Question for Graphic Makers Out There Who Use Paint.Net

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, sorry if this is in the wrong area, but with all modders usually here I figured his would be the best place to answer my question.

Now for those who use Paint.Net for graphics, I am new to the program and have tinkered with a few things.

Now I hear there are plug ins you can add to the program from the forums, my question is, which plug ins do you guys use? And what would be best for making logos and possibly belts in the future?

I use paint.net but mainly use it to make alts and loading screens. I have made a couple of event logo's for personal use the only thing I can say is download different fonts for different companies for example I downloaded an espn font so I could make event logo's for early 80's mods. Hopefully this will go you started until a graphic logo expert chimes in.

AA's assistant

http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/15260-plugin-index/&do=findComment&comment=252078

Just press show hidden content and you find it. When you download it put it in Program -> Paint -> Effects

Inside Paint.Net you will now find it in Effects -> Objects

With it all cuts will look perfect with softened edges.

I use this when cutting pics of people it helps with getting the background away from what you cutting out it works. wonders.

Yeah AA's Assistant is my favorite effect.

Some other free effects that i use very often:

Drop Shadow

Outline Object (Boltbait)

Color Flip/Rotate

Black and Alpha +

Color Balance +

Hue / Saturation +

PS Emboss

Metallize

Sharpen +

PS Filter (to run various Photoshop effects)

Eye Candy 4000/Bevel Boss

Some of the effects above might be included in the default effects. I don't remember.

I also use Text Pro, but it's not free and you have to buy it if you want to use it.

How to create face or body paint in Paint.net

How to create face or body paint in Paint.net

For this example i will use a easy picture and in this case a King Kong Kennedy render.

http://i.imgur.com/ZlF5oHA.jpg

Step 1

Open the King Kong Kennedy Picture in Paint.net and select the Magic Wand tool. Adjust the tolerance setting to somewhere between 40 and 50 and cut away the blue CV background.

http://i.imgur.com/yFhjzrq.png

Step 2

Now select the AA's Assistant tool to get perfect smooth edges.

Step 3

Now i usually select the Eraser tool and increase the width to between 40 and 50. I use this the cut the top of the head, to make look round and less square.

http://i.imgur.com/7S0daqw.png

Step 4

On the right side of Paint.net you'll find Layers. Now you duplicate layer, so that you get two layers with King Kong Kennedy.

Step 5

Create a new layer and paste the CV background into it. You'll find the CV background in the CV default picture folder.

Step 6

Add another layer and make it the top layer. To make Smurph face- or bodypaint select the color R 63, G 91 and B 255. You can enter this in Color >> More.

Step 7

Depending of the picture either choose the Paintbrush or Paint Bucket tool in the new layer. Fill everything blue on top of the existing render.

http://i.imgur.com/HnHa9lk.png

Step 8

Select the top layer of the two layers with King Kong Kennedy. Go to the Adjustment menu and use the Black and White effect.

Step 9

Select the blue face and body paint layer. Go to Layer properties and select Overlay. Test to set the between 0 and 255. I usually have it between 200-255 depending on the render being used.

Step 10

Add a new layer on top.

Step 11

Go to the King Kong Kennedy layer and use the Ellipse Select tool. I this case i will use the Ellipse select tool to copy the eyes and mouth parts.

Step 12

When you have copied the eyes and mouth parts. Paste them in the top layer. Use the Eraser tool to cut away the skin outside the eyes and mouth.

http://i.imgur.com/3dnBYLs.png

Step 13

Now use the AA's Assistant tool on the eyes and mouth parts to make them perfectly smooth.

Step 14

Select the blue layer and use the eraser tool to cut away the blue parts that outside the render of King Kong Kennedy. When you have cut away the major parts use the AA's Assistant to get perfectly smooth edges.

Thanks Asaemon this is a big help always struggled when doing face paint for alts and also can't wait the facial hair tutorial.

You're welcome. I'll try to create the facial hair tutorial during this weekend. Actually it's pretty simple and easier/quicker than the face/bodypaint tutorial.

Just tried it on the same render you did

http://i1137.photobucket.com/albums/n511/hitman74/King%20Kong%20Kennedy_zpsrn6jb0qh.jpg

Looks just like yours now I can make smurfs all day long!!! lol Thanks for the help time to make some new alts.

Looks great. To quickly change his color just use the Color Flip/Rotate effect and he'll become green or red in a second.

Here is the smurph hat i used. I cut it from some vector or render and tweaked it.

