New Beginning

Recommended Posts

I've planned to do a save from the very beginning of modern MMA from before WMMA5 was announced and now, here it is. This won't be a watcher save, as I have several avatars and will jump from company to company as I see fit. I deleted every character so the whole save will be regens. I used the X-CVE mod from last edition, with the expanded name database and all the added companies. It's a great mod but I won't use all the great characters in it so I can watch the game evolve organically. Basically every fighter, judge, referee, etc. will be a regen.

The game starts in January 1989, with the only company open being the World Vale Tudo Council (WVTC). I've edited the rules so it's 2 15-minute halves, with the fight being a draw if it goes the distance. The rest of the companies will open in the future.

Fighter profiles

Josemanuel Carreira (March 1991)

Terrell Hutzel (May 1990)

Adel Luyten (January 1992)

Colas Ruas (February 1993)

The first WVTC show took place in March 1989, with five fights featuring martial artists from different disciplines taking on BJJ students. The rules allowed everything from kicks and punches to submission holds, promising a more visceral experience than other combat sports.

WVTC Honor card

Josemanuel Carreira (Wrestling) vs. Manolito Lemos (BJJ)

Caetano Fonseca (Wrestling) vs. Colas Ruas (BJJ)

Tacito Guedes (Boxing) vs. Hermenegildo Alamo (BJJ)

Noe Bonifacio (Muay Thai) vs. Marlin Fernandes (BJJ)

Yafeu Gaia (Muay Thai) vs. Mio Reis (BJJ)

Gaia vs. Reis

Gaia is an Ecuadorian fighter who might be too big to compete in Muay Thai, coming in at 6 ft 8 and 280 lbs. Gaia started striking well but gassed quickly, with Reis landing a solid left hook 4 minutes in. However, Gaia then opened a cut over Reis' eye which caused the fight to be stopped by TKO, giving the BJJ contingent the first loss of the night!

Bonifacio vs. Fernandes

Bonifacio is another big Muay Thai fighter, standing 6 ft 4 and weighing 270 lbs. Fernandes quickly shot in and took the fight to the ground with a single leg. Then, he worked his way to mount and armbared Bonifacio easily, just two minutes into the fight.

Guedes vs. Alamo

Guedes showed the best striking of the night, hitting Alamo with flurries of punches and dropping him a minute and a half in. However, once the fight went to the ground he had no hope and Alamo armbared him with 4:26 gone by.

Fonseca vs. Ruas

Fonseca is a wrestler but he was hitting Ruas with strikes like he was a boxer, but stamina once again became a factor early on with Fonseca looking gassed by the 5-minute mark. Ruas took him down easily at 7:00 and got an easy mount. From mount, he started the ground-and-pund which rocked Fonseca. Fonseca eventually rolled over and gave up his back, at which point it was only a matter of time until Ruas got the rear-naked choke and tapped him out.

Carreira vs. Lemos

Lemos is the one BJJ fighter in this card who is bigger than his opponent. Carreira was cut over the left eye with a hook less than a minute into the fight but he would overcome that and rock Lemos shortly afterwards. The two fighters then started grappling, despite the size advantage, Lemos couldn't take Carreira down or push him against the ropes. The first half ended with no finish, making this fight the first to go into the second half.

The second half started in the same way with both fighters trading heavy shots and being unable to take each other down. Lemos finally dropped at the 5-minute mark (20 minutes into the fight), after a big right from Carreira. Carreira then unleashed some ground-and-pound and submitted the clearly rocked Lemos with an armbar.

WVTC Honor results

Gaia beat Reis - TKO (cut) - Rd 1, 8:20

Fernadez beat Bonifacio - Submission (armbar) - Rd 1, 2:09

Alamo beat Guedes - Submission (armbar) - Rd 1, 4:26

Ruas beat Fonseca - Submission (rear-naked choke) - Rd 1, 12:00

Carreira beat Lemos - Submission (armbar) - Rd 2, 6:10

Overall, the BJJ students went 3-2, with the Gaia-Reis result being a fortuitous loss. The WVTC's first event drew a modest crowd of 197 people in Rio de Janeiro but interest in this new sport seems to be growing.

