D.O.T.T. - GLOW, as requested by D Boon's Ghost!

Recommended Posts

CWA and the UK's All-Star Wrestling decided to help me make these recaps shorter by going out of business. Not too surprising for ASW, but the loss of Memphis is big news, with guys like Lawler, Idol, Savage and Mantell now having to look to work a lot more elsewhere. When the business finally recovers (if it does!) then it will be very interesting to see who ends up where... AJPW - After Jumbo's title triumph over Terry Funk last month, the Japanese wrestlers finally recovered the tag belts as well. Jumbo and Baba defeated Funk and Stan Hansen in an excellent bout. (A) The other two big matches of the month were both Hansen/Tsurata singles bouts, with Stan winning one by countout after his lariat nearly decapitated Jumbo, knocking him to the outside, but he was too drained to capitalise. AWA - The big Battle of the Bay show was a real disappointment, with the only match standing out being Big Scott Hall vs Leon White - and that for all the wrong reasons, with too many blown slots and a lot of sloppy moves. The losses of the big names are really starting to hurt now. AGPW - Big story has been Cuban Assassin unseating Leo Burke for the Maritimes title, then defending against him 3 times in a row. The pair definitely have good chemistry, with all the matches being worth seeing. Stampede - Without a TV show, just one event this month, headlined by Leo Burke defeating Loch Ness Monster for the North American title in a good bout. (B-) Hot newcomer Brian Pillman hurt the promotion by refusing to sign a new contract, though. CSTATE - Harley Race is possibly the best wrestler around, and was on fire at the start of the month, defeating Piper, Funk, and Steamboat in 3 incredible matches before full houses. (All A's.) In the second of those, he won the Heavyweight title. Further down the card, the Moondogs continue to expand, bringing in Killer Karl Kox as Moondog Kox. However, Spot seems unhappy with the addition, and actually teamed with Dick Slater to beat Kox and Rex a few weeks ago. Since then, a truce seems to have been declared, but who knows how long that will last? CWF - Big signing sees Tully Blanchard come to Florida. The entertaining brawler is expected to be a major heel here, having been looking for a fed since SWCW closed down. He's formed a loose alliance with Pak Song, the giant foreigner. Most of the month's show have been headlined by Heavy Duty (Lewin and Mulligan) taking on Dusty Rhodes and either Mike Graham or Bob Backlund, with rumors continuing that Rhodes and Backlund becoming a full-time team after the backstage falling out between Dusty and Mike. EMLL - Mascaras going over Mondo Guerrero was the best match of the month, but everything else solid. We Steal Wrestlers - Strongbow remembers to turn up, taking down Don Kernodle in the best match of the fed's short (but not short enough) history. Gorgeous Gino and the Spoiler become the third tag champs in four shows, unseating the Wild Riders. Record crowd of 123. GCW - Road Warrior push continues, as Hawk took the TV title from Ronnie Garvin. Team Terror go over Team Smash Mouth in a battle of the stupidest names in the business, Bruno Sammartino Jr. goes over Scott Armstrong in a battle of the worst wrestlers in their families, and Tommy Rich beats Jake Roberts at the End of the Month Spectacular in an excellent bout. IWA - The new Passion show has been a huge success, selling out 3 times in Quebec. The last one was particular solid, featuring 3 great matches, with Roddy Piper beating Le Bourreau, Gilles Poisson downing Tony Parisi, and Dick Murdoch finally unseating World champion Rick Martel. Joint - Huge month for the only remaining British promotion, who drew 10,000 fans to each of their 3 biggest shows. Nagasaki continues to get the better of Jackie Pallo, King Kong Kirk and Kung Fu are feuding with the McCoys, and the fans have been delighted to see Big Daddy and Pat Roach teaming up occassionally. MLW - Really quiet month for Maple Leaf. MACW - Still dominating the industry, and with Ric Flair embroiled in a feud with Nick Bockwinkel which hits A grade every time they lock up, don't bet on any other fed catching them soon. The Trojan Arena show on 19th June is show of the year so far for any company, with a massive top 2 matches as Flair beat Bockwinkel, and Race downed Piper, in 2 classics going over 30 minutes each. MSW - Shockwave has debuted on TV, but hasn't really lit the world up yet, despite a bunch of reasonable JYD title defenses in the main events. NJPW - The debut of new show Riptide has shown no sign of extending New Japan too far, and they've carried on putting on really good matches. Highlight of the month definitely Summer Struggle, Tiger Mask beating Hulk, Choshu and Dynamite to retain his belt. PNW - Definitely taken a hit with the loss of their TV show, but still carrying on doing reasonably well for such a small fed. UWA - Pulling in 4000 plus for 11 of their 12 shows, and we saw lots of title changes. Canek jobbed the Middleweight title to Villano III, who lost it to Dos Caras just a week or so later, Gran Markus lost the Junior Lightweight belt to Lobo Rubio, Hit and Run were pinned by Team Crime for the tag belts, and finally Rubio was beaten by Villano IV. WCCW - David Von Erich's long Texas title reign was finally ended, as Buddy Roberts beat him at Star Wars. WWC - Bob Sweetan lost the Puerto Rican title without being pinned, as Sweet Daddy Siki pinned Black Gordman in a triple threat match. Sweetan brushed the loss off though, teaming with Hercules Ayala to win the tag belts from Morales and Colon! WWF - Jimmy Snuka defends his title at all nine shows, winning 8 matches and going to a 45 minute time limit draw with Pedro Morales. Even though their in-ring action can't match up to MACW, the Federation is almost certainly their closest real contender at the moment.

