WCW 2001: The End Is The Begining...Is The End?

Recommended Posts

The following is a dinasty based on Genadi's WCW Lives 2001 mod. In this universe, WCW was bought by Bischoff and Fusient Media Ventures in March 2001 and the outcome of that purchase is presented as a TV series created by WCW called: "The New Era," a narrated show (with interviews and commentaries from WCW workers, as well as people from outside the company) that started airing in August 2001 and was inovating as it was showing events such as backstage incidents and shooting interviews just months or weeks after they happend. Some parts of the background story will be different from those that actually happened in real life up to March 2001. That is intended. For example, in this Universe, Sting and Rena Mero divorced their respective spouses somewhere in 2000 and began a relatiohship soon after. Also in this universe, Dave Meltzer founded a new website called Total Extreme Wrestling.com (TEW.com) and became the world reference of wrestling reviews, interviews and analysis, grading shows from 0 to 100. This plot device was created to insert the TEW grades on the dyansty's cannon. I hope you all enjoy this idea.

WCW Presents: The New Era (Narrated by David Arquette)

The end...

Ric Flair: I think everyone knew that it was a matter of time until WCW went out of business.

Eric Bischoff: We were sinking...and there were a lot of reasons for that, but the biggest one was the fact that WWF was better at the time. That's how business works.

Was the beginning...

Sting: I had no idea why i was being picked as WCW's new head booker, but i really wanted to change things and cause an impact.

Eric Bischoff: Fusient Media Venture's purchase kept us going, but things were not the same. The Monday Night wars were over...and boy...did we lose them.

Was the end?

Bill Goldberg: As soon as i heard that Sting was the new booker I thought "Man...we are going down." It wasn't personal, I just never thought of him as a booker.

Shawn Michaels: I was asked to joined that ship...and i said no. And Sting was, is, and will always be my friend. But i did not want to have anything to do with that sinking ship. Not because of Sting, I was rooting for him...but it seemed that nothing good could come out of that.

(Shawn Michaels, former WWF worker, courtesy of TEW.com)

Experience the doubts:

Dusty Rhodes: No one big, Like Hogan for example, or Michaels, wanted to come here, no matter how much they were offered. No one actually believed that WCW would survive that long.

CM Punk: I swear to god, I had no reason to complain...but the whole thing was a mess. One day we were being told to do one thing...the next day we were told to ignore what they just told us to do. It was a mess.

Sting: People expected a master plan of some sorts...but that was thrown out the window on day 1. I realised that no plan would work. The backstage was such a mess since Time Warner had ditched us, and i saw that the only way we could have a shot at surviving would be by going with the flow.

The tensions:

Eric Bischoff: I wanted to fire Sting. And i was just looking for an excuse. Why? Because we looked like a sinking ship, no direction but down...no plan. Every day I would ask him what the plan was and he would say "Relax, I've got it all covered" or some sort of answer like that. but he seemed so confident and he really had a genuine smile on his face. The man looked like he knew what he was doing. How could I fire him?

Dusty Rhodes: A lot of people wanted Sting fired...but hardly anyone had anything against him, with some obvious exceptions, or even a valid reason to fire him. What was that all about? Maybe fear. The company was going down since March and almost no one had hope, which is sad. The backstage atmosphere was awful. Things were not looking bright.

The Heartbreaks:

Bam Bam Bigelow: Sting called me to his office and said he was letting me go. Point blank...just like that. One would think a christian guy would give us that news in a different way. But looking back...he did the right thing. Can't say I blame him.

Booker T: I was expecting changes when Sting was appointed...and I was right...I just didn't expect things to go like that, never thought things would start that way.

Sting: Any plan i had was dumped as soon as Gene died. That changed our comeback show. And to see our first show changed by such a tragic event really made me put things into perspective and go all out, like an improvised match. It would suck, or it would rock. No middle term existed.

The glory:

Ric Flair: I don't need to be asked to put on a great show. It's my job, it's my duty. So when i was told to work with Dustin I knew we could do great things...and i knew it was my duty to make sure that happened. I would have loved to do so on PPV, but that was great TV, which was something we needed.

Chris Daniels: To be called and said..."Hey, you're going to the main roster. We're giving you a chance to show us someting." is what every worker wants to hear. Especially on a company like WCW.

