WCW: Dangerous Territory

Recommended Posts

<p>Been off the boards for a few months but caught back up tonight. Great Clash card I have to say.</p><p> </p><p>

Love the re-emergence of Flair back into the title scene and getting a Sting to tag with him was a great move. </p><p> </p><p>

You drew out the story with the Hitman and the DA well and glad to see Bret not getting tied down in that. Being his own man will get him to the title quicker, just look at how Austin gave up his opportubity in the 3 way against Sting.</p><p> </p><p>

Obviously Arn is on his way out of the DA and will be rejoining Ric as he goes against Rude. Reforming of the Horsemen soon, with Ric, Arn, Barry and someone else? I know I’d like to see that with the eventual heel turn down the line and I know who’d I like as the 4th Horsemen (no not Bret).</p><p> </p><p>

Again great show</p>

<p>Really good show, that would have been one hell of a Clash to watch....Windham snapping was a nice touch, as was Sting being the man to pick up the win in the main event, he needed that and it doesn't knock Ric's credibility as the next challenger at all.</p><p> </p><p>

Hopefully Bret Hart's little Declaration of Independence gives Arn the nudge he needs to exit the Dangerous Alliance, and with The Nature Boy's shot at Rude right around the corner, there's probably never been a better time to reform the Horsemen....Flair, Arn, Windham? Dustin? Vs. Rude, Austin, Pillman & Hart? Sounds like a can't miss programme to me</p>

I will echo the others in saying that I highly enjoyed the Clash. The list of "near future" World title challengers is getting pretty long. You've got Flair lined up next, Sting and Koloff are always a possibility to jump into a credible challenge, Warrior is around the corner, Vader should only need a little more build up to get into a World title run, you've got Steiner and Savage who can tear the house down, Austin hasn't totally squandered his chances, and Bret has made his intentions clear. There are a lot of elements going on that are making this a really fun read!

He's so strongly defined himself as the World Champion that I fully expect him to make it into 1993 with the Big Gold Belt still around his belt. And the fact that we can't really predict who will actually become the next World Champion is incredible. Bret after Rude would feel like too much ex-WWF talent, Austin has got all the talent in the world but he also has all the time in the world and years ahead of him in the game. Besides them, Sting still has a shot as the "Icon of WCW", and someone like Vader can't ever really be discounted. Dustin Rhodes could very well be a lock, but a certain other someone sort of defined that run and our beloved booker here might be interested in different prospects. And Scott Steiner is a heel right now. </p><p> </p><p> Everyone else like Ric (running the company), Diamond Exchange (midcard act until the Dangerous Alliance is destroyed), Nikita Koloff (too much of a veteran), Ron Simmons (outclassed), Warrior (ugh...), Savage (older and too much a WWF face), Ricky Steamboat (older) and Arn (older) all feel like contenders but not in the contention.</p>

<p>Yes, we're in an interesting place with champions and contenders right now. For those who like stats, visualisations and/or contrasting colours:</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:center;"><img alt="hUUnBYq.jpg" data-src="https://i.imgur.com/hUUnBYq.jpg" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:left;"><p>That's the main event, upper midcard and selected midcarders as of early October. There are obvious strengths and weaknesses here: Bret Hart and Ric Flair are <em>the</em> exceptional talents, while Randy Savage is a hair away from being there (and was probably the best in the WWF) and Ricky Steamboat is outstanding too. Flair has the only A* overall for performance stats, but thanks to weeks and months of endless practise in the post show, he's elevated most of the uppercard to A/A* entertainment, which is just dandy.</p><p> </p><p>

</p><div style="text-align:left;"><p>All credit to Rick Rude for lasting eight months without any outstanding top row skills, or even a B+ average in perfromance. What he <em>does</em> have is mic skills and one of the highest SQs in the save; Put them together, and you get someone who walks like a champion, talks like a champion, and gets over as a champion. Also note his near-clone in the upper midcard: Diamond Studd and Rick Rude could be brothers. Vinnie Vegas isn't as good as his partner, but his entertainment, SQ, size and menace make him an easy uppercarder as he improves - and only Rude and Michaels have higher sex appeal among the men. Big Sexy indeed! As for Michaels, he almost has it all - although a slightly higher SQ would be useful. High Sex Appeal in a man generally only means one thing in wrestling (Jim Cornette voice): "He's a heel!"</p><p>

