WCW Hotline

2nd Week of March 1996

Option 1: Uncensored Control Center!

Option 2: Announced for WCW Monday Nitro!

Option 3: What the world ISN’T watching!

Option 4: WCW Disney/MGM taping results!

Option 5: Mean Gene’s backstage pass!

Option 6: The Monday Night War Neilson ratings!

Option 7: Tony Schiavone’s WCW moment of the week!

Option 8: Mike Tenay’s International Report!

Option 9: A gift from the WCW Catalog!

Option 1: Uncensored Control Center!

The wildest night in WCW is looking even wilder than before! Dustin Rhodes will meet Randy Savage in the confines of a steel cage, Steve Austin takes on “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair, and Scott Hall meets “The Dragon” Ricky Steamboat! There will be more added throughout next week, so keep watching WCW programming to learn more! And don't forget to call your cable company and order now so you don't get left out of the action!

Option 2: Announced for this week’s WCW Monday Nitro!

WCW will be coming your way live this Monday, and we have heard there will be a United States Heavyweight title match, Cruiserweight championship match, and Ric Flair taking on a special challenge from Scott Steiner! Also, we will hear from both Dustin Rhodes and Randy Savage ahead of their steel cage match this coming Sunday at Uncensored! For all the best action on Monday nights, tune into WCW Nitro!

Option 3: What the world ISN’T watching!

What's this we hear? They're actually trying to win, and in our backyard? Raw took place in The Omni, and they pulled out all the stops by putting on PPV quality matches such as the corpse of Mean Mark defeating the Heartbroke Joke, and then Owen's brother wins over Vinnie Vegas. Good matches for sure, but watch Nitro for two even bigger and better matches!

Option 4: Last weekend’s WCW Disney/MGM taping results!

The Flying Spyder, King Puma, and a sick looking Surge come out to confront the Dungeon of Doom, and Spyder says that they will pay for whatever the have done to his friend! He demands the antidote to the injection they gave him at Superbrawl, but Dr. Karnage says that either he or King Puma will have a chance at it at Uncensored – as long as they put their mask on the line to get it! (D)

Nick Bockwinkel comes out to talk about how people had forgotten about him, but that they should never forget that he was one of the founders of the Kings of Wrestling; and he has just given his present company a brand new piece to the puzzle. He says that in the future, anyone who gets in the way of the KoW will have to face their Wrath! (C+)

Wrath d. Erin O'Grady with a pumphandle slam (D+)

Chris Candido d. Booker T to retain the WCW Television title with a quick rollup ©

Harlem Heat d. Bobby Walker and Erin O'Grady with the Heatseeker (C-)

The Panel – announces that Jeff Jarrett and Diamond Dallas Page will compete at Uncensored in a guitar on a pole match ©

Harley Race is interviewed by The Panel, joined by Devon King, California Kip, and “Sting”. Race praises Kip and “Sting” for their wins as of late, and while admitting that Devon won his last match, he didn't do it by listening to the experience of Harley. Harley says that he spoke to Eric Bischoff and has set Devon up in a US title match on Nitro, and Devon is terrified! (C+)

Nitro video recap: Dustin Rhodes announces that he will face Randy Savage at Uncensored in a steel cage match! (B+)

Johnny B. Badd d. Rick Martel with a Diss That Don't Miss after Badd Girl distracts Martel (C+)

Option 5: Mean Gene’s backstage pass!

WCW seems as though they are doing some “spring cleaning” early! Last week, we reported on a slew of wrestlers who are no longer with the company, leaving on good terms. However, this week someone was pushed out the door! Paul Levesque, known as Terra Ryzing, Jean-Paul Levesque, and recently JPL, provoked and then got in a fight with the man under the mask of The Flying Spyder backstage at Nitro. Despite concerns by Eric Bischoff, troubleshooting road agent Harley Race said, in much more gruff terms, that we don't put up with that in WCW, and he forcefully removed Paul from both the premises and the company! In contract news, WCW has sealed the deal to keep Sting on the roster for quite some time, and also have negotiated a new year long contract with MVS Multivision to keep airing pay per views in Mexico. Also… ugh, say it isn't so! Bobby “The Weasel” Heenan has signed to stay with WCW!

