Tracy Smothers and Owen Hart both have tag gold of their own, and the two argued about whose was worth more – being the World tag champions, or being the US tag champions having beaten the current World champions to win them! Hart and Smothers decided to settle matters in the ring, and while it may be too much to say for certain that one match proved anything one way or another, it was Hart who emerged triumphant here with a Missile Dropkick! </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Six-person tag action opened the show, as NWA Tag and Women’s champions Arn Anderson, Steve Austin and Madusa teamed up to battle the Special Forces and Mariko Yoshida. The Dangerous Alliance trio looked dangerous, of course, but their opponents put forward a fierce effort before Anderson felled Firebreaker Chip with a Spinning Spinebuster. The Dangerous Alliance trio flaunted their gold after the bell, and warned others not to try and take it from them – they’re not in a giving mood!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Terence Taylor clashed with Junkyard Dog with the Television title on the line, and came out on top with a Piledriver on the big veteran. That’s three defences and $3,000 in the bank for Taylor – could he make it to five, and a title shot of his choice?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Marcus Bagwell is young, he’s learning, and he’s trying hard. Vinnie Vegas is seven feet tall, and sometimes you can’t learn that – as Vegas proved with a Snake Eyes on Bagwell for the win. Afterwards, the rest of the Diamond Exchange joined Vegas in the ring to boast about their win at the Clash and flaunt their own gold – in this case the WCW Six Man titles!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The Thrillseekers have Ric Flair as their manager, while the One Percenters are backed by Harley Race. Who benefits more, do you think? The Thrillseekers came out with the win here – but only because the Harris twins double-teamed them relentlessly and beat them into the mat before being disqualified, all while Flair watched on from ringside. Well, that was what they wanted!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</p><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">“I would speak to you,” Warrior announced as Ric pulled on his jacket. Flair turned, hiding a sigh.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Jim, Warrior, it’s late and I have a meeting with Mr Turner first thing tomorrow. Can this wait?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“I wish to know why the Junkyard Dog was placed into contention for the World title, while I am yet to receive the same consideration. The Junkyard Dog may have once been a great fighter, but those days have passed. And yet he was granted an opportunity, as was Big Van Vader who I defeated on Thursday night. Clearly if placed against Rick Rude I would win – as I have in the past.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Not for the first time, Ric wondered where the line between kayfabe and reality lay in Warrior’s mind.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“JYD is the favourite wrestler of Ted Turner. Given that I have a performance review with him tomorrow, I thought giving Dog a chance might just give me an extra bit of support. As for Vader... Well, he’s going to be big. And his match with Ron just put him in the public eye some more, so next time you guys face off at the Bash it’s going to be that much more heated with the crowd. It’s just simple, straightforward booking, believe me.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Do you worry about Mr Turner?” Warrior asked. Flair shrugged, wishing that Warrior were a little less perceptive.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Shouldn’t he be talking about fuelling a rocket ship, or Forcechlorians, or whatever I heard him talking about earlier tonight?</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“No, not really. We’re in a good position, and I think we’ll get even better in the coming months. Was there anything else? I really do need to get going if I want to get some real sleep before tomorrow.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Warrior frowned. “So the Junkyard Dog is retained because of Ted Turner?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Flair shrugged. “He’s the boss.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“I see.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Flair nodded to Warrior before walking off.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The following morning Flair made sure to arrive at Turner’s office early to show willing. He was freshly showered, shaved and sporting his nicest suit. He had copious notes, and any amount of analysis from WCW statisticians he’d only learned that the company employed the week before when he’d gone looking for some inctontrovertible proof that he was doing a good job.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Just remember... We outdrew last year’s Bash with the Clash just gone. A 38,000 attendance against 35,000. That’s the first time we’ve done that. That’s a solid number. And look at how pumped the dirtsheets are for what we’re putting out!</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>God help me if I need the dirtsheets on my side to keep my job...</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>TV ratings are-</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“I think it’s gone well,” Ric replied, taking the seat Turner had waved him into. “We’ve got coverage in Europe and Japan now, which we didn’t before. Well, I can’t say I haven’t done this myself on occasion.</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Mainly when the Nature Boy was going to chew someone out...</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“But I think that the biggest indicator is that TV ratings are up – significantly. Saturday Night this past weekend had a 3.5 share. A year ago that was a 2.9. We’ve increased our audience share by over 20 percent, Ted, and that’s a lot of people watching now who weren’t a year ago.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

