March Madness

March 1997

Attendance: 2,144

Memphis Coliseum

For the first time in the (brief) history of Southern Championship Class Wrestling, more than just Johnny Lawless came out to represent the Outlaws. This time, Lawless was joined by Floyd ‘F-Bomb’ Bowman in the ring, the latter holding something in his arms hidden by a black cloth. Lawless held a microphone. “Welcome to March Madness,” he began. “Tonight, I have an historic announcement and I’ve brought my good friend – and fellow Outlaw – Floyd Bowman out here to help me make it.” Floyd grabbed the microphone from Lawless. “****in’ right, Johnny!” he spat into the microphone, leading several fans in attendance with small children to cover their innocent ears. “This here,” Floyd held up the black cloth-covered object, “is a big ****in’ deal. I would’ve…” Before Floyd could inform the crowd as to what he would have done to get the currently-covered object, Johnny Lawless snatched the microphone back. “Yeah, umm, thanks Floyd. Anyways, the announcement is this. It’s about time we’ve got a title for the boys to fight for. And so, it’s my pleasure to introduce the Southern Championship Class Heavyweight Title.” A smattering of cheers as Floyd unveiled the heretofore-covered belt (dropping an ‘f-bomb’ or two for good measure). “And it is also my pleasure to announce that this belt will be fought for next month at Fright Night in a match between Whistler and Krusher Karloff!”

The Skinner Brothers(Dukie Skinner/Matty Skinner)/Jesse ‘The Power’ Christian w/Jakki Skinner v. The McAlister Clan (Blackjack McAlister/Whisky Jack McAlister)/‘The Drifter’ Leo Davis w/Boss McAlister

Billy’s Take

The more I see of Jesse Christian, the more I like him. He’s big and strong and has a knack for connecting with the fans. That being said, the real battle here did not involve ‘The Power.’ Instead, the main story here was the McAlisters against the Skinners. Once more, Jakki Skinner’s presence at ringside managed to virtually negate the near-constant shenanigans of her counterpart, Boss McAlister. But Boss did manage to make waves when he pulled out the small cloth bag from his pocket and shook the coins at the Skinners. This sent Matty and Dukie to the floor giving chase. The McAlister boys followed suit and soon all four men were brawling on the outside. This allowed Christian to face Davis one-on-one and that was no contest. Christian powerslammed ‘The Drifter’ and then lifted him into the Tennessee Torture Rack to pick up the win for the Skinners’ team as the brawl continued on the floor.

Winners: The Skinner Brothers/Jesse Christian via Tennessee Torture Rack

Match Rating: D

After the match, and still outside the ring, Boss McAlister managed to slip Blackjack McAlister his loaded bag of coins. Blackjack used them to waffle Dukie Skinner and then Matty Skinner. With both Skinners down, and with the combo of Whisky Jack and the barefoot-hobo Leo Davis able to temporarily hold off Jesse Christian, Blackjack McAlister and Boss McAlister unmercifully pummeled the Skinners. Finally, with both Matty and Dukie busted open, Christian was able to chase off the fiendish McAlisters and check on his allies.

Shane Sneer came out to the ring, with ‘The Straight Shooter’ Joel Bryant in tow. He grabbed a microphone. “The ‘Straight Shooter’ Joel Bryant is the greatest professional athlete in the world today. Michael Jordan? A bum. Your new Tennessee Oilers? Crap. Peyton Manning?” Sneer drew the name of the fan-favorite Tennessee Volunteers quarterback out as he spat it into the mic. “No, this man,” Sneer slapped Bryant on the back, “is the greatest in the world. He has no peer. But the Sneer Corporation is always looking for blue-chip stocks. And tonight, joining ‘The Straight Shooter’ in beating those in-bred shoeless idiots, will be the newest blue-chipper and member of the Sneer Corp – ‘The Mexican Pit Bull’ Rafael Ruiz!”

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/RafaelRuiz_zpsdf21a967.jpg

‘The Mexican Pit Bull’ Rafael Ruiz came to the ring wearing wrestling trunks and a thin black hoodie covering his shaved pate. Ruiz entered the ring, shadow-boxed for a moment, and then threw back the black hood. Sneer stood beside his charges, ummm, sneering, as the Hillbillies made their way down to the ring.

