WWF 1993: Rise From The Ashes

Shawn Michaels is riding high as WWF Intercontinental Champion, having turned on close friend and former Rockers tag team partner, Marty Jannetty, in order to make his name alone...

And a young man by the name of Razor Ramon has been tearing apart his opposition ever since debuting a few months ago, earning the plaudits of fans and critics alike...

But deep down, the WWF are in inner turmoil. A recent indictment on steroid charges has meant that the stars of yesteryear have been suddenly, in favour of more realistic-looking heroes (and villains). This rapid pushing has led to a hostile backstage attitude, and along with that, Ted Turner's new and improved World Championship Wrestling have managed to topple the machine for the first time in ten years. The man entrusted to restore the fortunes of the ailing company is someone who has seen it all before. The man who made Hulk Hogan a global superstar. The man who created the greatest event in sports entertainment history, WrestleMania. And the man who has saved the WWF from oblivion and can do it again.

That man is Vincent Kennedy McMahon, and stay tuned as the World Wrestling Federation prepares it's RISE FROM THE ASHES...

In other news, the 'Mighty' Yokozuna will take on debuting superstar The Kid. Also, Shawn Michaels issues his Intercontinental Championship Open Challenge for the first time tonight, the number one contenders for the WWF Tag Team Championships are decided, and we will hear from Jerry Lawler about his search for someone to pass his legacy onto. WWF Superstars, 2nd January 1993

WWF Superstars

Saturday 2nd January 1993

Green Bay, Wisconsin

We are welcomed to the show by Gorilla Monsoon and Randy Savage, who hyped the night's matches, including the debut of Shawn Michaels's Open Challenge for the Intercontinental Championship. The fact that there will be number one contenders for the WWF World Tag Team Championships by the end of the night is also mentioned, but the majority of focus is placed upon the main event of the evening, as Owen Hart attempts to avenge Razor Ramon's attack on his brother, Bret, when he goes one on one with The Bad Guy. 'Also Sprach Zarathustra' then plays and out comes Ric Flair, accompanied by Bobby Heenan.

Rating: B-

The Nature Boy enters the ring, and begins to wax lyrical about his own ability, claiming that even though he has not been WWF Champion for almost three months, he will rise again at the Royal Rumble and book his place at WrestleMania IX. Heenan then takes the mic, calling out Mr Perfect for his 'treachery' over the past few months, stating that the dirtiest player of the game would have no problems with dealing with him in the ring. 'Perfection' then hits, and the man in question enters the ring. Mr Perfect says that if Flair was as good as Heenan claimed he was, he would be simply 'perfect', but after all, everybody knows there is only room for one divine talent in the WWF, and that in 22 days' time, it would be the 'Master of Perfection' who outlasted 29 other men to meet his old friend, Bret Hart, for one last epic encounter. He then states that his feud with Flair has simply gone on too long now, challenging him to a match in the near future. Flair responds by ripping his shirt, saying that Mr Perfect can have him, right there and then, but Heenan has a better idea. He recalls that on this coming Monday night, the WWF's new flagship prime-time show, Monday Night Raw, will debut, and asks what better match to close this momentous occasion than 'The Nature Boy' vs Mr Perfect. Both men begrudgingly accept, and leave the ring, as the competitors enter for the first match of the evening.

Rating: B+

Winner earns a WWF World Tag Team Championship match at Royal Rumble '93

The Steiner Brothers (Rick and Scott) vs The Beverley Boys (Blake and Beau)

As this match begins, the commentators put over the fact that Rick and Scott Steiner have been the dominant tag team in professional wrestling in the last five years, drawing attention to their University of Michigan achievements. With such hype, it is therefore little wonder that the Steiners make short work of The Beverley Boys, with Scott securing the pinfall with a Frankensteiner after 06:12?

Rating: C-

Post-match, the Steiner Brothers are celebrating their win, when Money Inc. run in, attacking the pair. As IRS beats down on Rick with a steel chair, Ted holds Scott down, screaming that Money Inc will make their lives hell, and that the Steiners will soon learn what their own price is, as Superstars cuts to a commercial break.

Rating: C+

When we return, 'Mean' Gene Okerlund is backstage, interviewing Mr Fuji and Yokozuna. Fuji does all of the talking, and states that 'The Mighty One' has never even been knocked down, let alone pinned or submitted, in the World Wrestling Federation, and that at the Royal Rumble, this will be no different. Yokozuna will be the man who will take both the Rumble and the WWF Championship back to the 'Land of the Rising Sun'.

Rating: C+

Yokozuna vs The Kid

The fact that there is a debuting wrestler in this match is briefly mentioned, but is not focuses on, as Yokozuna dominates this encounter. The Kid puts in a small amount of offence at one point, and nearly succeeds at knocking Yokozuna down with a moonsault, but as he goes towards the top rope once again, Mr Fuji throws mist into his eyes, allowing Yokozuna to hit three Banzai Drops on the rookie, for the pinfall in 04:47.

Rating: D+

A hype video is aired for the Royal Rumble, with The Undertaker (alongside Paul Bearer), Bob Backlund, and Bam Bam Bigelow vowing that they will win the match.

Rating: B-

We then go to a vignette in a gym which appears to be in Memphis, where Jerry 'The King' Lawler states that he has been scouring the area for the past week, and believes to have found his protege, who will be making his debut at Royal Rumble '93, where he will face with The Headshrinkers, alongside 'The King' himself.