He sat up a little straighter, warming to his theme.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“But that’s not all. Look at the sales of WCW Magazine – they’ve gone through the roof over the last year. It used to be that we needed Sting or me on the cover to get a sales bump, but six months ago I suggested that he get left off for a while to see what happened. Sales are up! We’re posting record numbers when we put the Calgary Connection or Nikita Koloff on the cover.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“We put out a poster magazine two months back and it flew off the racks! And it’s not like it was just Missy and Madusa in there. Rick Rude sells. Brian Pillman sells. Steve Austin sells. Sting and Ricky Steamboat sell.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

He beamed.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“And the ticket sales... Ted, a year ago we did a million five on tickets in a month. In June we cleared 2.4 million. That’s a sixty percent increase in ticket sales!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Our boys are hot, Ted – the Dangerous Alliance are hot, their opponents are hot, you’ve got guys like Vader and Rhodes who’re coming up fast-”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Ric, enough.” Turner smiled as he spread his hands. “I’m not going to fire you, if that’s your concern. WCW has done well. Could we have grown more quickly? Yes, I suspect so – but the company statisticians assure me that it won’t be long before we are re-established on the national footing that Jim’s leadership dragged us away from.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“And yes, I know that the ad revenue fell sharply in the early days of your time in charge... but I believe that was down to the lingering Herd effect, yes?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric nodded. He was certain of that.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Oh, maybe the Nature Boy could have gone all-in on those first few Saturday Nights... but you gotta build slow and steady. Sometimes!</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Yes Ted. Vince himself would have struggled to get a tune out of WCW those first few weeks – all the more so without Hogan around!”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Yes, I wanted to speak to you about that...”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Flair waited now, willing to let Turner have his say,</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“The accountants and statisticians say that we’re about ready to invest heavily in nationwide advertising and consider moving WCW into a primetime slot again. What do you think?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>National? Primetime?</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Right where the Nature Boy belongs! Woooo!</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric steepled his fingers, and stared over them at the surface of Turner’s desk.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“I think we wait. Maybe just a month, maybe a little longer. Let’s keep the money coming in, and just build up a bit more of a beachhead. As soon as we try and go national again, Vince will send Hogan out on </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Regis and Kathy Lee</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> or whatever. Even as a heel, he still trumps anyone we have – and they have Piper, Dibiase and Roberts. I think we have the edge on them overall, but Hogan is above even Warrior in terms of nationwide popularity.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Hmm, and how’s Warrior working out? I know that you had reservations.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“I did. I still do. We all do. He’s on big money, he has an ego as fragile as an egg shell and it’s difficult to use him to put others over when he has little or no concept of giving back. Vader was a fairly easy sell as a </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>challenge</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> for him – but I want Vader to be a challenge for anyone. He’s got the size and the athleticism to do damn near </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>anything</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">, and when Rude drops the belt, Vader’s going to be high on the list of challengers for the new World champion. I can’t have him losing out of the gate... but Warrior and Vader look </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>amazing</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> together.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric sat back in his chair.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“I think I’m starting to understand what Vince has always said about perception being reality. You’ve always needed sleight of hand to be a good wrestler, but Vince is good enough to play find-the-pebble with Andre the Giant under one of the cups. Vader can be our Andre, he really can, but he needs to be built up first. Looking good against the Warrior will help, and there’ll be matches in the future that he’ll win outright against big name talent. It’s all a juggling act.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

