Beat The Champ: Lance Storm vs. Masahiro Chono – WCW Television Title

Storm and Jericho have been quietly going along paying their dues, it's time that their patience (and new manager) paid off

First round: Ricky Steamboat vs. Arn Anderson

I'd love to see Rude and Steamboat going at it, but I also want that dissension damnit, and while Austin may be willing to let Rude carry on as champ, Arn won't be so willing

Quarter-final: Sting vs. Steve Williams

The Stinger keeps on keeping on

Quarter-final: Ric Flair vs. Shawn Michaels

Shawn might be the rough diamond, but Flair is as polished as polished can be.....and as the saying goes, diamonds are forever, and so is Ric Flair

Quarter-final: Chris Jericho vs. Steve Austin

I don't think Y92J is going to be defeating Steve Austin this evening, as the Thrillseekers go 1-1 on the night

Ron Simmons and Nikita Koloff vs. Clark Hainess and Jeff Farmer

Squashhhhhhh

Steve Austin marched down the aisle, United States title in his hand.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Dangerously: </strong></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">Yes, well, Steve is very much his own man – loyal to the Dangerous Alliance, of course, but he definitely has his own ideas.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Austin got into the ring and fixed Michaels and the rest of the Diamond Exchange with a glare for a long moment, before crossing to the far side and picking up a microphone. He turned back to Michaels and his expression was, if anything, more serious.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Austin</strong></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>: </strong></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">So, this is what you’re doing now, huh? You sure you want this, boy? You want war with the Dangerous Alliance? Because I thought you knew your place – and it’s behind us when the money and the title shots are getting handed out!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Austin: </strong></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">But you want this, then you got it, and the last time I checked there were three of you and five of us, and maybe you want to bring in DDP to back you up, but I’m willing to bet we can still whip you if it comes to it, and that’s without Madusa needing to get her hands dirty, ‘cause I don’t reckon your Diamond Doll is much of a fighter, am I right? So think about what I’ve got to say very carefully before you answer. Shawn, because the Dangerous Alliance doesn’t mess around, and if you want to go, then we’ll go, and I don’t think you’ll like the outcome. Now, are you sure you want to challenge me for this?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Austin held the United States title up, but didn’t look at the gold. Instead he stared unblinkingly at Michaels. The Rough Diamond, for his part, held up his hands placatingly.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Michaels: </strong></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">Now Steve, did you hear me, or big Vin, or the Studd, or Dallas, or Kimberly, say anything about ‘war’? I didn’t say anything about a war. I didn’t hear anyone else say that. I’m not after a war. Big V? Studd? Anyone? No?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

</div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><strong>Michaels: </strong></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">See, Steve, this isn’t an invitation to war – this is an invitation to make money! You and me, two of the best in the world, definitely the two best young wrestlers around, going at it for the United States title. Tell me that Ventura won’t open up the bank to make that match real. Tell me that people won’t tune in to see that. Tell me that it couldn’t headline pay-per-views – not just now, but for the next decade or more. Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin, gold on the line – both literally, and figuratively. You fought hard to get more money for defending the Television title, Steve, and given how big daddy here’s been picking up the tab for the last couple of weeks, we all thank you for that – but think about how much money there is to be made for a match between me and you, and tell me that you don’t want that. Go ahead, I’ll wait.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

You want this to be a business deal? Fine, we can do that. Get your buddy Dallas to call Paul E. and we’ll make this happen. And we can play nice for the cameras so Ventura can sell it in the adverts, sure.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

