WWF 1997: The War Never Ends

Recommended Posts

This is the World Wrestling Federation. Our story is not pretty. We were on the top of the world once. The world of Professional Wrestling. We had the best that this world had to offer. We had Hulkamania, Macho Madness, The Dirtiest Players in the game, a Giant, we simply had THE names. And it seemed that...nothing could stop us. That was...until these two men came.

These are Ted Turner and Eric Bischoff. Turner has big money, perhaps more than WWF ever had, even in the golden days. Turner simply thinks that he needs to have everything. And this included taking WWF's place on the top of the Professional Wrestling world. He failed, failed and failed for some time, and it seemed that he couldn't do it. But then came Eric Bischoff. The Former announcer didn't look like a threat for the WWF, but he was the one. He took Hogan from us. He took Savage from us. He took Diesel from us. He took Ramon from us. He did what we didn't do...the Clash Of The Titans, back in 1994. And this just ****'d us up, and we lost the first place. It just seemed that...a trophy had just slipped out from our hands, everything that we accomplished had slipped from our hands.

So...want to know exactly WHAT is the #1 now?

This is WCW. World Championship Wrestling. Or, even better, World Championsh** Wrestling. Once called the loser, now it's in our place. Some time ago, they started a New World Order, and this even worsened our situation. Even more wrestlers jumped ship and are jumping ship to WCW, attendances fell and are still falling, and it just seems that...we are going to fall off the map. But...there is STILL a solution. And we don't need Hulk Hogan or Ric Flair to do this.

We just need men like these. Shawn Michaels, who is our top player right now, and our WWF World Champion. Bret 'The Hitman' Hart, who won our Royal Rumble Match this year. The Undertaker, who has one of the best characters in the industry today, and it's one of the top wrestlers in the industry today as well. 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin, who has a VERY bright future in the federation, after Bischoff just dumped him out from that piece of sh**. And The Man They Call Vader, who was a big (both literally and figuratively) star in Japan and WCW itself. We just need men like these, stars of the present and future, to present the best experience ever for the Professional Wrestling fans. We just need men like these, that are not afraid of cutting violent promos in the front of the fans, to present the most radical product that we ever had. We just need men like these, that are full of attitudes, to do exactly this, bring in the Attitude Era. We just need men like these, that are not afraid of entering a war...to...

February 1st, 1997: Raw is War

Dark Match: Billy Gunn defeated Aldo Montoya in 5:38 with a Gunn Slinger. (D+)

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/TripleH31_zpsa02976ca.jpg

As we were going to start with a match to decide the #1 Contender for the Intercontinental Championship, Hunter Hearst Helmsley came down to ringside to provide guest commentary. As he sat in with JR, McMahon and Lawler, he made no secret that he had little to no respect for the men in the match. Helmsley insulted both of them during their entrances like if they were nothing.

Helmsley: ''You know? I don't give a damn about anyone who steps up to challenge me. Because all of them don't have the Blue Blood of Hunter Hearst Helmsley. And at Final Four, it will be no different. As soon as i get tired of this belt here, i'm going right after the Federation's World Championship. Now, let's start this freak show.''

Grade: B-

Intercontinental Championship #1 Contender Match:

Goldust (w/Marlena) vs The Executioner (w/Paul Bearer)

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/Goldust2_zpscc256f73.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/Marlena_zpsf53d178d.jpg vs http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/TheExecutioner_zpsb75072e9.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/PaulBearer1_zpsd300858f.jpg

Goldust wasn't at his best after losing to Helmsley at the Royal Rumble, but he knew that he would have another chance at the gold if he could beat The Executioner. Executioner took his time during all of the match, using his freakish power to take Goldust off his feet in the early going. Paul Bearer was a major factor in all of the match, hitting Goldust with the urn on the back of his neck when the referee wasn't looking. The Executioner seemed unstoppable, and it looked like he was getting his ticket to Final Four. But Goldust was determinated, and used some dirty tricks out of the bag to take the monster down. Bearer knew that his client was in trouble, and entered the ring with the urn as the referee was knocked out, and went after Goldust with it, but the latter ducked from the shot, that ultimately hit Executioner. Goldust then threw Bearer out of the ring, climbed to the top turnbuckle and jumped on a dazed Executioner with a Bulldog to earn himself another shot at the Intercontinental gold.

Winner: Goldust

Grade: C+

Goldust earned a Intercontinental Championship match at Final Four: In Your House.

