After a nearly twenty minute ordeal that could have gone either way, Benoit cheated when he rammed Jericho's head into an exposed turnbuckle before locking in the Crossface to steal the win. (B-)

Backstage in Stephanie’s office, William Regal responded to the summons of the “Billion Dollar Princess.” Stephanie confided in Regal that she had need of him tonight, explaining that Debra put her in a bind by allowing Austin a place in the tournament. She granted Regal a matchup with Austin tonight for a place in the tournament and confided that she had a plan in place to insure his victory. Regal, ever smug, happily agreed to Stephanie's offer. (B+)

After Regal left, Stephanie used the speaker phone in her office to call Vince. Trish Stratus answered the phone on Vince’s behalf leaving Stephanie equal parts infuriated and shocked as she simply hung the phone up. (B-)

Despite the distraction from Dean Malenko attempting to profess his love for her, Lita was able to pull out a win over Tori as the program focused back on in-ring action. (D+)

Tonight's Royal Rumble Rewind featured Chyna being the first woman to ever enter a Rumble match in the 1999 edition of the January spectacular. (C-)

The program next cut to the parking lot area where Stone Cold was arriving at the arena in his pickup truck. As Austin was getting his gear bag out of the cab, Kane and Rikishi ambushed the "Bionic Redneck!" Stephanie’s two brutes punctuated the attack with Kane choke slamming Austin onto the hood of his truck! (B+)

K-Kwik wanted to GET ROWDY as he made his entrance. ©

While Albert had the match firmly in his control, Test made an appearance at ringside. The big bald man quickly lost interest in battling with K-Kwik and was counted out as he looked to fight with Test on the outside. (D+)

Test and Albert continued to trade blows as a security swarmed to the scene to separate the former tag team partners. (C+)

Backstage Dean Malenko was scene attempting to sneak into Lita’s locker room where it appeared she was showering. Matt Hardy was a step ahead however and tackled the creep! Hardy left Malenko lying on the floor as Lita screamed in nothing more than a towel. Matt ushered Lita away from the scene, warning Malenko to stay away from her. Malenko licked his bloodied lip and smiled as the segment closed. ©

Elsehwere backstage, Steve Austin refused medical treatment and said he intended to face William Regal tonight was going on to kick Kurt Angle's ass! (B+)

“The One” Billy Gunn was once again tried to get revenge on behalf of his friend Chyna as he did battle with Val Venis. Despite the distractions from the other members of The Right to Censor, Billy seemed have this one well hand-- taking down Venis with a fame-asser. As Gunn went for the cover, The RTC hit the ring and put the boots him and ending the bout in a DQ. ©

Post Match:The RTC continued the assault on Billy Gunn and Steven Richards preached that Gunn, like Chyna before him, are paying for the disrespect and juvenile attitudes that DX displayed for years in the WWF. Who knows how many youths they corrupted? (C-)

Edge and Christian came out next to discuss their on-going rivalry with the Dudleyz. E&C reveal that they’ve been studying up on the Dudley clan and were trying to get a better understanding of the family tree. They state their research brought them to one of the Dudley’s extended family members: Uncle Cletus Dudley, who they brought out next. On cue, Kurt Angle, made to be dressed up as a Dudley, came out. Angle, posing as a moronic doof said disparaging things about Bubba Ray and D-Von as Edge and Christian laughed. (B-)

The Rock came out next and began a promo discussing Stephanie McMahon-Helmsely and promising to win the tournament and lay the smack down on Kurt Angle to once again be the WWF World Champion. “The American Bad Ass,” The Undertaker, came out to retort. Taker warned The Rock that the WWF ring is his yard and The Rock needed to pass by him before he was facing Angle or anyone else. (A)

William Regal and “Stone Cold” Steve Austin were out next for the last opening in the World Title contender tournament. Austin sold his injuries from Kane and Rikishi’s attack earlier in the night. That said, the "Texas Rattlesnake" competed his heart out against Regal in a wild brawl and was able to pull out the win, dropping the Englishman with a Stunner. (B-)

Show Rating: B (Popularity increased in 8 regions)

10.47 TV Rating

That said, I am of the mind that even though it's a creative game intended to depart from real-life, I need to feel that my events/storys/etc. make sense and feel authentic to the time period.