Road Warrior Animal: No one believed in me. Not even me. Sting did. And I was glad I was given a chance to show something on PPV as a singles worker, cause i might never have that chance again.

Experience the shock:

Ric Flair: I was in awe. And not in a good way. There i was, busting my ass on TV every god damn week...and suddenly I see my match on The Great American Bash being announced as a career threatening match...live. With no warning of any kind, and no hype. When 2 hours earlier I was told I would lose the match. Was I being fired? Why?

Experience the intensity:

Rena Mero: People were thinking I was being hired because the booker was my boyfriend. They never even considered I had something to offer. That hurts.

Bret Hart: The fans are always the first ones to see the big picture. And they realised that history was in the making long before a lot of peole in WCW's backstage did. I know that... as a wrestling fan, that was how I saw things. And I was right. (Bret Hart, former WWF/WCW worker, courtesy of TEW.com)

And the controversy:

Sting: I never thought that me and Rena would make a good storyline. I never thought of it as something fans would crave to see. I know that wrestling feeds itself from injecting truth on it's storylines, but i never thought that me and Rena would make any kind of groundbreaking TV. And quite honestly...I was too busy thinking what to do with a huge roster to even consider that.

Hulk Hogan: I have a legacy to protect...and I saw me signing with WCW as something that, at that point, could tarnish my legacy...brother. (Hulk Hogan, former WWF/WCW worker, courtesy of TEW.com)

Bret Hart: The only legacy that Hulk Hogan thinks about protecting is his wallet...(does a Hulk Hogan impersonation) "Brother!" And he fails miserably at doing so. I could accept that statement from someone like Shawn Michaels, if he was the one saying it. Everyone knows what Shawn is, and what I think about him...but yeah, i could accept that statement coming from someone like Shawn as being more legitimate than coming out of Hogan's mouth. Was I contacted to return to WCW? No. Why would I? I can't wrestle anymore. Would I go back? I don't think so...but I would deal with that kind of invitation when - and if - it ever was made. (Courtesy of TEW.com)

Sting: Would I ever sign The Ulitimate Warrior? No...f**k no! And that profanity just came out of a born-again christian's mouth. So...no, I would not.

Eric Bischoff: Did Sting contact Warrior to sign? No. Was he contacted by WCW? Yes. I saw our storylines as dull, our product as predictable and I thought we needed star power, and even after all of what had happened in 98, I contacted him. I saw no long time plan being made and, I can't stress this out enough, I thought we needed a plan and some star power. But at some point I was forced to chose between signing him or trusting the man I had hired to book the company. We all know how that turned out.

Sting: A plan? No...we had a history with plans. At some point we had too many plans and not enough action, and that led to WCW beind dumped by Time Warner. So...my mind was set in planning as less as possible.

Experience wrestling as you've never seen it before. No stone will be unturned...no truth will be hidden. In WCW Presents: The New Era you will have a unique look behind the curtains. WCW Presents: The New Era, coming this summer...exclusively on Bravo TV.

<p>Interesting...I'll check it out. Anything with Sting as the focal point is awesome.</p><p> </p><p>

I'm also playing the 2001 scenario and you hit the nail on the head when you said it's tough to go National....I'm 2 years in and I haven't really even made a dent yet at sniffing the National level.</p>

<p>So...a word to my readers, bear with me on this one: I will put the starting roster, starting champs, teams and maybe events on those reserved posts but i will not update them. For several reasons, one of them is that i disagree with that policy, it ends up serving as spoilers for new readers that come on board later. Also beacause, and you might have already seen this by now, this is a not a regular diary. It's all about the writing, the story and how you guys see how that is transpiring. So will use no images and I will not update those first posts. Instead of gvining you all the information on those I will try to see how you think a wrestler's push is going, jus by seeing what he does on Nitro and based on the interviews. I might be a fun idea. Kind of how watching a real TV show. There is no site telling you who's getting wich push, you have t figure it out by yourself based on what you see.</p><p> </p><p>

I will try to do my presentation in the following format. Every Nitro and PPV will be the center of a New Era episode and I will divide those in 3 parts: Interviews and narration before the Nitro (or PPV), Nitro itself reviewed by Meltzer's TEW. com and than more interviews and narration. Hope you guys like it.</p>

Sounds unique. Usually only follow about 3 or 4 diaries at any given time and I like what I've seen so far. Shame WCW couldn't get your namesake...HBK to come in. Imagine what that would have done for them in real life! Shawn shocks everyone by coming out of retirement and helping WCW get back on track. Oh well, I think the Sable dating Sting thing is kinda interesting.