New signings

The new WVTC is already expanding their roster from the inital ten fighters. In addition to signing more local fighters, fighters from all over the world have traveled to Brazil to take part in the WVTC. The foreign fighters who will now take part in no holds barred fighting in Brazil are:

* Gace Mange, a taekwondo student from Calgary.

* Kazutoshi Kumori, a Muay Thai fighter from Tokyo.

* Leopoldo Cepeda and Martin Armijo, two Panamanian Muay Thai students.

* Samuel Browne, an American aikido practicioner.

* Tameyoshi Kuwata and Yasushi Moriwaki, two Japanese kickboxers.

ed: This is as far as I got in the demo, but I will update this as I go along with it after tomorrow's release.

Thanks! Appreciate the feedback. With the game releasing early I had to get in another show today.

-

With the influx of foreign talent, the WVTC organized a tournament featuring the seven new foreign fighters for April 1989. Rounding out the field was Noe Bonifacio, seeking to bounce back from a loss in the previous month’s show. The tournament required a rule change, as there needed to be judges involved to determine who advanced if a fight went the distance. Each tournament fight consists of a single ten minute round. Two more fights in the card involving Brazilian fighters went on with the usual WVTC ruleset.

WVTC Glory card:

International Tournament final

Sabion Leopoldo (Wrestling) vs. Katungi Rizzo (Muay Thai)

International Tournament semifinals

Epifanio Broas (Kickboxing) vs. Karlos Gonsales (Boxing)

International Tournament quarterfinals

Tournament quarterfinals

Leopoldo Cepeda vs. Samuel Browne

Yasushi Moriwaki vs. Kazutoshi Komori

Martin Armijo vs. Noe Bonifacio

Tameyoshi Kuwata vs. Gace Mange

Kuwata vs. Mange

Mange’s striking shone through as he laid a beating on Kuwata, who managed to stay on his feet throughout. Mange was unable to get the finish and took the first decision in WVTC history over Mange.

Armijo vs. Bonifacio

Bonifacio threw with volume, but Armijo’s power came through in the end as he landed a knockout shot after 8 minutes.

Moriwaki vs. Komori

A showdown between two strikers, Moriwaki landed with more power and dropped Komori twice. The fight went the distance and Moriwaki picked up a clear decision

Browne vs. Cepeda

Browne went for the takedown quickly. After a quick scramble which saw Cepeda gain the top position, Browne swept him and eventually submitted him with an armbar. The fight took just over two minutes overall.

Broas vs. Gonsales

The first of two non-tournament bouts on this show. Another fight between two strikers, this time both seem unwilling to take shots and stand so they went to the ground for large stretches of the fight. However they were both incompetent on there and never got close to finishing. This was the first WVTC fight to reach the time limit.

Armijo vs. Mange

The first semi-final. Armijo was going toe-to-toe with Mange until he broke his hand. After that, Mange dropped Armijo and finished him with some brutal ground and pound.

Moriwaki vs. Browne

Browne shot in quickly once again. Moriwaki’s main strengths are all as a striker, so the American Browne was able to apply another armbar to advance to the final.

Leopoldo vs. Rizzo

After a start where Rizzo was able to out-strike Leopoldo. Leopoldo was able to take the fight to the ground, but he wasn’t able to do much before the first half expired. Going into the second half, Rizzo opened a cut over Leopoldo, through round 2 he was connecting often and eventually the cut got bad enough where the referee called it a TKO win for Rizzo.

Mange vs. Browne

The final was a bout between the Canadian and the American fighters. Mange got off to a great start, rocking Browne with a hook. He was completely laying a beatdown on Mange through the first five minutes. Eventually Browne scored a takedown and after getting two armbar wins previously on the show, he once again showed great skills on the ground, this time rocking Mange with some big shots from mount position to get a big comeback win.

