Sting vs. Diamond Dallas Page

Stinger but with a lot of interference outside

Beat The Champ: The Patriot vs. Terence Taylor © – WCW Television Title

I just don’t see Taylor being above this title and ready to challenge anyone for it. Time for a new champ that might get something out of the TV title

Bret Hart vs. Scotty Flamingo

Time to do some time for Scotty, does he get the boot or has Flair gone soft

Chris Kanyon and Billy Kidman vs. The One Percenters

These guys hanging with Vader get the benefit here

Marcus Bagwell vs. Thomas Rich

This one is kind of tough. Wildfire isn’t who he once was, but Bagwell has been losing gaining valuable experience. Does it start to pay off. I’ll side with youth and potential since Rich seems on the treadmill

<em>You could knock the ref out, have the entire Diamond Mine and Steve Austin simultaneously run in, give Sting a five on one beating, superglue his shoulders to the mat AND place Mjolnir on his chest......and Sting would STILL kick out at two.....no way will he be happy about putting Page over </em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Was this a traditional TV Title reign then I’d be all for a long Terrance Taylor reign, but with the Beat the Champ rules and subsequent “bigger” title opportunity, I don’t see it for Tel, TV/US Tag Titles is about his limit.....unless he’s going to trade the TV Title In for a Tag Shot, I could see that.....incidentally, the Terry Taylor/Greg Valentine team with the Us Tag Titles around this time IRL, I enjoyed that </em></p><p> </p><p>

Yeah, I don't think DDP is going to get there in this diary, but who knows? Currently autopushing as a midcarder after a grand total of 7 televised matches in 12 months... which actually makes him more active than some WWF talent.

Greg Valentine, eh? Remember that name - we'll come back to him in a few weeks!

Segment of the Night – The Calgary Connection Discuss Their Rematch With Randy Savage And Scott Steiner

2ytkyaJ.jpgon556lI.jpg

The Calgary Connection stood in the centre of the ring, title belts strapped around their waists as they exchanged high fives.

Hart:
Another step on the road; Brian, do you see
any
reason why we’re not going to be recognised as the greatest tag team in the world?

Pillman:
Not just the greatest in the world, the greatest ever!

Pillman laughed as Owen nodded appreciatively.

Hart:
But I know you have another title in mind as well. The greatest tag team ever and...

Pillman:
...the most
dangerous
ever. More dangerous than the Road Warriors!

Hart:
You mean the ‘Legion of Doom’?

Pillman cackled as Owen mimed claws and fangs.

Pillman:
More dangerous than the Steiner Brothers!

Hart:
Brothers? I thought there was only one of them!

Pillman:
There is now I got done with them!

Owen laughed as Pillman hobbled around the ring, clutching his neck and head.

Hart:
And then there’s Scott and the ‘replacement’.

Pillman:
Well, they’re still hanging around. Just about. We beat them for these-

Pillman slapped the title belt around his waist.

Pillman:
-and that’s just us getting started. Because Scotty, Randy, we have a big idea for the Great American Bash. A
big
idea. So big we’re going to need to catch some air. Tell ‘em, Owen!

Pillman stepped back as Owen moved into the middle of the ring.

Hart:
Before my family’s company got shut down by the big dogs, we were doing some exciting things, some
big
things –
too
exciting,
too
big, because WCW and WWF got scared and came after us. So Randy, Scott, you two earned your money here and in New York, and that makes you perfect for something we used to do up in Calgary.

Hart:
Hey monkey, drop the rope!

Owen reached up and caught a loop of rope as it was lowered from the ceiling. Pillman undid his and Owen’s titles and threaded them through the loop.

Hart:
Now take it up.

Owen and Pillman watched as the rope was raised again, lifting their title belts up into the air – 6 feet, 8 feet, 10 feet, 12 feet... And there they hung as Owen and Pillman smiled up at them.

Hart:
At the Great American Bash, this is how it’s going to be. The World Tag Team titles will be hung above the ring, well over 10 feet up in the air, and the only way to reach them will be to climb a ladder and take them down.

Pillman stepped forward. All traces of levity were gone from his face... except for a dangerous looking smile.

Pillman:
And if you think we’ve been dangerous with steel chairs... Just imagine how much damage we can do with some real hardware!

