ProWrestlingNews.net - 1997 And Onwards!

OOC Note:
This is a watcher diary based on NWAvsWWF's 1997 mod. I've made some changes, like making WWF Raw into a two hour show, just so that they can compete with WCW on an even battle ground, and it wasn't too long until the show went to two hours anyway. I hope you enjoy the format, I really want it to feel as much as possible as if you're reading a news website, and I hope that comes across well. Thank you for reading, and feel free to leave comments, ask questions about workers, companies, etc.

Monday Night Raw Expansion

Monday, Week 1, January 1997

This morning in the PWN.net offices we were informed that World Wrestling Federation Chairman Mr. Vince McMahon was today announcing his plans to make Monday Night Raw into a two hour show, as to compete with rival show WCW Monday Nitro. McMahon announced that as from tonight's edition of Raw, the show will be going two hours, meaning there will be even more action from the likes of Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart, Steve Austin and The Undertaker.

"The idea of taking Raw to two hours isn't just to compete with WCW," Vince McMahon stated in the press conference, "it's also to give the loyal WWF fans more bang for the buck! The more they get to see of our Superstars, the happier I'm sure they will be."

There has been no response from World Championship Wrestling on this news, although the general feeling is that they are currently so far ahead in the war, that they probably don't feel threatened at all.

Hollywood Hogan In The Money

Monday, Week 1, January 1997

World Championship Wrestling's current World Heavyweight Champion, "Hollywood" Hulk Hogan, appeared on the financial show
Cashing Inp
last night, albiet only briefly. The feature was on the highest paid sports stars in the United States, and Hogan was there representing the world of pro wrestling. Earning a whooping $83,418 a month, the wrestling mega star is believed to be the highest earner in the business. Hogan has earned a lot of praise for his appearence, bigging up what the boys do in the ring, and saying that those who can earn the "top dollar" truly deserve too.

"Brother, when you're selling out arena's week in and week out, when you're pulling in the TV ratings and the Pay-Per-View buyrates, then when someone offers you a lot of money to do it all, you take it," Hogan told host Aiden McNiel, "the boys in WCW work hard every night to ensure that the fans go home happy, and they deserve the pay that they recieve."

The Monday Night War

Tuesday, Week 1, January 1997

It could be argued that WWF have made a move in the right direction with going to two hours for Raw. Last night's show was one of the best that the company have put on for a very long time, and despite still trailing behind WCW in the ratings war, everyone involved should have come away feeling very pleased with themselves. In the main event of WWF Raw we saw Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels fight to an epic no contest, as well as seeing The Undertaker and Mankind step into the ring with each other. Over on TNT and we had The Giant and Booker T taking on Diamond Dallas Page and Stevie Ray in the main event. It looks like WCW may be going with a "brother vs brother" angle for Harlem Heat, although with how sometimes they book their shows, they could be teaming with each other again next week. WCW Nitro drew a 3.65 on TNT, while WWF Raw drew a 1.98 on the USA Network. Anyway, as always, full results are below.

BCW Releases

Tuesday, Week 1, January 1997

Industry sources have informed us that Border City Wrestling are in the process of cutting back on their wage bill, and obviously means the unfortunate case of workers being released. Today we can inform you that Johnny Paradise, Breyer Wellington and Skull Ganz have all been released. Johnny Paradise is a former BCW Can-Am Tag Team Champion, having held the title with Scott Summers from June 1994 to January 1995, while Skull Ganz only graduated from the Can-Am Wrestling School last year. We are aware that BCW have told the workers that should business pick up at some point in the near future there is a possibility of them being offered new contracts, but until then they will be looking for work else where. We were lucky enough to get an exclusive chat with Johnny Paradise, with the highlights shown below.

"It is gutting," Paradise said, on being released by BCW. "I held the Tag Team titles there for over six months a few years back, so it's always gutting when something like this happens. Will I remain in Canada, though? I don't think so. I think it's time for me head home back to the States and try and get some work there. I'll be in contact with my agent, and hopefully I can get a try out match with either the WWF or WCW. Who knows what the future holds?"

Interesting. Count me in.

Are you controlling any company or are you just focusing on the Monday Night Wars? Or just the wrestling world in general?

I'm not controlling anyone, just letting the AI call the shots. I'll be concentrating mostly on the Monday Night Wars as thats what I know most about, but the entire game world will be covered.

Last Night's Results; Steve Doll Injured

Thursday, Week 1, January 1997

In some unfortunate news, Steve Doll was injured on the pre-show card of last night's AJPW Mighty Defence show. The four time USWA Tag Team Champion is said to be sidelined for around two months. AJPW put on by far the best show last night, but obviously the focus was on WCW's TV taping of Saturday Night. Main eventing Saturday Night was the team of Hugh Morrus and Greg "The Hammer" Valentine taking on Scott Norton and "Squire" David Taylor, in what is being described as a very less than spectacular event. Well, anyway, as always, results are below.

Mass Releases Across The Globe!

Friday, Week 1, January 1997

It may not be the best time to be a professional wrestler, as FMW in Japan and WWC in Puerto Rico both made releases from their rosters last night. To start WWC released El Nene, Shane Sewell and Ken Wayne. Sewell held the WWC World Tag Team Championships with Sean Morley in 1995, and Wayne held the WWC World Junior Heavyweight Championship at the same time, however it seems that they are no longer needed by WWC, and find themselves unemployed.

Over in Japan and FMW released an amazing eight workers last night, the list includes Koji Nakagawa, Hideki Hosaka, Combat Toyoda, Horace Hogan, Shark Tsuchiya, Jason The Terrible, Hayato Nanjyo and Gosaku Goshogawara. We managed to get in contact with Horace Hogan, the nephew of WCW World Heavyweight Champion Hollywood Hogan, who told us that he was on his way back to the United States, and was hoping to talk to his uncle about getting some work with World Championship Wrestling. We will have more on that when and if news comes in.
