Prologue (Part 1)

The Stone family simply wasn’t as close as it used to be.

It started in 2011, when Dan Stone Sr. (affectionately called “the Old Man” by his children) officially retired from the family business. (An argument could be made that it started five years before that with Edd...but this is not time and place for that particular story…) For the first few months of his retirement, The Old Man was present at practically every show. He would hold court backstage, sipping red wine from a small juice glass (“it’s good for the heart” he’d say) imparting wisdom and sharing stories with the younger generation. As the years wore on, and age continued to set in, the Old Man began appearing less and less, content in the knowledge that his son Jeremy and daughter Victoria had things well in hand.

Around the same time, Dan Jr., the face of the franchise and one of the hardest working men in pro-wrestling, was significantly slowed by a string of injuries. Junior began gradually reducing his schedule shifting many of his dates and prominent matchups to his brother Duane. In the summer of 2015, Dan Stone Jr. wrestled his final match--a spectacular bout that saw him pinning his rival Steve DeColt one final time. Unlike his father, Junior was not be found hanging out backstage or occasionally showing up at the company office--Dan Jr. was tired of being on the road. He nestled himself in rather comfortably running The House of Stone--perhaps the premiere wrestling dojo in the world.

So, without Edd, the Old man, and now Junior., it was only Duane, Jeremy and Victoria (and of course her husband Sean) grinding out the days--running Canada’s number one wrestling organization. With Jeremy running the business side of things, Victoria handling booking duties, and Duane fighting the wear and tears of a slowing in-ring career, the 3 siblings hardly found time to chat about anything outside of business any more. Their conversations were short and to the point--and the family bonding of a young generation of siblings living an exciting life on the road with their famous father was now officially a bygone era.

That bygone era suddenly sparked to life on Thanksgiving of 2015 (Canadian Thanksgiving that is…). The entire family, even Edd (who had began showing some signs of maturity over his last few years away), had gathered at the Old Man’s property on Prince Edward Island. The Old Man was liberally dispensing wine to all of his children and their spouses. With the grandchildren either playing video games in the basement or playing outside; Edd, Duane, Jeremey, Victoria, Junior and their spouses had all gathered around the long dining room table sharing stories and laughing at events twenty years past.

In much the same way a dropped glass will bring a chatty restaurant to quick and replete silence, Victoria's soft voice shook the family. She had waited for a intermittent lull in the conversation--that quick moment in between topics when she could insert herself and her message. Her voice was serious, and slightly shaking. “Well, since we are all here and I’m not sure when that will happen again, I want to share some news with you all.” The Old Man, slightly emboldened by the wine, smiled encouragingly at his only daughter as the rest of the family looked on stoically. Sean reached up and placed an assuring hand on her arm.

She continued after clearing her throat. “Well, a few weeks ago I was in the shower and I... discovered something..." She stopped to gather herself, blinking away tears welling up in her eyes. "I guess the best word for it would be a lump...Sean and I have been to a couple of different doctors now and I’ve had a variety of tests but they say it’s cancer.”

Her words hung in the air, filling the room.

It was Junior who cried out, the first to react. “Oh Vic...I’m so sorry!” Duane got out of his chair and headed over to his sister for an embrace.

Victoria held her hand up, stopping him in his tracks. “No...no sorry's. They’ve told me this thing is treatable and you better believe that I’m going to fight this with everything I got.” She brushed a tear from her cheek and showed a resolute face. “The only sorry I have is for Jeremy..." She looked at her steely, hardened brother. "I’m sorry, Jeremy but I need to give up the book.”

Jeremy was nodding appreciatively. His eyes were glossy with tears. “Please Vic...that’s the last thing any of us are worried about. We’ll get someone to keep the seat warm for you...”

OOC: This story is one I've had in my head for some time (long before the latest news regarding Roman Reigns). I've often hesitated to tell it, for fear that I couldn't do it justice. However it kept pushing me on in my brain and I've been getting an itch to try my hand at diary writing again.

In the interest of full disclosure, I have been very fortunate in my life that I have not been personally affected by cancer all that much. I have never seen that battle up close, either personally or with a loved-one. That said, there are people close to me who suffer from other chronic illnesses and in general, I am all too familiar with how profound sickness to can shake a family to it's core.

That's the story I am interested in telling here. I see this project as a mix of a traditional TEW diary but also a drama with characters living in this crazy world that is pro wrestling. I've taken a lot inspiration from some great diary writers (JamesCasey, Eisen-Verse, Asaemon, Beejus, TFC, Voeltzwagon, NoNeck, and 3rdStringPG just to name a few...). You might see some of there influences on this project as I tell this hybrid wrestling/family drama story.

Also, thank you to all the wonderful graphic makers within the GDS community for posting your images to share. I wish I did a better job organizing/labeling/remembering who did what render so I could give them all proper shout outs. Sorry about that guys...

