December 2012

NOTBPW Headquarters

The man in the slightly less expensive-looking suit shook his head in disbelief. He was unable to say anything for quite a while, shocked by what his opposite just said - said again. Sure, it was not the first time that a request - or rather an order - like this had been expressed by his boss, but this time, it was something completely different. This time, it was unacceptable.

???: "You really want me to wrestle? Even though you know I'm still hurt from this darn back injury?"

http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj572/Xendarii/Dynasties/WPL/Jeremy%20Stone_alt1_zpsdenmilso.jpg

Jeremy Stone, the man behind the desk nodded impatiently, the expression on his face telling of a complete lack of understanding for the situation that the man who had just spoken was in.

Stone: "Winter War is only two weeks away, and to be honest, I'm not that happy with how well the fans respond to the storyline you're in. It's necessary that we get you some heat going, and for that, you need to step into that ring and compete just like any other wrestler would. You've been cleared by our doctors, there shouldn't be any issue."

???: "Look, I might've agreed with you ten, even five years ago, but I'm 37 right now! My body is not young enough to get thrown around the ring when I'm not at a hundred percent, and you know that."

Stone (sighs): "I have a company to run. I have investors that need to be satisfied. I have thousands of fans that bought tickets for tomorrow's show to see you in action. You were always willing to put your health on the line to entertain these people, to do what you love to do. When did that attitude change?"

???: "At the very moment that you ordered me to wrestle injured."

Stone: "You're not injured. You're feeling a little uncomfortable, that's all."

???: "I think I know my body better than you, Jeremy. And I won't risk my health and my future in this business for a match against Devyn Reynaud."

Silence. Nobody was willing to say anything after these distinct words. They just looked at each other, trying to read their opposite's thoughts, but obviously unable to do so. Finally, after minutes, the man in front of the desk got up from his leather armchair and headed towards the door.

Stone: "So... what are we going to do?"

???: "I don't know about you. I'm leaving."

Stone: "I see. What I meant was: What are we going to do about this situation? What about tomorrow?"

He put his right hand on the doorhandle while he thought about his next words. Words that would change everything.

???: "I'm not only leaving your office, Jeremy. I'm leaving North of the Border Pro Wrestling."

Moments later, he opened the door and slipped out of the room, not allowing Jeremy Stone to respond or hold him up. Granted, he was never a man that liked dramatic departures, but in this case, he felt like it had been much needed.

Looks like this will be my bid to do a diary that's not about APW. As you might've already seen, or likely will see very soon, it's heavily inspired by Voeltzwagon's amazing All Action Wrestling: Canada's.....Not so Finest, and quite frankly, his diary has been my main motivation to start this project because of how much I enjoy it.

This will not feature fancy graphics - I will not try to make a visually polished product just like my APW diary was supposed to be, but instead will focus on the actual content. I feel like this is will allow me to do more frequent updates (although they'll probably still be delayed more often than not because of my studies) and especially, they'll prevent me from getting dissatisfied due to the graphics and visual presentation not being perfect.

I'm not a native English speaker. I'm from Germany, and while I'm trying very hard to get everything right and write something that you can enjoy, it's likely that I'll do mistakes. If there's something I'm always doing wrong, please tell me, because that's the only way I can improve. Generally, feedback concerning my English is always appreciated for that reason. And of course, any other feedback about this diary, its stories, shows, characters, whatever comes to your mind, is more than welcome, because readers that actually care are the reason why this forum is so great.

NOTBPW Training Center

The training center of Canada's biggest wrestling promotion, North of the Border Pro Wrestling, had been something like a second home for me over the last two years. Here I spent most of my time, working hard to improve my skills that, in all modesty, were already pretty good for my young age. However, for three straight days now, my trainer and mentor had not shown up. I was concerned - not only because this meant that I couldn't train as efficiently as normally, but also because I considered him a friend of mine.