Option 6: The Monday Night War Neilson ratings!

Nitro did a huge 8.05 rating this week, coming off a strong Superbrawl. Raw, on the other hand, languished with a 4.46. Better luck next time?

Option 7: Tony Schiavone’s moment of the week!

While it was a huge announcement that Dustin Rhodes will face Randy Savage in a steel cage at Uncensored, WCW showed that it was completely uncensored and shocking all the time when Ron Simmons won the United States championship on WCW Pro this past week!

Option 8: Mike Tenay’s International Report!

A shocker on the Dragon Tour saw NJPW's IWGP World Heavyweight title change hands this past week! Akira Taue wrestled the title away from long-time champion and international sensation Jushin Liger! Taue won the belt last year from April until October, winning and losing it to Liger each time; can one of them ever defeat the other for good?

Option 9: A special gift from the WCW Catalog!

Officially licensed JPL t-shirts, posters, and action figures are 50% off! Order yours now, before this item disappears from the wrestling world – just like he did!

----------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for the comments, guys. I agree crackerjack, but then again Flair is almost perpetually a tweener in many ways; his face and heel personas are never really all that different. He transcends face and heel - he is "The Nature Boy" and the only thing that changes is who he gives the low blow to! And as for Willow and Surge, as you see on Saturday Night there is a big match happening thanks to that at Uncensored, so all the kids are probably really getting behind the heroes as they quest for their friend's safety! Everyone should applaud the Spyder and King Puma for standing by their fellow man like this!

And yes - you read the thing in Gene's section right. When I'm already in the middle of sending people to the unemployment line, who would be dumb enough to start a fight?! Hogan can have his morale issues for me firing his protege, he's off in Hollywood making movies at the moment anyways :)

God damn JPL got released that sucks. To be fair he didn't play a major role in this diary and maybe he will be back later on. But in good news RON SIMMONS IS US CHAMPION DAMN! I really like the Championship match coming up for the belt, it should be a sloberknocker. Also how long have those damn Armstrongs been champs?

Official Prediction Card

Dustin Rhodes vs. Randy Savage

Comments: Babyface usually takes a stip. rematch, and that trend continues as Rhodes takes out Randy

Steve Austin vs. Ric Flair

Comments: This gets thrown out, and a rematch is set up where Austin goes over.

The Road Warriors vs. Arn Anderson/Owen Hart

Ricky Steamboat vs. Scott Hall

Comments: Steamboat is putting guys over at this point in his career.

Dustin Rhodes vs. Randy Savage

Comments: I know I predicted a Terri turn at SuperBrawl, but the fact that you're now openly having the characters teasing the possibility makes me think it's a smoke screen.

Steve Austin vs. Ric Flair

Comments: Austin will win if this is a one-off, but if this is going to become a fullblown feud Ric should probably take this one.

Official Prediction Card

Dustin Rhodes vs. Randy Savage

Comments: For whatever reason I just can't see Savage taking the belt here, the whole Terri thing is interesting though perhaps this is the match when Terri turns on Rhodes and Rhodes snaps. Or perhaps it could go the other way around and Rhodes becomes and anxious husband like Marc Mero and Sable back in the day. Now that could be interesting.

Steve Austin vs. Ric Flair

Comments: This seems like a long term feud which will be good for Austin so Flair gets the cheap first win.

The Road Warriors vs. Arn Anderson/Owen Hart

Comments: Vader/Giant need challengers and Warriors are the perfect opponents.

Ricky Steamboat vs. Scott Hall

Comments: Hall could have a long term life in WCW while Steamboat is on the way out. Also a Steamboat vs Jericho feud would be amazing!

Diamond Dallas Page vs. Jeff Jarrett

Comments: I think Jarrett is being treated more favourably in this universe.

US Battle Royal Featuring:

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Big Bubba Rogers vs. Dave Finlay vs. Meng vs. Paul Orndorff vs. Ron Simmons vs. Stevie Ray vs. Terry Gordy vs. Wrath vs. ???