WVTC Glory results:

Samuel Browne beat Gace Mange - TKO (strikes) - Rd 1, 8:44

Katungi Rizzo beat Sabion Leopoldo - TKO (cut) - Rd 2, 4:00

Samuel Browne beat Yasushi Moriwaki - Submission (armbar) - Rd 1, 1:56

Gace Mange beat Martin Armijo - TKO (strikes) - Rd 1, 6:05

Epifanio Broas drew Karlos Gonsales - Time Limit - Rd 2, 15:00

Samuel Browne beat Leopoldo Cepeda - Submission (armbar) - Rd 1, 2:10

Yasushi Moriwaki beat Kazutoshi Komori - Unanimous decision - Rd 1, 10:00

Gace Mange beat Tameyoshi Kuwata - Unanimous decision - Rd 1, 10:00

Bonifacio was cut after the show, following two consecutive losses. The show drew a crowd of 265.

Browne fails drug test!

In shocking news, the winner of the WVTC International Tournament, Samuel Browne, has failed an anti-doping test for recreational drugs. His three wins have been voided and he’s been cut from the promotional company. This is the second WVTC fighter who has failed a drug test in just two shows. Some media outlets now claim the sport only attracts lowlifes and outcasts.

Others have said WVTC is employing a double standard as Caetano Fonseca also failed a drug test after the first WVTC show but the Brazilian fighter seems to remain employed.

The WVTC sought to bounce back from the Browne scandal with another show in June of '89. The card featured the first rematch in the company's history with Yafeu Gaia going up against Mio Reis after their first fight ended with a TKO due to a cut.

WVTC Onslaught card

Josemanuel Carreira (Wrestling) vs. Colas Ruas (BJJ)

Hermenegildo Alamo (BJJ) vs. Epifanio Broas (Kickboxing)

Marlin Fernandes (BJJ) vs. Leopoldo Cepeda (Muay Thai)

Yafeu Gaia (Muay Thai) vs. Mio Reis (BJJ)

Tacito Guedes (Boxing) vs. Yasushi Moriwaki (Kickboxing)

Guedes vs. Moriwaki

Guedes stepped in and out of pocket at will here, landing two or three flurries on Moriwaki, who seemed helpless. Guedes finished Moriwaki with a left hand against the ropes after just three minutes.

Gaia vs. Reis II

Reis got cut less than a minute into the fight. Reis then cornered Gaia against the ropes but the fight was reset after the referee had the doctor check his cut. Gaia once again gassed after about five minutes, at which point Reis took him down and applied a rear-naked choke. Gaia refused to tap and it was only once he passed out that the referee ended the fight.

Fernandes vs. Cepeda

Cepeda opened a cut on Fernandes’ face early on.but was unable to stop a takedown, Fernandes tapped him out with a triangle choke shortly afterwards.

Broas vs. Alamo

After going 30 minutes on the previous show, Broas didn’t take long to knock Alamo silly with a mean right straight, ending the fight after two and a half minutes.

Carreira vs. Ruas

Ruas and Carreira were unwilling to strike and wrestled against the ropes for most of the first half, with Ruas leaning heavily on Carreira as he seemed tired. Ruas seemed exhausted after failing to complete a takedown early on. This continued on the second round, with Carreira unable to break free. The fight ended in a draw after reaching the 30 minute time limit and was universally regarded as horrible.

WVTC Onslaught results

The show drew 207 people.

Love this idea, looking for a DB just like it. Unfortunately getting a "Runtime Error 3021" with this DB. <img alt=":(" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/frown.png.e6b571745a30fe6a6f2e918994141a47.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />.

That's a shame, I just realized there's a pretty critical flaw in the database with not enough owners for the new companies but I figured a workaround so I'll carry on with the save. Hopefully as the game world develops more potential owners spawn.

A new WVTC card was announced for September '89, featuring several of the Council's best fighters. Heading the card was a match-up between Marlin Fernandes and Epifanio Broas, following the latter's spectacular stoppage over Hermenegildo Alamo. The card featured the return of International tournament participant Gace Mange, as well as the WVTC debut of Puerto Rican-American wrestler Dominik Seltzer. The card featured two of the best strikers in the promotion, with Broas and Mange.

