I thought I was predicting on my own diary for a minute there Yeah, Al's not winning this one though.....was that a Fifi sighting on Saturday Night?

You can tell the difference because no one's got Head in my diary

It is Fifi, who joined Madusa and Missy Hyatt in the early 1990s as providing a contrast to the likes of Cactus Jack, Johnny B. Badd, the Nasty Boys and Evad Sullivan.

Sadly here Fifi has no chemistry with Flair as his manager, and I don't have time for him to get get divorced three times and married twice so they can get their act together. She may stick around to manage Arn, though - it would be a nice contrast for him to be the one with the ravishing companion...

I thought that Awesome at least would attract more interest from folks. He's set for a tryout, so we'll see if he impresses - maybe not as a Horseman, but how about joining Warrior and Cactus... or, for that matter, the Kingdom?

New year, new generation? Time for the era of new stars to start making their names and a win for Studd over Bazza is a good start. Plus I still see Windham turning heel at some point so some frustrating losses would be a good starting point

Young Canadian Sean Morley fought Arn Anderson in the Enforcer’s first match since Starrcade, and it’s hard to imagine a more different opponent than Ric Flair – Morley is at the beginning of his career, young, strong and fast, while Flair is experienced and guileful, a skilled technician with a broad array of dirty tricks. Marcus Bagwell had noble intentions, but you know what they say about those. The youngster was repeatedly outsmarted by Hart and Pillman as he and Sting faced off against the Dangerous Alliance duo. Pillman has his own reasons to want to get one over on Sting, of course, and we wonder if Sting may have regretted his choice of partner here. As it was, he was left watching as Pillman caught Bagwell with a System Crash, which was enough to give the Connection the win – and Sting another reminder that it’s tough at the top! In the third match of the series between the Diamond Mine and Rhodes & Windham, the Diamond Studd and Barry Windham tore into one another with the score at one a piece, and both men trying to demolish the other. Windham had less to lose, with this being his second match in the series, and that may have led to a moment of recklessness from the Sweetwater native who missed a diving clothesline from the top rope, crashing hard and leaving himself open for a Diamond Death Drop to give Studd the win. (B+) Of course, wherever Studd goes, Vinnie Vegas is never far behind and once more the Diamond Mine found themselves involved in a brawl with Windham and Dustin Rhodes as the younger Texan charged to his partner’s assistance! World Championship Wrestling presents: Main Event

Sunday, Week 2 January 1993

Your commentators: Tony Schiavone, Eric Bischoff and Dusty Rhodes

No-one could beat Randy Savage, and now the Macho Man has his sights set on the United States title! That left the Television title up for grabs here, as the vibrant Konnan clashed with the experienced – and nowadays more sharply attired – Robert Eaton. While the Latin American star had Eaton on the ropes, he couldn’t put him down, and the wily veteran was able to claim the Television title with an Alabama Jam! (C+) We suspect that Alexandra York has an eye on a name change for the devastating legdrop, but it did the job here! Still, Eaton’s reign may be short, as his alliance with the York Foundation has apparently brought him to Sid Vicious’ attention...

Konnan’s allies had better luck in their match, with El Tigre Blanco and Rey Mysterio Jr defeating local talents AJ Petrucci and Dennis Allen (C-) before Bret Hart faced off with Dean Malenko, picking up a win over the technical wizard – now reported to be at 703 holds – with the Sharpshooter. (B-) Afterwards, the Hitman had a challenge for any member of the Dangerous Alliance who’d set foot in the ring with him.

Hart:

Austin, Rude, Pillman – I’m not hard to find! You’ll find me at the head of the line looking for new challenges every night!

His challenge was answered by none other than the former World champion himself!

Rude:

You’re not as strong as Sting, or as fast, but maybe I’ll let you show off your Sharpshooter so I can practise breaking out of the Scorpion Deathlock!

The Special Forces were the latest team to hand over their money to challenge for the NWA World tag team titles. They weren’t successful here, as Richard Morton and Robert Gibson showed that they’re fully willing to cheat to retain their gold, but the patriotic duo showed real fire as they took it to the former rockers, fighting hard and fair to nearly claim victory several times until Gibson rolled up Todd Champion with a handful of tights to keep their belts. (B-)

But that was hardly the last of the Express’ night, as barely had the bell rung than Sid Vicious charged the ring, sending Gibson and Richard Morton running for cover. Vicious chased them, his long legs eating up the distance, but the Express had clearly anticipated the attack as they led him into an ambush from their York Foundation colleagues Eaton and Terence Taylor! The Foundation might have been left standing tall over Vicious but for the arrival of Marcus Bagwell and Ricky Steamboat, who’ve had their issues with the Foundation in the past. Vicious, Bagwell and Steamboat managed to fight off the Foundation – for now! But Alexandra York seems to see money in this rivalry, judging by her expression as she called her team off!

Ric Flair’s latest Horsemen audition was against young Brit Steven Regal. The auditionee showed impressive technical skills, which has to have scored well with Flair, but his inexperience showed as he allowed Flair to catch him in the Figure Four for the win. (B) Afterwards, Flair shook his hand – has Regal done enough?

Before the main event, Dustin Rhodes and Barry Windham shrugged off suggestions that the match was a setup for an attack by the Diamond Mine.

