Cavs: New Owners, Same Mission

by Derek Johnson

In a surprise move, Detroit businessman Dan Gilbert has sold his majority stake in the Cleveland Cavaliers to a Cleveland-based group called Cuyahoga Sports Properties. CSP said in a prepared statement: "We thank Dan and his partners for their hard work and commitment to making the Cavaliers once again an elite team. We now intend to take the team to the next level. The fans are hungry, and we will do all we can to bring championship basketball to Cleveland."

In the 2015 NBA Finals, the Cavaliers lost to the Golden State Warriors 4-2.

The city of Cleveland has not won a championship in a major sport since the Browns won the NFL Championship in 1964. In 2008, the Cleveland City Stars of the United Soccer Leagues won the USL Second Division championship.

According to sources close to CSP, no personnel or player changes are being considered.

Unfinished Business

by Derek Johnson

The Cavaliers will begin the 2015-2016 season with a feeling that they have unfinished business hanging over their heads from last season. Stopped just two wins short of the title last June, a sense of urgency can be felt as the team begins shoot-arounds and workouts. The roster has been re-invigorated by the arrival of veterans Richard Jefferson at forward and Mo Williams at guard.

Williams played with LeBron James during the latter's first stint with the team, and returns to the Cavs a wiser and more seasoned player. He is added insurance against the prospect of further injury to star point guard Kyrie Irving. Williams gives the Cavs another option at either point or shooting guard, in addition to the formidable Australian Matthew Dellavedova, whose gritty defensive play and timely shooting made him a fan favorite during the grueling playoff games against Boston, Atlanta and Golden State.

Richard Jefferson is expected to come off the bench when James needs a rest. The Cavaliers hope to rest LeBron a lot more this season than last. The Cleveland superstar turns 31 years old at the end of December, and has accumulated quite a few miles during his career. Team insiders admit privately that the window is closing for LeBron. He has at best another 2-3 years before he begins to lost the battle against Father Time and become merely a very good basketball player.

This Year's Model: Deeper, More Flexible

by Derek Johnson

The starting lineup for the 2015-2016 Cleveland Cavaliers is as follows:

C - Timofey Mozgov

PF - Kevin Love

SF - LeBron James

SG - J.R. Smith

PG - Kyrie Irving

With the new arrivals and with players coming back from injury, the Cavs are expected to be a much deeper team this season. Bench players like forward/guard Iman Shumpert, forward/center Tristan Thompson, forward Richard Jefferson and guard Mo Williams could start for many teams. Forward/center Anderson Varejao will bring solid defense off the bench, and if he can contribute 15 minutes a night of his energetic style of play, the Cavaliers will be more than happy. Dellavedova, in addition to his defense, has proven himself to be a capable ball handler and willing passer. Forward James Jones brings veteran leadership and timely 3-point shooting. Jones plays few minutes, but is always ready when called upon.

Cavs Flatten Pelicans, But Love Out 8 Weeks

by Derek Johnson

The Cavaliers decisively defeated the New Orleans Pelicans last night in their first preseason game by a score of 129-113, but it was a bittersweet victory. Forward Kevin Love scored 24 points and had 3 rebounds in 21 minutes, good enough to be named Player of the Game, but fell awkwardly while chasing a loose ball in the 3rd quarter and went straight to the locker room. X-rays revealed a fracture to his left ulna or forearm. Love is expected to miss about 8 weeks.

"It's a big blow to us," said LeBron James after the game. "We need Kev out there, but we went through a lot of this last season, and for us it's 'next man up.' We've got plenty of guys here who can hold the fort until Kev gets healthy again."