<strong>Step 4</strong></p><p> </p><p>

Paint the stubble, moustache or hair.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i.imgur.com/NYAbrea.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 5</strong></p><p> </p><p>

Now their are two different choices.</p><p> </p><p>

Choice number one is using the Noise effect -> Add Noise -> with settings 50, 0 and 100</p><p> </p><p>

Choice number two is to instead use the Grain effect. Both effects pretty much does the same.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 6 A</strong></p><p> </p><p>

Now their are also two different choices.</p><p> </p><p>

Choice number one is using the Gaussian Blur effect and then go to the layer effect and choose Multiply or Overlay and test different Opacity level between 0-255. Use the Eraser tool to shape the stubble. If you create a weak stubble you can very quickly create another alt with an stronger stubble by simply using the duplicate layer option.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i.imgur.com/V5BLjhF.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 6 B</strong></p><p> </p><p>

Instead of using the Gaussian Blur effect use the Color Flip/Rotate and select the white color to the right. Now go into layer properties and select multiply. Play around with the opacity levels. Use the Eraser tool to shape the stubble. If you create a weak stubble you can very quickly create another alt with an stronger stubble by simply using the duplicate layer option.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i.imgur.com/7jo8O4h.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

You can also use either of these two methods to add more depth to existing hair.</p><p> </p><p>

How to add some extra light to skin

How to add some extra light to skin

I made this using a tutorial i found somewhere on the Paint.net forums.

http://i.imgur.com/1RaNzy7.png

Save the picture above and open up in Paint.net

Open up a picture, maybe a picture where you think the skin could use some extra light. I think it works pretty well together with Jsilvers renders and possibly also with Sockpuppets. I haven't tried Sockpuppets yet.

In this example i used this render of The Masked Fury

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/asaemon/TEW%20Alts/The%20Masked%20Fury.jpg

Now add a new layer.

Set the new layer to overlay.

Paste the ball in the new layer and play around with the opacity setting. Maybe set it between 100 and 200 depending on which picture you're using.

Move the ball around and when the skin looks goods. Use Eraser tool and AA's Assistant to cut away all light outside the skin.

http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/asaemon/TEW%20Alts/The%20Masked%20Fury%202.jpg

I used the same technique on the Skull DeBones/Vengeance alt i recently posted.

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><span style="font-size:14px;"><strong>Using and creating hair in Paint.net</strong></span></p><p> </p><p>

The Google Image search is your friend and try to search for "hair png" or something similar, you will find some hairstyles with transparent background that can be very useful.</p><p> </p><p>

You can also create some custom hairstyles. I found the picture below on Google Images, and have been using it a lot recently.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i.imgur.com/fke1Zg7.png</span></p><p> </p><p>

Save the picture and open it in Paint.net</p><p> </p><p>

Now resize the picture to 300 x 225 or to any size you prefer. You will find resize in the Image menu</p><p> </p><p>

Now open a CV worker picture and add a new layer on top of the worker picture</p><p> </p><p>

Copy any of the hair pieces and paste it into the new layer, by repeating this process with new layers and also use the flip horizontal and Rotate / Zoom effects. You will find both effects in the Layers menu.</p><p> </p><p>

When you're finished simply merge the hair layers together and you have you own custom hairstyles like the ones i've created and added below.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="font-size:14px;">Decreasing light and skin color</span></strong></p><p> </p><p>

The ball comes to use in the other direction to. Here i used it to decrease the original light.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i1230.photobucket.com/albums/ee489/asaemon/TEW%20Alts/Akima%20Brave.jpg</span><span>http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l98/da_kine_brah/Renders/AkimaBrave_zps14a8411c.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p>

The right picture is Sockpuppets original render. Sockpuppet always makes top class renders, sometimes with perfect light and sometimes with experimental light. <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

On the left picture i used the ball to tweak the colors and light, by selecting negation instead of overlay.</p></div><p></p><p></p>

<p>Using and tweaking beards in Paint.net</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong><span style="font-size:14px;">Using and tweaking beards in Paint.net</span></strong></p><p> </p><p>

The Google Image search is your friend and try to search for "beard png", "full beard png" or something similar, you will find some beards with transparent background that can be very useful.</p><p> </p><p>

You can also tweak beard and create some custom beards by building the beard in several layers. I found the picture below on Google Images.</p><p> </p><p>

<img alt="691f9ada90a90e069e24e75828ddba42.jpg" data-src="https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/69/1f/9a/691f9ada90a90e069e24e75828ddba42.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 1</strong></p><p>