-I'm having a lot of fun with Royal Rumble Rewind. It's fun a little nod to nostalgia and I love the guesses that readers have offered up. That said, can anyone offer some insight on how I might book one without using guys on my roster? For instance, if I wanted to show Luger/Bret tying in '94, but neither work for me, what do I rate the angle on? Ross and Lawler? Just curious how other people might book something like that.

-Glad to see so many people on board with RTC. I'd like to think I can get some steam behind them. They're fun heels.

-When I first launched this game I was expecting to be amazed with a robust and deep roster. I'm very quickly realizing that with 2 A shows (something I almost never play using), the roster gets expended pretty quickly and I'm often challenged finding appropriate matches that: get people over, further angles, and preserve marquee matchups for bigger events. That said, I have no intention of going on a signing spree at the moment (although you can expect a few choice cameos/appearances for the Rumble), but it's been a fun game of chess finding a niche for everyone.

-Lastly, thanks everyone for reading/commenting and predicting.
Heat: Personally I kinda like booking Heat. But then, I'm a sucker for B-shows when I don't have to care too much about show ratings <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Rumble Rewind: Maybe don't book those but write them into the show? There won't be a rating for it, but if you're going for that general feel it'll do the trick.

Roster: I was surprised at that as well, but perhaps it's because I was thinking about later into 2001 after they'd gotten WCW and brought in some of the ECW guys? The upper midcard is still pretty stacked with Jericho, the Radicalz, Regal, and guys like Val and Godfather who can easily go with almost anyone. But yeah, within the next six months is when the shows started filling up with guys like Lance Storm, Rhyno, Tajiri, RVD, and some singles pushes for E&C and (sorta) for the Hardyz. The real sting - especially for guys like us who are more used to the 80s/90s style - is that except on shows like Heat or Jakked, they weren't really doing the "local jobber" bit anymore. So it's a little more awkward trying to get people who can just drop matches when you're almost exclusively using people already on your roster. I guess to that end... K-Kwik makes a fun JTTS? <img alt=":p" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/tongue.png.ceb643b2956793497cef30b0e944be28.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

Eddy & Saturn - Malenko causes a distraction with Lita that gives the Radicalz a win.

Hardcore Holly - Holly wins the belt here, but Raven takes it back later in the evening to end the show as champion again. This is still Raven's first title reign, gotta get started on bumping those numbers up to his real life 27!

William Regal - I know that IRL, Test won the belt here to give Regal a few weeks to heal up. But in the game, he doesn't need to heal anything, so he may as well keep the title a little more while Test deals with Albert.

Dudley Boyz - As much as we all enjoy RTC, the Dudleyz should be all set for a title shot at the Rumble, so they keep up momentum.

Kane

The Rock - Rikishi puts Rock through this match, both to screw with Taker and to do it for da Rock.

Moment: I'm sticking with Shawn's one footed landing and victory in 95, because it's gotta show up soon.

INDEED.

WWF Monday Night RAW

January Week 2 2001

Prediction Card

*Faces always listed first

The Hardy Boyz w/ Lita vs. Eddie Guerrero & Perry Saturn w/Terri

It won't be clean by any stretch of the imagination, but the Radicals are too good to be losing back to back matches

Hardcore Championship: Hardcore Holly vs. Raven©

I don't imagine anyone holding the Title for a prolonged period of time....that's the only reason I would bet against Raven

European Championship: Test vs. William Regal©

Test would be a decent European Champ.....it's not happening tonight however, he has unfinished business with Albert to attend to first

The Dudley Boyz vs. The Right to Censor (The Goodfather & Bull Buchanan)

Scotty Too Hotty vs. Kane

Scotty can beat Batista in the dark match of Smackdown....can he beat Kane on Raw? No.....no he can't

Semi Finals World Title Contender's Tournament: The Rock vs. The Undertaker

This is a tough call, but in the battle of the "The's" I think THE Rock will beat THE Undertaker.....but certainly not without shenanigans

What historical moment will make the Royal Rumble Rewind?