Rating: C+

The action then goes back to the arena, as 'The Heartbreak Kid' Shawn Michaels is in the ring, accompanied by 'Sensational' Sherri Martel. Michaels introduces his challenge: he has found no man capable of taking his Intercontinental Championship so far, therefore he is issuing an open invitation to any WWF competitor to take him on in the ring.

Then this music hits:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pPRmGATenqM

And out comes.....

VIRGIL!

Monsoon and Savage go wild, stating that Virgil has not been seen in the World Wrestling Federation since Ted DiBiase and IRS injured him almost two months ago! The former Million Dollar Champion then comes down to the ring, as we begin the first match of this open challenge.

Rating:C

Intercontinental Championship Open Challenge:

Shawn Michaels (w/ 'Sensational Sherri') vs Virgil

Virgil gains the early momentum in this contest, hitting Michaels with a number of big moves. He manages to lock Michaels in a sleeper hold early on, but 'The Heartbreak Kid' reverses the move, hitting a hurricanrana on Virgil for a near fall. Michaels keeps control of the match from here on, eventually seeing out Virgil in 09:01 with a superkick, which Randy Savage refers to as the 'Sweet Chin Music'.

Rating: B-

Post-match, Virgil goes to shake Michaels' hand, and 'The Heartbreak Kid' appears to accept, however, he then hits Virgil with a low-blow, sending him to the ground as Superstars goes to a commercial break.

Rating: C

We return to Superstars, where Owen Hart, accompanied by his High Energy teammate Koko B Ware, hypes his upcoming contest with Razor Ramon. He states that Razor is all talk, if he really was the 'Bad Guy', he would have finished the job by attacking 'The Rocket', rather than just aiming for his brother and the WWF Championship. Owen says that this was a big mistake, as you don't mess with the Hart family, and that Razor Ramon will lose his 'edge', when he says hello to 'The Rocket'.

Rating: C-

Sean Mooney is then joined by Razor Ramon himself, for a pre-match interview. 'The Bad Guy' states that he hasn't got much to say, as his actions last week did the talking for him. He states that Owen Hart was a fool in the first place, but taking a match against Razor Ramon whilst he is on the top of his form means that he is just looking to be beaten. 'The Bad Guy' then parts with the promise that he'll destroy 'that punk' and his entire family if he has to prove how much better he is than them, and then vows that on January 24th, he will take the thing that Bret Hart loves the most away from him: the WWF Championship.

Rating: B-

Owen Hart (w/ Koko B Ware) vs Razor Ramon

This match is largely a one-sided affair, as although Owen Hart attempts to put in an attack, Razor Ramon uses his size to his advantage, launching 'The Rocket' around the ring, but instead of putting the match to bed early on, 'The Bad Guy' appeared to be aiming to hurt Owen, hitting him with a number of powerslams. In the end, Stu Hart, who was watching in the crowd, jumps the barrier and pushes Razor Ramon out of the way, leading to a disqualification win for him in 10:34.

Rating: B

Post-match, 'The Bad Guy' appears incensed with his foe's father, and prepares to hit him with the Razor's Edge, however, three more Harts (Bruce, Keith and Ross) burst out of the crowd, preventing 'The Bad Guy' from doing any more damage to Stu, as Owen is wheeled out of the arena to rapturous applause, as Monsoon proclaims there to now be a war between Razor Ramon and the Hart family, saying, "This battle has just became personal!", as Superstars draws to a close, with Randy Savage reminding viewers to tune into the debut edition of Raw this Monday!

"Nature Boy" Ric Flair (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs Mr. Perfect

With the steroids scandal, Flair would be a much better bet than Perfect.

The Undertaker vs Repo Man

Feels like a gimme.

Money Inc (w/ Jimmy Hart) vs The Headshrinkers

Money Inc. definitely gets over here.

"Hacksaw" Jim Duggan vs "The Beast from the East" Bam Bam Bigelow

More staying power with Bam Bam.

Intercontinental Championship Open Challenge:

"The Heartbreak Kid" Shawn Michaels vs ???

Even if it's a bigger name, I think Michaels wins here. Could still build a good feud with a Michaels' win.

Bonus Question: Who will accept Shawn Michaels' open challenge?

Monday Night Raw, 4th January 1993

Monday Night RAW

4th January 1993

Hammersmith Ballroom, New York

Attendance: 3,500 (SELL OUT)

Commentary Team: Vince McMahon, Bobby Heenan and Randy Savage

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ov-s_W6fArc

The intro theme blares in the arena, as Vince McMahon welcomes us to the very first edition of Monday Night Raw, here in the Manhattan Center! The commentators mainly discuss the fallout from last Saturday's episode of Superstars, when members of the Hart family prevented Razor Ramon from attacking the family patriarch, Stu Hart, after he had brutalised Owen Hart in the evening's main event. Owen is not in the arena tonight due to his injuries, but the WWF Champion is, and it is thought that he will have a few words for the Bad Guy later on. The fact that Shawn Michaels, Money Inc. and The Undertaker will be in action tonight is also mentioned, as well as the main event between two men who have been feuding for months, Ric Flair and Mr Perfect. 'Two by Four' then hits, and out comes 'Hacksaw' Jim Duggan for the first match of the evening, against none other than the 'Beast from the East', Bam Bam Bigelow!