WCW Hotline Show Notes

Oh, to be a fly on the wall of the Dangerous Alliance locker room! We caught a glimpse of a heated discussion between World champion Rick Rude, Alliance head Paul E. Dangerously and Director of Covert Operations Madusa – but the cameraman was chased out before we saw too much. Suffice to say, however, that things are not completely rosy in the Alliance.

Sting and Diamond Dallas Page clashed over the recent Six Man title match and the way Page and the Diamond Exchange dragged Sting and his allies into the match. In Page’s highest profile singles match to date, the Diamond Exchange’s manager put in a great showing against Sting, but even with the Diamond Studd catching Sting’s leg at one point from the outside, he pushed through to score the win with a Scorpion Deathlock in the centre of the ring!

New champion! The Patriot put in a great showing against Terence Taylor as he tried to Beat The Champ, so much so that Alexandra York tried to get involved, only to be caught by the referee. York did leave her laptop lying on the ring mat, however, and Taylor seemed to be eyeing it up as a target for a Piledriver – but Patriot adroitly reversed into a back body drop onto the computer, and as Taylor reeled and York recovered her shattered device, Patriot teed up the Patriot Missile to pick up a huge win – and his first gold in WCW! After the bell Patriot was joined by Firebreaker Chip and Todd Champion who hoisted him onto their shoulders in celebration, as Patriot addressed the crowd, reminding them that America was not the land of capitalism – it was the land of opportunity!

After trashing the former World tag champions, the Calgary Connection then stepped into the ring with the Fabulous Malenkos. The brothers pushed the World champions hard, but came up short when Owen Hart pinned Joe Malenko after the Connection delivered Ice Cold In Alberta.

Youngsters Chris Kanyon and Billy Kidman stepped into the ring with the One Percenters, and when they recover from their beating may look on it as valuable experience, we suppose. Kanyon was brutally dashed to the mat with a Double Chokeslam by the Harris brothers to give the Kingdom pairing the win.

Michael Hayes and Shawn Michaels have clashed several times of late, and once more again here as the two argued and then had a brawl in the backstage area before being pulled apart.

Marcus Bagwell has had no luck lately, but maybe showed signs of a rebound here on Sunday night, upsetting former World champion Thomas Rich with a quick rollup to get the pin!

Bret Hart clashed with Scotty Flamingo in the night’s opening match, with the Hitman securing victory with a Sharpshooter over Flamingo. Flamingo must be feeling especially frustrated right now, with partner Johnny B. Badd on the injured list once more.

Show rating: B

OOC: I could be wrong, but that may be Patriot’s first win on the main roster. I don’t think he’s won a singles match, at least.

<em>While Sting is the logical choice, I really want to see Austin and Rude....I've always been a Steve Austin fan, and actually prefer "Stunning" over "Stone Cold", with TV title/Dangerous Alliance Steve just edging out Hollywood Blonde Steve for the number one spot.....the two Alliance members facing off will make for some interesting build, and while I don't see Austin taking the big one (yet) it should still be a great match</em></p><p> </p><p>

Commissioner Body’s efforts to destroy the Dangerous Alliance come to a head. Steve Austin beats Sting, Steve Austin faces Rick Rude, and no matter who wins, the Dangerous Alliance loses. Whatever happened to the spirit of fair competition, Ross?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Dangerously: </strong></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">Oh, what do you know, you hack?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Sting and Austin lined up against one another, sizing each other up as the bell rang. Austin talked smack as they closed the gap, jawing at Sting as the former champion smiled back – and then retaliated with a huge slap that sent Austin stumbling across the ring. Sting followed in with a back suplex that had Austin writhing in pain, sliding out of the ring to seek Madusa’s counsel, only for Sting to catch him with a baseball side that sent him crashing into the steel crowd barrier.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Sting howled for the crowd as Austin looked stunned, seemingly unable to grasp how his opponent had taken control so quickly. He slid carefully back into the ring, staying close to the corner as Madusa advised him from outside. As Sting closed in, Austin lunged forwards and tackled him to the mat, throwing punches and driving his knees into Sting’s gut as he tried to overwhelm his more experienced opponent. Staying on top he transitioned to a headlock, looking delighted to be in control of Sting. However, Sting powered upright and lifted Austin up into the air, before falling backwards with another back suplex that sent Austin crashing to the mat. </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

It took some time for Austin to really grow into the match, as Sting maintained a tight focus on his younger opponent. The former WCW World champion had the match under control, even at one point pressing Austin overhead and holding him up for several seconds, Austin looking panicked as Sting held him eight feet up in the air before pitching him to the mat with a crash.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

