Where The Big Boys Play

To be number one, that is the current objective set by Ted Turner to Eric Bischoff. Bischoff took over the day to day running of WCW in late 1994 and has helped turn the company around since then, the progress has been remarkable. He took over when buyrates had sunk to a dismal level, attendances and all round revenue was at it's lowest in years and the product had little to no buzz surrounding it. The first big move he made was using Ted Turners ego and target to become number one against him and made him splash out big to get the biggest name in professional wrestling Hulk Hogan to join the company, Hogan added prestige and brought name identity to WCW and all of the sudden wrestling fans became interested in the product again. Next was the introduction of more big stars like 'Macho Man' Randy Savage and Lex Luger as well as the company getting a prime time television slot on TNT and going head to head with the WWF for one hour every Monday Night.

WCW is in a very comfrotable spot in 1996 but looking to push ahead and achieve greatness in this upcoming year. Recently Randy Savage & Ric Flair had a several month battle for the WCW World Championship before eventually The Giant entered the title picture and became the current champion. Two factions joined forces, The Dungeon of Doom and The Four Horseman in order to get rid of Hulkamania but when that plan failed the two groups split and now an upcoming war between the two is set to take place. Hulk Hogan is still the number one man in the business but is starting to grow stale in the eyes of some and may need a character tweak in the upcoming months. Stars like Lex Luger, Sting, Arn Anderson and The Giant have managed to solidify themselves as main eventers and work alongside people like Hulk Hogan, Savage and Flair. The introduction of international stars has brought a new life to WCW with stars like Konnan (the current US champ), Jushin Liger, Alex Wright, Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit exciting the WCW fans with their innovative style of wrestling. The tag team division is full of talent like the Blue Bloods, Nasty Boys, Harlem Heat, Sting & Luger, Legion of Doom, Meng & Barbarian, Fire & Ice and The American Males, the talent doesn't stop their though as rumors have been speculating one or two big tag teams may be joining WCW in the near future.

Nitro is currently going head to head with RAW and is doing very well, both shows are bobbing up and down in the ratings and exchanging victories but are always remaining around the 3.0 mark. WCW has a stacked upper card of the roster and is trying to develop a lower card on WCW Saturday Night reports say a potential idea for a 'Cruiserweight' division is up in the air at the moment which would replicate a light heavyweight division from a company like NJPW. Ted Turner continues to pump money into this company and is being rewarded with great success, right now WCW is where the big boys play, can they solidify a status as the number one wrestling promotion in America? Can they continue to grow and make new stars? It's time to find out...

The owner of WCW Eric Bischoff started the show informing the fans of his plan to bring more international superstars to WCW to create the most exciting division in the history of wrestling. Alex Wright is a young, exciting star from Europe who has brought his A-game since joining WCW but tonight he faced a tough challenge in Brian Pillman who has been more dangerous and out of control than ever since joining the Four Horseman. The battle could have went either way but the aggressive nature in Pillman's offence gave him the edge and allowed him to get the win after 6:36 with Air Pillman.

Lex Luger's great form as of late is giving him the push at a future World title opportunity but for now he has to focus on keeping his current titles and tonight he face Earl Robert Eaton, the new recruit of the Blue Blood stable. The former Television and Tag Team champion Eaton put on a impressive display but the power of Luger was what made the difference, Eaton submitted to the Torture Rack after 7:25 in one of the best matches of the night. Luger makes defense one of the Television title.

Post match the Blue Bloods, Regal and Taylor hit the ring hoping to 'rough up' the Television champion but before the three could take advantage of the numbers game, Sting ran down and made the save and sent the Blue Bloods into retreat.

Scott Norton's career hasn't taken off in WCW due to his commitments in Japan but he still has a big presence and good following of fans. Booker T is one half of one of the most successful tag teams of this era and looks to thrive as the tag team division is only getting stronger. Booker managed to pick up the victory over the big man following a distraction from Stevie Ray and he landed the Harlem Hangover.

</div>

Post match Harlem Heat grab microphones and Booker declares there is not one team in wrestling that compares to them, past or present and that no team will ever be in their league. Right on Que The Steiner Brothers music plays as they make their anticipated return to WCW since leaving NJPW. The Steiner's soak up the atmosphere before running to the ring and chasing off Harlem Heat and then posing for the fans delight.