Runner Up: Bam Bam Bigelow

Mystery Participant: Devon King, like TFC said Harley puts him in.

Comments: Simmons just won it! However I could see it being flipped flopped.

Chris Candido vs. Chris Jericho vs. Booker T

Comments: This one sounds to obvious, but I'll go with Jericho.

King Puma vs. Rio the Renegade

Comments: Puma!!!

Tiebreaker: How long will the main event last? 30:00

(Closest to the right time without going over wins)

10 points plus one tiebreaker! Use your best luck to win the day!

Dustin Rhodes vs. Randy Savage

Comments: Think Dustin solidifies his reign without Terri shenanigans

Steve Austin vs. Ric Flair

Comments: Think this would be to put over the Rebel Austin is becoming with an instant classic with Flair

The Road Warriors vs. Arn Anderson/Owen Hart

Comments: Gotta still believe the Horsemen will look strong with Arn and Owen going over Hawk and Animal

Ricky Steamboat vs. Scott Hall

Comments: The Outsider versus the Dragon is a tough call can definitely see the savy vet Steamboat pulling out some tricks but think the Outsider escapes with a victory

Diamond Dallas Page vs. Jeff Jarrett

Comments: Could definitely see DDP being your People's Champion and conquering one of the biggest pieces of the New World Order would be a huge step forward

US Battle Royal Featuring:

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Big Bubba Rogers vs. Dave Finlay vs. Meng vs. Paul Orndorff vs. Ron Simmons vs. Stevie Ray vs. Terry Gordy vs. Wrath vs. ???

Chris Candido vs. Chris Jericho vs. Booker T

Comments: All three of the guys can be building block pieces think the Lionheart shows his cowardly sneaky side

King Puma vs. Rio the Renegade

Comments: A King or a Renegade think this comic story either starts or gets buried in the middle of the card I'll pick the King on Luck

Tiebreaker: 25:20

Official Prediction Card

Dustin Rhodes vs. Randy Savage

Comments: You've done a great job of making it hard to pick a winner here, but I'm going with Savage picking up the win, and the belt, after some shenanigans. I also see one more match between these two in the future where Dustin reclaims the belt.

Steve Austin vs. Ric Flair

Comments: The Nature Boy steals this one I think.

The Road Warriors vs. Arn Anderson/Owen Hart

Comments: A win here would set them nicely on the path to challenge for the Tag Team Titles.

Ricky Steamboat vs. Scott Hall

Comments: Steamboat should be putting The Bad Guy over here I think.

Diamond Dallas Page vs. Jeff Jarrett

Comments: Another tough one. Both guys should have considerable upsides at this point in their careers, but I'm going with DDP.

US Battle Royal Featuring:

Bam Bam Bigelow vs. Big Bubba Rogers vs. Dave Finlay vs. Meng vs. Paul Orndorff vs. Ron Simmons vs. Stevie Ray vs. Terry Gordy vs. Wrath vs. Kevin Nash

Runner Up: Bam Bam Bigelow

Mystery Participant: Kevin Nash

Comments: This is really more of a fantasy pick than anything else. I'm a huge Nash fan and I would love to see you bring him in.

Chris Candido vs. Chris Jericho vs. Booker T

Comments: Could just as easily see Jericho picking up the win here though.

WCW Monday Nitro

March 11th, 1996

Held at: Dallas Convention Center in Dallas, Texas (Mid South)

Commentary: Tony Schiavone and Jesse “The Body” Ventura

Attendance: 10,000 (sold out!)

Show Runtime: Two Hours

Rating: B+

This show increased our popularity in 17 regions.

Last week on Monday Nitro!

The show opens with Mike Tenay as he narrates the end of last week's episode: Dustin Rhodes and Randy Savage meet in a steel cage this Sunday at WCW Uncensored!