Something to do with Jake unleashing his Snake.....eliminating Andre maybe?

Plus...even more angles and a dark match featuring TAKA Michinoku! INDEED!

On the subject of B shows, I find them both a curse and a blessing.....a blessing because Superstars is the only reason say a Tatanka or a Bob Holly has any kind of TV time.....and it helps to keep people's momentum out of the toilet.....the curse is I just find them dull to book.

Although as for booking two A shows, I would burn through original matches so quickly if I had to book two shows a week. It's a good idea in principle, but the actual concept is a different matter.

She then explained that since Steve Austin refused medical attention on SmackDown! last week, it’s her job to protect him from himself. Austin will not compete against Chris Benoit on SmackDown! since he has not been cleared so the winner of Rock and Undertaker will face Chris Benoit for the right to face Kurt Angle at the Royal Rumble. (A)
This pronouncement by Stephanie brought the "Bionic Redneck" himself out to the ring. Austin ran down Stephanie for a minute before getting the crowd to cheer for his plan to kick Chris Benoit’s ass but Stephanie was adamant...not until he was cleared by a doctor! (A)

The Hardyz w/ Lita tied up with The Radicalz (Guerrero & Saturn w/ Terri) next. Raven took a moment before the match to explain that the "Raven effect” that would be sweeping the WWF! (C+)

Hardcore Holly, Raven's scheduled opponent came out to take it to the Harcorde Champ. The two hit each other with a variety of objects as they brawled around the backstage area. Al Snow is the new champ! ©

Coach was backstage with The Rock to get his thoughts on his match-up with The Undertaker tonight. Ivory worked the outside while Steven Richards served as a guest commentator for the match. With Ivory’s involvement, The RTC did a good job getting heat on the Dudleyz, but things took a turn when Billy Gunn got involved by attacking Richards on the commentary desk. The distraction allowed The Dudleyz to score the win...but the real fun was post match. (C+)

Post match: Billy fed both Richards and Ivory to the Dudleyz next and both members of the RTC took a trip to Dudley-ville via table! ©

Jonathan Coachman was set to interview Chris Benoit regarding his win over Jericho and potential match with Steve Austin. Benoit hardly had a word out before Chris Jericho blindsided Benoit as Ross and Lawler sold how livid Jericho was for being robbed of his title opportunity by Benoit on SmackDown! (A)

Next up, Kane made short work of Scotty Too Hotty as the announce team explained that Kane was in peak, form ahead of the Rumble match. (C+)

Backstage in Stephanie’s office, Trish Stratus responded to Stephanie’s summons. Steph verbally shredded Stratus--telling her that her father, Vince McMahon, was returning to Raw next week and Stephanie expected Stratus to keep her distance from him...or else! (B-)

Elsewhere backstage, Raven attacked Al Snow! As she attempted to speak, giving the crowd in attendance plenty of time to boo, the sounds of breaking glass and “Stone Cold” himself interrupted her. Austin told Stephanie he was competing against Chris Benoit tonight and Stephanie responded that he had not been cleared. Austin threw it to the TitanTron where a doctor, shot live from his office, admitted that while Austin was showing signs having wear and tear commiserate with his career and injury history. That said, he felt that his condition was not severe enough to bar him from action. (A)

Chris Benoit had ready for this eventuality however, and the “Rabid Wolverine” and Intercontinental Champion crashed into an unsuspecting Austin from behind, nailing him with a stiff clothesline! Benoit pounced on the prone Austin as Stephanie laughed. Benoit locked in the Crossface and the program went to break as officials pried Benoit off of Austin. (B+)

The show came back with Grandmaster Sexay squaring off with Tazz. Cole and Lawler unpacked what they just saw paying little attention to the in-ring action. Meanwhile, Tazz had his way with the Grandmaster in the ring. Cole and Lawler also put over the upcoming Royal Rumble match as Tazz secured a win with the Tazzmission, looking strong heading into the big event. (C+)

