From Rugby To Riches, The Marcel Muller Story

Bio

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c297/HeavyMetalJesus/MarcelMuller.jpg

Name: Marcel 'The Mauler' Muller

Age: 26

Nationality: South African

Size: Big Heavyweight

Style: Powerhouse Brawler

A former rugby player before an injury ended his career, South African Marcel Muller turned to professional wrestling after a mutual friend introduced him to 'The Kipper' Kip Rockwell, an Australian veteran. Rockwell agreed to train the big former-Springbok and find him work on the independent scene. Still very early in his career, Muller works mainly as a heel playing up his rugby heritage, which is proving an effective gimmick right now, but that could change if the Aussies ever learn to scrum and start winning.

Trademark Moves

Drive To Corner

Essentially just a trademarked Toss To Corner, but the wrestler is forcefully driven backwards into the corner while in a collar-and-elbow tie up, instead of thrown. Used to set up The Big Hit.

The Big Hit

A massive Spear in the corner. Essentially Rhyno's Gore. I had to create the move but it's in line with the Animalistic Spear already in the game (it just has to be done in the corner).

We'd have to see about that! The plucky little guy had a sizeable health advantage (but nothing a broken nose couldn't sort out!), and obviously was faster - though not as much as you might think. He also had the advantage on the ground, and a large stamina and athleticism advantage (rehabbing my injury had been costly in that department!). He was a bigger star and more spirited than me, as you'd expect in my first ever match. However, when it came down to strength and striking, there was no contest. I was more than twice as strong as him, and had a sizeable advantage when striking, too.

Cross started on the offensive and takes control with a headlock, and then dropkicks me to the corner. Bizarrely considering he's smaller than a halfback on a hunger strike, he then tries to pull me out of the corner. Big mistake, as I easily reversed it, and started wailing away with chops and slaps. Eventually he avoided one, and escaped to the top turnbuckle, crashing down on me with a double axe-handle smash as I tried to shoulder block him. I powered out of his side headlock though, and dropped him with a European uppercut, a little move I learned while on a rugby tour in Ireland. Then I bit his forehead and sent him screaming to the ropes (a little move I learned from my captain on an international tour).

Things got a bit tense as he took me down with a side headlock (which was a bit embarrassing) and then started working me over while I was on the floor. But he got a bit ambitious with a fist drop which I saw coming a mile away. From then on I started smashing him about a bit with strikes and knees to the stomach. They didn't all land, but I was easily able to power out of Adgee's headlocks. By then we were both a bit worse for wear (him more than me, it has to be said). I tried a running Knee Lift, but it was countered with a dropkick, and then I was in some serious trouble as he started hitting me with some relatively big moves, and he was too fast for me to deal with it. Luckily I managed to power out of a DDT, or it could've been all over.

After that I started getting desperate and choking him out, quite blatantly. The referee wasn't happy with my tactics, but I was. Then I tripped and fell, and accidentally headbutted his private parts. Or at least that's what I told the referee. I hit a few bigger moves, and he countered one of them with a Sunset Flip but I managed to kick out just after two. He hit a DDT, and played to the fans, calling for his finisher. I was up quicker than he thought though (quicker than I thought too, to be honest) and nailed him with a Piledriver out of desperation before he knew what was happening. That evened the score a bit, energy-wise.

But I got too cocky, and missed a Big Leg Drop. Not sure what I was thinking there. He was able to score with another DDT, and after screaming at me to get up... he took me down again with a side headlock takedown. Not sure what that was about. He then dropped a leg on me, and finally hit the Legdrop Bulldog he'd tried to hit about 6 or 7 times so far. I was out for the count.

Adgee Cross pins Marcel Muller after a Legdrop Bulldog (16:33) - *

It wasn't a great match, and I can't help but feel I threw it away at several key points*. Still, it was my first taste of a competitive wrestling match. Cross has been doing it for years. I'll get the jukka next time.

(*He quite often used Dropkick to Corner followed by Drag Out Of Corner, the latter of which I was easily able to counter. However after the first few I allowed him to do it, 'for a better narrative'. Whoops!).