Rating: C-

Kings of Wrestling En Masse

The show opens with Executive V.P. Eric Bischoff in the ring along with one of the main leaders of the Kings of Wrestling, Roddy Piper. At their backs are Harley Race, World Tag Team champions The Giant and Vader, California Kip, and Wrath; and at their sides are Woman and Nick Bockwinkel. Race has the microphone, as he talks about how Uncensored is coming up this Sunday, and that will be the night in which the glory returns to the Kings of Wrestling when Randy Savage takes “that punk kid” apart. Eric Bischoff talks then, that smarmy grin plastered across his face as he thanks the fans for being here to watch the KoW, and promises to give them one hell of a show! He urges fans to tune into Uncensored, because the Kings have some huge landmines in store for WCW's “star athletes” (using finger quotes along with that phrase) that all the fans will want to witness.

The group are interrupted from their self-indulgent ramblings by one of the men who have no fear of them – Steve Austin! Austin heads down to the ring and takes the microphone right out of the hands of Roddy Piper, saying that the world would appreciate it if Eric Bischoff just shut his little trap right now! Austin says that he's out here for one reason and one reason only, the same reason he came out here last week and confronted Ric Flair: television time. He says that since “our esteemed executive vice president” seemed to not want to put Austin on the card last week or tonight, he's out here to crash the party, and since there's only one “real man” in the ring, he's going to get right into his face. “So Piper, let's come down here later and raise hell on one another!” Piper takes another mic from Gary Cappetta, and he replies that as much as he hates Steve Austin, he has to respect a man who comes right into your face. He tells Austin that if he really wants to get down, we can get down – right here in the main event tonight! Eric interjects, saying that since Austin so clearly doesn't want to make it to Uncensored, then tonight we will get a preview of the stipulation matches coming up this Sunday. Tonight, Roddy Piper takes on Steve Austin, and since we're live in Dallas, we will do it in a Texas Bullrope match!

Notes: Piper and Austin looked fantastic here. Piper's interactions with the crowd were masterful, and Austin had them in the calm of his hand. Harley and Eric improvised well, too. Kip and Wrath underwhelmed with all the big names around them, though.

Rating: B

WCW World Cruiserweight Championship

“The Ice Man” Dean Malenko vs. Ultimo Dragon

The opening contest sees Mike Tenay join commentary as the Cruiserweights do battle. Malenko and Dragon have met a few times before, and it's obvious that they have been paying attention to one another's maneuvers very well as they go tit-for-tat all through this match. Syxx is seen watching from the outside, but he doesn't have any impact on the match. Ultimo is in control with a kick flurry, and that is when Sonny Onoo comes out. He cheers Dragon on, Tony noting that it seems Onoo wants back with the man now that he may win the title back, but that only takes Ultimo's head out of the match. It distracts him just as he was about to perform a top rope hurricanrana, and the champion transitions him straight into a gutbuster and the Cloverleaf for a submission victory. Sonny shakes his head and leaves in disgust.

Say Your Prayers

We have a pre-taped promo sent in by “Loose Cannon” Brian Pillman. It's in his home, and he sits on a couch reading a book until he notices the camera. He talks about how, much like Steve Austin, Eric Bischoff is trying to keep them sitting at home lately. However, he says that just like Austin, Brian is intending to make his way to The Palace of Auburn Hills, but he isn't going to tell anyone what he intends to do while he's there. Will he show up at Uncensored? “Maybe… but people are going to have to say their prayers and take their vitamins if they think they can stop Pillmania from running wild!”

Notes: Brian improvised well.

Savage Actions

Randy Savage is set to go down to the ring, but he doesn't appear immediately. Finally we go backstage and find him, and he is assaulting Baron Leonard Tomas?! Commentary are baffled by this, and Savage brings his prey out to the aisle. He decimates Tomas, taking him down to the ring and slamming his head into the guardrail. Savage climbs onto the ring apron, and he comes down with a double axe handle, before taking it into the ring and drilling a flying elbow into the chest of the Baron!

