WCW WEEKLY RUMBLINGS

Extended Deals And Signings

-With Eric Bischoff now at the helm of World Championship Wrestling, everyone can expect some changes. Some of them are positive and some of them are negative. Here we can report that Terry Taylor extended his deal and that former WCW/NWA wrestler 'White Lightning' Tim Horner has signed with the company. Rumors are that he will be re-forming the team known as The Lightning Express with Brad Armstrong. Other signings have been made but have not been announced by WCW as of press time.

Tag Team Wrestling On The Rise?

-A recent interview with Eric Bischoff has him announcing that he is going to put an increased focus on tag team wrestling as part of the future of WCW. Right now WCW has several tag teams looking to work their way up the rankings, including the team of Booker T and Stevie Ray who are known as Harlem Heat. Other teams include the Bad Attitude pairing of Bobby Eaton and Steve Keirn, the Pretty Wonderful duo of Paul Orndorff and Paul Roma, the Stars 'N' Stripes team which includes The Patriot and Marcus Bagwell and, of course, the WCW World Tag Team champions Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan. Rumor has it that more teams will be coming to WCW as the weeks and months push forward.

WWF Monday Night Raw Taping

-In the main event for this company, Razor Ramon defeated Diesel in a 'B' rated match. The only other match on the card was The New Foundation defeating Men On A Mission. They also had a skit involving The Undertaker and Randy Savage. Overall, Monday Night Raw scores a 'B+' on the Ryland scale.

ECW Hardcore TV Taping

-In the main event for ECW Hardcore TV, The Sandman teams with 2 Cold Scorpio to defeat Sabu and Ron Harris in a 'B-' rated match. Other matches on the card included Dory Funk Jr. defeating WCW wrestler Cactus Jack and Mikey Whipwreck defeating Big Tilly. Other moments on the card included a brawl between Cactus Jack, Shane Douglas and Terry Funk and a confrontation between Jimmy Snuka and Johnny Grunge. The show scores a 'C+' on the Ryland scale.

WCW Saturday Night TV Taping

-Make sure you come tonight for the taping of WCW Saturday Night! Announced matches so far include Terry Funk taking on 'Das Wunderkind' Alex Wright, Lord Steven Regal defending the WCW World Television title against Scott Stud, Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan defending the WCW World Tag Team titles against the long-time pairing of The State Patrol, Jean-Paul Levesque in action and a non title match between WCW United States Heavyweight champion 'Stunning' Steve Austin and the WCW Franchise Sting! Plus more, including an appearance by the WCW World Champion Ric Flair and one of the newest signings to WCW, 'The Immortal' Hulk Hogan!

I look forward to seeing you break out a 1994 WCW diary. We can exchange notes and such. ;) As far as mine being better? That remains to be seen. Though I do have some plans for this one up to 1995.

WCW SATURDAY NIGHT!

Saturday Week 1 July 1994 (Taped Thursday)

Location: The Pyramid Arena (South East)

Attendance: 15,000

Overall Rating: B

TV Rating: 6.48

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/HulkHogan.jpg

[WCW Saturday Night does not begin inside the arena. The show does NOT begin with the announcers welcoming everyone to WCW Saturday Night. The show does not begin with a wrestling match. The show begins with a video-taped interview segment with one of the newest signings of WCW and a professional wrestling living legend and icon: Hulk Hogan!]

Hulk Hogan

"Well, let me tell you something, brothers. Very soon, every single one of you Hulkamaniacs will be welcoming the Immortal one to WCW. At Bash At The Beach, brothers, I will be stepping in the ring against an icon. This is an icon almost on par with Hulkamania. There is a difference between the two of us, though, Ric Flair. The difference is that you do not have the power of all these Hulkamaniacs behind you. The difference is that you don't do the training. You don't say your prayers. You don't take your vitamins. You don't live and breathe the power of Hulkamania, brother. In a little less than a month, Ric, when you step inside the ring with me, you have to ask yourself something, dude. Whatcha gonna do? Whatcha gonna do when the power of Hulk Hogan and all these Hulkamaniacs runs wild over you?!?!?!"

[Hulk goes into several poses as the video comes to a close and we head to the ringside area.]

