Sacramento Kings: One Goal (2001-...)

Recommended Posts

INTRO:

Hey, folks. I know it hasn't been the most active of forums, but I've enjoyed reading the various games that popped up, including trypio's
game and KingofOldSchool's ongoing
game.

So how will this be different? For one thing-- I don't really know how to play the game. BHK1978 taught me about what the colors meant, but so far I've been making it up as I go along.

Like the thread title states, there's only one goal in this game, and that's to bring the NBA Championship to Sacramento.

I was a big fan of the Kings during this time (Chris Webber's my all-time favorite player) and was disappointed that they fell short of the goal of winning at least one Larry O'Brien trophy.

Can I make that happen?
Maybe
. Will I make it happen? Let's find out.

A LOOK AT THE TEAM:

Budget:

Team Budget : $ 60,862,345

Salary Cap : $ 42,500,000

2001 Salary : $ 54,100,191

Cap Room : ($ 11,600,191)

Roster:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/scotpollard.jpg

Vlade Divac and Scot Pollard are the two Centers of the team. I've always been a fan of both guys, especially Vlade.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/deangarrett.jpg

Chris Webber's the unquestioned star of the team (at least at this time), so why are there three other Power Forwards? Dean Garrett was the only guy on the Free Agents list so I signed him for the minimum, but none of the other three will be playing much, if at all.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/pejastojakovic.jpg

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/hedoturkoglu.jpg

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/geraldwallace.jpg

Peja Stojakovic is a more than capable sidekick for C-Webb, and Hedo Turkoglu's versatility at the Forward spot will be key for the team. Gerald Wallace is a nice young player to have. Hopefully he can develop without much playing time.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/dougchristie.jpg

Doug Christie's the only true SG on the team. Like the real-life Kings, we're going to be counting on Bobby Jackson to spell the defensive ace.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/mikebibby.jpg

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/bobbyjackson.jpg

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/mateencleaves.jpg

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/brentprice.jpg

Too many PG's. Mike Bibby will dominate the minutes with Bobby Jackson playing both Guard spots (like Hedo, his ability to play two positions will be important). Mateen Cleaves and Brent Price are on the Inactive List.

CLOSING THOUGHTS:

For some reason, the jersey numbers are all wonky. I must've done something wrong when setting up the game. Anyway, it won't really matter much, I think.

So here we go. Wish me luck.

PRE-SEASON:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2011%20preseason.jpg

Things start out well with four straight wins, but as you can see, tragedy strikes as the team loses Chris Webber for almost two months after he suffers a ligament injury.

It's going to be REALLY hard to replace what Webber brings to the team, and instead of inserting one of the other PF's or even Hedo into the starting line-up, I've decided to try a different strategy.

Peja Stojakovic is now the starting PF while Webber is out, while Gerald Wallace starts at SF for now. The rookie still gets limited minutes, with Hedo, Bobby Jackson, and Lawrence Funderburke getting additional time, though.

We'll see how it goes after a month.

All in all, a VERY disappointing end to what was initially an encouraging start.

EDIT: I also forgot to add that we received TWO trade proposals already.

First was from the Boston Celtics, who offered SF Rodney Rogers for PG Bobby Jackson. Needless to say, this wasn't acceptable.

Secondly, the Memphis Grizzlies tried to get SF Peja Stojakovic for PG Jason Williams. While I like me some White Chocolate, this is too steep a cost, and with Webber out, Peja's going to have to step up, big time.

OCT-NOV 2001:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2011%20nov.jpg

The team does its best to stay afloat, managing to stay above .500 (10-6) as November ends. Unfortunately, in the ultra-competitive Pacific Division, a .625 winning percentage at the end of the first month of the season is good for third, behind division leaders Golden State and defending champions LA Lakers.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2011%20nov%20div%20standing.jpg

As you can see, Lawrence Funderburke also suffered an injury, spraining his ankle following a win. Luckily, he's only projected to be out for nine days.

It's far too early into the season to start dissecting wins against various teams, but it feels good to be 2-0 against San Antonio. Not so good to be 0-2 against Detroit with no chance at revenge, however.