Rating: C+

'Hacksaw' Jim Duggan vs Bam Bam Bigelow

This match is an even contest, with both men putting in a large amount of offence. Duggan gets the early advantage when he manages to hit Bigelow with a clothesline, knocking him to the ground. However, at this point, Kamala comes down to the ring, as Kim Chee distracts the referee, allowing 'The Ugandan Giant' to pick Duggan up for a powerslam. Bigelow then gets up and brings Duggan back to his feet, hitting a 'Wham, Bam, Thank You Ma'am', to secure the win in 07:46.

Rating: C-

Post-match, Bigelow and Kamala continue to beat down on Duggan, but The Big Boss Man comes out and threatens both men with his nightstick, meaning that both back down and leave the ring.

Rating: C

Shawn Michaels then comes out, and says that his victory against Virgil on Superstars was far too easy, and as a result, he is extending his challenge, saying that he is unbeatable.

Then this music hits...

And the crowd go ballistic as 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper comes out. The commentators note the fact that Piper has not been seen in the World Wrestling Federation for almost a year, but is clearly a force not to be reckoned with. Michaels merely stands in the ring, shocked, as the match begins.

Rating: A

Intercontinental Championship Open Challenge:

Shawn Michaels vs Roddy Piper

This match is much more of a contest than the previous match in the Open Challenge, as both men use it to showcase their technical ability. No man is able to gain an advantage in the match, as it spills out to ringside. Michaels manages to reverse a sleeper by Piper and slams him into the ring apron, slipping back into the ring to ensure a countout victory after 11:21.

Rating: B+

Post-match, Piper regains his composure and enters the ring, and offers his hand to Michaels, acknowledging that for once, somebody had outsmarted him. 'The Heartbreak Kid' refuses the handshake and turns away from Piper, only to be grabbed from behind with a sleeper hold, which Michaels once again reverses, hitting Piper with a Sweet Chin Music, as Raw goes to a commercial break.

Rating: B

As Raw returns, Sean Mooney is interviewing Ted DiBiase and IRS backstage. Mooney asks the pair why they attacked the Steiner Brothers so callously on Superstars, DiBiase replies that they weren't being heartless, they were simply trying to show 'a pair of amateurs' how things work in the big time. IRS then chips in, stating that they had got too greedy for their own good, and it was down to Money Inc. to tax them back down to earth. DiBiase then says that The Steiners haven't had the worst of their introduction yet, as at Royal Rumble, they will be greeted by the sight of The Million Dollar Man's very own hired muscle, and will therefore fail at taking the gold away from its only rightful owners.

Rating: B-

WWF World Tag Team Championship:

Money Inc. (Ted DiBiase and Irwin R. Schyster) (w/ Jimmy Hart) vs The Headshrinkers (Fatu and Samu)

This match is a largely one-sided affair, with The Headshrinkers dominating their opponents. Nevertheless, it is a surprise that they fall to the World Tag Team Champions when Jerry 'The King' Lawler distracts Samu at ringside, allowing to IRS to gain a roll up victory.

Rating: C

Post-match, The Headshrinkers attempt to attack Jerry Lawler, however, they are stopped by the timely intervention of a masked man, who chases both men away as Lawler gloats, walking back up the aisle.

Rating: D+

We now go to Paul Bearer's Funeral Parlour, which has been set up backstage. Bearer is interviewing none other than Brutus Beefcake this week, who is preparing to make his in-ring comeback at the Royal Rumble after eighteen months on the sidelines. The Undertaker is notably absent, perhaps due to his match later on tonight. Beefcake is asked about his chances of winning the Royal Rumble, to which 'The Barber' replies to by saying that he is not aiming to win it himself, he only hopes that he can put in a strong enough impression to launch himself back into the big time permanently. He is then asked about his chances of beating 'The Mighty One' Yokozuna, one of the favourites for the Rumble, next week on Monday Night Raw, to which Beefcake replies by saying that Yokozuna and Mr Fuji has bullied their way through the World Wrestling Federation for too long, and it's time for someone to take them down. At this point, Yokozuna comes out, accompanied by Mr Fuji, and grabs Beefcake, launching him through a stray coffin, as the Funeral Parlour draws to a close.

Rating: C+

'Hart Attack' then blares through the arena, as Bret 'The Hitman' Hart arrives at Monday Night Raw. His confrontation with Razor Ramon, coming up next.

Rating: B

By the time that Raw returns, Bret Hart is already in the ring. He calls out Razor Ramon for attacking his brother last week, stating that he could've just left him until the WWF Champion returned. He then states that Owen is in hospital, recovering from his injuries, but he will soon be back, as in just under three weeks' time, he, and the entire Hart family, will be present to watch 'The Hitman' end the Bad Guy's reign of terror, once and for all. A video then shows up on the Titantron, as we see Razor Ramon outside of the Hart Dungeon in Calgary, Alberta. Ramon states that 'this place is even more of a dump than I thought, mang', as he walks towards the building. Bruce Hart is on hand to usher him away, saying that 'The Bad Guy' would be mad to go in there. Razor Ramon tells him 'it's alright, chico', Razor Ramon has already infiltrated the Hart Dungeon, as he has recruited one of its home-grown superstars to help him crush the dreams of the Hart family at the Royal Rumble, where he will be accompanying the Bad Guy to the ring. Bret argues that this couldn't be true, no Hart Dungeon wrestler would betray the family, as the video cuts out, and Bret is left standing alone in the ring.