WVTC Ambush card

Marlin Fernandes (BJJ) vs. Epifanio Boas (Kickboxing)

Josemanuel Carreira (Submission wrestling) vs. Mio Reis (BJJ)

Gace Mange (Taekwondo) vs. Manolito Lemos (BJJ)

Dominik Seltzer (Submission wrestling) vs. Sabion Leopoldo (Freestlyle wresling)

Colas Ruas (BJJ) vs. Karlos Gonsales (Boxing)

Ruas vs. Gonsales

Ruas was matched against the much bigger (50 lbs heavier) boxer Gonsales. Ruas failed to complete a takedown before taking Gonsales to the mat with a leg trip. Ruas took the back of Gonsales and applied a rear-naked choke to get his second career win.

Seltzer vs. Leopoldo

Seltzer gassed quickly in his first pro fight. Leopoldo seemed to also be running out of gas when Seltzer landed a big punch that dropped Leopoldo. Seltzer tried to apply a kimura but was blocked. But he got an armbar not too long after that, getting the win by submission.

Mange vs. Lemos

Mange started the fighting lighting Lemos up with flashy combinations. After being denied in a takedown, Lemos grabbed Mange in a clinch and picked him up for a slam. Lemos passed half guard with ease, got the mount and then tapped Mange with an arm triangle.

Carreira vs. Reis

Reis started by trapping Carreira against the ropes, for the entire first half the fight looked like a repeat of the awful Carreira-Ruas match. Reis got cut early in the second half but he rocked Carreira afterwards with two big punches. After being denied an arm triangle, Reis lost control and Carreira scrambled. Carreira ended up in side control. After a failed sweep, Reis gave up his back and Carreira submitted him with a rear-naked choke.

Fernandes vs. Broas

Fernandes failed to complete a takedown but got a leg trip afterwards, taking the fight to the ground and nullifying Broas’ striking advantage. Fernandes quickly got an arm triangle and Broas had to tap out.

WVTC Ambush results:

Ruas beat Gonsales - Submission (rear-naked choke) - Rd 1, 6:13

Seltzer beat Leopoldo- Submission (kimura) - Rd 1, 6:47

Lemos beat Mange - Submission (arm triangle) - Rd 1, 4:05

Carreira beat Reis - Submission (rear-naked choke) - Rd 2, 8:23

Fernandes beat Broas - Submission (arm triangle) - Rd 1, 3:06

Once again, grapplers dominated the WVTC's fourth event, with all the fights ending by submission. The show drew an attendance of 207.

With most of the WVTC's best fighters out recuperating, the Council put on a card featuring mostly strikers for November 1989. Even though it was perhaps the weakest card, it closed out a strong debut year with five events for the new company.

WVTC Annihilation card

Tacito Guedes (Boxing) vs. Katungi Rizzo (Muay Thai)

Leopoldo Cepeda (Muay Thai) vs. Terrell Hutzel (Pankration)

Kazutoshi Komori (Kickboxing) vs. Tameyoshi Kuwata (Muay Thai)

A fight between Yasushi Moriwaki and Hermenegildo Alamo fell through before the show.

Komori vs. Kuwata

A fight between Komori, with a background in Muay Thai, and Kuwata, a kickboxer. Kuwata was more succesful from long range and opened a cut on Komori early on but Komori returned the favor halfway through with a brutal Muay Thai clinch, cutting Kuwata with an elbow. Komori was then rocked by a big 1-2 before the round ended.

At the beginning of the second half, Kuwata took down Komori and once again had him hurt with some ground strikes, but he couldn’t get the stoppage. However, Komori gave up his back and after taking several more big punches, Kuwata got a rear-naked choke applied and got the win.

Cepeda vs. Hutzel

Hutzel is a European newcomer to the company, but he already holds two wins in minor shows. Hutzel got a takedown early and hurt with big shots. After a scramble, Hutzel got another takedown an applied an armbar after one failed try

Broas vs. Armijo

Armijo got rocked by a right hook less than a minute in and after getting hit a few more times, the ref stopped the fight.

Guedes vs. Rizzo

Guedes and Rizzo went toe-to-toe trading punches for five minutes, until Guedes landed a bomb on Rizzo and knocked him out.

The WVTC started out 1990 strong, with a card featuring a match-up between Josemanuel Carreira and 3-0 budding star Marlin Fernandes. The card also featured the debut of two international fights in Australian Will Brandrick and Russian Andrian Mizirov.