He smiled.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“But at least I don’t have one hand tied behind my back any more.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“So, you’re pleased with how things are going?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“I am. It’s not perfect, but it never is. We got Warrior and Savage to build our recognition. Michaels and Hart were great for the midcard – and soon the main event. Rude was a flat-out godsend, I think... And being able to bring Ricky back was great, too. Add that to all the talent we had here already – Arn, Sting, Pillman, Owen, Austin, the Steiners, Windham and Rhodes... I think we’ve done about as well as we could have done. It took us a while to get going, no question, but like you say, Ted, there was damage to be undone from Jim Herd before we could think about moving forward.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Good. I think we’re in agreement. Now, as to roster management... I note that wages have gone up a </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>lot</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> over the last year. Would you care to comment?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“It’s the price of success, Mr Turner,” Ric said, feeling that the formality was necessary. “We’ve got bigger names, and our workers who signed cheap deals know they’re more over, and want to be paid to reflect that.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“And Arn Anderson’s contract is currently up for renewal.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Yes sir.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“And my sources tell me that his new deal would make him the highest-paid worker on the roster.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric ventured a smile.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“At least it’s not me, sir.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“No, it’s your best friend, and you want to hand him a contract worth 2.5 million over four years.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric met Turner’s eyes without flinching.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Yes, sir, and for the sake of transparency I suspect he won’t stay the best-paid worker for very long. Rick Rude just asked for a pay rise. Sting won’t be far off. Austin, Koloff, Warrior... It’s the price we pay if we want to really challenge the WWF for the number one spot in the world – and the big money that comes with it.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“And you believe that Arn’s worth this amount of money?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Yes, sir. I do. He’s worth it for what he brings in the ring, for what he can do on the microphone... And when he hangs up his boots in a few years, I want him to become a trainer down in WCCW.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Hmmm, WCCW. Yes, that reminds me... Why is WCW covering the debts of </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>seven</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> other companies?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“They’re small debts, sir, no more than a few cents on the dollar each month.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“A few cents that could definitely be used elsewhere,” Turner countered.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Sir, you can say that about anything. But those regional companies are vital to wrestling. Without them, there’s nowhere for wrestlers to go and spread their wings between completing their training and joining the big leagues. Sir, think of training as high school baseball. WCCW is Double A, and sometimes we can take talent straight from there, but sometimes they have to move on to Triple A and work with guys who maybe missed their big shot, or are still waiting for it and are still working hard. Baseball needs Triple A, sir. It’s not the most glamorous, but it’s a part of the process. And we need our Triple A-“</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Turner held up his hands.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Ric, whenever you talk baseball I know you’re trying to sell me on something you think I don’t like. Make sure that those cents on the dollar don’t start becoming cents on a half dollar, or a quarter, and you can keep the Double A. Otherwise, cut ‘em loose and let them take their chances. We’re not a charity, Ric... But I suppose we need a farm team or two. Or seven.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