The Horseman vs The Mega Powers

Match Type:
Standard Tag Match

Time Limit:

Referee:
Nick Patrick

This huge tag team match was a surprise to most and delivered big for WCW in the head to head ratings with the WWF. Four of the most recognisable faces in wrestling collided in a strong match technically and in a brawl based style. All four needed a win to solidify their claim to be next in line at a world title shot but the outcome of the match was not decisive. Hulk Hogan dropped the leg on Arn Anderson and looked to be just three seconds away from victory when Flair attacked him and Savage with a steel chair causing a disqualification.

</div>

Straight after the match Flair and Anderson continue to attack Hogan and Savage and the other members of the Horseman, Pillman and Benoit join them. The Dungeon of Doom, Hugh Morrus, Meng and The Barbarian, led by Kevin Sullivan rush to the ring to get revenge on the Horseman following the split of the two groups which were once aligned as one. The Dungeon of Doom's help inspires a fight back in Savage and Hogan who start to dominate the Horseman until the reigning WCW World Heavyweight Champion The Giant enters the fold and takes out everyone in sight with a dominant series of attacks. The Giant closes the show delivering bone crushing Chokeslam's to Hulk Hogan, Randy Savage, Ric Flair and Arn Anderson.

The momentary miss communication allowed Guerrero to roll up Pillman and get the victory.

With all due respect, you have five diaries on the first five pages. I struggle to follow any of them despite the fact that they all seem to be interesting concepts.

I apologise for that, I usually start with a good plan of things but lack inspiration to do them, i guess all i can do to change that is keep this diary going strong for as long as possible which i will try to do.

Match Type:

The feud between the Blue Bloods and Lex Luger looks to be building as they once again got a shot to take the Television title from Luger. The technical prowess of Lord Steven Regal allowed him to shock the fans and Luger by taking firm control of the match early on. The power and energy behind Lex Luger led to an exciting come back and as he got Regal in position for the Torture Rack the match came to an abrupt halt as Squire Dave Taylor and Earl Robert Eaton attacked Luger and the referee called for a disqualification.

</div>

Once again Lex Luger's partner Sting had to make the save to prevent Luger from getting triple teamed but this time Sting grabbed a microphone and laid out a challenge to the Blue Bloods to stop running from them and to fight him and Luger at Slamboree and told them that they will even put the Tag titles on the line if it means getting their hands on the Blue Bloods.

Match Type:

Referee:

The rivalry between Randy Savage and Ric Flair has been on going for several months and has mostly surrounded the world title with them exchanging the belt several times. This match was to decide who will get the next shot at The Giant and was an excellent match on a night full of great matches, but this one was PPV quality. The hatred and determination from each man to prove they are the best of all time was evident as the two went all out to get the victory. In the end the match was decided by Kevin Sullivan who came to the ring following Nick Patrick being accidentally taken out, Sullivan laid a beat down on Ric Flair who he blamed for the split of The Dungeon of Doom and The Horseman. The fans were delighted with the attack as it allowed Savage to capitalize with a Flying Elbow Drop and score the victory.

</div>

A furious Ric Flair recovered and immediately looked to get revenge on Sullivan and the two went into the crowd brawling. In the ring the macho man continued to celebrate but that was cut short by The Giant who attacked Savage from behind and then delivered a Chokeslam to close the show.

Kevin Sullivan vs The Giant

Referee:

The Taskmaster Kevin Sullivan and his Dungeon of Doom have recently had a change of heart and turned face, now battling against the Four Horseman and Ric Flair in particular as the rivalry has become very heated. The World Champion, The Giant looked impressive heading into his title match with Savage in just two weeks but struggled to put Sullivan away, in the end it was not a Chokeslam but the help from Ric Flair who attacked Sullivan down at ringside which allowed The Giant to get the victory.

</div>

After the match, just like last week Sullivan and Flair went into an all out street fight although this time they were joined by Pillman and Benoit who began to fight with The Barbarian and Meng who came down in aid of Sullivan. Eventually Eric Bischoff stopped the action with many security guards bringing the six man fight to a close, Bischoff than took time to announce at Slamboree it will be Kevin Sullivan vs Ric Flair and Meng & Barbarian vs Benoit & Pillman.

This action packed main event combined several small feuds into one and made for a good match, it also gave DDP and Robert Eaton a chance to get in there and mix it up with the wrestlers who are currently at the top of WCW. Not surprisingly the super face team won with Randy Savage getting the victory after a Flying Elbow Drop on Earl Robert Eaton.

</div>

After the match Randy Savage cut a promo on how at Slamboree he will become a giant killer and end the reign of terror that has been upon WCW since The Giant capture the World Title. This prompted The Giant to come to the ring and the two got physical, despite the heart and determination of Savage, The Giant got the upper hand and ended the show Chokeslamming Randy through the announce table.

