WCW '94: War of the Thrones

Recommended Posts

I've been so busy with Risky Business that I haven't kept up with this dynasty as much as I've wanted to. Now I've got to go reading back and see how this Craig Pittman/Disco Inferno team came about. :D I can actually picture the real Ted DiBiase saying that he teamed them up because "Well... I thought it would be hilarious!" I'm guessing they happened to get good chemistry, so you ran with it?

I'm feeling so honored to have finally won a Monthly Spotlight! Big thanks to those who voted for me in the poll, and even bigger thanks for those who have kept up with this for the past year. Hopefully I can occasionally pick up a new reader here and there, but even if it's just the small number of us here to read the exploits of the War of the Thrones, I'll still write it for everyone!

You definitely deserve it, man. I love your diary, and I'm glad to see it get the recognition it deserves. Keep up the great work, man!

A great comedy duo!

Honestly, no chemistry notes for them; I just looked at the two characters and, just as Ted told them, they looked like a funny pairing! :p

Thanks for all the well-wishes people, I will be working at having the next Hotline up soon-ish but in order for this not to be a completely wasted post, I want to address something. I was asked sometime last month about releasing my file of this. If enough people would be interested in playing and checking out the year-long world I've built here, I would do that; however I would be waiting until September in-game to release it. Would there be interest in this?

I have been following your dynasty for awhile now (although I never post on it so I do apologize for that), but if you were to release your file I would love to download it and see it for myself. I think you've done a great job and inspired me a little in my games

As long as you keep writing it, I'll be reading it. You have got an incredible dynasty here.

WCW Hotline: August 1995, Week 1

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/WCWHotline.jpg

WCW Hotline

1st Week of August 1995

Option 1: Slamboree Control Center!

Option 2: News about The Judge!

Option 3: Contract news!

Option 4: WCW Saturday Night preview!

Option 5: Last week’s ratings!

Option 6: “The Professor’s” lesson of the week!

Option 7: Mean Gene’s rumor corner!

Option 8: Monday Night Waste!

Option 9: A gift from the WCW Catalog!

Option 1: Slamboree Control Center!

A huge main event has been signed for Slamboree, as Hollywood Hogan teams up with Randy Savage and he says Roddy Piper, to take on the Chicago trio of Lex Luger and the Road Warriors! Also, Scott Hall will have to pay up his pound of flesh as he takes on the unpredictable Cactus Jack! Expect to see more matches announced this week on WCW Saturday Night, but you better make sure you call your cable company and order now!

Option 2: Judge Dredd presiding!

Sylvester Stallone has been quoted as having had a great time working with WCW, though he chose to head back on the road to promote new summer blockbuster Judge Dredd. World Championship Wrestling will gladly welcome him back any time!

Option 3: Contract news!

The Jeep, a.k.a. Jeep Swenson, has left WCW following the attack on him by The Giant on this past WCW Saturday Night. Officials say they were not pleased with Jeep not wanting to go to one of their development federations, so his contract was allowed to simply expire. Also, Steve Armstrong has signed a new contract extension.

Option 4: WCW Saturday Night preview!

A very big episode of WCW Saturday Night from the Cintas Center in Columbus, Ohio, comes to you on TBS and the BBC! The main event will feature “Macho Man” Randy Savage and “Hired Hand” Scott Hall taking on Steve Austin and Cactus Jack in tag team action! Also, “The Total Package” Lex Luger takes on Johnny B. Badd; the Rock ‘n Roll Express in action against the veterans of the Four Horsemen, “Nature Boy” Ric Flair and “Enforcer” Arn Anderson; Gene Okerlund talks to both Brian Pillman and Chris Jericho; and we will find out who will take on Ultimo Dragon at Slamboree after a Four Corners match between Rey Mysterio Jr., Marty Jannetty, Brad Armstrong, and Syxx! Finally, the debut of some of the members of Dr. Karnage’s Dungeon of Doom! Who knows what else could happen on WCW Saturday Night! We will see you at 2:00 PM ET on BBC or at 6:05 PM ET on The Superstation!

Option 5: Last week’s Neilson ratings!

WCW Saturday Night had an amazing 8.5 rating on the BBC, as well as a 6.4 on TBS. Also a 0.2 on TV Hokkaido and 0.7 on DSF. Meanwhile, Monday Night Raw falls to a 5.1. WCW Main Event had a 0.6 rating.

Option 6: “The Professor” Mike Tenay’s history lesson of the week!

I’ve been handed a list of some of the legends WCW will be honoring at Slamboree by inducting them into the WCW Hall of Fame. I’ve been told that Bill Dundee, Chief Wahoo McDaniel, Magnum TA, and Gordon Solie will be inducted. Call my section of the WCW Hotline next week to hear more names!