</p></div><p></p><p></p><p> </p><p>

Steamboat was my backup in case Rude's reign failed, incidentally. I knew he could produce on top, especially for WCW, but his entertainment skills would need work. He's the <span style="text-decoration:underline;">only</span> WCW talent with a top row stat over B+, but note who <span style="text-decoration:underline;">does</span> get B+: Vader, Bret Hart and <em>Cactus Jack</em>. <span style="text-decoration:underline;">Twice</span>. Arn Anderson I think is slightly underrated in the game but, like Flair, it's less what he does, and more <em>how</em> he does it. Even so, a C for SQ probably puts the kibosh on him moving into the very top tier. Cactus will also suffer for that C- in Star Quality - and his Menace is only C+, too, so not enough to elevate him that much.</p><p> </p><p>

Warrior, for obvious reasons, probably isn't going to take the belt... although if I were the kind of booker to hotshot titles, that A in SQ would put Rude to shame. His brother-in-paint Sting is verging on Flair country skill-wise, and cracking an A average for performance really could see him making the 90s his own.</p><p> </p><p>

Dustin Rhodes has probably grown the most in the near-two years of the game. Barry Windham is a supremely competent talent with a probable NWA title reign in his future, but who's probably never going to go on top in WCW in the 1990s. Ron Simmons is a good hand, but probably nothing more right now. The Thrillseekers are going to have an amazing run in the tag division. Owen Hart is probably the new Enforcer (or at least in that bracket with his buddy Mick Foley), Steve Austin is going to be something special any day now, Scott Steiner is in position for maximum benefit from a singles run...</p><p> </p><p>

...and Brian Pillman probably <em>is</em> going to be the wrestler of the 90s. Of all the many and varied screwups WCW made, failing to capitalise on Pillman in all his years under contract was their biggest. But he has business in the tag division and isn't quite at the World title level yet. </p><p> </p><p>

Not that, just going by the stats, Rick Rude should be there now...</p><p>

<p>OOC: More meddling – Chris Jericho and Shawn Michaels now have a strong friendship. I guess I have to hope that Jericho’s the bigger influence in that friendship! And right after wondering about Ric and Blanco, Ric decided to pass on some tips on mic work to his protégé.</p><p> </p><p>

A* show number 3 in the diary, not too hard to be so good with this kind of talent at my disposal! It scored a 98 overall, so was my best show of the diary – the other A* shows both got a 96.</p><p> </p><p>

The main event (99) and semi-final (98) take 3rd and 7th spots in my best matches, respectively. The tag title match was ‘only’ a 90 so comes in at 29th.</p><p> </p><p>

Notable post show push updates: Konnan moves from enhancement to lower midcard, Cactus Jack and Ron Simmons drop from upper midcard to midcard (although Cactus gained a few points nationwide), Dustin Rhodes and Nikita Koloff drop to the upper midcard and Scott Steiner passes them as he moves into the main event.</p><p> </p><p>

I gave praise to Koloff, Vader and Arn after the show. Koloff and Vader had a show with ‘sensational wrestling and fantastic heat’... which only got a B-. Even with scripting, the match was heavily dinged for psychology; But they gave their all, and effort should be appreciated. Arn had an outstanding match with Bret, putting him over huge – Bret’s now at A overness nationwide, having been at C+ when he joined the company in the spring. It’s deliberately been a slow build for Bret, but he was my favourite wrestler for a very long time. He’s going to be more of a featured player going forwards.</p><p> </p><p>

Would you believe that Michael Hayes is #1 on the Who’s Hot list after the Clash? Tracy Smothers is #5, so apparently the Diamond Exchange is doing good work there. Marcus Bagwell is #1 on the Who’s Not list, apparently a 0.24 record isn’t enough to build momentum in WCW – it was 0.13 before his recent run of form alongside Steamboat, which may have been more of an issue.</p><p> </p><p>

And finally, Hayes was also up to a spot of clique building – is that irony? – when he forged a new friendship between Ron Simmons and Robert Gibson during the show.</p><p> </p><p>

<p><em>Surprised to see Michael Hayes so over. Granted, I know very little of his actual career as an in-ring guy (he's Dok Hendrix to me!). Knowing this, I probably shouldn't have been so surprised to see him get the better of HBK over and over again.</em></p><p> </p><p>

<p><a href="https://art19.com/shows/something-to-wrestle-with-bruce-prichard" rel="external nofollow">A doot doot doot!</a></p><p> </p><p>

