New NCAA History

Recommended Posts

I'm back! You may remember me as the guy who tried to do a Grand Canyon University career twice. The first time I got frustrated as a rookie in the game and the 2nd time disappeared out of nowhere because my computer broke and I lost my file! It is March Madness time and my Richmond Spiders are out of it so I figured I'd start something up again. Like I've said in my previous threads, the biggest reason I do this is so that I can see the history of my file but if anybody ever has any suggestions or comments feel free to do so. I still am pretty new to the game since I have only owned it a year and if any vets have any suggestions I am all ears. In the past I reached a point of frustration and getting burnt out so I'm hoping this is something I can do much more long term but sometimes at a slower pace.

I thought about taking over my Richmond Spiders but I still love the thrill of taking over a low prestige team in an awful conference and seeing if I can make some noise. I made some serious progress last time around and hoping I can learn from the experience and improve on my mistakes.

With that being said I will again be taking over at Grand Canyon University. The year will be the 1938-1939 season which was the first year of the NCAA tournament. We will use the modern 68 team field and also include the NIT, CBI, and CIT. Player ratings will be 1-100 and all the settings are normal. I have imported a coaches file but have edited all wins and losses to 0 for their careers. I have allowed conference movement as well as prestige changes for conferences.

Preview

The Grand Canyon University Antelopes play in the WAC (Western Athletic Conference) and have a prestige of 0 to start out. The conference has 8 teams and is a prestige 1 conference. New Mexico State seems to be the powerhouse but we are hoping we can build something up here and eventually turn the program into a Gonzaga and up the prestige of the entire conference!

Preseason Actions

First up in the offseason is hiring our assistant coaches! This took forever as we could only offer the bare minimum of $30,000 and were constantly being declined. Due to the real coach file it is interesting to see the names that fell. There were so few teams offering big money because so few teams have money, so some of these big time coaches instead had to settle for smaller gigs. I don't expect we will be able to keep them long but it is a HUGE boost. So we actually ended up with better than what we should have gotten. Instead of saying this is unrealistic we will instead say that we were able to attract some big time players since we are transitioning to D1 basketball and are the only for-profit school in the NCAA! I kid you not I offered to probably 24 coaches before one accepted and then it took a few more rounds before we were able to fill out the other 2 spots! With that being said here is our coaching staff for the 1938-1939 season!

Recruiting Director: Phil Martelli

Lead Scout: Rodney Wood

Coaching Assistant: Joe Bobbit

Like I said, these names were not ones I expected. Us being spurned by the bad talent early opened up these opportunities for us. I really hope it doesn't make it too easy to recruit but I think it will give us a bit of a boost which I won't be opposed to. I don't think we will be able to keep them long though! They are all on 2 year deals and after that will pursue much nicer jobs.

Next up is getting the schedule and roster set and that will be coming in the next couple posts.

1938-1939 Team Roster

Here is your roster for the 1938 Grand Canyon Antelopes! We have a lot of locals as the team is made up of 9 players from Arizona, 3 from California, 1 from Oregon, 1 from Washington, and then 1 from Mississippi. This team has 3 scholarship seniors and 3 scholarship juniors which means in 2 years we will be much improved with 6 new players in who are more than just warm bodies! Unfortunately we have 4 scholarship sophomores and 3 freshmen so those 7 scholarships will be on the books for a while. So far the starting lineup has not been decided but I can tell you that it won't be great! We are really looking towards the future here as none of the current players have much potential outside of, in my opinion, PG Odis Deck who has the potential to be a solid starter for us.

Next I want to preview our 20 player call list. We have 3 scholarship players graduating at the end of the season so we will have 3 scholarships available. The 3 seniors we are losing are not all that great and are definitely not the type of talent we are hoping to bring in. Right now with recruiting I'm not going to focus too much on positions and focus on getting the best talent we can. Our recruiting budget is very small with only $6,000 available per month which means we will mostly recruit locally so we can evaluate as many players as possible. Our call list features all of the highly rated guys with High interest and then a lot of guys with very high interest who have put up great stats in highschool and we want to scout further.

1938-1939 Schedule

Here is the schedule for the upcoming season! As you can see we essentially scheduled all of the other terrible teams with low prestige. The only exception is the University of Richmond and I figure why not schedule my alma mater. I'm not expecting much this year. I'd be shocked if we reach double digit wins and am expecting something in the 5-7 win range with a lot of blowout losses.

Here is our starting 5 for the season:

C: Ike Dendy (JR*)

PF: Spencer Ladet (SR)

SF: Rodney Hills (JR*)

SG: Horace Williams (FR*)

PG: Odis Deck (SO)

Odis Deck should be the best player in the lineup and will lead the team. He's an athletic PG who has a decent shot and can handle the ball. His assist numbers won't be great but hopefully he can limit turnovers. Horace Williams has the potential to be a very good outside shooter so we will see how he develops this season. Hills is a solid player once he gets inside and Ladet is mostly around for his defensive prowess. Ike Dendy can't do all that much but shouldn't turn the ball over much.

Bench:

6th - PF Edward Nardone (SR*): Nardone is a solid inside scorer and rebounder. He may be in the lineup at some point this year.

7th - PG James McLeod (SO): McLeod is a pass first PG with no shooting skills, hopefully he can create for others on the team.

8th - PF Tony Rees (SR): Rees doesn't bring much on offense and is mostly a warm body.

9th - SG Tracey Marrs (SO): Marrs can shoot a little but is a huge liability on defense and can't create his own shot, pass, or handle the ball.

10th - SF Cortez Puryear (SF): Puryear probably won't see the court too often and doesn't bring much.

I don't see us going much deeper than this ever! We also had Junior PF Charles Odaniel be deemed academically ineligible. Luckily he was already the last player off the bench so this won't change much! Now it is time to get the season underway! I will be posting monthly updates and keep things updated on recruiting.