Rating: B+

The Undertaker (w/ Paul Bearer) vs Repo Man

Before the match, Repo Man tries to swipe the urn from Paul Bearer's hands, however, a The Undertaker prevents this from occurring. The match itself is a one-sided affair, with The Undertaker picking up the victory in 00:50 with a Tombstone Piledriver.

Rating: D+

Post-match, a masked figure appears at the top of the aisle, and taunts the Undertaker, giving Repo Man enough time to take the urn, and run backstage without The Undertaker catching him.

Rating: C

Bobby Heenan then leaves the commentary desk, stating that he wants to see Mr Perfect get destroyed first hand in tonight's main event.

Rating: B

Ric Flair (w/ Bobby Heenan) vs Mr Perfect

This match is an even contest, with both men trying to out-do the other psychologically. Mr Perfect attempts to hit Flair with a Perfect-Plex late on, but Flair reverses this move into a DDT. He then applies the Figure Four Leglock, which Heenan surprisingly breaks up by placing Perfect's foot on the ropes. Flair then begins to argue with Heenan at ringside, claiming he had the match won, but before Heenan can respond, Perfect turns Flair around for a Perfect-Plex and the pinfall in 13:39.

Rating: B+

Post-match, Ric Flair begins to berate Heenan for breaking up the submission, and then attempts to attack 'The Brain'. Mr Perfect casually walks back to ringside, seemingly glad that Heenan is getting his comeuppance. Flair punches Heenan once and prepares to lock him into the Figure Four Leglock, but before he can do any damage...

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=guG9cVs3ms4

HULK HOGAN, of all people, comes out to rescue 'The Brain'! The initial excitement is soon run over by confusion as Hogan clotheslines Flair into the announce table, then helps Heenan back up to his feet, supporting him on his way backstage as the crowd is unsure whether to cheer or boo. Vince McMahon sums up this interruption with one statement: "Hulk Hogan has returned to the World Wrestling Federation for the first time in eight months, but what is he doing, and whose side is he on?"

WWF Monday Night RAW

11th January 1993

Madison Square Garden, New York

Attendance: 18,500 (Sell Out)

Commentators: Vince McMahon and Bobby Heenan

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ov-s_W6fArc

McMahon and 'The Brain' welcome WWF fans to this very special edition of the only prime time show in professional wrestling, right here from the home of the sport, Madison Square Garden. They hype some of the evening's matches, including Harvey Wippleman's client Adam Bomb taking on the WWF Champion, Bret 'The Hitman' Hart, Razor Ramon vs Keith Hart, and the third match of Shawn Michaels' Intercontinental Championship Open Challenge. Heenan then mentions that he will be calling out Hulk Hogan on the first edition of 'The Brain Show', to explain his actions last week.

Rating: B

--------------------

We then go to the ring, where The Undertaker, accompanied by Paul Bearer and Jerry 'The King' Lawler, are present. Lawler says that he was wrong about the masked men who have been terrorising WWF programming for several weeks now, saying that he thought they were on his side, but it turns out that they don't take sides: their fight is relentless, and they are going to take down the World Wrestling Federation if they aren't stopped. Paul Bearer then takes the microphone and says that The Undertaker is a patient man, but there is only so much that one man can take: he, too, is looking for vengeance. The Undertaker surprisingly then takes the microphone himself, challenging the masked men to come down to the ring and face them, if they think they are tough enough. There is a brief pause, and all three men go to leave the ring, when this music hits:

Vince McMahon is in disbelief, as AX and SMASH, better known as DEMOLITION, return to the World Wrestling Federation. They run down to the ring and immediately pose down Lawler and The Undertaker, before Ax grabs a microphone. He gets in Lawler's face, saying that while 'The Burger King' over here has been busy focusing on the masked men who've been tearing the WWF down for weeks, he forgot to watch his own back, and Demolition are back to beat some sense back into him. Smash then proclaims that they aren't the masked men, they don't know who the masked men are, but one thing that they do know is that they can "kick ass" all across the country, and then challenges 'The King' and The Undertaker to a match in tonight's main event, which the pair accept.

Razor Ramon vs Keith Hart

As this match begins, the commentators hype the WWF title match at Royal Rumble '93 between Bret Hart and Razor Ramon, which will be a battle of pride as well as strength and mentality. Nevertheless, 'The Bad Guy' swiftly deals with his foe's brother, Keith, defeating him in 04:36 with a Razor's Edge.

Rating: C-

Post-match, Razor takes a microphone, telling Bret Hart that his brother just got off easy, but at the Royal Rumble, 'The Bad Guy' and his new buddy from the Hart Dungeon will make sure that 'The Hitman' will not only see his title reign ended, but his career will also draw to a close.

