WWE SmackDown!
Thursday, Week 4, September 2004

A big main event tag match is in store for this week's SmackDown episode, and it could go a long way in deciding momentum heading into next Sunday's No Mercy pay-per-view! Brock Lesnar will team with "The Censor" Luther Reigns to take on the WWE Champion Eddie Guerrero alongside Bryan Lloyd! Which team will gain a crucial advantage heading into their showdowns at the PPV?

John Cena's crusade against JBL and his Cabinet continues as he goes one-on-one with Orlando "The Heir" Jordan! Can he earn a United States Title shot by going through all three Chosen Ones in just two weeks? Also, Stevie Richards defends his WWE TV Title against Matt Hardy one more time! Can he pick up another win?

Find out what happens at 8 pm Eastern/5 pm Pacific this Thursday night on UPN!

It was probably a little bit too subtle, and it could easily have gone over people's heads. It's involved in next week's RAW, but remember how Michaels promised Orton a title shot if he was still champion after the title match? Yeah.

I've unintentionally ruined Hardy :( but Johnny is actually coming along really well. Much quicker than I expected. This feud with Jericho should further boost him regardless of who comes out on top. I say that because I'm only a week ahead in booking, whereas I'm typically about a month past where I'm writing. Next week you'll find out why I can't jump ahead so fast. :)

WWE SmackDown!
Thursday, Week 4, September 2004

The opening video, backed by "Rise Up" performed by Drowning Pool plays as Michael Cole and Tazz greet us from ringside. They hype the big tag team main event as well as John Cena taking on Orlando Jordan! The bell cuts them off as TV Title action kicks off the show.

Stevie Richards w/Dawn Marie ©
vs.
Matt Hardy

Stevie and "The Sensei of Mattitude" put on a high-quality match to kick off the evening, with both men reaching quite a few near falls in pursuit of the Television Title. Unfortunately, it ended in a less-than-satisfying way for those in attendance, as Matt Hardy was able to roll up Stevie Richards and put his feet on the ropes without the referee noticing to steal the TV belt!

After the match, Hardy celebrated obnoxiously, having become the second WWE Television Champion, while both Richards and Dawn Marie unsuccessfully pleaded with the referee to have the call reversed.

Rey Mysterio w/Billy Kidman
vs.
Lance Storm w/Charlie Haas

One of the challengers for the Tag Titles took on one of the champions as former ECW and WCW alumni Rey Mysterio and Lance Storm locked horns. In a pretty decent matchup between veterans, Mysterio capitalized on outside chaos between Kidman and Haas to hit the 6-1-9 and pick up a nice win!

In the back,
The Big Show
is talking about last week's loss against Dupree and Angle, and how he wants to challenge Kurt to a match at No Mercy. As he goes along talking about this challenge, he's attacked from behind by
Kurt Angle
himself! "The Olympic Hero" puts the boots to him and tosses him into the set of Josh Mathews' interview segment, hitting him with a steel chair afterwards, and accepting his challenge before leaving the giant in a heap.

Super Crazy
vs.
Muhammad Hassan w/Daivari

Super Crazy was an ECW stalwart who knows how to push his opponent to the limit, but Hassan was too driven, too determined on this night. After a reverse STO, the Camel Clutch ended this one.

After the match, Daivari fetches a microphone for Muhammad Hassan. Hassan stands in the ring and reiterates what he’s been saying, talking about how he has conquered every obstacle in his way thus far. He knows that his nationality and his heritage incite fear and ignorance, but he wasn’t aware of the degree of cowardice in the SmackDown locker room. He says that no one has challenged him for No Mercy and that he’s going to take the initiative to extend an open challenge to anyone who wants to stand up and face him. If this is what it takes for the WWE to put him on a pay-per-view stage, Hassan confidently states that he will take on anyone.

Backstage,
Booker T
is standing and talking to someone as
Rene Dupree
walks onto the screen. Dupree, with his robe and crown, mocks him about losing to him last week on SmackDown. After about 30 seconds of being uncharacteristically silent, the five-time WCW Champion cracked Rene in the face with a sucker punch! Dupree checked his jaw for blood before the two got into a bit of a pull-apart brawl! Officials are able to get in between them as Dupree is escorted away!

Jimmy Yang and Ultimo Dragon
vs.
Jamie Noble and Nunzio

This matchup was a result of last week’s episode of Yang Time, where Noble and Nunzio attacked Carlito and Eddie Colon. This one showcased four high-quality cruiserweight talents, and it was a very good matchup. Noble and Nunzio started to use some underhanded tactics, and, in order to turn the tides, The Colons hit ringside and caused a distraction! This led to an Asai DDT by Dragon to Nunzio as he and Yang picked up the win!