Hayes was a Southern legend in wrestling - leading the original Freebirds alongside Buddy Roberts and Terry Gordy, he was the lead villain (and therefore main draw) against the Von Erich family in the World Class territory in the early 80s. <a href="https://tjrwrestling.net/wrestlings-greatest-feuds-the-fabulous-freebirds-vs-the-von-erichs-by-hank-mcallen/" rel="external nofollow">This is a decent summary of a feud</a> that did incredible business in Texas for several years, but it's hard to look back at that time and not feel an incredible sadness over <a href="https://prowrestlingstories.com/pro-wrestling-stories/kevin-von-erich-last-von-erich/" rel="external nofollow">how incredibly sad the story of the Von Erich boys is</a>, even now.</p><p> </p><p>

In JCP/WCW, Hayes was teamed with Jimmy 'Jam' Garvin* as a new incarnation of the Freebirds, Garvin having been an unofficial/occasional member/ally in World Class. The team had some success, winning the World and US tag belts twice, and the Six Man titles as well, but they were pretty much just another team in late 80s/early 90s WCW alongside the Road Warriors, Steiners and the Midnight + Rock n Roll Expresses. Hayes was briefly US champion as well, but even being a fan of his and (surprise!) being fond of late 80s/early 90s WCW I was only reminded of this when looking him up on Wikipedia.</p><p> </p><p>

Once the WCW Freebirds had run their course Hayes kicked about for a bit in singles and tags before landing a job in WWF, where he remains to this day. Some former employees have nicer things to say about him than others, shall we say, but that's for another time. In this diary, he's a troll on-screen and a handy avatar for a certain type of booking approach behind the scenes... and pretty much my first impression of JCP/WCW was him being a consummate heel in a match against the Young Pistols on Worldwide back in 1990 or so. He'll always have a place in my WCW, even if that's just stirring the pot for bigger names...</p><p> </p><p>

<span style="font-size:8px;">* You may also know Garvin as being the kayfabe brother of 'Rugged' Ronnie Garvin, former NWA World Champion. I mention this because Ronnie was actually Jimmy's stepfather, despite only being seven years older than him. Wrestling families are rarely simple.</span></p>

The York Foundation managed to double down on bagging the main event on Saturday Night, also securing the semi-final spot for Terence Taylor as he tackled Ric Flair. The new number one contender to the World title was in fine form, whooooing at all and sundry and inviting Alexandra York for a ride on Space Mountain, but even though he seemed out to have fun, he still had the ring smarts to keep Taylor from gaining the decisive advantage, eventually securing the win with the Figure Four Leglock.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The Calgary Connection were adamant when approached by Eric Bischoff: No rematch! Much of what else the young pairing had to say about Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham is, frankly, unrepeatable – but the gist is that they held onto their World tag titles at the Clash, and that’s the only opportunity the Texans will be getting!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The main event saw the Stocks And Shares Express tackling Barry Windham and Dustin Rhodes, and the veterans smartly went after Windham early and often, trying to drive him into the kind of angry recklessness that cost his side at the Clash. It didn’t seem to take much for Windham to start boiling over, although it must be said that the Express seemed to regret pushing him to his tipping point – you don’t poke an angry bear, after all! But rather than his going completely off the rails, Windham’s raging rampage was cut short as Rhdoes tagged himself in and took it to the Express, capitalising on the damage Windham had dealt to deftly take Gibson out with a lunging lariat, before snatching a diving Morton out of the air with a powerslam, and then delivering a Running Bulldog to pick up the win!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The business relationship between the Diamond Exchange and Dangerous Alliance has had benefits for both sides, and here the Young Pistols and Michael Hayes felt that for themselves. A spirited match against Rick Rude, Arn Anderson and Steve Austin was just getting going when the Diamond Exchange rushed the ring and jumped the new Six Man champions, laying waste to them as the Alliance trio looked on in varying shades of amusement and indifference.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Patricia Martin managed to track down both Cactus Jack and Scott Steiner for Saturday Night viewers – give that woman a hazardous duty bonus! Cactus said that he’d done Jesse Ventura a favour by stepping in the ring with Scott Steiner and Randy Savage, and now he was looking for a favour from the Commissioner – a match he’d been looking forward to for a long, long time... Steiner was a little more forthcoming, saying that Savage was yesterday’s news, and all Steiner was interested in was what he could get for himself today, tomorrow, and beyond.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Nikita Koloff and Ron Simmons were reviewing the tape of Koloff’s match with Vader backstage when the Thrillseekers passed by, and saw fit to offer some suggestions of their own about how to tackle a monster like Vader. Neither Koloff nor Simmons saw this in the spirit we believe the young Canadians offered it, and now next week we’ll see the veterans and the youngsters in a tag match!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

