In Your House:Cold Day in Hell Preview

Tag Match

Ahmed Johnson & ??? vs. The Nation of Domination ( Faarooq & Rocky Maivia) w/Kama Mustapha & D’Lo Brown

After chasing Faarooq and his Nation of Domination, Ahmed Johnson finally got him in a singles match at WrestleMania only to have his ally, young blue chipper Rocky Maivia, turn on him. Tonight, the Pearl River Powerhouse must find a partner to take on his nemesis and his betrayer in the ring.

Singles Match for Intercontinental Title

Bam Bam Bigelow© vs. Triple H w/ Sable

Triple H held the Intercontinental strap since last October, turning away challenger after challenger. But this week on Raw, in the aftermath of a heinous assault on former President of the WWF Gorilla Monsoon, new Commissioner Sgt. Slaughter booked Triple H to defend his belt against a mystery opponent. That opponent turned out to be none other than Asbury Park’s native son Bam Bam Bigelow. The 390 lb “Beast from the East”, making his return to the WWF after almost 18 months, won the match and the belt. Tonight, Triple H invokes his rematch clause.

Tag Match

The Golden Gloves(Marc Mero & Bart Gunn) vs. The Masked Destroyers(Super Destroyer & Mega Destroyer) w/ Jim Cornette

The Louisville Lip has a gift for getting under people’s skin, and he’s done so with both Bart Gunn and Marc Mero. Now these former boxers take on Camp Cornette’s masked mavens of mayhem, The Destroyers. The Golden Gloves give away a substantial edge in size, but they certainly make up for it in heart. Tonight, we find out if that’s enough.

Tag Match for the Tag Team Titles

Harlem Knights(Mabel & Morris Knight) vs. The Machines(Flash Funk & Leif Cassidy)©

The unconventional team of Flash Funk and Leif Cassidy underwent a veritable Cinderella story when they won the vacant Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania. Will the clock strike midnight for the Machines when they have to take on the Harlem Knights? The 775lb Nation of Domination team certainly believe it will.

Singles Match (Career vs. Manager)

Brian Pillman vs. Goldust w/ Marlena

The Loose Cannon has been at war with the Bizarre One since stabbing the Golden Gladiator during a match against Steve Austin. Since then, these two masters of mind games have taken every opportunity to strike at each other. Tonight they finally meet one on one, with Brian Pillman wagering his career against Goldust’s manager, Marlena. Will Brian Pillman leave the arena with Goldust’s manager, or just leave the arena for good?

Tag Match

The Godwinns(Henry & Phineas Godwinn) w/ Terry Gordy vs. The Legion of Doom(Animal & Hawk) w/ Dok Hendrix

The Godwinns have been on a cold streak for months now, and their attempt to change that ended unsuccessfully when they faced the returning Legion of Doom. Dok Hendrix suggested that turning their backs on the fans was the cause of this losing streak, while Terry Gordy disagreed emphatically. Tonight these two former running buddies will test their theories against each other, when The Godwinns and the LOD have a rematch.

Singles Match

Owen Hart vs. Vader

The Hart Family has been at war with Paul Bearer’s Army of Darkness since the beginning of the year. At WrestleMania, Owen Hart won a battle in that war in a tag match against the Masters of Disaster. But he didn’t score that win against the legal man in the match. To rectify that injustice, WWF officials booked Owen in a singles match against the man he should have been in the ring with, the Mastodon Vader. Can the youngest member of the Hart Family defeat Bearer’s monster, or will the 450 pounder prove to be to much?

Singles Match

Bret Hart vs. Bobby Duncum, Jr.

Bret Hart has been vocal about his desire to get back into the World Title picture, stating repeatedly his belief that the WWF is meant to be about competition between athletes, not personal grudges. Putting this belief into action, The Hit Man offered an open challenge to anyone in the locker room to engage in just such a contest with him at In Your House. Answering that challenge is the 6‘6“, 300 lb cowboy, Bobby Duncum, Jr. How will the powerful Texan fare against the experienced former World Champ?

Singles Match for WWF World Title

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker©

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin has been tearing through the WWF after winning the King of the Ring tournament last year. Tonight he faces his biggest challenge since then, as he takes on the Phenom of the WWF, WWF World Heavyweight Champion The Undertaker. Can the Texas Rattlesnake defeat the Demon from Death Valley, or will Austin 3:16 stand for Rest In Peace?

