New Beginning

Recommended Posts

The new era of the WVTC kicked off with a bunch of debuting South American light heavyweights facing each other for the first title, as well as a young fighter from China. The card kicked off with a fight between Rocha and Veloso, the two Council light heavyweights left off from the tournament, and also featured fights between vets at heavyweight and cruiserweight.

LHW: Primitivo Rocha (1-0) beat Donaldo Veloso (0-1) - Submission (armbar) - Round 1, 1:27

Rocha impressed and looked like a monster, destroying his opponent. Costa scored a knee KO over Andrada and Interiano shocked experienced kickboxer Manchu Zhang in the first round. Then followed a fight between heavyweights, where Abram Caston submitted Tacito Guedes, but he failed a drug test weeks after the event and the result was overturned.

In the semifinals, Calistro and Anes had a low volume fight but Calistro knocked out his opponent with a nasty left cross to advance to the finals. In the other bracket, Interiano took down Costa and pummeled him for most of the fight, but the referee came in very late and didn't stop the fight until there was only 15 seconds left.

With every fight so far being a match-up between a BJJ student and a striker, the final was no different, pitting Calistro, a kung fu prodigy, against Interiano and his BJJ skills. Calistro didn’t take long to get going, and dropped Interiano within 30 seconds. Calistro tried to execute some ground striking but Interiano didn’t allow it. After a failed kimura from Calistro, Interiano flipped him over, ending up in mount position, where he forced Calistro to give up his back. Interiano, by then fatigued couldn’t get the underhooks for an RNC and Calistro sweeped him and ended up in Interiano’s guard. Interiano then got ANOTHER sweep and ended up taking Calistro’s back, Calistro was able to scramble quickly, ending up back standing.

Interiano was rocked several times against the ropes but the referee didn’t jump in, and he eventually regathered. However, Interiano had no chance of stopping Calistro from landing whichever shots he wanted and was quickly dropped again. This time, he was too hurt to stop Calistro’s ground striking and the referee had no choice but to stop the fight. With the win, Cyrillus Calistro became the WVTC’s first divisional champion, at light heavyweight.

Josemanuel Carreira, the company's biggest star, debuted in the cruiserweight division, beating Thomas Holt easily with some ground-and-pound.

The second event of the WVTC's new era was headlined by Dutch kickboxer Adel Luyten going up against Brazilian boxer Epifanio Broas. Luyten seemed ready to become one of MMA's top stars after a series of quick KOs over wrestlers but he couldn't hang against another striker and Broas demolished him. Ruas improved to 9-1-1 by defeating Will Brandrick. Ruas has now been unbeaten for two years, having won six straight fights. WVTC Gold tournament winner Terrell Hutzel got another win over striker Ilyas Pankey, but Sam Browne (winner of an early tournament) couldn't win over jobber Caetano Fonseca. Bud de Freitas beat Manchu Zhang in a match between losers of the WVTC light heavyweight tournament.

WVTC 4 featured a lot of fighters debuting including 205 lb Argentinian striker Goredenna Pesqueira, unbeaten heavyweights Lloyd Locke and Calum Pemberton, and unbeaten cruiserweights Owen Lander and Cira Robinett. Pesqueira won his fight against Tristao Mata to kick off the show with a nasty body kick. Mata folded like a lawn chair and couldn't continue. In the next fight, Mio Reis scored his third consecutive KO. Llocke debuted by submitting Pemberton from half guard. Ruas and Carreira also added dominant wins over new fighters. The co-main event saw Primitivo Rocha challenge light heavyweight champion Cyrillus Callistro. Callistro was laying a beating on Rocha, scoring several powerful punches which dropped Rocha. Callistro couldn't finish him with the ground-and-pound, and Rocha's ground skills showed as he got a sweep and quickly KO'd Callistro with shots from the mount position.