Here we go, with our first show at D popularity! Fingers crossed that it's the beginning of a new era for the Gorgeous Ladies... and their talented booker! Pre-show, Rosa Winner gets her first try on the mic. She kinda sucks. Winner also gets a tryout in the ring, jobbing to Wendi Richter. (E) To start off the show proper, we see Olympia and Debbie Debutante - now using a Wonder Woman gimmick and calling herself Debbie Delicious - beat Spike and Vine. (D) Beastie beats Americana. (C-) Bikini contest, California Doll beats Sally and Olympia. (B-) As the divas leave, Penny Banner fires T-shirts into the crowd. Who said wrestling was all about in ring action?! (B-) Next up, Palestina vs Bambi. Pal comes out... and kisses Bambi!! (C+) Palestina quickly dispatches a shocked Bambi. (C-) Post-match, we see California Doll and Sally arguing, Sally saying she deserved to win the bikini contest. Doll shrugs and turns away... and Sally nails her from behind, as the crowd boo! (D) Sally cheats her way to a win over Doll. (D) An annoyed Doll is greeted by Vine, who's come out for her talk show. Doll asks Vine whether she's finished making fun of her, and the two fight. (C-) Vine wins, but Doll crawls after her, destroying the set that Vine had brought out with her ready to put up in her hurry to get hold of the other girl. (C-) Backstage, Wendi Richter and Debbie congratulate Tammy Jones on her recent title win. (C) In a special bout between two competitors who respect each other very much, Jones downs Richter in a submissions match. Hey, notice how that almost sounds like a great match between two excellent technicians? Well, at least until you see the grade... (C-) Post-match, Jones asks Jackie Stallone to book her vs Beastie one more time. (C) Beastie comes out and also asks for the match. (C-) Jackie announces the match - at GLOW on Tour in August! (C) C-, no comments to be made... hmmm, not too bad.

