Sting stood in the centre of the ring, with a significant proportion of the WCW roster gathered around him.

Sting:
This last Wednesday night I had a chance to regain the WCW World title, to put myself back up on top of the mountain, to be... The Man once again.

He paused, allowing the crowd to react to his words.

Sting:
No question, I wanted the belt back. I wanted to feel it in my hands, to strap it around my waist, to know that I’d been to the top of the mountain once, and made it back again. They say that winning the World title once isn’t the hardest thing, winning it the
second
time is. Well, I’m certainly having trouble getting there.

Sting:
And it’s not just me. The Dangerous Alliance controls almost all the gold in this company – only Randy and Scott have titles that aren’t held by the Alliance or their ‘friends’ in the Diamond Exchange. And even then, the Alliance did their best to have those titles taken away from Scott when they injured his brother.

Sting:
Commissioner Ventura took office with the belief that the strong will survive – whether that’s physically or mentally strong. The Alliance are both, but it helps them a
lot
that there’s five, six, even
seven
of them working together in a business that’s usually about ones or twos. Now, I know I can call on friends to help me, and likewise they can ask for my help, but getting everyone organised the way that the Alliance does... That’s not easy. Maybe it’s impossible – how Paul E. Dangerously and Madusa keep those five egos in check is beyond me... But for one match, one brutal, gruelling, chaotic, bloody match... I think I can find four allies that can stand with me. In fact, I know one of them already – Scott Steiner.

Steiner stepped forward, his title belt slung over one shoulder. The Michigan standout has seemed on edge of late – and little wonder - but even by those recent standards he barely seemed in control.

Steiner:
Dangerous Alliance, for what you did to my brother, I want you to suffer, and I will
make
you suffer – inside that steel cage. But make no mistake, if I get my hands on
any
of you before then... you’ll pay for it. Maybe enough that you don’t make it to War Games, or maybe just enough that when I get you inside the cage, you come in with a bad leg, or a bad arm, something to make it that much more fun when the cage door shuts, and you’re locked in there with me!

Sting, normally the voice of reason, nodded.

Sting:
Austin, Rude, all of you... You had to know what you were doing, going after Scott and his brother. They call them the Steiner animals for a reason. I wouldn’t stand in Scott’s way of getting in the cage – it never crossed my mind. I wonder if it ever crossed yours, what you were unleashing?

Sting:
As to the other three spots-

VKUG6cr.jpgcm7EO0B.jpg

Armstrong:
Excuse us, Sting.

The Young Pistols walked down the aisle, and Sting looked at them with raised eyebrows.

Sting:
Uh, Steve, Tracy, if you guys want in, well, I can see-

Smothers:
No, don’t get us wrong, sounds like a fight and a half... But our beef with the Alliance is more business than personal, at least right now.

They entered the ring and stood before Sting and the others.

Armstrong:
See, we’ve been chasing the United States tag titles for a long time now. Now they’re with the Calgary Connection, and every time we line up on them, something happens to come and pull us up like a lame horse.

Smothers:
Now, we know you’re thinking about how to test who makes it into the cage with you. You’ve got three spots to fill, and we’ve got an inkling for what you’re thinking – tryout matches, right?

Sting nodded.

Smothers:
Sure, that makes sense. Just make sure, when you go to Commissioner Ventura, you tell him to leave the Calgary Connection free sometime. See, we’ve got tired of asking. Now we’re
demanding
a match with them.

Armstrong:
And we figure that Commissioner Ventura will see for sure that giving us that match will be the right move... and who knows, maybe you or Scott Steiner or Randy Savage or someone will decide that coming down and beating up on the Alliance some will help get you in shape for War Games, especially if their buddies decide to get involved.

Sting couldn’t help but smile, as in the background Rhodes, Savage and Steiner all nodded.

Sting:
You never know, you may be right.

Dangerously:
I can’t listen to this any further. This is collusion, Ross! You have Sting and his buddies plotting to take the United States tag titles from the Calgary Connection. What possible justification can there be to allow such blatant scheming, such remorseless skulduggery against the interests of my clients?

Ross:
The strong survive, Paul.