Option 7: “Mean Gene” Okerlund’s rumor corner!

Apparently the WWF are really trying to move into a more youth-oriented show, as Bob Backlund is not having his contract renewed! WCW have not made any offers as of yet to the veteran, but that doesn’t mean you may not see him grace our ring in the future, so stayed tuned to World Championship Wrestling!

Option 8: Eric Bischoff presents Monday Night Waste!

To all those who thought that the Burger King as the new piece of scrap tin champion was just a fluke, you will be disappointed to find that he actually defended the belt successfully this week on Raw, defeating former champ Bret Hart in Hart’s rematch. Also, Double J’s impressive run seems to have ended as the face painted freak destroyed him in a lackluster matchup.

Option 9: A special gift from the WCW Catalog!

Order now to get 10% off the new airbrushed “The Total Package” Lex Luger t-shirt featuring the Torture Rack!

WCW Television: August 1995, Week 1

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/WCWSaturdayNight.png

WCW Saturday Night

1st Week of August 1995

Held at: Cintas Center in Columbus, Ohio (Great Lakes)

Attendance: 10,250 (sell out!)

Show Runtime: Two Hours and Three Minutes

Rating: B – This show increased our popularity in 15 regions.

“Eight Days Away”

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/LexLuger.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/Hawk2.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/Animal2.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/WCWs/GeneOkerlund.jpg

We open the show with “Mean” Gene Okerlund talking to “The Total Package” Lex Luger and the Road Warriors in a pre-taped interview from a weight room. Lex does most of the talking as the Warriors are in the background lifting. Lex says that he and his fellow Chicago natives will take it to whoever Hollywood Hogan puts in their way come Slamboree – whether it’s Randy Savage, Roddy Piper, Bubba Rogers, “or that big ugly giant” because Luger and the Road Warriors are ready to destroy the Kings of Wrestling! Okerlund wishes them the best and tries to lift one of the weights that Hawk is using, and can’t even begin to get it off the ground before Luger tells him not to hurt himself, that maybe Gene should stick to the treadmills.

Rating: B+

Notes: Luger was masterful at improvising here, and Gene did well, especially the bit with the weights.

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/WCWs/TonySchiavone.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/WCWs/JesseVentura.jpg

Tony Schiavone and Jesse “The Body” Ventura open us up now by hyping what Lex Luger just had to say, as well as saying that later tonight we will get some footage that is the first time anyone has heard from Sting since Bash at the Beach! So don’t change that dial fans, because we have a lot of great action and all your favorite wrestlers to hear from!

Rating: C+

Notes: Tony worked the crowd into a frenzy when he mentioned Sting.

Winner is #1 Contender for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Brad Armstrong w/Col. Robert Parker vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. “The Rocker” Marty Jannetty vs. Syxx

Time Limit: 30:00

Referee: Randy “Pee Wee” Anderson

Our opening contest this week features four of the fastest paced athletes in the wrestling world, all vying for a championship opportunity at Slamboree. The match doesn’t disappoint, though the crowd’s reaction certainly does. After some great high flying, it’s some experience that wins the day here, as Marty and Brad stay out of the jumping around and thus don’t end up outside on the floor. Rey and Syxx are out of the ring after a big Mysterio suicide dive, and Marty hits the Rocker Dropper to get the victory over Brad. Tony repeats the stipulations of this one: Brad Armstrong now disappears from the Cruiserweight title rankings, Marty goes to the top of the pile, and Rey and Syxx go one-on-one at Slamboree!

Winner in 10:25: Marty Jannetty

Rating: C

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/kow.jpg

Hollywood Hogan is backstage alongside Jimmy Hart, and it looks as though the troops have fallen in. Hogan is surveying them; California Kip, Bubba Rogers, Devon King, and finally The Giant. Hogan talks about all of them briefly, putting over Kip’s athleticism, Bubba’s experience, King’s youthful exuberance, and he says that The Giant is his pride and joy. He tells them that if Roddy doesn’t “get over things” then any one of them could be teaming with he and “Mach” at Slamboree, and they all need to be ready to go in case Hollywood pulls the trigger, dude.

Rating: D+

Notes: Hogan did a superb job with improvising here, just too bad some of these guys aren’t as over as we’d like them to be.

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/Arkane.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/Rio.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/WCWs/JamesMitchell.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/WCWs/LadyAlex.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/vs.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/SteveArmstrong.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/ScottArmstrong.jpg

The Dungeon of Doom w/Dr. Karnage & Nurse Ana R. Key vs. Scott & Steve Armstrong

Time Limit: 20:00

Referee: Charles Robinson

This looks pretty straightforward, doesn’t it? Couple of standard enhancement type guys – especially given that they’re Armstrongs – against two of the big, mean newcomers in the trio called the Dungeon of Doom. Arkane and Rio the Renegade certainly live up to their hype, taking both Scott and Steve to task in this one. Arkane wrestles a very sneaky style, slipping in cheap shots wherever he can, while Rio is a full steam ahead style monster.