A couple more trade proposals over the course of the month, both involving Hedo Turkoglu:

1. Pacers offer C Jeff Foster for SF Hedo Turkoglu

2. Nuggets offer C Chris Andersen for SF Hedo Turkoglu

It'll take a few more shots to the head before I accept any of those trades.

Fun fact: The Sacramento Kings are currently second in Points Per Game, at 104.8, and only 0.1 points behind the league-leading Milwaukee Bucks (104.9).

Team Leaders after November:

Minutes Per Game : 35.4 Mike Bibby and Doug Christie

Points Per Game : 25.3 Peja Stojakovic (9th in the NBA)

Rebounds Per Game : 7.3 Vlade Divac

Assists Per Game : 6.8 Mike Bibby (5th in the NBA)

+/- Per Game : 6.6 Bobby Jackson and Doug Christie

League Leaders after November:

Minutes Per Game : 40.1 Cuttino Mobley and Steve Nash

Points Per Game : 32.6 Tracy McGrady

Rebounds Per Game : 14.9 Ben Wallace

Assists Per Game : 9.5 Jason Kidd

Good news: Chris Webber is only 19 days away from recovery.

Bad news: Chris Webber will be injured for 19 more days.

DEC 2001:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2011%20dec.jpg

EDIT: The last game on this image (W against LA Clippers) is a typographical error, it was a record from a previous save and not part of this one.

December yields the same amount of success for the Kings as they go 10-5 to finish at 20-11, good for second in the Pacific Division.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2011%20dec%20div%20standing.jpg

Other than gaining some ground on their Pacific Division rivals, the team has great reason to be happy-- they're finally at full strength. Chris Webber's return coincided with Vlade Divac's injury, so the All-Star Power Forward shifted to Center for a few games while Divac healed up.

Their projected starting line-up went 2-1 in the three games they played to end the year, so if the team can maintain that momentum heading into 2012, the rest of the league better watch out.

It's not all good news, however. Gerald Wallace heads back to the bench as his minutes are virtually erased by Webber's return. The rookie did fine as a spot starter at Small Forward, so management has to be pleased by his performance.

Two more trade proposals this month, as the Trailblazers try to unload SF Bonzi Wells, asking for PG Mike Bibby in return. This scenario is unacceptable as Bibby has done fine work steadying the ship at the Point Guard position, and has proven to be invaluable as of late.

The second proposed trade is more intriguing, with the San Antonio Spurs offering young PG Tony Parker for SF Gerald Wallace. The Spurs have stumbled to a 16-16 record after Tim Duncan broke his arm, and are probably looking to shore up their front-line. Anyway, I'm open to thoughts or suggestions on this one as I remain undecided, for now.

Team Leaders after December:

Minutes Per Game : 36.3 Mike Bibby

Points Per Game : 27.0 Chris Webber (DNQ for league leaders)

Rebounds Per Game : 8.1 Chris Webber (DNQ for league leaders)

Assists Per Game : 6.7 Mike Bibby (5th in the NBA)

+/- Per Game : 5.6 Chris Webber

League Leaders after November:

Minutes Per Game : 40.8 Steve Nash

Points Per Game : 30.0 Tracy McGrady

Rebounds Per Game : 13.9 Ben Wallace

Assists Per Game : 9.3 Jason Kidd

NEXT : Will 2002 prove to be as successful as 2001 was for the Sacramento Kings? Plus, the Kings and the Lakers finally square off!

I'd do it, you're pretty good at F and you can unload Bibby if Parker develops quickly.

Just a quick update on the Parker-Wallace trade: apparently a one-for-one is now off the table (who knew that trade offers don't last forever? ) BUT I can still get Tony Parker for Wallace, Chucky Brown, and my 2002 1st rounder.

Thoughts?

Being from Sacramento, a Kings dynasty is intriguing.

If you keep up this pace, your 1st rounder may be late in the round. I say go for it and see what comes of it but that's just a view from the cheap seats.

I agree, I mean yes giving up a first round pick is tough but you could very well end up with a late first round pick and then you are really not giving up much.