He stood up and walked over to the coffee tray, pouring two cups and handing one to Ric. “Now, one last thing: Titles.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“I know I had the Six Man titles but-“</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Turner waved him into silence.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Ric, I have no problem with how you’ve booked yourself. You’re getting the Thrillseekers in front of the camera – and the Diamond Exchange. That’s good. But you have four sets of tag titles, counting the NWA belts, and the four singles titles, including the NWA Women’s title. Am I forgetting anything?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“No sir, although the NWA belts-“</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“-are on WCW personnel, and WCW personnel who are substantially bigger names than anyone the NWA board is likely to book them against, as this letter points out.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Turner handed over a sheet of paper bearing the familiar figurehead of the National Wrestling Alliance. Ric scanned it quickly.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“This doesn’t seem too bad. They appreciate the extra gate from having Madusa or Arn and Steve about... And when the time comes, they’ll drop the belts, sure. Are they worried that they’ll use creative control?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“That’s the champions’ prerogative when they visit other promotions, of course,” Turner said. “But the NWA wants </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>all</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> the other promotions to have a chance of booking the champions.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric shrugged. “No problem. Arn and Steve don’t need the belts. And Madusa... Well, I did have another idea of how to showcase her.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Go on.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“In the future, possibly in the event that WCW and the NWA part ways, we could become the first promotion </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>in the world</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> to promote a mixed tag team title. The matches would still be fought on segregated lines, but it would let female worker share the limelight with the men – Rick Rude and Madusa against Sting and Wendi Richter, say.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“In the future, you say?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric nodded.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Leave it there. For now. I’m not ready to promote anything that may seem like it encourages violence against women.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Turner’s expression turned from serious to amused in an instant. “By the way... Take a look at this.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Reaching into a desk drawer, he pulled out a manila envelope and passed it across the desk.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“This doesn’t go beyond these four walls, understand? I have a contact in NBC and, well...”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric almost laughed. NBC had terminated its television contract with the WWF after the Federation failed to provide a sufficient number of episodes of Wrestling Challenge to meet the terms of the contract, and was now preparing legal action.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“How did that happen?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“I’m told – and I don’t know if this is true – that Vince thought Dick Ebersol would see him clear. But it didn’t happen.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric shook his head. It would never make it to court, it would probably barely even make the dirtsheet headlines... but it was a mistake on the part of the WWF, and that was something he wanted more of.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Ric, carry on the way you are. Keep improving. You’re doing a good job with WCW, and I expect you to do better. We’ll talk again soon, of course, but let’s call the last 12 months a B+. Now go get me an A – or a 5 star rating, if you prefer!”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric left the office feeling as though he were walking on air. WCW was his, still, and his plans could be played out.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Just so long as everyone backstage sticks to the plan.</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>What are they going to do, join the WWF? They can try, but once Arn signs on it’ll be six months before the next major contract comes up! It’s all going our way! Whoooo!</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="text-align:left;"><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>* </em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>