After his stunning showing against Arn Anderson at the Clash, Bret Hart offered some clues to his next move in WCW – tackling anyone above him in the rankings, whoever they may be! Dare we say it? A battle pitting Scorpion against Sharpshooter could be huge!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ricky Steamboat moved one step closer to the title shot of his choice and banked a cool $1,000 on Saturday night, but El Tigre Blanco made him work for it! The masked luchador, backed by his partner Konnan, took the fight right to the veteran champion, who had Marcus Bagwell in his corner watching closely. The young starlet had a great seat to see a tremendous fight as Steamboat had to hold out against his fiery challenger, who may even have resorted to bending the rules a little here and there in his effort to regain the Television title. Steamboat, however, has been there, seen that, and bought the t-shirt, and was able to land the crucial blow with a Diving Crossbody to pick up the win! Afterwards, Steamboat shook Blanco’s hand, acknowledging his efforts.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Sting had a challenger of his own to deal with in the form of Brutal K’s Satoshi Kojima. The young Japanese competitor fought hard at first, but when it became clear that Sting’s greater strength and experience would tell against him, Kojima called his partner Koji Kanemoto into the ring and the two attacked Sting until the referee was able to force his way between them, allowing Sting to regain the advantage with a double clothesline. Brutal K bailed out of the ring and headed to the back, leaving Sting looking frustrated at an unsatisfactory result.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Welcome back Firebreaker Chip! The young patriot has been on the shelf of late, but the Special Forces are now reunited and put up a great effort against the Lightning Express, albeit falling victim at the end to a sneaky spot of rule bending by Tim Horner. Still, perhaps the Special Forces will take solace in the presence of the young lady at ringside, who was watching this match very closely indeed!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ric followed Dusty into the locker room as fast as the older man’s legs could lead him. Konnan was being pulled back by three or four other wrestlers, as a few others tended to his victim.

“What. The. Hell,” Flair snapped. Konnan snarled, and spat on the man who was still lying on the floor. One of the wrestlers thumped Konnan across the back of the head – Flair realised belatedly that it was an unmasked El Tigre Blanco. Konnan simmered down some, although he was still glaring daggers from behind his mask.

Flair looked at the man down on the floor. His jaw dropped.

Pee Wee?
” He looked at the referee, then up at Dusty, who looked as shocked as Ric felt. They turned to look at Konnan.

“Konnan, what the hell?”

Blanco and the others seemed to feel that Konnan could be trusted, so they released him and allowed him to straighten himself out.

“He mocked me, what was I supposed to do?”

Ric looked down at Pee Wee Anderson again, and then back up at Konnan.

“He’s a
referee
! Why’d you have to do
anything
?”

“He mocked me!”

“He’s a referee!”

Ric and Konnan stared at one another. Recognising an impasse, Ric crouched down to Anderson.

“Pee Wee, you okay?”

Anderson was clutching his jaw. He spat out some blood, which landed on his shirt.

“What do
you
think, Ric?”

“Sure, silly question. Don’t worry, we’ll get you looked at.”

Those helping Anderson helped him to his feet, but Anderson wouldn’t leave the locker room.

“What’s happening to him?” he demanded, looking at Konnan. Konnan stared back, no sign of remorse visible beneath the mask.

“Pee Wee, why’d Konnan attack you?”

“He said I was making fun of Hispanics, which I
wasn’t
, and then he just decked me! He must’ve hit me three or four times before anyone could get on him.”

“Konnan?”

“He was mocking me, Ric – Mr Flair, sir. He was doing some dumb Latino accent thing.”

Ric looked at Anderson.

“My girlfriend is Puerto Rican, Ric. I wasn’t making fun, just telling a story about her.”

“Oh.”

For the first time, Konnan looked abashed, but he said nothing more, even as Anderson scowled at him.

“Konnan, this doesn’t happen again, understand? You screwed up – and you took it out on someone who’s smaller than you, and who can’t defend himself like one of the boys. I don’t know what on earth they do down in Mexico, but here in America you’re lucky I’m not firing your ass right now.”

“Yeah, I got you boss. Sorry, Pee Wee.”

“My name’s Randy,” Anderson snapped. “Ric, is that it? I think I lost a tooth!”

Ric looked around the locker room. Most of those watching were doing so with interest, but it wasn’t apparent that many people were especially inclined to take a side.

I could send Konnan home for a couple of weeks but...

Boys will be boys!

“Konnan will be paying for any medical work you need, Randy, and your tab for the rest of the loop too. But this seems like a misunderstanding – a big one, but I’ve made my decision.”

Anderson looked unhappy as he was led away, and Konnan walked sheepishly back to his locker. Blanco approached Ric.