Abilene Christian (0-0) vs. Grand Canyon (0-0)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 54, Grand Canyon - 55. We started off very slowly, only scoring 4 points through the first 12 minutes but ended the half strong and down 29-22. We were able to overcome an 11 point deficit and won on a 3 pointer with 22 seconds left! Rodney Hills had 13 points and 6 rebounds while Odis Deck had 12 points and 5 rebounds. Tony Rees led the team in rebounds with 8 off the bench. This one was an absolute shock to win and I am thrilled we came away with the win! We shot 34% from the field to their 40.5% but they turned the ball over 4 more times than us.

November 15, 1938

Grand Canyon (1-0) vs. Incarnate Word (0-1)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 59, Incarnate Word - 63. This one was back and forth but we weren't able to pull out a win once two of our starters fouled out late in the 2nd. We went 29-39 from the free throw line and those missed free throws were big. Odis Deck had 15 points (11-13 from the free throw line) with 5 rebounds. Rodney Hills had 14 points and 5 rebounds. Spencer Ledet had 7 points and 10 rebounds.

November 19, 1938

North Dakota (0-0) vs. Grand Canyon (1-1)

Final Score: North Dakota - 50, Grand Canyon - 51. Man we tried our best to blow this one. Our final 6 possessions consisted of making 3 of 6 free throws and three turnovers. Luckily after back-to-back turnovers North Dakota was unable to win the game at the buzzer. Spencer Ledet had 14 points and 8 rebounds. Rodney Hills had 10 points and 9 rebounds. Ike Dendy had 8 rebounds as well. We had 18 turnovers to North Dakota's 11 so we were able to sneak out a lucky win.

November 22, 1938

Grand Canyon (2-1) vs. SIU Edwardsville (0-3)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 65, SIU Edwardsville - 45. I didn't expect a win this big this season but we shot 55% from the floor and only committed 8 turnovers. Horace Williams had 18 points, while Odis Deck did it all 14 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. Dendy and Ledeet both had 7 rebounds and Rodney Hills had only 2 points but 5 assists.

November 25, 1938

Grand Canyon (3-1) vs. Northern Kentucky (0-3)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 72, Northern Kentucky - 63 in overtime! The refs were whistle happy in the first half as we were called for 16 fouls and Northern Kentucky for 13. Neither of us could take advantage though as we shot 60% from the free throw line and they show 52.2%. We were able to hold a 10 point lead at halftime. The refs didn't change much in the 2nd half as there were a total of 57 fouls called in the game and five players fouled out. Spencer Ledet had 24 points and 9 rebounds and Ike Dendy had 10 rebounds. Rodney Hills had 14 points and Odis Deck had 10. I honestly thought we would lose this game as we committed an ugly 22 turnovers to Northern Kentucky's 14. So far it looks like the schedule of all terrible teams is paying off! But remember now we have 2 wins by 1 point and one win that came down to overtime. We could just as easily only have 1 win.

November 30, 1938

Omaha (0-5) vs. Grand Canyon (4-1)

Final Score: Omaha - 67, Grand Canyon - 75 in overtime! Down 8 points with 50 seconds left we were somehow able to send the game to OT. This even included us committing a turnover with 30 seconds left. Once things got to OT we really turned it on and never looked back. The one thing I like about this team is that they are normally pretty balanced as far as who "the guy" will be for any game. The one problem though is that they normally rely on one player too much during a game. Rodney Hills had 29 points with 7 rebounds in this one in a stellar performance. Odis Deck had 13 points and Edward Nardone had 10 rebounds off the bench. We committed only 15 turnovers in this game but it was still 4 more than Omaha committed. If we can cut down those turnovers we may be able to win a couple conference games.

Unfortunately not much news yet. We had offered scholarships to 2 players but they instead chose Northern Colorado and Cal State Northridge. We are now aggressively pursuing PG Lamar Smith from Arizona who is a great 3 point shooter and could add some great depth on offense. Outside of him we are still doing our due diligence on scouting everyone else.

Grand Canyon (5-1) vs. Bryant (0-5)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 61, Bryant - 60. This was a crazy ending as we fouled Bryant on a buzzer beater layup which obviously makes no sense as they would never attempt a layup while down 3 at the buzzer. BUT we fouled them so they had a shot but missed the free throw to send it to OT! Odis Deck had 14 points, Rodney Hills had 13, and Spencer Ledet had 10. Ledet had 9 rebounds as well. We only had 10 turnovers in this one and that played a huge factor in our win.

December 10, 1938

UMass Lowell (2-4) vs. Grand Canyon (6-1)

Final Score: UMass Lowell - 46, Grand Canyon - 68. I'm shocked we keep winning games but I'll take it! It is amazing that the guys we are recruiting and are highly interested have better current ability than our starters. BUT like I have said before. We play a cupcake schedule which is the only reason we have these wins. Right now I'm just trying to get the school a little bit on the map and raise our prestige up from 0. Spencer Ledet had 15 points and 8 rebounds in this one and Odis Deck had 10 points. Rodney Hills and Horace Williams both had 10 points.

Update: After that win we actually were named in the "others receiving votes" of the Mid-Major top 25 and would have been ranked #36. It seems we are at least getting some attention just from looking at win-loss record and not at the actual scheduling.

December 15, 1938

Grand Canyon (7-1) vs. Maryland Eastern Shore (0-7)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 63, Maryland Eastern Shore - 58. We seemed doomed in this one down 7 with less than 3 minutes to play but 5 turnovers by our opponents in that time span helped us come back and win it. We still committed more turnovers than them in the game but we were able to overcome then. The one thing that does dismay me is that even when we play and beat these other awful teams, we are turning the ball over at an alarming rate compared to them. Rodney Hills had 16 points and 9 rebounds with 4 assists and Spencer Ledet had 17 points and 8 rebounds. Odis Deck had 14 points and Horace Williams had 11.