So it proved, as a thrilling contest between Rhodes and Shawn Michaels was brought to a premature halt by the arrival of Vinnie Vegas and the Diamond Studd, who briefly made it three-on-one before Windham charged the ring, a pair of branding irons in his hand to even the odds as he and Rhodes stood their ground against the trio to close the show! I know I said it was time for Bret to start doing something, but damn he picked a poor place to start. Rude has to be super over after that dominating title reign, certainly more so than the Hitman who’s been spinning his wheels a little.....incidentally, after Owens run in the DA and CC, who’s the more over Hart?

It's actually Bret. There's not a huge amount in it - Bret is slightly more over in America (A's to B+'s) and Europe (B+ to B-) and significantly more over in the Maritimes, Quebec and Ontario, oddly, but otherwise there's very little in it. Bret has slightly higher Star Quality, which may be the main difference - he's also taken very few losses in WCW (5 in 47 matches - he's only lost to Flair, Rude, Anderson and Steiner in singles) while Owen's lost 21 of his 67 matches in about the same time, albeit that a lot of those were tags.

Ladies and gentlemen, it’s Saturday night and thank you for joining us for the best in wrestling action today!

After Robert Eaton defeated Konnan to become the Television champion last week, it was the turn of Konnan’s young ally Rey Mysterio Jr to step up to the plate and try to Beat The Champ. Mysterio is a veritable whirligig in the ring, seemingly spending more time airborne than he does on the mat, but Eaton has barely slowed a step since his days in the Midnight Express, and knows all about fighting quick opponents. Overpowering his smaller opponent, Eaton scored his first defence – and $5,000 for the York Foundation – with the Alabama Jam. (C+)

In an undisclosed location, Ultimate Warrior was training Cactus Jack. The duo made for an incongruous pair – Warrior, bare-chested even in the freezing cold, every muscle gleaming, Cactus, wearing denim and flannel and repeating Warrior’s mantras. Warrior towed Cactus’ pickup truck with ease, while Cactus struggled to get it moving... but when a gang of thugs stopped to laugh at the pair, Cactus tore into them with screaming ferocity, leaving Warrior looking thoughtfully after his protégé.

Warrior:

Truly, the invoking of explosions seems to endow strength and intensity on this berserker...

After their run-in with the York Foundation last Sunday, Sid Vicious and Marcus Bagwell teamed to take on the Stock And Shares Express here. The crowd favourites seemed on course for a victory that really would have to be considered an upset, given the Express’ experience working together, but that experience shone through as Richard Morton and Robert Gibson managed to distract the referee, allowing Alexandra York to trip Bagwell and hold his leg so Gibson could score the win. (B-) Afterwards, Eaton and Terence Taylor tried to join their allies in an ambush of Bagwell and Vicious, but Ricky Steamboat made the save.

Steamboat:

Taylor, I’ve not forgotten what you did before Starrcade! And as a former NWA World champion, I don’t think much of how you’re using the title either! Now, I’m not going to pay for the privilege of fighting you right now, but Commissioner Ventura’s agreed that the three of us can face three of you at the Clash – which means that big Sid definitely gets another chance at revenge for stealing the tag titles off him, Marcus gets more experience, and I get a chance at the winner’s share of the purse... which should be enough to pay for me to challenge you for the ten pounds of gold!

“Dr Death” Steve Williams was the latest person to challenge for a spot in the Horsemen, tackling Arn Anderson in a hard-hitting brawl. No question, the Horsemen could make use of a thundering bruiser like Williams, but perhaps he needs to learn a little subtlety – as the referee caught him going low on the Enforcer, drawing the DQ. (B-) Ric Flair joined his colleague in the ring to give their verdict.

Flair:

A Horseman needs to have full control – and getting caught ain’t that, Steve!

Eric Bischoff had convinced Steve Austin and Randy Savage to sit down to discuss their upcoming United States title match. Savage warned Austin that he was walking a lonely, dark path that didn’t guarantee him success, no matter what Paul E. Dangerously said.

Savage:

You’re good enough to do whatever you want, Austin. So do it!

Austin wasted no time in responding.

Austin

:

I am. I’m making money, holding gold, and building a base for when I’m on top of the mountain. The future is mine, I’m a Superstar already, and I’m going to become bigger than anyone’s ever been before – bigger than Flair, bigger than Sting, bigger than you, Macho Man, even bigger than your

Michaels:

Ah, ah, ah! Don’t go infringing on any copyrights, Steve.

Shawn Michaels strutted into the room and dropped into a chair, putting his boots up on the table. Ignoring the death glare he was receiving from Savage, Michaels kept speaking to Austin.

Michaels:

You’re

the future? That’s where you and I have to disagree. One Texan to another, I think you’ve been spending too much time in the sun – it’s going to be the Rough Diamond who sees WCW through the 1990s, and if that causes a little bit of heartbreak for you and anyone else, well, that’s too bad!

Dustin Rhodes clashed with Diamond Studd in the last of the four singles matches between the two teams. With both sides so familiar with each other, and the referee keeping his hed on a swivel throughout, there was no outside interference even if the antics of Barry Windham, Vinnie Vegas and Diamond Dallas Page were distracting enough! Rhodes overcame Studd’s weight advantage by keeping the match moving as fast as possible, making the most of an apparent edge in cardio to wear Studd down and take the win with a Bulldog.