“Thanks, man. Konnan... Well, you’re right. Things are kind of different down in Mexico. I saw that when I was younger, and I know it’s no different now. Konnan may be Cuban, but he hung around down there long enough that he picked up some of their ways, man, and part of that is pride in being Latino. If he wasn’t before he went to work in CMLL, he is now, man.”

“I get it, just... keep an eye on him. I know he’s got more experience than you, but...”

“Yeah, I know, I grew up in the business. I’ve seen it all, Ric. I’ve got your back.”

Blanco walked off to check on Konnan.

“That’s a good kid there, Ric.”

“One of the best, Dream. Give him five years, he’ll be at the top. But Dusty, I need you to stick close these next few shows. Make sure Pee Wee’s okay, no screwing with Konnan’s matches or anything.”

“You got it, Ric. You can count on me!”

Dream left to check on the victim of Konnan’s overreaction, and Ric walked back to his office.

A month ago I probably would have canned Konnan for that. Pee Wee’s been a good guy here, and Konnan was a nobody... but just lately the fans have been reacting to him. I figure he’s worth a little patience.

And if he makes us money, well, what referee ever did that?

*

OOC: You can go ahead and ignore the result of the six man match as printed in Saturday’s results; Evidently I forgot to book a winner of the match, just that it should end with a DQ and have three run-ins...

WCW Main Event

Beat The Champ: Ricky Steamboat © vs. Steve Austin – WCW Television Title

These two had a fantastic rivalry so this should be a great match, Austin winning here though potentially sets up a future match with Sting for the US Title, which is Austin’s logical next “step up” after already holding the TV and NWA Tag Titles

Bret Hart vs. Tony Anthony

The Hitman keeps doing his thing against the dirty white boy plumber

Mark Hildreth and Eiji Ezaki vs. The Stocks And Shares Express[/b[

Ricky and Robert still have a part to play, even at their advanced ages....future US Tag Champs? I wouldn’t mind seeing the York Foundation with gold again

Blanco & Konnan vs. The One Percenters

Konnan eats the pin.....poor Pee Wee

Marcus Bagwell vs. Terence Taylor

A big win for Bagwell over an established star

Steve Austin and Ricky Steamboat have plenty of history since the Dragon’s return to WCW, and a lot of that revolves around the Television title! For the two to face off on Main Event saw a return to hostilities that have been simmering over the last year, blowing up occasionally such as during War Games in May. The night’s main event lacked the bloody intensity of that clash, but still proved both that Austin is growing day-by-day as a performer, and that Steamboat is still the exceptional fighter he’s been for more than a decade! The result was an outstanding contest between veteran and rising star – or Superstar – with both men throwing everything at one another, slowly at first but with rapidly mounting pace and effort. Austin seemed to have the match won as he rolled through on a crossbody attempt, but Steamboat improbably turned the rollup into an inside cradle that Austin was only just barely able to escape from. Austin barked at the referee, claiming Steamboat had pulled his tights. With the official distracted, Madusa pepper sprayed Steamboat in the eyes, and as Steamboat writhed in pain Austin blasted him with the Stun Gun to take the pin – and the title!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

El Tigre Blanco didn’t have a great Saturday night, but he and Konnan ended their weekend on something of a high as they defeated the One Percenters – albeit after the Harris twins got too violent for referee Pee Wee Anderson, who threw out the match when Ron and Don brought steel chairs into the ring. The masked pair were mocked by the Calgary Connection – and responded by demanding a match against the World tag champions! We hear that match will take place this coming Saturday night!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Bret Hart is out to climb the ladder, but he knows to be wary of those also out to climb the ladder from beneath him. A victory over Tony Anthony on Sunday night will have helped to maintain distance between the two – and allows the Hitman to keep looking upwards.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

After two disappointing defeats to Barry Windham and Dustin Rhodes, the Stocks And Shares Express rebounded with a victory over young talents Mark Hildreth and Eiji Ezaki. Terence Taylor, meanwhile, got the better of young Marcus Bagwell, catching him with a rollup – and with his feet on the ropes! Ms. York’s laptop evidently knows how to cheat!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

1st October, the national battle commences between WCW and WWF. As things stand here are the key stats for the companies:</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

WCW is the bigger company in the States, averaging 83 in popularity everywhere outside Puerto Rico. Our popularity is on the rise nationwide with most regions gaining 1% in September, Puerto Rico gaining 3% and Hawaii gaining 2%.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

WWF is the bigger company worldwide, but this is a national battle and that’s not really relevant. Outside Puerto Rico and Hawaii, they’re averaging 76 in popularity nationwide.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