Sting:
For the other three spots, I’ve asked for people to step forward, and I see a lot of potential in the group around me – The Thrillseekers have got energy and youth on their side, they graduated from the famous Hart family dungeon so have submission skills that would be useful in War Games, and they have the Dirtiest Player In The Game guiding them... although not here tonight, I notice. Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham, two men with as much reason to strike a blow against the Alliance as I have. Ricky Steamboat, who would be WCW World champion right now if the Alliance had a fraction of the honour of the Dragon. Nikita Koloff, who stood atop the mountain and fought all comers... Yes, I know how that feels, and I know how badly you want that title back, badly enough to go into War Games. Randy Savage, the Macho Man, not long in WCW but already with an axe to grind with the Alliance. Ron Simmons, always looking up, and right now the Dangerous Alliance are trying to put an unbreakable glass ceiling in your way. The WCW Special Forces, standing for what’s right, no matter what the cost. Marcus Bagwell, a target of the Alliance’s petty bullying tactics.

Sting:
Each of you has good reasons for wanting to fight the Dangerous Alliance, but I can’t walk into that cage with just anyone at my side. I need to know what each of you brings, so over the next few weeks I’ll be teaming up with you in matches against strong opponents to see what you can bring to the fight, and I’ve arranged for you to have matches teaming with each other to see how you work together. Based on those matches... I’ll be choosing who goes into War Games with Scott and I against the Dangerous Alliance!

WCW Hotline Show Notes

9X7NP07.jpg

How many opponents would it take to stop the Ultimate Warrior? He says he’ll fight anyone, anytime, any size or number of opponents. How many people are there who can really stay the course against the muscleman? One who we think might be interested in trying is Cactus Jack – surely he’s crazy enough! But after going toe-to-toe with Nikita Koloff at the Clash, the unpredictable Cactus was nowhere to be found, even if Harley Race seemed to be expecting him!

The night’s main event saw Sting and Barry Windham in action against the new NWA tag team champions, Steve Austin and Arn Anderson. This was a downright blistering contest, with all four men in impressive form, and Steve Austin seemingly in particular confident mood after claiming his latest gold in WCW. Austin and Anderson remained on the same page throughout, and that teamwork delivered impressive results as they wore down Windham and Sting, but the crowd favourites simply would not stay down, no matter what punishment was laid on them. As the crowd roared, Windham clotheslined Anderson over the top rope, nearly wiping out Madusa on the outside. Confronted with two opponents eager to take him down, Austin took the sensible – if less honourable – route of thumbing Sting in the eyes and kicking Windham between the legs, drawing the disqualification for his team but buying him enough time to bail out of the ring and help Anderson and Madusa to the back as Sting and Windham accepted the fans’ applause and cheers in the ring!

As Sting’s allies set out to show what they’re capable of, Scott Steiner and Randy Savage set the pace with a victory over Loud And Proud, although we can’t help but feel that both Johnny B. Badd and Scotty Flamingo are missing a trick if they never share fashion tips with the Macho Man!

For Ricky Steamboat and Dustin Rhodes, direct competition with the Calgary Connection was the name of the game. The veteran and second generation star took the fight to their opponents in this non-title match, but the decisive moment came with the appearance of the Young Pistols in the aisle, distracting the Connection just enough for Rhodes to hit a Running Bulldog on Hart to pick up the win for his team! The result clearly did nothing for Rick Rude’s mood as he interrupted Marcus Bagwell’s interview time to warn the youngster “and his buddies” that only pain awaited them in War Games, “so don’t try too hard, kid. You could have a long career – just not if you get in that cage with me and the Dangerous Alliance!” Bagwell, for his part, was left looking somewhat thoughtful after Rude’s words of warning.

Ric Flair has been easing himself back into competition over the last couple of weeks, teaming with the Thrillseekers in six-man matches. Here they faced the York Foundation, and came out on top in the match – but owe a debt to Thomas Rich, who floored Terence Taylor behind the referee’s back. Clearly issues still exist between the York Foundation and its former member!

