff is another top feud which has led into the return of the Four Horseman and them feuding with Bischoff's group, nWo Hollywood.

Plans: To change the focus of the company and create new, better storylines heading into 1999 but firstly to prevent the mistakes that were made at Starrcade 1998 and put together a better card than what we were given in real life.

Changes: The game begins the day after World War 3 1998 with all the champions and everything remaining the same, the only change is that WCW Monday Nitro has returned to 2 hours instead of 3.

Program Synopsis

The revolutionary show introduced to wrestling fans by Eric Bischoff in September 1995 changed what wrestling is today. It's prime time slot on Monday nights going head to head with WWF Monday Night Raw kicked of a ratings war the likes no one had ever seen before. With both programs looking to but out the best wrestling and the hottest storylines it creating a boom in the wrestling business, one even larger than in the mid to late eighties. Wrestling has become the consistent highest rated show on cable television because of this boom and now WCW Monday Nitro airs each and every Monday night in spectacular high definition and in sold out arenas all across the world.

The early battle between Raw and Nitro was even with neither side getting the spectacular ratings they get today but then an invasion from The Outsiders plus the addition of Hulk Hogan to form the New World Order saw ratings explode and WCW become the kings of wrestling and television ratings. The WWF have been fighting back, using a new cutting edge style of television to gain back and get new viewers, right now both shows are back to being neck and neck around the 5.0 mark and it is unknown who will win this war.

One of the reasons I wanted to get back to writing was looking at my 97/98 WCW diary although many things were different to real life some things that could have been big, like Bret Hart's debut and the eventual finishing of the nWo weren't done creatively and were too similar to real life (especially the Bret Hart debut I think it was pretty much the same as real life when it had the potential to be much, much bigger). So I'm hoping with this one to go against the norm a little bit and hopefully let's say a few months into the game to have totally or mainly different storylines to what was happening in real life.

In reality we all know what went down at Starrcade in 1998. We all know what a terrible idea that was. I'd avoid having Goldberg facing Nash, just in case he decides he doesn't want to put Goldberg over, and you have to end the streak.

I'm hoping Goldberg's streak continues, and he some how ends up in a program with Bret Hart. Goldberg vs Bret Hart at Starrcade 1998 would really be a great thing.

Nash makes the most sense, as the WW3 winner. But something tells me you likely won't go that way. Sting is out, Goldberg just got done facing Page. Bret was technically injured at this point, working through an injury anyways. Flair and the Horsemen are occupied. If Nash and Hall are busy... of your main eventers who would make a huge draw at Starrcade, I'd say that pretty much only leaves Hogan.