WCW has $33.8 million in the bank, making ~ $1.3 million over the last two months.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

WWF has $23.1 million in the bank, making ~ $1.8 million over the last two months. I thought that this would be a lot less, but WWF’s product is geared towards making money even more than WCW’s.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

But the big factor is the relative drawing power of the two companies. The WWF, of course, has Hulk Hogan – far and away the biggest draw in the game, with a staggering 960 score. Next is Roddy Piper with 819, Sgt Slaughter on 664, Jake Roberts on 659 and the Undertaker on 644. The Federation therefore has a total drawing power of 3,746.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

WCW can’t come close to matching Hogan; Our top draw is Ultimate Warrior, on 880. Steve Austin on 819 is the equal of Roddy Piper, but after that we have Sting on 818, Randy Savage on 815 and Rick Rude on 809.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

While we can’t match Hogan, our strength in depth is far, far greater than the WWF’s, and it’s going to be interesting to see how the battle plays out – our draw is 4,141, almost 400 points greater than the Federation’s. They won’t – they</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em> can’t</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> – close that gap any time soon. There simply isn’t anyone on the free market who can close that gap, and if there was then we’d sign them. As for getting someone over, WWF isn’t doing that very well at the moment. Their World champion, lest we forget, isn’t over and isn’t </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>getting</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> over – </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

We held off from rising to National for exactly this reason – I couldn’t be sure of our total draw, and wanted to put safe distance between us and the minimum requirement of 8 regions at 65% importance. As of 1st October 1992, we have nine regions at 70% importance or higher, and we’re looking upwards rather than down.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The WWF... has eight regions over 65% importance, of which the Mid West and South West are exactly on 65%. No margin for error, they’re practically guaranteed to lose this month’s battle, they can’t put on shows as good as us (their best show in 1992 was an 88 for WrestleMania, we had seven shows in September alone that outscored that) and, all in all, it looks to be a short battle – over by Christmas, possibly.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Oh, yes, and Greg Valentine’s still World champion. The title prestige has dropped from 100 in June to 85 right now, with his last title defence scoring a 75. Our last televised World title defence to score that lowly was in September. September </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>1991</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">. He’s gained about 10 points of overness since winning the title. Not 10 points per region – 10 points in total. He’s not going to solve the WWF’s problems.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Greg Valentine!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

I don’t focus much on the developmental system as it’s unlikely many of the workers in it will graduate to the main roster before this game ends. However, a few random notes that have caught my eye:</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Erik Watts was signed to the company in January, and his Psychology has risen 16 points to a B-. He can’t </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>wrestle </em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">yet, but he could make a fair road agent some day.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Billy Kidman got picked up in May, and is becoming a capable brawler to back up his flying. He’s even learning to work the mic. A bit, anyway. He’s still Billy Kidman.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Paul Levesque is one of the best young brawlers in the business with a complementary set of chain wrestling skills to keep him from being too one dimensional. He looks like he needs to come up to the main roster for a while to improve his performance skills, though, and his improvements in the physical stats all seem to be focused on his lifting weights...</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Rey Mysterio broke his cheekbone several months back and is still recovering, which has slowed his progress. It’s probably not too much of a stretch to call him the best young worker in the game, however, with a C+ average for performance skills, C average for mic skills, C- average for technical skills... and a B average for flying, not that I can take much credit for that. And he’s </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>17 years old</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">. He’ll recover from the broken cheekbone in time for Halloween Havoc, so if El Tigre Blanco and Konnan are booked in a six-man match with a mystery partner for the big show, well...</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Chikako Shiratori is a so-so young joshi worker with an A for sex appeal – that puts her behind only Trisa ‘Beulah’ Hayes, Kimberly Page, Tammy Lynn Sytch and Magnificent Mimi. Super Crazy’s not far behind Rey, and is the better flier right now, but slightly less well-rounded. His performance stats are flying up the charts right now, and another few months or so in development could really see him explode.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

And Van Hammer sucks, but marginally less than he did in 1992 in real life. When his deal expires, he can head back out to the indies and stink the joint out less than he did beforehand. He also gained about 8 points in overness nationwide for losing on the last Main Event, so he can ask for a bit more money and sit higher on the card for IWCCW, PWA, or wherever he ends up. I’m a nice guy, sometimes...</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

I’ll get to predictions once I’m off my phone, but it’s just occurred to me that I’m 38 years old and only just realised that Tony Anthony’s name is essentially Anthony Anthony.....I guess TL Hopper wasn’t so bad after all <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