The first defence of Shawn Michaels’ Television title was a successful one, as the Rough Diamond came out on top over the Patriot with a Teardrop Suplex. Afterwards, Michaels was celebrating with his Diamond Exchange allies when Michael Hayes dropped by to catch up with his old friend Diamond Dallas Page – but Michaels didn’t seem too happy to have his party interrupted, even by the legendary Freebird! No doubt his mood was improved later on when the Diamond Exchange got their shots in on Bret Hart, Diamond Studd conceding a DQ loss to the Hitman, but Page leaving Hart down after a Diamond Cutter!

Show rating: A

OOC: Not so much a big surprise that Arn Anderson would get an A* performance in the tag match, but Steve Austin, too? That’s three of the Dangerous Alliance (together with Pillman) who can deliver that, and Owen and Rude typically score A’s. Can you tell I was a big fan of the Alliance?

I do think that the faces need some elevation, though, which is why the next few weeks will see Sting etc. getting more screen time – and coming out on top in most, if not all, of their matches... But the original 1992 War Games match is a stone cold classic. If you have WWE Network, be sure and check it out. WCW was briefly on fire in the first half of 1992, and this for me was the company’s peak.

I admit that I was a huge mark for the DA back when they were around. WCW fumbled on that one as they could have done so much more especially since the Horsemen had disbanded and Flair was in WWF.

Also like how you are working Commissioner Ventura, I always enjoyed Jesse even seeing him live back in the old PNW territory in Washington State.

Make that two successful Television title defences for the Rough Diamond, Shawn Michaels, who pinned Dean Malenko on Sunday night after a Teardrop Suplex. Michaels would also be at ringside with Kimberly to watch his Diamond Exchange teammates providing moral support to his allies as they tackled the trio of the All American Ron Simmons, the Patriot and Firebreaker Chip. The Diamond Exchange came out on top when Studd pinned Chip with his feet on the ropes – an unconvincing win, perhaps, but the Dangerous Alliance will not be shy of such tactics. Will Sting be impressed by a good performance alone? Sting himself took the lead in the main event, siding with Barry Windham and Lance Storm against Mr Hughes and the One Percenters. The popular trio were victorious when Windham floored Ron Harris with a Lariat to pick up the pin. Have Windham and Storm impressed the team captain? With just three spots in the team remaining, both will hope so!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Rick Rude delivered a ferocious beating to the Italian Stallion before taking the microphone and warning Sting and his buddies that more of the same awaited anyone who stepped inside the steel cage with him at Wrestle War. Ric Flair seemed pretty animated as he hyped up Chris Jericho and Lance Storm ahead of their matches this Sunday night. Is the Nature Boy getting his head back in the game? We can only hope! For Jericho’s part, he teamed with Dustin Rhodes and Marcus Bagwell as this young trio tackled the York Foundation, but once more it was Thomas Rich who proved decisive, tripping Taylor as he tried to suplex Rhodes and holding his leg to stop him kicking out of the pin.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Segment of the Night – Who controls Cactus Jack?

iClB5w2.jpg

IByjvix.jpgQeU8n6c.jpgRGONUj8.jpg

Harley Race stood in the centre of the ring with Mr Hughes and the One Percenters looming behind him.

Race:
Cactus Jack... You’ve got a lot of the devil in you, son, and I
like
that. No-one ever stepped up to the top of this business, no-one even got far up the ladder, without having a bit of nasty about them. And you, Cactus, have more than most.

Race:
But make no mistake, Cactus. That’s not enough, not these days. I offered you a helping hand, out of respect to a tough guy who’d have fit right in when I was winning the World title again and again and again. I might even say you remind me a little of myself, although I was never crazy enough to throw myself onto concrete floors just in case it hurt the other guy more.

Race:
But Cactus, it’s time to come out here and pick your side. You know that the Dangerous Alliance won’t take you. Dangerously used you as his stalking horse to keep Sting busy, but now he’s got five champions and he doesn’t need you any more. I don’t see you in the York Foundation – I don’t think you’d suit the fancy clothes they wear, and what you do won’t fit any computer program.

Race:
Maybe you could run off to Sting and get on his side for War Games. I can imagine he’d see the benefit from having a wild competitor like you on his side... except I don’t think Sting likes you or trusts you, so that’s out.