The Hillbillies (Cousin Ezra/Pete the Hillbilly) v. Sneer Corporation (‘The Straight Shooter’ Joel Bryant/‘The Mexican Pit Bull’ Rafael Ruiz) w/Shane Sneer

Billy’s Take

The good-natured Hillbillies came to the ring, slapping hands with fans at ringside and even taking the opportunity for a few photo ops (waiting patiently while patrons wound their yellow cardboard disposable cameras after each shot). Inside the ring, though, the Hillbillies did not fare so well. Bryant and Ruiz formed a devastating duo, pounding the hillbillies from pillar to post. Despite many opportunities to end the match, Sneer refused to allow Ruiz or Bryant to pin their foes, instead inflicting additional pain. Apparently bored of torturing Cousin Ezra and Pete the Hillbilly, Sneer motioned to Bryant to end it. He connected with a One Drop Shot and gained the pinfall for the easy win.

Winners: Sneer Corporation via One Shot Drop

Match Rating: E+

Iron Maiden’s “Run to the Hills” cranked up over the arena’s speaker system while Shane Sneer was leading his charges backstage. And once more, ‘The Straight Shooter’ Joel Bryant and ‘The Arizona Assassin’ Genghis Rahn passed one another in the aisle. Whereas last month, it was Bryant instigating, this time it was Rahn barking something at Sneer’s ‘Straight Shooter’. Bryant spun around and took several steps toward Rahn before being held back by ‘The Mexican Pit Bull’ Rafael Ruiz. Rahn laughed and sprinted to the ring, flailing his ever-present length of steel chain around like a one-man double-dutch-jump-roping exhibition.

‘The Arizona Assassin’ Genghis Rahn v. William Fletcher

Billy’s Take

Rahn’s music had barely cut off when the ‘Arizona Assassin’ jumped poor Mr. Fletcher. Despite random movie-quote spouting from Fletcher (“the Price is Wrong, Bitch – Billy Madison” and “Surprise, Sidney – Scream”), this one was all Rahn. A Rahn to the Hills mercifully ended this after just a few short minutes (and just two movie quotes).

Winner: Genghis Rahn via Rahn to the Hills

Match Rating: D-

---------------------------------------------------------------------

A heavy metal version of the Russian National Anthem played as Sheik Mustafa and Krusher Karloff made their way to the ring. Krusher looked, if possible, even bigger and more pale than normal, veins bulging from his arms and neck. Mustafa held both Karloff’s Soviet flag and his own Iranian flag, waving them enthusiastically as he led his charge to the squared circle.

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii147/ajcrible/Texas%20Wrestling/LeonWilliams_alt2_zps7eedf305.jpg

Before Karloff’s music could end, Leon Williams sprinted down to the ring, attacking the Russian behemoth.

Leon Williams v. Krusher Karloff w/Sheik Mustafa

Billy’s Take:

Despite having a tremendous look and undeniable potential, Karloff is not polished in the ring. As a result, this match was stilted. But it still told the story we wanted it to tell: indestructible Russian monster versus scrappy American underdog. The crowd ate up the match, even if it consisted mostly of rest holds and power moves. In the end, the scrappy underdog succumbed to a powerslam from the big Russian, but only after Sheik Mustafa had run interference.

Winner: Krusher Karloff via powerslam

Match Rating: D+

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Before Krusher Karloff and Sheik Mustafa could attack the downed Leon Williams, Whistler ran down to the ring, brandishing an American flag like a jousting lance. This kept the Axis of Evil at bay long enough for Whistler and ‘The Hardcore American’ Chris Caufield (who’d followed Whistler down to the ring) to get Williams backstage. With the Axis of Evil still at ringside, Whistler took a microphone. “Next month, I’m winning that championship gold and keeping it right here, in the good ol’ USA. But first I’m going to tear through Sadaam’s buddy (he pronounced it Sa-damn) there,” motioning to Sheik Mustafa, “and show that America’s number one and Commies are…” and at that, Whistler spit on the ground like the Sheik had done. This incensed Krusher Karloff, who had to be held back from rushing the ring. Instead, Sheik Mustafa slid in to start the next match.

Whistler v. Sheik Mustafa w/Krusher Karloff

Billy’s Take:

These two seemed to click in the ring and it made for a much better bout than I, or probably anyone in the back, expected. That isn’t to say that it was a technical masterpiece. It wasn’t. Instead, this told a simple story (much like the Williams and Karloff match that preceded it). Patriot face-in-peril against foreign monster. This time, though, the script was flipped as Whistler came out on top following a Rebel Yell on Sheik Mustafa that nearly sent him out of the ring. As the show ended, a loud ‘U…S…A’ chant echoed through the arena, bathing Whistler in all of its patriotic glory.