Week Two: Marcel 'The Mauler' Muller vs. Bob Shrunkle

This was a different kettle of fish entirely. As his name suggests, 'Bob The Blob' was a huge man, as big as me but fatter and slower. He had the strength advantage, which would be a pain in the backside (embarassingly, even a guy named 'The Blob' has more stamina than a former rugby forward. I really need to hit the gym!). In fact the only areas I had the advantage in were grappling and speed, usually my weakest areas! This would be a strange match. Luckily, Blobby was known to gas early, and where I wasn't keen on going to the top rope, he flat-out couldn't. In addition he was hard to knock down, and was clearly a very heavy dude, likely to fall on top of you if you lifted him.

I started off by toying with him, which was probably an ill-advised move. I shied away from the bell, asking Bob to take it easy on me, before smacking him upside the head when he least expected it. Following that I offered my hand by way of apology, kicking him in his expansive gut when he shook it. Having angered the big man, I hit a Knee Lift to his gut. And he just sort of stood there, blinked, and threw a headbutt my way. Uh oh.

Having been beaten around a bit and - for the first time since I quit rugby - bodyslammed, Bob tried whipping me into the corner, but I reversed him and followed him in with an elbow. I beat on him for a while, before starting to show some of the wrestling holds I'd learned - a few hammerlocks and a running face smash, before resorting to my good ol' buddy the choke hold. Bob blocked it, however, and also blocked the double axe-handle smash I'd prepared for him. He went to punch me but I avoided it and tried a poke to the eye, but he avodied that. Then he did a terrifying thing - a running shoulder block. During the four hours I'd had to prepare for impact I'd had time for a little nap, but eventually decided to get out of the way. Following that was a decent spell of back-and-forth brawling, seeing us both starting to wane, energy-wise. Unlike at this point in my last match, I was clearly ahead though.

After dropping Bob with a discus punch, I missed a measured knee drop. I was proud of myself, it was quite hard to miss a man the size of Bob. I managed to escape his Shoulder Breaker on my surgically-repaired shoulder however, which was good. Then unexpectedly, the match took a turn for the worse, as Bob... well, I was going to say he 'went huge', but he was already huge. He went... bigger than usual. With a flourish he hit me with successive big moves - including that damn Shoulder Breaker - and then... wellll... sat on me. I defy anyone to kick out of that.

Bob Shrunkle pins Marcel Muller after a Sit-Down Splash (7:57) - *

Another loss, another not very good match. However, I wasn't really prepared for fighting someone stronger and larger than I was. My tactics were all askew. That's my excuse anyway. And seriously, what kind of wrestler sits on people to win matches?

Week Three: Marcel 'The Mauler' Muller vs. Lance Lott

Once again, a completely different opponent. Like Cross, Lott was small and fast, however he was also much better than me technically. I was stronger, of course, but Lance was better in every other way. This would be another tricky proposition. Time to bliksem the little vrotta! Or, er, kick the little low-life's ass, as you'd say.

He started off on the attack, and the first minute was all him, up until I rolled away from a legdrop. My first two moves of the match were choke holds, of which I am not ashamed. Sometimes you've gotta do what you've gotta do. Then I bit his forehead, and the referee got quite angry. So after an elbow drop, I picked him up and started using some more conventional wrestling manoeuvres. My first one, a bodyslam, was countered. I glared angrily at the referee, but managed to break Lott's side headlock and regain control. Following that was a back-and-forth brawl of epic proportions, with neither of us getting more than two or three consecutive moves in, ending with us both looking equally pretty battered. I then yelled at Lott to get to his feet, knowing that I had a chance to put him away with a carefully selected move.

I nailed a Double Underhook Powerbomb, and dropped down to cover him, but he kicked out before two. It was a long shot! I then hit a DDT, followed by a Hammerlock Powerbomb, and Lott was looking in real trouble. Licking my lips, I grabbed him in a binding move, and drove him into the corner. I was a bit knackered though after the effort of the last flourish, and decided to slap him about a bit to make him angry. Unfortunately he took the opportunity to grab me in a side headlock and take me down, ruining my finish.

Lott tried to wear me down with rest holds, but I powered out of a knee bar, and once again drove him into the corner, rugby maul-style. This time, although fatigue had drained my strength somewhat, I wasn't out of breath and followed up immediately with The Big Hit. He wasn't about to ruin my day by kicking out of the first ever use of my finisher. You could say, he was Mullered.