In the back, there’s quick promo by
Scott Steiner
on Edge. His opponent at No Mercy, he claims, is a wannabe Canadian idiot who could barely lift a crappy piece of Canadian bacon! Steiner tells us (again) that he’s got the largest arms in the world and that he’s the Big Bad Booty Daddy, and he says that he’s gonna break Edge’s body and soul in half in the Steiner Recliner come No Mercy!

John Cena
vs.
Orlando Jordan w/The Cabinet

Completing his series of matches against The Chosen Ones, “The Doctor of Thuganomics” locked up with Orlando Jordan. The former United States Champion kept this one as a brawl for most of the bout. Jordan tried to use his athleticism to gain the advantage, but was only able to do so thanks to distractions from his stable members on the outside. Jordan worked over Cena for a great deal of the match, showing a great deal of wrestling ability as he dominated the former US Champ. Cena, however, did not go down quietly as he started a furious rally late in the matchup. As he went for the Five Knuckle Shuffle, Elijah Burke and Montel Porter slid inside the ring and started an attack!

Jordan climbed up to his feet, the bell ringing furiously, as JBL got inside the ring and put the boots to Cena as well. This four-on-one assault saw Ron Simmons stick to the outside, with Sable yelling at him to get in there. Cena started to fight back a bit, but was caught with a boot from Bradshaw. JBL began to bark orders, having Porter run outside to get a steel chair. He handed it to JBL, who raised it up in the air as the Chosen Ones held Cena’s arms behind his back. Instead of hitting John, Bradshaw grinned and lowered the chair, pointing to Simmons. Bradshaw threatened to terminate his contract and put his family out on the streets unless he got into the ring. Simmons slowly climbed into the ropes after sighing and JBL handed him the chair. Cole and Tazz were appalled as the United States Champion continued to insult his former best friend and told him to hit Cena with the chair. Finally, after about 3 minutes of verbal abuse, Simmons finally snapped and raised the chair over his head, begrudgingly bashing it into the skull of John Cena! Cena crumpled to the ground as JBL’s music hit and The Cabinet raised their hands high, with Simmons throwing down the chair and not partaking in the celebration.

Two quick segments lead into our final commercial break – first,
Luther Reigns and Brock Lesnar
are inside the office of
Paul Heyman
and he lets them know what’s at stake here tonight. They get to put their hands on the men that they will take on at No Mercy, and Heyman knows that both guys would like the night off assuming they can make sure their opponents don’t
make
it to No Mercy. Lesnar and Reigns seem to like the idea of total domination as this one gives way to another segment

Elsewhere,
Eddie Guerrero
and
Bryan Lloyd
are going over strategy. They both know that they’re up against it here tonight, and Eddie tells his younger counterpart that they’re just gonna go out there and give them hell. Guerrero says he’s been impressed by what Lloyd’s offered here on SmackDown and that the two of them are gonna take this fight to Paul Heyman. Tonight, the underdogs are gonna take out the monsters. This match is next!

Eddie Guerrero and Bryan Lloyd
vs.
Brock Lesnar and Luther Reigns

The main event tag team match was very tense, as all four men have had major problems with the opposing team as of late. Guerrero found himself trapped by the two larger men as they worked him over for a lot of the match. He was weary as he finally made it out after a tag to Lloyd, who came in and used some of his innovative offense to keep Lesnar and Reigns off guard. Hard kicks and knees to both men left welts and bruises, but he turned around into a near-decapitating clothesline by Lesnar. Heyman’s team gave him a similar treatment to Guerrero, although they weren’t able to hit the finishing blow. Lloyd finally squirmed his way over to a hot tag to the champion, which incited chaos in the matchup. All four men were in the ring at the same time as referee Charles Robinson tried to break up the melee between Reigns and Lloyd. As he did so, Lesnar was able to grab the WWE Title from ringside and blast Eddie in the face with it! Reigns overpowered Lloyd as he was unable to break up the pin, with Brock getting a 1-2-3 victory over the WWE Champion!

After the match, the beatdown ensues once again. Lloyd tries to break it up, but Reigns catches him with a big boot and then Eddie is all alone. Brock picks him up and plants him with an F-5 onto the title belt! Then, Lesnar grins and motions to the back, which prompts
Paul Heyman’s
arrival. SmackDown’s General Manager gets inside the ring as Brock puts one boot on the chest of the champion. No Mercy’s special referee counts a slow 1…2…3 and hands Brock the title! The enduring image of the show is Heyman holding Brock Lesnar’s hand in the air as Reigns fastens the WWE Title around his waist. Is this what’s to come in ten days at No Mercy?