</p><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">“...even Jim’s having difficulty selling this ‘injured list’ spiel for Badd again.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric walked into the room and nodded absently to those already sat around the table. Thoughts of the Great American Bash were uppermost in his mind, not least whether they might be able to score a 5* rating for the main event.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Meltzer’s just gets hard for Japan! Did All Japan really put on seven matches better than our best this last year, or does he just come over faint when Tsuruta and Kawada walk down the aisle?</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“What’s the issue?” he asked, taking his seat at the head of the table. It was Jim Crockett, unusually, who leant forward.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“We have an issue with one of our teams, Ric,” he began. “Marc Mero and Scott Levy.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Johnny B. Badd and Scotty Flamingo,” Mike Graham added, as though Ric needed reminding who was on his roster.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Still, using their real names? Jim’s not happy.</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Jim hasn’t been happy since he blew all his cash trying to chase Vince down after giving him a three year head start!</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“So, Loud and Proud... What about them?” Ric asked.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“They’re both unhappy about punishments handed down to them – separately, and for each other. So far no-one much is talking about them backstage, Ric, but you know how these things can get; All it takes is one person with sway backstage to take their side and it can turn into a full-blown rebellion,” Michael Hayes replied. “I know things are good right now, Ric. We need to decide how we want to handle this.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“I’ve kind of lost track over what they’re unhappy about. Someone remind me?” Ric asked.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Well, Johnny’s been caught juicing twice, or is it three times?” Hayes looked around. Bischoff shrugged, the others offered no reply. “He’s suspended, again.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“And Scotty?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Suspended too. First time for him – but hard drugs this time,” Hayes said. Ric noticed that no-one was commenting on the sentences – either as too hard, or too lenient.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Crown Royal did it for me. Or Seagram’s. Smirnoff. “I know they’re not happy, but they did the crime, they have to do the time. And we’re out an undercard tag team.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“That’s part of the issue, Ric. I know you like Johnny and Scotty, but...” Hayes looked around his colleagues. “Guys?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“You cut Garvin and Murdoch for less, Ric,” Crockett said. “And if Levy or Mero had higher profiles, that wouldn’t go unnoticed. </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Some</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> people might wonder why two young kids are getting more opportunities than veterans like Garvin and Murdoch.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>He’s still pissed about our signing Warrior.</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Warrior puts asses in seats – unlike Dick Murdoch or Jimmy Garvin in the last five years!</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Young and dumb gets more leeway than old and dumb, Jim,” Ric said. “And it’s not like Dick or Jim had clean sheets when I started here. I didn’t wipe the slate clean, no matter how well me and Dick got on, or how much drinking I did with Jimmy. They were in the last chance saloon – and they kept drinking!”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Well, Mero and Levy have kept injecting, or whatever it is they’re doing. How many chances do they get, Ric?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“I’d intended that this be their last chance, Jim, and that’s about the last thought I gave them. Are you telling me that we should get rid of them now?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Yes.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The answer was blunt and quickly delivered – and came from Eric Bischoff. Flair frowned at him.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Eric?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Ric, this is a company that plays to a mainly southern crowd. I’m just not sure that the flamboyance of Badd or Flamingo is clicking with them. They’ve been a team for, what, a year now?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“So tag teams normally get over quickly, but these guys aren’t catching on.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Signs in the crowd, shirts sold, fan surveys... There’s just been no real change in interest since last year. Our fans know them – but they don’t </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>care</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> about them.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“And do you all feel the same way?” Ric looked around the table. Crockett was defiant. Graham, as always, shifted in uneasily in his seat when a decision had to be made. Hayes looked slightly hesitant, as though he were reluctant to condemn two fellow pros, but he nodded. Bischoff held up his hand.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“I don’t want to present issues without solutions, Ric, so I had an idea about who we might want to bring in to replace,” he glanced at Crockett, “Badd and Flamingo </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>if</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> we let them go.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Go on.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“A few months back we had a couple of cowboys in – Brett Colton and Mike Winchester or something like that. They got over pretty quickly, Ric – quicker than Loud and Proud did. I had some fan surveys carried out this last week,” he held up another sheaf of paper, “and our fans still remember them. They want to see them back – and they were only here for six weeks or so.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric frowned.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Well, it seems there’s a consensus,” he said. He almost winced at the note of bitterness he could hear in his voice.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Ric, we’re putting the idea on the table for you,” Hayes said, his hands held up. “If you don’t like it, you’re the boss.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“No, no, let’s decide this the way we always do – between ourselves. I won’t disguise the fact that I like Loud and Proud; I think Scotty Flamingo can be very big, and Badd’s got the potential to do big things as well. They’re on their last chances, and they know it but... if you think we should let them go now, then I’m willing to listen.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“One last thing, Ric...” Eric said. “If you don’t like the idea of bringing back the cowboys, there’s always the option of choosing from the young kids in World Class. Whether we bring them up for a show or two, or promote a couple of them full-time. Or...”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Yes?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“...there’s one other option. Jim will tell you more.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“The SWS and New Japan each contacted me a few days ago – one of those occasional coincidences, you see,” Crockett said, sitting back and staring over the top of his steepled fingers. “I dealt with them back in the day, and you know how the Japanese are about maintaining ties...”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>Sure. And they like dealing with the correct person, too. It shows respect. And the SWS didn’t start running shows until </em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em><span style="text-decoration:underline;">after</span></em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em> Jim sold out.</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>But apart from that, he’s talking the complete truth!</em></div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“...and anyway, to cut a long story short, we have these two young workers who’re looking to come to America on excursion. They’d be happy to sit at the bottom of the card, losing every match. Just what we need in that spot, really.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“So, are those the options? Sack Flamingo and Badd, and then bring in the cowboys, raid development, or use these Japanese kids?”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