Race:
So that leaves us, Cactus. The only choice, and the best choice. I got you cleared for action, and that was just the start. Join us, Cactus. Join-

yUagvAG.jpg

Cactus Jack walked down the aisle, a slight limp to his walk but otherwise looking in good shape for someone who went to war with Nikita Koloff barely a week before.

Cactus:
Join you? Join you, Harley? Tell me... Why’d I want to do that?

Harley stared at Cactus for a long, long moment before replying.

Race:
Cactus, we agreed that I’d introduce you to my personal doctor, and in return you’d join forces with us.

Cactus:
Did we? Did we, Harley? Did we
really
? Or did you talk a
lot
, and decide that you had Cactus Jack on board? Yeah, your quack did his job, he got me cleared to fight, and for that he got a sack of cash. Me and him, we’re square, and I barely beat him up at all to thank him.

Cactus:
But you and me, Harley? What’s that, what’s that going to do for me? Tell me, Harley, what can you do for Cactus Jack? What can anyone do for Cactus Jack that I can’t or won’t do for myself, or to myself?

Cactus:
Because for good or bad, Harley, I’m my own man, the irreducible Cactus Jack, bang bang! And whatever plans you had, whatever you thought you were going to use me for, forget it! No-one controls Cactus Jack!

As Cactus walked away, Harley shook his head.

Race:
I had big plans, Cactus.
Big
plans...

Sting’s search for War Games teammates continued this Saturday Night, with the opening match and main event both having implications for Wrestle War in just over two weeks’ time. In the opener, Ricky Steamboat, Nikita Koloff and Todd Champion united against Thomas Rich and the Lightning Express. Now, Rich and the Express weren’t exactly on the same page, teaming wise, but still Koloff, Steamboat and Champion had to be in good form to avoid to defeat, and they were – and then some, as Steamboat scored with a Diving Crossbody to score the pin on Armstrong. Still, as Paul E. Dangerously noted on commentary, “there’s a roof on the cage, Steamboat won’t get far trying that if he gets picked!”

In the main event, meanwhile, the Dangerous Alliance trio of Rude, Pillman and Austin clashed with Sting, Randy Savage and Marcus Bagwell. Bagwell tried his best to take the fight to the Alliance members, but his eagerness proved to be his undoing as he allowed himself to be isolated by Pillman, Rude and Austin. Champions all, the Alliance teammates were ruthless in their treatment of the youngster, and while Sting and Savage did their best to redress the balance, Bagwell eventually fell victim to a Stun Gun from Austin to give victory to the Alliance – and didn’t Paul E. let us know about it!

Something for WCW’s champions to remember – they have to defend their titles in May, regardless of whether or not they’re going into War Games. Will they opt for the high-pressure matches
before
the big event, or wait until after, and risk being injured once they’ve been in the cage? Paul E. Dangerously looked like he was hoping his clients would be exempted from their defences this month; No such luck, Paul!

With the Young Pistols currently the frontrunners for the United States tag titles, and Dustin Rhodes and Arn Anderson being at odds for some time now, Saturday Night saw the two rivalries merge as Rhodes and Tracy Smothers clashed with Anderson and Owen Hart. The two sides fought fiercely, but each man seemed to be a little thrown by the absence of their regular tag partner from the contest. Still, each of these men is a real talent, and the Dangerous Alliance duo had Madusa in their corner to keep them in the fight. All credit, then, to Rhodes and Smothers as they found a way to win with Smothers unloading on Anderson with a flurry of lefts as Rhodes hit Hart with a Running Bulldog for the pin.

Trust Shawn Michaels to have no respect for a genuine legend of the ring. Just a few days removed from his mocking Michael Hayes (and that was something Hayes had plenty to say about during the course of the night!), Michaels talked down to Ric Flair as the Nature Boy tried to pump up Lance Storm ahead of his match with Michaels. Bret Hart watched the confrontation carefully, and while he wouldn’t be drawn on whether or not he agrees with the Rough Diamond, he made no move to support Flair either. Michaels, infuriatingly for some, can back up his words in the ring, as he proved with victory over Storm with the Television title at stake. Michaels made clear his feelings on the matter: “That’s three!”