A rematch from the very controversial bout that took place at SuperBrawl this year, however this time no controversy was involved and it was an all out fight from the two competitors. The strap was used as a weapon many a time during the match and both competitors came out with a bright red, scared body and felt the effects of the grueling match. Sullivan picked up the win heading into Sundays big match with Ric Flair after Pillman missed Air Pillman which allowed Sullivan to touch the last remaining corner.

Post match The Four Horseman attacked Sullivan in the ring and then Arn, Brian and Chris guarded ringside to stop any threat from the Dungeon of Doom. Flair then had the time to use the strap to physical destroy the back and torso off Kevin Sullivan who was helpless.

Konnan got his big chance to wrestle in the main even of Nitro against quite possibly the hottest wrestler on the roster at the moment in Randy Savage. The recently turned heel version of Konnan used cheap antics and tactics to get heat from the crowd and to keep him on the level of the Macho Man. Randy had the burning desire and the love from the fans which got him through the match and allowed him to beat the United States Champion with a Flying Elbow Drop.

The Giant who has been stalking and attacking Savage after his matches for the past several weeks came out and did the same this week, giving Savage a huge Chokeslam and holding up his World Heavyweight Championship. Hulk Hogan interrupted The Giant's celebration and came to fight on behalf of the already taken out Savage, despite Hogan bringing everything he had he too received the same fate of a Chokeslam in the middle of the ring as The Giant stood over two icons looking dominant as ever.

After a tournament which showcased some great action and exciting wrestling from all over the world it came down to the final to decide on the first WCW Cruiserweight Champion. The styles of Malenko and Guerrero meshed well with Guerrero focusing mainly on aerial moves while Malenko kept it mat base although both could do vise versa. The moment of truth came when Malenko moved out of an oncoming Frog Splash and then landed a Gutbuster on Guerrero, this wasn't enough to keep the Mexican star down and it took a Super Gutbuster from the top rope to finally put him away.

Match Type:
Standard Tag Match

Time Limit:

Referee:

The Steiner Brothers have tormented Harlem Heat since coming back to WCW and have got two single victories over the team on Nitro. Following Rick and Stevie Ray's match on Nitro last week The Public Enemy debuted and it was they who decided the outcome of the match when after 7 minutes of solid in ring action they came down and at first hit Booker T once causing a disqualification and Harlem Heat to be awarded the victory and then began to attack The Steiner Brothers.

Post match Harlem Heat realised they had been made the victors and celebrated before joining Public Enemy in attacking The Steiner Brothers who couldn't fight off the four on two attack.

Konnan vs Jushin Liger

Match Type:
Standard Singles Match

Time Limit:

Referee:
Nick Patrick

A big time match where one of the biggest stars in Japan faced one of the biggest stars in Mexico for an American promotion and for the US title. The styles excited the fans, especially the offence of Liger which was very much exciting daredevil moves. Konnan worked to a good game plan constantly working on Liger's lower body to remove the aerial threat and soon Liger was damaged enough to where he could make him submit to the Tequila Sunrise.

Kevin Sullivan w/Jimmy Hart vs Ric Flair

Match Type:
Standard Singles Match

Time Limit:
N/A

Referee:
Nick Patrick

The first of three main events an the best match of the night took place and Sullivan's and Flair's bad blood turned this more into a street fight than a regular wrestling match to which referee Nick Patrick went easy on the rules due to the pressure of this match. Despite Flair throwing everything he had at Sullivan during the match he would not stay down, this included multiple variations and times applied of the Figure Four Leg-Lock and also the using of the timekeepers bell as a weapon. In the end it took a Double A Spine Buster from and interfering Arn Anderson and then Flair using a Small Package to get the win.

</div>

After the match the celebration by the Four Horseman was cut short by Eric Bischoff who decided since Arn wanted to get involved in the match he too can face Kevin Sullivan, tomorrow on Nitro in a steel cage!

Sting & Lex Luger vs The Blue Bloods

Match Type:
Standard Tag Match

Time Limit:

Referee:

The rivalry between The Blue Bloods and the tag champions has taken The Blue Bloods up a level in WCW due to them getting strong heat working with two of the top babyfaces in the company. Regal was able to work the bulk of the match in there with both Sting and Luger and once being heavily attacked by Luger who had momentum, he tagged out to Taylor who took the Torture Rack and quickly submitted, the titles stay with Luger & Sting.