On this day however, I was in the ring with one of my training partners, trying a new submission hold I was told to introduce to my matches in a few weeks, when he finally walked in.

http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj572/Xendarii/Dynasties/WPL/Johnny%20Bloodstone_2_zpsyiidhzcm.jpg

Johnny Bloodstone wore his suit and didn't really look ready to train at all. But since that was not my main concern anyway, I overlooked it, told my partner that I needed a short break and headed towards my mentor who had quite a guilty look on his face.

???: "Where have you been? You missed two workouts, I almost unlearned everything you've taught me!"

A faint smile was the reaction to my playful greeting, but he immediately became serious again.

Johnny: "I'm sorry, seriously. I had... a few things to sort out. The last days were pretty busy and nerve-racking for me."

???: "You could've at least left a message or something. I was worried."

I turned around, ready to head back to the ring and continue my training with his assistance. I knew Johnny well enough to know that he wouldn't talk about what bothered him, and if he would, this was probably not the right place to do it.

Johnny: "I need to talk to you - right now."

???: "What's wrong?"

Johnny: "I left the company."

Straight in the face. Classic Johnny. He didn't have much sense of tact, and the idea that I could be shocked by this news probably hadn't even come to his mind at all. I stood there, open-mouthed, and wondered if he was serious. NOTBPW was the place where he became one of the most famous wrestlers Canada has ever had, and where he was able to do what he loves. But he didn't make jokes usually, and the look on his face made perfectly clear that he was absolutely serious.

???: "Why?"

Johnny: "Well, there's a couple of reasons. To be honest, I've been thinking about moving on for a while now. No concrete plans, nothing I was too sure about, but then, three days ago, Jeremy told me that I was on the card of Championship Wrestling."

???: "What about your back?"

Johnny: "Yeah, that's what I asked him. He didn't seem to care."

???: "That's very unlike him."

Johnny: "Let's say... he never issued such an order before. Anyway, that was the point in time when I decided that I needed a change. And that's why I'm moving to the United States."

Another news that surprised me quite a lot. Johnny had worked for USPW more than six years ago, but I never thought that he had any close ties to my home country.

Johnny (grinning): "You're pretty taciturn today. So... before you have to tickle it out of me... I'm gonna open my own wrestling promotion. I've always wanted to do that, and I think now's the time."

???: "But why in the United States?"

Johnny: "Because Canada is where my wrestling heart lies, and I don't want to become a threat to any of the local promotions we've got. I guess my name is too big here, and I want to start small. I want to work with rookies, guys who didn't have a chance to prove themselves yet or who got rejected, and build them up. Like I did with you."

I put on my thinking cap for a moment. Of course this meant that Johnny couldn't be my trainer any longer, and I could see in his face that it worried him. He decided to leave someone behind who owed everything he knew to him, and who was far from being a fully-trained wrestler. But because the United States were my home country and I had no family in Canada anyway, I was able to make a decision within seconds that someone else could've needed weeks for.

???: "Okay. So, when are we gonna leave?"

Johnny: "Look, Jared, I'm... wait, what did you say?"

http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj572/Xendarii/Dynasties/WPL/Jared%20Johnson_2_zpsbqxzmklq.jpg

Jared: "You may be an old man, but I'm pretty sure your ears are still working. If you're out of this place, there's nothing that holds me here. You're gonna need to take me with you."

Johnny: "There's no way I'll do that! You've got a written contract with Canada's biggest promotion, Jared, you have the privilege to wrestle in front of thousands of people here, earn a lot of money, become one of the most famous wrestlers this country has ever seen, just like I am right now. I'm not taking that away from you by letting you work in front of 30 people in a small hall somewhere in the United States."

His words were completely meaningless. I had already grabbed my workout gear and headed towards the locker room.

JARED! F'N! JOHNSON!

You have my full attention with this. Jared is one of my favourite guys in the CVerse.

That's awesome! I've actually spent a few hours thinking about who my user character and promotion owner should be, and when I finally came up with Bloodstone and Johnson, it just felt like it was the right choice.