After their cage match defeat at Halloween Havoc, the Calgary Connection were medically barred even from attending WCW shows for two weeks, but now they’re back – and the Dangerous Alliance is whole once more! Arn Anderson showed real fire in his first round match against Ricky Steamboat, and on another night the Enforcer might have walked out with the duke, but here it was Steamboat who edged a very close contest, coming out on top with a quick roll-up that saw Anderson arguing with the referee – as Scott Steiner loomed over the victorious Steamboat as a reminder that he was waiting for him tomorrow night in their quarter-final match on Main Event!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ultimate Warrior didn’t look worried when he was surrounded by the Kingdom during the course of Saturday’s show – in fact, the Warrior could scarcely have looked less impressed! He dared Big Van Vader to face him one on one to prove that he could; The issue between them would never be settled until they met on the field of battle and one man or the other scored a decisive victory!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

With Vinnie Vegas vacating the Television title, a new champion was required – and it was an international battle as Lance Storm of Canada and Mashiro Chono of Japan clashed for the vacant belt. Chono was devastating in the early going with a series of suplexes, but missed an elbow drop that gave Storm the chance to rally. With Tammy cheering the stoic Thrillseeker on from ringside, Storm made the most of Chono’s error by working over his opponent’s back, and while Chono tried to slow Storm down, a single-leg Boston Crab that Storm calls the Canadian Maple Leaf was enough to force the submission, and give Storm the Television title!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Nikita Koloff and Ron Simmons polished off local competitors Clark Hainess and Jeff Farmer when Koloff crushed Farmer with a Bearhug. Afterwards, the duo announced that they had decided on a name for their nascent team – The Big Two! Hard to argue with that name! Koloff and Simmons reiterated that they were there to fight for the World tag team titles...</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

...which brought out the champions themselves, Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham! The champions said they respected how hard the Big Two had been fighting in their absence to earn a shot, and that they were more than willing to make their first title defence against them next week!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Steve Austin advanced to the quarter-finals of the tournament with victory over Chris Jericho, at least in part thanks to Madusa’s interference. Tammy seemed somewhat subdued at ringside with Madusa keeping a close eye on her, and couldn’t stop the veteran competitor from swaying the match in the Dangerous Alliance’s favour, making it one win and one loss a piece for the two sides in Saturday’s matches! Watching backstage, Rick Rude seemed to be deep in thought over Austin’s victory – possibly not helped by Randy Savage speculating that Austin looked as good a bet as anyone in the tournament to go all the way.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

And then it will be Alliance against Alliance at Starrcade, ooooh yeah! Too bad the Macho Man wasn’t cleared to compete in this little tournament, or I could have spared you the moral quandary of beating up on your buddy, right?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Sting faced off against “Dr Death” Steve Williams in their quarter-final match in a wild brawl that took in both the inside and outside of the ring, as well as Williams tackling Sting into the crowd barrier in a move that sent both men crashing over it and into the crowd! The WCW fans didn’t seem to mind this close up view of the two rivals, cheering both men on as they fought for a place in the semi-finals. Back in the ring, it was Sting who claimed the upper hand – just! Coming off the top rope with a leaf out of Ricky Steamboat’s book, he scored with a diving crossbody to put Williams down for just about three seconds to advance! Williams has certainly impressed during his matches in WCW – might we see this tough as nails competitor back again soon?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

In the night’s main event, Ric Flair faced the up-and-coming Shawn Michaels, who had a potential two title shots to think about. Michaels has been talked about as a potential next-generation Nature Boy, and certainly the young ladies in the crowds have taken to the Rough Diamond! The clash between present and future was intriguing, with Flair seemingly having an answer for every dirty trick Michaels and Diamond Dallas Page had to hand, but when Michaels deigned to wrestle Flair it seemed that </div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><em>he</em></div></div></div><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> had the edge as he was faster than Flair and seemed to have Flair’s best moves well scouted. But the Nature Boy is nothing if not resourceful, and when Michaels tried for a diving elbow from the top rope Flair moved at the last second, and with Michaels landing hard on one knee, Flair swooped to lock on the Figure Four Leglock to force the submission – and book a semi-final spot against Sting!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

<p><em>This show totally slipped under my radar, it was a great one too. World Championship Wrestling presents: Main Event

