2026 and beyond : A Bellator Story

BELLATOR MMA

At the beginning of 2017, the Bellator organization made a clean house in its administration. Indeed, Scott Coker missed his bet with Bellator, and after several freak shows, the MMA organization decided to take another route. The Bellator's new mission would include a more aggressive approach to the free agent market, sports-based cards, not fallen and elderly stars. The new direction of the company has also changed the way of sharing fight nights around the world. Thus, the Bellator would introduce two cards per month: A first card on PPV, and a second card two weeks later on the Spike TV channel.

When I took the reins of Bellator, the heavyweight belt was vacant. So, I booked an important matchup: Rampage Jackson against undefeated prospect Vitaly Minakov. Since then, the belt has changed hands several times, with Sergei Kharitonov beeing the most stable champion in the last 9 years, with 3 defences.

Generally a spectacular division, the heavyweight division is an aging one where talent is rather difficult to find.

An interesting division, we're trying to develop talent in this division since a long time. We even held a Reality Show to find new gems in this division. Gustavo Neto looks like he could hold to the title for a long time if he wins it.

There's a lot of potential in this division, with nice prospects like Nogueira and Tsai, but also up and comers like Di Chirico, Enz, Marshmann, with also aging ex-champ like Ruth, Janikowski, McCrory. In general, this division is one of the better in the organization.

Nishiura was a great champion, until popping for PED at Bellator MMA 248. He had beaten before that great fighter as Conor McGregor (In particular violent fashion), and Aaron Pico. Both of those fighters making their Bellator debut tonight ! Alvarenga got 7 of his 8 wins by submission, and Taylor finished 4 of his 5 pro fights with a Sub !

Round 1 : The fighters spent nearly four minutes fighting in the fence before Yves Lavigne separates them. Alvarenga makes a takedown, but no damage is done to the ground.

Round 2 : From the start of the round, Alvarenga goes for takedown and manages to bring his opponent to the ground. He transitions and secures a arm triangle choke for the victory.

Lightweight Bout; Will Brooks (25-8-1NC, 13-5-1NC BMMA) vs Vicente Souza (6-1, 2-0 BMMA)

Will Brooks is coming back of a first round TKO win back at Bellator MMA 267. At this same event, Souza tapped Tetsuya Yamada !

Round 1 : Well, this fight didn't lasted long ! After the touch of gloves, Brooks shoots for the takedown, but fall into a tight Guillotine and doesn't have the choice to tap, in just 53 seconds !

Laprise has won 3 of his last 4 by knockout, and Che Mills has won 2 of his last 3 by submission. A classic matchup between the striker and the ground guy

Round 1 :Mills tries to go with some takedowns, but doesn't manage to get the fight to the ground. Laprise doesn't connect really either, and the round finishes with some wrestling on the cage.

Laprise 10-9

Round 2 :After a minute in the round, Laprise finds an opening and connects with a vicious kick to the head. Mills falls backwards, and Laprise comes to finish the job with furious ground and pound, and wins by knockout.

Middleweight Bout; Caio Magalhaes (16-3, 3-3 BMMA) vs (#24) Israel Adesanya (18-3, 6-3 BMMA)

Magalhaes won his 3 BMMA bouts by 3 different way : A KO, a Sub and a Decision. Adesanya has 4 knockouts in the Bellator organization, and won a split decision in his last outing.

Round 1 :Both fighters stands in the center of the ring and strikes, making fans roar in the arena. Adesanya connects with a 1-2 who knocks Magalhaes out cold !

Light Heavyweight Bout; Jan Svoboda (2-0, 2-0 BMMA) vs (#21) Darell Powers (6-2-1NC, 6-2-1NC BMMA)

The two pro wins of Svoboda came by Heel Hook and Toe Hold. Powers didn't look the same since his one year suspension, he last lost a decision.

Round 1 :Powers goes for the haymakers early in the round, but can't connect with anything. Svoboda smothers him to the cage and gets a takedown, where he doesn't do any damage.