Match #1

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/TerryFunk.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/RobertFuller.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/AlexWright2.jpg

Terry Funk vs. Alex Wright

[The opening match features a professional wrestling legend against a WCW newcomer in 'Das Wunderkind' Alex Wright. Alex shows some spunk in the early-going, attacking Terry and bringing him down with a snap suplex and a spinning heel kick. The crowd gets behind Alex but there is some interference by Col. Robert Parker from the ringside area. The interference turns the tide in the direction of Terry Funk and the legend takes advantage. Terry catches Alex with a brainbuster and then turns his attention to the leg. It is the work of a few moments for Terry to catch Alex in the Funk Spinning Toe Hold. Alex struggles for a moment but then he has to submit.]

Winner: Terry Funk (Via Submission @ 5:48)

Match Rating: C-

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/RicFlair.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/SherriMartel2.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/GeneOkerlund.jpg

[We move from the ring down to the WCW Saturday Night interview area where Mean Gene Okerlund is standing by with Sensuous Sherri and the WCW World Heavyweight champion Ric Flair! Ric is dressed in casual attire as he doesn't seem to have a match tonight. Take it away, Mean Gene!]

Gene Okerlund

"Alright, fans, joining us are Sensuous Sherri and the WCW World Heavyweight champion Ric Flair. 'Nature Boy' right around the corner is the Bash At The Beach and your title defense against Hulk Hogan."

Ric Flair

"Mean Gene, did you read the USA Today paper? Was it the biggest ad you've ever seen? For the biggest match in the history of professional wrestling? Do you know why? Because on one half of the page 'The Nature Boy' Ric Flair stood proud and underneath his name was the word 'Champion.' On the other side of the page stood Hulk Hogan. And under his name read the word 'Challenger.' That's the difference, Hogan. You can pull any political string you want but at the Bash At The Beach, it's you, me and the Sensuous one. No matter how you look at it, bring your whole entourage. The bottom line is, pal, it's Ric Flair, the champion against Hulk Hogan, the challenger. Whoooooo."

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/NickBockwinkel.jpg

[The attention turns toward Ric's right where the WCW Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel walks up.]

Nick Bockwinkel

"Ric, the WCW Championship Committee and I have been doing some talking about the future of this company and this belt and your match with Hulk Hogan at Bash At The Beach. First of all, Sensuous Sherri is banned from ringside during that match due to her constant interference. But that's not all. You might not even be at that match! Tonight you will defend your WCW Heavyweight title against another legend in this sport. That legend is someone you are very familiar with: Ricky 'The Dragon' Steamboat! The winner of that match will move on to next week to face the winner of another match this evening as the WCW United States Heavyweight champion Steve Austin takes on Sting in non title action! Whoever wins THAT match will go on to Bash At The Beach to face off with Hulk Hogan. Good luck."

[Nick turns and walks off as Ric yells at him off-microphone. He is incensed! Bobby Heenan yells about this not being fair to Flair! But Nick Bockwinkel's word is law here!]

Match #2

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/StevenRegal.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/SirWilliam.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/ScottyRiggs2.jpg

WCW World Television Title Match

Lord Steven Regal defends vs. Scott Stud

[The second match of the evening is not as competitive as the first match as the WCW World Television champion is dominant in this battle against Scott Stud. Lord Steven shows off his technical abilities with several submissions that Scott is able to find a way out of. Steven catches Scott with a double underhook suplex and then turns around, wrapping Scott in a Regal Stretch. Within moments, Scott is submitting.]

Winner: Lord Steven Regal (Via Submission @ 7:18; Lord Steven Regal retains the WCW World Television title)

Match Rating: C-

[The bell sounds but Lord Steven Regal does NOT release the hold. The crowd boos as Regal continues to stretch Scott Stud. Scott cries out in agony, trying to break the hold himself but Regal is a technical master. THe crowd looks surprised when music begins to play.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/JimDuggan.jpg

[it's 'Hacksaw' Jim Duggan! The last time he was seen was in WWF! The American Patriot rushes down to the ring and slides inside swinging his 2X4! Lord Steven releases Scott Stud and quickly escapes the ring, grabbing his WCW World Television title belt. Hacksaw gets a 'USA' chant going through the crowd, giving a thumbs up and then a look toward Lord Steven, who looks disgusted with the appearance of Jim Duggan. Welcome to WCW, Hacksaw!]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/ArnAnderson.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/DustinRhodes.jpg

[We move to a video insert of Arn Anderson and Dustin Rhodes standing before a blue background.]

