Last week's Royal Rumble pulled a 3.64 buy rate, compared to 3.42 for Souled Out 1997. <p>While 11 days of inactivity might suggest that this diary is dead, I just wanted to say that it isn't. However, it is going on hiatus for a short while until RL allows me a bit more time to run the diary properly. The shows are actually (mostly) written until the end of May, so there's no reason why the diary shouldn't continue again in a few weeks.</p><p> </p><p>

The first Monday Night RAW of February 1997 hailed from Ontario, Canada and kicked off with The Undertaker in the centre of the ring. The Undertaker said that he was expecting the melee at the end of last week's RAW and was not disappointed. At the Royal Rumble, said the Phenom, he admitted he was fooled by the man that had raised him, that had trained him. However, The Undertaker continued, he has seen into the fires of hell and the man standing on the other side isn't calling for The Undertaker...he's calling for Paul Bearer! Furthermore, he had called on The Undertaker to bring Bearer to justice!

VADER & MANKIND

When the arena PA burst into life, however, it wasn't Paul Bearer that appeared on the stage, but his henchmen Vader and Mankind. The two walked slowly to the ring and looked ready to attack, but neither masked man was willing to make the first move. While The Undertaker beckoned them to join him in the ring, Vader and Mankind argued among themselves. Unfortunately for the fans, before they could make a decision about the (almost certainly entertaining) brawl-to-be, the WWF fun police rushed in to separate Paul Bearer's Army from The Undertaker in the ring. While Vader and Mankind showed some effort to break free, Taker seemed pleased that he had inspired enough fear in Paul Bearer's freshest recruits.

The WWF World Tag Team title was on the line as

took on the
Can-Am Express
to open the show. An excellent encounter saw the continuation of the potential heel turn from Bulldog and Hart. The Express looked slick as always, but any chances they had to win the match looked set to be thrown out as Steve Austin made his way to the ring! When the referee was knocked down by a clumsy throw from Bulldog, Austin stormed the ring and hit the
Stunner
on Bulldog...the Furnas...then Owen...then Phil LaFon! Austin draped the arm of LaFon over Owen Hart...but the referee was still out. Austin made his way to the back but the match wasn't over and Bulldog came around the quickest...and headed for the title belts! Bulldog used the belt to take out Doug Furnas, then went for the cover as the referee woke up! Had Bulldog and Hart finally confirmed their heel turn in
Canada
of all places!?

RESULT: Owen Hart & British Bulldog win in 8:15 to retain the WWF WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES! B-

After the match Owen and Davey Boy cut a promo explaining their turn, saying that for weeks they had stood by and watched as Vader, Sycho Sid, Steve Austin and Mankind cheated their way to the top of the World Wrestling Federation and yet in all that time they have seen none of these men receive a punishment, none have been fined wages, and they have suffered no lack of support from the fans despite their heelish ways. Owen explained that they had decided that only a schmuck would take the long road to the top, and as champions they had decided to follow the example of those mentioned before to do things the easy way for a change. Oh, and if the fans didn't like that...well tough!

. Stood in Sultan's corner Bob Backlund seemed particularly fired up for the match, having feuded with Bret Hart for the World title (among other reasons) for the best part of a year in 1994/95. However, the always-professional Hart was entirely focused on his barbaric opponent, and it didn't take long for the Excellence Of Execution to secure the victory with a sixth minute

BRET HART - STEVE AUSTIN

Bret Hart's celebrations were cut short in predictable fashion as Steve Austin ran to the ring and began trading punches with the Hitman. Having just had a match, few would be expected to see Hart tire quickly, but he seemed to hold his own...until Bob Backlund hit him with a low blow from behind! Austin took the opportunity handed to him to hit the
Stone Cold Stunner
on his rival! Austin then proceeded to rip a Canadian flag from a nearby fan and drape it over Bret as he mimed a number "1" in the air above his head. The message was clear - Austin was letting everyone know just who the Number One Star is in the World Wrestling Federation today!

With just moments to go until the much anticipated headline of this episode of WWF Monday Night RAW, a short video played hyping that very match, the upcoming main event between new World Wrestling Federation champion Shawn Michaels and the previous champ Sycho Sid for the WWF World title in what is being billed as a Royal Rumble Rematch!

After these two men put on a good show at the Royal Rumble, the expectations going into this rematch were high. Fortunately, both men delivered spectacularly in one of the finest matches Sid has ever put on.
Sycho Sid
came out quickly, using his power to great effect, but
Shawn Michaels
put on another phenomenal all-round performance that reiterated just how good a performer the Heartbreak Kid really is. After seeing Michaels perform, Sid seemed to take his Sycho moniker to heart, and set about completely destroying Michaels to the point where not only was HBK hobbling around the ring with an injured knee, but he was also bleeding from head-to-toe. Sid picked up HBK...

Sid picked him up again...
Chokeslam!
Sid picked him up again, but by that point HBK had lost a lot of blood and he looked barely able to stand! Sid continued to deal out the punishment, refusing to bring the match to a close. With no end in sight, and potentially a medical emergency on his hands, the referee had no choice but to stop the match in order to rush HBK to the hospital!.

RESULT: Sycho Sid wins via stoppage in 11:35! B+

The damage done to Michaels was immediately obvious and while the announce team stood in stunned silence, the entire medical staff poured in from the back to attend to HBK. The show still had minutes to roll, and there was no option but to focus on the carnage in the centre of the ring. As the show went off the air thousands of worried fans watching on as Sid demanded to know if he had been made the new WWF World Champion...

Vince McMahon opened the show by informing fans that he had no news regarding the condition of Shawn Michaels. However, promised Vince, if the fans tune into RAW on Monday night then there he could guarantee there would be an update on HBK, and the title situation.

The Can-Am Express
defeated new WWF duo
The Headbangers
by disqualification in the opening match. Thrasher hit Doug Furnas with a steel chair to end the contest at 7:49.

The Sultan
continued the in-ring action with a dominant victory over full-time jobber
Barry Horowitz
. It took only 3:43 for Sultan to destroy his opponent, much to the delight of his manager Bob Backlund.

Before the next match WWF President Gorilla Monsoon came to the ring and banned Farooq, Crush and PG-13 (all members of the Nation) from ringside for the following contest. Failure to do so, Monsoon said, would result in fines, suspensions or firings!

In a quick segment before the match could finally begin, Bret Hart and Jim Ross conducted a backstage, sit-down interview. JR started off by revealing that Bret and Steve Austin would go face-to-face on RAW, before asking The Hitman about his thoughts on that upcoming bout. Bret said that he hoped the opportunity to prove to Austin once and for all who is boss would see Stone Cold turn a corner in his career, and making him a better wrestler and a better person!

In the ring Goldust and Marlena cut a promo. The duo said that they are hoping Rocky Maivia will teach Hunter Hearst Helmsley a lesson he won't forget on RAW (a match that will see the WWF Intercontinental title on the line), and said they'd be backing the third-generation superstar all the way!

The main event saw one-half of the Tag Team champions

. The match featured good in-ring action and Holly made a good showing, but most fans were confident that the Englishman would win and a

After the match Owen Hart and the Bulldog cut a promo taunting the New York City audience as being beneath them. Hart and Smith said that if they never had to wrestle in New York again it'd be too soon, and that while the New Yorkers in attendance wallowed in their own desperate struggles, for the World Tag Team champions things were only going to get better!