Unfortunately, two more casualties this month. (Unfortunately? Who am I kidding, these things get easier to type up every second!) AGPW decided that with their touring run at an end, the time had come to call it a day permanently, and in bigger news, IWA closed their doors. There was also a loss for WWF, as Vincent J McMahon quit the business. AJPW - AJPW have risen to Cult size, and celebrated by bringing in a few new guys. NJPW top star Osamu Kido will now work for both feds, former ref Mister Takahashi will be helping control things backstage, and entertaining manager Paul Ellering has hooked up with the Gaijin Invasion stable of Funk, Brody and Hansen. Except... it looks like Terry Funk may have left that stable! After regaining the title from Jumbo Tsurata a few weeks ago, he shook hands with Jumbo, and since then has not been seen with Bruiser or Stan. Plus, he saved brother Dory, formerly an enemy, from a beatdown at the hands of Yatsu and the Great Kojika. AWA - End of the Month show saw Rick Martel beat King Kong Brody for the AWA Tv title, little else of interest. Stampede - Can you say 'blah'? CState - Race still rocks! 5 great matches, 2 with Funk and 3 with Steamboat (all A's), and he's still the champion. Spot and Rex seem to have made up, teaming to beat Bobby Brown and Jerry Oates. CWF - Bob Roop is the new TV champion, defeating Jake Roberts in a good match. (B.) Jos Leduc has been pushed back to the top of the card, defeating Ron Bass for the Heavyweight title, and his feud with Backlund is now heating up even more - arguably the top feud in the US atm. EMLL - Usual solid month, Ultraman beats Fantasma for the Lightweight belt. We Suck Wrestling - Gino Hernandez and the Spoiler are now teaming up full-time as the Brain Damagers. Or maybe the Brain Damaged, given who they're stupid enough to be wrestling for. New attendance record of 141. Dee Booher strips the Spoiler of the IC title for failing to defend it for 3 months, and books herself in a match for the vacated belt - although she at least has the decency to job to Len Denton, thus not ruining its credibility even more. GCW - Buzz Sawyer took the Heavyweight title away from Tommy Rich, but in the big news, the Road Warriors are starting to struggle. Hawk jobbed the TV belt to Bullet Bob, and the team then lost to Mr Wrestling II and Bruno Sammartino Jr. Joint - Nagasaki vs Pallo is still being milked, Jackie being Kendo's job boy these days. Fans are incredibly still digging it, with PPV buys at an all-time high. MLW - Jack Brisco won the Wrestling Spirit belt from the Sheik in the match of the month. (B.) Apart from that, quiet again. MACW - Massive edition of In Your Town! to kick the month off, with Piper beating Flair for the big gold in the main (B+), after Larry Zbysko had taken the US title from Jimmy Valiant. Also featured Race beating Koloff, and Dick Murdoch going over the Assassin, in two good matches. (Both B's.) Followed that up the next week with Piper defeating Flair in a rematch, and Race going over Bockwinkel, in another classic bout. (Both A's.) 3rd In Your Town! of the month was headlined by Brisco and Flair beating Bockwinkel and Piper to keep the tag belts, in another great match. (A again.) 4th saw Race over Murdoch (A), and it's starting to look like it'll be a long, long time before anyone overtakes them. MSW - Sorry, fell asleep watching Lord Humongous vs Big Bubba Rogers and haven't managed to see their programming since - keep getting bad memories. Doesn't help that the match before that was a clash between the Blade Runners, who may go on to be stars, but are REALLY green at the moment. (Both E's!) NJPW - New Japan have gone national, but shockingly, they've lost top US star Hulk Hogan! Hogan put Tiger Mask over one last time before losing, then TM dropped his WWF International title to Riki Choshu. Choshu/Tiger Mask is the top story now, with Riki twice defending the belt successfully in rematches against the former champ. PNW - Smallest fed going isn't setting the world alight. UWA - Incredibly continue to pull in more than 4000 for almost every show they run. Villanos dominate, I beating IV for the Lightweight belt and III taking down Caras for the Middleweight title. WCCW - All about Jose Lothario. He teamed with Kevin Von Erich to beat the Freebirds for the tag belts at Independence Day Star Wars, then beat Buddy Roberts for the Texas title the following show. WWC - Lots of title changes! Black Gordman beat the Invader for the North American belt, but dropped it back to him a few weeks later. Carlos Colon won the Universal title from Medic #1. And Bob Sweetan beat Sweet Daddy Siki for the Puerto Rican title. WWF - Finally, the Federation brought in Bob Orton Jr but lost the Masked Superstar. Big John Studd ended Snuka's World title reign, then started a feud with Pedro Morales over the belt. Unfortunately, he's not getting anywhere near as good matches in the main events as the Superfly was. Snuka is now working a 'respect' angle with Chief Jay Strongbow, who rescued him from a post-match beatdown at the hands of Big John, turning Jimmy face.

The first show of a new era for GLOW... That's right, the T & A era!! (In other words, I finally took Doc's advice and changed us in the editor - let's see if it does us any good.) Starts with a bikini contest (expect to se even MORE of them from now on.) Sally beats Bambi, with Monty hosting. (C+) Rosa Winner cuts a brief promo. (E) On their way backstage, Sally lays out Bambi. (E) Vine introduces her new bodyguard, Spike. (C-) Vine beats Americana, with Spike's help. (C-) Mount Fiji returns! And she's brought a new friend, Irene Rock - just turned pro wrestler. (C-) California Doll beats Bambi. (C-) Beastie hypes tonight's match with Tammy. (C) So does Tammy. (C) Fiji and Rock beat Kelly and Attache, Rock beating Kelly after a big splash which brings the crowd to their feet. This girl can FLY. (D) Penny Banner fires T-shirts into the crowd. Hey, we know when we've got a good thing going! (B-) Americana beats Penny and Olympia in the second bikini contest of the night. (C+) Announcers hype Tammy/Beastie. (C) Tammy beats Beastie, who's looking stale. (C-) C-, and that magic 'should have improved our popularity' message. Monty used too much, will have to find a new host for bikini contests, I guess...