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/Goldust2_zpscc256f73.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/Marlena_zpsf53d178d.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/TripleH31_zpsa02976ca.jpg

After the match, Goldust didn't want to celebrate. He sent Marlena to the backstage, and went right to ringside, where Helmsley was insulting him. Goldust took a look at the belt that was on Helmsley's arms, and punched the table right away, trying to intimidate Hunter. Helmsley got up, and opened a big and sarcastic grin on his face. Goldust did nothing as Helmsley escaped, and just made a sign that he was going to win the belt at Final Four.

In a backstage promo, 'Stone Cold' Steve Austin talked about the big Four-Way Match at Final Four against Undertaker, Vader and Owen Hart for a future World Championship Match. He said that he knew that he wouldn't face smart men when he qualified for the bout, but he wasn't expecting three animals like his opponents. He said that this would give him a clear advantage in the Pay-Per-View, and with the guaranteed World Title Match, things were even better for him. He also took a shot at Bret Hart, who eliminated him in the Rumble Match and also won it.

Austin: ''When i defeated that crazy Brian Pillman, i thought i couldn't face more stupid men. But i was wrong. At Final Four, i'm facing a man that killed his own family, a man that would eat his own crap because he clearly has no mind, and a kid that would sell his mother to get another match with his brother, and can't admit that lives under the shadow of him. These three are clearly going to destroy themselves because they just think about the title match, but i'm going to be even better, sons. Because, unlike them, i take my time and capitalize on the opportunities. I don't go right away spearing, punching and kicking my opponents because i'm desperate. And as for Bret Hart, you won the battle at the Royal Rumble, but don't go and think that this is over. As soon as you're getting your opportunity against Michaels and losing, i'm getting my own, and winning, son. And this is just the icing of the cake, because i'm going to love seeing your stupid face of failure, when this is all said and done.''

Grade: A

Owen Hart and British Bulldog vs The Godwinns (w/Hillbilly Jim)

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/OwenHart2_zps49c5578b.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/BritishBulldog4_zps4dd80f58.jpg vs http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/HenryGodwinn1_zpsc21c246e.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/PhineasGodwinn1_zpseaa4f3d3.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/HillbillyJim2_zpsfb032813.jpg

Owen was very focused after winning the Final Four Qualifying Match, and this helped him and the Bulldog in this match. Henry and Phineas gave the champions a formidable challenge, forcing them to go back on defense. But the Bulldog's power got the best out of them, when he started tossing the heavy Henry around the ring like if he was nothing. Owen and Phineas quickly became the legal men after this, and Phineas slowed Owen a little bit with a big knee, but the momentum of the Tag Team Champion soon got the best out of P.I.G., and a Sharpshooter from out of nowhere was enough for Phineas to tap out.

Winners: Owen Hart and British Bulldog

Grade: B

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/Vader7_zps0bdf6951.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/PaulBearer1_zpsd300858f.jpg

Paul Bearer and Vader came to the ring to challenge Vader's rival and Bearer's son, The Undertaker. Bearer delivered some words while Vader just stood by his side, awaiting for The Deadman to come.

Bearer: ''OOOOOOOH, my Undertaker, you are going to face Vader at Final Four, and i caaaaaaaaan't wait for him to destroy you, son! But he said that he wanted you right here, right now, so he could just soften you up! So, my Undertaker, why don't you come here and join your father and your big friend so we can play before the playground?''

Then, the lights went off, and every fan in the arena went crazy.

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/TheUndertaker12_zpsb01159d5.jpg

The Undertaker then appeared in the stage as the lights went on, and he didn't take his time to answer the challenge.

Undertaker: ''Father, you know that i can do unimaginable things with anyone that you or anyone else throws at me, so i would normally say that this was a waste of time for you and for your victim. But, Vader wanted my attention, and he got it. He defeated me back in the Royal Rumble, and so, i'm just accepting this challenge because i'm simply not done with him. But, this is not going to be tonight, or next week. But i accept a match against him at the Raw before Final Four, and in a No DQ match, so we can do what we want to do with each other.''

Bearer asked Vader if he was keen with the idea, and The Man From The Rocky Mountains made a positive sign with his head.

Bearer: ''So, if this is fine with Vader, it's fine with me too. In two weeks, he's going to take another rock out of his path, OOOOOOOH YEEEEESSSS!''

The lights then went off again, and when they went on, The Undertaker wasn't in the stage anymore. However, Vader continued in the ring for his match, as Bearer opened a big grin as he was leaving the ring.

Grade: B+

Doug Furnas vs Vader (w/Paul Bearer)

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/DougFurnas31_zpsaa81090c.jpg vs http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/Vader7_zps0bdf6951.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/PaulBearer1_zpsd300858f.jpg

Doug Furnas is best known in the Federation as one half of the Can-Am Express, where he found some little success. On his own, outside of the ring, he was a former powerlifter, which could have helped him on this match, as he was without LaFon, and facing a huge man. But, his past didn't help him, and his willing to go on to a singles run in the WWF didn't help him too. Vader simply dominated Furnas from start to finish, and just finished him off with a Vader Bomb for the win.