Ahmed & ??? - mystery partners can tend to skew things in the favor of the surprise

Triple H - 3H takes back the belt, giving the new DX a solid piece of gold.

Golden Gloves - TMDs need to unmask or disappear, because they just scream jobbers. Cornette shouldn't be tied down to such losers.

The Machines - No end to the great Machines yet.

Brian Pillman - SO MUCH YES.

The Legion of Doom - Gordy is definitely getting his hands on Dok during this one, though. Especially liking the Freebirds feud.

Vader - Vader vs. Undertaker in the future will be a damn good one.

Sunday April 20, 1997

Carrier Dome Syracuse, NY 35,745 in attendance 3.54 Buy Rate

Announce Team:Jim Ross, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Vince McMahon

89

Free-For-All

D-Generation X arrives at the Carrier Dome, and Commissioner Slaughter is waiting for them. He tells Michaels that he has the night off tonight, and that he’s barred from the building. There will be no interference by D-X in tonight’s title matches.

78

Singles Match

Jimmy Cicero vs. Rikishi Fatu

The One Man Samoan Swat Team absolutely destroys Cicero tonight. He toys with him for a while, pounding him with chops and head butts, before sending him to the mat with a Samoan Drop and then finishing him with a splash from the second turnbuckle.

Fatu pins Cicero after a Samoan Splash 4:27

40

Jimmy Cicero debuts Old School Face gimmick 27

Sunny is backstage with Ahmed Johnson, and she asks if he managed to find a partner for his match with the Nation tonight. He says that only one man is strong enough to face the Nation with him, and that’s the British Bulldog, Davey Boy Smith. The Bulldog joins them, and says that, since his regular partner had a singles match tonight, he was happy to help Ahmed out.

61

Tag Match

The Headbangers vs. PG 13

Two brash young teams battle it out in a fairly tight contest, until Mosh catches JC Ice with a knee to the back from the outside behind the referee’s back. Thrasher tags him in, and they get the three count after a Stage Dive.

Mosh pins JC Ice after a Stage Dive 6:32

44

The cameras are outside the building, showing the last of the fans filing their way into the arena before the official start to the show. Shawn Michaels can be seen playing up to the fans, and he eventually convinces one of them to sell him a scalped ticket. When he sees the cameras, he walks toward the arena entrance, waves the ticket at the camera, and says, “See you inside, Sarge!”

76

Tag Match

Abuddah Singh & Rob Conway vs. The New Blackjacks

The New Blackjacks take advantage of their time on the Free-For-All to completely dominate the makeshift team of Singh and Conway. They take a few minutes each to showcase their abilities, both singly and as a team, then Bradshaw nails Conway with a Lariat that practically knocks him out of his boots.

Blackjack Bradshaw pins Rob Conway after a Lariat 5:26

51

As the Free-For-All reaches its closing seconds, and Jim Ross exhorts the audience to order now while there’s still time, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin leaves his locker room to make his way to the ring.

76

Main Show

Austin is in the ring, pacing back and forth, when the show opens. “Undertaker, tonight that WWF title is finally going around the waist of the toughest sumbitch in the WWF. You think everybody’s afraid of the Dead Man, but Stone Cold ain’t scared of nothing. And tonight, after I open up a can of whoop-ass on you, I’m sending your ass back to the graveyard or wherever the hell you go when you ain’t in the ring. And that’s the bottom line, ‘cause Stone Cold said so!”

91

Tag Match

Ahmed Johnson & Davey Boy Smith vs. The Nation(Faarooq & Rocky Maivia) w/Kama Mustapha & D‘Lo Brown

In the early going, this match is an even affair, with frequent tags from both sides. Rocky Maivia absolutely refuses to stay in the ring with Ahmed Johnson, and this clearly frustrates the Pearl River Powerhouse. Midway through the match, the Nation is able to isolate the Bulldog, and they use that frustration to their advantage. Any time Davey Boy tries to make his way to tag Ahmed, Maivia taunts Johnson enough to get him to charge into the ring. While the referee forces Ahmed back to his corner, the Nation is able to double team the Bulldog. This pattern goes on for about five minutes before Davey Boy is able to duck a Faarooq clothesline and spring off the ropes with one of his own. This sends both competitors crashing to the mat. The crowd is clearly behind The Bulldog as both men drag themselves to their corners, and Bulldog is able to make the tag first. Ahmed enters the ring filled with righteous fury, and as Faarooq dives for Maivia’s outstretched hand, Rocky pulls back from the tag, dropping off the ring apron and clutching his shoulder! Faarooq, still slightly dazed from his collision with Davey Boy, looks down at his teammate with a combination of surprise and annoyance. He starts hollering down at Maivia, who is walking back up the entrance ramp wile still clutching his arm. When Faarooq turns back to the ring, Ahmed Johnson is waiting to blast him with a big clothesline. He follows this up with a Pearl River Plunge.