Quarter-finals

Primitivo Rocha (3-0) beat Josemanuel Carreira (10-2-2) - Unanimous decision - Rd 1, 10:00

Takahiro Shichirobei (8-1-3) beat Manolito Lemos (6-5-1) - Unanimous decision - Rd 1, 10:00

Shichirobei beat Lemos easily with a striking clinic. Lemos didn't land a single strike and could never score a takedown. Shichirobei doesn't have any power but he got his first WVTC win here with a decision. Defending champion Terrell Hutzel got a submission win to advance to the semi-finals, he was being outstruck by Llocke but he won with a swift takedown and armbar.

Light heavyweight Andrada had the bigger Colas Ruas in trouble with a cross halfway through the fight but Ruas quickly scored a takedown and dominated the fight in the ground to get the unanimous decision. In the only upset of the first round, Rocha scored a quick takedown and then he laid and prayed until he won. It was an atrocious fight but it was the right strategy for the smaller man, coming in against the best fighter in the company. Carreira has now failed to win a single fight in both of the WVTC's tournaments.

Semi-finals

Primitivo Rocha (4-0) beat Takahiro Shichirobei (8-2-3) - Submission (Von Flue choke) - Rd 1, 4:21

Colas Ruas (12-1-1) beat Terrell Hutzel (10-3-3) - Submission (kimura) - Rd 1, 2:25

After a disappointing first round, both of the semi-finals were rated as great. Ruas and Hutzel rocked each other really quickly but Ruas got the upper hand on the ground and applied a kimura after a failed leglock to take out the champion. Ruas had been eliminated in the first WVTC Gold edition.

Primitivo Rocha sneaked into the final by beating Shichirobei. Rocha got a quick takedown and worked his way to a Von Flue choke. Rocha might have the best ground skills in the sport, beating much larger men during this tournament. With less than a year of professional experience and five fights under his belt. He was left out of the inagural light heavyweight tournament a year earlier but might be on the verge of winning the openweight tournament.

Final

Colas Ruas (13-1-1) beat Primitivo Rocha (4-1) - Submission (kimura) - Rd 1, 9:55

Rocha started out jabbing and trying to set up the takedown but Ruas was more aggressive, thowing almost no strikes and just shooting in on Rocha. Ruas got the takedown on his third try and then dominated the fight on the ground. He got the armbar on the nick of time, with five seconds left, but he was easily winning if it went to the judges. He is the second WVTC Gold winner!

Fighter profile: Colas Ruas (13-1-1)

Colas Ruas is a BJJ student from Sao Paulo. He was one of the first WVTC fighters and won his first fight at the inagural WVTC event against Caetano Fonseca by rear-naked choke. He seemed to be one of the most talented fighters in the company from the beginning but when matched up against the other standout in the company, Josemanuel Carreira, they had one of the worst fights in the history of the young sport. Both were unable to take the fight to the ground and their striking was very sloppy.

At the first installment of WVTC Gold, an openweight tournament featuring the Council's best fighters, he was upset by Russian Andrian Mizirov. Mizirov couldn't miss and TKO'd him in under a minute with several power punches. Ruas hasn't lost since then, with ten consecutive wins over 3 years. Ruas' first five wins all came by rear-naked choke. His first knockout win came against Cira Robinett on his 12th fight. He has improved his striking defense since the loss to Mizirov, taking less power punches even from gifted strikers like Gace Mange, Yafeu Gaia and Tacito Guedes, all of whom he submitted.

Ruas entered WVTC Gold 2 as the second seed on the strength of his winning streak. He dispatched light heavyweight Hieronimo Andrada in the first round, outstriking him and winning a unanimous decision. Then he submitted defending Gold champion Terrell Hutzel in two minutes, dropping him and then locking in an armbar. In the final, Ruas dominated and submitted another light heavyweight, Primitivo Rocha. While Rocha was much smaller, he had beaten two bigger fighters to get to the final using his incredible ground skills. However, he was no match for Ruas. Ruas made Rocha tap with 5 seconds left, after a long stretch of dominating on the ground.

Ruas' striking is very sloppy, but he has learned to be more elusive and minimize the damage he takes. He has decent power, which helps him drop fighters. His ground game is good if not great but he has great wrestling and takedowns.