Sunday, Week 2, November 1992

Your commentators: Tony Schiavone, Eric Bischoff and Dusty Rhodes

Segment of the Night – Ricky Steamboat vs. Scott Steiner

osRcosk.jpgq8m9fFW.jpgRaIRMkk.jpg

Scott Steiner seems to be growing larger by the day, as the Animal loomed over the not-exactly-insubstantial Ricky Steamboat ahead of their match. The cagey veteran had to endure a beating in the early going of their match, but rallied with his greater speed giving him the edge as Steiner struggled to land telling hits. The bigger man tried to slow Steamboat down with a bearhug, but Steamboat pulled one arm free and elbowed Steiner repeatedly, before a fireman’s carry took Steiner to the mat. Steamboat worked over Steiner’s knees with a series of moves that left him limping noticeably, and lacking the leverage to deliver his trademark devastating power moves. With Steiner hobbled, Steamboat went to the top rope and leapt off with a Flying Crossbody, and Steiner was unable to kick out as the referee counted to three.

Schiavone:
Ricky Steamboat advances! The former World champion is one step closer to a second reign – and after Marcus Bagwell lost out to Steiner in the first round, the youngster couldn’t look more delighted!

Steiner watched in disgust from the corner as Steamboat celebrated his victory, joined by his protégé. As the pair turned to salute all four sides of the crowd, Steiner launched himself off the mat and turned Steamboat inside out with a
Steinerline
. Steiner
piefaced
Bagwell to the mat before hauling Steamboat upright and delivering a huge belly-to-belly
suplex
, hurling Steamboat up and over the top rope to the arena floor!

Schiavone:
Incredible! And what a horrible landing for Ricky Steamboat!

Steiner snatched a microphone and climbed out of the ring, standing over Steamboat as he was tended to.

Steiner:
Did that hurt, Dragon? It could have been worse – I could have got you during the match. Consider that payback for beating me. But I’m getting better every time, and next time you won’t win, Ricky...

Steiner paused, head cocked to one side as he looked at Marcus Bagwell, standing defiantly over his mentor.

Steiner:
What do you want, punk?

Bagwell:
I want another match with you!

Steiner laughed.

Steiner:
Yeah? Well, I’m not busy at the Clash now, so let’s do it there. You’re still young, Bagwell. Maybe there’s still time for you to learn a valuable lesson about crossing your betters – a lesson your daddy
oughta
have told you. And since he didn’t, I’ll make sure to beat it into you extra hard. No half measures, punk. I
ain’t
gotta
save nothing for the next round now, so I’m
gonna
beat you until you beg for mercy!

Rhodes
:
Marcus Bagwell may have bitten off more than he can chew! It’s hard to find fault with someone who wants to protect their friend, but young Marcus had no luck last week against the big, bad Steiner Animal. I think if Ricky knew what was going on, he’d be telling the boy to let bygones be bygones!

WCW Hotline Show Notes

thsMMXo.jpg

It was a big night for the Armstrong clan, with Brian and Scott challenging the Diamond Mine for the United States tag titles. The brothers came up short, but a spirited display meant that the champions knew they’d been in a fight! They also made sure to plug their buddy Shawn Michaels United States title shot against Steve Austin, which we’ll see live next Sunday on the Main Event!

Brad Armstrong was united with his regular partner Tim Horner and Pat Rose to take on the Six Man champions, the Young Pistols (featuring brother Steve!) and Michael Hayes! The brothers avoided too much fighting against one another, but there was plenty of fight to go around even so, with all six men battling at times. Ultimately, Tracy Smothers was unconstrained by brotherly feelings and delivered a Jaw Jacker to Brad to give his team the successful defence! Afterwards, the Lightning Express were seen having an intense discussion – might things have been different had Brad gone after his brother?

