AAA: Where Angels Tread

I'm still not quite sure how to process the fact that my Aunt Anne had invited me out to see one of her shows. She called it a graduation present. Which would have made sense had we had a discussion with one another in the past seven years. I didn't even know my aunt knew I went to college.

 

Well she wasn't really my aunt. At least not as far as dinner table conversation was concerned. See aunt Anne married my uncle Frank. And they were happy together I think. At least up until Frank's first heart attack. Mom never forgave Anne for not dropping everything to take care of Frank. Their relationship turned so tumultuous that the pair hadn't been photographed in a room together for twenty three years. And in a business where all eyes are on you, I doubt that's great publicity.

 

And just like that the premier women's tag team of the eighties became an annotation of an earlier time. I'm sure there are other more intricate details that could fill whatever dvd of the week they eventually plan on making on the two of them. My oversimplification aside, their feud has always been a simple unspoken family matter. Everyone understood, but no one ever said anything. I don't think I've even heard Anne's name mentioned since the night Frank died seven years ago. I did get a horrible move to vegas as my mom pursued a job opportunity of the lowest common denominator.

 

So here I am on a bus headed to the middle of nowhere, Montana. To see a woman who never even bothered to ask what I had even studied in school in the first place. Little hint, it wasn't wrestling. Although AAA would be a step up from the last wrestling ring I ever laid my eyes on. Not that I hold anything against those guys, half my college experience was paid for by that strip club. The other half my gymnastics scholarship.

 

Sure it was the family business, I had even picked up a few things here and there growing up. Competed back in high school. And if you think it's a niche market when the results are scripted, you haven't seen a niche market until you they day see an empty stadium for a state championship. Okay, that's enough getting all reminiscy. I was definitely going to regret this.

OOC: So this is my first diary. I've been wanting to do one for quite a while. Finally deciding to take the plunge and dive write in. I can't guarantee how entertaining of a read this will be. But had to give it a go eventually.

VERY promising start. I like the concept. Especially since Anne is known for being a "stick in the mud" type owner, unwilling to change with the times and take a risk at expansion.

Yes sirree. Kate is in fact Marilyn's daughter for this. On a related note that will most likely not pop up, other than perhaps an off-hand mention, I also made Jack Anne's son.

I wasn't really surprised that no one was waiting for me at the bus stop. Despite the personal invitation it wasn't as if I was some sort of vip guest to the show. What did catch me off guard was that the gym was a good three miles from the only nearby bus stop. It's a university campus for God's sake, what if someone was running late?</p><p> </p><p>

What did surprise me was how I hadn't made it three feet before I saw my aunt Anne deep in a sales pitch with a familiar face. She was talking to Tamara McFly. Tamara whom had been quite adamant in the past that she wanted nothing to with AAA. Judging by how it looked the conversation was going that hadn't changed.</p><p> </p><p>

Aunt Anne flashed me the most sincerely rehearsed smile I had ever seen before waving me over. <span style="color:#4B0082;">"Oh, hey Katey!"</span> No one calls me Katey. <span style="color:#4B0082;"> "It's good to see my favorite niece looking so well. I do believe you know Miss McFly over here. I was just trying to convince her to make the right choice for her career and start wrestling with my girls."</span> Anne nudged her head in Tamara's direction.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#8B0000;">"Uh, hi Tam."</span> It as all that I could managed to utter after being blindsided by the surprise meet and greet.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#FF8C00;">"Little Red. It's good to see you. Heard you got your BA in creative writing up in Toronto. I'm sure your mom is so proud."</span> I could swear for a second I saw Anne glare at the mention of my mom. If Tamara saw it she didn't say anything to acknowledged it. </p><p> </p><p>

Before I could answer, Anne had elected herself my mouthpiece interrupting with her own input to the congratulations. <span style="color:#4B0082;">"We're all proud of her. In fact, I was hoping she would use that fancy degree and join the family business. I'm getting a bit along in age and can't devote myself to booking my shows. Who better to take over than family? Oh, but there is one problem I might not have the time to teach her the ropes. And the more experienced workers might feel a bit resentful having to work with someone so green. It would be lovely if she had an old acquaintance in the business to take her under their wing Miss McFly."</span> Aunt Anne made no notion to hide her intentions. A sinking feeling hitting my stomach as it dawned on me. I might as well not even be in the room at this point, I served whatever purpose she wanted for me in wrangling her big fish.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#8B0000;">"Whoa I don't think I'm the the right person. All this hasn't exactly been my scene in years. Besides I wouldn't even know where to begin."</span></p><p> </p><p>