WVTC Evolution card

Marlin Fernandes (BJJ) vs. Josemanuel Carreira (Submission wrestling)

Epifanio Broas (Kickboxing) vs. Colas Ruas (BJJ)

Terrell Hutzel (Pankration) vs. Will Brandrick (Aikido)

Manolito Lemos (BJJ) vs. Tameyoshi Kuwata (Kickboxing)

Gace Mange (Taekowondo) vs. Hermenegildo Alamo (BJJ)

Andrian Mizirov (Freestyle wrestling) vs. Karlos Gonsales (Boxing)

Mizirov vs. Gonsales

Mizirov got rocked immediately by the big boxer, but he recovered and got a quick takedown. Gonsales then got flattened with a RNC, making this his second straight loss.

Mange vs. Alamo

Mange started out landing his trademark combinations and flurries, but Alamo seemed to shrug them off. Mange eventually tired and clinched, at which point Alamo immediately took him down and applied a kimura.

Lemos vs. Kuwata

Lemos got cut by a punch early on but eventually he closed the distance and took Kuwata to the ground with an outside trip. Lemos then quickly ensnared Kuwata in a kimura to get the win.

Hutzel vs. Brandrick

Within 2 minutes, Brandrick nailed Hutzel with a right straight but failed to capitalize. Hutzel returned the favour with a 1-3 combo which dropped Brandrick. After a scramble, both fighter started exchanging strikes out of a clinch while fighting against the ropes. The first half closed with both fighters tired and the crowd on their feet after an exciting round. 2 minutes into the second half, Brandrick opened a huge cut over Hutzel’s eye and proceeeded to take him down immediately. However, the rest of the fight slipped away as they reached a stalemate in the ground, wary of submissions.

Broas vs. Ruas

Broas was landing good shots before being taken down by Ruas. Broas then gave up his back and was subbed with a RNC.

Fernandes vs. Carreira

Carreira rocked Fernandes early on, but Fernandes showed great instincts and parried and dodged Carreira’s next two punches. Fernandes tried to take Carreira down but couldn’t and viceversa, until Fernandez shot in, grabbed a leg and then swept Carreira’s other leg. Fernandes couldn’t get a kimura out of side control. After a period where they exchanged strikes, Fernandes was hurt by Carreira once again with a right hook and then dropped by another right hook. Carreira unleashed the ground and pound, which caused the referee to stop the fight.

WVTC Evolution results:

Mizirov beat Gonsales - Submission (rear-naked choke) - Rd 1, 2:24

Alamo beat Mange - Submission (kimura) - Rd 1, 8:33

Lemos beat Kuwata - Submission (kimura) - Rd 1, 5:27

Hutzel drew Brandrick - Time Limit - Rd 2, 15:00

Ruas beat Broas - Submission (rear-naked choke) - Rd 1, 5:23

Carreira beat Fernandes - TKO (strikes) - Rd 1, 11:51

With the loss taken by Fernandes, no fighter from the Council's original 10-man roster has an unblemished record, as they have all either taken a loss or fought to a draw. This highlights how hard and unpredictable the budding sport can be, but it's also prevented any fighter from rising as a clear cut star so far.

WVTC Gold announced + Prediction contest!

With WVTC’s BJJ fighters having largely established their dominance and the martial art vs. martial art focus losing its appeal, the Council chose to organize another tournament between all their most succesful fighters. An agreement was reached to show the fight on cable TV channel Canal Extremo. The event was named WVTC Gold. This will cause a four month break between shows as scheduling issues were worked out. The participants chosen are:

#1 Colas Ruas (3-0-1, BJJ, Sao Paulo)

#2 Josemanuel Carreira (3-0-1, Submission Wrestling, Sao Paulo)

#3 Manolito Lemos (2-1, BJJ, Sao Paulo)

#4 Hermenegildo Alamo (2-1, BJJ, Venezuela)

#5 Tacito Guedes (2-1, Boxing, Ecuador)

#6 Marlin Fernandes (3-1, BJJ, Rio de Janeiro)

#7 Terrell Hutzel (3-0-1, Pankration, Switzerland)

#8 Andrian Mizirov (4-1, Freestyle Wrestling, Russia)

Will Brandrick and Dominick Seltzer were chosen as alternates.