Arn Anderson

"We are less than a month away now from Dustin here and myself getting revenge on the Stud Stable. I can tell you right now that any intelligent human being knows that you don't mess with an Anderson. But I can tell you from personal experience that it can be very difficult to mess with someone of the Rhodes family as well."

Dustin Rhodes

"They say that I am a Natural in this business. I have the bloodline of the American Dream. My dad would say that at Bash At The Beach we're gonna get funky like a monkey. We're gonna prove to the whole world that the Rhodes family and the Anderson family can work together. We're gonna get the old Arn Anderson from off the shelf and we're gonna step into that ring with Terry Funk and Bunkhouse Buck. We're gonna tear the roof off the joint."

[Dustin and Arn shake hands and we move back to the ring for our next encounter.]

Match #3

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/MickFoley.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/KevinSullivan.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/DaveSullivan.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/BuddyLeeParker.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/DaleVeasey.jpg

WCW World Tag Team Titles Match

Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan defend vs. The State Patrol

[Our third match of the evening is for the WCW World Tag Team titles. The State Patrol team are veterans of tag team wrestling and they show it early on during this match. The team of Sgt. Buddy Lee Parker and Lt. James Earl Wright more than hold their own, showing that they want to win the WCW World Tag Team titles. But the brawling and crazy antics of Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan prove to be too much even for the experience of The State Patrol. In the end, Cactus catches Lt. James Earl Wright with a piledriver and makes the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan (Via Pinfall @ 6:20; Cactus Jack and Kevin Sullivan make defence number 1 of their WCW World Tag Team Championship titles.

Match Rating: C-

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/BrianKnobbs.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/JerrySags.jpg

[Dave Sullivan enters the ring to celebrate with his 'brother' and Cactus Jack but the three men are immediately attacked by The Nasty Boys! The crowd boos as the beatdown ensues, including Brian Knobbs and Jerry Saggs using Dave Sullivan's crutches on all three men! Knobbs comes flying off the top turnbuckle with a flying elbow right onto the heart of Cactus Jack! The Nasty Boys grab the WCW World Tag Team title belts and raise them up to boos from the crowd. The Nastys drop the belts on top of Cactus and Kevin before they walk out.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/Sting.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/GeneOkerlund.jpg

[We move from the ring to the interview area to reveal "Mean" Gene Okerlund and the man called Sting. Sting smiles as he stands there, bouncing on his feet.]

Gene Okerlund

"Good evening ladies and gentlemen. Before I speak with this man beside me I'd like to remind you all that all of your inside information is on the WCW hotline. Kids, get your parent's permission before calling. Now, Sting, tonight you take on the United States champion Steve Austin in a non title #1 contenders match. Your thoughts?"

Sting

"In just a short amount of time, Gene-o, it's Sting on one side of the ring and Steve Austin on the other side of the ring. I am not taking Austin lightly. We all know that he deserves the United States title that he has around his waist but my focus is on the World champion. My focus is on Ric Flair and the opportunity to win the WCW World title again. Tonight, it's Austin, next week, it's Ric Flair or Ricky Steamboat. Either way, the WCW belt is coming back around my waist. OWWWWW!"

[sting turns and walks off and it's time to head back to the ring for another match.]

Match #4

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/Jean-PaulLvesque.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/TerryTaylor.jpg

Jean-Paul Lévesque vs. Terry Taylor

[Our next match features the arrogant newcomer Jean-Paul Levesque and the veteran Terry Taylor. This match isn't much more than a squash match as Levesque is in control from the sound of the opening bell. He plays to the crowd during this time, drawing boos as he bows. Jean-Paul catches Terry with the move that he calls the 'Pedigree' and makes the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winner: Jean-Paul Lévesque (Via Pinfall @ 6:12)

Match Rating: D+

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/RicFlair.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/RickySteamboat.jpg

[A video begins to play showing the history between Ric Flair and Ricky Steamboat. Both of these men have scored victories against one another over the years. They have had matches that were considered match of the year winners. Tonight, these two men continue their feud, putting another chapter in their legacy. Who will walk away as the champion?]