<span style="color:#4B0082;">"You two don't have to answer right now. In fact, take some time the show starts in an hour. Once you see the tremendous amount of talent you'll be working with I am quite positive the right decision will become clear.</span>" Quickly scurrying off, Anne would not give us the opportunity to protest.</p><p> </p><p>

It was Tamara who broke the silence once Anne was out of earshot. Letting go of whatever she had been biting back the entire time. <span style="color:#FF8C00;">"I didn't expect her to be willing to use her own niece as pawn just so she could get her way. Willing to even risk burning her company for it. Not that I think you will end up razing this place to the ground. She's been doing a good enough job at it for years. She really is every bit the control freak they say eh. You do know you don't have to take the job right?"</span></p><p> </p><p>

I didn't have an answer. Not for Tamara, and not for Anne. Not yet at least. Luckily, I had a long show to mull it over.</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Joanne Rodriquez</strong> vs. Paige Croft <strong>C</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Very few people gave Paige Croft a fighting chance going into this match. Which may just be why. In an evenly contested opener both J-Ro and Croft put on a technical exhibition as they tore up the mat with some furious chain wrestling. On their feet they took no prisoners with equally devastating fast-paced brawling. Croft was eventually caught unaware by a flash dropkick setting it up for J-Ro to deliver the J-Rocker for the win.</em></p><p><em>

<em>In an average bout Debbie Rose made pretty decisive work of Jana Marie Bowen. Both Angels showed their range as the bout had a healthy amount of aerial work to match the groundwork. The sleeper hold was locked in tight and Bowen had no choice but to tap.</em></p><p><em>

<em>In a pretty uninspiring squash mash. Suzue Katayama completely dominated Christy Higgins. It took no less than five minutes before the referee had to call the match to a close ruling Higgins no longer able to compete due to the brutality of Katayama's assault. Generic squash nothing worth noting.</em></p><p><em>

<em>The gong of the bell did nothing to soothe the savage beast who would continue to attack Higgins. A large number of of officials stormed the ring hoping to stop her to no avail.</em></p><p><em>

<em>Until the timely arrival of Joanne Rodriguez. J-Ro took to the ring and immediately the two main eventers would descend into a brawl. Evenly matched in the early goings, J-Ro took the upper hand with a series of dropkicks which slowly ejected Suzue from the ring.</em></p><p><em>

Jessica Bunny found herself handcuffed to the ropes midway through the match essentially turning it into a handicapped match. It wasn't long before Katherine Goodlooks found herself on the wrong end of a high angle DDT through a table.</em></p><p><em>

<em>In a hard fought match Nadia Snow seemed to find her supposed equal in Tracy Brendon tonight. If it wasn't for a timely save by Demelza Wade, Snow may not have been able to kick out before a three count. The interruption also served to thoroughly distract Brendon long enough for Snow to take home the pin via a debilitating Snow Ball. The A-Listers celebrated Snow's win by shouting "You're welcome" to the chorus of the audience's audible boos.</em></p><p><em>