Winner: Vader

Grade: B

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/ShawnMichaels16_zps4955120b.jpg

Backstage, Shawn Michaels delivered a quick promo about his willing to defend the title against the winner of the Final Four Match if he was the champion when the winner would cash-in his shot, unlike Hunter Hearst Helmsley. But, he didn't talk about defending against his WrestleMania opponent, Bret Hart, which was confusing for some fans.

Michaels: ''I just wish good luck for the four men at Final Four. I'm going to face whoever wins with no fear, if i am still the champion by the time of the match, even if it is a monster or a supernatural freak. I'm going to try my possible to stay with the belt for my fans, as competition is very heavy right now. But, i have to warn them, i'm not an easy opponent too, so you guys need to put on the fight of your lives, as you face the Heartbreak Kid on the big stage!''

Grade: A

Bret Hart vs Faarooq

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/BretHart91_zps77d6e3aa.jpg vs http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/RonSimmons41_zps52fcf009.jpg

The leader of the Nation of Domination wasn't so dominant here. After his loss to Ahmed Johnson at the Royal Rumble, Faarooq was not on a good mood, and was willing to make anything to turn the tables on his momentum. But Bret's own momentum was very high, after he won the Rumble Match himself, after eliminating rival Steve Austin. Both men gave the best fight that they could for the fans, as they didn't want to lose on the Main Event too. Without the help of his cronies, Faarooq needed to regroup. He did just that, throwing stiff shots against The Hitman. But once again the momentum came into play on this show, as Bret took Faarooq down and hit a Sharpshooter, that made Faarooq tap out after a intense battle, and the show ended with The Hitman having his hand raised once again.

Winner: Bret Hart

Grade: B

Overall Grade: B

Glad to see a new diary from this era. Just curious though-did u redo the RUmble in your game and make Bret the winner? I remember watching this stuff happen as a middle schooler and enjoying the product but not even realizing what some of this stuff was leading to...Austin won the Rumble after cheating and the doube turn w Bret at WM, HBK losing his "smile" and giving up the belt...only for Sid of all ppl to win it again and defend at WM. Looks like that won't be the case in this diary and excited to see how it plays out

I'm following. I'm interested to see if you find a way to keep Vader relevant. He's always been one of my favorite monsters, but kinda faded out after this year when he was part of Team USA at Survivor Series.

Good show thus far man!

So, these two shows were posted very fast because i was deciding in which way i would be posting. And it's going to be in this very format, inspired by TFC's great Golden Age dynasty, as i have his permission to use the format. And now, i'm going to start a prediction contest for A Shows and Pay-Per-Views, which are going to be separate contests. The prizes are going to be different for each one. So now, let's start with the predictions for Raw is War, that may be up on Friday.

February 8th and February 10th, 1997: Raw and Superstars

Dark Match: Jesse James defeated Leif Cassidy at 6:16 with a Shake, Rattle and Roll. (D+)

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/HowardFinkel1_zps0368df59.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/BrianPillman2_zps73d40fa4.jpg

Before the show could really start, Howard Finkel informed the viewers that Brian Pillman is suffering big psychological problems after losing to Steve Austin in a Final Four Qualifying Match two weeks ago. Finkel didn't say what exactly the problems were, to respect Pillman, but said that Pillman would stay in a treatment paid by the WWF for a unknown amount of time, and asked for the fans to pray for Pillman.

Finkel: ''Ladies and Gentlemen, it's very sad for me to announce that Mr. Brian Pillman is going through several psychological problems for two weeks now, and he's going to miss some time in the WWF's action. Please, ladies and gentlemen, pray for Mr. Pillman so nothing worse happens to him, as the WWF is going to pay for a special treatment for Mr. Pillman's problems. Thanks for your attention, ladies and gentlemen.''

''Wildman'' Marc Mero & Rocky Maivia (w/Sable) vs The Headbangers

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/MarcMero1_zps08af99b3.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/TheRock9_zps788b73a7.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/Sable3_zps3996002f.jpg vs http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/Mosh2_zpsb5c32b0c.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/Thrasher2_zps446cca9f.jpg

Both Mero and Maivia are hungry challengers in the federation, and they simply proved this on this match. Both of them kicked out of brutal double team moves of Mosh and Thrasher, while Sable also granted them some advantage during the match, distracting the referee and the Headbangers themselves. Mosh then hit a Mosh Pit on Mero, and tagged in Thrasher, who just had to pin Mero. But Sable proved to be a major part of the match, getting on the apron and distracting Thrasher with some ''poses''. This gave Mero time to tag in Rocky, who just jacked Thrasher with a Dropkick and a Roll-up for the win.