We now go to the debut edition of 'The Brain Show', with Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan. Heenan begins the segment by detailing the events of last week's events on Monday Night Raw, where Ric Flair callously attacked him unprovoked, only for Heenan's old foe, Hulk Hogan to come out and save him. The Brain says that he has to be honest: he has absolutely no idea why Hogan did what he did, but he knows Hogan too well to think that he has nothing to gain from this incident, and then asks if 'The Hulkster' is in the arena. Ric Flair then surprisingly walks onto the set, and says he has a few questions for Heenan, such as, 'Who put you up to throwing away my match with Perfect?' The Brain says he has no idea what Flair is talking about, but out of the blue, a pre-taped segment airs, showing Bobby Heenan and Mr Perfect walking backstage together before last week's Raw main event. Flair calls Heenan 'a turncoat', saying that he could've rubbed shoulders with the greatest as Flair's executive consultant, but now, he is left with nothing as 'The Nature Boy' looks for a new challenge. Heenan then tells Flair to stop whining, the better man won, but Flair then grabs Heenan and goes to throw him through the set, only to be stopped again by, yes, you guessed it, Hulk Hogan. Hogan and Flair have a brief stare off, meaning that 'The Nature Boy' has no choice but to let go of Heenan. The Brain then tries to talk to Hogan, but 'The Hulkster' walks off before any questions can be asked.

Rating: B+

--------------------

We then go back to the ring, where Shawn Michaels is in the ring. Michaels says that while last week's match may have been a 'slight' challenge, he feels as if he needs someone stronger to face him. The Heartbreak Kid then announces that he has called an old buddy of his, to see if he can 'give him the test of his life'. Then unfamiliar music hits:

And Shawn Michaels introduces the challenger as his close friend, Diesel. The pair shake hands, before the match begins.

Intercontinental Championship Open Challenge:

Shawn Michaels (w/ Sensational Sherri) vs Diesel

This match was also an even contest, with Diesel matching Michaels' technical ability with brute force. Nevertheless, Michaels still managed to pick up the win in 08:34, when he hit the Sweet Chin Music on Diesel.

Rating: B-

Post-match, the pair shake hands, and Michaels says that he is now undoubtably the greatest technical wrestler there has ever been, and says that there is only one man who could potentially challenge him in terms of 'perfection'. The crowd pops for the mention of Mr Perfect, as Michaels asks him personally to challenge him next week, to see which man really is 'perfect'.

We then cut to Sean Mooney, who is backstage with a panel of Madison Square Garden legends: Paul Orndorff, Andre The Giant, Ivan Koloff, Bruno Sammartino and The Iron Sheik! Mooney asks the panel what they think of the show so far: Orndorff says that he likes the look of Diesel, saying that even though he lost, he showed enough composure to prove that he has total potential. Bruno Sammartino agrees with this statement, however, he expresses a hope that Mr Perfect knocks some sense into Michaels next week on Raw. Koloff then says that he thinks that Razor Ramon is a classic 'bad guy', even reminding him of the 'Russian Bear' in his youth. Andre The Giant then lays into the masked men, saying that he has no idea why they would hide behind a mask, stating that he wouldn't do such a thing, as Orndorff and Mooney both give him a disconcerting look. Adam Bomb and Harvey Wippleman then walk onto the scene, and begin to tear into the legends, telling Sammartino and Koloff that "it's not 1971" anymore", to which The Iron Sheik reacts with fury, telling Bomb that Bret Hart will "make him humble", Bomb simply smirks and walks offstage, as the announcers hype that match, coming up next.

Rating: B

Bret Hart vs Adam Bomb (w/ Harvey Wippleman)

Adam Bomb goes into this match with a strong level of momentum, having dominated opponents for several months on Superstars and Wrestling Challenge. However, 'The Hitman' slowly, but surely dismantles him, making Bomb submit in 11:34 with a Sharpshooter.

Rating: B+

Post-match, we briefly go back to the legends panel, who are seen celebrating the previous victory.

--------------------

We then go back to the action, for tonight's main event!

The Undertaker and Jerry Lawler (w/ Paul Bearer) vs Demolition (Ax and Smash)

The Undertaker and Lawler appeared up for this contest, hitting Demolition with a number of powerful moves, however, Demolition quickly regrouped and matched the pair blow-for-blow. Neither team was able to gain an advantage, until the masked men who have tormented The Undertaker and Jerry Lawler for several weeks turned up at ringside, distracting Lawler long enough for Ax to get a roll up win after 10:59.

Rating: C+

Post-match, the masked men beat down on the defeated tag team, but Demolition have one trick up their sleeve. Ax goes behind one of the men and removes his mask...

....to reveal.....

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=R4swnMZIXnc

VADER is here in Madison Square Garden! Deafening boos are heard in the crowd as he hits the members of Demolition with numerous powerbombs, leaving them slumped in the ring as he and the other masked man walk back down the aisle, as the announcers ponder: what does Vader want from the World Wrestling Federation?

Jeez do you even have the money for these guys? This is turning into a loaded roster!

Like the Lucha idea, is it going to be a B-show?

Was thinking along those lines, may do more extended write ups for it than Superstars though.

The only signings I've actually made as of yet are Demolition, Vader, and 'one other superstar', the legends panel only came in for a one time appearance then were released, and Hogan and Piper were still on the roster, but were under 'semi-active'. The AAA guys are obviously only coming in on PPA contracts so I have some flexibility with them.