“Or keep Loud and Proud,” Graham said, hurriedly. “If you’re happy to keep them, of course.”</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Flair nodded to Graham. He looked around the table. Bischoff had his own ideas – and he wanted to try them. Crockett had his own ideas – and wanted to make Ric suffer for ignoring him over Warrior. Graham would normally go with the crowd – but the way he was sheepishly looking at Ric left him confident that he’d give Ric his backing. As for Hayes... Flair looked at him, and Hayes stared back, his face unreadable as he waited for Ric to speak.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

<strong>Well first thing I say is fire their um collective behinds. I always liked Scotty and feel like he has something to give someday. Badd unfortunately is a waste of space. All flash and no substance. I’d bring back the young cowboy dudes and maybe stick them with a manager (not Paul E) but a Cornette type of guy. Or maybe they could replace those thrillseeker ingrates and join Flair consulting, I bet those two you guys would love if Naitch took them under his wing.</strong></p>

<p>I too like Raven and Badd, but it sounds like they aren't going to fix things up unless you cut them. That out of the way, while I'm sure the smartest bet may be the Gunns, as they would likely get over in a heartbeat with the southern fried rasslin' crowd, I'm going to throw my vote behind Kojima and Kanemoto. They would bring something very different to the scene, and if you do them right they could be facing off with Dangerous Alliance members sooner rather than later. They too would likely need a mouthpiece for a little bit, but I'm sure you can find someone who could use a new team of fresh faced, young Japanese stars to lead toward the top.</p><p> </p><p>

On a separate note, man it's too bad it's only 1992 if you're Madusa, right? I mean, I'm playing in 2001 and the best I can really do for her in WCW is make her a manager. But that said, I'm not sure mixed tag titles is the best idea. As Ted said, there are already a lot of titles floating around, and just barely enough TV time to fit them all in. All of them <em>seem</em> very prestigious right now... but that's because a lot of them are in the Alliance, and so they're getting airtime all at once. But if they were to lose a few of those belts, they could very easily spiral into "Mideon pulls a belt out of Shane McMahon's duffel bag" levels of worthiness. I have to wonder if perhaps your best option (in perhaps a few months' time) would be to break from the NWA so that you can just promote yourself instead of having to split your focus that way as well.</p><p> </p><p>

That said, though, you're doing a fine job of keeping everything together (personally I'd need at least one more B show to handle this much talent <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> ) but I thought it might be some nice food for thought.</p>

<em>I'll be the minority here. Smoking Gunns were never that interesting to me, and while Kojima and Koji bring the promise of already having good in ring skills, the idea of giving the guys in development a try is appealing to me. Plus, if they stink, you can also call them back down and give some other youngins a shot.</em></p><p><em> </em></p><p><em>

Shame about Scotty. I've never really cared for Mero, but I always have a soft spot for Raven. Let the man hit the indies and figure it out - and bring in the flock later. </em></p>

I'm not a fan of either Scotty or Johnny so they can go. Raven could come back in the future perhaps but not right now. As for Kip James and Mike Barton they might be southern but they sure aren't good. Those two will keep in the long run, I think. As for developmental, that's a crap draw for what's ultimately undercard work. </p><p> </p><p>

I think bringing in Kojima and Kanemoto is the best choice, given that they're different weight classes so can enjoy some different singles action, they're NJPW guys so the storytelling potential is there in the long run if and when you loan them back for some shows and they're more distinctive than two more American white meat babyfaces. </p><p> </p><p>

Let's get some sushi in this Kentucky fry up is what I'm saying.</p>

<em>Of those choices I’ll go with the Gunn’s, simply because the cowboy gimmick will go down well in WCW, (although are you going to have a conflict there with the Young Pistols? We may have to have a shootout at high noon to sort that out)....I don’t know the Japanese guys, and without knowing which two developmental guys you’re thinking of promoting I can’t comment on them either.......it’s a damn shame to see Flamingo go though, he was one of my favourites in the short time he was with WCW.....are you sure there’s not a spot available in the Diamond Mine for Mr. Levy? He was part of the stable briefly, and he and Page are/were close.....fire Mero by all means though </em><img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></p>

Love to see Kanemoto -- I always run the Punk Rudo gimmick in historical sims, and I think it works well for a opener/lower midcard tag team. You can always throw them a couple wins over local talent or jobbers so they still appear to be a threat. Is Gary Hart still kicking around somewhere? He'd be perfect here. </p><p> </p><p>

I don't know if "borrowing" the Gunns would feel right. I know they have success on the indies, but I'd feel the name would be forever attached.</p>

Honestly, I would love to see Kojima & Kanemoto hit the scene in WCW and see how they play out. Perhaps they could do wonders for the company. It was a hard pick between them and James / Barton. Either one should do great for your company though.</p>

And next week, whether it’s Shawn Michaels or Sting, “Stunning” Steve will score another win. And then it’s you and me, Rick, Alliance against Alliance, and </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>everyone</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> wins at the Bash!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Austin beamed widely, but the stony look on Rude’s face made his smile fade slowly.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Rude moved closer to Austin, almost standing nose-to-nose with the younger man.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