However…

LOOK THERE! ON THE TOP ROPE!!!

<iframe width="240" height="135" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/ciyaD7bOgwg?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/Spyder.jpg

Tony is aghast at what we’re seeing, it’s some kind of man dressed like a spider! The man does nothing but crouch atop the top turnbuckle, but his appearance seems to really anger Dr. Karnage! In all the confusion, Steve Armstrong rolls up Arkane from behind, and the Dungeon of Doom’s big debut ends as a flop as Charles counts the three! Jesse calls this interloper a menace, as Dr. Karnage and his boys chase the intruder to the back! Tony says that he has no idea what we’re seeing, but he’s sure we will try to get to the bottom of this very soon!

Winners in 7:04: The Armstrongs

Rating: D-

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/2ColdScorpio.jpg

We are in a pre-taped segment with 2 Cold Scorpio, who is saying that he’s back in WCW with some big things in his future. He says he would have probably been happy to just get back where he was before, but it seems his old partner went ahead and moved on without him. He says that nobody leaves Scorpio behind, and Marcus is going to learn that. He talks about meeting The Patriot on WCW Saturday Night next week, warning him that this time around, “we ain’t steppin’ nothin’ but my foot up your soon-to-be red, white, and black’n’blue butt!”

Rating: C-

Notes: Scorpio enjoyed the freedom of improvising his own promo.

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/ChrisJericho.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/vs.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/TerryTaylor.jpg

“Lionheart” Chris Jericho vs. Terry Taylor

Time Limit: 20:00

Referee: Nick Patrick

A man who made a few feathers rustle last week with some comments now comes down to the ring for his second match in WCW, this time taking on veteran Terry Taylor. Taylor’s experience edge leads to a better match for Jericho than Flash Flanagan did last week, but the second verse is the same as the first – Jericho takes charge and rallies into a facebuster, leading to the very impressive springboarding Lionsault to get the victory.

Winner in 7:05: Chris Jericho

Rating: D+

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/WCWs/GeneOkerlund.jpg

“Mean” Gene comes out and meets Chris Jericho after the match, and he wastes no time in asking about Jericho’s comments last week. “Lionheart” reiterates the same, saying that he is here to be WCW’s hero, a hero who doesn’t run away at the first sign of problems. A hero who will stand and fight for his followers, “and just look at my pretty face, why would I ever cover this up with paint?” Gene asks why Jericho seems to be picking so much at Sting, if he’s ever heard the phrase of letting sleeping dogs lie, but Jericho says that he has no problem with talking about anyone in World Championship Wrestling – after all, he’s the “Lionheart”.

Rating: B-

Notes: Jericho is proving to be masterful at improvisation, while Gene always enjoys it himself.

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/RickySteamboat.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/ScottSteiner.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/RickSteiner.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/WCWs/TonySchiavone.jpg

Tony Schiavone now gives us a special telephone interview with Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat and the Steiner Brothers! Ricky says that his recovery after last month’s vicious attack is going well, and he expects to be back in the ring very soon. Rick and Scott, however, talk about two big matches for Slamboree; the two of them take on Ric Flair and Arn Anderson, as well as Dustin Rhodes going on-on-one with Owen Hart! Tony wishes all of them luck, especially “The Dragon” on getting back into fighting shape.

Rating: B-

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/Smash.jpg

In a dark room backstage, we see one half of the Demolishers, Smash, standing. He talks to the camera, saying that everyone’s been asking him why he did what he did last week to his long-time partner, Ax. Smash says that there was one reason and one reason only – because he wasn’t about to be pulled down into mediocrity along with someone who was only here for a bit of nostalgia. He says that Ax left the team behind a long time ago, and left him standing alone with some punk kid. Smash says that he carried the team ever since it started, and now he’s going to show that he’s at the top of the food chain, looking down on all the little people who never mattered to begin with.

Rating: C-

Notes: Something to keep in mind for the future; Smash cannot improvise well.

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/RicFlair.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/ArnAnderson.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/WCWs/BobbyHeenan3.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/vs.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/RickyMorton.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/RobertGibson.jpg

The Four Horsemen w/Bobby Heenan vs. The Rock ‘n Roll Express

Time Limit: 30:00

Referee: Randy “Pee Wee” Anderson

The Horsemen seem more focused than usual, which Tony says is likely as a result of Arn and Ric finding out that they will be facing the Steiners next Sunday at Slamboree. This is a great little old school tag team matchup with perfect formula by the men who helped to exemplify it. This would be a main event anywhere in the world had this been even five or six years ago; but alas, this one is never in much doubt, as the Express have been running on low steam for quite a while now. Flair and Anderson, however, haven’t looked much better, and despite a last minute rally, Flair rolls up Ricky with puts his feet on the ropes in order to get the pinfall.