December 18, 1938

Grand Canyon (8-1) vs. Houston Baptist (1-8)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 72, Houston Baptist - 56. Rodney Hills went off with 20 first half points but sat the entire second half with foul trouble. Spencer Ledet had 15 points and 17 rebounds for the first double-double in school history and the 17 rebounds will probably stand for a long time in the top 10 rebounds in a single game for the school's history. Odis Deck added on 13 points of his own in a game where we shot 61% from the floor and still committed 19 turnovers!

Update: We are #25 in the mid-major top 25! Our RPI is currently 350 which shows our easy schedule but it is nice to get some recognition after the 9-1 start! Our fans will surely be disappointed once we hit conference play. Next up is a match-up with a Richmond team that is 8-0.

December 21, 1938

Grand Canyon (9-1) vs. Richmond (8-0)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 35, Richmond - 74. This one was always going to be rough as I mentioned Richmond is close to being ranked and all our wins have come against teams who have 1 or fewer wins. It started a bit rougher than even I would have guessed though! We went down 21-0 and didn't score our first bucket (a 3) until 7:34 left in the first half and after that shot we were shooting a robust 5.6% from the field! I got a pretty big chuckle out of that since I knew we wouldn't win so I at least got to see some craziness! I feel like Pitt against UVA this year as we were down 37-7 at half. Odis Deck, Horace Williams, and Rodney Hills all had 7 points and Horace Williams had 5 assists.

December 26, 1938

Grand Canyon (9-2) vs. NJIT (0-12)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 65, NJIT - 56. A great bounceback from the Richmond loss as we beat a winless NJIT squad. Spencer Ledet had another double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Rodney Hills had 16 points and 9 rebounds and Horace Williams had 12 points. We have 3 nonconference games left and I'm hoping we can win them to pad our record! Also just a reminder that outside of Richmond the highest prestige any of our opponents have had is 4. The lowest in our conference is 5 and the highest is 60. 5 of our opponents still have not won a game and and 5 others have only one win.

Grand Canyon (10-2) vs. North Carolina Central (1-10)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 70, North Carolina Central - 48. A nice 17-0 run midway through the first half set us up in a nice spot in this one. Spencer Ledet had another amazing game recording a double-double with 13 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists. Horace Williams had 14 points and Rodney Hills had 10. The bench came up big as well with 18 bench points as well.

Grand Canyon (11-2) vs. New Orleans (5-7)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 81, New Orleans - 68. Rodney Hills had 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists and didn't miss a shot. Odis Deck had 19 points and Spencer Ledet had 16. Every started but Ike Dendy (who only had 2 points) scored in double digits and we got out to an early lead in this one. This was the team with the most wins that we've beat this season and seeing that New Orleans had a 5-7 record coming in I was a little bit worried. I still feel like we will do poorly in conference play but since my expectation was a 5-7 win season we have already surpassed that!

Update: We are currently #24 in the mid-major top 25!

January 7, 1939

Howard (1-12) vs. Grand Canyon (12-2)

Final Score: Howard - 54, Grand Canyon - 63. We let a 17 point halftime lead get down to 3 in the second half but we did just enough to hold on for the win. Rodney Hills had 21 points and Spender Ledet had 13. Both players had 8 rebounds. Horace Williams had 16 points and was a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line. This was our final nonconference matchup heading into WAC play.

Update: We are now #22 in the Mid-Major poll! Hopefully this will help our prestige and exposure going into next season. The goal from the Athletic Director was to avoid last place in the conference and I'm hoping we can do that.

January 12, 1939

Grand Canyon (13-2) vs. UT-Rio Grande Valley (2-11)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 49, UT-Rio Grande Valley - 58. We really beat ourselves in this one as Odis Deck fouled out in only 13 minutes and Horace Williams fouled out in 23 minutes. Our backups just couldn't cut it and our opponents took advantage. Spencer Ledet had 15 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double while Rodney Hills had 11 points.

January 14, 1939

Grand Canyon (13-3) vs. Utah Valley (4-10)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 58, Utah Valley - 75. This one was a one possession game until the final 5 minutes when they broke away. Turnovers again have killed us as we committed 12 more than Utah Valley but outplayed them in every other aspect of the game (turnovers are also why we lost our conference opener). We are 328th in the country in forcing turnovers. Spencer Ledet had 15 points and Horace Williams had 11. Tracey Marrs was superb off the bench with a team high 17 points. Marrs was hurt in this one though and will miss a month with a torn abdominal muscle.

January 19, 1939

Chicago State (2-14) vs. Grand Canyon (13-4)

Final Score: Chicago State - 57, Grand Canyon - 73. The refs were on our side in this one, calling 30 fouls on Chicago State and only 13 on us. Rodney Hills had 20 points and 8 rebounds and every starter besides Odis Deck scored in double digits. Deck helped in a different way though with 5 assists.

January 21, 1939

Cal State Bakersfield (4-13) vs. Grand Canyon (14-4)

Final Score: Cal State Bakersfield - 58, Grand Canyon - 72. This was a tale of two halves as we went into the half down 10 and in serious foul trouble. In the second half though it was Bakersfield that got into foul trouble and it helped us get easy buckets and even out the playing field. Rodney Hills was the only starter not in foul trouble early and he kept us in the game with 24 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. Spencer Ledet had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Horace Williams had 10 points but endured a rough night from the floor, shooting 3 for 16.

January 24, 1939

Grand Canyon (15-4) vs. Austin Peay (16-4)

*This is not a conference game.

