THE DIARY

Fairly straightforward - this is a 1997 World Wrestling Federation game starting January Week 1 1997. My user character is Vince McMahon. I expect to update fairly regularly, although as a second diary it may be a bit slower than some. Aside from the shows there will be no backstage goings on, but there will probably be some sort of news setup, if only to keep track of WCW and any big moments the game and/or AI have managed to throw up during the course of the game.

 

THE SETUP

I am using the excellent
mod by NWAvsWWF. I believe I may have knocked down a couple of lifestyle penalties a little further (I realised Savio Vega was at 75% hard drugs when I was in March!). I
think
I am using 1.2, but if there are any other major differences people spot then it may be that the save was started in an earlier version.

 

THE PLAN

As is the case in my TCW diary, shows are being written as they are run in-game. This not only helps with booking future shows (as I can pre-book them more logically), but it also means that I won't fall behind. The style of writing is pretty much identical to that diary, and I have (almost) all the way to Wrestlemania 13 booked and written up at the time of writing. In other words, barring any unforseen circumstances (like everyone deciding it is too bad to continue!) this should at least reach that far.

 

The idea behind my game is to keep it as realistic to the time as possible. It won't be an exact copy, but big moments in 1997 (and beyond should it get that far) will be replicated in-game unless something conspires against it. For example, at the risk of giving everyone a free prediction point, Bret Hart and Steve Austin's Wrestlemania 13 match will almost certainly follow the same path. Hopefully that will allow the diary to 'sit well' with readers, without making it feel like reading a real results site. Ironically, much of the information behind this 'realism' comes from said results sites (1997 was, after all, 16 years ago) or wikipedia, so if there are oddities such as a face acting as a heel, or someone returning from injury too early etc. then that's my excuse!

 

There will be a prediction competition, but as yet I have no ideas for prizes. Usually it would be a ThunderVerse related prize, but that may not interest readers of this diary. It can't be booking related (as I am too far ahead), but suggestions are welcome if anyone comes up with something.

 

INSPIRATION

The inspiration behind this game are, in no particular order...

 

angeldelayette
- his diaries are always superb, and having re-read a couple of his USPW epics the booking is also extremely strong. He was also very encouraging when I first starting thinking about turning this into a diary.

20LEgend
- recently started a new USPW diary after what seemed to be a long hiatus, and he did a great job with WWE 2002 (even if it didn't last as long). His earlier diaries were a lot of fun too!

Eisen-Verse
- doesn't really need explaining. The way he moulded a new promotion in DOA into his own definitely helped my belief that I could do the same with TCW.

Bigpapa42
- always an enormous help, BP is a genious storyteller and all of his diaries are a must read.

NoNeck
- I really enjoyed NN's take on PWI and his cut down style was a big inspiration for the show writing in my TCW diary, and by virtue of the fact this one follows the same style, this diary too!

Sebsplex, MJStark et al
- The ThunderVerse team as a unit are always very supportive, and a big reason behind my current diary writing spree.

 

I'd also like to thank

for creating the mod, and also RW diarists such as
Keefmoon, michgs, TheLloyd, The Final Countdown
and others who do such an excellent job of balancing reality with creativity.

<p>That's the basic information out of the way. I plan on doing a second roster writeup after Wrestlemania 13 is posted (as quite a bit changes between now and then), but hopefully the starting roster will be a useful reference point. I usually like to read a show before jumping into a diary, so I will be posting the first show of this one later on today, with predictions starting for for Superstars.</p><p> </p><p>

While I remember - RAW starts out at an hour long, and continues that way until the rebranding to RAW Is WAR at the beginning of March when it becomes a 90 minute show. Superstars is also an hour show (although it's a B-Show so doesn't get the same level of detail as RAW).</p><p> </p><p>

<p>As mentioned earlier, as a B-show Superstars will be a bit less detailed, although perhaps as a natural progression, it does become more involved as the shows go on. If it warrants it, the show may end up presented in much the same way as RAW, but I decided it wasn't worth adding in pictures for the length of writeup here.</p><p> </p><p>