Winners in 11:39: Ric Flair & Arn Anderson

Rating: B

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/DustinRhodes.jpghttp://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/BarryWindham.jpg

The match is over, Flair and Anderson are laughing at their defeated opponents. But the laughter doesn’t last long, as out of the back rush the Texas Blackjacks, Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham! Tony calls it cowardice, but Jesse says the Horsemen were being smart by rushing out of the ring and heading backstage in a hurry, leaving Dustin and Barry in the ring to check on Morton and Gibson.

Tony sends us to footage from Ted DiBiase’s home from through the week. Ted is joined by Richard Stevenson, who is doing some paperwork in the corner, and the man called Sting! Sting seems to be asking DiBiase about getting a World title shot, saying that with Ted’s role as a major stockholder making him an authority in WCW, if anyone can get some results it’d be DiBiase. Ted thanks Sting for thinking of him to do this, but says that he already has been trying long before Sting ever came to him. DiBiase says that he has had his top man (motioning toward Stevenson) working on this, because if there’s anybody we know can defeat Hollywood Hogan and take down the KoW, it’s Sting! Sting gets a little excited, but DiBiase says that unfortunately, the contracts are all ironclad. There is no way that DiBiase can override it, and if he did, then Commissioner Bockwinkel would be able to revoke Ted’s authority due to Ted being seen as “playing favorites” which he cannot look to be doing. Sting shakes his head, saying “I guess it’s true, then,” as he leaves the room, not even bothering with any pleasantries.

“Mean” Gene Okerlund is in the ring, and he brings out “The Loose Cannon” Brian Pillman! Pillman answers the call, and Gene asks him just what he’s been talking about with this whole pencil business. Brian says that he’s found out things that someone like “Scheme Gene” could only dream about – the men really behind the scenes, the men even bigger than Bockwinkel! Bigger than DiBiase! And once he breaks the hand that holds the pencil, then “The Loose Cannon” will be on top of all the king’s horses and all the regular men! Brian devolves into crazed laughter, as Okerlund tries to keep questioning him. Brian answers no more questions though, leaving the ring and the arena entirely.

Rating: B-

Notes: Pillman did a masterful job of improvising here, and Gene was superb.

“Professor” Mike Tenay is backstage alongside Johnny B. Badd and his Badd Girl, and Johnny has a challenge to lay out to Sting. He says that Sting is a coward who hasn’t accepted his challenge for a Slamboree rematch yet, but he will be in the ring next to show what he can do against Sting’s former best friend, Lex Luger! Tenay says that he’s sure Sting will accept because that’s who Sting is, but Badd says Sting got lucky at the Bash, but if he shows his ugly, painted face in front of Badd again, he’ll knock him out!

Rating: C+

Notes: Badd struggled with handling his own dialogue, but Tenay enjoyed the freedom.

Johnny B. Badd w/Badd Girl vs. “The Total Package” Lex Luger

Time Limit: 30:00

Referee: Mark Curtis

This match was a test on Johnny B. Badd. After an amazing match against Sting and then a decent match against Rick Steiner, now he goes into the ring against Lex Luger to see if he can bring good matches as his contract winds down. Badd’s selling of Luger’s early powerful offence has the crowd rolling, until his Badd Girl distracts official Mark Curtis and puts Badd in a great position to hit a low blow and start choking Luger on the ropes. Johnny controls a good portion of the match, taking it to Lex on the mat. But Luger has that incredible fight (and also is in the midst of a very hot storyline with the heads of the KoW) and thus cannot be kept down for long, and he ducks under a bodypress attempt and starts hitting clotheslines. A big powerslam later, and the Badd Girl can only watch in horror as Johnny is lifted into the Human Torture Rack and is forced to submit to the pain, giving “The Total Package” a big victory.

Winner in 16:05: Lex Luger

http://i1325.photobucket.com/albums/u628/beejus1/WCW-94/HulkHogan2.jpg

Tony starts talking about going to commercial, but “Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)” interrupts, and Schiavone instead pleads with the guys in the truck to keep it here. They do, as Hollywood Hogan comes out to the top of the aisle. He applauds Luger, but gets on the mic to say that as impressive as Lex looked in that match, “Johnny is no Hollywood Hogan, brother,” and tells Luger that he is still a choker because when he got the chance, he couldn’t win the big one. Luger looks hot and ready to go fight, but the fight comes to him…

From behind comes Bubba Rogers and The Giant! The two behemoths take Luger and decimate him after the match, despite Lex’s vain attempts to fight back. Tony talks about how the Road Warriors are not in the building, but Jesse says they shouldn’t have to be, there are a lot of WCW wrestlers back there who are not doing anything to stop the KoW from doing these kind of things! “The Total Package” suffers another huge chokeslam just like he had at Bash at the Beach, and Hogan laughs at him as we finally get to that commercial break.