If you do that trade you give up a lot upfront. Gerald Wallace could be a good replacement for Chris Webber down the road. Chucky Brown is somewhat good off the bench and who know what that 1st rounder could be. Tony Parker is good but replacing that upfront depth could be tough.

That, and based off of my draft that year, the back part of the 1st round has a lot of decent bench guys. He could look for more depth at SG with that pick.

JAN AND FEB 2002:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20jan.jpg

I effed up yet again and wasn't able to take a screenshot of January's standings, so I have to combine the January and February posts.

The loss to the Lakers definitely was a kick in the balls, as was the three-game losing streak to kick off the New Year. The
SEVEN
-game winning streak sandwiched in between them was pretty sweet, though.

FULL DISCLOSURE : I had started a trial game before this one and foolishly traded away Peja Stojakovic for Steve Francis, then Mike Bibby for Bonzi Wells. Long story short, we were eliminated in the first round and I started a new game.

That's sort of the main reason why I wanted everyone's input on the trades. I'll update worthwhile trade offers quicker in the future. As you'll see below, the Trade Deadline's come and gone, and I
didn't
make the trade. Here's why:

1. If I make the trade, then I'll have 3 capable PG's in Mike Bibby, Bobby Jackson, and Tony Parker. I checked and Parker's starting for the Spurs. Bibby and Jackson split PG duties for the Kings (with Jackson also being the de facto backup at SG) so I don't think there'll be any time for a third guard. Parker's potential unhappiness was a pretty big factor for me.

2. Mike Bibby's still pretty young (23 years old), so I think I can depend on him for at least 5 more years.

3. I like Gerald Wallace, and I don't want to have to move him if I don't have to.

4. I agree with both sides that A) a first round draft pick is too valuable to throw away, but also, B) the 2002 draft isn't shaping up to be that deep. Right now we're projected to pick 26th, with Jiri Welsch being the pick. We'll see what happens after the season.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20feb.jpg

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20feb%20div%20standing.jpg

The first thing of note, of course, WHAT THE HECK WHERE'S THE VIDEO OF THE EPIC DUNK CONTEST (lay-up?) BATTLE BETWEEN BRIAN CARDINAL AND STEVE NASH?! LOL I made another typo-- it should be 200
2
All-Star Weekend.

The trade deadline came and went without any major trades. A total of two trades were made for the entire season:

1. ATL trades Toni Kukoc to NJN for Lucious Harris

2. MIN trades Maurice Evans to DET for Brian Cardinal

Definitely nothing earth-shaking.

We're still playing catch-up with the Lakers (and the Mavs), and I think three games is workable if we maintain our health and compete on a nightly basis. I'm beginning to think that the team struggles against high-scoring wings, so that's something to look out for during the draft. Maybe Jiri Welsch isn't sounding too bad right now. Or hopefully I can get Gerald Wallace to improve his defense.

Right now I'm not sure how to improve consistency and cohesion; there's just too many up-and-down games from our main guys and that's hurting our chances.

Team Leaders after February:

Minutes Per Game : 37.6 Peja Stojakovic

Points Per Game : 24.5 Chris Webber (DNQ for league leaders)

Rebounds Per Game : 8.8 Chris Webber (DNQ for league leaders)

Assists Per Game : 6.0 Mike Bibby (11th in the NBA)

+/- Per Game : 4.5 Vlade Divac

League Leaders after February:

Minutes Per Game : 40.5 Reggie Miller

Points Per Game : 30.4 Tracy McGrady

Rebounds Per Game : 14.8 Ben Wallace

Assists Per Game : 8.7 John Stockton

NEXT : We're all caught up to where I am in the game. Hoping that at least one of my Kings will make an All-NBA team seems like a long shot, at best, and with THREE games against the Lakers in March, this is going to be as close to "make or break" as it gets for Sacramento.

MAR 2002:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20mar.jpg

This'll be a pretty quick update as once again I forgot to gather the monthly leaders for March.

Anyway, this was a big month as the Kings showed flashes of what could be. An
eight
-game winning streak PLUS three wins over the Lakers?