Marcel 'The Mauler' Muller pins Lance Lott after The Big Hit (9:08) - *

My first victory as a professional wrestler! That'll teach the little boys to mess with me! Finally got to hit my finisher too, although I had to do it the long way around.

Week Four: Marcel 'The Mauler' Muller vs. Michel Bernard

A South African against a Frenchman in Australia. Small world... Bernard is a dyed-in-the-wool technician, who has a dazzling array of submission holds but little else. Strength, striking and - oddly - speed are my real advantages here, although I'm not far behind him in grappling. I need to stay on my feet though, or he'll be all over me.

The match started well, with me powering out of a side headlock and cinching in a front facelock. I may or may not have yelled "THAT'S how you do it, jukka!" which may or may not have been a mistake. After slamming him to the mat and missing a legdrop, it was pretty much all Bernard for the next two minutes until I managed to dodge a left hook and bodyslam him back to the mat. After Bernard caught me off guard while I picked him off the mat, it was another three minutes of strikes and wear-down holds before I was able to get back into the match. But then I was back to stay, and started building up a head of steam with strikes and arm-holds. Bernard tried to shake some of the strikes off, but I was much stronger than he thought.

After being warned by the referee for biting Michel's forehead and trying to choke him out (old habits die hard...), I began to bring the big guns out, with some backbreakers and a Knee Plant, before taking a risk with a leaping elbow drop. I connected, luckily. The first time. What can I say? I wasn't thinking straight. He moved out of the way the second time, leaving him free to work me over on the ground until I broke free of a side headlock takedown having regained my footing. He avoided my kick aimed at his midsection, and then wailed on me for a few minutes using a wide variety of strikes which I had trouble dealing with, until eventually I saw my opportunity and broke free of a neckbreaker. A front slam followed by a Piledriver made sure he stayed down.

Time to finish this, but I wasn't in the mood for pissing around, and opted for a straight up Lariat. He didn't get up.

Marcel Muller pinned Michel Bernard after a Lariat Clothesline (13:09) - *

Another disappointing match ratings-wise (mostly because Bernard couldn't hit most of his bigger moves while I was stood up due to my size, so his only high and finisher level moves involved me being on the ground), with a dodgy patch at the end where it could've swung either way. Luckily it swung my way and I avoided a loss. Tactically it was sound, however. I was able to break most of his dangerous stuff, although his backup plan to hit me with every strike he had was annoyingly effective as my speed wasn't THAT great to be able to easily avoid them (and blocking them wasn't really an option), which almost cost me dearly. Still, a win is a win.

End of Month Roundup

Storyline: Failed

Monthly Record: 2-2

Overall Record: 2-2

XP Earned (Total): 415* (415)

Popularity Gained: None

Attributes Gained: None

Skills Increased: None

*(including 'change' from negative attributes bought)

Summary: Not a terrible debut month. The loss to Bob Shrunkle was disappointing as I should've won it really. The loss to Adgee Cross was, it could be said, a result of my trying to have a better match instead of taking advantage of his desperate situation like I perhaps should've. He won't be so lucky next time. As for skills, I figured I'd save up some points before spending on skills as I like to increase in blocks of 50.

He attacked first with a dropkick, but I just ignored it and set about pummeling him with punches and headbutts. He countered a chop, and hit a sunset flip after 1:44. Now that's ambition, folks. There was a decent bit of back-and-forth action for a few minutes, but I got the upper hand with a hammerlock into an atomic drop, and tried to tag out. Buckfield tripped me though, and knocked Dustin off the apron (OOC: a bit of poetic license?) before tagging in Bob Shrunkle.

Shrunkle worked me over completely with several big moves. Bob the Blob is quickly becoming my nemesis. Shhrrruuuunnnkkkkleeeeeeee! Being stuck between those massive flabby legs, with the smell 'n' all... brought back memories of nights out in Jo-burg. Their team was a relative perfect storm; Reed wore me down and let me waste my stamina on him, then tagged out to Big Bad Bob who destroyed what little energy I had left. Dustin never got a look in, due to Reed's interference with the tag.

Nevertheless, onwards and upwards. Dustin was happy to try again the next week in some run-down bar in western Victoria. Seems wherever you go in this world there's a Victoria not far away.