Ahmed Johnson pins Faarooq after a Pearl River Plunge 11:53

76

Triple H is backstage with Sable at his side. “Bigelow, the only reason you have my title is because that washed-up GI Joe, Commissioner Slaughter, rigged our match for you. Well, tonight Sarge is gonna be in the back playing with his Kung-Fu Grip while I slap those stupid tattoos off your head. My Intercontinental belt is coming back where it belongs, and if you’re not down with that, I’ve got two words for you: Suck it!”

56

Singles Match for the Intercontinental Title

Bam Bam Bigelow© vs. Triple H w/ Sable

Both men come out swinging before the bell even rings, and Triple H takes control pretty early on when he rakes Bigelow’s eyes before the champion can use his power to his advantage. From there, Triple H relies on cheap tactics to the Beast from the East off his feet. Soon, though, the big man is able to catch Helmsley when he tries for a flying knee, and drives the challenger to the mat with a power slam. From there, Bigelow is relentless, and even an attempt by Sable to interfere backfires. She slides a chair into the ring, then jumps onto the apron to distract the ref. But when Triple H goes to swing the chair, Bigelow grabs it and slams it back into Helmsley‘s face. He slides the chair out of the ring as Sable flips out, then picks triple H up and hits a Greetings From Asbury Park to retain the title.

Bam Bam Bigelow pins Triple H after a Greetings From Asbury Park 12:25

74

The Undertaker is backstage. “Austin. You claim to be the toughest man in the WWF. Tonight, you get the chance to prove it. You get the chance to compete for the WWF Title. But to do that, you have to face down the Pale Rider himself. When you stare across the ring at The Undertaker, when you feel the cold hand of Death gripping your throat, that’s when you learn what fear is all about. That’s when you find out that all things are equal before the reaper. That’s when you Rest… in Peace.”

86

Tag Match

Golden Gloves(Bart Gunn & Marc Mero) vs. The Masked Destroyers w/Jim Cornette

The Masked Destroyers put up a solid fight, using their size to their advantage whenever they can, but there is clear tension in Camp Cornette despite the confidence Jim Cornette showed leading up to this match. When Mero and Gunn take control of the match, Cornette is livid at ringside, jumping up and swinging his tennis racket while he shouts at the Destroyers. A miscommunication between Cornette and Super Destroyer winds up spelling the end. While the referee is forcing Mega Destroyer out of the ring after a tag and Gunn is down, Cornette gestures for Super Destroyer to take the racket. He takes to long to do so, and turns back to the ring, racket in hand, just in time for the referee to see him. He takes the tennis racket away from the masked man, who is trying to protest his innocence, which gives Bart Gunn time to recover. He catches Super Destroyer with a Discus Punch that dims the big man’s lights, then staggers over to make his own tag. Mero climbs to the top turnbuckle, and executes a Merosault to get the win.

MarcMero pins Super Destroyer after a Merosault 9:05

66

Sunny is backstage with the Tag Team Champions, The Machines. They warn the Harlem Knights that tonight isn’t going to be an ambush on The Brother Love Show. Tonight they have to step into the ring with the WWF Tag Team Champions. “That means you’re facing the best tag team in the world today.”

54

Tag Match for the WWF Tag Team Championship

Harlem Knights(Mabel & Morris Knight) vs. The Machines(Flash Funk & Leif Cassidy)©

The Harlem Knights start strong, relying on Mabel Knight’s immense size advantage to throw the champions around. The champions fight back hard, but any time they get any traction, Morris tags Mabel in to overpower them. Near the end of the match, Mabel whips Cassidy into the corner and comes charging in for an Avalanche. But Leif springs out of the corner with a dropkick to the behemoth’s knee, sending him stumbling face-first into the middle turnbuckle. Leif then rolls onto the ring apron and sails back over the top rope, hitting Mabel with a Slingshot Leg Drop and driving his face back into the buckle. As he staggers to his feet, Leif connects with a dropkick, leaving him laying in the middle of the ring. A tag to Flash Funk leads to Funk flying off the Topturnbuckle with a Funky Flash Splash for the pinfall.