WCW Stockholder Ted DiBiase is walking backstage, with Richard Stevenson following close behind as usual. He walks into an office, where WCW Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel is pacing back and forth. DiBiase asks Nick what he thinks he’s doing, but Bockwinkel asks the same of DiBiase. Nick seems taken aback by the idea that neither of them know what’s going on, but DiBiase says that if the word he’s getting from on top is the same as the word Nick is getting, then they may need to put their differences aside to find out what’s going on in the future of WCW.

We take some time to check in with Tony and Jesse, who are blown away by the big challenge just accepted for Slamboree! They also talk about the attack that Hollywood Hogan and his KoW “cronies” just perpetuated on Lex Luger, who had just won a hard-fought match. Jesse says that he isn’t surprised, “it’s Hogan’s way to stab people in the back like that” but he looks for Lex Luger to come back stronger than before, as he typically does. Tony says that we only have one final event to come this evening, and that is our big tag team main event!

Rating: C+

Notes: Tony sounded very forced in his condemnation here, but Jesse was superb at speaking on the fly about Hogan. I wonder why…

“Hired Hand” Scott Hall & “Macho Man” Randy Savage vs. Steve Austin & Cactus Jack

Time Limit: TV Time Remaining

Referee: Tommy Young

Our main event features four of not only the best talents in wrestling today, but some of the wildest. Jack and Hall are very willing to fight one another just eight days away from their one-on-one match at Slamboree, while Austin and Savage are just ready to go at one another in general. Austin is the one who gets worked over, which Ventura claims is very smart on Savage and Hall’s part because “Cactus would just enjoy getting a two-on-one beating like this, and then we would be here all night.” But when the time comes, Austin doesn’t even need to make the hot tag to get the match in his favor – when Savage goes up for the flying elbow, his own partner shoves him off the top rope! Hall walks out on the match, shrugging his shoulders when Savage questions him; but it doesn’t matter because “Macho Man” is left two-on-one! Jack and Hall work Savage over to huge cheers from the crowd, leading to a Stunner and pinfall for Austin and Cactus! As WCW Saturday Night fades out, the one question on everyone’s mind is what just happened with Scott Hall?!

Winners in 16:32: Steve Austin & Cactus Jack

Okay, so a bit of honesty here. I kinda put the square wheels on this show, because over in the tech support forum, Adam said that come the next patch around the end of the month, TV negotiations will be recalculated. And given that we are in August, well... I'm waiting to see how that goes. So I'll be posting the Hotline whenever I can, and Slamboree is only one Saturday Night away, so I'm not going to leave everyone hanging for long - but just bear with me a bit, because I'm giving this a bit of pause until the end of the month.

Loved the show man. As you know, I only pop in now and again as I'm not all that familiar with the era or the company, but it's always good to sit and read a full show of yours, as you write so well...

Is there anywhere I can take a look at your full roster with pushes etc?? Always nice to know where people are in a company :) Like where Jericho comes in at?

Well, I hope you won't be disappointed with this news, but once things get rolling again, I'm probably going to change things to a full recap style. Who remembers Matt Shannon's 1991 WWF game? Yeah, kinda like that. I just feel like it's taking me too long to write everything, and in order to keep things moving I think that a change like that would be for the best. Of course, events would stay how they are currently, being events and all.

I haven't done a full roster listing in quite some time, but I can do one sometime soon. Probably at the end of the month. I keep a lot of lower people overpushed (a lot of the openers and ETs on autopush are being kept up at lower and midcard level) but Jericho came in at lower midcard. I actually stole him from AJPW, where he was their Junior Heavyweight champ.

I can't quite wrap my head around the bizarrness of the DoD and Arachnaman. But overall a decent show.

Hopefully when the patch comes, you'll be able to get Nitro.

-I'm glad to hear TV negotiations are being adjusted.

-Is Brad playing Arachnaman?

-I think it's a good call to avoid the lame 80's babyface Jericho played when he first came to WCW and jump straight to the arrogant heel he played so well.

As Nitro goes; I definitely hope so. I've been able to get it in a test game, so things are looking bright. But once things get recalculated, we shall see how it goes.

