Save WCW! (2000)

Recommended Posts

It's a brand new year, but no one is celebrating behind the scenes of WCW. Terrible contracts and even worse booking has resulted in the company finding itself in a downward spiral after beating rival WWF for over a year. Many wonder how much longer the company can stay upright.

Enter former Horseman Arn Anderson.

To the surprise of, well, everyone...Anderson stepped up and purchased World Championship Wrestling alongside some unnamed partners. The Enforcer invested heavily in the move. A man who spent most of his career in the company was damned to just sit back and watch it sink.

**********

A long time veteran of EWR, this is my first real venture into TEW (aside from some minor puttering with '05). Looking at the great saves out there, I got the idea to legitimately try to turn WCW around at a time when that was pretty much impossible to do. I have no idea if I'll make it, but I've got some ideas and surprises to certainly try.

WCW Monday Nitro: W1 January 2000

Nitro opens with a video package recapping Thunder, where the nWo reformed with Jeff Jarrett, The Outsiders, and Bret Hart. The announcers talk about the situation, wondering who will be able to stop them, before switching to the action on the ring.

Rick Steiner defeated Ice Train in 7:48. (Rated D-)

The nWo are backstage bragging about their reunion. Scott Steiner is seen with the rest of the group, bringing membership to five.

Tylene Buck announces a tournament to crown a new Cruiserweight Champion after the belt was vacated. The participants are Lenny Lane, Juventud Guerrera, Chavo Guerrero Jr. , Disco Inferno, Evan Karagias, Lash LeRoux, Berlyn, and newly signed Minoru Tanaka (**note** this is basically the Bound For Glory series)

An interview backstage with Mean Gene Okerlund talking with Revolution, who basically put the world on notice that 2000 is going to be their year.

Shane Douglas defeated Norman Smiley in 6:04 (Rated D)

We see a graphic on the screen as the announcers discuss tonight's Main Event, the number one contender match between Chris Benoit and Ric Flair.

Juventud Guerrera defeated Berlyn and Lenny Lane in the first match of the Cruiserweight series in 9:14. The Juice earns 3 points with the win. (Rated E+)

Ric Flair is backstage and talks about the respect he has for Benoit, but that tonight is about getting a shot at the champ at Souled Out.

It's back to the announcers who talk about the 8-team tournament to fill the vacant Tag Team Championships. Schiavone picks Harlem Heat to win it, Heenan goes with Malenko/Saturn, while Scott Hudson thinks an underdog team like Kidman/Konnan could win it all.

The Blue Bloods use a little old fashioned cheating to beat Konnan and Billy Kidman to advance to the semi-finals of the tag tournament.

Mean Gene interviews the "Macho Man" regarding his absence from WCW for quite some time. Savage explains where he's been and that he's back and better than ever.

As Savage is leaving the set he is jumped from behind by Hugh Morrus. Savage tries to fight back, but Morrus caught him offguard and ends up leaving him beaten and down.

Terry Funk defeated "The Cat" Ernest Miller (Rated D+)

Post Match, Miller refuses a handshake from Funk.

Backstage Chris Benoit is alone with the camera and warns Bret Hart he's coming for him, after he stabbed him in the back. He's not looking past one of the greatest of all time in Ric Flair, but he's focused and will be facing The Hitman at Souled Out.

Chris Benoit beat Ric Flair (due to interference from Buff Bagwell (Rated C)

Chris Benoit is interviewed after the match by Scott Hudson. Benoit says he did exactly what he said he would, before he's interrupted by the Hitman. After some back and forth, Benoit challenges him to come into the ring. As Bret makes his way towards the ring, Jarrett comes out from the back and joins him. With the distraction, the Outsiders sneak in from behind leading to the four men beating down the number one contender as Nitro goes off the air.

Show rating: C-

Gained in 18 regions, lost in 11.

The first thing I did was run a standard drug test across the roster, to try and cut some dead weight. Bloody hell, I swear there is a dealer within the roster based on how many people tested positive. In the end, I canned Lodi, Vincent, Big T, Brian Adams, and Lex Luger. I've replaced those guys and them some with a variety of guys including Minoru Tanaka and some faces I'm going to use to bolster the tag division a bit more.

Hugh Morrus vs. Buzzkill

Hugh attacked Randy Savage, I don't think he's dropping it here.

Minoru Tanaka vs. Chavo Guerrero

Chavo deserves to win this match.

Harlem Heat vs. PG-13

Just a formality match, Booker scores a pinfall.

Jeff Jarrett vs. Eddie Guerrero (US Title)

Too early to change titles in my opinion. Plus JJ is in the NWO.

Disco Inferno vs. Evan Karagias

Tricky match, but I'll go with Disco. He has more star qualities.

Ric Flair vs. Brian Knobbs

No brainer. Flair needs a victory after losing to Benoit.

So Lex is gone? He at least could put somebody over, not too much, but still get somebody a good popularity boost. Anyway, I will be following cause I play for them too. ;)

True, but I really want to cut some payroll and he was the only one out of him, Hall, and Steiner to have more than two years left on a contract (three years to be exact) that paid six figures. I do plan to use some of the old guys in just the way you've suggested, though.

<p>Your trying to build guys up? Use Thunder since it's your B show and doesn't have any bearings on your popularity gains in the states. The workers can gain pop, but the show grade doesn't matter in the end. Tag teams, cruiserweights, and anyone else you have in mind can really use Thunder to get over. Booker T even had an interview where he said he loved working thunder and thunder is what ultimately got him over with the fans.</p><p> </p><p>

Nitro should be the show where your major stars are featured in numerous angles and such. That way they can continue to pull the train for a small amount of time while your building young talent on thunder. It's the only way I can see you keeping your job and growing the dying product. I would definitely give Savage and Piper feuds with people like Beniot and Booker T as they are the most promising.</p><p> </p><p>

(Get Jushin Thunder Liger, cruiserweight division could easily be brought to a higher level)</p>