Winner: Whistler via Rebel Yell

The Hillbillies (Cousin Ezra/Pete the Hillbilly) v. The Bluegrass Boys (The Gambler/‘The Trouble from Tennessee’ Henry Bennett)

Billy’s Take:

The show kicked off with a match between SCCW’s resident good ol’ boys – The Hillbillies – and the newly formed team of The Gambler and Henry Bennett calling themselves the Bluegrass Boys. The Hillbillies are a popular team with the fans – especially the younger ones that sit near ringside. But they are not especially talented inside the squared circle. Neither are The Gambler or Henry Bennett, making this a fairly bland match. The highlights included a few comedy-based double-team moves from the Hillbillies (one included ‘depantsing’ The Gambler, which revealed a pair of Kentucky Wildcat briefs – the crowd booed more for them then at any other point during the match) and, in the end, the faces emerged victorious after Cousin Ezra and Pete the Hillbilly connected with a Do-Si-Do Double Clothesline to pick up the pinfall.

Johnny Lawless came out to the ring distractedly tossing a coin up in the air and catching it. Following closely behind the Outlaw was Whistler, waving an American flag enthusiastically above his head, and Krusher Karloff, accompanied by Sheik Mustafa who held both the old Soviet flag and the Iranian flag in his scarred hands. Lawless took a microphone. “Tonight we make history by crowning the first ever champion of Southern Championship Class Wrestling. It will be one of these two men: Krusher Karloff,” the crowd booed, “or Whistler,” the crowd cheered and broke into a spontaneous ‘U…S…A…’ chant. “But first, we have to determine what sort of match they’ll be fighting in. Krusher Karloff gets to call it.” Johnny Lawless spoke quietly with Karloff for a moment, the veins popping out of the pale-skinned terror’s neck, and then with Whistler. “Karloff has called ‘heads’ – and has determined that if he wins, these men will face off in a Russian Chain Match. But if Whistler wins, it will be a Flag Match.” Lawless flipped the coin in the air and let it land on the mat, all four men in the ring crowding around to see the result. “Heads,” Lawless called out somewhat dejectedly. “It’s heads. So tonight, in this very ring, Whistler and Krusher Karloff will fight for the SCCW Title in a Russian Chain Match!”

Dukie Skinner w/Jakki Skinner v. Blackjack McAlister w/Boss McAlister

Billy’s Take

This was an all-out brawl – which fits Blackjack’s tough guy reputation quite well. Actually, I had a difficult time keeping this one from spilling out into the crowd as the hatred between Dukie and Blackjack was palpable. The match went back-and-forth, with neither man able to gain a decisive advantage. In the end, it was the involvement of Boss McAlister that made the difference. After Dukie connected with a big suplex, Boss waved his handy bag of coins at the Skinner boy. This was enough of a distraction for Blackjack to nearly decapitate Dukie with a clothesline and roll him up for the three count.

As Whisky Jack McAlister and Matty Skinner came out to join their families already in the ring, Jakki Skinner took a microphone. “Had to cheat to win, didn’tcha Boss? Couldn’t fight fair. No, that ain’t the McAlister way, is it? No, your family always cheats…and you’ve always gotten away with it. When y’all stole our family farm, I thought you’d sunk as low as you could get.” Boss McAlister had another microphone and cut off the cut-off-jean-short-wearing Jakki. “Listen here, missy, this don’t involve you. Why don’tcha let men deal with men’s business.” Once more, he shook the coin purse like a matador inciting a bull to charge – which Matty nearly did. “And Poppa McAlister didn’t steal your precious little farm. He bought the damned thing fair and square. Cost him…” now Boss McAlister held up the bag of coins as weighing them “…about thirty pieces of silver. But that ain’t what this is about, is it? This is about you Skinner folk not being as important as us McAlisters. Y’all have always been jealous. You were jealous that we’re smarter than y’all and that we own your grandpappy’s farm. And you’re jealous that Whisky Jack and Blackjack are better wrasslers than Matty and Dukie.” Blackjack McAlister laughed, and under his breath audibly said, “Dukie…heh, heh.” Boss, ignoring his nephew, continued. “I reckon the day is coming when it’s us or y’all ‘cuz Hog’s Hollow, Tennessee ain’t big enough for us both. And,” once more Boss shook the coin bag in front of the incensed Skinners, “we know who always wins when Skinners and McAlisters get to feudin’!” He laughed as I had to keep the four wrestlers involved from attacking each other before the next match could begin.