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 46, Austin Peay - 87. We should have won this game. We committed 24 turnovers and they scored 40 points off those turnovers. They committed 9 turnovers and we scored 2 points off them. We shot 46% from the field which shows we shot better than the 46 points would suggest. But like I have said all season, turnovers are going to be the reason we are awful. I don't know how we turn it over so much but we've only won the turnover battle once so far this season (and it was by one turnover). We also were out-rebounded 44-23. Horace Williams had 11 points and Odis Deck had 10.

January 26, 1939

Grand Canyon (15-5) vs. New Mexico State (13-6)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 32, New Mexico State - 79. We were outclassed by the top team in the conference. They completely outplayed us, shooting 30-67 from the field while we shot 7-35! We committed 10 more turnovers but really there isn't much we can blame this loss on as we were thoroughly outplayed by an amazing opponent. Nobody scored in double digits and only one player had more than 4 rebounds for us.

We have our first recruit! PG Lamar Smith has committed to play for Grand Canyon next year! Smith is from Fountain Hills High School in Fountain Hills, Arizona. He is a 1 star recruit and the #1,802 recruit in the nation and is someone who we hope we can mold into a solid starter. He is a deadly 3 point shooter and is solid handling the ball and passing. He doesn't like to drive at all but the great shooting and ball handling could make him a great 6th man or starter. He even has the potential to be a nuisance on the offensive glass and grab some offensive rebounds. We still have 2 more scholarships left and are hoping we can find 2 players that will be able to play serious minutes for us next season.

Grand Canyon (15-6) vs. Seattle (11-8)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 38, Seattle - 73. Seattle outplayed us badly here as we didn't have much of a chance in this one. They shot 50% from the field and shot a measly 24%. Odis Deck had 14 points and Spencer Ledet had 10. These are the types of games I was expecting in conference play with our inferior roster which is why I'm so happy we did well in out of conference play to pad our record with some free wins.

February 4, 1939

Grand Canyon (15-7) vs. UMKC (8-12)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 60, UMKC - 51. We played well in this one as the bench came up huge in support of our first half foul trouble. We did have a lot of trouble from the free throw line though as we let UMKC stay in it by going 14 for 26. Odis Deck had 14 points and Rodney Hills had 12. Spencer Ledet added on 8 points and 11 rebounds in the win. The bench scored 16 points 4 assists in the win. This is a huge conference win away from home and gives us a little bit of breathing room.

February 9, 1939

Utah Valley (7-15) vs. Grand Canyon (16-7)

Final Score: Utah Valley - 64, Grand Canyon - 56. Our first home loss of the season comes due to our ineptitude on the glass. We allowed 14 offensive rebounds and committed more than double Utah Valley's turnovers. The only reason the scoreline was this close was Utah Valley went 19-31 from the free throw line. Rodney Hills had 12 points and Spencer Ledet had 10 points and 8 rebounds.

February 11, 1939

UT-Rio Grande Valley (3-19) vs. Grand Canyon (16-8)

Final Score: UT-Rio Grande Valley - 49, Grand Canyon - 63. This was a huge win as UT-Rio Grande Valley beat us in our first meeting and it was their only conference win to date. Being able to win this one which is essentially a freebie will really help us in the standings. Rodney Hills had 16 points and Spencer Ledet had 14. Odis Deck added on 13 points of his own and had 4 assists as well. We really limited the turnovers in this one as we only committed 9 and handled the ball well. This win took us to tied in the 4th/5th place spot in the conference.

February 16, 1939

Grand Canyon (17-8) vs. Chicago State (4-19)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 72, Chicago State - 77. This was our must frustrating loss of the season as we lost due to a missed dunk on a fast break after a steal. Those 2 points with one minute left cost us the game. Also, of course, our 14 turnovers to their 9 played a big part. Rodney Hills had 25 points to try to carry us but nobody else seemed interested in the game. Odis Deck had 13 points and was the only other player with a solid statline.

February 18, 1939

Grand Canyon (17-9) vs. Cal State Bakersfield (6-18)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 58, Cal State Bakersfield - 45. This was a HUGE win after our last loss and gets us to 5-6 in conference play! Rodney Hills had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds and no other starter had more than 8 points. Hills really put the team on his back and was able to secure the win for us.

February 13, 1939

New Mexico State (21-6) vs. Grand Canyon (18-9)

Final Score: New Mexico State - 85, Grand Canyon - 64. This was a 6 point game with about 7 minutes left but then New Mexico State went off. They destroyed us on the boards with 12 offensive rebounds and they had 21 assists. The game was close all the way through and it is unfortunate the final scoreline doesn't reflect that. Odis Deck had 15 points and Tracey Marrs had a key 13 points off the bench. This is one we never expected to win so it is encouraging that we made New Mexico State sweat it out a bit. Only 2 games remain on the conference schedule and hopefully we can get a favorable matchup in the conference tournament.

We have our 2nd commit for next season! SG Timothy Swart from Crane High School in Crane, Texas will be joining Grand Canyon University next season! Swart is a great 3 point shooter with the potential to be an elite jump shooter. He doesn't have much of an inside game but he is also a great passer and ball handler. He is also a great defender and has the potential to rack up a lot of steals and block a lot of shots. Just like our other commit Smith he is also active on the boards on offense. Right now the biggest thing I wanted to get for the future was players who could shoot, pass, and ball handle at the guard positions.

Seattle (18-9) vs. Grand Canyon (18-10)

Final Score: Seattle - 61, Grand Canyon - 47. The game was a lot closer than the score shows as Seattle gave us every opportunity but we couldn't take advantage. We had 22 turnovers to their 13 but our 8 missed free throws and they're 6-11 from 3 point range made it impossible for us to mount our comeback. Rodney Hills had 17 points and 6 rebounds and Odis Deck had 7 points and 8 rebounds.

