Multiplayer Real World Game

Recommended Posts

Well, we've received some interest, so while we build the game, I've blatantly stolen some suggestions from Derek B's multiplayer thread from the 2013 TEW forum that should help us in this game. All credit for the information below goes to Derek B, and I've also copied the link to his original thread here:http://www.greydogsoftware.com/forum/showthread.php?t=521870&highlight=multiplayer

FOR GAME DETAILS, SEE SECOND POST IN THIS THREAD

Activity: This is the most important aspect of any multiplayer game. Even in games with 3 or 4 people there have been lengthy period of miscommunication about player turns and delays in passing the files on, which makes for a slow game. With this many people playing a game, it’s going to be almost a requirement that you check for your turn on a daily basis, if not repeatedly per day. There’s nothing more frustrating than waiting for someone to take a turn, so being active is important, moreso in the biggest games that are likely to be played. Your turn might only take one minute to do, but if you aren't there to do it then it can take days. So activity in a big game is important.

File Sharing: The files in a multiplayer game are going to have to be passed around constantly so everyone will need access to the files. For this I suggest using Dropbox, which is a helpful little program that sits on your computer and automatically allows you to update the game files as long as your computer is connected to the internet. By having one folder for the files (possibly even for the game itself if that works), a folder for some useful information and a file that gets it’s name changed to show whose turn it is, there should be no miscommunication errors or unnecessary delays in taking turns. Everyone should be able to access these files, making it possible to leave notes for other players on what to do for your turn, to ask questions of people and generally communicate about things.

Communication: Perhaps the key to everything. Whether it be about booking plans, potential roster steals by or from other companies or just gossip about your game, you’re going to need to be in communication with the other players. If possible, everyone should be able to talk about their game somewhere, whether that means setting up a facebook group, creating a thread on GDS somewhere or using MSN or IRC… the more people talk, the better the game is for everyone as it prevents miscommunications and promotes quick gameplay.

Trust: Again, linking back to everything above. You should be able to trust all of your fellow players. If you feel that you have to password protect your game then it’s going to slow everything down if your turn shows up and no-one can get past it. Likewise, there shouldn’t need to be lots of rules to govern player behaviours in a game. If you can’t trust people to behave in a way that is fun for everyone, or if you don’t think you can have fun with particular other players involved, then the multiplayer game is probably going to be doomed to failure before it begins. Though with that said, talking about anything that could be an issue before it comes up will make sure things work out well, so again communication is the key.

The Latest Patch: If you are playing a multiplayer game then everyone needs to be using the same version of the game at all times to ensure that nothing goes wrong. Whenever a new patch comes out people should make sure everyone else knows about it and upgrade immediately. It’ll ensure that everyone is on the same page and it’ll make sure that no unexpected problems pop up. Again, communication is the key here and everyone will have to pay attention to make sure that everyone keeps up with this.

You need to have the mod downloaded, otherwise it won't work. Please ensure you have the mod already installed. Also, you need to have the latest patch downloaded, which you can always find on the first page of the forums. All avatars will begin the game with a reputation of High, mainly based on the names chosen. That allows us some ability to pull FA's and deals but still presents some challenge.

As soon as I have answers on User Talent points from everyone, I'll take my turn and get the save file added to dropbox.

I would be interested though fair warning I am absolutely horrible at the game.

Oh, I'm not great either lol. I don't care about your skill level, I'm more interested in your commitment to sticking with the game

Whatever we decide.Figured I'd find 2 or 3 people interested, and then we'd decide how to play.

I'll be sending everyone Dropbox invites shortly. Again, please make sure you know how to save the file to Dropbox once you've taken your turn. You must copy the save file into the Dropbox folder. If you have questions, let me know ASAP.

To save time, I can set up everyone's avatars and take the first turn (don't worry, you all get to take your turns before anything I've done takes effect). To do that, I need to know how each player wants to spend their 25 user talent points. I'll reach out to everyone via DM for that info.

Finally, perhaps we need to look into a live-style chat to communicate as well? Or is everyone comfortable asking questions and communicating via the forums, DMs and email if necessary?

Welp, the newest patch is causing some issues for me, but once it gets straightened out, I'll get the game to you guys. As soon as I updated to patch 1.10, my game now auto-crashes when I try to start a new game. I've posted in the atch thread, hopefully it's resolved soon.

We're up and running! My turn is complete - Motor, you're up!

Also, after going through the process, I've updated the file detailing how to upload the save file to dropbox, and added a file of how to download the file and add it to your game. Please read these to make sure you're familiar with the process, and let me know if you have questions.