That put both sides level at two wins a piece, which brought out a smiling Jesse Ventura.

It does me a lot of good to see you four beating one another from pillar to post week in, week out. The need to be the best, to stand alone on top of the mountain, that’s what this is all about! And only one team can do it – not two. So at the Clash this Thursday there will

be

a clash of the champions with the World

and

United States tag titles on the line, winner takes all!

With Rick Rude on commentary – displacing Tony Schiavone, who wasn’t about to argue the point with the former World champion, or the silent-but-glaring Madusa – Sting faced off against Owen Hart in a thrilling contest. The World champion focused on his opponent’s leg and back throughout, sending a message to Rude as he looked his way several times, including after delivering a Stinger Splash and locking in the Scorpion Deathlock. Hart fought valiantly to try and escape, and even seemed to be working up to a reversal as he rolled from side to side, but Sting’s vicelike grip on his legs just couldn’t be broken and eventually he had to submit! (A)

Rude was quick to grab a microphone as Austin and Brian Pillman came to ringside to tend to Hart – and settle in for the main event.

Rude:

You’ve only got a few days left, Sting. One fall, that’s all it takes, and you’ve

never

got that over me. You won’t on Thursday, either, and then the title will be back around the most perfect waist in the business – and you’ll be a two-time loser, squabbling over scraps while I dominate WCW again!

In the main event, Bret Hart seemed annoyed by the presence of the other Dangerous Alliance members at ringside, even yelling at Pillman at one point. It did him no favours, as Rude has never been the type to forgive even the slightest slip on the part of an opponent. Still, the Hitman fought hard, capitalising on a missed corner charge to take Rude down with a Russian legsweep and turn him over into the Sharpshooter. As Rude tried to reach the ropes, Madusa jumped up onto the ring apron to distract the referee. With the official’s attention elsewhere, Pillman slid into the ring and flattened Hart with a Shining Wizard, breaking the Sharpshooter. Recovering from the pain of the hold, Rude scraped Hart off the mat and dropped him with a Rude Awakening, which gave Rude the win heading into the World title rematch!

And you know that the Dangerous Alliance will be watching

World Championship Wrestling presents: Main Event

Fans, I hope you’re ready for a great night of action because we have five tremendous matches coming up tonight!

The show opened with a technical masterclass as luchador El Tigre Blanco challenged Robert Eaton for the Television title. Where Konnan’s strength and Rey Mysterio Jr’s speed had failed to beat the champ, Blanco came the closest yet, almost snatching victory with a slingshot senton to Eaton – but Alexandra York got her client’s foot on the ropes! As Blanco argued with the referee, Eaton blasted him in the kidneys before heading to the top rope to lower the boom for the narrow victory! (B-)

The WCW Special Forces had a warning for the York Foundation: Unchecked materialistic capitalism would be their downfall, and they should cleave closer to the wise words and good intentions of the founding fathers.

Patriot:

The circulation of confidence is better than the circulation of money – and if you ever dared to

truly

defend your titles, you might gain faith in yourselves!

Perhaps, but Terence Taylor and the Stocks and Shares Express gave a reasonable accounting of themselves in the ensuing six-man match – for them, a warm up for Clash of the Champions. They showed no lack of confidence in tackling their opponents, although Patriot may feel at least partly vindicated that Taylor stooped to holding Firebreaker Chip’s trunks to get the win! (B-)

Arn Anderson and Ric Flair were reviewing more tapes of potential Horsemen, while the lovely Fifi attended to their every need. With the Clash just a few days away, the Enforcer and the Nature Boy were discussing giving an opportunity to ‘a couple of kids from Tennessee’. Could these be the new Horsemen?

Local talents The Gambler and Tim Parker had the opportunity of a lifetime when they stepped up to challenge the Diamond Mine for the United States tag titles... but the towering champions made short work of their young opponents, brutalising them with hard strikes and high suplexes before Diamond Studd pinned Parker with the Diamond Death Drop.

DDP:

Windham and Rhodes, you just saw what you’ve got coming to you on Thursday. We like these kids, hey, Gambler here even taught Vinnie a new shuffle before we came out here. But the Diamond Mine still left ‘em lying – and now they’re all warmed up and ready to walk out of the Clash with

the gold!

So I want to take you back to the Dungeon and see if I can remind you of what the Hart family taught you back in Calgary!

For his part, Pillman wasted no time in responding to the demand.

Pillman:

I’ve been waiting for you, Hitman! Ever since Starrcade, I knew you’d want a piece of me, and that’s just great, because I want a piece of you too! Not just for me, Hitman, no – for the Dangerous Alliance! You spat in our faces when you turned us down... so just like you were a warm-up for Rick last night, you can be my warm-up for SuperBrawl on Thursday – and I’ll make you realise that saying ‘no’ to the Dangerous Alliance comes with repercussions. They say revenge is a dish best served cold, well, we like it

With partner Owen Hart at his side, Pillman then clashed with the Young Pistols, the two young tandems contesting their match at high speed, firing off moves from all angles, with each coming close to the win several times, but as the match wore on Pillman only seemed to grow stronger, eventually overpowering Tracy Smothers with a barrage of strikes, setting him up for Ice Cold In Alberta to give the Calgary Connection the win! (B-)

Pillman’s staking his claim! Maybe this boy’s ready to be the main man if Rick Rude doesn’t win the title back this Thursday night!