Flash Funk pins Mabel Knight after a Funky Flash Splash 6:56

62

Pillman is backstage, with a crazed gleam in his eye and a leer on his face. “Tonight is going to be a gooood night for the Loose Cannon. First, I’m getting in the ring with Goldust, and I’m pinning that face painted goofball in front of everybody in the world who ordered In Your House. Then I’m taking Marlena back to my hotel room and pinning her ….” The rest of his promo gets bleeped, and the camera cuts away as he begins to make…animated gestures that seem to indicate his intentions for the night.

70

Singles Match

Brian Pillman vs. Goldust

This is a pier six brawl, with both men doing their best to tear each other to pieces. Near the end of the match, Pillman goes for an Irish Whip to the corner, but Goldust is able to reverse it, sandwiching the ref between Pillman and the corner. Goldust is on Pillman in an instant, knocking the staggered Loose Cannon to the mat with a series of hard punches. Marlena, sensing an opening for some payback, calls her man over and slides a steel chair in for him. Goldust takes the chair with smile, and advances on Pillman. But the Loose Cannon was playing possum, and greets the Bizarre One with a low blow before he can swing the chair. He climbs to the middle turnbuckle and waits for Goldust to regain his feet, then comes flying off with a Corkscrew-Loose DDT right onto the chair. He slides the chair out, smirks at Marlena, then rouses the referee to make the 3 count.

Brian Pillman pins Goldust after a Corkscrew-Loose DDT 15:48

80

Marlena climbs in the ring, checking on the unconscious Goldust. Brian Pillman stares at them cackling, and then grabs her by the arm. She pulls away, and they get into a heated discussion. Finally, Pillman points toward the entrance ramp, and Marlena reluctantly leaves with him, glancing over her shoulder at Goldust, who still hasn’t gotten up.

60

Tag Match

The Godwinns w/ Terry Gordy vs. The Legion of Doom w/ Dok Hendrix

The Godwinns come into this match hard, with something to prove. Their new association with Terry Gordy seems to bearing fruit, as they go toe-to-toe with the veteran LOD with an intensity they haven’t shown in some time. There’s also a fair share of action at ringside, as Hendrix and Gordy get into shoving matches more then once.

Eventually the referee loses control, as Gordy and Hendrix both enter the ring and get into a confrontation. Hendrix slaps Gordy hard, right in the face. Gordy responds by grabbing him by the jacket and shaking him like a terrier with a rat, nearly ripping the jacket off his back and throwing him into the corner. The referee forces Gordy out of the ring while Animal helps Dok Hendrix to his feet. Hendrix then nails an unsuspecting Animal right between the eyes with a set of brass knuckles! As Animal drops to the ground, blood pouring down his face, we can see that, under his jacket, Hendrix is wearing a faded old Lynyrd Skynyrd T-shirt. He leaces the ring, grabbing Hawk’s ankle to keep him from intervening when Phineas Godwinn pins Animal.

Phineas Godwinn pins Animal after Dok Hendrix hits him with Brass Knuckles 11:55

72

Dok Hendrix turn was a complete success

Gordy gets back in the ring, joining Hendrix and the Godwinns. All four raise their arms in victory while Hawk checks on Animal ,who’s bleeding from the Knuckle shot. Hendrix then directs Gordy and the Godwinns to continue the assault. They attack Hawk, beating him down so that Henry can hit him with a Slop Drop, as Phineas does the same to Animal. The Godwinns then pick up Hawk and hold him so Gordy can deliver a Brass Knuckle blow to the forehead of his own. The new team leaves the LOD laying bloody in the ring.

51

Paul Bearer is backstage with Vader, who is pounding his chest and snorting like a bull, clearly looking forward to his match with Owen Hart. “Tonight we will see just how much damage the human body can withstand, oh yes! The Mastodon is feared the world over, Owen. When wrestlers come to the arena and find out they have to face Vader, they slink out the back of the building to avoid their match! And you’ve made him angry, oh yes you have, and tonight there will be a reckoning. Last time you made Vader angry, it cost you the Tag Team titles and 6 weeks of your career. What do you think tonight will cost you, Owen?”