<p>Barry Windham and Dustin Rhodes vs. <strong>Rick Rude and Arn Anderson</strong></p><p>

<em>I see this going one of two ways....Barry loses his cool and somehow costs the Faces the match, or Arn/Flair somehow accidentally costs the heels, as his exit from the DA begins.....there's going to be a beat down of the Nature Boy happening somewhere too that Anderson isn't going to be happy about</em></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Blanco & Konnan</strong> vs. The Calgary Connection – non-title</p><p>

<em>I guess a win here would set up the future Title Match, The CC really shouldn't be losing to this pair though</em></p><p> </p><p>

The Thrillseekers vs. <strong>Nikita Koloff and Ron Simmons</strong></p><p>

<em>With Flair's focus on Rude and the World Title, the Thrillseekers are going to be missing that guidance over the next few weeks....I'd like to see them pick up a win here, and it would be a huge one, but I think Koloff is too over for that</em></p><p> </p><p>

World Championship Wrestling presents: Saturday Night

Saturday, Week 1, October 1992

Your commentators: Jim Ross and Paul E. Dangerously

Segment of the Night – Lockdown!

on556lI.jpg2ytkyaJ.jpg

After the bell the Connection stood over the defeated Mexican pairing, arms raised.

Dangerously:
True dominance, Ross.

Ross:
Sure, Paul, and maybe they can try it with the titles on the line.

Handed the belts, Pillman and Hart lifted them overhead, before clinking the faceplates together as though they were toasting one another.

Dangerously:
They won in their last title defence.

Ross:
Barry Windham lost the match – and his temper!

Dangerously:
Same difference.

Ross:
Not hardly.

Pillman and Hart looked set to leave the ring, but...

OEAyqMK.jpgyVAviz6.jpg

...Barry Windham marched out from the back, Dustin Rhodes following closely behind with an anxious expression on his face as he tried to keep pace with Windham’s determined stride. Rather than enter the ring, however, Windham stopped at the foot of the aisle, his face twisted into a snarl as he looked at the champions.

Windham
:
Now you, me, and everyone here knows that what happened at the Clash didn’t settle things between us. I beat you into a pulp but the referee decided that good old-fashioned Texas justice ain’t the done thing around here!

Windham
:
The fans cheered at the suggestion of ‘Texas justice’ – or, at least, the idea of Windham delivering it to the Calgary Connection.

Windham
:
And there’s not much stopping me from getting in that ring right now and doing it again!

The fans cheered this still more loudly. Windham glanced at Rhodes.

Windham
:
But I believe in making up for my mistakes, even if it costs me, and it’s sure as hell costing me not to get in there right now and get into it with you. But I owe Dustin, not just for that match, but for puling me back from the brink... So I’ve got a great idea for your two, since you seem so big on yourselves and how good you are-

Hart:
With good reason!

Windham
:
Shut up! Just shut up!

Windham climbed up on the ring apron, glaring at the duo.

Windham
:
You still have those titles because I screwed up!
I
cost my team that match,
I
threw away our chance at the gold,
I
had you beat... and then threw it away because the referee didn’t like the way I was treating you.

He entered the ring, Rhodes following close behind and keeping a close eye on the Connection as they looked ready to get in Windham’s face. Windham, for his part, looked ready to fight, but was restraining himself, pacing back and forth on the spot, his knuckles white as he gripped the microphone.

Windham
:
So here’s the deal; You give me a chance to redeem myself, you give us another match for those titles, because otherwise all anyone’s going to remember is me beating you unconscious... and that doesn’t fit with your story about how good you are, does it?

Pillman and Hart looked at one another, Windham’s words seemingly having struck a chord.

Dangerously:
Now, hang on a second...

Ventura
:
Wait one minute!

myJ9THe.jpg

Jesse Ventura walked down the aisle, stopping short of entering the ring as though wanting to avoid getting caught between the two sides.

Ventura
:
Before Dangerously gets up from the announcers’ table and tells his champions not to agree to the match, I’m going to make it official – at Halloween Havoc you four will go to the well for the World tag titles. And Windham, I know you want to dish out your ‘Texas justice’ and you can do that...
once
. But if you screw up again, you’re done. If you and Rhodes lose this match, you don’t get another shot at the tag titles so long as the Calgary Connection holds the belts!

Hart and Pillman looked pleased with this, Windham and Rhodes less so.

Ventura
:
But then, I don’t want to see the referee throw this one out again, either. So here’s what we’re going to do: At Halloween Havoc, the four of you will fight for the World tag titles... in a steel cage!

Ross:
Oh my!

