In April 2001, the pro wrestling video-distribution company RF Video needed a new promotion to lead its video sales when its best-seller — Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW) — went out of business, and the rights to its brand name were purchased by WWE. RF Video also videotaped events held by other, less-popular, regional wrestling promotions; it sold these through its catalog and website. After months of trying to join CZW, RF Video's owner, Rob Feinstein, decided to fill the ECW void by starting his own pro wrestling promotion, and distributing its made-for-DVD/VHS productions exclusively through RF Video.

 

The first event, titled The Era of Honor Begins, took place on February 23, 2002 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the former home area of ECW. It featured nine matches, including a match between Eddie Guerrero and Super Crazy for the IWA Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship; and, a triple threat match between Christopher Daniels, Bryan Danielson and Low Ki (who would become known as the "founding fathers of ROH"). ROH would then begin stealing top talents from other promotions such as JAPW and CZW. In its first year of operation, Ring Of Honor confined itself to staging live events in a limited number of venues and cities — primarily in the northeastern U.S.A. Ten shows were run in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; two in Wakefield, Massachusetts; one in metro Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; and, one in Queens, New York.

 

By the end of 2002, however Feinstein started to notice that some of his top stars were missing dates with ROH to work shows for NWA-TNA, MLW and ECWA. Feinstein put feelers out to attract some investors and for someone that could help keep the talent in ROH. The first offer he received was the one that even he couldn't turn down.....

Douglas is best known for his famous speech in 1994 when following his winning the NWA World Heavyweight Title, he threw it down and declared that the ECW World Title was the only true title, this launching the Era of Extreme that would change the wrestling industry forever. Douglas said following the Final Battle event that there would be a shake up of the current ROH roster but he has promised that the company will not turn into a clone of ECW, but something to fill that void that was left when Heyman closed the doors forever. The first big announcement he made was that effecting January 1, 2003 that Rob Feinstein would no longer be with the company, a move that shocked a lot of people, including Feinstein. Douglas said that if the company is to be successful, a clean break is needed from the old regime so the locker room is not divided. This news was rumored not to have sat well with CM Punk, Homicide and Colt Cabana, all three could be weighing their options. Last month, we learned that Shane Douglas has taken control of the company from former owner Rob Feinstein, and he wasted no time in making some noticeable changes to the roster, resulting in CM Punk's departure to the WWE. Well, we have learned that both Colt Cabana and Homicide have also signed with the WWE and have left the company. Douglas said he wished them both luck and that the door is open for a return.</span></em></p><p> </p><p> <em><span style="font-family:'Century Gothic';"> Bam Bam Bigelow made a surprise appearance at the last show, helping Douglas win the ROH Championship. He will make his in ring debut as he will face The Naturals (Andy Douglas and Chase Stevens) in a handicap match.</span></em></p><p> </p><p> <em><span style="font-family:'Century Gothic';"> Douglas announced the creation of a new singles title (ROH Pure Championship) which will be decided in a four way bout between Matt Cross, Amazing Red, BJ Whitmer and former ROH Champion, Xavier.</span></em></p><p> </p><p> <em><span style="font-family:'Century Gothic';"> Ace Steel, Low Ki, AJ Styles and Chad Collyer will all compete in a four way match to decide who will be the #1 contender to the ROH Championship at Expect The Unexpected in March.</span></em></p><p> </p><p> <em><span style="font-family:'Century Gothic';"> The Prophecy (Christopher Daniels and Donovan Morgan) retained their ROH Tag Titles against Low Ki and AJ Styles, but this time they will face two teams who are out for the gold. Josh Prohibition and Matt Stryker are new to ROH, but both are extremely dangerous.