Svoboda 10-9

Round 2 :15 seconds into the round, Svoboda knocks down Powers with a right hook, but can't finish the fight. Then, he locks a kimura, but Powers evades it in extremis. The rest of the round is marked by the submission attemps of Svoboda, all blocked by Powers

20-18 Svoboda

Round 3 :They trade in the middle of the cage for almost two minutes, the Svoboda catch an ouverture and takes Powers down, and manage to lock a leglock for the finish.

Kenny Jordan is a decision machine, with 15 of his 17 wins acquired by decision. But in the red corner, Justin Lawrence is on 4 win streak, with his last 3 fights finished by knockout. Will he crack Jordan ?

Round 1 :Kenny Jordan tries wrestles his way to win the first round, securing a takedown in the last seconds of the round. Pretty dull round in my opinion.

Jordan 10-9

Round 2 :Justin Lawrence adapted really well between the rounds and now plays Jordan's game, and out-wrestles him.

19-19

Round 3 :Lawrence seems really confident, and hits a kick that leaves Jordan wobbly. Lawrence follow up with a massive right that knock out cold Jordan.

Middleweight Bout; (#12) Tyjon Adeyemi (9-2, 2-0 BMMA) vs (#9) Joel Tsai (13-1, 6-1 BMMA)

Our co-main event of the evening presents two nice prospect in the 185 division. The winner of this fight will likely fight in a title-eliminator next. Adeyemi has a nice all-around game, with 4 subs and 3 knockouts on his record. Tsai has 10 subs and two knockouts. This fight could be really interesting !

Round 1 :Adeyemi don't touch gloves. The first half of the round his on the feets, where nothing really connects if only a nice leg kick from Adeyemi. Tsai then goes for a takedown and controls the remaining minutes of the round on the ground.

Tsai 10-9

Round 2 :Tsai goes immediatly for the trip, and takedown Adeyemi another time in this round. Tsai tries a couple of submission, but Adeyemi blocks them all.

Tsai 20-18

Round 3 :This round is marked by a master class of trips and takedowns, Tsai securing at least 3 takedowns in this round. He can't get the finish tho, and we go to the judges score cards.

Judges scores the bout : 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27 for the winner by UD, Joel Tsai

Flyweight Championship Bout; © Sergio Pettis (31-3, 2-0 BMMA) vs (#7) Ryan Hamill (9-0, 3-0 BMMA)

It's time ! For the main event of the evening ! Pettis seems to be on another planet so he is dominant. He defended the UFC gold 6 times before signing with us, and the question is : Who can dethrone him ? Hamill is on a 9 fight winning streak, and he will have the biggest challenge of his career.

Round 1 :Hamill seems pretty well prepared, as he slams the champ to the mat in the opening minute of the round ! After a bit of wrestling on the ground, referee get the fighters up, but Hamill succeed another takedown.

Hamill 10-9

Round 2 :Hamill gets the Belly to belly to get the fight to the ground. He tries and arm triangle, but Pettis blocks it. Ref then bring back the fight standing. Pettis traps Hamill his back to the cage and scores with some nice dirty boxing, till the belt ring.

Hamill 20-18

Round 3 :A dull round, where Pettis got nice dirty boxing for about a minute and an half, and after he stalled a bit. Pretty boring round in general.

Hamill 29-28

Round 4 :45 seconds into the round, Hamill goes back where he scored points earlier in the fight and slams Pettis to the mat. He transitions the rest of the round on top, securing this round. Hamill seems however to gas out a bit.

Hamill 39-37

Round 5 :Pettis is aware he is losing this fight on the judges scores, he goes for the kill in this round. He lands a clean head kick that leaves Hamill really light on his feets. Pettis finishes the job with a big right, to save the day and his belt !

January Drugs comes back positive

Two Bellator MMA fighters are facing a one year ban from the MMA since USADA found trace of TRT in their samples for the last two fights cards held by the organization. Yusaku Inoue, who lost his promotional debut against Andre Santos will keep his split decision lose on his record. Herbert Burns saw his knockout win against Mike de la Torre overturned into a no contest. Fighters haven't commented yet the story.