Match #5

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/BookerT.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/StevieRay.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/ArnAnderson.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/DustinRhodes.jpg

Harlem Heat vs. Arn Anderson and Dustin Rhodes

[A solid tag team encounter that had some good action but not so much in the way of heat. During the match, the announcers remind everyone that Arn Anderson and Dustin Rhodes will team up to face the Stud Stable at Bash At The Beach. Dustin plays a face-in-peril during this match, showing that this is not going to be some squash match this evening. But the hot tag was made to Arn Anderson and the man known as Double A takes down both members of Harlem Heat with punches. The match breaks down, leaving Arn Anderson and Booker T in the ring. The Enforcer strikes Booker with a Spinebuster and then runs his thumb across his throat. He grabs Booker -- DDT! Arn makes the cover: 1 -- 2 -- 3!]

Winners: Arn Anderson and Dustin Rhodes (Via Pinfall @ 7:25)

Match Rating: C

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/Meng.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/JimmyGolden.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/TerryFunk.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/RobertFuller.jpg

[stevie Ray pulls Booker T out of the ring as The Stud Stable hit the ring. Arn Anderson is assaulted from behind for about thirty seconds before Dustin Rhodes slides inside the ring and begins throwing punches to the Stud Stable. The numbers game, though, plays to the favor of The Stud Stable. Arn Anderson is tossed over the top rope to the floor and the attention is turned to Dustin Rhodes. Terry Funk sets up Dustin -- Piledriver! The crowd boos as Dustin is laid out in the center of the ring. The Stud Stable stand together with Col. Robert Parker as we move from there to the interview set.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/SteveAustin.jpghttp://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/GeneOkerlund.jpg

[We move to that interview area where Gene Okerlund is standing once again. This time, Gene has the WCW United States champion 'Stunning' Steve Austin. Steve is mimmicking the movie reel.]

Gene Okerlund

"Well, ladies and gentlemen, I am standing here at this moment with the United States champion Steve Austin. Steve, tonight, you take on the man called Sting in a number one contenders match."

Steve Austin

"Gene-o, smile for the camera. We are just a few minutes away from seeing this Hollywood Blonde take his rightful place as the top contender to the world title. I am better than Sting. I am more intelligent than Sting. And I deserve this more than the so-called franchise of WCW. I am the United States champion for a reason and you're gonna find out that reason tonight. And that's the bottom line."

[steve walks off toward the ring as Gene explains that the match is next right here on WCW Saturday Night!]

Match #6

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/SteveAustin.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/Sting.jpg

Non Title

Steve Austin vs. Sting

[This match, our semi-main event, is as good as everyone could expect. Great action and a good crowd are showcased in this contest. Steve goes for the 'That's A Wrap' early on but Sting reverses it into a small package for a two count. The match continues on, showing a showcase of top wrestling action that one can only find here in WCW. Neither man seemed to hold back and there were several instances where it seemed the match might end but the other wrestler kicked out. Austin locks in Hollywood And Vine for about a minute before Sting reaches the ropes. The crowd gets behind Sting, clapping and stomping their feet. Sting begins the comeback, striking Steve with punches and then a kick and a one handed bulldog. Sting heads to the top turnbuckle -- Diving Cross Body! Steve reverses the momentum -- reversed again by Sting: 1 -- 2 -- 3! Sting is going on to face the winner of Ric Flair/Ricky Steamboat next week!]

Winner: Sting (Via Pinfall @ 8:41)

Match Rating: B

[The crowd is happy about the win by Sting just moments ago as the replays are shown. Then we head down to the interview area where Gene Okerlund is standing with Vader and his manager Harley Race.]

Gene Okerlund

"Joining me at this moment is 450 pounds of monster. He is awesome. He is Vader. Harley, did you hear the challenge last week from the man -- the Guardian Angel?"

Harley Race

"Yes, Gene, the world and I heard the idiot talking out here, saying that Vader has been running from him. This man runs from no human being. He's never taken a backward step from anyone in his lifetime. Now, Guardian Angel, or whatever you want to call yourself, we know that you're the scum underneath and have to use a cane to protect yourself."