Hey, just a tip - put '' in Diesel and Ramon (''Diesel'', ''Ramon''), as i somehow thought that it was the Real Diesel that lost to Goldust on Superstars :p

The formation of DX, the evolution of Rocky Maivia, and Austin's rise to superstardom all start in 1997. There's a lot to look forward to, which isn't always the case in RW mods (where often the best bits are behind you!). I have done a similar thing with a DOTT game (twice, actually as I did the same in 2010) where I had some guidelines but also had some variation. For example, I had an excellent feud between The British Bulldogs and the Rougeaus that had a far bigger profile than real life. Although I haven't actually made it that far yet, I intend(ed) to have Andre go into Wrestlemania 3 as champion (and have Hogan win, of course). I also had Strikeforce made up of Tom Zenk and Tito Santana (instead of RL's Rick Martel & Tito Santana), because Martel was on a written somewhere else, and the Zenk-Martel connection (no pun intended) was too good to pass up. So there will be similar moments, but there may be a twist or two of my own whether by design or because of things the game throws at me. </p><p> </p><p> Really, it allows me to book in a realistic way (which I <em>have</em> to do personally) without finding myself rebooking real PPVs. This is cool, totally gonna be reading. Good first couple of shows, this is a very interesting time period to see what you're gonna be doing. You have all of these new guys to build up like Austin and Rock as you said, but I'm curious to see what you'll do with guys like Sid and Vader who I always enjoyed a lot but kinda quickly faded in '97. You have so many pieces in 1997 that it's actually ridiculous. Good luck.

There are a few people that perhaps didn't get much chance to shine (Vader being an obvious example), or didn't get as much time at the top as they perhaps should have (Sid, Faarooq perhaps?). As far as I know, The Headbangers debuted as The Flying Nuns, and morphed into the Headbangers after a few weeks (at least, that's the basic history I'm using). I think that's where the skirts come from too, although I may be wrong about that.</p>

Ok, I´m little bit wary about predictiong WWF on this time period as I just don´t know most of these guys and plenty of guys that I would know have differend gimmicks and look so much younger that I don´t realize it´s someone familiar (I didn´t realize Leif Cassidy is Al Snow or that Sultan is Rikishi for example until it was pointed out). This will likely lead to some very embarrassing comments about not knowing someone when he´s in reality is a big name who just have gimmick I´m not familiar with. Right, now that I have covered my back it´s time to start making those embarrassing comments. :p

No idea who Rock... just kidding, Rocky will be bigger name in the future but at this point Faarooq is still the more over guy and thus more likely to win. Besides this is in the B-show and if Rocky would go over, I figure it would be in RAW where it would gain more exposure.

Not to worry, Zergon! If there's any you (or anyone else) doesn't recognise I'll do my best to let you know who they are.

 

Jesse James, for example, went (goes!?) on to become the Road Dogg of New Age Outlaws/DX fame. Before that, however, he was an ally of Jeff Jarrett (who by this point was in WCW), before becoming the "Real Double J" Jesse James. Fairly sure before he did the NAO intros, he used to sing a song on the way to the ring as James! :D

MONDAY NIGHT RAW #2 Confirmed Matches (Heels First)

The Sultan vs Goldust - The future Rikishi, recently hotshotted "Make a Difference" Fatu is a jobber at this point.

Steve Austin vs British Bulldog - Likewise. Stone Cold's on the way up, while Bulldog, despite being just two years older, is slipping.

 

SUPERSTARS #2 Confirmed Matches (Heels First)

The Flying Nuns (aka The Headbangers) vs The New Blackjacks - Sister Angelica and Mother Smucker! I actually loved that gimmick, even if I only found out about it at least a decade after the fact.

Savio Vega vs Jesse James - B.G.'s still jobbing as of early '97, IIRC.

Faarooq vs Rocky Maivia - Plain vanilla Rocky wins and the crowd goes "DIE ROCKY DIE!"