When I saw that Sean Morley had an incident with Arn Anderson, I was worried that Double A had picked up another protégé, and I’d gained another perennial jobber ... Happily for me Morley was up before wrestlers’ court for not shaking hands ... Ricky Steamboat update: Babyface for Steve Armstrong, Brian Armstrong and Marcus Bagwell. Not feeling too inspired tonight, Dragon? ... The Gambler! WCW’s premier underneath guy, and a gimmick that I adored to an unreasonable level back in the early-mid 90s; Mr Straight Flush is on a one night deal here when I realised I was short of ten minutes and needed a couple of schmoes for the Diamond Mine to squash, but you can expect the Riverboat Roughhouse to bring his deck of cards and bolero tie to WCW on a regular basis ... I wonder if the Special Forces need a cardsharp? ... The main event copped a lower rating due to my using the Spectacle aim. Nearly four years after the game released, and I’ve still never got it to work. It seems to need a cold/cool crowd so the wrestlers can build them up to a crescendo, which doesn’t suit my booking style, really...

Apropos nothing much, I had a news item about “Bulldog” Bob Brown pop up in my feed. He’s a wrestler and commentator in CNWA and WFWA and, at 54, I was curious how good his matches were. Well, it turns out he’s about as good as you’d expect a 54 year old to be, except when he’s opposite one or both of the Thrillseekers. Jericho and Storm are so over in Canada they’re carrying the indies there on their backs. Interestingly, Storm is the more over – and works for both WFWA and CNWA, as well as touring with NJPW. In this ‘verse, Jericho’s the one taking the slightly safer route.

Sting may well close the door on his feud with Rick Rude here, but with Pillman waiting in the background it would seem his feud with the Dangerous Alliance is far from over. Sting went through too much to win this title to drop it so easily, I don't know where Rude goes from here though.

Randy could easily win this one, but Savage seems to be more of a background player in a lot of ways. Saying that I could see this once continuing. A no finish or cheap win for Austin sends them to SuperBrawl for a gimmick match of some discription.

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Clash of the Champions! We’re going to have six titles on the line tonight, including the World and United States tag team champions facing off with both titles on the line!

Schiavone:

And Steve Austin defends his United States title against Randy Savage – with the Macho Man out to steer the Superstar away from the same dark path he walked once upon a time!

Dangerously:

And in the main event, “Ravishing” Rick Rude becomes the World champion once more by defeating Sting!

Schiavone:

But first, the York Foundation clash with Sid Vicious, Ricky Steamboat and Marcus Bagwell!

Sid Vicious, Ricky Steamboat and Marcus Bagwell vs. The York Foundation

A chaotic opening match saw Sid Vicious press each of the members of the Foundation overhead at various points to deliver huge slams. But the parallel interests of the Foundation meant that their teamwork was superior to their opponents’, who essentially were Steamboat and Bagwell... and Vicious working independently, showing little regard for his teammates. And when Robert Eaton put in an appearance and tripped Vicious as he ran the ropes, Vicious went after the Television champion, leaving Steamboat and Bagwell outnumbered, and as Steamboat fought off Robert Gibson and Richard Morton, Terence Taylor rolled up Bagwell and grabbed the ropes to keep the youngster down for three! (B-)

Enraged by the outcome of the match, Steamboat grabbed a microphone.

Steamboat:

Bobby Eaton! That title felt good around my waist in the past, and if you’re the only one I can get my hands on tonight, I’ll take it! If all you and the Foundation care about is money, I’ll take one of the ways you earn it!

Before the York Foundation could retreat, Commissioner Ventura appeared at the top of the ramp.

:

I like it! Spontaneous title matches, revenge, cold hard cash... What’s not to love? Referee, ring that bell!

Despite the protestations of Alexandra York, the match began immediately with Steamboat launching himself from the top rope onto the ramp, flattening Eaton. As Vicious chased the Stocks And Shares Express backstage, Bagwell tackled Taylor and the two brawled up the ramp, leaving Steamboat and Eaton to fight among themselves. Without much in the way of distractions – for York appeared not to have any data on her computer for a

singles

match against Steamboat – the two had an enthralling technical contest that ended when Steamboat went to the air once more, crashing down on Eaton with a Diving Crossbody for the win – and the title! (B)

Schiavone:

New champion! And Ricky Steamboat will

be fighting for the money!

Dangerously:

More fool him!

As Steamboat celebrated on his way back up the ramp, a video aired of Big Van Vader, working out in stark surroundings, the Kingdom goading him on to harder hits, bigger lifts, faster times... In the Spartan environment, Vader looked a little leaner and no less meaner as he worked over a heavy bag, eventually slashing at it with the edge of his hand and slicing through the canvas.

Vader:

No pain! No pain!

Ross:

Lord help anyone who stands in the way of Big Van Vader...

Commissioner Ventura was seen at ringside conferring with the referee as the teams made their entrances. Leaving the ring he approached Gary Michael Cappetta, who announced that the match was now a no DQ contest!

That’ll put an stop to this – these two teams have brutalised one another for the last two months, and it needs to end!

