WWF 1995: Heyman vs. Bischoff

Recommended Posts

It's the first Monday of September 1995. Ted Turner's World Championship Wrestling has stepped up to the plate and are attempting to hit a home run out of the park by going head to head with the World Wrestling Federations Monday Night RAW. WCW has an unlimited amount of money, time slots on two of cable televisions biggest networks and the three biggest stars in wrestling history all on one roster (Ric Flair, Randy Savage and Hulk Hogan). The story typically goes that Sting approaches Eric Bischoff about reaching out to Lex Luger in August of 1995. Luger has been wrestling for WWF without a contract and has Vince McMahon at his word. McMahon believes it, Luger jumps ship to WCW on Monday Nitro and the war begins.

That's the TYPICAL story. This story goes much different. It starts on the night that Shane Douglas wins the NWA World Heavyweight Championship and DOESN'T throw the belt to the ground. Shane respects the lineage of his wrestling forefathers, carries the NWA Championship with meaning and tradition and then completely shuts down Eastern Championship Wrestling in August of 1995 due to bankruptcy because of poor attendance and Tod Gordon forcing Paul Heyman to play it safe with a more traditional wrestling product. The revolution of ECW never happening would not end up as bad as one might think for Paul Heyman.

Heyman (Being wrestling's most charming smooth talker) had been in talks with Vince McMahon about coming onto the creative team since the middle of 1994. Vince knew Paul could be a handful to work with but he also knew he could be a valuable secret weapon for the WWF if the time ever arose. Heyman approached Vince upon the news breaking of the debut of Monday Night Nitro but Vince still wasn't convinced that Heyman would be needed just yet... Until word (Like it somehow always does in wrestling) came to Heyman that Lex Luger had been offered a guaranteed contract by World Championship Wrestling. Heyman immidiately broke the news to Vince who immidiately counter offered WCW with the WWF's first guaranteed contract.

Vince knew his product was growing stale and that something needed to be done to fix it. Even with Luger locked into a guaranteed money deal... It could only be a matter of time before Bret Hart, Shawn Michaels, Diesel or Razor Ramon would request something similar before perhaps jumping ship to greener pastures in WCW. 1995 is historicaly regarded as one of the worst years in WWF history as far as ticket sales, TV Ratings and PPV buy rates thank to the abysmal run of Diesel as champion. War was clearly on the horizon with World Championship Wrestling in the same time slot as the WWF on Monday Nights using some of the biggest stars WWF had created against itself. It wasn 't time for Vince to bring in new characters like a Dean or a Garbage Man. The time had arrived for Vince to use that secret weapon and bring Paul Heyman to the creative team. Starting the week that Bischoff would debut Monday Night Nitro... Paul Heyman would take control of Monday Night RAW.