Bloodstone won't have any ambition to be an active part of the shows at the beginning, mostly because his back injury really is health-threatening and he doesn't want to risk anything. He's also not too popular in the United States to completely mess up the show ratings SHOULD he take part in the shows at some point in the future. And obviously, as his protégé, Jared was the best choice for my user character. Apart from that, he's already a great worker.

Always liked the concept of WPL, but the AI always screws the pooch and hires the weirdest rosters. Will be interesting to see where you go with it.

I completely changed their product though. :D They've got Modern as Key Feature, Daredevil as Heavy and Traditional, Mainstream and Realism as Medium now (with no Face/Heel divide), because I feel like the resulting product fits the available workers in the US better and would be more fun to write.

Good luck my friend :) Will be keeping an eye on this one. Love it so far!

Thank you very much, Lloyd! Having you - as well as the two others - as readers really honours me, as you definitely belong to my favourite diary writers in this forum.

January 2013

WPL Office, Mid South, USA

http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj572/Xendarii/Dynasties/WPL/Jared%20Johnson_2_zpsbqxzmklq.jpghttp://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj572/Xendarii/Dynasties/WPL/Johnny%20Bloodstone_2_zpsyiidhzcm.jpg

It took me a few more weeks to move back to the United States. My contract with NOTBPW ran out on New Year's Day, and so I wrestled a last couple of shows and enjoyed the huge crowd cheering me - a feeling that I wouldn't get again for quite some time from now on. Then, finally, I took the airplane to Kentucky, where Johnny had registered and begun to set up the new promotion. It was called "Wrestling Premier League", and in a more than enthusiastic phone call, he already explained the concept of his new creation - fast-paced, hard-hitting and spectacular action, both featuring high-flying as well as technical wrestling. It sounded pretty good.

I visited him on the day after my arrival. He had set up a small office in a side street - surely less than he could afford with the money he'd earned working for NOTBPW, but he probably wanted to put every single dollar into the actual promotion and didn't want to waste anything for comfort he didn't feel like he needed anyway.

Jared: "Well, I guess... it's... a lovely place?"

Johnny (laughing): "Don't even try, Jared. I know that this is not what you're used to, but that's how most businesses start, you know? Small and humble."

Jared: "So, what's so urgent that you wanted to see me directly after I've arrived here? I didn't even have time to unpack my stuff because I checked in deep in the night yesterday."

I clearly didn't expect what came next. Again - a classic showing of Johnny going like a bull at a gate.

Johnny: "Listen - for me, this is the next step of my career. I've been a wrestler for eleven years now, and my body is starting to decline. I won't be an active part of WPL, at least not for now, and that's totally fine. You, however, took a huge step back. From a nationally noted company to a small promotion that hardly anybody even knows. I really had a bad conscience about that, and that's why I want you to... take it to the next level as well. I'd like you to help me with booking decisions."

Jared: "Are you serious? I'm 22, I don't really know anything about booking. How am I supposed to do that?"

Johnny: "You don't need to book our shows by yourself, of course. I'm gonna do the major work, but I want your input. Helps me to get a second opinion and some fresh ideas, and helps you to grow a sense for this business that most normal wrestlers never develop."

Only now I realised how much of an honour and what a great opportunity Johnny had just offered me.

Jared: "Alright, I'd be stupid to refuse such an offer. Seems like it was the right decision to leave Canada, huh?"

Johnny (laughing again): "Wait and see, Jared. I've got a feeling that booking a tiny promotion like WPL's probably gonna be could be a huge pain in the a**."

That was fine. I was absolutely happy with not losing Johnny as a mentor and gaining some new experience. Granted, I had no idea how wrestling in front of a small crowd would be like. I had watched a lot of indy shows, sure, but in fact I never had been part of one, because Johnny immediately had picked me up and brought me to NOTBPW when I came to Canada.

Johnny: "Anyways, welcome on board! Interested in seeing the roster I've managed to assemble for our first show?"

Jared: "Sure! Kick it off!"