As a neutral in this affair, I’ve thoroughly enjoyed seeing them beat each other senseless.

If this is to be the last hurrah for these two teams, they left nothing in the locker room in a wild battle that saw al four men wielding weapons at various points – Windham and Rhodes favouring their branding irons, while Vegas used a chair to devastating effect and Studd whipped Rhodes with a length of camera cable. The fans were roaring their appreciation for the action, and steadfastly in the corner of the Texan duo, especially when Rhodes came off the top rope with a flying clothesline on Studd that seemed to have the match won. But it was the Diamond Mine’s manager Diamond Dallas Page who made the save, drilling Rhodes with a roll of silver quarters to break up the pin.

Schiavone:

No DQ rules work in the Diamond Mine’s favour here!

Windham levelled Page with a brutal lariat, but the distraction allowed Vegas to sneak up behind him and, as Windham turned around, crash a steel chair down on Windham’s skull to knock him clean out, the pinfall that followed a mere formality as the Diamond Mine claimed both tag titles! (A)

Dangerously:

What a match! And now see the balance of power in WCW shift to the Diamond Mine! Madusa, have a crate of the good stuff delivered to our good friends in congratulation!

Backstage, Patricia Martin was stood with the Ultimate Warrior and Cactus Jack, watching the Diamond Mine’s celebrations. Warrior – still sporting an eye patch – commented gravely that the Diamond Mine were without honour... and for true warriors, victory without honour was worthless!

Arn Anderson and Ric Flair vs. Brian Christopher and Jeff Jarrett

Christopher and Jarrett are talented young wrestlers with a family history in the business, and the pair seemed to win over the hearts of a number of young ladies in the audience during their audition to become Horsemen. In their inexperience, however, they gave too much to their veteran opponents, who are far too canny to pass up opportunities to win matches, and Anderson ultimately forced Christopher to submit to a Figure Four. (B)

Ross:

The kids had their moments, but are they what Anderson and Flair are looking for?

Backstage, Scott Steiner was seen laughing at the previous match. Eric Bischoff asked him if he was intending to audition for the Horsemen, but Steiner laughed even harder at the idea.

Steiner:

Bret Hart vs. Brian Pillman

Two graduates of the famed Hart Dungeon put on an exceptional match next, as the number one contender to the World title faced the man he eliminated last from BattleBowl to claim that honour. Hart has had his troubles with Pillman since that night, and seemed out to prove a point as delivered a series of thunderous strikes that had Pillman reeling. Pillman, for his part, is growing in confidence and skill seemingly by the hour and fought back with real venom, sending Hart crashing into the turnbuckles chest first. The battle was finely posed, and the fans once more roaring their support, when Pillman suddenly brought things to a crashing halt as he kicked Hart between the legs, drawing the disqualification as Hart dropped in pain to his knees. (A)

Dangerously:

If you’ll excuse me...

Paul E joined Pillman in the ring – as did Steve Austin and Owen Hart. Austin, Owen and Pillman lined up behind Dangerously as he stood over the downed Hitman.

Dangerously:

Did you think we’d forgotten? Did you think we’d let your slight pass? No – revenge is a dish best served cold, Hitman, and for you it’s going to be a diet that will freeze you to your very bones.

Crouching down he slapped Bret across the face, drawing boos and jeers from the crowd.

Dangerously:

This isn’t a business where you can survive on your own, Hitman. The lone hero, the quiet man, the man who stands on his principles... gets nothing! And we’ll prove that to you by breaking you physically and mentally and then...

He stepped back, and Pillman lunged forward with a Shining Wizard that snapped Bret’s head back, dropping him limply to the mat.

Dangerously:

...we take care of the rest of our business.

Dangerously, Pillman and Austin left the ring, leaving Owen in the ring with Bret. He stood over the Hitman for a moment, before following his teammates up the ramp.

Ross:

Bad times ahead for the Hitman – no-one can possibly stand alone against the Dangerous Alliance. Sting had half of WCW on his side and it took him a year to defeat Rick Rude!

WCW Six Man Titles

The Young Pistols and Michael Hayes © vs. Luchamerica

Trios action is part of the Mexican wrestling tradition, and Konnan, Rey Mysterio Jr and El Tigre Blanco showed themselves fully adept at the fast-paced action, focussing on the older Hayes and wearing him down, leaving him struggling to help his teammates. Over time, that told on the Pistols, and the guile and speed of Luchamerica proved decisive as Blanco went to air with a Frog Splash on Smothers to claim the win – and the Six Man titles! (B)

Schiavone:

A big win for Luchamerica, and I believe that makes Rey Mysterio WCW’s youngest ever champion!

Dangerously:

Keep working, kid, and one day you might get invited to join the Dangerous Alliance.

Ross:

I’m sure that he can’t wait, Paul.

Backstage, Flair and Anderson were celebrating their victory with French champagne served by their French maid, Fifi. Lance Storm, Chris Jericho and Tammy entered the locker room and Storm shared a little French with Fifi that had her giggling, before Jericho asked for an Horsemen audition for the Thrillseekers. Flair accepted, saying he knew how good they were – but asked if they felt they were

Horsemen

good? Both Jericho and Storm seemed confident, and Tammy too.

