RAW this week starts off with the number one contender to the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, Cesaro, coming down to the ring. He takes a microphone and addresses the WWE Universe, asking them if they want to see him end the reign of Roman Reigns with the WWE World Heavyweight Championship. They cheer, and he says that he's going to do just that this Sunday at Payback.

The WWE World Heavyweight Champion comes out with a smirk and a laugh, telling Cesaro that that's not going to happen this Sunday or any other night. He says that Cesaro wants to be the guy, but there's only one person around here that's fit for being the guy, and that's Roman Reigns. Cesaro challenges Reigns to come down to the ring and prove that to him, but they're interrupted.

Shane McMahon comes out on the stage and says that both of them make very valid points, and they'll get to prove those points tonight, because each of them will have a match tonight, and they're going to pick each other's opponents. Tonight, it's Pick Your Poison.

 

Analysis: It was a very basic way to set up the two major matches for the night, but Pick Your Poison can usually have some pretty interesting matchups, so we'll see what happens. Call this a 65/100 for the opening.

This match has happened several times in recent memory, but all four men involved are pretty good at keeping things fresh, so it's not too repetitive. Regardless, the match is kept fairly short as

Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio come running down towards the ring. Sheamus hits Xavier Woods with a Brogue Kick to take him out before they pull Kofi Kingston off the apron. They assault Kofi, which distracts Big E long enough to let the Dudley Boyz hit 3-D on him for the victory.

 

Match Rating: 65/100

 

Once the match is over, Sheamus and Del Rio continue assaulting Kofi Kingston. Del Rio holds his arm around the ring post, letting Sheamus hit a Brogue Kick on it. Big E recovers and he, along with Xavier Woods chase Sheamus and Alberto Del Rio off, though Kofi is left holding his shoulder on the ground.

 

Analysis: It looks like Kofi Kingston will be taken out of the tag team title match at Payback, which would leave it to Big E and Xavier Woods to defend the belts. That makes for an interesting dynamic, since it's usually Big E and Kofi in the ring, with Xavier on the outside. This attack gets a 50/100

Backstage, Roman Reigns is asked about his Pick Your Poison match coming up later tonight. He says that no matter who Cesaro picks for him, he'll defeat them, just like he will Cesaro at Payback. He also mentions that he has the perfect opponent for Cesaro in mind, smirking as he walks off.

 

Analysis: Just a way to hype up the two Pick Your Poison matches coming up tonight, the first of which is taking place after the break. Call this a 65/100

Cesaro vs Dolph Ziggler

 

Really? Dolph Ziggler? While I like the guy, his recent Win/Loss record makes him less than a threat to the number one contender in this match. Regardless, I was looking forward to this match, and these two delivered just as I expected they would. Reigns was shown watching on a TV backstage as Cesaro hits Ziggler with a Neutralizer and picks up the victory.

Backstage, Chris Jericho is interviewed and asked about his match with Dean Ambrose upcoming at Payback. Jericho keeps things short and simple, saying that at Payback, he's going to teach Ambrose some respect for the veterans.

 

Analysis: Even keeping it short like this, Jericho proved why he's such a valuable asset on the microphone, and why him staying around WWE can only be good. Call it a 77/100

This one starts with AJ flying over the top rope to take the Wyatt family down as they approach the ring to start the match off quickly. With the Wyatt Family at ringside, AJ was on constant lookout for interference in this one as he worked towards the victory via Phenomenal Forearm.

 

Match Rating: 58/100

 

After the match, predictably, Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman attack AJ Styles. Strowman slams Styles down into the mat with his finisher, allowing Bray to scoop him up and hit Sister Abigail to stand tall above his Payback opponent.

 

Analysis: Styles has beaten two of the three members of the Wyatt Family in recent weeks, with him set to meet Bray at Payback. This attack leaves AJ out in the ring, and makes them look even heading into that match. 50/100

Ryback and The Miz w/ Maryse vs The Lucha Dragons

 

Though the Lucha Dragons are obviously more of a cohesive unit than Ryback and The Miz, Maryse on the outside of the ring was able to provide several key distractions along the way to keep the match even between the two teams. Miz went for a Skull-Crushing Finale on Kalisto, but the United States Champion turned it into Salida Del Sol and picked up a clean win.