Winners: ''Wildman'' Marc Mero & Rocky Maivia

Ahmed Johnson vs Billy Gunn

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/AhmedJohnson2_zps62ec15ae.jpg vs http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/MontySopp2_zpscc902775.jpg

Both Ahmed and Billy are on intense rivalries with Faarooq and Bart Gunn, respectively, going into Final Four, and both Ahmed and Billy had a intense brawl here. Neither man was looking forward to losing momentum in the last month before WrestleMania, and this was shown during the entire match. As Ahmed hit a big Spear on Billy, he didn't have time to do anything else, as these men interfered...

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/RonSimmons41_zps52fcf009.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/BrianAdams3_zpsbda8e84b.jpg

Faarooq ran into the ring, with a figure rarely seen on Raw's Main Card during some time right after him, the man known as Crush. Both men attacked Ahmed with pure fury, as the latter fell slowly to the canvas. Billy soon joined the fray too, but for him, the party was about to get even bigger too...

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/BartGunn1_zps241e8774.jpg

Billy's brother, Bart Gunn, also ran into the ring, and went right after Billy. However, Billy saw Bart coming, and quickly escaped the ring, unlike Ahmed. As this happened, the referee woke up from a accidental shot that Ahmed had hit earlier in the match, and as he woke up, he had already lost control of the match, so it was declared a No Contest.

Winner: No Contest

Grade: C

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/AhmedJohnson2_zps62ec15ae.jpg http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/RonSimmons41_zps52fcf009.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/BrianAdams3_zpsbda8e84b.jpg

After the match, Billy and Bart were gone, but Ahmed, Crush and Faarooq were still in the ring. By the orders of Faarooq, Crush hit a brutal Big Boot on a dazed Ahmed, and Faarooq himself hit a Blackout on Ahmed. Crush then stood like a rock by the side of a fallen Ahmed, as Faarooq cackled and officials entered the ring to restore order. Faarooq didn't wait a second to leave the ring with Crush when this happened, still cackling as he left with Crush, and the crowd was shocked with the events that had just transpired in the ring.

Grade: C-

Hunter Hearst Helmsley vs Blackjack Windham (w/Blackjack Bradshaw)

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/TripleH31_zpsa02976ca.jpg vs http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/BlackjackWindham2_zpsa984e640.jpghttp://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/BlackjackBradshaw2_zpsf65a70e6.jpg

The New Blackjacks never backed down from a fight, and Windham wasn't going to dishonor this, and was looking forward to a big fight with the Intercontinental Champion. But Helmsley was not a bit interested in facing his opponent physically, instead, wanted to play some mind games with him. Helmsley quickly slipped out from the ring as the match started, and did his best to stay away from Windham, but Bradshaw stopped him. Helmsley got the upper hand against Bradshaw, but as Windham got his hands on him thanks to Bradshaw, Helmsley suffered serious punishment. Windham hit various slams on Helmsley, and for a moment, it seemed that Windham would go on to get the big win. But Helmsley's mind games proved to be stronger than anything that The Blackjacks could offer against Helmsley, as he hit a Low Blow on Windham from out of nowhere. But, before he could get away with this...

Goldust ran into the ring for the save, jumping on Helmsley with a takedown and hitting big punches, leaving the referee no choice but to give the DQ win to Helmsley.

After the match, the brawl between the Final Four opponents continued, until Helmsley ducked from a punch and rolled to the outside. As Goldust confronted his rival, The Blackjacks returned to the ring, and for a minute, the fans thought that chaos was going to reign supreme in the ring, leaving Helmsley with a big grin in the outside. But the grin soon became a dismay, as Goldust shook hands with both the Blackjacks in the ring. Helmsley then continued his path to the backstage, refusing to look back at the ''disgusting'' scene.

Mankind vs Savio Vega

After being out of action since the Royal Rumble, Mankind was hungry for a victory on his return to Raw is War. However, the Puerto-Rican Superstar, Savio Vega, wasn't looking to give the win for 'Kind so easily. He mixed brawling and high-flying skills to create a type of offense that even Mankind didn't take before. But Mankind's own crazy offense proved to be too much for Savio, and 'Kind hit a Double Arm DDT on Savio after a hard-fought battle for the win.