We were sitting in our so-called "office" after a lengthy training session. Johnny had practically wrestled me into knots and shown me that I've got still much to learn once again. Not having matches at least once a week, often times even more frequently due to house shows, like I was used to from NOTBPW was unfamiliar for me, and I needed the training with Johnny more than ever to keep improving.

Johnny: "We've got our first show coming up in less than a week. I guess it's time to book it, don't you think so?"

Jared: "True."

Johnny: "Any suggestions?"

Of course not. I'd never booked a wrestling show before, and although I'd been part of many, I had absolutely no clue on how to do the theoretical stuff. At least we wouldn't have to care that much about storylines and things like that, because Johnny wanted our promotion to be wrestling-orientated above all.

Johnny: "Well, I didn't expect that anyway. I figured we'd start with a tournament, because we need a champion for our first title as soon as possible, and since almost all of our guys are virtually unknown in the whole country, it should be pretty interesting."

Jared: "Sounds good. Who do you want to become champion?"

Johnny: "Haven't decided on that yet. We'll see, I guess we need to watch these guys doing their job in the ring in front of some spectators before we can spot the guy who's worthy of it."

That sounded like becoming the first WPL World Champion was a big deal or something. Obviously the only relevant thing about it would be the fact that Johnny Bloodstone had been the one who created that title, and although an icon in Canada, he wasn't even that well-known in the United States in the first place. However, a wrestling promotion needs a championship and a champion, and thus I was curious what ideas Johnny had for the first round that would probably fill out the whole show.

Jared: "Okay, what are your plans? Who's gonna be my opponent? I'll be a part of the tournament, right?"

Johnny (laughing): "Sure you will. Here, I've pretty much got everything figured out, we just have to decide on how to order these matches on the card."

In a way, I was relieved that I wouldn't have to think out full matches for our first card. One step at a time, I thought to myself.

If you want me to know which wrestler of each match you personally prefer (who you would cheer for if you attended the show), highlight it differently from the winner, e.g. by making the name italic, underlined or anything like that. I'll refer to it in the shows by adjusting the crowd's reactions. The first prediction contest will include six shows and run until the end of June 2013.

Nice first roster! (That Bradley Blaze render is awesome!! I finally can see the Dallas Cowboy in him.)

This is the first time I see a WPL dynasty here. Good luck with your project.

Thank you! Yeah, I guess I pretty much hired all the good young unemployed US wrestlers. A name like Johnny Bloodstone, although his popularity is only in the 30s in that country, should suffice to get them interested in joining the promotion (especially since they've got no job anyway). And I too love the Bradley Blaze render, his default picture is absolutely awful.

KGleen gets the coloured treatment because of just how much I dislike him. Prototypical "guy" that gets hired at this level, all moves and no substance. The rest of the roster is fantastic but Glenn is just bleeeeeeeh.

:'D Alright, one of those 35 fans will scream his head off by insulting him. He'll have a VERY vocal enemy at every show. I understand you, but not hiring KC is just a no-go for a performance-based fed because of his amazing in-ring skills.

Firefly is more over, and should win this match.

Nigel Svensson vs. Bradley Blaze

The swede is the Bret Hart of this board. He can do no wrong and you must always cheer.

Joffy Laine vs. El Mítico Jr

"The Jackhammer" is a bit more over, but El Mitico will help you more in the end.

Joseph Benning vs. Remmy Honeyman

The Honeyman will take this battle.

Ernest Youngman vs. Riley McManus

The Atlantic Connection are bland on either side of the Atlantic.

Jared Johnson vs. Kevin Glenn

The two should be pretty close in overness -- I agree with MHero, I can't stand Glenn.

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the first episode of Wrestling Premier League's monthly show, broadcasted live and for free on the internet: Ring Warriors! I'm Samuel Curran, here with me is Mac Smith, and we're HYPED!"

Smith: "Honoured to be here with you, Sam! Tonight, we'll see the first round of a tournament that will determine our very first WPL World champion. All 12 wrestlers you'll see tonight will compete in it, with the six winners proceeding to the next round."

