WCW 1998: Reaching Beyond The Starrs

Recommended Posts

That grade surprised the heck out of me. I wish I had looked at the Dirt Sheet notes for it, but they had great chemistry. Owen's average US pop is around 77-78 while Buff's is right around 66. I'm guessing the great chemistry plus gimmick bonuses and Owen's all around skill elevated the match. Buff is actually one of my pet projects. It doesn't seem like it now because he's losing a lot, but I'd really like to turn him into a solid worker.

Last Man Standing Match for the WCW United States Championship

Curt Hennig Rick Rude vs Diamond Dallas Page© w/Kimberly Page

Last month at Starrcade, DDP won his second singles title in WCW by pinning Curt Hennig for the WCW United States Championship. Hennig and Page have been at each other's throats ever since. Hennig and his manager Rick Rude have even resorted to getting DDP's wife; Kimberly; involved by putting her in harm's way to distract Page. One of Interim-President JJ Dillon's last acts was making this a Last Man Standing Match to insure a true winner and an end to this feud. Will DDP retain the championship or will Curt Hennig reclaim the championship?

Fatal Fourway for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship

Chavo Guerrero Jr vs Chris Jericho vs Eddy Guerrero vs Rey Mysterio Jr©

At Starrcade, Rey Mysterio Jr won a six way ladder match to lay claim to the WCW Cruiserweight Championship. In the weeks since then, he has had to deal with former champion Eddy Guerrero, new number one contender Chris Jericho, and Eddy's nephew Chavo Guerrero Jr. The match was originally scheduled to be a singles confrontation between Chris Jericho and Rey Mysterio Jr, but Eddy used his rematch clause and negotiating ability to work himself and Chavo into the match making it a fatal fourway. Can Rey fight off two crafty Guerreros and the Lion Heart or will Rey suffer a short title reign?

WCW Television Championship Match

Mystery Opponent vs Saturn© w/Raven

While this match has little build to it, it features an air of uncertainty as Saturn has no idea who his opponent is. Saturn has been a fighting champion in his almost two month reign by defending the championship on almost every episode of WCW Saturday Night, but he usually has time to prepare for his opponents. Who is JJ Dillon's mystery contender? The only clue JJ left us with is that it's a tag team wrestler attempting to go solo.

The Hart Brothers vs The Outsiders

Bret Hart made his in ring debut for WCW against Scott Hall at last month's Starrcade and picked up the victory. His victory ensured that WCW regained control of Monday Nitro and when Bischoff instructed Nash and Hall to take Bret out, his younger brother came through the audience to make the save. Both Hall and Nash have made no secret that they don't want the Hart family in WCW and have made it very clear that they're going to do everything they can to take out Owen and Bret.

WCW World Tag Team Championship Match

The Steiner Brothers w/Ted DiBiase vs The Horsemen w/Ric Flair

The recently reunited Horsemen aren't quite at full strength, but Benoit and Malenko have been on quite a roll recently. These two technical masters have been destroying opponents left and right while the powerhouse tandem of the Steiners have been quite literally throwing competition out of the ring. Benoit and Malenko took Rick and Scott to time limit draws in singles action, but this match has no time limit. Since all four men are fan favorites, which team will the crowd support?

Number One Contender Match for WCW Women's Championship

Nora Greenwald vs Tina Ferrari

The newly created Women's Division has been relatively quiet since it's inception, but Tina and Nora have been seen arguing and brawling in the back. JJ Dillon has booked the two in a match in order to decide on a number one contender for Jackie Moore's Women's Championship.

Triple Threat for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship

Hollywood Hulk Hogan vs Randy Savage w/Elizabeth vs Sting©

Sting won the World Championship at Starrcade from Hollywood Hulk Hogan in what many are considering the biggest main event in WCW history. Hogan demanded his rematch at Souled Out and Sting agreed to meet him again. Then the mind games began. Sting took advantage of the nWo's in-fighting by pitting Randy Savage's desire for championship gold against Hogan's selfishness. Hogan has said that if Savage or Sting wins the match then Savage is out of the New World Order. Will Savage help Hogan reclaim the World Heavyweight Championship, will Savage win the championship himself, or will it be all for naught and Sting retains?