-

It's early in the game but a one-night tournament between all the best fighters so far felt like the right move. Feel free to predict a winner! I'll start running a sporadic prediction contest. It won't be for every card, only for the biggest fights/tournaments.

Brandrick vs. Seltzer

With no injuries, two of WVTC’s foreign fighters were scheduled to face each other to kick off the show. Seltzer was much heavier and bigger but that didn’t stop Brandrick from going for the takedown immediately, which he achieved in his third try. Seltzer was caught in a triangle but refused to tapped until he popped his head free. Another close fight between two good grapplers who couldn’t go to the ground. Lemos took the decision on account of throwing more punches, even though neither fighter was ever significantly hurt by a strike.

Alamo vs. Guedes

Guedes, the only pure striker in the tournament, shook Alamo with a left hook early on. However he made the mistake of going to the ground with him. There, Alamo eventually got the mount and Guedes ended up giving up his back to allow the RNC.

Ruas vs. Mizirov

Mizirov dropped Ruas with the third punch he threw and Ruas was defenseless when Mizirov went to his ground and pound game, getting the TKO in less than a minute.

Lemos vs. Hutzel

Hutzel and Lemos fought in close range, Hutzel landed a strike from the clinch which opened up a cut. Lemos panicked and tried to take down Hutzel for the remainder of the fight but was unable to do so. Hutzel won a unanimous decision.

Alamo vs. Mizirov

Mizirov was comfortably out-striking Alamo when he took him down about 4 minutes into the fight. After, he had a submission attempt blocked there was a scramble. Both fighters got ready to strike and that’s when Alamo caught Mizirov with a right hook bomb, which ended the fight immediately. Setting up Alamo vs. Hutzel for the finals.

Alamo vs. Hutzel

Hutzel started the fight with an incredible punch which dropped Alamo. As Hutzel started pounding on him, Alamo flipped him around and ended up in half guard. Hutzel forced his way back up and they ended up in a clinch. Alamo then proceeded to beat Hutzel up, throwing elbows, knees, and stomps and opening a cut under Hutzel’s eye. The referee motioned for a doctor to check the cut and after the fight restarted, Hutzel landed a 1-2 which dropped Alamo again. Alamo once again tipped Hutzel and attempted an armbar after he ended on north-south control. After another clinch where Alamo once again threw all sorts of elbows, knees and stomps at Hutzel, they ended back in striking range.

This time, Hutzel was rocked by a left hook but dodged the overhand follow-up. Just when it seemed like Alamo was sure to win the fight, Hutzel once again landed the 1-2 which shook Alamo. After a right hook, Alamo ended up against the ropes where Hutzel landed an uppercut which ended the fight and won him the tournament.

The final fight was by far the best of the save so far. After the tournament, it’s clear that most of these fighters are on a similar level. While most of them can beat most one-dimensional strikers, the BJJ fighters have a hard time beating someone with better striking who can hold them off on the ground, like Swiss pankrationist and new Vale Tudo champion Terrell Hutzel. While I didn’t issue a belt for the fight, it’s clear that he sits at the top after the tournament based on merit alone. I might hold a rematch against Carreira, since their quarterfinal match ended in a split decision.

Fighter profile: Terrell Hutzel (6-0-1)

Hutzel is a Swiss pankrationist. After traveling to Hungary and winning a no holds barred fight against a local fighter, he moved to South America hoping to be recruited by the WVTC. After notching another win in a smaller show in Recife, Hutzel was signed by the Council. He won his first fight by armbar against Leopoldo Cepeda. He then went the distance in a draw against Will Brandrick.

Hutzel entered the WVTC Gold tournament as the 7-seed but upset Josemanuel Carreira in a split decision. After beating BJJ specialist Manolito Lemos, Hutzel took part in maybe the greatest match ever in the history of the young sport against Hermenegildo Alamo. Hutzel and Alamo went back and forth with knockdowns and submission attempts. With little time on the clock and seemingly on the verge being TKO’d, Hutzel was able to hurt Alamo with a trusty 1-2 combo and finished him with a big uppercut.