Open Paint.net and paste the beard above as a new picture</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 2</strong></p><p>

Now you will find out that the background wasn't transparant, but it was white. But don't worry we will use a nice effect to fix that</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 3</strong></p><p>

I'm not sure if this effect is in the default software or not. But if it isn't you will find it <a href="http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/15260-plugin-index/&do=findComment&comment=252078" rel="external nofollow">here</a> The effect is called <em>Black and White Alpha+</em>, so if you don't have it just download it and paste it in the folder named <em>Paint.net -> Effects</em>. You will find this effect in the <em>Adjustments menu</em>. So just use the effect and the beard will be perfect without any white background.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 4</strong></p><p>

Now we will use a CV render. I will once again use King Kong Kennedy. So open the King Kong Kennedy render in Paint.net and we will give him a nice beard.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i.imgur.com/ZlF5oHA.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 5</strong></p><p>

Select the beard picture. The beard might be a little bigger than King Kong, so go to the <em>Image menu</em> and select <em>resize</em>. Try with the width 140 and press ok.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 6</strong></p><p>

Copy the beard and go to the King Kong Kennedy picture. Go to <em>layers</em> and select <em>add new layer</em>. Paste the beard in the new layer and move it to the right position.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i.imgur.com/EIinWEH.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p>

So now it should look something like this. It looks ok, but you can see through it so now we will adjust the thickness of the beard.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 7</strong></p><p>

One thing that i often use to tweak the thickness is multiple layers. So select the beard layer and use <em>duplicate layer</em>.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i.imgur.com/jNc1lSV.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 8</strong></p><p>

Now its a full black beard and what i usually do is to tweak the layer properties of the top "beard" layer. There are several mode settings available, and <em>normal</em> is the default. So test to select normal and the opacity level of 80.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i.imgur.com/AZ5dzCc.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p>

Now it should look like this. A grown beard, but not totally dark and you can still see detail.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="font-size:8px;">Ok so if you want to continue expand or tweak the beard, just copy a piece of the beard using the </span><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>rectangle</em></span><span style="font-size:8px;">, </span><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>lasso</em></span><span style="font-size:8px;"> or </span><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>ellipse select</em></span><span style="font-size:8px;"> tool and paste it in a new layer underneath the existing beard layers. You can do this with one side and when that side looks good use </span><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>duplicate layers</em></span><span style="font-size:8px;"> and then go the </span><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>Layers menu</em></span><span style="font-size:8px;"> and select </span><span style="font-size:8px;"><em>flip horizontal</em></span><span style="font-size:8px;">. I'm not using this method this time, but it's very effective when tweaking/building hair/beard of whatever. This is the method i have been using when creating hair for alt and masked workers.</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 9</strong></p><p>

Ok so we have a bearded King Kong Bundy, Maybe we want to tweak the beard color. There are several effects that can be used like Hue/Saturation+, Color Balance+, Color Mixer or Color Flip/Rotate. If you are missing any of these you find them in the Plugin index here. Download and place them in the Effects folder <a href="http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?/topic/15260-plugin-index/&do=findComment&comment=252078" rel="external nofollow">Paint dot net Plugin Index</a>.</p><p> </p><p>

This time we will use Color Flip/Rotate. Select the top beard layer and then go to Color Flip/Rotate. You will find it the <em>Effects menu -> Color</em>. Pick a yellow color. Now the beard is very bright yellow. You can also go the layer settings and chose normal and the opacity level of 255 again, since we are not using black anymore.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i.imgur.com/eNrYnDy.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 10</strong></p><p>

Ok so now we want to tweak the yellow color, so this time we will use the Hue/Saturation+ effect. Here you can fool around and give poor King Kong a purple beard, but i will be nice and go Hue -35, Saturation 40 and Lighness -20 that gives him a reddish/brown beard.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i.imgur.com/V8afxta.jpg</span></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Step 11</strong></p><p> </p><p>

Ok so now we have a brown beard, but we will test one final thing to see if we can improve the beard some more. Ok so select the brown beard layer and go <em>into layer settings</em>. Now select difference and the opacity level of 255.</p><p> </p><p>

<span>http://i.imgur.com/vTwx5jb.png</span></p><p> </p><p>

Now King Kong Kennedy has a thick brown beard.</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="font-size:8px;">Now you can start a new TEW save, select USPW, hire King Kong Kennedy and change his alter ego to Giant Kennedy or Giant Redwood Jr. </span><img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

</p></div><p></p><p></p>