Harper beat York up one side of the gymnasium and down the other before finally tossing her into the ring to begin the match. <em>The night started strong and ended in the same fashion. It was as an uphill battle for York thanks to Harper's sneak attack. But she was all too willing to climb. The two Angels gave each other everything they had to give in match that started slow-paced and built its way up to an explosive finish. Barely able to reverse the Fisherman Suplex, York was able to dig deep and hit the Energy Burst for the pinfall.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Myself included.</p><p> </p><p> To make matters worse. When trying to bring in new up and coming talent, Anne has to shoot down all my offers. Apparently, and I quote, no one is interested in seeing those circus spectacles. Ignoring the fact that pro wrestling came about from carnival shows, basically she doesn't want me to hire anyone who can work a turnbuckle without keeping their feet planted on the ground.</p><p> </p><p> On the bright side. She did fire Black Widow. Apparently, Widow got into it with Jaime Quine. And push come to shove Catherine's worth to the company came out to be more valuable than the Widow's. I'm not complaining though, she was unpleasant to be around. Left a dead bird in my car as a welcoming prank. How she got into my car an hour after I bought it I will never know.</p><p> </p><p> Still my newcomers initiative went well after getting past the road block of aunt Anne shooting me in the foot every step of the way. Not that it took away from giving Christy Higgins an opportunity to practice her improv act with mock ceremonial shootings. It also helped that it meant Catherine had more people to train in her off time. Which meant she had another excuse to avoid a double date with Duane Stone and Kristabel Plum whom apparently started dating recently. </p><p> </p><p> <span style="color:#000080;">"Hey. Little Red was it?"</span> A particularly crisp Brittish accent would call out after knocking on my door. Tamara was lucky she wasn't in choking distance for spreading that pet name around. Still, this was the first time a wrestler other than Tamara had bothered to stop by.</p><p> </p><p> <span style="color:#8B0000;">"Kate will do just fine. Come in."</span></p><p> </p><p> <span style="color:#000080;">"Listen, Kate I know you have only been here for a few weeks. In this case the match came to a close when Suzue Katayama assaulted Jaime Quine to the point that the referee had to stop the match. The referee's lack of attention span caused a massive miscommunication between competitors and ruining their timing. They call me the main eventer who hates the main event. It's not even true really. I just love opening the show up even more. Knowing that I'm the one that gets to set the pace. The energy you feel at the beginning of a show is like nothing else.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>On being left behind after Pretty Amazing:</strong></p><p> You have to understand I'm the woman who is three hours early at the start of the show. And three hours late leaving. I stay behind, I help clean up. I contribute to the after action review conversations. I make sure the caterers didn't bring anything that could risk our performers before the bosses do. It's my life I love the business. So I have no complaints about this. But I'm beat by the end of the night, and sometimes I just don't have it in me to drive. And I'm prompt, If I say I'm going to be somewhere at a certain time I'm going to be there. So I came in with Demelza Wade and was expecting to leave with her around midnight. Unfortunately, Demelza and Michelle Brendon had decided to race around on their motorcycles in some sort of local competition. So I'm left waiting until two in the morning for a half asleep Tracy Brendon to pick me up.</p><p> </p><p> <strong>Her career:</strong></p><p> Everyone has highs and they have lows. Be it Tommy Cornell or Vikki Victoria. My career is no different in that regard. I hear all the conspiracy theories as to why the big women's divisions haven't picked me up. And they're all well and good. But I don't care if they ever do. I am a goal oriented person. From the moment I took my first step into the ring I decided what my legacy would be. I don't want to be known as the greatest women's wrestler nor the biggest star to never make it. I will settle for nothing less than simply the greatest. Will I ever cement that legacy? Who cares. I don't. If I'm wrestling in an empty barn or in front of millions in new york. You will get one hundred person J-Ro every single time. I have no regrets and I never will. Because I live and breathe in that squared circle. Mondays and Tuesdays I go down to Cat's Lair and teach some classes. Wednesdays, I run a few drills with the younger more inexperienced members of the locker room. Thursday through Saturday I'm on the road watching smaller local shows and sometimes even participating. Sunday is my slow down day. And none of that includes all my actual contracted appearances any given month. I'm not the one who goes home thinking they're going to be the next Tommy Cornell. No, I'm the one who goes home and says I want Tommy Cornell to say he's going to be the next J-Ro.</p>

Hahaha. Sick. She's probably gonna be 'that worker', too... you know, the one who ends up finding positive chemistry EVERYWHERE. She can be a righteous pain in the butt, sure, but I once had a 5SSW game that went on for several years in-game... and not a single problem with Higa. Due to that and some other awesome stuff I vowed it would be the game I stuck with until the sun went down on the Cornellverse and regens ruled the airwaves...

 

But then TEW2013 came out. Oh well!

Zoe Ammis was snatched up by NOTBPW. She was still one half of our tag team champions. Just as we were preparing a program for Blake and Ammis to eventually lose the titles. So Aunt Anne, control freak that she is, has taken it upon herself to call me every hour on the hour with an update of how we're going to deal with this.</p><p> </p><p> Everyone and their mom has voiced their opinions on who should carry the belt. Namely themselves. And The A List are of course the biggest tag team draws. But devoting them to rebuilding our tag team division might harm their momentum considering the only gal the audience has more heat for than either either of them is Grace Harper.</p><p> </p><p> To make it worse I find out Joanne got an Upper Respiratory on a flight back from Japan. She's in absolutely no condition to perform in the ring. Her and Katayama were originally scheduled to open the show with a submission match which would have been a vehicle to advance their burgeoning feud.</p><p> </p><p> Girl on Girl Action now revolves around a tournament for the Tag Team championship. I've had to scramble to call in some favors to bring some new blood in for the tournament.