UMKC (11-17) vs. Grand Canyon (18-11)

Final Score: UMKC - 73, Grand Canyon - 71. Man we really blew it in this one. Absolutely horrid play let UMKC win. Even in a game where we "only" committed 13 turnovers UMKC only committed 7. This is one we are going to wish we had back as it was very winnable and we should have taken home the W. Odis Deck had 18 points and Rodney Hills had 13. Ike Dendy had 10 points and 9 rebounds in the losing effort.

We ended up placing 5th in the conference which was better than my expectations coming into the season. Of course I am a bit disappointed given how well we played at points during the season but winning 18 games and going 5-9 in the conference was not what I expected. I didn't expect more than 5-7 wins total.

#5 Grand Canyon (18-12) vs. Utah Valley (11-18)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 48, Utah Valley - 62. This one wasn't as close as the final score indicated. We embarrassed ourselves and this was our worst performance since the Richmond game. 16 turnovers to their 9 killed us as always and the team shot 14 3's (only made 3) and I wish there was a setting to not shoot a single 3 even if you're wide open! We're very bad at them but the team still jacks them up even though I have the 3 point usage on 0. Rodney Hills had 12 points and 7 rebounds.

The conference final was a thriller with UMKC getting the auto-bid to the NCAA tournament with a 1 point victory over New Mexico State!

1938-1939 Season Wrapup

In the WAC Rodney Hills was named to the 1st-team all-conference team! He was the only non-senior to make the team. Hopefully he can improve in his senior season as we will surely need his contributions with Spencer Ledet graduating. With 2 other big men graduating he will probably be asked to shift to PF next season.

March Madness!

Here are the screenshots of how the inaugural NCAA tournament went. Which school will take home the trophy for the first time?

First up is the West Region.

<a href="https://imgur.com/62rbdLl"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/62rbdLll.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

This region didn't see many first round upsets as 12 seed Michigan beat 3 seed Xavier by 3 points and 11 seed Marquette beat 6 seed Arkansas by 9. The 2nd round got pretty crazy though as 9 seed Louisville took down 1 seed Kansas to advance to the Sweet Sixteen. 12 seed Michigan followed suit by beating 4 seed UCLA by 17 points. 11 seed Marquette took down 3 seed Ohio State by 1 point in a close matchup. 12 seed Michigan beat 9 seed Louisville to advance to the Elite 8 where they lost to 2 seed Pittsburgh.

Next up is the Midwest Region!

<a href="https://imgur.com/jn0AE3Q"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/jn0AE3Ql.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

There was a big first round upset as 14 seed Miami (OH) took down 3 seed Kentucky! Unfortunately Miami (OH) lost to 6 seed Michigan State by 38 in the next round. 10 seed Missouri State took it to 7 seed Temple as well with a 9 point victory. 5 seed Duke beat 1 seed Illinois by 23 points to advance to the Elite 8 to face 6 seed Michigan State who beat 2 seed Texas by 2 points. It was a close one but the 6 seed Michigan State took down 5 seed Duke to punch their ticket to the Final Four!

Next we have the South Region!

<a href="https://imgur.com/yInCB7t"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/yInCB7tl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

Not a single upset in the first round in this region! But in the second round 7 seed Wisconsin beat 2 seed Arizona and 6 seed Mississippi State beat 3 seed Villanova. 1 seed Notre Dame beat 5 seed Memphis and 6 seed Mississippi State beat 7 seed Wisconsin to advance to the Elite Eight. Mississippi State won by 2 to be the 3rd team to advance to the Final Four!

<a href="https://imgur.com/S2CGjCO"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/S2CGjCOl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

This region features the WAC representative UMKC! They won their play-in game against Coppin State by 16 but were slaughtered by Syracuse in the first round. This region only featured one upset by the 9 seed in the first round but the second round was interesting. 9 seed Gonzaga took down 1 seed Syracuse in the second round and 5 seed Utah State took down 4 seed Dayton. 9 seed Gonzaga advanced to the Elite 8 where they took on 3 seed Tennessee. Tennessee won that game and advanced to the Final Four!

Time for the Final Four!

<a href="https://imgur.com/GSVEh5b"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/GSVEh5bl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

No 1 seeds made it in the inaugural season. Instead we see a 2 seed, 3 seed, and two six seeds! In our first semifinal game 2 seed Pittsburgh beat 6 seed Mississippi State by 3 points. In the second semifinal 6 seed Michigan State beat 3 seed Tennessee to set up our championship game! Pittsburgh took care of business in the final to be crowned the inaugural NCAA Champions! Congratulations to Pittsburgh on the achievement!

We ended the year 18-13 which was SO much better than I could have ever expected. I just want this to serve as a reminder that we had a ton of close nonconference games and we could have easily lost 5-6 of the games we won. Also remember we were playing the lowest quality teams we could find. Hopefully this season goes a long way towards the long journey of building up the prestige of our program, and there is no way a winning season can hurt us moving forward.

Enoch Scull was a late signee so I want to give a little bit of a preview on him. He is a Point Guard and a 2 star prospect from Corrigan, Texas. He was a bit expensive to pursue but we love the potential. Scull is an athletic guard who is a competent scorer and great defender. He is an average ball handler and not an amazing distributor so he may be asked to play SG instead of leading the offense. We have some depth at guard now so it will be nice to be able to trust that the guards coming off the bench can boost the offense and not be a drain.

1939-1940 Season Preview

Here is the preview for the upcoming season!

Athletic Director Goal

The goal this season is for us to again avoid last place in the conference. Our prestige went up to 1 this offseason which is nice to see. I was hoping we may be able to increase it a bit with the winning record but it is better to see a small rise than no rise at all.

Schedule

We were a little more ambitious this year with our scheduling. We still have a lot of low prestige and bad teams but we again scheduled Richmond and also added on teams in bigger conferences in Fordham and Evansville. I tried to target a few teams that were higher prestige but coming off terrible seasons so that the matchup will look better for us.