While Hutzel’s striking technique is very basic, he has big power in his hands. He’s also a hard fighter to submit or damage on the ground, with his control technique from the bottom being excellent.

Armijo vs. Gonsales

Fighter profile - Josemanuel Carreira (6-1-1)

Carreira is the best known fighter in the WVTC and the MMA world. Despite not being a smooth talker on the mic, often just thanking his sponsors and fans in interviews, Carreira has become known as the best fighter in the sport. He’s been a part of 6 main events for the Council, far more than anyone else.

After losing to Vale Tudo champion Terrell Hutzel by split decision in his first match at WVTC Gold, a fight that could’ve gone either way, Carreira defeated Hutzel in an immediate rematch, finishing him with some brutal ground and pound after an even fight. Since then, Carreira has been on a tear, submitting Tacito Guedes with a peruvian necktie and stopping BJJ specialist and WVTC Gold finalist Hermenegildo Alamo with a TKO.

Carreira’s athleticism sets him apart, with remarkable strength and incredible conditioning, needed to put in consistent effort for two 15 minute rounds in the WVTC. Since his debut, Carreira has raised his boxing skill and carries some power in his hands but his main technical attribute is a complete ground game. Carreira is virtually impossible to takedown, with his opponents going 1-of-26 (3.8%) in takedown attempts, he’s a good scrambler and a submission threat from multiple positions. On top of that, Carreira has a brutal ground-and-pound game, having finished several opponents with ground strikes.

Gonsales did alright for himself defending two takedowns but Fernandes was relentless and once he was on the ground, he tapped him easily with a kimura.

Holt vs. Reis

Holt was out-struck early on, being rocked with two big shots. He seemed to recover but then Reis landed a monster 1-2 combo, which dropped Holt. On the ground, Reis kept punishing him with big punches, eventually getting the TKO.

Caetano Fonseca (2-3) vs. Yafeu Gaia (4-3-1)

Fonseca vs. Gaia

Fonseca got an early takedown in round 1 and then laid on top of Gaia. He threw a lot of ground strikes but never threatened a finish. On the second half, Gaia couldn’t defend an early takedown but this time, Fonseca got a RNC. Gaia refused the tap but the ref called it a technical submission.

Guedes vs. Armijo

Guedes set up his strikes well and cornered Armijo against the ropes. There, he landed a series of shots which forced the referee to stop the fight.

Alamo vs. Broas

Broas rocked Alamo early on. Perhaps emulating Luyten, Broas then landed a brutal head kick which knocked Alamo stiff.

Ruas vs. Hutzel

Hutzel was very competitive standing up, but Ruas landed the meaningful shots. First, he cut Hutzel and after a while, he landed a left cross which knocked Hutz down. Ruas then tried to figure out which submission worked attempting a kimura, an armbar, and a triangle until Hutz finally was caught in a second kimura.

Carreira vs. Brandrick

Carreira was cut in the first half but he was never close to being finished. On the second half, Brandrick was tired and he got ragdolled twice. With ten minutes left in the fight, Carreira took Brandrick’s back but couldn’t get the RNC to finish Brandrick and thus the fight ended in a draw.

Gaia vs. Broas

Broas dominated the fight, dropping Broas once and out-striking him 251 to 5. 251 TO 5!! However, Gaia showed an incredible chin as he survived the distance and got a draw.

Shichirobei vs. Lemos

Shichirobei rocked Lemos early. Lemos recovered and like Gaia, went the distance in a boring fight.

Browne vs. Reis

The return of American Samuel Browne to the WVTC. Browne was cut after being caught with PEDs, but he won a one-night tournament during his sole night with the Council. Browne got hurt heavily by a straight from Reis and dropped by a right hook. Browne look about to be finished as Reis rained down punches on him but he got to scramble and ended in side control. From there, Browne attempted an armbar and then a kimura, which almost got Reis to tap before Browne lost his grip. With about 3 minutes left, Browne finally got an armbar which ended the fight.