Becky Lynch is backstage, when Sasha Banks confronts her. The Boss asks Becky if she really has her back, after what happened on Smackdown, or if she's only watching out for herself. Becky says that Sasha knows that's ridiculous, and Sasha asks "is it?" before walking away.

 

Analysis: It's good of them to tease some tension between the two to create more interest in the Women's Title match on Sunday. 46/100

This women's match saw two very competent women square off against one another. The two went back and forth, until

Becky Lynch comes out on the ramp, watching the match. Her presence distracts Sasha, though, allowing Naomi to roll her up from behind! Sasha manages to roll through it, though, and lock in the Banks Statement, forcing Naomi to tap out.

Charlotte runs into the ring from behind Sasha, hitting her from behind with the Women's Championship. Charlotte puts the boots to Banks until Becky hears the crowd's reaction and turns around, running her out from the ring. We go to commercial as Becky helps Sasha to her feet.

 

Analysis: A creative way to add more tension to the Becky/Banks alliance heading into Payback. 54/100

The Usos vs Blake and Murphy w/ Alexa Bliss

 

This is the first big match for Blake and Murphy, who start things off by jumping The Usos as soon as the bell rings. Blake and Murphy manage to cut the ring off, keeping Jey isolated from Jimmy for a while. Jimmy gets the hot tag, though, and manages to pick the pace up in this match. He looks to hit Blake with the splash off the top rope, but he's pushed off by Alexa Bliss, allowing Blake and Murphy to hit the Brainbuster/Frog Splash combo to pick up a huge win.

The next match saw two Canadians square off in the middle of the ring and lay it all on the line. Jericho dominates the action early, but Sami keeps fighting back and showing that underdog spirit that has made him so popular in NXT and companies before that. He hits his DDT through the turnbuckle on the outside, and things look to be going his way until

Kevin Owens attacks him from behind! The referee calls this one a disqualification win for Zayn.

 

Match Rating: 64/100

 

The match is over, but the action between Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn is just heating up. Zayn fires back on Owens with a series of right hands of his own, and the two brawl wildly. Any time that one gets some distance from the other, they close it immediately. The action spills over the barricade, and they fight there for several minutes until security comes and seperates the two.

 

Analysis: This one should be a great match on Sunday. This was done as a way to promote that they'll do anything to get to each other, and it worked. 50/100

Backstage, AJ Styles is asked how he's feeling heading into his Payback match against Bray Wyatt. AJ says that the Wyatt Family has been making his life hell since the night after Wrestlemania, but he looks into the camera and says that Bray knows what they say about Payback.

 

Analysis: Talking has never been Styles' strong point, so this one was kept short and simple, but it seems like he's getting better at it. 68/100

Roman Reigns vs Dean Ambrose

 

These two are best friends, and it shows in their chemistry in the ring for this one. They seem hesitant to hurt each other at the beginning, but soon after it turns into a fairly wild brawl between the two, with neither holding back. During the chaos,

Chris Jericho made his way down to ringside. This distracted Ambrose, but Reigns refused to take advantage that way, which JBL said was a stupid idea. Cesaro agreed, saying that he'll have to be more cut-throat than that if he wants to win this Sunday. In the end, Reigns ends up hitting Ambrose with the Spear anyways, picking up the victory.

 

Match Rating: 72/100

 

As Reigns exits the ring, Jericho enters, setting his eyes on Ambrose. Before he can do much, Reigns hits Jericho with the Superman Punch, knocking him from the ring.

 

Analysis: Roman looks strong heading into Payback, this time at the expense of Chris Jericho. 74/100

 

By the time Reigns turns around, Cesaro is in the ring. The number one contender lifts the WWE World Heavyweight Champion in the air...Neutralizer! The show ends with Cesaro standing tall, holding the championship above a fallen Roman Reigns.

 

Analysis: Cesaro looks strong to end the show, which casts my doubts about how he'll fare at Payback. I guess we'll find out this Sunday. 60/100

 

This show was all about giving a final strong push to Cesaro/Reigns, but it also advanced the Styles/Wyatt feud, and added a new wrinkle to the New Day/League Of Nations match that should make things a bit more interesting. Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch may or may not be able to trust each other, which opens up all kinds of possibilities for that match on Sunday as well. In terms of in-ring action, there weren't any Match Of The Year contenders, but it was a solid show that I'd consider a 73/100