It was a big night as well for young Lance Storm, making his first defence of the Television title against local competitor Bobby Walker. Afterwards he was out to celebrate with Chris Jericho and Tammy, but the latter duo already had plans. We hope that Lance didn’t have to celebrate on his own!

OOC: Minor variation on the Shawn Michaels’ Predemption approach, as I meddled in the relationship between two of his friends, Chris Jericho and Steve Armstrong. Result: They now have a strong friendship. If I can get Brian Hildebrand to bond with them as well, that will make a tight-knit clique – throw in Cactus Jack, Sting, Lance Storm and maybe even Ricky Steamboat who all have pre-existing relationships with at least one of the group, and that really could be a backstage nucleus of calmness and goodness. Which I guess would make Michaels the negatively-charged electron, but I’m going to drop the analogy before it becomes too tortuous and I betray my lack of knowledge of physics...

Anyway, Dusty was up to his usual tricks, forging a friendship between Barry Windham and Cactus Jack. Given that both are positive backstage influences, that’s a surprisingly helpful move on the part of the Dream.

There we go, normalacy resumed :p

WCW Saturday Night

Beat The Champ: Lance Storm © vs. Al Snow – WCW Television Title

Poor Lance, already the third wheel.....at least he will have the Television Title to keep him warm at night

Semi-final: Sting vs. Ric Flair

I can see some DA shenanigans here, some kind of double count out/DQ that sees both men eliminated.....mainly because I want Flair to win, but I really don't want to see poor Sting lose another high profile match

Semi-final: Ricky Steamboat vs. Steve Austin

Austin to the finals.....but just how willing will he be to lay down for Rude should he lose his US Title to Michaels between now and the finals

Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham © vs. The Big Two – WCW World Tag Team Titles

Rhodes and Windham are about ready for their next big programme.....I hope it's not with the Big Two :p

The Young Pistols and Michael Hayes vs. The Calgary Connection and Arn Anderson – non-title

Get the CC back into winning ways

<p>WCW Saturday Night</p><p>

Beat The Champ: <strong>Lance Storm</strong> © vs. Al Snow – WCW Television Title</p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Wow look at how this bracket shapes up. Flair vs Sting and then potentially Flair vs long time rival Ricky Steamboat. Could it be Flair vs Steamboat one last time?</strong></p><p>

Semi-final: Sting vs. <strong>Ric Flair</strong></p><p><strong>

I say Ric finds a way to win </strong></p><p> </p><p>

Semi-final: <strong>Ricky Steamboat</strong> vs. Steve Austin</p><p>

<strong>Austin is on a major roll, but could there be some sort of “botched” finish that creates heat within the DA. I going with nostalgia here</strong></p><p> </p><p>

<strong>Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham</strong> © vs. The Big Two – WCW World Tag Team Titles</p><p>

<strong>The Young Pistols and Michael Hayes </strong>vs. The Calgary Connection and Arn Anderson</p><p>

<strong>I think trouble is still brewing in the Alliance with Double A</strong></p>