I feel so much better about the roster this year than I did last year. We have very little depth in the frontcourt but should be fine playing smaller players a little out of position due to the quality, or lack thereof, in our conference. We will have 3 freshmen playing major minutes and we will see how that ends up working out. If we are getting beat on defense often we may have to shift everyone back to their more natural position. The biggest problem with this is it would mean Charles Odaniel would need to start.

EDIT: Before the season started I decided to instead play the players at their natural position which pushed Odaniel to PF and every other player moved "down" one position.

Recruiting News

It is still preseason but unfortunately we have already had 3 players decline our scholarship offers. PG Don Dunagan who we identified as a stud prospect instead committed to Southern Utah and two C's turned us down in order to attend UT-Rio Grande Valley and Boise State.

North Dakota (0-0) vs. Grand Canyon (0-0)

Final Score: North Dakota - 38, Grand Canyon - 63. This was a dream start to the season as we had a solid performance and held North Dakota to only 38 points! Timothy Swart had a stellar debut with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals and was named player of the game. Enoch Scull was amazing as well in his first game with 17 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 3 steals. Lamar Smith made his debut as well and had 0 points but 3 rebounds and 1 assist. Rodney Hills had 8 points and 12 rebounds. It is so nice to have a bench with reliable players as Odis Deck had 11 points and Horace Williams had 8 points for 19 bench points.

November 14, 1939

Grand Canyon (1-0) vs. Richmond (0-0)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 45, Richmond - 80. The game was close early on but we were outscored 38-16 in the second half and only scored 2 points in the first 10 minutes of the half. It was a fun game to watch but got out of hand with their 17 offensive rebounds (to our 15 defensive rebounds). Rodney Hills had 12 points and Odis Deck had 9 off the bench. We were never going to win this one but was hoping for a result closer to what we had in the first half.

November 18, 1939

Abilene Christian (0-0) vs. Grand Canyon (1-1)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 52, Grand Canyon - 44. This one was a really bad loss to take as we just played terribly. Despite playing a big lineup we were outrebounded again. I am really considering going small since we are going to lose the rebounding battle anyways. Right now our obvious kryptonite is our big men as we have absolutely no talent there. Rodney Hills had 13 points and Enoch Scull was injured and will thankfully only miss 9 days.

Injury News: Enoch Scull will play in our next game. He is day to day and at 87%.

November 22, 1939

Grand Canyon (1-2) vs. Northern Kentucky (2-2)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 46, Northern Kentucky - 64. This team is terrible so I've decided to just sim through games instead of watching them. Atrocious team that cannot rebound. They had 12 offensive rebounds to our 17 defensive rebounds. How can a team win when they play that badly. Simply put, they can't. Grand Canyon is proving why they have 1 prestige as no players are hustling and are embarrassing the program. They also shot 34% and allowed the opponent to shoot 54%. Let that sink in. With how we are playing right now I would be surprised if we win another game this season. We can barely score 40 points.

November 25, 1939

Grand Canyon (1-3) vs. Northern Arizona (1-1)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 60, Northern Arizona - 68. Another bad loss here as we shot 34% to their 55%. Rodney Hills had 12 points and Timothy Swart had 16 but it didn't matter since we can't rebound. This season may be a very fast sim.

Grand Canyon (1-5) vs. SIU-Edwardsville (0-7)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 52, SIU-Edwardsville - 41. We were able to win this one but really didn't play well. After this game I am going to take Odaniel out of the starting lineup and we will play small ball. Ike Dendy had 14 points and 10 rebounds while Odis Deck had 13 points.

December 12, 1939

Grand Canyon (2-5) vs. Florida Atlantic (5-1)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 66, Florida Atlantic - 65 IN OVERTIME. It was fitting that our free throw shooting let us down (12-20 during the game) but was the reason we won as Enoch Scull made two free throws with 21 seconds left to give us the lead. Scull ended the game with 22 points and 3 assists and Timothy Swart had 13 points and 4 assists. Florida Atlantic has a very good record so I was surprised to see us win but perhaps the smaller lineup has helped or maybe the team has just started to mesh together better.

December 16, 1939

Grand Canyon (3-5) vs. Loyola Marymount (6-3)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 54, Loyola Marymount - 44. This one was low scoring and we were able to edge out the win despite going 4-19 from 3. Rodney Hills put the team on his back with a double-double, recording 13 points and 11 rebounds. Enoch Scull had another good game with 12 points and we were able to get 11 points from the bench.

December 20, 1939

UMass Lowell (2-8) vs. Grand Canyon (4-5)

Final Score: UMass Lowell - 82, Grand Canyon - 74. It is hard to be upset about this one because the team fought back from down 20 at the half to make it a one possession game with only 2 minutes left, but they still played pretty poorly when looking at the numbers. The difference maker was our 15 turnovers to their 6 and going 24-38 from the free throw line. Timothy Swart had 13 points and both Enoch Scull and Odis Deck had 12. We got 27 points off the bench as they came up huge and were instrumental in the attempted comeback.

Grand Canyon (4-6) vs. Fordham (2-7)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 83, Fordham - 70. It seemed like we couldn't miss in this one, going 12-18 from 3. Enoch Scull had 24 points and had an amazing game. Rodney Hills and Timothy Swart both had 11 points and the bench again came up big with 25 points. It is so nice to be able to have a little more faith in the bench this year and know that they can come in and contribute.

Grand Canyon (5-6) vs. North Carolina Central (2-10)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 69, North Carolina Central - 49. Enoch Scull had another great game racking up 20 points to lead the way. The rest of the team played a secondary role and the points were spread out pretty evenly including 24 points from the bench. This one was a really nice win and although it wasn't flashy it was a comfortable win.