Monday Noght RAW, 18th January 1993

Monday Night Raw

18th January 1993

Staples Center, Los Angeles

Attendance: 15,875

Announcers: Gorilla Monsoon, Vince McMahon and Bobby Heenan

The announcers welcome us to Monday Night RAW! With only six days to go until Royal Rumble '93, the commentary team plug the main matches for the event, such as the WWF Intercontinental Championship Open Challenge, the debut of Jerry Lawler's protege, and the 30-man Royal Rumble match! Vince McMahon then hypes tonight's show, stating that we will see the return of both Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake to WWF in-ring action when the old friends face off in the show's semi-main event. The WWF debut of 'The Man They Call' Vader will also take place, not to forget the unveiling of Razor Ramon's Hart Dungeon turncoat. Speaking of the WWF Championship match, Heenan calls our attention to the ring, where the contract signing for that bout is about to take place. (B)

Razor Ramon and Bret Hart are both sat at a table in the ring, with WWF President, Jack Tunney, either side of them. Razor Ramon talks about his undefeated streak in the World Wrestling Federation, how no man will ever defeat him and that Sunday night will be no exception when he puts the Hart family out of their misery by ending the career of their one remaining hopeful. Bret Hart responds by saying that Razor only had to ask for a title shot rather than bullying and chiding his family, he's seen enough of him in the ring to know he would be a formidable opponent, but in attacking The Hart Family, he's only cementing his defeat, as 'The Hitman' never takes his eye off the ball where his family is involved, as Bret signs the document. Razor then says that Bret Hart isn't focused, he's too busy looking after Stu Hart and his deadbeat family to realise that he is looking at the true champion, commenting that once 'The Bad Guy' is finished with Bret Hart, 'Stu Hart will get put down just like Old Yeller, mang', as Bret Hart loses his temper, flipping over the table and getting face to face with Razor Ramon. Bret says that if Ramon's so sure that his traitorous Hart Dungeon friend is on his side, then Razor should drag him out tonight for a tag team match with an opponent whom Bret Hart greatly respects, as Ric Flair surprisingly jumps over a barrier in the crowd and joins the two men in the ring. Razor accepts, throwing his toothpick at Bret before signing the contract and walking away, smirking, to the fury of 'The Hitman'. (B+)

The commentary team then hype Vader, stating that he has wrestled all over the world, but only now is he making his WWF debut, as part of a masked vigilante group insistent on taking out the World Wrestling Federation, against the young rookie, PJ Walker.

(B-)

Vader vs PJ Walker

'The Mastodon' quickly saw off his opponent in this one, winning in 01:29 with a chokeslam, without Walker getting in any offence. (C-)

Shawn Michaels, Sensational Sherri and Diesel then come to the ring. Michaels says that he was so impressed with Diesel's performance last week, he has hired him as an official bodyguard for the WWF Intercontinental Championship, stating that whoever has this belt will also have this man, which the Heartbreak Kid says shouldn't matter, as Shawn Michaels will be holding this belt for a long time. He then addresses Mr Perfect, saying that he asked him to accept the open challenge last week on RAW, but clearly, he hasn't been in the ring yet, meaning that he is too frail and weak to accept the challenge. Michaels then struts around the ring, saying he may as well ask someone undeserving of the belt to come out and-

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=nBOZQGa5nbQ

Mr Perfect duly comes out, grabbing a microphone and telling Michaels to use his fists rather than his mouth to finish this one, as the pair begin grappling.

Intercontinental Championship Open Challenge

Shawn Michaels © vs Mr Perfect

This match starts off slowly and methodically, as the two men share similar styles of wrestling, meaning that neither man is able to get the advantage. Mr Perfect begins hitting a range of suplexes on Michaels, leading to Gorilla commenting that 'you can teach an old dog new tricks', however, Diesel gets involved and hits Perfect with a Jackknife Powerbomb. Michaels gets up and hits Mr Perfect with a Sweet Chin Music in midair, leading to him going for the pin:

1....

2...KICKOUT!

Michaels is in shock as Mr Perfect becomes the first person to kick out of the Sweet Chin Music! Perfect hits his distracted opponent with a clothesline, before going up to the top rope for an elbow drop. Upon seeing this, Diesel grabs his leg, and tosses him out to ringside, watching as Mr Perfect goes headfirst into the ringside barrier! The referee sees that Mr Perfect may be seriously injured, and goes to call for the bell, but is distracted by Sensational Sherri at ringside, giving Michaels enough time to grab the bell from the timekeeper. Diesel goes over to Mr Perfect and drags him over to Michaels, allowing The Heartbreak Kid to hit him with multiple bell shots. The pair throw Mr Perfect back into the ring, as Michaels again goes for the pinfall:

1....

2....

THR-KICKOUT!