Pretty dominant month for the Sacramento Kings, if I may say so, myself.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20mar%20div%20standing.jpg

OH YEAH, top of the Pacific Division! Spoiler alert: we make it past 50 wins

I'm done with the season and will type up the April update soon enough, along with the season awards.

I'm with you. That Brian Cardinal over Steve Nash dunk contest must've been epic. My guess: the NBA added a trampoline to spice up the contest.

LOL my theory is it was all a dream
or
they were playing NBA 2k2 or NBA Live 2002
:D

APR 2002:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20apr.jpg

So it's a 6-3 April and the team finishes at 55-27. Not bad for our first year (and for a team with "BAD" cohesion).

It's pretty refreshing to see Chris Webber finishing strong after missing most of the first couple of months, but I personally would like to shore up our defense. Letting Gary Payton score 44 points is NOT a good look.

But we're not here to hear my thoughts on the matter, are we? It's the end of the regular season, and it's time to wrap things up!

First up, let's see how the rest of the teams did after 82 games:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20nba%20standings.jpg

Finishing second in the conference was no small feat, and being 5 games ahead of the LA Lakers? Not bad. I would've liked to join Dallas in the 60-win club, but there's always next year, right?

I think we need a bit more help on the defensive end to
really
be a great team. Like I said before, Jiri Welsch is projected to go to us with the 28th pick, but with Gerald Wallace already starving for more playing time at the Wing spot, we probably might be better off looking for a Defensive Center.

But let's talk more about the 2002 Draft later. It's time for more stats!

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20ppg.jpg

No question that Webber, Stojakovic, and Bibby were the leaders of the team. Webber led the team in Points and Rebounds while Bibby led in Assists.

I think it goes without saying that Chris Webber also had the highest PER on the squad:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20per.jpg

I like how all three players (C-Webb, Peja, Bibby) were so close to each other, stat-wise, but I think in the long run it'll hurt their chances to get individual awards.

Let's take a look at the league leaders:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20nba%20ppg.jpg

Chris Webber ranked #10 in the entire league for Points Per Game. Not bad for someone who played only 58 games. Pretty cool for Peja Stojakovic to rank #15 while playing all 82 games, too.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20nba%20per.jpg

Four guys with 30+ PER?
And
two of them play for the Lakers? That goes to show how dominant those guys are.

I think the biggest surprise on this list is rookie Pau Gasol. Yes, he only played 59 games, but he did really well when he was on the court.

Now let's take a look at the season awards:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20nba%20awards%201.jpghttp://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20nba%20awards%202.jpg

I don't know what happened to make everyone be eligible for the rookie awards, but there we are. It happened in my old game, as well, so I must be doing something wrong. Hopefully it doesn't happen when I'm 1+ years into the game.

The entire All-NBA 3rd Team is a shock, in my opinion. I mean, the guys (probably) did well stats-wise, but I would've thought that C-Webb or Peja could've made it over those guys, right?

Well, I've rambled on for far too long. Let's end the post with the Draft Preview:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20draft%20preview%201.jpghttp://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20draft%20preview%202.jpghttp://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20draft%20preview%203.jpg

Apologies for the long, long post, guys. I hope you liked the Season Round-Up!

Let me know if you want me to check any stats or what-not!

NEXT : The 2002 Playoffs are upon us! How far can the Sacramento Kings go? Let's find out!

Do you have the most recent updated? The issue with a non-rookie winning Rookie of the Year was patched many updates ago.

The most recent is 3.0.24 which can be download here http://www.fbbgames.com/FBPB3Update071914.exe.

Oh, I don't think I have the most updated one. I downloaded it a long time ago with the intention of buying but never got around to it 'til now. Does it constantly happen, or is it only in the first year?

WOW Dirk Nowitzki was MVP and Rookie of the year? If I can turn back time........

LOL It's a glitch :p

2002 NBA PLAYOFFS:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20nba%20playoffs%20results.jpg

OH. [EXPLETIVE]. YEAH.

Due to a technical glitch (ie, me forgetting to take a screenshot of the bracket before things got underway), we're kicking things off with the results of how the Sacramento Kings' playoffs went.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/chris_webber.jpg

Pop open that bottle of champagne, light up that Cuban cigar, and take it all in.