Matty Skinner w/Jakki Skinner v. Whisky Jack McAlister w/Boss McAlister

Billy’s Take[/b]

Just like the previous match, there was little scientific wrestling on display here. Instead, it was a face-to-face brawl, with both men throwing haymakers and rolling around on the mat gouging, spitting, and kicking. Back and forth it went, with Boss McAlister once again trying to insert himself in the contest. But this time, it was Jakki who turned the tide of the match, spitting at Whisky Jack as he stood near the ropes. This distracted Whisky Jack just enough to allow Matty to roll him up for the three count.

Winner: Matty Skinner via pinfall

After clearing the McAlisters and Skinners out of the ring, the Outlaw representative Johnny Lawless came down to the ring with a microphone. The ‘Silver Fox’ – as we’d dubbed Lawless for his dirty-old-man skirt-chasing – asked that Genghis Rahn join him in the squared circle. Rahn, wearing black trunks, his trademark furry boots, and waving his ever-present steel chain above his head, stalked down to the ring, a wild look in his eyes. “Genghis Rahn, you seem to have a problem with Joel Bryant. Can you tell me what has gone on between the two of you to start this rivalry?” Rahn surprised many of the fans in attendance by speaking in a very eloquent, clear manner – totally at odds with his wildman appearance and demeanor. “Joel Bryant used to be a decent man,” Rahn began. “Conscientious inside the ring: a real professional. But since that sniveling weasel Shane Sneer got his hooks in him, Bryant has changed. And not for the better. Now he’s a man without honor or respect. But he will respect me. Mark my words. He…will…respect…me…” Rahn tossed away the microphone and stomped around the ring, swinging his steel chain above his head and forcing Lawless to beat a hasty retreat to the floor.

‘The Arizona Assassin’ Genghis Rahn v. ‘The Mexican Pit Bull’ Rafael Ruiz w/Shane Sneer

Billy’s Take:

Rafael Ruiz came out first and Rahn’s focus immediately went to the ‘Mexican Pit Bull.’ But when Sneer emerged behind his charge, Rahn began slavering and foaming at the mouth. I had to make Rahn put away the chain so that Ruiz could get in the ring and the match could begin. This was an all-out brawl, with both Rahn and Ruiz comfortable throwing (and taking) haymakers. But in the end, it was Rahn emerging victorious with a vicious Rahn to the Hills on Ruiz.

As a spent Genghis Rahn returned backstage, he was met once more by ‘The Straight Shooter’ Joel Bryant coming out to the ring. Rahn charged Bryant, sending the stunned Bryant into the guardrail between the entrance ramp and fans seated near ringside. Rahn followed this up with a series of vicious rights and then grabbed his chain, which had fallen to the ground, and swung it at Bryant, who backed up – crabwalk-style – just out of range of Rahn’s attack. With Rahn’s attention fully on Bryant, ‘The Mexican Pit Bull’ Rafael Ruiz recovered enough from the Rahn to the Hills to sneak up behind Rahn and attack the Arizona Assassin. It took a number of security guards to break up the melee as Rahn was bleeding from the forehead by the time the brawl ended.

‘The Hardcore American’ Chris Caulfield v. ‘The Straight Shooter’ Joel Bryant w/Shane Sneer

Billy’s Take:

With Bryant already in the ring, and admittedly woozy from Rahn’s earlier attack, the ‘Hardcore American’ Chris Caulfield came down to the ring, tossing his red, white, and blue bandana to a young fan sitting at ringside. Inside the ring, this was far more closely contested than Bryant’s previous matches in SCCW. At one point, Caulfield connected with a DDT that put Bryant down for a two count. But ultimately, Bryant prevailed after hitting Caulfield with a One Shot Drop.

Southern Championship Class Wrestling Heavyweight Title Match

Russian Chain Match

Whistler v. Krusher Karloff w/Sheik Mustafa

Billy’s Take:

This was a brutal match, the first in SCCW’s brief history to draw blood as Karloff opened up Whistler early in the contest by using the chain on his forehead. The two brawled around the ring and each used the chain to his advantage. In the end, Krusher Karloff was simply too powerful, whipping Whistler toward him and connecting with a powerslam onto the steel chain to secure the win and the title.

Winner and NEW SCCW Heavyweight Champion: Krusher Karloff via pinfall

Match Rating: D+

As medics checked on the bloodied Whistler, Krusher Karloff stood in the center of the ring, holding the title belt aloft while Sheik Mustafa looked on approvingly.

Overall: C-

While I do not particularly like the Hillbillies, I think they serve a purpose as an experienced 'fun' team that can easily absorb losses to put over more deserving duos.