I agree about Jericho. At this point in his career, he may not have had much of a heel aura about him, so I understand why they had him just be a generic cruiserweight face. But like I said, he was pretty high profile internationally when I got my hands on him already; so I'm going to run with it.

And here's a Hotline exclusive; Dr. Karnage has told us that the mystery of the strange man dressed as a spider will be on told next week on WCW Saturday Night! :D

The good thing is, this brief pause will help me to focus on the new series's I've been paying attention to, while also letting me recharge my own batteries. As of late, my eyes haven't been on TEW as much at all, I've started watching Game Grumps, and also catching up on Bleach. I'm on episode 66 out of what feels like six million :o Also I've been doing a chronological viewing of the entire WWE Network, including all Old Schools and TV shows. I'm into 1986!

Wahoo McDaniel will take on the Masked Superstar in a Legend’s Showdown! Call your cable company now and reserve your seat on the sofa for the Legend’s Reunion!

Option 2: Brian Pillman on the fringe!

Brian Pillman, “The Loose Cannon”, seems to be up to his old tricks. He has accosted WCW Main Event announcer, Eric Bischoff, shouting at him to try and do something for him. But what could Eric do? What game is Pillman playing at? Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel has said that WCW is not about to take this – in his own words – “threatened blackmail” stand idle, and he will have something to say about it on WCW Saturday Night!

Option 3: WCW birthdays!

This August, WCW wishes a happy birthday to Jody Hamilton, 57, Hollywood Hogan, 42, Terry Taylor, 40, Bobby Eaton, 37, Stevie Ray, 37, Tom Prichard, 36, Dean Malenko, 35, Badd Girl, 28, and young Devon King, 23!

Option 7: “Mean Gene” Okerlund’s rumor corner!

Quite a few masked wrestlers seem to be showing up in World Championship Wrestling as of late. The Patriot was around last year at this time, but then international superstar Ichii Yazaki, then the cruiserweights such as Rey Mysterio Jr., Juventud Guerrera, Psychosis, and current kingpin Ultimo Dragon. But now there’s this new spider character; he looks familiar, but with that mask who can know for sure? I think it may have something to do with this strange cast in the Dungeon of Doom!

Option 8: Eric Bischoff presents Monday Night Waste!

Instead of Eric Bischoff, a recording plays saying that this option is unavailable this week; as due to the actions of Brian Pillman last week, Eric has taken the week off from the WCW Hotline.

Option 9: A special gift from the WCW Catalog!

WCW World War 3 will be released on VHS this month, and you know you want to own the first-ever sixty man battle royal! “This week on WCW Saturday Night!

The World Tag Team championships are defended against the Ruthless Roundtable! The Road Warriors do battle with two of the Kings of Wrestling! The Patriot waves in to take on a man who showed his true colors in 2 Cold Scorpio! Hakushi and Ultimo Dragon try to do Vader’s dirty work for Sonny Onoo against JPL and Marty Jannetty! And Rick and Scott Steiner go against the ever-dangerous Wonderful Destruction Crew!”

In our opening contest, crazed mayhem wins out over pompous arrogance as Steve Austin and Brian Pillman retain their championships over Lord Steven Regal and Earl William Clayton – with a little bit of distraction from “Beautiful” Bobby Eaton at mid-match.

Match Length: 10:09

Rating: B

The Four Horsemen are backstage, and “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair does most of the talking as they discuss Slamboree opponents Dustin Rhodes and the Steiner Brothers. “The Brain” says that the Horsemen are the elite, and they will prove it by putting down the Dog-Faced Gremlin and making sure Dustin looks even more unnatural than he already does. The strange part of this is that he also says that the “Loose Cannon” is going to get a silencer put on him… so I guess WCW aired this interview before they should have.

Rating: C+

Despite great fan support, the team of JPL and “The Rocker” Marty Jannetty are defeated by Sonny Onoo’s Japanese contingent of Ultimo Dragon and Hakushi. Marty is left all alone when “The Monster” Vader rushes the ring and pulls JPL’s attention away, and in the commotion Onoo comes in and gives Jannetty a karate kick to the stomach, leading to Hakushi pinning him with the Praying Power Bomb.

Match Length: 9:22

Rating: C

The Dungeon of Doom are being interviewed by “Professor” Mike Tenay, and Dr. Karnage tells us a story of creation. He says that as proud as he is of his current creations, he had a prototype originally who was his pride and joy. He explains that he gave his first creation free will, however, and the day came that his creation left him when he was going to unveil him as his great contribution to science, making him look like a fool. Dr. Karnage explains that this creation was The Flying Spyder, and that is the man who interrupted the big unveiling again last week – but, Karnage says he will not be made the fool again. He says that there is another match set up for WCW Main Event against the Armstrongs, and this time, there will be no mistakes.