The Sacramento Kings are your 2002 NBA Champions.

Let me repeat that one more time.

THE SACRAMENTO KINGS. ARE
YOUR
. 2002. NBA. CHAMPIONS.

Taking a quick look at the results, Chris Webber's name pops up in the "Scoring Leader" column a total of
8
times, while Peja Stojakovic scored the most points
3
times.

Webber dominated the Kings' second round series against the Phoenix Suns, who utilized undersized Shawn Marion as their primary PF. Dirk Nowitzki, on the other hand, pretty much had his way in the conference finals, but it wasn't enough against the balanced attack of the Kings.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20nba%20playoffs%20final.jpg

Nothing too surprising when it comes to the brackets, things shake out the way real-life 2002 went, for the most part. Sure, Golden State (with Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison, and Jason Richardson) went "We Believe" a couple years early, while the MJ and Rip Hamilton-led Wizards managed to sneak into the #7 seed in the East.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/616483_crop_north.jpg

The obvious surprise was the Suns knocking off the Lakers in the first round, 3-0. Both Shaq and Kobe averaged at least 27 points per game, but no other Laker was close, with Mitch Richmond scoring 9.3 points per game. All three players actually did
worse
in the playoffs, with the Dynamic Duo seeing their scoring dip from 28 PPG, and Richmond failing to reach his 10.3 PPG regular season scoring average.

So yeah, no three-peat for the Lakers. It should be interesting to see whether they make some moves to re-tool, or totally shake things up after being swept in the opening round.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/05bnp1.jpg

Scot Pollard blocked 1.2 shots in the playoffs, up from the 0.8 he averaged in the regular season.

I think it goes without saying that Chris Webber was the driving force behind the success of the squad:

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/2002%20nba%20playoffs%20mvp.jpg

His consistency was key, and as mentioned earlier, he single-handedly beat the Phoenix Suns.

It was one great game after another, one brilliant series following the last for C-Webb as he erased any question on his ability to be a leader on a championship team.

He had the right mix of talent and luck, but above all else, he stepped up. Big time.

His legacy won't be those timeouts at Michigan. It won't be those miserable years with the Bullets/Wizards.

Chris Webber is the face of the Sacramento Kings. The fans embraced him, management got behind him, and he rewarded them with the franchise's first NBA championship in the city, and its first since 1951, when the Rochester Royals beat the New York Knickerbockers, four games to three.

So what's next for the Sacramento Kings?

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/Rick-Adelman-kings-coach.jpeg

Let's see if we can do it again. The core's intact and young enough to make a similar run next year, and assuming the team adds Jiri Welsch via the draft, it should only serve to make the squad more versatile defensively.

http://i793.photobucket.com/albums/yy214/michgcs/FBPB3%20game/kings-fans-celebrate-before-the-game-major-randhawa-of-sacramento-DM9EWN.jpg

What a great way to end a magical season.

To be honest, I was looking at this season as the Kings' best chance to win the championship, and they didn't disappoint.

It was a shame that we didn't get to face the Lakers, but the #1 seed Mavericks were more than enough to solidify our title as "Best in the West*."

*(and obviously, the entire NBA)

Winning the NBA championship is always a momentous occasion, and although I came in with high hopes, actually winning it all in the first year was a heck of a feat, I think. Thank you to all of you who have taken the time to read through my ramblings, and hopefully you continue to join me as I try and make the Kings into an NBA dynasty.

Let me say it again:

Oh [expletive] yeah! The Sacramento Kings are your 2001-2002 NBA Champions!

NEXT : The annual NBA Draft Lottery! The NBA Draft! Don't miss it!

I'm pretty sure it's constant. Doesn't always mean a non rookie wins ROTY, but no need to take the chance, plus you'll get all of the added features.

Well I've updated. Hopefully nothing goes wrong :D

Now that they won the championship, you should totally hold up the city of Sacramento for a new arena. Strike while the iron is hot and if they don't give in to you threaten to move the team to Pittsburgh or St. Louis.

Why?

Well shoot those two cities have MLB, NFL, and NHL teams so it is about time the NBA returns to one of those cities.