Hart, meanwhile, had his own issues to deal with – a big match against Barry Windham! The Hitman and the big Texan tied it up in a rare match where the crowd at the Frank Erwin Center seemed pretty evenly split in who to cheer for. Perhaps that can be seen as a testament to Hart, who’s not been here anywhere near as long as Windham. Whatever the case, the two put on an evenly fought contest, but at the end Hart was able to pick up the win with his Scorpion Deathlock – but only after Steve Austin blindsided Windham with his title belt while Hart argued with the referee over a forced rope break!

The Ultimate Warrior continues to preach his gospel, and it’s clear that the WCW fans are listening – at least, judging by the amount of facepaint being worn in our audiences. It’s not all for Sting, judging by the designs being worn!

Segment of the Night – Ric Flair has a question for Sting

r6434EK.jpg

Ric Flair stood in the ring, his suit immaculate, his fingers gleaming with gold and diamond rings. The Nature Boy looked as good as ever – whatever funk had infected him months before apparently a thing of the past.

Flair:
Maybe three months ago I came out here and asked a favour of Sting – asked him to face me at SuperBrawl. Sting, being the good man that he is, gave me that chance... and I lost.

Flair:
Sting and I, our paths keep crossing. I made him, back in 1988, when he took me to the limit. He showed something that no-one had expected, that he could go toe-to-toe with the very best in the business, and ever since then it’s been Flair vs. Sting, Flair vs. Sting... Sometimes I think that he and I will be wrestling forever, that WCW’s last match will be the Nature Boy vs. The Man Called Sting!

Flair:
But at SuperBrawl, Sting proved that in WCW, in 1992, there’s only one Man, and that’s him. To be the Man... Well, you know the rest. Sting beat me, and that makes him the Man. And he’s learning that’s a position that comes with responsibilities – and a bullseye on your back! I’ve been there, walked that aisle, night after night, month after month, year after year, until someone came along who could do it that little bit better.

Flair:
But don’t think, don’t
ever
think, that the Nature Boy is done! No, Sting got ahead of me, and that makes him number one, but that just means that the Nature Boy will try harder!

Flair:
But will that be enough? After all, these last few weeks I’ve had the world and their mother telling me I’m too old, that I need to be put out to pasture. I’ve even had that from a group with a big guy, a bad guy, a mouthy guy and a blonde guy with a
world
of potential... and maybe that sparked some memories for the Nature Boy, maybe memories of what it’s like to be part of a group! What it’s like to go to war, wooooo!

Flair:
So Sting, come out here, and let’s talk turkey!

tB2fMub.jpg

Sting made his way down the aisle, his expression unreadable as he entered the ring with Flair.

Sting:
What are you saying, Ric?

Flair:
I’m saying, Sting, that you need a team for War Games. I have plenty of experience in that cage – more than anyone else except for Arn Anderson. You’re looking at kids like Rhodes and Bagwell, and maybe they’ve got some skills, but they don’t have experience, they don’t know gang warfare, not like I do. And you don’t have a Madusa, who’s as devious as she is beautiful, or a Paul E. Dagnerously, who’s as cunning as he is ugly! But if I was on your side, Sting, you’d have all my experience to call on, all the ideas about fighting in War Games that I never shared, even with the Horsemen, because the time wasn’t right. And most importantly, you’d have me on your team. You know that the Nature Boy could walk down that aisle and into that cage and have more experience than any four guys you could pick, and I would style and profile in War Games like I always have!

The fans in attendance cheered loudly at the thought of the two former World champions being a part of the same team.

Flair:
Let me show you, Sting, that I can do what I say I can do, that I can walk the walk as well as talk the talk. You, me, Scott Steiner and two other guys we choose against the Dangerous Alliance-

Sting waved his hand, momentarily silencing Flair, and even bringing the crowd down a little.

Sting:
The Dangerous Alliance has Arn Anderson, Brian Pillman who’s been in War Games once, and three guys who’ve never been in that cage before. I’ve been in there almost as often as Arn Anderson has. Koloff, Windham, they have plenty of experience in War Games if that’s the route I decide to go for on my team. I’m not short of experience if I decide it’s needed, Ric. I don’t want this match to turn into the Ric Flair show, not when it’s about giving back to the Dangerous Alliance after they’ve taken from so many of us over the last six months, and hurt so many of us too!