Savage takes a microphone as medical personnel tend to Leonard. He says that this is what we have to witness tomorrow at Uncensored: a fight to the death, inside a fifteen foot high cage. Randy says that Dustin keeps talking about family, and people keep asking how and why he could have held Terri as a hostage – “That was my own flesh and blood brother, and I just had him carted out of the arena on a board! If I'll do that to someone I will see in my home life, what will I do to someone who has what the Macho Man wants?!” Savage says that Dustin is a hell of a fighter and could one day be a great champion, but “The Macho Man” isn't ready to lay down for anybody, and in a cage with no rules and no way out, no woman at ringside to screw him over, it's time for Savage to “rise to the tippy top of the mountain, oooooh yeah!”

Notes: Lanny has changed away from the Baron gimmick, now a weaselly old school heel. The gimmick change rated an A* (99). Savage improvised well in his promo.

Feel the Bang and Bam Bam

“Mean” Gene Okerlund is with Diamond Dallas Page and Bam Bam Bigelow now. The two talk about their matches upcoming at Uncensored this Sunday. DDP says that he's getting tired of seeing Jeff Jarrett everywhere he turns, and when he takes down that guitar he's gonna give Jarrett a brand new collar with it! Gene asks Bigelow about his match, where anyone could show up for the battle royal, but Bigelow doesn't care. He says that he is looking forward to taking home some WCW gold, and will prove that he is the toughest man in World Championship Wrestling.

Of Masks and Men

We go now to pre-taped interviews conducted by “The Professor” Mike Tenay. We cut back and forth between the two separate interviews, as one is done with the Dungeon of Doom and the other with the team of superheroes. Dr. Karnage and The Flying Spyder do all the talking for their respective men. The Spyder says that the first priority right now is getting the antidote for Surge's condition, as he has been acting so strangely as of late. Surge is seen in the background, convulsing in the arms of King Puma. Dr. Karnage laughs at the heroes, saying that the moon is nearly full and that will mean the end of their partnership in favor of the Dungeon of Doom taking over the wrestling world. The superhero side talks about how Dr. Karnage needs to be stopped before he does anything else, tries to take anything else from them or anyone else. He doesn't go into much more debate on it, simply saying that once they are at full strength again, they will take the fight to the Dungeon! Dr. Karnage closes his section with a loud, booming laugh.

Notes: Tenay's performance was good in both interviews. While Puma's performance as a menacing wall was good, Willow underperformed.

WCW United States Heavyweight Championship

“All-American” Ron Simmons vs. Devon King w/Harley Race

Devon is terrified of Simmons, but that fear causes him to fight very defensively and ends up able to take the fight to the champion quite a few times. Ron is clearly surprised at the skills demonstrated by the young man, but he still has the experience edge, which gives him the poise to catch King off a leaping attack and drill him to the mat with a spinebuster. Devon gets his foot on the bottom rope though, and the match continues. Race tries to slip Devon a foreign object, but King gives it right back, saying that he isn't going to win that way – but a shoulder tackle proves too much for the young King, and Harley is left shaking his head as the three count is scored for the champion.

The Natural Champion

“Mean” Gene is out after a commercial break, and he introduces his guest at this time, World Heavyweight champion “The Natural” Dustin Rhodes! Dustin comes out to huge cheers, with Terri at his side. Gene says that we are only a few days away from “D-Day” as Dustin enters the steel cage with Randy Savage. Rhodes laughs, saying that it will be “D-Day” but that's because this is Dustin's day. He talks about having great respect for Randy Savage and his illustrious career, but this isn't 1988 – it's 1996, and this is Dustin Rhodes's time. He says that with both the Kings of Wrestling and Terri on the outside of the cage, this will be one hundred percent one-on-one, man-to-man, and the only way to win is to beat your opponent senseless enough to win the match. Okerlund asks Dustin, after the attack earlier that Randy Savage laid upon his own brother, what does he feel he can do against a man as wild as Savage? Dustin's only answer is… to be wilder and crazier than the wildest, craziest man in wrestling.

Notes: Gene was superb improvising here, having the crowd in the palm of his hand.

Uncensored is This Sunday!

