Skills Explanation

Recommended Posts

I tried looking for this information, but can't find it anywhere.

I'm new to MMA in general, but the game is awesome. However, the number of skills and stats for fighters is overwhelming and while a few of them are explained, the majority are not.

A question to those who makes new fighters (and possibly to Adam Ryland) - is there a reference guide to those skills and what each of them means?

For example:

1. How is consistency depicted in the game and what happens if I change this stat?

2. Does sexuality influence anything or it's there just for flavor?

3. What does personality mean and how it's reflected in game?

4. How comfort in ring or dedication or experience affect the fighter?

5. Background attributes show the upper limit of fighter's skills. So which skills exactly? For example, I add High Level Sambo - what impact will it exactly have on the fighter? What skills will be affected?

These are far from being all my questions, just an example. So an in-depth guide to fighter creation would be welcome.

Thank you.

There is indeed little information for people that are not completely familiar with the sport. I'll try answering your questions but I'm not all-knowing and only know these things from experience so I'm not 100% sure. If you have more: just ask. Sometimes Adam answers them himself.

1. Consistency is made to determine that - on fight day - the fighter will perform to the best of his abilities. It's there to simulate off days (some people will have it more frequent due to, well, lack of 'consistency' in training for instance...). If he 'rolls' bad before the fight, his skills will get a penalty overall.

2. Just cosmetic. But like I posted yesterday, if two homosexuals end up divorced and have to fight somehow, they won't offer the gloves. <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> It also results in different relationships, obviously, like 'dating' and 'married'.

3. It has an effect on the behavior of the fighter outside of the mat. He will verbally insult opponents, which causes more negative relationships to spawn than normal. They might also get into trouble legally and might miss fights because of it.

4. Not being completely comfortable will lower their skills somewhat, I think.

5. HL sambo should increase their clinch grappling quicker, and perhaps ground skills. They have nothing to do with upper limits of skills. Skills will just increase quicker because of their experience.

Ok, can I just have a post for each attribute category and have an explanation for it as I understand it. And those of you who know how it all functions will comment on those that you think are wrong. I will bold out those that I am not sure about or don't know what they mean.

So let's start with General:

1. Reach - probability of hitting someone (punch and kick?) without getting hit in return if the opponent has lower reach.

2. Cut immunity - the higher the stat, the lower is the probability of getting a cut from an elbow strike.

3. Conditioning - ? not sure about this one

4. Strength - I think this should reflect overall strength of a fighter, but then there are other stats like punch/kick strength, etc.. so what does this one do?

5. Mobility - how easily the fighter moves around the ring... so does this impact sprawl/dodge chance?

6. Flexibility - is it flexibility as in ability to easily switch between fighting styles and situations or as in ability to resist submissions? And if it's the former, then how exactly it is reflected?

7. Reflexes - fighter's reaction speed (so dodge and sprawl again? And if so, what about the sprawl stat of a fighter?)

8. Chin Strength - ability to withstand hits to the head without getting knocked out.

9. Resilience - how injury resistant the fighter is.

10. Stun recovery - if a fighter receives a stunning hit, how likely and how fast he will recover and continue to fight.

11. Recovery - how long does it take a fighter to recover after a fight

12. Consistency - how likely is the fighter to perform to the best of his abilities on a fight day.

13. Weight cutting - how much worse will the fighter fight if moved to a lower weight class than normal.

14. Dedication - how much does the fighter benefit from training.

15. Potential - describes how high is the fighter's 'ceiling' for the skills.

3 - Having a higher gas tank aka lasting longer before being exhausted

4 - Doesn't do much. It has an effect on wrestling interactions (and takedowns?) if the fighter doesn't have the necessary skills.

5 - I don't think so. It probably impacts closing the distance or evasion of clinch attempts. There's separate stats for dodging.

6 - Against submissions: less likely to tap.

7 - I think it has more impact on striking exchanges. Maybe there's a relation with takedown speed?

11 - This is recovery after efforts during fights only. What you describe is "recuperation".

13 - It's his ability to actually make the weight limits of a lower weight.

I think you got the rest right.

ok, I like where this is going, more clarity now.

Now for Standing:

1. Footwork - not very clear. Is it something akin to mobility? Actually in the game I've never seen problems with one fighter approaching another for stiking exchange.

2. Feints - sounds intriguing, but I don't remember seeing something like that in game (say, pretending to hit with one hand and hitting with another?). So what does it do?

3. Head movement - how difficult it is to hit the fighter to the head.

4. Punch/kick power - the force with which a fighter's punch/kick lands.

5. Punch/kick technique - not clear. Does it influence whether it will be a strong or not very strong strike?

6. Punch/kick speed - hit chance with a strike (compared with opponent's reflexes?).

7. Creative kicks/punches - not clear again. How does this help and how it is reflected during the fight?

8. Guard/kick defence - ability to block punches/kicks.

9. Wrestling ability - how good is the fighter in stand-up wrestling (on the ropes?). There is a grappling ability which is separate, so not very clear here.

10. Muay Thai Clinch - how good is the fighter with initiating a Muay Thai clinch.

11. Takedowns - how good is a fighter with taking down an opponent (there is a skill with the same name in Wrestling section, so what is the difference?)

12. Takedown set up - how good is the fighter with creating a situation where he can take down an opponent? Like quick approach and such?

13. Takedown speed - how much (or rather little) time the opponent has to resist the takedown. Is this cumulative with takedown skill as a whole?

14. Takedown defence - how good is the fighter in resisting takedowns

15. Sprawl - how good is the fighter in evading takedown attempts

You have technique and power. The former has an effect on the likeliness to hit in a clean manner (or hit at all for that matter). Power is what you think it is.

1. All three evasion skills (head movement, footwork, feints) have an impact on the evasion of strikes

3. Keep in mind that these are defensive skills, not offensive.

9. The same as the muay thay clinch one: how good he is to close the distance

11. The 'wrestling' section is for in the clinch. Think judo throws.

12. I think it's more to disguise it so the sprawl/evade is less likely.

Ok, now I'm confused. Just looked at the in-game explanations and it seems "Recovery" is not what I thought it was. It says "healing after a fight". Is it in-between rounds? I can't imagine anything else as a function. It's not that limbs can magically heal. <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> What's the difference with "recuperation" than Adam?

I could've sworn that at WMMA3 it was healing during a fight.