But Austin dug deep, holding Sting at bay just enough to avoid being pinned – including relying on Madusa to drag his leg under the bottom rope after a Stinger Splash – as he tried to break through Sting’s offence and test his defences. Eventually his moment came when Sting tried for another Stinger Splash, only for Austin to drop out of the way and Sting to hit the turnbuckles hard.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Ross: </strong></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">So, is this a good thing for the Alliance, Paul?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Steve deserves his shot – just not when Rick’s the World champion!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

With Sting vulnerable, Austin went straight to work, chopping Sting and levelling him with a vertical suplex before draping him over the middle rope and springing through the ropes, guillotining Sting and snapping him back onto the mat, clutching at his throat.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Austin capitalised on Sting’s vulnerability, working over his neck and throat with everything he could think of, clearly aiming for a Stun Gun to put Sting away. Sting was wholly on the defensive for several minutes as Austin made him suffer, scoring several two counts and dealing shots to Sting’s legs as well to take away from his athleticism whenever he couldn’t reach his neck.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Austin sent Sting into the ropes and lifted him up for a Stun Gun, but Sting pivoted on his shoulders and dropped into a sunset flip for a close two. </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Austin hooked Sting up once more for a Stun Gun, but Sting held onto the top rope and blocked the move. Kicking Austin away, Sting moved slowly across the ring to try and take Austin down. The two traded punches before Sting whipped Austin towards the corner. He followed in with a Stinger Splash, but his reduced speed was such that Austin tackled him out of the corner, with the two men crashing to the mat.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Randy Savage clashed with Brian Pillman in a barnstorming match that saw both of these supreme athletes going to the air as well as engaging in a stand up brawl. Pillman may be as fast a rising star as has been seen in wrestling over this last year or so, and had no problem standing toe to toe with the veteran star. But as with the tag title match last month, Savage was made vulnerable by the presence of Miss Elizabeth. Going to the top rope, his attention was momentarily diverted by Owen Hart approaching Elizabeth, which let Pillman slam him from the top, before following up on the disoriented Savage with a Shining Wizard for the pin and the victory!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

After the bell Savage would make his way backstage to find Scott Steiner</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Savage: </strong></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">Where were you, Scott? Where were you when the Calgary Connection came after the Macho Man?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Steiner’s response probably did nothing to allay Savage’s frustration.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Steiner: </strong></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">Maybe I was where I wanted to be, Randy. Maybe I was right where everyone else was when my brother got attacked by those thugs!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Now, who would want to provoke the Kingdom? As though Big Van Vader wasn’t bad enough, you have the One Percenters, Mr Hughes and Harley Race, so would you want to be caught loitering outside their locker room? But that’s Cactus Jack – and apparently he wants to know more about the Kingdom. Is he making plans for revenge against Big Van Vader? Whatever he may have been thinking, he got to see the Kingdom in action on Saturday night against Nikita Koloff, Ricky Steamboat, Ron Simmons and El Tigre Blanco. Koloff and Simmons’ strength and Steamboat’s savvy and skill all saw them fair well, more or less, but when Vader caught Blanco in the ring the big masked man absolutely devastated the smaller masked man, before pinning him after a Vader Bomb!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