Tammy:

I know you have Fifi, but I’m sure I can add a little something to the package, and I know I can handle all

four

of you at once!

Dangerously:

I’d go for that!

WCW United States Title

Austin made a show of flaunting both his title, and Madusa, before the bell rang – making it clear that he didn’t agree with Savage’s assertion that he was on a bad path for his career. Savage shook his head with a rueful smile, and as soon as the bell rang he took the fight straight to the Superstar. Austin seemed surprised by Savage’s intensity and spent much of the match retreating and taking punishment, although he got some good shots in, including ramming Savage into the ringpost as they brawled outside the ring. Back between the ropes the pair continued trading shots, but Austin couldn’t put Savage away – the Macho Man even kicking out of the Stun Gun when Austin managed to hit it. Savage had Austin down and was looking for the Macho Elbow, but suddenly Shawn Michaels vaulted the guard rail and shoved him off the top turnbuckle to a heavy landing inside the ring. The referee missed the illegal interference, but was right on the spot to see Austin score his second Stun Gun as Savage struggled to recover – and that was enough to give Austin the win! (A)

As Austin celebrated, Michaels slid into the ring. Savage was trying to get to his feet, but Michaels swooped in with a savate kick to the jaw that dropped Savage to the mat again. Austin and Madusa left the ring quickly as Michaels posed over the Macho Man, before grabbing a microphone.

Michaels:

It’s not about you anymore, Randy – it’s my time now!

WCW World Title

Rude’s intensity over the last month has been borderline scary at times, but as Dangerously was quick to point out, every time he’d faced Sting in a singles match since winning the World title it was Rude who’d scored the first or only fall. Rude, then, looked confident as the bell rang. Furious, too, but confident.

Sting, for his part, radiated confidence of his own as he entered, the fans howling in unison with him as he perched on the ropes, the World title gleaming around his waist. And it was the champion who landed the first shot, tagging Rude with a right hand on the bell as he made it clear that Rude was definitely not going to have the match his own way.

Ross:

An aggressive start from the champion; Sting is no soft touch!

Neither man was able to establish a clear momentum advantage in the early going as they were just too similar in so many respects. Rude, perhaps, had the edge in power – but it was marginal at most. Sting was slightly faster, but Rude made it a goal to go after his surgically-repaired knee as often as possible, doing enough damage to slow the champion by a stutter step. Rude seemed ready to take advantage, but Sting rallied with a huge clothesline that sent Rude to the outside – and then the World champion launched himself over the top rope with a running dive that flattened Rude on the entrance ramp. Pressing the advantage, Sting delivered a running powerslam on the unforgiving surface, and then threw Rude through the ropes and back into the ring, pausing to howl for the crowd before climbing back into the ring.

Schiavone:

Dangerously:

Who cares?

Rude tried to rally with a flurry of punches to Sting’s gut, attempting to drive the wind out of the champion, but Sting fired back with a boot to Rude’s gut in turn, setting him up for a snap suplex. As the match continued, Sting seemed to have an answer for almost everything that Rude tried, although a Rude Awakening from nowhere might have given Rude the win – had he had the wherewithal to move Sting away from the ropes. But Sting got his foot on the bottom rope to break the count, and the match continued.

Ross:

Rude may have lost his cool! That could have been the match, but I think the challenger is rattled!

The moment seemed to break Rude’s spirit. From that point, it was almost all Sting, and minutes later Rude was crushed in the corner with a Stinger Splash, before Sting dropped him to the mat and wrapped him up in a Scorpion Deathlock. Rude howled in the centre of the ring, scratching and clawing at the mat, trying without success to pull himself towards the ropes... but it was futile, as Sting held Rude immobilised, leaning back and twisting Rude in a way his body was never meant to bend... until Rude submitted, and the crowd erupted! (A)

Ross:

Sting has done it! Rick Rude gave his all, and after nearly a year as champion he could have ended Sting’s reign at the first hurdle but...

Sting accepted the belt from the referee and hoisted it overhead, seemingly ready to go again as he drank in the crowd’s energy and delight.

Ross:

...the night, and the World title, belong to Sting! Good night, everybody, and we hope to see you all this Saturday night!

OOC: 65,000 fans in attendance for this show, topping real life peak WCW (Goldberg/Hogan in the 6th July 1998 Nitro at the Georgia Dome) by 23,000 ... More importantly, it topped Starrcade by 4,000 to become our biggest drawing show ever, which is a relief as it suggests Sting won’t be a letdown as champion the way he was in the second half of 1990. As someone who prefers booking heel champions, I’m always going to struggle when the belt is flipped, so I can sympathise with Ole Anderson and company ... 185 minutes for this show, a lot more digestible than Starrcade ... Konnan was cooking pancakes backstage before the show. I don’t know about Ric, but I

love

pancakes ... And yes, it really is that easy to get a Six Man title reign in my diary ... Or a TV title reign ... Easier, probably; Mr Hughes never made me pancakes, and he’s a two-time TV champ