</div>

Backstage before the main event Randy Savage was being interview by Gene Okerlund where he promised tonight will be a night to remember for the fans as at the end of the night the macho man would of slayed The Giant and will be standing tall the WCW World Champion. Hulk Hogan than was shown wishing Savage luck before his entrance.

WCW World Heavyweight Championship

The Giant vs Randy Savage

Match Type:
Standard Singles Match

Time Limit:
N/A

Referee:
Nick Patrick

The big main event saw Randy Savage get his rematch for the Heavyweight title that he was owed by Ric Flair but never got due to The Giant claiming the belt from Flair. The match had a slow build up throughout with The Giant dominating with big powerful moves and the announcers hyping him as the most dangerous athlete in professional sport ever. The domination then led to a comeback from Savage where he finally, after many attempts managed to get the big man of his feet and then he landed a Flying Elbow Drop of the top rope only to rebound of The Giant's body and go flying back outside the ring. Savage was clearly in a bad way following the collision of bodies to which he was much worse off, The Giant then got Savage in the ring and delivered a Chokeslam to seal the victory.

</div>

After the match The Giant had a brief celebration before leaving to go to the back, Savage slowly started to recover and get back to his feet while the crowd applauded his effort.

Tony Schiavone: "Oh my god, is that?.... What in the hell is he doing here?"

Razor Ramon a member of the WWF roster, walked into the ring from the crowd. He was not mentioned by name by the announcers instead just questioned on what he was doing but the live crowd certainly knew who he was. He ran against the ropes and clothes lined Savage out the ring to the floor before briefly staring around the crowd and then leaving through the crowd exit.

Rey Mysterio Jr vs The Zodiac

Referee:

Rey Mysterio Jr was getting his first chance on WCW's top show since impressing on WCW Saturday Night, he faced The Zodiac who is mid way through a bad gimmick change and is struggling for momentum. The match was looking solid until a man walked from the crowd into the ring and abruptly stopped the match, the referee throughout the match and escorted the wrestlers out the ring.

</div>

Again it was Razor Ramon, but once again no announcer called him by his real name or by his WWF gimmick they just couldn't believe he had shown up on WCW television two nights in a row. Hall grabbed a microphone and told the fans 'you know who i am, but you don't know why i am here' he then mocked 'billionaire' Ted and Macho Man Randy Savage who was at home resting following the match with The Giant at Slamboree. He left after announcing that he has a challenge for Ted, Bischoff, Savage, Hogan and the whole of WCW and declared 'you wanna go to war? You want a war? You gonna get one'.

Arn Anderson vs Kevin Sullivan

Match Type:
Cage Match

Time Limit:

Referee:

The announcers spent a while questioning what just happened with the appearance of Scott Hall/Razor Ramon in WCW. By the time everything had settled the steel cage match was well under way with Sullivan wanting revenge on Anderson for the match he cost him at Slamboree with Flair. Sullivan was struggling nearing the end of the match but this time he got the win with the help of the returning Dungeon of Doom member Hugh Morrus who Power Bombed Anderson which allowed Sullivan to escaped through the cage door.

</div>

After the match a four on four brawl took place between The Dungeon of Doom (Morrus, Sullivan, Barbarian & Meng) and The Four Horseman (Flair, Anderson, Pillman & Benoit) the brawl continued until they went into the backstage area and the show went to break.

Sting & Lex Luger vs Harlem Heat

Match Type:
Standard Tag Match

Time Limit:

Referee:
Charles Robinson

Following the controversial ending to the number one contenders tag team bout at Slamboree, Harlem Heat got their guaranteed tag team title shot on Nitro. Several times throughout the match Harlem Heat looked like capturing the belts, particularly after they landed the Harlem Hangover on Sting, however the dream team of Luger and Sting fought through the competition and following a hot tag to Luger he was able to make Stevie Ray tap to the Torture Rack.

</div>

After the match Luger let Sting leave and grabbed a microphone and applauded the effort shown by Savage last night at Slamboree, he then says since The Giant needs a new challenger who better than the total package to be next in line for a title shot. Luger than tried to call out Bischoff to see if the match would be made but instead he was attacked by The Giant who ended Nitro standing over Luger after delivering a Chokeslam to the Television ad Tag Team Champion.

You sure do like ending shows with chokeslams haha. I just caught up on this, it's pretty interesting. I like this mid-90s, "in-between" time period in wrestling.

Just one thing, you kept the steel cage announcement from Slamboree in your writeup for Nitro right after the Arn/Sullivan match. :p