How great is it to see Barry WIndham and Dustin Rhodes back to full health? After missing six weeks and two weeks respectively due to the actions of the Dangerous Alliance, they sought a measure of revenge on Saturday Night as they tackled Rick Rude and Arn Anderson in a wild fight that spilled out to the arena floor repeatedly and even into the front row of the crowd on one occasion as Rhodes and Anderson traded blows! With so much aggression on display, it’s little wonder that the referee couldn’t contain the contest and eventually had to call for the bell and a double disqualification!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The Patriot picked up his first high-profile victory in WCW last Sunday night, defeating Terence Taylor for the WCW Television title! Patriot stepped up to the plate to defend against the York Foundation’s Robert Gibson here, and showed off his strength and agility, drilling Gibson with the Patriot Missile to pick up the win.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Bret Hart was being interviewed backstage, but before he could answer more than a question or two the York Foundation interrupted, promoting themselves as Hart was left with no choice but to stand aside, pushed into the background as Alexandra York and her clients boasted and bragged.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The Ultimate Warrior defeated Michael Hayes with a Running Splash. No shame in that for the Freebird – Warrior is an incredibly intense and powerful athlete! So why Shawn Michaels thought it was a good night to harass Hayes once more about his age is beyond your correspondent. Hayes retaliated with a right, a left, another right... Michaels was left reeling as Hayes was pulled away from him by officials and other wrestlers, spitting rage at the Rough Diamond, who looked shocked at Hayes reaction!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric Flair and the Thrillseekers were clearly paying close attention to the Savage/Pillman bout, as the Nature Boy told the young Canadians that sometimes they’d have to fight fire with fire to get ahead in the business. The youngsters seemed to be mulling this over – perhaps Flair For The Gold Consulting is having a real impact on the duo!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Sometimes WCW’s finest can seem like true titans, given their size and strength, but sometimes we get to see behind the curtain – such as when the Diamond Mine arrived at the arena this Saturday to find their reserved parking spot taken. Vinnie Vegas and the Diamond Studd reacted like anyone might: Angrily! Smothers and Armstrong didn’t seem too bothered by their </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>faux pas</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">, instead suggesting that Vegas and Studd head outside and park with the fans, a suggestion that went down about as well as you might expect!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div> <div style="text-align:center;"><p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><p><strong>Show rating: A*</strong></p></div><p></p><p></p><p>

</p></div><p></p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="3DcoZDk.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/3DcoZDk.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p>

</p></div><p></p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><p></p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="XkZqC4i.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/XkZqC4i.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p>

</p></div><p></p><p> </p><p>

<em>OOC: A*! Holy cow! That’s my first A* show in TEW 2016; Pretty sure it’s my first A* show since I stopped playing my MAW save on TEW 2007. For those keeping track, that’s 10 years I’ve spent with MAW, SWF, PSW (really should finish that diary at some point) and WCW, plus two Road to Glory games. Lots of A shows, lots of A* matches... No A* shows. Until now.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>3 A-rated matches in a row and not a decisive outcome between them. Who says that Traditional means giving away clean finishes to matches?</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Credit to Michaels and Hayes, too – an A* segment to officially turn Hayes face ought to help his momentum. Hayes moves from his Fabulous Heel gimmick to Inspirational Leader, apparently helping others believe he’s not </em><em><span style="text-decoration:underline;">actually</span></em><em> 10 years older than his birth certificate proclaims qualifies. I’m open to suggestions on good gimmick packs, because there were pretty slim pickings for this... although turning Michael Hayes face was never going to give me a huge amount of choice.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>WWF’s counter programming was an episode of All American Wrestling (a B show, to be fair) that saw Beau Beverley beating the Cheetah Kid (aka The Public Enemy’s Rocco Rock), Honky Tonk Man beating Jerry Sags and Berzerker and One Man Gang beating Virgil and British Bulldog (‘The Rebels’) in the main event/match of the night. For that they got a C-. Their last four episodes of Superstars have scored B, C+, B, B. Our last four Saturday Nights have scored A*, A, A, A. Hogan and Mr Perfect (between them scoring three A main events on the B-rated shows) keep them floating, I think.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>And because I was curious I looked at the numbers for this show: It was a 96 overall with Pillman/Savage a 94, Texans/Alliance getting a 90 and Sting/Austin scoring a </em><em><span style="text-decoration:underline;">99</span></em><em>. Sting/Michaels the other week was also a 99, and the two are the highest-rated matches in the game thus far (I’ve had two other 99 matches, but the game rates them third and fourth. I don’t know whether there’s any real rhyme or reason to the ratings for identical scores.)</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>The common man to matches 1-6 on the list is Sting, perhaps not surprisingly, but does make me think I need to give him a bit more focus in-game; I’m not sure he’s had a promo of note in the last two months, albeit that for early-90s Sting promos were never his strong point.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>At least one of Sting, Rick Rude and Arn Anderson is in each of the top 10 matches. Pillman/Savage from this show breaks the cycle at #11.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>The top ten by performer:</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>6 – Sting, Rude</em></p><p>

<em>5 – Austin, Anderson</em></p><p>

<em>3 –Steamboat, Savage </em></p><p>

<em>1 – Michaels, Windham, S. Steiner, Rhodes, Pillman, O. Hart, Luger, B. Hart</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Steiner, Rhodes, Pillman and Owen are in for War Games. Rhodes and Pillman have had A-rated matches elsewhere, Owen and Steiner are waiting for theirs. I doubt it will be long for either of them *coughladdermatchcough*...</em></p><p> </p><p>