Luyten vs. Fernandes

Karlos Gonsales (1-4-2) vs. Mio Reis (4-2-1)

Gonsales vs. Reis

Reis showed that his striking is pretty good once again. He countered a left hook with a right hook which dropped Gonsales and the referee was forced to stop the beatdown once Reis started raining down punches on Gonsales.

Holt vs. Fonseca

Hutzel vs. Alamo II

The first round was far from the barn-burner of their first meeting at WVTC Gold. Alamo controlled the bout from the clinch for the final stretch, getting a draw.

Carreira vs. Broas

Manolito Lemos (4-4-1) vs. Yafeu Gaia (4-5-1)

Mio Reis (4-3-1) vs. Agui Yuvaves (7-0)

Reis vs. Yuvaves

A debut at the WVTC for Asian wrestler Yuvaves. He landed big shots early but Reis' striking continues to improve and he stopped Yuvaves with a big hook.

Lemos vs. Gaia

Gaia was peppering Lemos with shots from range but he couldn't defend the takedown. BJJ student Lemos then passed guard easily and submitted Gaia.

Shichirobei vs. Broas

Shichirobei put up a disgustingly risk-averse fight. He took down at the start of each round Broas and seemingly hoped to stop him with ground strikes, but could never do any damage. Broas' best attribute is his striking but he couldn't do anything with Shichirobei laying on top of him and he was unable to defend the takedowns, as Shichirobei went 2-for-2.

Brandrick vs. Fernandes

This was the third time Fernandes got stopped, due to a string of shots from Brandrick. Fernandes is a good jiu-jiutsu player but his chin and physical skills are poor.

Luyten vs. Browne

Luyten did it again! Browne was the boogeyman, after popping for PEDs he was cut by the WVTC but he kept fighting and made his way back, beating Mio Reis on his return to WVTC. However, Luyten only needed a minute to drop him with a kick and finish him on the ground with some heavy shots.

Fighter profile: Adel Luyten (9-0-1NC)

Luyten is an accomplished Dutch kickboxer, with perhaps the most powerful high kick in MMA fighting. The rest of his skills are a question mark as no one has taken him to the ground. His strategy accounts for that as he aims to start strongly and overwhelm his opponents to set up his devastating head kicks.

He debuted in May of ‘89 in the same show as Terrell Hutzel. However, Luyten failed a drug test after scoring a KO within 1:17 minutes of the fight and the result was changed to a NC. He moved to South America, where he resumed fighting without serving his suspension. Luyten scored six consecutive round 1 knockout wins, all coming within three minutes of the fight’s beginning.

Luyten signed with WVTC on March of 1991, and went on to debut against original roster member Manolito Lemos. Luyten shocked Lemos knocking him out cold in 17 seconds. Luyten scored another head kick KO against Marlin Fernandes in under a minute in his next Council fight. Luyten would kick off 1992 in strong fashion, brutally stopping Samuel Browne with some ground and pound after dropping him with his signature head kick. The win was Luyten’s tenth official victory, with all of his past five fights ending in under a minute and the longest of all his fights ending after 2:34.

After his three impressive wins, Luyten has become one of the most popular fighters in the WVTC.

The WVTC has announced it is reforming and heavily changing its format. The ruleset will stay the same for every fight. 2x 15-minute rounds with a draw being declared if it goes the distance for normal fights, and a single 10-minute round with judges deciding the winner if it goes the distance for tournament fights. But rather than continue with a single openweight division, the WVTC will break up its roster into three weight classes:

Light heavyweight (186-205 lbs)

Cruiserweight (206-240 lbs)

Heavyweight (241-290 lbs)

The Council has signed ten new fighters to form its light heavyweight division. Furthermore, the WVTC wil now award title belts to its fighters. With its most popular show being WVTC Gold, the Council will hold a one-night tournament each year, alternating in a 4-year cycle between each of its divisions and an openweight tournament branded WVTC Gold. The schedule is as follows:

Light heavyweight (1992)

WVTC Gold 2 (Openweight) (1993)

Cruiserweight (1994)

Heavyweight (1995)

The winner of each divisional tournament will be awarded the title belt and will have until the next tournament to defend it in regular fights.

Finally, the Council’s shows will now be numbered starting with WVTC 1, which will host the light heavyweight tournament.