The entire arena goes ballistic as Mr Perfect somehow kicks out of this pinfall attempt. Michaels and Diesel grab a number of chairs in fury and set themselves upon Mr Perfect in the ring, causing him to gain the disqualification win in 14:30. (B+)

Post-match, the triumphant trio pose with the Intercontinental Championship belt, as Mr Perfect is stretchered out of the ring to a standing ovation. Bobby Heenan, in a rare emotional moment, tells the fans watching at home that Mr Perfect may have suffered a recurrence of his prior back injury, putting his career into serious doubt. (B

A taped interview with Jim Duggan is aired, in which he discusses his match with Bam Bam Bigelow at Royal Rumble '93. He says that Bigelow may have youth on his side, but The 'Hacksaw' will not be beaten with all of his fans behind him, stating that in six days' time, he will crush the 'unholy alliance' between Kamala and Bigelow once and for all. (C+)

The Undertaker and Paul Bearer are now in the ring, being interviewed by Vince McMahon. Vince asks about how the masked vigilantes have affected The Undertaker over the last few weeks, to which Bearer replies by saying that 'The Deadman' is not threatened by cowards who parade in masks in an attempt to appear a fraction of the superstar that The Undertaker is. Vince then asks if Demolition will follow through with their promise to bring the leader of the vigilante group to ringside at Royal Rumble '93. The Undertaker speaks at this point, saying that Demolition are clearly not aware of what a vicious man The Undertaker can be, and all that bringing the so-called Vigilante to the ring will do is seal their fate, as in six days' time, Demolition will have to fight their own battles...in the depths of hell. (B)

Mr Fuji and Yokozuna join the RAW commentary team for the next match, which contains 'the epitome of American stupidity', Hulk Hogan and Brutus Beefcake, as the Mega-Maniacs prepare to do battle for the first time! (C+)

Hulk Hogan vs Brutus Beefcake

'The Barber' looks surprisingly convincing in this match, easily matching Hogan's offence, a result of their long-lasting friendship. Nevertheless, he is distracted by the appearance of Fuji and Yokozuna, leading to Hogan hitting him with a big boot and leg drop for the victory in 12:56. (C)

Post-match, Yokozuna enters the ring, intending to attack Beefcake. 'The Barber' asks his old friend for help, but in an action that WWF fans have grown familiar to over the last few weeks, Hulk Hogan simply walks back down the aisle, leaving Yokozuna and Brutus Beefcake standing toe-to-toe with one another. 'The Mighty One' and Mr Fuji leave the ring rather than attacking Beefcake, telling him that they'll see him in 'The Rumble'. (B-)

A hype video plays for WWF Lucha, a new programme in conjunction with AAA, debuting on February 9th on USA Network, with a inaugural main event of El Hijo De Santo vs Psicosis! (C-)

Jerry Lawler is now backstage with 'Mean' Gene Okerlund. 'The King' tells the Headshrinkers to watch their backs, as even though their Samoan legacy may be well-deserved, the legacy of 'The Memphis Gods' will be too strong for their savage minds to handle, and that in six days' time, they will see how technique overrules brute force, when the new protege of Jerry Lawler blesses the World Wrestling Federation with his arrival. (C+)

Vince McMahon is now in the ring with Bret Hart and Ric Flair, as the pair wait for Razor Ramon. Bret Hart says it's time for 'The Bad Guy' to show 'The Excellence of Execution' what he has got. Ric Flair then says that he has respected the history of the Hart family for a long time, and that he can't wait to deal with the punk who dares deface that legacy. Razor Ramon then comes out, as this music plays:

Bret Hart is in utter shock, as 'Flyin' Brian Pillman comes to the ring. The commentary team hype the fact that Pillman has been in some 'unimportant southern promotion' preparing for his debut, and now he has the chance to show the world what he has got. The four men stare down as the match begins.

Ric Flair and Bret Hart vs Brian Pillman & Razor Ramon

This match was an even affair, however, Pillman and Ramon took the match, as a distraction at ringside from Hulk Hogan resulted in Pillman getting a roll up on Flair for the victory. (B+)

Post-match, Ric Flair runs his mouth off at Hogan, saying he has betrayed the fans who worshipped him for so long, the fans who trusted him, who put their hopes of success in him, by siding with a weasel like Heenan. Hogan then takes the mic, saying that he's turned his back on nobody, the only reason he stopped Flair from attacking Heenan was because 'The Hulkster' needed to give him the beating that he deserved. Hogan has not turned against 'all his Hulkamaniacs', and in six days' time, he will prove that he has the best intentions when he throws 'The Unmighty One', Yokozuna, out of the ring to win the Royal Rumble, restore American pride, and head to WrestleMania IX. He then puts out his hand, and Flair willingly shakes it, as Gorilla Monsoon asks if this new alliance will affect the result at Royal Rumble '93, as he tells fans to order it on pay-per-view on 24th January! (B)

Final Show Rating: B

Royal Rumble 1993 Prediction Card

WWF Royal Rumble Preview

WWF Championship Match

Bret 'The Hitman' Hart © vs 'The Bad Guy' Razor Ramon w/ 'Flyin' Brian Pillman

Razor Ramon has been running riot in the World Wrestling Federation since his arrival in September 1992, his undefeated streak earning him a WWF Championship match against the seemingly unstoppable 'Excellence of Execution', Bret Hart. However, since he was rewarded the match, 'The Bad Guy' has tormented the Hart family, putting Owen, Keith and, for a brief period, Bret himself, on the shelf, as well as berating the family patriarch, Stu, but his worst act came when he convinced Hart Dungeon graduate 'Flyin' Brian Pillman to turn his back on the family, and join forces with the Bad Guy. This Sunday, will Razor Ramon's mind games prove costly for Bret Hart, or will 'The Hitman' shoot him down?