Dangerously:
This is... this is... unacceptable!

Ross:
Sit down, Paul!

Dangerously:
Sit down? This is absolutely unthinkable, unbelievable, unconstitutional... I’m lost for words!

Ross:
Oh, thank God...

Windham looked delighted at the idea of being locked in a cage with the Connection. The Connection, perhaps remembering Windham’s words about his disappointment at missing out on War Games, seemed less pleased.

Ross:
It’s official! At Halloween Havoc it’s Windham and Rhodes against the Calgary Connection for the World tag titles – in a steel cage!

WCW Hotline Show Notes

VmQS5qo.jpg

After clashing with Blanco and Konnan last week, the Calgary Connection met with the Mexican duo on Saturday Night. Konnan and El Tigre Blanco put on a great show, and we suspect that they earned a lot of new fans (especially when Blanco seemed to fly halfway to the rafters with a diving splash), but the tag champs were just that little bit better – and part of that may be that Pillman had a handful of trunks as he rolled up Konnan...

The Dangerous Alliance seem to have closed ranks around Arn Anderson of late – with Rick Rude telling him backstage that he was just going through a bad phase, and that he was still the best wrestler in WCW, and Steve Austin getting in Bret Hart’s face over a perceived slight during the Hitman’s interview. Anderson and Rude put on an outstanding match in the main event with Barry Windham and Dustin Rhodes, but as is often the case in matches with the Dangerous Alliance it descended into chaos with the four men brawling in and around the ring without any attention to the official, leading to the match going to a double countout as the quartet continued regardless!

Austin, meanwhile, had his hands full with young Marcus Bagwell, out to avenge his mentor’s defeat for the Television title. Bagwell put on a typically spirited display, but couldn’t stop the fast-rising Superstar from retaining the gold with a Stun Gun, after which he celebrated with the gold in his hands, a cocky smile on his face and Madusa close at his side.

Dangerously:
What do you say, Ross? Are we looking at a future Hall of Famer, or what?

Ross:
Well Paul, I’ve seen a lot of great talent start hot – but it’s longevity that makes a Hall of Fame career. Like Ric Flair, for example!

Speaking of Flair, he was all set for an interview regarding his World title match against Rick Rude, but before he could even begin Scott Steiner interrupted proceedings to hog the mic, brag about putting Randy Savage down, and proclaim to all and sundry that ‘the Steiner Animal’ was soon going to stand atop the mountain, and even if someone like Flair got in his way, the Nature Boy would just be a placeholder before Steiner reached the top! Flair, for his part, seemed to take the bombast in stride – and promised he’d be back next week to finish what he didn’t even get the chance to start!

Marcus Bagwell’s mentor had a match of his own on Saturday Night, as Ricky Steamboat teamed with Michael Hayes to take on a pair of rising talents in Shawn Michaels and the Diamond Studd. Michaels has been struggling of late, and seemed out to prove a point here, but with the rivalries on all sides it wasn’t a match that was allowed to play out all the way as Vinnie Vegas and the Young Pistols all got involved, causing the match to be thrown out.

Vegas was back in the show’s main event, challenging Sting for the United States title in a real showcase for the big man’s strength and surprising speed – even when faced with an opponent as strong and fast as the Stinger! Vegas could have had the title around his waist – becoming a double champion again – when he hammered Sting into the top turnbuckle with a Snake Eyes, but Sting was able to get a foot on the bottom rope. Vegas’ frustration began to show as he couldn’t find a way to put Sting down, and even with Diamond Dallas Page’s guidance at ringside it seemed that the match was slipping away as Sting rallied. Still, a Vegas big boot had the champion down and Vegas ready to press his advantage – but Shawn Michaels sprinted to ringside and held up a roll of silver dollars for Vegas. Distracted, Vegas was too late to see Sting twisting on the mat, sweeping his legs out from under him and rolling him into the Scorpion Deathlock. Sting adroitly pulled Vegas
away
from the centre of the ring – far enough that Vegas’ long arms couldn’t reach the ropes, and with Sting sitting deep on the hold and no way to break it, Vegas could only admit defeat as Michaels looked mortified at ringside!

The veteran duo of Nikita Koloff and Ron Simmons taught the Thrillseekers a short, sharp lesson in power wrestling. The Thrillseekers could probably have done with some help from Ric Flair against the two massive bruisers, but with the Nature Boy revitalised he doesn’t seem to have been around so much...

Show rating: B+

OOC: A show booked under the effects of a concussion, so if it seems a little uninspired... The promo was written well beforehand, so hopefully works!