Sting:
So no, Ric, if you want to prove you can still walk the walk, then go do it. Get in the ring any night you want, even at WrestleWar, but not on my team. And before you go getting the wrong idea, Ric, it’s not that I think you’re too old, and it’s not that I think you’ve lost it. I was the last man to fight you, one-on-one. I know you still have it, I’ll even go so far as to say that you’re as good as you’ve ever been – and like you say, if anyone would know, it’d be me, as often as we’ve fought.

Sting:
You could be a real asset to the team, Ric, and I hope that you’re doing right by Chris Jericho and Lance Storm. They say good things about you, but I remember how much I was impressed by you when I was a kid, and then you stabbed me in the back.

Sting:
The reason I don’t want you on my team at WrestleWar, Ric? It’s simple.

Sting:
I just don’t trust you.

Tossing the microphone aside, Sting left the ring as Flair was left standing in his wake, looking put out at Sting’s decision.

Schiavone:
As much as the crowd wanted it... maybe Sting made the right decision!

Bischoff:
What’re you saying, Tony?

Schiavone:
If Sting can’t trust Ric Flair – and I make no comment on that, personally – then he
can’t
risk siding with him in War Games.

Magnum:
But Flair’s right, though. Sting’s got a real tough task picking three more teammates to face the Dangerous Alliance!

WCW Hotline Show Notes

X0PxCNE.jpg

Following their partners’ match on Saturday Night, this time it was Barry Windham and Steve Armstrong taking on Steve Austin and Brian Pillman. The two teams tore into one another and the advantage passed back and forth, but the appearance of Tracy Smothers tilted momentum in favour of Armstrong and Windham as, with Pillman distracted, Windham leathered Austin with a Lariat to score the pinfall.

After the match, Owen Hart chased Tracy Smothers down to the ring, where he, Windham and Armstrong took a stand against the Dangerous Alliance trio. While Pillman and Austin were fuming, Hart remained somewhat calm, stalking back and forth with a microphone before telling the Young Pistols that they’d get their wish – a United States tag title shot, but there’d be no mercy shown by the Dangerous Alliance for a team who’d screwed them out of wins and win bonuses!

Sting’s pursuit of War Games teammates continued here as he sided with the WCW Special Forces to take on the Diamond Mine and Loud and Proud. Sting’s side won with the former World champion pinning Scotty Flamingo with a Stinger Splash. Did Sting see anything in his teammates to take them into War Games? Meanwhile, another former World champion faced a challenge of his own as Nikita Koloff clashed with Tim Horner, taking the win with a Jackhammer.

Shawn Michaels continued to be the man to beat, taking on and defeating local competitor Chris Youngblood in defence of his Television title. That’s four defences now for the Rough Diamond – can he make it five in a row on Saturday Night?

Madusa starred in Japan before joining the Dangerous Alliance, and knows all about her opponent on Sunday, Bull Nakano. She warned Nakano that she’d only become all the more dangerous since returning to America, and so it proved as she overcame her powerful challenger with a Bridging German Suplex.

The Stocks And Shares Express have been a little out of focus of late, with the focus on Terence Taylor and Thomas Rich. However, they’re multiple champions and undoubtedly the most experienced team in the company, as they showed here with their efficient and relentless assault on the Thrillseekers, eventually taking the win with a Double Dropkick on Jericho. It seems that the Thrillseekers’ advisor Ric Flair may have been a little bit distracted!<!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <o:OfficeDocumentSettings> <o:AllowPNG/> <o:TargetScreenSize>1024x768</o:TargetScreenSize> </o:OfficeDocumentSettings> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:PunctuationKerning/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas/> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> <w:DontGrowAutofit/> </w:Compatibility> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" LatentStyleCount="156"> </w:LatentStyles> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} </style> <![endif]-->