Prologue (Part 2)

November 2015

The Friedman Building

Call time for Total Wrestling was usually 90 minutes before first bell, but “Straight Shooter” Joel Bryant always was one of the first people to arrive at the building, a holdover from his days as booker for the promotion. Since passing the role onto Brent Hill when Tommy Cornell sold the company, Bryant often found his previously hectic schedule a lot more loose...maybe even boring. Bryant first poked in on catering, hoping maybe he could grab a quick bite before the rest of the boys got there. Unfortunately the spread was still being set up. Bryant absently scratched the back of his head still not used to downtime. Feeling a bit of stubble, Joel headed toward the locker room figuring he’d jump in the shower and shave his head.

“Shooter!” Bryant turned his head to find his old tag team partner and good friend Robert Oxford barking his name.

“Hey Ox. What’s going on my man?” The two exchanged a light handshake.

Oxford raised his eyebrows highlighting the deeping lines on his face. “Kyle wants to see you right away.”

Bryant grunted. “Principal’s office, huh? What did I do now?” Oxford shrugged and headed off.

The door to Kyle Rhodes’ office was open, but the auburn haired executive appeared pretty engrossed in something on his iPad. Bryant rapped on the door politely and Rhodes looked up. “Hey Shooter. Come on in.” Rhodes jumped from his chair and shook Joel’s hand warmly and gestured for him to sit, shutting the door behind them. Kyle had been cordial and respectful enough with Joel Bryant...but there was no splitting hairs--Kyle’s first move as new CEO of TCW had been to fire Joel as head booker. Things had been frosty ever since.

Rhodes had come back around the desk and looked across as the veteran hand. “So I received an interesting phone call last night from Jeremy Stone.” Rhodes face contorted in a half-frown. “Victoria has to step down from booker. Cancer.”

“Oh man.” Bryant exclaimed with a sigh.

“Yeah...it’s too bad. But the reason they called me is they want to talk to you about taking over the book up there.”

“Oh...really? I still got another 16 months on my deal here though.”

Rhodes face was rigid. “Look Joel, you’re not happy here. I know that. You’re a natural booker. You want to talk to the Stones? Go ahead. I’ll grant you a release. Quite honestly, I don’t need the publicity that TCW wouldn’t help out Victoria Stone-McFly when she was stricken with cancer…”

Bryant said nothing as he digested Rhodes’ words. Was this asshole actually worried about the PR of this?

Kyle Rhodes continued. “Here’s Jeremy’s contact information.” Rhodes slid a sticky note over the Bryant. Rhodes then turned around in his wheely office chair and grabbed a manila folder from the table behind and laid it on the desk. “Here’s the release. I just need you to sign here and here.” Rhodes had already marked the forms with an X.

Joel looked down at the document. The bastard had wasted no time in drawing everything up. Signing this release was pissing away his salary for the next 16 months. “Are you firing me Kyle?”

“It’s a win/win Shooter. I’d rather not carry your salary and you’re looking at getting buried down the card here. It’s a new era here. Take the job up north. You’ll be happier…”

“Straight Shooter” Joel Bryant signed his release and left the office without a word more.

Gray. Everything look gray. It was as if somebody put some kind gray film over “Straight Shooter” Joel Bryant’s eyes as he adjusted to his new surroundings. It was a stark contrast to sunny and warm California that he left. None of that helped how frustrated Bryant by the whole situation. While he sympathized with situation the Stone family had found themselves in, the reality was that they caused him his job with TCW and he had no guarantee of a new one here. The only number that Rhodes had given him was for the NOTBPW office, not even a direct line to Jeremy.</div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Luckily the secretary, Betty, had been expecting his call and made travel arrangements to fly him in. Bryant kept fidgeting with his large coat that lay folded across his arms as he paced in the small waiting room. He stopped and studied an old black and white publicity photo of “The Strangler” Ed Henson, snarling and raising his fist.“Hey Shooter! Sorry to keep you waiting.” A gravelly voice broke Joel’s reverie.</div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Bryant turned to find Jeremy Stone coming down a hallway with his hand extended. Stone still looked in great shape and made an impressive figure wrapped in flannel and denim. “Really wish we could’ve got ya’ here sooner...I’ve been swamped here.” Bryant nodded, shaking his hand lightly and let himself be led into a small conference room. </div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Once settled at the table, Jeremy poured them both some coffee and continued. “I didn’t realize they’d release you Joel. I want you to know that upfront. I just called to ask if we could talk...I figured you’d have the choice to request your release if you liked what we have to say.”</div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Bryant took a long sip of the hot coffee and tried to decide if he was being worked or not before deciding that it didn’t really matter--he needed to do business or he’d leave here jobless. “Don’t worry about Jeremy. We’ve got a win/win here. You need a booker and I need a job.”</div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Jeremy smiled. “Look, we think you did good work under Cornell and we need help here. Vikki left me a roadmap to get me through the end of the month.” Jeremy laid out a file on the table. “After that, it’s up to you. We got the Henson Memorial Cup coming up and booking that sucker is a bear and I simply don’t have the time to do it right.” He slid the folder to me. </div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

I took the folder but set it aside without opening it. “Jeremy, I’m going to want some freedom to do my own thing if I’m coming in. I’m not Victoria and I might want to emphasize some different guys or aspects of the sport. Is that going to be a problem?”</div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Jeremy rubbed his chin and took a sip of coffee before answering. “Well Joel, that depends on what they are and how good of a pitchman you are. I’m open to hearing anything you’ve got to say...but at the same time this company is my family’s legacy and their are certain expectations that go along with that. I’m going to need you to respect that.”</div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

Joel nodded. His assent. “Understood. That mean I got the job?”</div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;"> </div><p><span style="font-family:'Book Antiqua';"><span style="font-size:14px;"></span></span></p><div style="margin-left:25px;">

December 2015

New Brunswick

Joel Bryant had left Jeremy Stone’s office both encouraged and hesitant. Stone had seemed fair and straightforward enough, but Joel was still concerned about butting heads with Victoria’s previously laid out plans. If the Stones were going to be inflexible about the product, than this was going to be a bad match.