Oh well, I think the Sable dating Sting thing is kinda interesting.</div></blockquote><p> </p><p> We know,so far, that he refused to go there when it was bought by Fusient and Bischoff. But will WCW rise to national and be able to sign some of these guys, or will it fail miserably and remain as cult, or worst? That's the main question. As for Sting dating Sable, i thought some romance tale was needed in here, as there is always one in the big stories. The fact that Sting refuses to put his relationship with Sable on a storyline and the tensions her hiring generates are just some of the angles that it's possible to explore. Anything can happen. Wich is always good for the dynasty business.</p>

<div style="text-align:center;"><p><span style="color:#FF0000;">The New Era Report, by Dave Meltzer (From TEW.com, July week 4, 2001)</span></p></div><p></p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p>WCW Presents: The New Era, also known as The New Era, or simply TNE, is an upcoming TV show that premieres next month, on the second week of August, to be precise, on Bravo TV, home of the new Monday Night Nitro. Nitro currently airs on early evening, and TNE will air right after Nitro, thus maintaining the early evening time slot in which Nitro airs live, and avoiding a Monday Night Wars version 2, at least for now.</p><p> </p><p>

This show has been more hyped than anything else that i have seen...really...ever. And if what WCW and Bravo TV have been promoting on it's hype videos has any truth, we should expect some sort of unscripted Drama/ Reality Show/ Documentary. While some of the videos have been really good, and shocking, i still find it hard to believe that WCW is really going to be that truthful and completely shatter kayfabe. But if they do that...it is a must see.</p><p> </p><p>

What we know so far about the show, besides that whole braking kayfabe aspect, is that it began being filmed in March 2001, when Time Warner sold WCW. So we might see footage all the way since before WCW's return to TV and maybe get to see how that really happened. We also know that each episode is one hour long, and that it's official season premiere will be Monday, in the second week of August. But there will also be a half hour special episode, already being promoted as episode zero, that will be a soft opening, or a Series Preview. In this preview we will probably see what happened after WCW got sold, how Sting was promoted to head booker, and they will probably talk about Gene Okerlund's death. And the show is being filmed since March, so we can probably expect some Mean Gene unaired interviews, or something like that.</p><p> </p><p>

Episode 0 will also show the card for Nitro's first show on Bravo, or at least the card that was known by then and being promoted at the time. If this show lives up to it's hype and actually is as real as it promises to be...than it will be history in the making, and probably the most controversial thing ever done on Pro-Wrestling. If not...people will definitely feel ripped-off after so much hype. So let's hope that TNE is actually breaking away from kayfabe as much as it promises. I know i will be here next week to analyze episode 0. Feel free to join in for that, at TEW.com.</p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:left;"><p><strong>(OOC: Episode 0 will have the prediction key for Nitro's debut.)</strong></p></div><p></p>

Starting events, teams, stables, funds and size updated on the 3rd post, as well as upcoming events. The initial 3 posts are now completed. Each "The New Era" season will be divided in chapters, each chapter may last several episodes, or just 1 or 2, depending on the subjects covered. The plan is to divide episodes into more than one part, one of those parts being Nitro itself. That is the plan so far. Chapter one is called "What Kind of Day Has it Been" and Episode 0 (One part only episode) is called "Sinking Ship." Let me know what you guys think. Episode 0 will be up soon, if all goes acording to plan. Enjoy. And until we meet again...feel free to discuss this.

Sorry guys, my malfunctioning keybaord issues continue to deteriorate, whick makes it real hard to write such a long story and on this type of format. That's the main reason for the delay. So I hope I won't lose my followers, cause as soon as i can, I will finish and post episode 0. I apologize for the delay.

Sorry about that, but that also means there is more to read. I hope that you guys see it as good news. <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> Part 1 will be the bigger part, it will be up today. Part 2 will be a smaller part, and it will contain Nitro's predictions. Feel free to give your opinions. I will get back to my work on episode 0.</p>