Winner: Mankind

British Bulldog vs Jerry ''The King'' Lawler

http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/BritishBulldog4_zps4dd80f58.jpg vs http://i1313.photobucket.com/albums/t548/Smasher1311/JerryLawler6_zpsd0fcb91d.jpg

For the first time in weeks, Raw is War had two back-to-back matches. Leaving the ringside for the match, Lawler may not be that Lawler that he was five years ago, but he can still fight against anyone in the WWF, and he showed this quite well as he fought the strong Tag Team Champion, British Bulldog. Lawler did not hesitate in using some dirty tricks too, taking a Eye Poke or two out of the bag when the referee was not looking. But the Tag Team Champion used his unbelievable power and determination to take The King ''off his throne'' when the latter tried to capitalize on the dirty tricks, with the apex being when he grabbed The King's arm when he tried a Low Blow, and hit a Running Powerslam for the pinfall.

Winner: British Bulldog

Like advertised in the last Superstars and earlier in this show, Sycho Sid came to the ring, and called out the current World Heavyweight Champion and the man that took the same belt from him, Shawn Michaels. Shawn took no time in walking down to the ring, and Sid immediately demanded a rematch against The Heartbreak Kid. Michaels quickly accepted the challenge, saying that he had no problem in giving Sid his rematch clause and finally taking him out of the contenders picture. Sid replied, saying that it was Michaels who was going to be taken out from a picture at Final Four. And this picture wasn't just the championship picture, but also the wrestling picture, as he promised to end Michaels' career as a payback for blatantly cheating at the Royal Rumble. Michaels said that, if Sid wanted to destroy him so much, he had no problem in adding a little stipulation for their match, in which both of them would be locked inside a Steel Cage, and there would be no pinfalls and no submissions, the only way to win was to escape the cage. Sid agreed with the Steel Cage stipulation proposed by Michaels, and said that he (Michaels) would be locked inside hell with him (Sid) at Final Four, and Sid would escape hell as the World Champion.

So...Raw was very predictable, as everybody got the same good grade, 4. But nobody saw the No Contest between Johnson and Gunn, so nobody is winning the A Show contest by now. This Raw will be the last one before Final Four, and after Final Four, i'm going to start writing some more backstories.

Bearer did not interfere during the majority of the match, as he wanted Vader to punish The Undertaker. And punish The Undertaker he did during this match. Vader would spear The Deadman right into the barricade twice in the match, but somehow the barricade didn't break. Taker would deliver a big message to Vader and Bearer too, as he chokeslammed the behemoth right in the Spanish announce table, but this one did break. In the final minutes of the match, both men were exhausted, but they weren't keen on the idea of losing. The Undertaker hit a Big Boot and went for the Chokeslam on Vader, but Bearer jacked The Deadman with the urn. The urn shot had no effect on Taker, but a opportunistic clothesline to the back of the neck by Vader had a big effect, as it was followed by a Vader Bomb, and Bearer cackled as Taker was down for the count. Steel Cage match for the WWF World Championship

Shawn Michaels vs Sycho Sid

The rematch at WM13 will be a huge draw.

Fatal-4-Way Elimination match for a future World Championship match

Vader (w/Paul Bearer) vs The Undertaker vs Steve Austin vs Owen Hart

Austin can get the ball rolling more on his feud with Bret by taking the win here. Perhaps even cashing the match in to make it a triple threat at WM?

WWF Intercontinental Championship Match

Hunter Hearst Helmsley vs Goldust (w/Marlena)

3H keeps his roll going.

Bret Hart vs Mankind (w/Paul Bearer)

Should be a fun match, but Bret stays on top for Mania.

Billy Gunn vs Bart Gunn

Billy has a potential as a future star, to some degree.

If Ahmed Johnson wins, he gets a match with Faarooq at WrestleMania

Ahmed Johnson vs Crush (w/Faarooq)

Seems pretty straightforward.

Vader (w/Paul Bearer) - <em>I see Austin getting the win, but I wanted to go against the grain and I'm a big Vader guy.</em></p><p>

Hunter Hearst Helmsley - <em>Keep the belt on him a little longer. Goldust isn't the guy.</em></p><p>

Bret Hart - <em>His match against Austin should be great.</em></p><p>

Billy Gunn - <em>Easy.</em></p><p>

Ahmed Johnson - <em>He should easily go over Crush at this point.</em></p>

So, thanks to everyone that has already predicted to Final Four, the show is booked and written, but i'm going to wait a little more, so, Final Four will be up (very) later today, or tomorrow when i come back from school. So, if anyone else wants to predict, it is welcomed. And i have to say, the show is going to have some surprises. But i'm not telling them obviously. And i'm going to post the last Raw is War's prediction results with Final Four too.