79

Singles Match

Owen Hart vs. Vader

Owen Hart takes the fight to Vader right from the start, hitting the Mastodon with a flurry of chops, European uppercuts, and kicks to the leg. But all any of this seems to do is make him angrier. Every time Owen starts to get traction, a clubbing blow from Vader drops him like a sack of dirt. The 450 lb. monster hurls him around the ring, slamming him to the mat and stomping away at him. Owen finally catches a break when he is able to pull himself out of the corner seconds before Vader crashes into it with an Avalanche that would have ended the match.

As Vader staggers out of the corner, Owen is waiting for him with a dropkick that leaves him reeling. Owen hits him with some more kicks to the thigh, then connects with another dropkick. Two more dropkicks finally take the big man off his feet for the first time in the match. Hart is revitalized, raining down elbow and knee drops on Vader, keeping him from regaining his feet. He then grabs Vader’s legs and begins trying to turn him over into a Sharpshooter. The struggle goes on for over half a minute, with Vader keeping his arms splayed out to keep Hart from locking in the hold. But unfortunately, Owen dips his head to low during the struggle, getting in reach of Vader’s big hands. He grabs Owen by the back of the head with one hand, and delivers a crushing blow to the temple with the other.

Owen slumps to the ground, and Vader gets to his feet. He picks Hart up and sends him back down hard with a Release Powerbomb. Vader goes for the pin, but yanks Owen up at the last instant, not done with his punishment. As the referee admonishes him, he drags Owen over to the corner, and crushes him with a Vader Bomb. After that, the three count is academic.

Vader pins Owen Hart after a Vader Bomb 10:35

85

Bobby Duncum, Jr. is in the ring waiting for his open challenge match with Bret Hart. When the Hit Man’s music plays, however, he doesn’t show. We cut to the cameras backstage, and after searching for a few moments, we see him being brutally assaulted by Mankind! The deranged superstar slams Hart through a table backstage, then picks him up out of the wreckage to hurl him into a wall. He then picks up a broken piece of the table and begins smashing it into the fallen Hit Man’s back before he delivers a Running Elbow to the small of his back while holding the table fragment. Finally officials are able to separate them.

92

Stone Cold Steve Austin makes his way down to the ring for his Title match with the Undertaker. As he strides around the ring, the camera pans over the audience, focusing on Shawn Michaels in the front row. The Heartbreak Kid sees that he’s on camera and he waves his ticket stub with a smirk, then holds up a souvenir foam tombstone before mouthing “Go, Undertaker!” The the lights dim, and The Undertaker enters the arena, shoots a glare at Michaels, then focuses on his challenger.

Singles Match for the WWF World Title

”Stone Cold“ Steve Austin vs. The Undertaker©

Austin and The Undertaker start this match nose to nose. Austin is talking trash, while the Undertaker stares emotionlessly back at him. Then Austin hit’s the champ with a big right hand, staggering him back a half-step. Undertaker retaliates, and the two men trade blows in the center of the ring. The fight spills all over the ring, with neither man able to keep the advantage for long. Each man is able to score several near-falls, and each gets the opportunity to showcase their signature moves.

Austin finally takes the Undertaker down with a Thesz Press, and starts to talk trash as the Phenom lays there. Then, out of nowhere, The Undertaker’s eyes open and he grabs The Rattlesnake around the throat. He stands, ready to Chokeslam the challenger, when Michaels hops the barricade at ringside and climbs onto the ring apron. The Undertaker lets go of Austin, and he and the ref both turn their attention to Michaels. This also means that neither man sees Triple H come charging down from the back with a steel chair in his hand. As Helmsley closes in on the ring, Austin spins the Undertaker around and boots him in the stomach, going for a Stunner. But The Dead Man is able to counter by shoving Austin away, into the ropes and into Helmsley, who was standing on the apron ready to climb in the ring. Helmsley goes sailing to the floor, and Austin staggers back, into a Chokeslam. Undertaker turns away from Austin and knocks HBK off the ring apron with a Big Boot. He then picks Austin up, and puts him back down with a Tombstone Piledriver.

The Undertaker is in the center of the ring, and he stares down at Shawn Michaels, who is being escorted to the back by officials, neither one willing to break the staredown.
