WCW 2000:- The Battle for Survival

The Battle for Survival

This is the year is 2000. The world hasn’t ended like many though it would. The millennium bug was more, a Y2J problem, than a J2K problem. Phones were a little less smart. Nokia ruled the market and everyone was hooked on playing Snake and for the last five years on prime time TV two companies have gone head-to-head every Monday Night it what would be named The Monday Night Wars.

WCW Nitro first aired on September 4th 1995 pitting World Championship Wrestling against the World Wrestling Federation form here WCW would become the number one wrestling company in the world. WCW held the advantage during 1996/1997 with the New World Order storyline. WCW blurred the lines between real life and kayfabe.

However nothing last for ever. WWF rallied behind the concept that would be known as the Attitude Era. Using the Vince Russo style of booking often referred to as Crash TV. Matches became shorter and a greater emphasis was put on shock factor. Stone Cold Steve Austin became the biggest name in wrestling and other talents started to shine though in the WWF. The Rock who failed as a face under the name Rocky Maivia was repackaged and destined to become a top star. D-Generation X gave Triple H, The New Age Outlaws and Sean Waltman a previous member of the New World Order a stage in which they could shine and be on the way to stardom.

Meanwhile as fresh faces helped rally the WWF the same names stayed on top of WCW. The only man to break through the glass ceiling and allowed to be a real star was Bill Goldberg. On September 22 1997 Goldberg defeated Hugh Morris to being a winning streak that would take the wrestling world by storm. In mid-1998 both companies were neck and neck trading top spots. It’s here WCW decided to showcase Goldberg VS Hogan for the title instead of PPV. In what would be one of the highest rated segments of the war Goldberg pinning Hogan for his first world title drew a 6.91 rating. But WCW couldn’t keep the advantage.

Things started to go from bad to worse for the company that once claimed to be the clear leaders in sport entertainment. Halloween Havoc 1998 over ran causing WCW to give a replay of the match away for free on Nitro and give refunds to many of the people that purchased the PPV. WCW product began to shift focuses towards Kevin Nash who was rumoured to be the head booker. It was Nash that would end Goldberg streak for the World Title at Starrcade 1998.

With the start of 1999 both companies were pulling rating of 5.0 or higher with over 10 million people tuning in to watch Raw and Nitro every week. January 4th 1999 the night Mick Foley won the WWF Championship for the first time. The evening was set to go WCW way with the World Title match between Goldberg and Kevin Nash, a rematch from Starrcade announced as the main. However leaking the result changed the course of the night in the favour of the WWF. On the same night WCW severed the main event with Hulk Hogan’s returns to the ring. Hogan world face Nash for the world title in what would be known as the Finger Poke of Doom. Hogan would leave the January 4th edition of Nitro World Champion with the reformation of the New World Order that helped perplex WCW to the number one spot back in 1996.

The New World Order didn’t have the desired effect as WCW Ratings started to slide causing the company to go into panic mode. By mid-1999 the NWO split up once more. They booked Megadeth, Chad Brock and Kiss for concerts in an attempt to pull back some of the rating from WWF that was now dominating the rating. All of these segments flopped while WWF went from strength to strength with the rise of the Rock and Sock connection.

WCW turned to Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara the head writers behind WWF television. Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara the Powers That Be failed to recapture the magic they had in WWF and make good on the promises they gave to WCW management. The Powers That Be introduced ideas like Olkahoma, a parody of Jim Ross that mocked his Bell’s palsy.

The ratings didn’t chance and entering December things started to go from bad to worse for Vince Russo and Ed Ferrara. At Starrcade 1999 World Champion Bret “The Hitman” Hart suffered a severe concussion at the hands of Bill Goldberg. Bret Hart wrestled though the concussion and in late December WCW management decided to once again reforms the NWO this time as Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Jeff Jarrett and Bret Hart. It was though the NWO might help bring back some of the views they have lost to the WWF product and were set to feud with Goldberg. However this quickly fell though with Goldberg injuring himself smashing a window.

WCW ends 1999 with the promotion entering both financial and creative lows. The company is distant second place and the atmosphere backstage is poisons. Can WCW rally behind new leadership and turn in tide in the war once more or is the battle for Monday Night a forgone conclusion. This is the year 2000. This is WCW.

Berlyn tells the crowd to remember the name of The Big F’n German Burghardt Felix Geisler. An impressive debt for the big man but lacked head from the crowd due to them not knowing who he was. <strong>E</strong></p><p> </p><p> We cut to the backstage area and see that Kimberly Page is alone backstage. She is watching a replay of the brawl from Thunder on one of the monitors. Scott Steiner appears behind her making her jump. Kimberly cringer as Scott Steiner gets closer into her. The pairing of Malenko and Saturn is booked strongly against their face opponent’s getting off a new of Tag Team moves. Kaz eventually makes the tag to La Parka and they go on the offensive but it doesn’t change the story of the match. The Revolution pick up the victory in this one sided affair when Dean Malenko hits the Texas Cloverleaf on La Parka. La Parka taps out ending the contest. The cruiserweight champion leaves with the victory after David Flairs girlfriend gets involved in the contest. She tries to hit Madusa but misses and nails Flair before Madusa hits him with a German Suplex after 5:25. The Cruiserweight Champion gets the pin fall to end a contest that Madusa should binned like she did with the WWF Womans Championship. <strong>E</strong></p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> We go to another backstage segment with Diamond Dallas Page and Ric Flair. Hall throws the Guitar to Jeff Jarrett while Rhodes is distracting like the referee. Jarrett hits the acoustic equalizer before showing the evidence out of the ring. The two star each other down and Steiner can be heard screaming at DDP. Telling him he is going to show Kimberly what a real man is. DDP gives some stiff right hands to Steiner until he tags out not wanting anything to do with Diamond Dallas Page. DDP Tag Chris Benoit in and we get a preview of the Souled out Man event. From here Hart and Steiner are able to take control isolating Benoit in the corner. They talk about the NWO wanting to weaken him before that title match. After a while Benoit makes the hot tag to DDP who charges in give a Diamond Cutter to both Champion and Steiner. DDP gets a near fall before the NWO once again control the contest. Steiner throws DDP out to the The Outsiders who are trying to inject themselves into this contest like they did the United States title match.