Hey, remember when I had to rebook a show due to a scheduling glitch? A backstage incident that got lost was Ric passing on tips to his real life protégé El Tigre Blanco – but that got picked up here, as Flair shared some psychology tips. And if you’re going to learn ring psychology, you’re going to want to learn from Ric Flair ... Anyone else forget that Dusty Rhodes is Cactus Jack’s mentor? He shared some psychology hints too ... Do PPVs/events have a higher likelihood of backstage incidents? ... Ricky Steamboat had his usual stint as the learning tree, dropping babyface knowledge on Brian and Steve Armstong and Marcus Bagwell ... Chris Jericho and Steven Regal have struck up a strong friendship; Presumably that was based on swapping Robbie Brookside stories (red reels) ... Rude, Bret and Pillman got praise after the show; All put in outstanding performances

The tag title vs. tag title match was left up to the game to choose a winner, albeit with DDP booked to interfere. Whichever team won, I figured there’d be a good storyline coming out of it ... A’s for the Texans and A*s for the Diamonds in this match, even if Vinnie Vegas ‘seemed off his game’ ... The match moves straight in at #8 in our all-time best matches, Sting and Rude got #19, Hart and Pillman got #31, Savage and Austin for #41, so overall a very successful show – and it slots in at #3 all-time, behind a random episode of Saturday Night and Clash XXIV

“Ric Flair, I would have a moment of your time.”

Ric raised an eyebrow at the presence of the Ultimate Warrior by his Cadillac. Scarcely less eye-catching in real life than inside the ring, Warrior was several inches taller than Ric, and outweighed him by forty pounds of pure muscle. He smiled down at Ric from behind a pair of aviators, his long hair pulled back into a loose ponytail, his muscles bulging against the fabric of his clothes.

I’m used to being around big guys, but Hellwig, Warrior, whatever this guy calls himself... He’s something else.

“What can I do for you, my man?”

“I wished to thank you. This last year has been a challenge, and I have never turned away from a challenge,” Warrior began. “Be the road never so rocky, nor the mountain so steep, I endure, and in time I conquer!”

Warrior drove his clenched fist into his palm with a heavy smack that echoed through the parking garage, drawing looks from passers-by.

“Big Van Vader... Never before have I faced an opponent so strong, so fierce, so heavy and yet so agile. In truth, I am not certain, not completely certain, that I would have been triumphant when we faced at Starrcade. His own strengths, coupled with the devious nature of his Kingdom allies... Even the Ultimate Warrior is one man, albeit one endowed with the gifts of the warrior gods!”

Ric nodded without saying anything.

“But my new ally... Cactus Jack would be an easy man to look past, I feel. His grasp of personal hygiene is... questionable, at times. His fighting style is untamed aggression, and that causes him troubles, injuries that a cooler head might avoid.”

Warrior shook his head.

“But his journey parallels my own in so many ways. Anyone who fights as he does can, I believe, discover within themselves the heart of a warrior. I will be pleased to teach him, to guide him, to help him on his journey towards being a warrior!”

He clapped Ric on his shoulder, making his knees buckle slightly, before walking off.

“The answer’s no.”

Ric turned around to find Cactus Jack grinning at him with what remained of his teeth.

“Sorry?” Ric asked.

“No, he never switches it off. Look, I’ve been here eighteen months and working as a face, in a tag team, it’s a nice change of pace... but travelling with Warrior? Seeing him be...

the Ultimate Warrior

24/7? I’ve been doing this long enough that I’ve been around some strange characters, Ric, but I have to know... does he really believe he’s the Ultimate Warrior?”

“Honestly, I have no idea. Either he’s completely committed, or he probably should be.”

“Hah, yeah,” Cactus laughed. “Still... I like switching off when I get away from the arena, you know? And if I’ve told him my name’s really Mick once, I’ve told him a dozen times...”

He shook his head and walked off to his car, where Warrior had taken up position in the passenger seat, awaiting his... student.

Ric sighed. Another day, another challenge.

Great Clash, I’m curious to see where the Savage/Austin/Michaels (Tyson? No wait, he’s in jail about now ) dynamic goes.....that and what happens with Bret Hart now.....speaking of The Hitman.....

World Championship Wrestling presents: Saturday Night

Saturday, Week 4 January 1993

Ricky Steamboat clashed with the Kingdom’s enforcer – again, the

Kingdom’s

enforcer – Mr Hughes, defending his newly-won Television title. While Hughes had the power advantage, and the cunning of Harley Race in his corner, Steamboat showed absolute laser focus here, shrugging off blows that might have felled a lesser man before going to the top rope with a Diving Crossbody to seal the win. (C+)

Schiavone:

And that’s $5,000 in the bank for Ricky Steamboat. How much do you think Terence Taylor charges to put the NWA World title on the line?

Backstage, the Diamond Exchange locker room was almost overflowing with champagne, beer and gladhanders, but right in the middle of it all were the dual tag champions, Vinnie Vegas cracking jokes while Diamond Studd sat with a title belt around his waist, one around his neck and a beautiful woman under each arm. As DDP and Kimberly served drinks, Shawn Michaels grabbed the camera and pulled it over to himself.

Michaels:

Big party – but we’re just getting started!

Steve Austin and Dustin Rhodes have a long history together – even if they’ve only been wrestling for a few years. The United States champion and former World tag team champion threw down in a wild brawl, with the newly titleless Natural out to make a case for a title shot – but the arrival of Shawn Michaels spoilt that, sliding into the ring and blasting Austin with a savate kick to cause a disqualification. (A) As Rhodes looked on in frustration, Michaels stood over the fallen champion, mocking him as he struggled to get to his feet.