Ultimate Warrior appeared at the top of the aisle, a thoughtful expression on his face. Steamboat was clearly not at a hundred percent after the vicious assault by Scott Steiner last Sunday, and was largely fighting a defensive match. However, such is Steamboat’s skill level that he was able to hold Austin at bay for much of the match, gradually chipping away at the United States champion. Austin went after Steamboat’s back time and again, trying to break through his defences, but was continually frustrated – Steamboat even countering the Stun Gun into a backslide that nearly ended the match. Angered by the near defeat, Austin kicked Steamboat hard in the ribs, before delivering a suplex and gutwrench powerbomb, each move delivering more and more damage to Steamboat’s wounded back until the Dragon could barely stand. Austin dragged the final moments out, feinting forward twice before pulling back, forcing Steamboat to try and defend himself, only to cry out in pain when the second attempt saw him twisting his back too far.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Austin looked as though he was ready to argue the point, but settled for delivering a high elevation Stun Gun, dropping Steamboat across the top rope and snapping him backwards hard, further hurting his back. Austin covered without bothering to hook Steamboat’s legs, but such was the damage inflicted by Austin – and Steiner before him – that the three count came without incident.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Rick, you and me, we’ve driven up and down, east to west, all over this country, being the best of the Dangerous Alliance, and I’ll be damned if the best of the Dangerous Alliance aren’t the best in the world, and I know you agree with me. Brian and Owen, the best tag team in the world. You and me, the best singles wrestlers in the world.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Well, then the Alliance wins, no matter what. The money keeps coming in, and exactly who holds the big belt doesn’t matter, right?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The two former World champions tied up in the centre of the ring, with the crowd roaring both men on with equal fervour. Both “Owwww!” and “Woooo!” alike were met with rapturous cheers, and even Flair’s ventures into grey areas by the rulebook didn’t dampen the crowd’s support – indeed, even Sting seemed to realise that Flair is Flair, and that’s that. With the referee watching closely, but apparently instructed to give some leeway to the two competitors, Flair seemed to feel emboldened to test the elasticity of the law. However, that prompted Sting to fire back with an open-handed slap that knocked Flair on his rear end, after which the Nature Boy stuck closer to – if not wholly within – the letter of the law.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The duo went at one another scarcely without pause for more than twenty minutes. Sting focused on power moves, delivering suplexes and slams that seemed to set Flair up for the Scorpion Deathlock, while the Nature Boy worked over The crowd, already at a fever pitch after Steamboat and Austin’s contest, seemed to find new heights to reach as they clamoured for both men seemingly equally.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Flair zeroed in on Sting’s left knee several times during the match, and looked to have the match won with a pinpoint chopblock that left Sting writing on the mat in the centre of the ring. Flair paused to strut and “Whooo!” before grabbing Sting’s leg to apply the Figure Four Leglock, but before he could cinch it in, Sting grabbed Flair’s leg and with a mighty heave he toppled the Nature Boy to the mat. On one good leg, Sting pushed himself upright, Flair’s leg still in his grip, and quickly applied the grapevine as he turned Flair over into the Scorpion Deathlock. Although Flair was close to the ropes, they remained just out of reach – and Sting was seemingly anchored to the mat, not budging at all as Flair clawed at the mat and howled, stretching with his fingertips for the ropes, just inches out of reach as Sting leaned further and further back on the hold...</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Sting had slumped to the mat, exhausted, beside the Nature Boy. Outside of the tournament matches, the most heated contest of the night saw WCW World tag champions Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham making their first defence against the Big Two – Nikita Koloff and Ron Simmons. Koloff and Simmons have incredibly seemed to up their intensity even above their usual levels of late, and brought all that to this match as they launched themselves at the champions before the peeling of the bell had faded. The four men fought as though their friendships had never existed, and there was even some scattered booing from the fans when Simmons delivered a powerslam to Windham on the arena floor. But the titles couldn’t be won out there, and when Simmons dragged Windham into the ring, Rhodes caught him off guard, whipping Koloff into him and then rolling Simmons up for the pinfall! Afterwards, the champions offered Koloff and Simmons their hands as a sign of respect, but the challengers opted to walk away rather than shake, the crowd’s unwelcoming reaction seemingly lost on them as they were deep in conversation all the way up the aisle.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Ricky Steamboat wasn’t moving too well backstage after last week’s brutal assault by Scott Steiner, and Marcus Bagwell even suggested that he call off his semi-final match. Steamboat laughed off the suggestion, saying that he wasn’t passing up a shot at the World title. From the other side of the locker room, Bret Hart offered his opinion that Steiner was a dangerous opinion – and maybe Bagwell should worry more about his match at the Clash, than Steamboat’s match tonight.</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