Curran: "Additionally, the two losers of tonight's longest matches will get the chance to redeem themselves, as they too will move on to round two and face each other. That also means that one of tonight's losers is guaranteed a place in the semi-finals!"

Smith: "And what a way to kick off this show: Amazing Fire Fly, without a doubt one of the most talented high flyers the independent scene has to offer, against Acid II, the protege of the famous Acid!"</div>

Amazing Fire Fly vs. Acid II

WPL World Championship Tournament: Round 1

Both men are great high flyers, and Amazing Fire Fly's flashiness is exceptional. Both men don't have that much psychology though, and that's why it's been a bit of a risk to put them in the opening contest that's crucial to get the fans engaged (in the end, we want them to come back). We've decided to let them wrestle a short, but spectacular match which Acid II manages to win pretty easily when Fire Fly misses a Moonsault from the top rope and allows his opponent to show his breathtaking Acid Rain Bomb.

Winner: Acid II (44)

Nigel Svensson vs. Bradley Blaze

WPL World Championship Tournament: Round 1

The second match of the night is a bit more open than the first one, with both competitors getting some good offence in. Bradley is only 19 years old and although he's very talented, it's apparent that he's got much to learn. Nigel, on the other hand, is a very good worker, and his experience (though only being 24 himself) proves to be enough to get over the "Dallas Cowboy" who finally has to tap out to the Hyper Extension Arm Lock.

Winner: Nigel Svensson (36)

http://i1268.photobucket.com/albums/jj572/Xendarii/Dynasties/WPL/Joffy%20Laine_2_zpspstznkzi.jpg

Joffy Laine comes out next, with an overly confident smirk on his face. None of the 35 people in attendance actually know or care about him, but that doesn't stop him from talking a bit about his upcoming match - and himself, of course.

Laine: "Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, you're looking at the NEXT BIG THING of United States wrestling! And you have the honour to be a part of my rise to glory right from the beginning!"

The reaction is more or less non-existing, but Joffy keeps his smirk.

Laine: "Tonight, I'm going to take the first step towards my first championship by beating that masked freak who calls himself 'El Mítico Jr'. And here's my promise: I'm going to beat him in under eight minutes, because there's NO chance in hell someone who hides behind a mask could ever match me!"

Joffy Laine vs. El Mítico Jr

WPL World Championship Tournament: Round 1

Joffy tries really hard to walk the talk, but struggles heavily against the technical superiority that is El Mítico Jr. The masked man who surprises the majority of the crowd with his huge arsenal of holds and throws, but the lack of any real high-flying moves you would expect from someone of his looks, even seems to draw a reaction from the crowd, as he's clearly supported more than his opponent. In the end, he humiliates Joffy by actually putting his promise into action when he hits a Northern Lights Suplex that's good enough for the three-count.

Winner: El Mítico Jr (42)

Joseph Benning vs. Remmy Honeyman

WPL World Championship Tournament: Round 1

An even and pretty disappointing match at the same time. While this is probably the most competitive bout so far, both men struggle to find the kind of chemistry they would've needed to get the small crowd engaged. Remmy has the chance to secure himself a victory when the referee get knocked out accidentally, but being probably the nicest guy in the WPL, he calmly waits until Kurt Lovenkrantz is back up again. Having missed his best opportunity, Remmy falls behind the longer the match goes and finally a Joe And Behold decides it in favour of Joseph. However, with this bout going for a full 16 minutes, Remmy should have a pretty good chance at securing himself a spot in the Lucky Losers match.

Winner: Joseph Benning (29)

Ernest Youngman vs. Riley McManus

WPL World Championship Tournament: Round 1

The Co-Main Event brings a very interesting contest. Ernest definitely is one of the brightest talents in US wrestling, being already incredibly skilled despite his young age. On the other hand, there's no doubt Riley is our most popular worker at this point in time - which admittedly doesn't mean much, but at least a few fans actually seem to know him. As a result, he's the definite crowd favourite going into this match, and it seems to give him a boost. Ernest still gets a lot of momentum and scores multiple near-falls, but after almost 17 minutes, a Slingshot Suplex puts an end to his endeavours. However, Ernest still isn't out of the tournament as it's already sure he'll be a part of next month's Lucky Losers match.