WWF Tag Team Championship Match

Money Inc © (Ted DiBiase and Irwin R. Schyster) w/ Jimmy Hart vs The Steiner Brothers (Rick and Scott Steiner)

This match was decided in a match on Superstars three weeks ago, when Rick and Scott Steiner winning a number one contenders' match for the WWF Tag Team Championship. Since then, the champions have been largely absent from competition, leaving The Steiner Brothers to do most of the groundwork. Money Inc made a triumphant return on Raw, to state that their 'Hired Muscle' would be too strong for the Steiner Brothers to manage, and given his storied background, you would be a fool to bet against 'The Million Dollar Man'. The question is: can Rick and Scott win this one, against all the odds?

WWF Intercontinental Championship Open Challenge

'The Heartbreak Kid' Shawn Michaels © w/ Diesel and 'Sensational' Sherri vs ???

For the last three weeks, Shawn Michaels has been challenging any WWF Superstar to take him on for the Intercontinental Championship. In the four open challenge bouts, he has defeated the likes of Roddy Piper, Virgil, and his own bodyguard, Diesel, but his most emphatic victory came against Mr Perfect on the last Raw before the Royal Rumble, where 'The Master of Perfection' suffered a recurrence of his back injury, sidelining him for six months. Mr Perfect has since stated that he will be at the Royal Rumble, bringing a very familiar face to face Shawn Michaels and claim 'ultimate revenge'.

Handicap Match

The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs Demolition (Ax and Smash) w/ ???

The World Wrestling Federation has been tormented by a group of masked vigilantes since the beginning of 1993, seemingly targeting The Undertaker. 'The Deadman' has reacted in typical fashion, steamrolling his way through a number of suspects, however, he suffered an attack from within when Demolition made their triumphant return to WWF programming by defeating him and Jerry Lawler. Demolition state they are trying to teach The Undertaker a thing or two about fighting your own battles: but does 'The Phenom' have the inner strength to do so?

Grudge Match:

'The Beast from the East' Bam Bam Bigelow vs 'Hacksaw' Jim Duggan

The American hero, Jim Duggan, returned from a brief hiatus earlier this year, when he was attacked by Kamala, resulting in Duggan losing a match against Bam Bam Bigelow. Bigelow and Kamala have since revealed themselves to be in partnership, but can 'Hacksaw' break up the pair before they've even got started?

Tag Team Match

The Headshrinkers vs Jerry Lawler and ???

For weeks, Jerry 'The King' Lawler has been taunting his opponents, stating that he will be debuting a protege at the Royal Rumble who will continue the legacy of Memphis wrestling, long after his retirement. Nevertheless, a tag team who know a few things about continuing a legacy are The Headshrinkers, Samu and Fatu. In a match pitting savage Samoan strength and slick Memphis technique, who will prove to have the greater legacy, and just who is Jerry Lawler's protege?

Royal Rumble Match

Featuring: Yokozuna, Hulk Hogan, Ric Flair, The Undertaker, and many more!

The main event of this pay-per-view is its marquee match: The 30-Man Royal Rumble! Such men as Hulk Hogan, Big John Studd and Ric Flair have won the legendary contest to beat all others, but there is an added prestige this year, as WWF President, Jack Tunney, has agreed that the winner of the match will go on to face the WWF Champion at WrestleMania! With so much at stake, just who will come on top and cement their place in history?

Prediction Card For Royal Rumble '93:

Somehow I missed this post. Another great show!

WWF Championship Match:

Bret 'The Hitman Hart © vs 'The Bad Guy' Razor Ramon w/ 'Flyin' Brian Pillman

Comments:With Pillman makes this tricky for me, as I have a preexisting condition that forces me to pick Pillman always, but sticking with The Hitman for now.

WWF Tag Team Championship Match

Money Inc © (Ted DiBiase and Irwin R. Schyster) w/ Jimmy Hart vs The Steiner Brothers (Rick and Scott Steiner)

Comments:Ted is getting older and IRS isn't young himself, so now is a good time to make the transition, starting here with interference and a DQ win for the Steiners.

WWF Intercontinental Championship Open Challenge

'The Heartbreak Kid' Shawn Michaels © w/ Diesel and 'Sensational' Sherri vs ???

Comments:My guess is he holds until Mania.

Handicap Match

The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs Demolition (Ax and Smash) w/ ???

Comments:Handicap matches with Taker... always go with Taker!

'The Beast from the East' Bam Bam Bigelow vs 'Hacksaw' Jim Duggan

Comments:Gotta make Bam Bam look strong for that Lawrence Taylro match xD

The Headshrinkers vs Jerry 'The King' Lawler and ???

It's the freakin' King.

30-Man Royal Rumble Match:

Winner: Owen Hart

Final Four:Ric Flair, Diesel, Yokozuna, Owen Hart

Most Eliminations: Diesel

Longest Time:Yokozuna

Shortest Time:Barry Horowitz

Bonus Questions:

1: Who will accept Shawn Michaels' Intercontinental Championship Open Challenge? 1-2-3 Kid. He's coming at some point!

2: Who is Jerry 'The King' Lawler's new protege? Brian Lawler... is he around yet? I could see that.

3: Will the leader of the group dubbed the 'Vigilantes' be revealed? If so, who is he? It has to happen either here or at Mania. Could go either way, on that. Honestly feel like there's a host of possibilities here, but if you're signing talent like Vader... could be Sting, given the vigilante name.

4: Who will debut as Money Inc's 'hired muscle'? Could see Adam Bomb possibly being here.