Notes: Dr. Karnage may not have improvised very well, but Tenay did a great job at holding this all together.

Rating: D-

Belle Libritis on the outside of the ring keeps the crowd going with “U-S-A” chants for The Patriot, and Marcus Bagwell is very informative on commentary about his current and former partner. But in the end, Scorpio is a changed man with a plan, and he twists Patriot’s mask around so he can’t see before hitting a leg lariat and the Tumbleweed for the victory – a clever win, albeit not as decisive as Scorpio would let one think.

Match Length: 6:39

Rating: C+

Eric Bischoff comes out and introduces “Handsome” Harley Race, who talks about hosting tomorrow night’s Hall of Fame ceremony. Race says that to be introduced to the WCW Hall of Fame is one of the greatest feelings he has ever felt, and he’s sure all of the men being inducted tomorrow will share that same sentiment.

Notes: Harley improvised very well here, and Bischoff was superb working without off script.

Rating: D+

The triumphant World Tag Team champions are backstage along with “Professor” Mike Tenay. Austin says that he doesn’t mind not being on the card for Slamboree, it means he can sit back and drink some beers and just watch the action, but Pillman uses this time to say that he has no such desires, because if he isn’t on the show it’s because he’s being written out again, and if “Uncle Eric” doesn’t give in, then he’s going to be sorry!

Notes: Brian and Mike both improvised very well here.

Rating: B

We go to pre-taped footage that shows “The Total Package” Lex Luger during a workout. He’s interrupted by “Macho Man” Randy Savage and “Hot Rod” Roddy Piper, who assures Luger that they aren’t there to fight or to get an advantage, just to talk. Luger says that’s what Piper seems to do best, but Roddy says only the girls know what he does best, heh heh. Piper says that even though The Giant has been accepted by the Kings of Wrestling, he wants to be the bigger man along with Randy here and say that it was not their idea for what happened at the Beach. Luger says that is a strangely noble thing, but Savage tells Lex not to read into it, because at Slamboree, he has Hogan, Piper, and himself ready to put Lex and “those face painted fruitcakes” down and out of wrestling. Luger says understood, and the two leave him.

Notes: Luger was masterful at improvising, and Savage did a superb job of going off script, but Roddy struggled a little bit, going off topic.

Rating: B+

With “Hot Rod” in mind, we see another pre-taped segment featuring him, but this time he is talking to young Devon King. Devon seems to be asking Roddy about when he’s going to get the chance to show his skills in the ring, but Piper tells him to just keep his nose to the grind, he’s under some great training from Bubba and Smasher, and he will get his chance.

Notes: This time, Piper did a great job, working the crowd, who seem to be feeling a little bad for King.

Rating: C+

WCW Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel comes to the ring, he has has Brian Pillman to talk about. He says that Brian is getting in the face of WCW staff again, and that cannot be happening. He says that Pillman claims to have some type of blackmail he’s trying to hold over someone’s head, however, and for that he will be punished. But Nick is going to use enemies to hurt enemies, by making a last-minute match for Slamboree: “Loose Cannon” Brian Pillman will go one-on-one against “Latino Heat” Eddy Guerrero, and to make sure that both men go at one another with reckless abandon, he’s making it a number one contender match for the World TV championship!

Notes: Bockwinkel was very poor improvising here.

Rating: C

“Mean” Gene Okerlund brings in his guests at this time, Rick Rude, Johnny B. Badd, and the ever lovely Badd Girl. Rude does the talking here, saying that he feels inspired by what Johnny has been doing as of late, calling out Sting for Slamboree. Rude says that Sting hasn’t been seen in person since Bash at the Beach, and he’s glad, because maybe that means Sting is thinking over what Rude had to say – and maybe when Sting comes back, it’ll be a better Sting than the one who has been just sucking up for so long.

Notes: Rude really worked the crowd into a frenzy here, and Okerlund enjoyed the freedom to be unscripted.

Rating: B

Hollywood Hogan is in the ring alongside Bubba Rogers and The Giant, and Hogan says that Rogers is the senior man in the ring in tonight’s main event alongside his “main man” California Kip. But he mostly talks about The Giant, saying that tonight is his first official match in World Championship Wrestling, and any man who thinks he can be Jack and slay his Giant has another thing coming, jack!

Notes: Hogan improvised well here.

Rating: C+

Just a little over 90 seconds is all it takes for The Giant to decimate Jumpin’ Joey Maggs here.

Match Length: 1:43

Rating: E-

“Mean” Gene hosts an event report, cutting to several interviews. First Diamond Dallas Page, who talks about the Stud Stable; BG Armstrong and Terry Gordy, who say that DDP won’t even need to get back in the ring with Waylon because he has BG on Main Event; Syxx and Rey Mysterio Jr. both separately talk about their upcoming matchup at Slamboree; Alex Wright talks about defending his TV title on Main Event; and Disco Inferno is excited for the Legend’s Reunion because those people know how to dance!