Winner: Riley McManus (47)

Ernest almost had it, but Riley's just too experienced and allowed himself no inattentiveness!"

Jared Johnson vs. Kevin Glenn w/ Roxy Kitten

WPL World Championship Tournament: Round 1

Kevin and Jared manage to pull off a great main event that's easily the highlight of our first show, as their styles seem to gel pretty well and they're granted enough time to tell a story. The match is completely even, with none of them really getting ahead at any point. However, after a good 13 minutes, Kevin starts to struggle and Jared is able to hit him with quite a few impactful moves that bring him to the brink of defeat. Seeing this, Roxy decides to get involved, hoping to drag out the match long enough for it to surprass the duration of Benning vs. Honeyman and therefore at least giving her client a spot in the Lucky Losers match. Kurt Lovenkrantz is more or less unfazed by her distractions though, and only five seconds before the timer would've run out, Jared rolls him up and score the three-count.

Winner: Jared Johnson (51)

Kevin Glenn is furious about his loss and immediately starts to shout at the referee who backs off and leaves the ring, probably fearing for his security. Meanwhile, Roxy joins her client, also looking quite p*ssed.

Roxy: "That's a farce! Did you see how fast that wannabe-referee counted? That was a two-count at the very most! Five seconds, Mr. Lovenkrantz, FIVE SECONDS would've been enough for Kevin to become a part of the Lucky Losers match. Tell me, what's the problem you've got with him? What did he do to you?"

Lovenkrantz simply shakes his head and leaves the room through the curtain separating the bar room from the backstage area, knowing that he didn't do anything wrong.

Roxy: "STAY! We demand the match result to be altered and Kevin to be declared the winner by disqualification! THIS WAS A CHEAT!"

When one of the 35 fans starts to shout "You deserve it!" towards Kevin Glenn, the duo in the ring actually gets even more angry, but with Lovenkrantz already gone and nobody willing to accede to their claims, WPL's very first show comes to a close with an ending that's not nowhere near as controversial as Kevin and Roxy are depicting it.

Curran: "They're just trying to do everything to keep Glenn in the tournament, Mac. He's indeed very unlucky to barely miss the timing he would've needed."

Smith: "Still, this is so disrespectful towards Jared Johnson who absolutely deserved the win."

Curran: "We might hear from this duo again next month, but for now, we're done. Acid II, Nigel Svensson, El Mítico Jr, Joseph Benning, Riley McManus, Jared Johnson, Remmy Honeyman and Ernest Youngman are the guys who advance to the next round of the WPL World Championsip Tournament, and all of them will be in action when Ring Warriors returns!"

Smith: "Stay tuned, folks, spread the word about Wrestling Premier League and come back next time!"</div>

An absolutely satisfying first show. After Johnny's words, I actually expected only two or three people to show up because of how unknown almost all of our wrestlers are, but I guess the Colorado Springs Bar has enough regular customers who come there every day no matter what, so hopefully we can use those people to build a solid fan base. Most matches went pretty well and I'm especially happy that I've managed to pull off such a good main event with Kevin, who's an exceptional worker at his age. We seem to have a very talented roster in general, and I hope all these guys will stay with us for a long while. Getting trained by a legend like Johnny Bloodstone should help with that.

To all of you, thank you for predicting and thereby taking part in this diary! Seems like some of you thought that I'd play with the 2014 database, especially KnowYourEnemy who made his predictions based on the worker's overness (although Amazing Fire Fly and Joffy Laine are at 0 popularity in 2013). It's also great to see the differing opinions on Kevin Glenn. I think most of you should be happy about the fact that I'm portraying him quite heel-ish, although technically there's no face/heel divide in the WPL.

Any feedback on the first show will be much appreciated. The card of WPL Ring Warriors 2 will be up within the next days.