Scott Hall & Syxx w/Woman vs. Cactus Jack and Jake “The Snake” Roberts

Tony notes that in some other universe, Cactus and Roberts would probably be a perfect student and master. Here, they do battle at one another's side against the Kings of Wrestling best friends duo of Hall and Syxx, and this is a fight from bell to bell. Syxx's quickness puts his side in charge as he nails Jack with a spinning heel kick. He and Hall take over on Cactus through an entire commercial break, but he refuses to die as “The Snake” gets the crowd to cheer Jack on. Cactus comes back with a flurry of forearms and punches in the corner, and finally makes the big tag to Jake. Roberts comes in with punches and a short-arm clothesline on Syxx, before drilling him with the DDT to pick up a win for his team!

Their fight isn't finished though, as the monstrous team of Vader and The Giant hit the ring and assault the two! Hall and Syxx throw a few stomps in for good measure, but this is all the KoW Monsters decimating the two fan favorites. Two chokeslams finally close the attack down, as Jack and Roberts are left lying on the mat.

Match Time: 10:16

Notes: Jake did not come out of the attack looking good.

This week on WCW Saturday Night

A graphic pops up urging fans to not forget about WCW Saturday Night this weekend in all the excitement of Uncensored, as Bam Bam Bigelow takes on “Latino Heat” Eddy Guerrero!

Rating: C+

“The Nature Boy” Ric Flair w/Bobby Heenan vs. Scott Steiner

Tony talks about the ongoing drama between the Steiner Brothers since losing the titles at SuperBrawl, saying that apparently Scott requested this match in order to show what he can still do in the ring without his brother at his side. Scott does a great showing for himself, but Jesse keeps talking about how he is primarily a tag team wrestler, and that it could come back to bite him in the long run. Flair is, as always, “dirtiest player in the game” and he lives up to that moniker every chance he gets. However, Steiner is ready for every dirty trick that Flair has up his sleeve, including making sure Eddy Guerrero doesn't get involved in his business with the help of a hard right hand! Guerrero hangs around at ringside, and this eventually draws out “The Dog-Faced Gremlin” Rick Steiner. Scott is upset at this, but Rick keeps Eddy at bay. The match breaks down when Mark Curtis is nailed by a charging Scott. Eddy slips into the ring, and Rick charges him – but he catches Scott with a Steinerline! Ric and Eddy knock Rick out of the ring, and Flair makes a cover (grabbing the tights for good measure) to score a very cheap three count.

The Horsemen leave, laughing, as Rick enters the ring to apologize to Scott. Scott shoves his brother away, telling him that he should have left his match alone! Rick is apologetic, and Tony says this could be a powderkeg ready to go off. Lex Luger, of all people, comes out and tries to keep things calm, separating the brothers and telling them to ease up.

Rick and Scott leave, separately, but a buzz in the crowd turns Luger's attention upwards – and Sting is in the rafters, watching “The Total Package” closely! Lex tries to motion for Sting to come down, but he makes no motions as we head to commercial break.

Texas Bullrope match

“Hot Rod” Roddy Piper w/Harley Race vs. Steve Austin

We head backstage to see Austin on his way to the ring before the commercial, and we come back to see him entering the ring.

Fists fly before the bell even sounds, as Jesse talks about how well these two know one another from their matches at the tail end of last year. Their anger at one another shines through in every strike and every whip of the rope, Piper even choking Austin with the rope a few times. Austin clangs the cowbell on Roddy's head, but is unable to touch all four corners. Piper finally receives a heaping helping of assistance, as not just Vader, not just The Giant, but Wrath as well, come down to the ring and destroy Steve Austin! After a powerbomb, chokeslam, and pumphandle smash, there's nothing left of Austin. Giant lifts him off the mat and carries him around like a child, as Piper walks over and touches all four corners to secure a win that the fans boo loudly!

It seems like time for the Kings of Wrestling to lay Austin out, potentially for good with these four-on-one odds, but of all things… Sting drops down from the rafters into the ring! He stands over Austin, pointing his black baseball bat in the direction of the KoW members, and the four back down! Tony says that the only way to see what happens in the future is to watch Uncensored this Sunday night on pay-per-view!

Just curious if WWF has sued over Pillmania since that's their locker room motto right now (never, ever, ever drug test WWF in this mod). Can't wait for Uncensored.