Incarnate Word (3-9) vs. Grand Canyon (6-6)

Final Score: Incarnate Word - 63, Grand Canyon - 61 IN OVERTIME. George Snelling of Incarnate Word had the best performance ever against us with 25 points and 15 rebounds. I kid you not, we lost this game because of a made 3 and then a technical foul from taunting which gave Incarnate Word 2 free throws to win the game. Rodney Hills had 12 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double and Timothy Swart had 14 points. Enoch Scull was disappointing with only 8 points on 3-11 shooting from the field. Also Odis Deck left this game with an injury and will miss 9 days with a sprained knee. The injury is day-to-day so we will chance him in our next game.

January 4, 1940

Grand Canyon (6-7) vs. Evansville (2-12)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 61, Evansville - 64. We lost this game from a charge on our final possession and committed more turnovers in the final 5 minutes than the previous 35 minutes. Every single player, starter and bench player, was in foul trouble and it was a truly horrific game. If we could make free throws we'd probably only have 2 losses this year but our inability to do so has been the main cause of our struggles. Lamar Smith had 14 points off the bench and Timothy Swart had 11 points. Also the fact that our Center can't rebound is a big problem.

January 8, 1940

Omaha (0-15) vs. Grand Canyon (6-8)

Final Score: Omaha - 54, Grand Canyon - 67. Timothy Swart had 17 points and Rodney Hills had 18 points and 8 rebounds in the victory. The bench didn't play as big a role in this one with only 9 points but the starters were able to take care of business in our final game before conference play. This was definitely our easiest matchup of the year and is one I am happy to see that we won.

January 13, 1940

Chicago State (4-10) vs. Grand Canyon (7-8)

The bench came up huge in this one as the starters only had 14 points in the first half but the bench put up 21. Odis Deck picked up 2 fouls on the first defensive possession of the game and picked up his 3rd as soon as he came back in the game later in the first which opened up big minutes for the bench. Deck had a huge turnaround in the second half though, ending with a team high 15 points. The bench only had 3 points in the second half so his contribution was huge. Rodney Hills and Timothy Swart both had 10 points and 5 rebounds. We got to the line often in this one and going 25-33 on free throws helped immensely as we took advantage of the free points. It is really nice to start out conference play! Oh also a fun fact...New Mexico State is the only team that goes into conference play in the WAC with a winning record.

January 18, 1940

UMKC (5-11) vs. Grand Canyon (8-8)

Final Score: UMKC - 67, Grand Canyon - 64. We got into foul trouble in the first half with 14 fouls but the bench came up big again scoring 17 of our 33 points in the first half. We had 29 fouls called on us and two starters didn't even reach 14 minutes because of it. We lost though because Lamar Smith missed a free throw to tie the game with 5 seconds left as our free throw shooting again let us down. We haven't had foul trouble all season and now in 3 straight games we've had almost the entire team in huge foul trouble. Lamar Smith had 14 points off the bench, Timothy Swart had 11, and Rodney Hills had 10 (despite fouling out in 11 minutes).

January 20, 1940

Cal State Bakersfield (4-12) vs. Grand Canyon (8-9)

Final Score: Cal State Bakersfield - 79, Grand Canyon - 86. This one was an absolute thriller as Wilford Albin of Cal State Bakersfield had 35 points but was outdueled by Rodney Hills who had 30 points and 6 rebounds. We had 21 assists which is the most we've ever had as a team. Lamar Smith had 13 points, Timothy Swart had 12, and Odis Deck had 11. Deck also had 6 assists and Enoch Schull had 5 assists to make up for scoring only 3 points. It was another horrid night from the free throw, going 12-21.

January 25, 1940

Grand Canyon (9-9) vs. Seattle (7-11)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 70, Seattle - 75. Absolutely pathetic game. Feel like I say this all the time but an absolute embarrassment to the program. 19 turnovers. Absolutely pathetic performance. I don't mind when we lose but when we show no heart and just give the game away it is a bad look for a program that is trying to build itself up and not be the laughingstock of the sport.

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 51, UT Rio Grande Valley - 48. This one was a real grind but we were able to overcome 16 turnovers. Rodney Hills had 12 points and 8 rebounds and Enoch Scull had 11 points. Timothy Swart had 10 points and 6 rebounds. This one was a really big win away from home

We have our first commit for next season! C Adolph Gentry from Odessa, Texas will be playing for Grand Canyon next season! Gentry is a 1 star prospect and the #1,189 overall recruit. He is already more advanced than Ike Dendy and has a solid inside game as well as being a strong rebounder. He will most likely see a starting role next season with Dendy, Hills, Odaniel, and Puryear graduating.

Utah Valley (6-13) vs. Grand Canyon (10-10)

Final Score: Utah Valley - 61, Grand Canyon - 45. We were outplayed and only shot 30% from the field. Utah Valley committed more turnovers than they had shots made in the first half but still had an 11 point lead at the half. Rodney Hills had 17 points and only one other player topped 5 points. Rough outing and we are still yet to beat Utah Valley in what was our 4th try in program history.

New Mexico State (19-3) vs. Grand Canyon (10-11)

Final Score: New Mexico State - 77, Grand Canyon - 71. We really should have won this game but committed a ridiculous 22 turnovers (2nd most in school history) to their 15. We were down 2 points late in the game so the -7 turnover differential cost us dearly. On top of that we went 16-22 from the free throw line including missing 4 front end of 1 and 1s. This one was very winnable but the nail in the coffin was Ike Dendy going 0 for 7 but continuing to shoot late in the game despite really having no offensive skillset at all. Odis Deck had 16 points and Lamar Smith had 15. Rodney Hills had 14 and fouled out and Enoch Scull had 10. It was encouraging to know that we could at least hang with New mexico State and play them close.