The night’s main event saw the Young Pistols clashing with Steve Austin and Owen Hart of the Dangerous Alliance, and unsurprisingly it was a high-tempo affair with the more experienced Pistols taking the fight straight to their aggressive opponents. It seemed like the Pistols had their opponents on the back foot, but the sudden arrival of the Diamond Mine at ringside caught them off guard. As Diamond Studd and Tracy Smothers argued, the distracted official failed to see Vinnie Vegas slide into the ring and crash a roll of silver dollars into Armstrong’s jaw, leaving him reeling and open to a Stun Gun from Austin for the pin!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Afterwards Smothers snatched a microphone as Armstrong nursed his wounded jaw.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Cactus Jack and Nikita Koloff were both in action on Sunday night before their brawl, with Cactus overwhelming Dean Malenko, before Koloff had a wild brawl with Ron Harris that saw the Post-Soviet Superstar emerge triumphant!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Bret Hart made it clear that he couldn’t care less if the York Foundation crashed his interview the other night; He may care more than the Stocks And Shares Express crashed his match with Terence Taylor, though, with the Foundation trio leaving Hart lying. Alexandra York claimed afterwards that it wasn’t anything personal – Hart was just an international money-making opportunity!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

We’re not sure if we’re spoilt by Television champions retaining their title for five defences, or by regular new champions, but Commissioner Ventura’s Beat The Champ series has definitely allowed some unexpected names to take a spell in the spotlight! The Patriot opened Main Event as the champion, but left without the gold as Tim Horner of the Lightning Express caught the masked man in a Rolling Cradle to lift the title! Horner and his partner Brad Armstrong celebrated after the bell – to no-one’s surprise!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

There are plenty of graphics from this period that'd work great to show this switch -- "Surfer" Sting, like Hogan, went through an "in between" phase before changing his gimmick. </p><p> </p><p> That Sting -- the one on early Nitro -- looks a bit more serious and focused. This change could explain why, in a rematch, Sting could take out Rude. </p><p> </p><p> </p><blockquote data-ipsquote="" class="ipsQuote" data-ipsquote-contentapp="forums" data-ipsquote-contenttype="forums" data-ipsquote-contentid="42193" data-ipsquote-contentclass="forums_Topic"><div>He stood up and walked over to the coffee tray, pouring two cups and handing one to Ric. “Now, one last thing: Titles.”<p> </p><p> “I know I had the Six Man titles but-“</p><p> </p><p> Turner waved him into silence.</p><p> </p><p> “Ric, I have no problem with how you’ve booked yourself. You’re getting the Thrillseekers in front of the camera – and the Diamond Exchange. That’s good. But you have four sets of tag titles, counting the NWA belts, and the four singles titles, including the NWA Women’s title. Am I forgetting anything?”</p><p> </p><p> “No sir, although the NWA belts-“</p><p> </p><p> “-are on WCW personnel, and WCW personnel who are substantially bigger names than anyone the NWA board is likely to book them against, as this letter points out.”</p><p> </p><p> Turner handed over a sheet of paper bearing the familiar figurehead of the National Wrestling Alliance. Ric scanned it quickly.</p><p> </p><p> “This doesn’t seem too bad. They appreciate the extra gate from having Madusa or Arn and Steve about... And when the time comes, they’ll drop the belts, sure. Are they worried that they’ll use creative control?”</p><p> </p><p> “That’s the champions’ prerogative when they visit other promotions, of course,” Turner said. “But the NWA wants all the other promotions to have a chance of booking the champions.”</p></div></blockquote><p> </p><p> I've come with a theory here: I think that creating and keeping a WCW World Heavyweight Title was a bit of a mistake. Rater, they should have made the United States Title and the United States Tag Titles the main titles. Then, you add an equivalent to the WWF Intercontinental Title in the midcard/upper midcard for international stars -- like how Bulldog, Piper and Bret all held the title in the Golden Era WWF. </p><p> </p><p> Unlike the NWA World Heavyweight, the US Titles weren't recognized internationally, so each territory had their own champion -- the Mid-Atlantic Version, in particular, featured in several memorable and over feuds. </p><p> </p><p> This would be a good spot for the NWA World Heavyweight Title. </p><p> </p><p> And if you put the main strap on a champion not from America? Makes for great opportunities for a foreign face or a overly zealous American heel to challenge for the title. And of course, with the Clash, there's always the option for temporary unification.</p>