Rating: C

Disco in mind, he’s shown dancing backstage when partner Sgt. “Pitbull” Pittman walks in and starts berating him. He tries to tell Disco to get serious, when the Hillbilly Cousins come in. They tell Pittman to lighten up, and add to Disco’s disco dancing by holding an impromptu hoe down right there on the spot! Pittman shakes his head and is ready to leave, and he runs into the Harlem Heat! Booker and Stevie look over the situation and say that ain’t none of these fruit booties know good dancin’! Yeah, it’s a total comedy segment, wanna fight about it?

Rating: C-

Cactus Jack is backstage with Jesse “The Body” Ventura, who is interviewing him regarding his big match at Slamboree against Scott Hall. Jesse asks Cactus about what happened last week, which is also the reason Randy Savage wasn’t here this week. Jack says that he has no idea what is going on in Hall’s mind, but he knows what will be in his mind tomorrow night – Jack’s fist! Cactus says that Hall will pay for what happened to Terry Funk, and Cactus will be the man to do it firsthand. But Jesse cries out in surprise, when Hall actually shows up and attacks Jack from behind! Scott assaults Cactus with an aluminum trash can, before slamming him into a locker as Ventura keeps telling him to get out of here! Hall stomps on Jack a few times before leaving, after throwing a toothpick on his fallen enemy.

Notes: Jesse improvised very well here.

Rating: B

The Wonderful Destruction Crew of Paul Orndorff and Meng may not be considered the “top line” for the KoW, but even without Dusty Rhodes in their corner anymore they still are just as dangerous. They prove this here as they take on Rick and Scott Steiner, and both teams jockey for a victory that could bring them closer to a tag team title match. The ending comes from the outside however, as Ric Flair and Arn Anderson interrupt and attack the Steiners, working to get an early advantage before facing the brothers at Slamboree! Scott gets rolled back into the ring, into the waiting arms of a Wonderful spike piledriver to give Paul and Meng the surprising victory!

Match Length: 14:18

Rating: B

The WDC leave as the bell sounds, but Owen Hart and Eddy Guerrero decide to join in the beatdown, trying to take out the Steiners! But Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham rush the ring, and a huge brawl breaks out! All eight men are a flurry of flying limbs, and officials and security all come out to try and regain order as we head to a commercial, with the promise of a huge announcement when we return!

The Road Warriors get a little tougher matchup than they anticipated from the experienced Bubba Rogers and the athletic California Kip, but the ending isn’t in much doubt as Animal pins Kip following the Doomsday Device.

Match Length: 12:26

Rating: B

The match turns out to have been a diversion altogether, as The Giant hits the ring and starts dismantling Hawk and Animal! Hollywood Hogan comes to ringside and nods his head, laughing at the Chicago natives as the big Warriors gets planted with violent chokeslams! WCW Saturday Night goes off the air with The Giant surprisingly standing tall over two of the most established names in professional wrestling!

Rating: C+

Writer's Note: I hope everyone likes the new look of WCW Saturday Night, because I really enjoyed it!!! I only had the show booked this morning, and I'm posting it already, rather than it taking a week to write it? Yes Yes Yes! Never fear, however, because fan signs will still be a big part of PPVs.

And speaking of PPVs.....

Lex Luger and the Road Warriors vs. The Kings of Wrestling (Hollywood Hogan, Randy Savage, and Roddy Piper)

Comments: The Lex Express gains a point on the feud with the KoW.

Dustin Rhodes vs. Owen Hart

Comments: Owen can be a huge star. Dustin can too, but he can always get a win later.

The Steiner Brothers vs. Ric Flair and Arn Anderson

Comments: Of all the Horsemen matches, the most predictable.

Brian Pillman vs. Eddy Guerrero

Comments: If Eddie is winning, he is doing it by DQ after Pillman goes crazy. But I'm going with Pillman getting built up towards his feud with Bischoff.

Cactus Jack vs. Scott Hall

Comments: Very unpredictable.

Marty Jannetty vs. Ultimo Dragon

Comments: It is his first PPV defense, so Marty gives him the rub here.

Rey Mysterio Jr. vs. Syxx

Comments: Rey is the babyface here, and he faces the heel Ultimo at the next PPV outing.

WCW Main Event matches

Alex Wright vs. Lord Steven Regal

Diamond Dallas Page vs. BG Armstrong

The Hillbilly Cousins vs. The Heavenly Bodies

Fun Fan Signs: All Hail King Smash!