Backstage, Chris Jericho was with Lt. Commisioner Debra, noting she had wanted to see him. Debra informed Jericho that, in the interest of fairness, Austin required something to counter Benoit’s cheap tactics and she had exactly the perfect equalizer: Jericho would serve as referee! Jericho grinned ear to ear at the thought of being in the same ring as Chris Benoit and happily agreed to accept the role. (B)

The clamor of sirens signaling the arrival of The Right to Censor was up next, as the group was scheduled to go head to head with Billy Gunn and The Dudleyz. Steven Richards manned the announce booth as a guest commentator as Goodfather, Bull Buchanon and Val Venis did the heavy lifting. The Dudleyz and Gunn took control of the match after a few minutes, however the tides changed when Edge and Christian made their presence known on the entrance stage. Edge and Christian's goofy insults provided the perfect distraction, allowing Ivory to low blow Billy Gunn and allowing Val Venis to take the win for the ultra conservative group! (C+)

Back from commercial, The Rock and The Undertaker headed to the ring together, both demanding to get their hands on Kurt Angle and to be added to the title match at Royal Rumble. This brought Stephanie McMahon out who said that it will be Vince McMahon on RAW next week and he will decide who will face Angle--but if they wanted to get their hands on Angle tonight, they could...in a 3 on 2 handicap match! The Rock and The Undertaker could team up against Angle and Edge & Christian tonight! (B+)

Back in WWF New York, Jonathan Coachman was standing by with the Hardcore Champion, Raven. Raven began talking of the Raven Effect sweeping the WWF when… (C-)

...Al Snow walloped Raven with a trash can! Snow jumped on top of Raven and, from seemingly nowhere, Mike Chioda counted the 3! Al Snow is the new Hardcore Champion! (C+)

World Title Contender’s Tournament: Benoit and Austin had a hellacious brawl next. Jericho was equitable with his laying down the rules for the most part. Toward the end of the bout, Benoit began getting heat on Austin, pushing Jericho’s buttons by abusing the 5-count, going to the eyes, and using a closed fist. As Jericho’s frustration with Benoit’s tactics grew, Benoit shoved Jericho. This caused Jericho to shove Benoit back as the two engaged in a shouting match! The exchange allowed Austin the minute he needed to wait on Benoit to turn around before dropping him with a Stunner! Jericho counted the 3 and Austin advanced in the tournament! (B-)

Post Match: Jericho and Benoit weren’t done with each other, both feeling that the other had cost them a title opportunity. The two had to be pulled apart heading into a break. (B)

Backstage Kevin Kelly was standing by with Billy Gunn. “The One” said he was tired of the RTC and it was time things changed! In fact, he just got off the phone with Chyna and she will be ready to return at the Royal Rumble so he was officially challenging Richards and Ivory to meet him and Chyna at the event! (C-)

WWF Light Heavyweight Championship: A lot more than just the gold was on the line next as Matt Hardy (accompanied by Lita) took on the Light Heavyweight Champion, Dean Malenko. Malenko used his superior mat skill to ground Hardy for the majority of the bout as he catcalled to Lita on the outside. With Hardy selling the attack, Malenko took a moment to gloat sticking his face out the ropes and making a gesture to kiss Lita! Lita responded by nailing Malenko in the jaw with a forearm! Malenko stumbled right into an awaiting Matt Hardy who dropped the creep with a Twist of Fate! 3 seconds later and we had a new Light Heavyweight Champion! (C+)

This edition of the Royal Rumble Rewind featured “The Heartbreak Kid” Shawn Michaels dangling over the top with only 1 foot touching the floor in 1995 after going bell-to-bell in the matchup. (B-)

Despite the best efforts of the combined forces of The Undertaker and The Rock, the team of Angle, Edge and Christian simply had the superior numbers. The trio used their man vantage to draw the referee’s attention and smuggle in cheap shots, working as classic heels. (B)

As the bout closed, Edge and Christian worked the Undertaker on the outside as Angle locked in the Ankle Lock on The Rock! That’s when “Stone Cold” Steve Austin made his presence known once again this evening, laying Angle out with a steel chair as the SmackDown! went off the air. (B+)

Show Rating: B (Popularity up in 20 regions)

TV Rating: 14.02