The York Foundation were backstage, Alexandra York leafing through the latest stock prices as Gibson, Morton and Eaton admired the group’s title belts. Taylor pointed to his NWA World title belt as he looked at the camera.

Taylor

:

Big money, guaranteed – and as long as I have the gold, it’ll keep rolling in. The shame for Sid Vicious is that he’s

not

going to get a shot. No farmboy from Arkansas is going to find the money to come after my gold,

or

the Express’ titles. And if you try, well... maybe I’ll have to buy the family farm and foreclose, just like back in the Great Depression when Alexandra’s family made their names by coming up smelling like roses!

The Thrillseekers were the latest team to challenge the Horsemen in an effort to earn a spot – or spots – in the legendary stable. Lance Storm and Chris Jericho were full of fire and moved as quickly as anyone in the company as they tried to take down Ric Flair and Arn Anderson, but the veteran duo dug deep and fought a fine defensive battle, eventually capitalising on a mistake by Jericho that allowed Anderson to land his famed Spinebuster for the win. (B-)

Schiavone:

They pushed hard, and that must have impressed – but will it be enough?

Randy Savage was – as ever – in a heated mood as Eric Bischoff caught up with him backstage.

Savage:

I want Shawn Michaels! Looks like Austin has to wait, but I’ll take the Rough Diamond right now, tomorrow, or whenever Commissioner Body wants to do his job and-

Savage was interrupted by Dustin Rhodes, the young Texan seemingly in just as heated a mood as the veteran.

Rhodes

:

You want Michaels!?! Get in line! He cost me tonight, and I’ll do whatever it takes to wipe that smile off his face! And as I can’t get my hands on the Diamond Mine, anymore, that just gives me even more incentive to knock their buddy around!

Sting was looking for a tag partner for later in the night. His first port of call was Bret Hart, and the Hitman was clearly interested in getting his hands on Brian Pillman again... but demurred at the prospect of facing the Calgary Connection. Sting was disappointed, and then surprised when he was approached by the Ultimate Warrior.

Warrior:

Although our destinies are forever entwined on the field of battle, tonight I cannot risk my own impairment slowing you when so much is at stake. You are the World champion, and you deserve an army befitting of your status as our premier warrior. And that is why I recommend to you this one, this destroyer, Cactus Jack!

Surprise, indeed, barely covers Sting’s response to the idea of siding with his former rival... but faced with the Calgary Connection, he was quick to accept the offer of help!

The Young Pistols, freshly shorn of their Six Man titles, looked determined to resume their long-time rivalry with the Diamond Mine with even more gold at stake. First they had to defeat the Malenkos, and this they managed when Tracy Smothers caught Dean with a fast rollup for the pin. (B) But that only won the Pistols the battle – the war continued as Joe Malenko hurried to his brother’s aid with a steel chair, catching both Pistols across the back with it and leaving them down as the Malenkos stood tall!

It wasn’t a great night for Michael Hayes, either. With no more Six Man gold around his waist, Hayes re-entered the singles ranks against the former World champion, Rick Rude. Rude is clearly out to prove himself once more, and Hayes bore the brunt of the Ravishing One’s bad mood, en route to tasting defeat with a Rude Awakening. (B) Before Rude could leave the ring, however, he was confronted by Bret Hart, who demanded a match with Rude at SuperBrawl.

Hart:

You want your revenge on me for turning down the Dangerous Alliance? I’m not going to wait for you to come after me again – I’m coming for the head of the Alliance, and ending this in one fell swoop!

Sting and Cactus Jack were never going to match Brian Pillman and Owen Hart for pure teamwork, but the savagery of Cactus and the strength of Sting kept them in the fight, and even seemed to give them something of an edge, insofar as it was possible to tell at the pace with which the foursome went at it. The fans were cheering wildly as Cactus launched himself off the ring apron with a somersault splash onto Pillman, before Hart leapt off the second rope to splash Cactus. As Hart celebrated his stunning dive, Sting levelled him with a baseball slide, leaving all four men fighting outside the ring – which was when Pillman stopped Sting cold by shattering Paul E. Dangerously’s cellphone on the back of his head, taking the DQ loss but leaving the World champion down! (A) Warrior joined Cactus in trying to fight off the Connection, but as he pressed Owen overhead Pillman clipped his knee from behind, and with Sting down Saturday Night went off the air with Warrior, Cactus, Hart and Pillman still slugging it out.

Ross:

Folks, we’re out of time! Be sure to stay with WCW as we head towards SuperBrawl III!

Robert Eaton made the backstage area better just by being Robert Eaton ... What a guy! ... Vinnie Vegas was brought up in front of wrestler’s court, charged with making a mess and not cleaning it up. In the absence of CM Punk, Judge Anderson ordered him to pay for everyone’s drinks, and Vegas was seen picking up some of his litter afterwards ... Lance Storm joins Chris Jericho in having a strong friendship with Owen Hart; As both Thrillseekers are now close to Shawn Michaels, I’m hoping that will be a useful vector in Operation Predemption ... Sting and Cactus Jack have no chemistry as teammates, which is sad but not especially meaningful; Cactus really was only in the spot as Warrior’s still injured