Week Two: Marcel 'The Mauler' Muller & Dustin Down vs. Caleb & Cody Cook

This was more like it. Two tiny jukkas to dominate. Cody was another cruiserweight, Caleb a technician. Both gave away a tonne in terms of strength and striking ability and Caleb wasn't even that fast. If I could stay on my feet, I should be fine here.

Cody started with me in the ring, and his first burst of offence was cut short as I refused to flinch when he waved his fist at me. I think it was meant to be a punch, but I couldn't tell. I showed him what a punch is meant to feel like, and slammed him into the corner to work on him some more. He managed to avoid a shoulder ram, but wasted his time with a sunset flip. 2:14 seconds. I'm beginning to see why Aussies like sport so much; blind optimism. After choking him out for a bit, I tagged out to Dustin, successfully this time.

Dustin continued where I left off, but then missed a leaping elbow drop, allowing Cody to try and tag out. Luckily Dust redeemed himself for a moment by stopping it, but then missed a clotheline and Cody made the tag. Caleb came in and tried to take control with arm wringers and hammerlocks, but Dustin was too fast for his single leg trip, and began putting on a clinic. I swear Caleb didn't get a move in for the next three minutes as Dustin's chops and punches all connected. They weren't doing a lot of damage but they were keeping us on top. He even nailed a headbutt to the groin, which made my day. But then he went for that leaping elbow drop, and missed again.

Caleb gained the advantage back with more technical wear-down holds, then tagged out, but I may have distracted the referee by hurling abuse at him. So he may not have seen it. Sorry Caleb. It was only a few more minutes before Down went for another silly move (a running knee drop) and Caleb managed to roll away and get the tag.

Cody cleaned house, and started nailing Dustin with dropkicks and flipping legdrops (that's legdrops with a flip, as opposed to obscene ones). I was beginning to get worried for us, not that I had much right after my performance in the previous match. But just then Cook missed a top rope legdrop. HOT TAG!

I was back in after my rest, and feeling great. The first thing I did after Cody struggled to his feet was a Discus Clothesline to put him right back on his ass again. Then bit his forehead, which the referee wasn't pleased with. I'd assume Cody wasn't either, as apparently those looks qualify as 'good' in this country and he didn't want to lose them. To ram the point home (literally) I then busted him open with a Bionic Elbow.

He rushed me as I was playing to the crowd though, and went for a dropkick, but I retaliated with a throwdown spinebuster. Annoyingly he managed to wriggle free as I was picking him up and tag out though. Seeing Caleb coming in relatively fresh, I broke out of his arm wringer, decked him with a discus punch and did the same. The first thing Dustin tried was a Leaping Elbow Drop. Caleb moved. I died a little inside. Caleb then started wearing Dustin down with sleepers and headlock takedowns. Often he'd go for a chop block, Dustin would avoid it, but then Dustin's strike would be countered into a side headlock takedown. It was getting worrying. If we were going to lose, I'd rather it was to Cody Cook...

Caleb hit two Spinning Armbreakers in succession, and yelled at the crowd to get them going. The end was nigh, I could feel it. Then bizarrely he decided to waste more time by making a slit-throat gesture, and Dustin recovered. HOT TAG!

I came in like a house... well, sort of smouldering. I was a bit worn out by this stage, but Dustin had done his best to make an opportunity for us. I slammed Caleb to the mat, and yelled for him to get up, picking him up for a Powerbomb pin when he did. Unfortunately, and embarrassingly as I've left more weight behind in a toilet bowl than he has on his entire body, he fell on top of me and I barely managed to kick out in time. In desperation I hit him with a Stump Piledriver. Dragging him to his feet, I drove him into the corner, and one or two of the fans knew where this was heading. BIG HIT! One... two... three!

Marcel Muller pinned Caleb after The Big Hit (23:36) - ***

By far the best match of my career so far, and also the longest. Well, I say 'locked up, I'm not sure McBain knows how.

It was a surprisingly even opening few minutes, with both men givingroughly as good as they got, until McBain got scared after two and a half minutes and tagged out to D'Angelo, so he could use his actual wrestling training against Dustin. He did this very effectively to be fair, as it was just before the five minute mark, having not got a single offensive move in, when Dustin tagged me in.