Bryant had set himself up at the free continental breakfast the hotel NOTBPW had put him up in. It wasn’t the Taj Mahal, but the flight from LA to St. John had left him tired enough that he got a decent enough night’s sleep. The former TCW booker was combing through Victoria’s plans at the breakfast table. He was supposed to head over to meet with Victoria and Sean McFly later in the morning and thought it’d be a good idea to familiarize himself with what they’ve been doing.

Looks like the main event scene was three-way issue between new champion Tim Westybrook, Duane Stone and perennial heel Steve DeColt. Joel had met Duane once before, but only knew the other two by reputation. The secondary program was battle of one-upmanship between Sean McFly and Johnny Bloodstone--no doubt there was money to be made in that pairing. Joel was interested to see what McFly’s plans were heading into the new year. With Victoria’s illness, Bryant wouldn’t be surprised to see McFly take a leave of absence. The other significant story featured Sean Deely fending off Owen Love and “the Natural” Damian Carvill. Again, these were guys that Joel only really knew by reputation. Until Bryant actually got a chance to watch the roster work up close, it was so hard to know what he was dealing with.

Joel’s studying was shortly interrupted by his cell phone ringing--it was Jeremy. “Hey Shooter...I just got off the phone with Sean. We’re going to have to cancel that meeting you had with Vikki today--bad night I guess.”

Joel gave a sympathetic nod. “Sure, sure. I totally understand.”

Jeremy continued. “Here’s what I’ve decided to do. I want you to take that folder home and enjoy the holidays with your loved ones. I’d like to have you back up here the first of the year. Let’s go a month on a trial basis. Follow Victoria’s lead in that folder and we’ll see where we are come the end of January. Betty’s already got you a flight home for this evening. Thanks for coming up Joel and I look forward to working with you.”

“Sounds like a plan Jeremy. Thanks for the opportunity.”

“You bet. Merry Christmas Joel.”

“Merry Christmas.” Joel hung up the phone and sighed.

January 2016

NOTBPW Championship Wrestling

Wolseley Arts Building

Manitoba

Joel Bryant showed 1pm to the Wolseley Arts Building and found Jeremy Stone already hard at work monitoring the production team’s effort to construct the ring and set for tonight’s show. Stone was quick to introduce Bryant to various members of the crew and seemed eager to lighten his own workload onto Joel.

By 3pm, the two found themselves in Jeremy's office looking at the card that Victoria had laid out. It was agreed that Joel wouldn’t change anything for tonight’s show, taking on a bit of agent work as he got his chance to see the workers in action for the first time in person.

The card looked like this:

OOC: I know it took a while to get here, but the next post will be an actual show (albeit from Joel's point of view). Predictions are welcome. I'll get to a contest after I establish a bit more momentum...but for now, any comments are appreciated.

Finally, I am super excited for this. :D

I doubt Cavanagh would lose in a dark match since he is listed as a headliner.

He’s got the look, talent and pedigree to be a foundational piece. Wildside looks to have a lot of upside too (with some real top-notch selling!). Brooke Tyler has the pedigree and million dollar look to be a big star--but she needs seasoning. Allen and Easter are clearly the both more talented and seasoned performers than either Plum or Tyler, but it’s going to be important to get some fresh faces to stir up the division. Westybrook countered Duane Stone’s attempt at a sunset flip by sitting down and holding firm, securing a surprise 3 count. Duane Stone accepted his defeat with a mixture sadness and respect for the new champion, handing over the belt and shaking Westybrook’s hand before heading to the back head sunk low.</p><p> </p><p> The video package revealed that in subsequent weeks, Steve DeColt has antagonized the new champion, calling his win a fluke. Little did I know that The Natural is almost as good. Too bad these guys are on the wrong side of 40.</p><p> </p><p> Overall, the trio played cocky heels beautifully and DeColt really hit home that Duane Stone and Tim Westybrook would not be able to coexist 2 weeks before their championship rematch. The Natural and Owen Love continued to poke fun at rising star, Sean Deeley.</p><p> </p><p> As for the match, the 6 performers told a great story over the course of 26 minutes. The heels got their heat and the tension between Stone and Westybrook was hinted at. The finish came when Westybrook and Duane Stone began to disagree, leaving Deeley outnumbered and vulnerable.</p><p> </p><p> Post match, Stone and Westybrook found themselves in a shoving match and Sean Deeley sold in the ring.