Vader

"Let me tell you what time it is! It's Vader time! Guardian Angel, you want a match at Bash At The Beach? You've got it. But you're gonna find out who the man is!"

[Vader barks at the camera and poses as we move back to the ring for our main event contest this evening.]

Match #7

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/RicFlair.jpg w/ http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/SherriMartel2.jpg vs. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/RickySteamboat.jpg

WCW World Heavyweight Title Match

Ric Flair defends vs. Ricky Steamboat

[What a main event contest we have right here on WCW Saturday Night! The match has excellent in-ring action and great heat from the crowd as these two men put on a clinic in the early going. The action is definitely back and forth with some famous Ric Flair spots, including the flip over the turnbuckle and body slam off the top turnbuckle. This continues until some distraction by Sensuous Sherri gives Ric the advantage. He begins focusing on the leg of 'The Dragon,' using a shinbreaker and ramming the knee against the ring post. Ric does a strut and then goes to pick up Ricky but Ricky rolls him into a small package: 1 -- 2 -- Kickout! Ric kicked out at the last second. We very nearly had a new World champion! Hulk Hogan versus Ricky Steamboat, anyone? Ricky seems to be making a comeback when someone comes down to the ringside area.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/SteveAustin.jpg

[That someone is the United States champion 'Stunning' Steve Austin. Steve mimmicks the camera as he stands at ringside, giving a definite distraction to Ricky Steamboat. Sensuous Sherri gets the referee's attention, allowing Steve Austin to slide in the ring and smash Ricky Steamboat on the back of the knee with the United States title belt! The crowd boos as Steve exits the ring, raising the belt up high. Ric makes his way up to his feet and sees the downed Ricky Steamboat. 'The Nature Boy' bounces off the ropes -- kneedrop! The WCW World champion grabs the legs -- Figure 4 Leglock! 'The Dragon' fights the hold, struggling and trying to block out the pain but eventually he is forced to submit so he can live to fight another day.]

Winner: Ric Flair (Via Submission @ 17:18; Ric Flair makes defence number 1 of his WCW World Heavyweight Championship title.)

Match Rating: B+

[The bell sounds but Ric Flair is unwilling to release the Figure 4 Leglock he has on Ricky Steamboat! The crowd boos as referee Nick Patrick tries to force the break. Steve Austin and Sensuous Sherri enter the ring. Sherri grabs the official and throws him down. Steve drops down and begins throwing punches to the skull of Ricky Steamboat as the bell sounds over and over again. Ricky's forehead is busted open from one of the shots! The crowd rumbles suddenly and the reason why is obvious.]

http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a226/shawkes/WCW%201994/Sting.jpg

[it's Sting! Sting comes sprinting down the aisle, entering the ring. He takes down Steve Austin with a clothesline before physically breaking the Figure 4. Steve grabs Sting from behind but a couple of elbow shots send the Stunning one backward. Sting throws Steve Austin out of the ring! As he's doing that, Ric Flair quickly slides out of the ring and grabs the WCW World title belt! Ric and Sting share a staredown at one another. This is our main event next week in the Omaha Civic Auditorium! We'll see you there!]

Bad Attitude vs. Arn Anderson and Dustin Rhodes

Comment: I really feel as though I should look up some stuff from Bad Attitude, just to see how the two gelled as a team. I really don't know much with Eaton from between his Dangerous Alliance days until the Blue Bloods.

Vader vs. Bobby Walker

Comment: The positive for "Hardwork" - Vader will make it quick.

Tex Slazenger vs. Ricky Steamboat

Comment: Ah, PIG. Jobbing to the stars is kind of his best role.

Pretty Wonderful vs. Stars 'n' Stripes

Comment: Keep a heel team strong to go after Cactus/Kevin following Bash.

Open Challenge

Diamond Dallas Page vs. ???

Comment: I'm guessing that it will indeed be a new signing.

Terry Funk vs. The Guardian Angel

Comment: Angel's match with Vader takes precedence.

WCW World Heavyweight Title Match

Ric Flair defends vs. Sting

Comment: Yeah I don't really see things changing as far as Hogan vs Flair goes, that's kinda the big marquee match going on.