I had far more success, as I was far too strong for D'Angelo to simply ignore my strikes. He did have a spell of offence, but it was nothing seriously troubling. After nailing him with a DDT, I cockily covered him for the hell of it and he barely kicked out. Spurred on by that I went for a Powerbomb Pin, but he slipped out of it and made the hot tag.

McBain came in hot, and all credit to him, this time he was up for it. Smashing me all over the ring. I broke free of a Face Crusher attempt and tried to tag out, but the psycho stopped me and nailed a Stunning Face Crusher, which knocked me for six. Or, three, as the case may be.

Simon McBain pins Marcel Muller after a Stunning Face Crusher (11:56) - ***

Well that loss came out of nowhere! I was in complete control of D'Angelo until he tagged out, and then McBain came in with invincible mode on and there was no stopping him. Did not see that coming. Disappointing!

Week Four: Marcel 'The Mauler' Muller & Dustin Down vs. Joe 'Z-Man' Zucco & Battlin' Billy

Yet more lightweight goodness. This would be interesting as both my opponents are lightweight brawlers, and while neither can hold a candle to my strength, they're both better strikers and Zucco has the edge technically too.

Still, I was starting on the attack, so there was always a chance. The first four minutes were mostly me. Being a brawler he preferred striking. Being 6'8 and 320lbs, I preferred mostly pretending his strikes never happened. And thus I was able to coast through the early goings without a lot of damage. But then I got cocky, and refused to tag out when I started tiring, determined to not let Dustin in for the 'right' reasons in this match. This cost me, as Zucco avoided a discus clothesline, and tagged out to Billy. To be fair, it was the FOURTH time he'd tried to tag out, so it wasn't all bad. Luckily, after a reversed Irish Whip and a european uppercut on the rebound, I was able to tag out.

With Billy down on the ground from my uppercut, Dustin proceeded to hit a frankly ridiculous number of stomps, elbow and knee drops in quick succession, before picking him up and hitting a shoulder breaker, then a strong charging forearm, taking Billy to the outside. He made it in plenty of time for the count, though as he got to his feet Dustin came charging across the ring with a Lariat. Billy ducked, unfortunately. But given that Dustin had taken one move all match and Billy was at the stage where Dustin was comfortable attempting finishers, I felt good about this.

Predictably, Billy made the hot tag to Zucco, but I'd worked over Zucco previously so he had a long way to go to but Dustin in danger. Zucco made a good attempt however, and it was a good three minutes before he missed a legdrop and let Dustin back into the match. Down and Zucco traded piledrivers, and Down tried tagging me in but the referee's an idiot and missed it. They then tried to trade powerbombs; Zucco slipped out of Down's and hit a pinning version of his own, but Down kicked out just after two. There was a heart-stopping moment when Zucco went for the Winterlude (his finishing Single Arm DDT), but Down slipped out and tagged me in.

At this point I'd recovered enough to be in a commanding position. Zucco was far more tired than me, and breathing hard. He won't have appreciated the first thing I did being a double-underhook powerbomb. Cockily, I tried pinning him afterwards just to show off, he kicked out at the last second (OOC: missed the roll by 5...).

The second thing I did was a Gutwrench Inverted Piledriver. His attempt to kick out of that was... less successful.

Marcel Muller pinned Joe Zucco after a Gutwrench Inverted Piledriver - **

This was a much better match. There was a squiffy moment where Zucco had two attempts at his finisher on Down, but Dustin managed to slip out of them and tag me in. Other than that we never looked like losing.

End of Month Roundup

Storyline: Failed

Monthly Record: 2-2

Overall Record: 4-4

XP Earned (Total): 255 (670)

Popularity Gained: None

Attributes Gained: None

Skills Increased: None

Summary: Another disappointing month. The loss to Bob Shrunkle wasn't terrible, just an unfortunate tag team to go up against. The loss to Simon McBain was infuriating though, as I was in control until BOOM, McBain'd. I don't think I'll be teaming with anyone again for a while, unless someone comes along who I can make a regular team with and have a proper go at being a tag team wrestler. If I manage to score a DIW contract later, Mace Mueller or Gyula Lakatos are obvious candidates.