<em>I was a fan of the Southern Boys, and they are ideal US Tag Champs.....if anything, probably a better fit for the US Tag Titles now than the CC, who must be starting to outgrow the second (or even third now) tier Titles.....but with that being said, I don’t see them losing here either.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>This should be an awesome match and one I would have paid money to see....but the WCW Tag Champs retain here</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Talk about a future main event programme, here it is....Shawn retains, but Flair and the Thrillseekers could have a great little feud with DDP’s Diamonds if you wanted to go in that direction.</em></p><p> </p><p>

Let's just say that Ric Flair trying to be a genuine good guy strained even Sting's willing suspension of disbelief!</p>

The Pistols were good, very good, but when the Dangerous Alliance formed, I opened the eyes of great potential talents in Steve Austin, Brian Pillman and Owen Hart, and convinced Arn Anderson and Rick Rude that their path to greatest success lay in uniting. The Young Pistols seemed in especially good cheer in this match, finally having chased the Connection down for a title opportunity. Arn Anderson comes from the Anderson school, Rick Rude is one of the toughest men on the planet, and Steve Austin is Texas strong – adding two of the Dungeon’s finest just makes the Alliance an even stronger alloy.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

In the face of such a relentless attack, Armstrong and Smothers were forced into retreat. Setting themselves to defend, it was their clear intent to ride out the storm and search for weaknesses in the Connection’s technique. As Dangerously was quick to point out, however, there appeared to be none – between Hart’s technical ability and Pillman’s speed the pistols came close to losing the match several times in the opening minutes.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

However, even as talented a team as the Calgary Connection cannot maintain such a furious pace indefinitely, and a slower pace was brought about – somewhat surprisingly – at the hands and feet of the Young Pistols as Armstrong raked Pillman’s eyes, and he and Smothers went to work double-teaming their opponent, pushing the referee’s patience to the limit.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Their gameplan blunted, the Connection retreated to their corner as both teams took the time to regroup. Pillman and Hart consulted with Madusa, who climbed up on the ring apron to speak to her clients, only for this to be objected to by the Pistols. Madusa took offence to this and entered the ring herself to get in Smothers’ and Armstrong’s faces, defending her right to consult with her clients.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Madusa’s unlawful entrance into the match saw her booed loudly by the fans, who seemed to be enjoying watching the Connection get a taste of their own medicine at the hands of the Pistols. Undaunted, she snapped at the referee and yelled at the Pistols, giving the Connection a chance to regroup.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

A match between the WCW and NWA tag champions was never going to be a calm affair, and the two sides proceeded to beat the living daylights out of one another for over twent minutes this Saturday night. With War Games less than two weeks’ away, Randy Savage was out to make a strong case for his inclusion, and seemed set to take the win for his side with a Macho Elbow on Steve Austin, but Arn Anderson used pepper spray from Madusa on Savage, blinding him and getting his side disqualified – and sparking a mass brawl between the two sides that took a huge security force to break up! Sting, Nikita Koloff and Dustin Rhodes were allowed to stay in the ring to take on the York Foundation, but whatever benefit Sting may have gained from that will surely be spoiled by Thomas Rich’s interference – albeit that he saw how quickly Koloff was ready to take advantage of a ready-made opportunity!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Cactus Jack clearly isn’t finished with Harley Race and his allies, and it could have been bad new for him when cornered by the group, but the appearance of Ultimate Warrior seemed to throw them! Warrior later interrupted Ric Flair as he psyched up Chris Jericho and Lance Storm, Warrior praising the youngsters for their ambition!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Shawn Michaels retained his Television title for the fifth time with a victory over Chris Jericho on Saturday Night. With five defences, Michaels had to vacate the title – and former champions Ron Simmons and Mr Hughes were chosen by Commissioner Ventura to contest the title. After a bruising contest, it was the All-American who emerged victorious! Simmons’ victory did not go unnoticed backstage – Bret Hart was watching closely, and Michaels didn’t miss </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>that</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">, nor did Michael Hayes miss Michaels’ comments!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Some way from the main event, incidentally, but tentpoling the show nonetheless, was the WCW tag title match – a 94, my 10th A-rated match in this save and #5 on my top 100 matches. Less notable, but useful as a note on how... unpopular (let’s go with that) WCW’s talent is to start the game: Jericho/Michaels cracks the top 50 with an 81. Lest we forget, the main event of Halloween Havoc only scored an 82.