I’ll back myself against anyone, Rick, because I know I’m good, and I know I can fight anyone if I’m at a hundred percent and don’t make any mistakes. Sting? I’ve fought him before. He’s tough, </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>real</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> tough, but I’ve been watching his matches, seeing how you beat him, how others got at him. I’m confident. Michaels? He’s good – a real prospect! But he relies too much on the Diamond Exchange, and I figure Madusa can counter them. Then it’s just me and Michaels, and I know I’m good enough to beat him.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

But if you want me to pick a side, Rick, then I can pick one: The side that makes the most money. Now, do I want to be a part of the Dangerous Alliance, reaping the rewards that come with it, being a tag champ with Arn, maybe helping keep that big shiny gold belt around your waist? Or do I want to stab you in the back and take the big one for myself?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

I seem happy? You’re right – I am. My first shot at headlining a pay-per-view in a World title match? I’m over the moon, and maybe I’m kinda stupid, but I thought that my teammates might be pleased for me too.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Now I’m wondering what I should do. I’ll tell you this, Rick: When I get in the ring with Sting or Michaels next week, I won’t be the one losing, so you should study your tapes, watch everything there is on me. Learn what I can do, because I’ll be across the ring from you at the Bash, and I’m </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>damn</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> sure that the best man’s going walk out as the WCW World champion!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The Diamond Exchange motivated Shawn Michaels backstage before the main event, talking about how much money they could make with the World champion in their group – and how women would throw themselves at the Rough Diamond once he had the gold around his waist! For Sting, it was clear that all the motivation he needed came from his recent interactions with Michaels and the Exchange – with the Stinger for once not coming out on top!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The match itself was fought at a thrilling pace, with Michaels and Sting both showing off their incredible athleticism as they moved around the ring at top speed. Sting, to no surprise, was the stronger of the two competitors, but Michaels had a clear edge in speed even over Sting, and the two seemed evenly matched. Michaels was even able to get a close fall with a Teardrop Suplex, but Sting got a hand onto the bottom rope to break the count. As Michaels argued with the referee, Sting was able to gather his wits and lift Michaels high with a press slam. Michaels staggered into the corner, where he was hit with a Stinger Splash, before the Scorpion Deathlock was applied in the centre of the ring, forcing Michaels to submit, and giving Sting a place in the deciding match against Steve Austin next week!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Steve Austin didn’t want to let Sting and Shawn Michaels have any excuse for his beating one of them next week, and asked for a challenger from the locker room. Steve Armstrong stepped up to the task, saying that he was always ready for a fight. The pair put on a spirited brawl with Austin proving that he can fight cleanly when he chooses to, as he eventually put Armstrong down with a Stun Gun for the pin. </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Missy Hyatt cornered Arn Anderson backstage to talk about the controversial finish to his match with Bret Hart at the Clash. Anderson shrugged off any talk of controversy, saying that he won – and if Hart wasn’t asking for a rematch, he saw no reason to </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>offer</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> him one.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Jesse Ventura managed to get Scott Steiner and Randy Savage in the same room, which must have taken some doing – and, judging by the number of security guards present, the Commissioner was expecting trouble! However, Steiner and Savage made no bones about their desire to get their hands on the Calgary Connection in a rematch... but your correspondent did notice that they never once looked at each other during their time in Commissioner Ventura’s office.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

El Tigre Blanco has been seeking momentum since his return from injury, and will feel he’s regained some following victory over Pat Rose on Saturday night.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Nikita Koloff, who took a beating from Big Van Vader at the Clash, returned to action on Saturday night in a tag match with Ron Simmons, who faced Vader in a groundshaking brawl last week. The pair faced off against Vader’s Kingdom allies the One Percenters, and came up trumps with a Simmons Spinebuster to Ron Harris – but it was notable that Koloff let Simmons handle most of the match. Apparently the Post Soviet Superstar isn’t firing on all cylinders just yet!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric Flair shared some tips with the Thrillseekers ahead of their match with the Calgary Connection. Maybe they helped Chris Jericho and Lance Storm in the thrilling contest that followed, as the young Canadians held their own against the World tag champions for almost 15 minutes, but in the end the experience of the Dangerous Alliance pairing told as they managed to isolate Jericho before Owen Hart scored with the Northern Lights Suplex to pick up the win.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">