February 10, 1940

Grand Canyon (10-12) vs. Chicago State (6-16)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 56, Chicago State - 80. This is another candidate for most embarrassing loss in program history. We play a 20-3 team until the final minute but lose by 24 against a 6 win team. We went 4-23 from 3 which is inexplicable as well as 18-27 on free throws. After the performances this season I think we're probably about four decades away from any relevance. Our prestige may have risen but we're closer to moving down to D2 than anything else.

Grand Canyon (10-13) vs. Cal State Bakersfield (8-15)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 52, Cal State Bakersfield - 59. We had this one won but Cal State Bakersfield had second chance points on 3 straight possessions to steal a win from us. They committed more turnovers than us but we still committed 15 and shot 33% to their 49%. Enoch Scull had 13 points and Rodney Hills had 11. After this loss I firmly believe that we are the worst team in the country and I'm not sure if we can even improve on this.

Grand Canyon (10-14) vs. UMKC (9-16)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 48, UMKC - 63. We only committed 9 turnovers this game but of course UMKC committed even fewer with 6. We shot 36% and they shot 51% so we never had much of a chance. Ike Dendy led the team in points so you know it had to be a bad one. He had 11. I'm so amazed that a team that has improved so much talent wise can play so much worse.

UT-Rio Grande Valley (7-18) vs. Grand Canyon (10-15)

Final Score: UT-Rio Grande Valley - 57, Grand Canyon - 49. It took us 15 minutes to have more points (9) than fouls (8). The team has, quite simply, given up. If any of them want to transfer I'll grant their request and I'm hoping a majority of them will so I can get some good players into the program. Unfortunately I think they know they're D3 quality players. Rodney Hills had 19 points and 13 rebounds but don't be deceived, he took 17 shots. We shot 26% and they shot 51%. We haven't had this problem all year so the fact it is happening now against awful teams shows that the team has given up which is pretty cool that they code that into the game.

Seattle (11-15) vs. Grand Canyon (10-16)

Final Score: Seattle - 57, Grand Canyon - 66. Of course we win the game I sim past instead of watching. Enoch Scull had 13 points and Timothy Swart had 11. It looks like we played pretty poorly but Seattle simply played worse. We finally won the turnover battle but only by two as we committed only 8 turnovers.

Grand Canyon (11-16) vs. Utah Valley (9-18)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 65, Utah Valley - 45. We only shot 39% from the field but Utah Vallley shot a putrid 21%. They had 7 more turnovers than shots made. Rodney Hills had 14 points and both Lamar Smith and Ike Dendy had 11 points. Hills also had 10 rebounds for the double-double. With only one game left in the season only TWO teams in the WAC have a winning record.

Recruiting News

No recruiting news but a little bit of team news. Charles Odaniel was injured in our last game and will miss 25 games with a dislocated knee. Also we have 3 unhappy players: Tracey Marrs, Omar Backman, and Marvin Davis. These are players who I hope will transfer and open up scholarships for players we can use!

Grand Canyon (12-17) vs. UMKC (12-17)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 63, UMKC - Grand Canyon - 66 IN OVERTIME. If the AI had an inkling of a brain we would have won but unfortunately it does not. It inexplicably played the bench more than the starters despite no foul trouble and didn't call a timeout to stop a 12-0 UMKC run on 6 straight turnovers with the backups in. Absolutely terrible stuff here. Down by over 16 we were able to take it to OT but the AI lost us the game, plain and simple.

New Mexico State predictably won the tournament and absolutely destroyed every team along the way.

Here is how the 1939-1940 season went!

March Madness!

March Madness 1939-1940

It is time for the NCAA Tournament!

<a href="https://imgur.com/904pFqI"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/904pFqIl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

First up we have the West Region! There were zero upsets in the first round although 13 seed Montana did give 4 seed Miami a scare. The only upset in the second round was 6 seed Kansas over 3 seed Dayton. In the Elite 8 1 seed Arizona took down Miami and Kansas took down 2 seed Nevada. Arizona destroyed Kansas, doubling their score, to advance to the Final Four!

<a href="https://imgur.com/9dx3Jzy"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/9dx3Jzyl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

Next up is the Midwest Region! This region featured our first ever 15 seed upsetting a 2 seed! 15 seed Akron beat 2 seed Gonzaga by 4 to advance to the second round! 10 seed Detroit also took down 7 seed Duke to advance. Detroit took down Akron to advance to the Sweet 16 but then they lost to 6 seed Marquette. 4 seed Tennessee took down 1 seed Illinois to advance to the Elite 8 as well. Tennessee then beat Marquette to advance to the Final Four! WAC representative New Mexico State lost to 5 seed Utah State by 9 in the first round.

<a href="https://imgur.com/SiPmDcX"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/SiPmDcXl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

Now we have the South Region! 10 seed Texas Tech took down 7 seed Syracuse before losing to 2 seed Xavier. Also on that side of the bracket 14 seed East Tennessee State took down 3 seed UNLV by 2 points and 11 seed Louisville took down 6 seed Ohio State after winning the play-in game against Utah. Louisville advanced to the Sweet 16 where they lost to Xavier. The region ended up boring as Xavier beat 1 seed UNC to advance to the Final Four!

<a href="https://imgur.com/W4wkkNY"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/W4wkkNYl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

Last we have the East Region! 11 seed Maryland beat 6 seed Creighton in the first round and 12 seed Hofstra beat 5 seed UAB to cap the first round upsets. Maryland then took down 3 seed Wake Forest and 7 seed BYU took down 2 seed West Virginia. In the Sweet 16 BYU beat Maryland and 4 seed Villanova topped 1 seed Kentucky. BYU beat Nova by 17 to be the final team in the Final Four.

<a href="https://imgur.com/tvfljxc"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/tvfljxcl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

In the Final Four matchups Xavier beat Arizona and BYU beat Tennessee. Xavier then beat BYU in the national championship by the score of 99-87! BYU made a great run as a 7 seed but came up just short.