While the titles weren’t on the line, the Dangerous Alliance trio of the Calgary Connection and Arn Anderson clearly wanted to prove a point against the Young Pistols and Michael Hayes. With the Connection having missed weeks after losing their tag titles, the young duo were in especially ruthless form, </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Newcomer Al Snow debuted in grand style, challenging for the Television title against new champion Lance Storm. Snow was seemingly hampered by injured ribs, judging by the tape around them, but put on a great show even so. <em>I could very well (and believe I may be) wrong here, and if Austin was to drop the title while still alive in the World Title tournament then it could make him even hungrier than he obviously already is....I don't know how far away Shawn is in terms of popularity though for Austin to put him over, because Steve has got to be mega over by now.....either way, should be a great match </em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>Likewise, Cactus must be way more over than Storm, but I don't see him as TV Champ, nor is he someone that even needs a title.....I'll go with crackerjack and say DQ when Cactus goes too far</em></p><p> </p><p>

</p></div><p></p><p>

</p><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">It was a busy Sunday night with a lot of implications for the upcoming Clash! Just for one, the Diamond Mine laid out a challenge to Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham, proclaiming themselves the number one contenders to the World tag titles! We hear from the office of the Commissioner that Jesse Ventura that the match has been made official – it will be champions versus champions this coming Thursday night!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

One man who booked his place at the Clash is Cactus Jack, although maybe not in the way some might have expected! After a hard-fought match with Lance Storm, the wildman emerged victorious with his first WCW gold in the form of the Television title – but only after Tammy accidentally tripped Storm when Cactus reversed an Irish whip into the ropes! One Double Arm DDT later, and we have a new champion! Storm was furious after the match, and Chris Jericho had to step into play peacemaker!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Terence Taylor was in fine form on Sunday night, first turning back the challenge of youngster Rey Mysterio Jr, and then laying out an open challenge for the Clash to any NWA competitor! Who will answer Taylor’s challenge? Can anyone afford to pay the asking price?</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

The Special Forces and the returning Long Riders showed real fighting spirit against their experienced opponents, the Malenkos and Lighting Express. With the size and strength of Brett Colt and Kip Winchester in particular proving decisive, the quartet came out on top, and the Long Riders took the opportunity to make a challenge of their own at the Clash – to the Stocks And Shares Express!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

It was a tag team heavy show this Sunday, with the One Percenters clashing with Blanco & Konnan in a definite clash of styles. Harley Race’s presence at ringside proved decisive, as his distraction allowed Don Harris to ambush El Tigre Blanco, and Blanco had no defence for the Double Chokeslam!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin met in the main event, with the United States title on the line. Austin may have wanted to keep his mind on the Clash and a potential World title opportunity, but Michaels made sure that he focused on the task at hand as he came close to winning early in the match. As Austin got his head in the game, however, the champion picked up the intensity level and brawled wildly with his challenger, dragging Michaels outside the ring to neutralise his aerial advantage. With Madusa assisting with a timely blow to Michaels’ knee with the cellphone, Austin was able to catch him with a Stun Gun, and that was enough to send him to the Clash with a huge momentum boost!</div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div></div></div><p></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;"><div style="margin-left:25px;">

<strong>Ultimate Warrior and ???</strong> vs. Big Van Vader and Rick Rude</p><p>

<em>So Warriors partner is either Sting or Austin right? Man I’d have picked Austin to win the lot, but how can you not be tempted to have a Blade Runners reunion? On that basis alone, Sting wins the tourney and he wins here too</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>See above</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>While I could see tha DM picking up the belts, Rhodes and Windham fought so long and so hard to get the titles it would be a shame to see them lose them relatively quickly</em></p><p> </p><p>

Marcus Bagwell vs. <strong>Scott Steiner</strong></p><p>

<em>Oh Marcus.....Marcus, Marcus, Marcus....you silly boy</em></p><p> </p><p>

<em>I’m really intrigued at where you go from here with Cactus....and also how long the Jericho/Tammy heel turn takes to come around</em></p>
