Heavy Metal

About Metal Music –

Heavy Metal (often referred to simply as metal) is a genre of rock music that developed in the late 1960s and early 1970s, largely in the United Kingdom and the United States. With roots in blues – rock and psychedelic rock, the bands that created heavy metal developed a thick, massive sound, characterized by highly amplified distortion; extended guitar solos, emphatic beats, and overall loudness. Heavy metal lyrics and performance styles are generally associated with masculinity and machismo.

The first heavy metal bands such as Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and Deep Purple attracted large audiences, though they were often critically reviled, a status common throughout the history of the genre. In the mid – 1970s Judas Priest helped spur the genre’s evolution by discarding much of its blues influence; Motörhead introduced a punk rock sensibility and an increasing emphasis on speed. Bands in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal such as Iron Maiden followed in a similar vein. Before the end of the decade, heavy metal had attracted a worldwide following of fans known as “metalheads” or “headbangers”.

In the 1980s, glam metal became a major commercial force with groups like Mötley Crüe. Underground scenes produced an array of more extreme, aggressive styles: thrash metal broke into the mainstream with bands such as Metallica, while other styles like death metal and black metal remain subcultural phenomena. Since the mid – 1990s, popular styles such as nu metal, which often incorporates elements of funk and hip hip; and metalcore, which blends extreme metal with hardcore punk, have further expanded the definition of the genre.

Rhyme1234, your very first post is great. Great songs from all the main power styles. Hats off sir!

Lyrics:

I am the dying apparition

End of your display, too late for regret

Final moments in slow motion

Your foolish choice, trying to amuse

Choking down, blood, air, and mucus

Feel the cost of miscalculation

Boasting and bragging, all but past

Enduring the price, curiosity's last

Wanting to astonish so everyone can see

Attack unworthy foes, no not like me

Petrified pride, the sad fool's terror

Blind-sided and broken, soak in the ignorant failure

Living to intimidate, tormenting the ones you can

Rolling the dice is your fate, unlucky or doomed or dumb

Never wanted to gamble, thought the strength was assured

Then there's an immovable object, your power and unstoppable force

Bitten off more than you could chew

Trying to impress with your primacy

Can't match a level that intense

Shocked to see the outcome unfold

Pushing forward with weakness

Compared to a hardened past a joke

Ran into this ruthless ************

Last time being wronged

Stalking the weak, making the rules

You just realized, I'm the wrong one to **** with

Pushing my buttons, daring a response

Clear regret, the wrong one to **** with

Pain creeping in, blurred mortal wound

Grasp of horror, the wrong one to **** with

Can't change your mind, too late this time

Your life is spent, I was the wrong one to **** with

Thinking the outcome can be in doubt

First and last mistake, beat the arrogance out of him

Don't fear the pain inflicted, warming up idle hands

Knowing the worst is later, solace for the moment

Wrapped in the shame of cowardice, no end is undeserved

Time for atonement's past, exposed, frail fool, that's you

Thinking the outcome can be in doubt

First and last mistake, beat the arrogance out of him

No coins for Charon, unable to cross over worlds

Dumped out in the river, found unworthy to pass now

Cannot hide from past shame, experience what you have earned

Take pride in suffering, paying homage to the dead

No ego present, instead accepting to believe

Fate of the damned, no doubt is your destiny

In my opinion I used always listen to powermetal, including the bands I have listed, it gives me sooooo much energy. The guitars, the vocals, the bands themselves are really really talented. Well metal doesn't have to be a mainstream, and I also think being a mainstream metal band can ruin you in some ways, just look what is happening to "Metallica". On the other hand, being a mainstream artist can gain you popularity, money, and what not. Metal is just simple, you like it, then you like it.

Thank you very much for the support! Lyrics:

Walking down the backstreets

The noon is full and high

You feel your body start to sweat

Someone's about to die

You turn around and run

It's the only thing to do

Someone's about to die

And that someone... is you

Time to run or fight

Off the strike of the beast

You hear the creature's hooves

Start to echo through your brain

You fear the demon's hellish howl

It makes you go insane

You smell the creature's fowl stench

Laced with death and waste

Don't lose your mind he's right behind

Breathing fire in your face

Time to run or fight

Off the strike of the beast

If you fail you'll be

The hellish demon's feast

Black as night he begins his flight

Wings outstretched in the cold

Glowing eyes, he wears no disguise

His evil has yet to be told

Breathing fire the beast is flying higher

Now he swoops down on his prey

All the world a horrid mess

Leaving black earth in decay

The beast prepares for battle

And you prepare to die

The blood running down your throat

Dulls you woeful cry

You can feel the power rage within your soul

When you die you go to hell and live... forevermore

Lyrics:

What has this world come to?

What have we become?

Humanity is lost

Most humans are scum

Can take no more

Can no longer ignore

In anger we rise... Hear our cries!

RISE UP

REVOLT

Our country is so ****ed

Corruption the norm

Revolution is near

Uprising must come

Will take no more

We no longer ignore

Rebellion arise... To defy!

RISE UP

REVOLT

Prepare for war

All our voices will roar

Freedom the prize

Supress the lie

RISE UP

REVOLT!

Lyrics:

Divine creations now destroyed to uncover the haunted atmosphere

Strange visions of the ancient spirits, travesty of man appears

Coldness and the storming winds lurking for prey

The forces of the Winter reign in dreadful way, there's no escape

I'm following the mistress of night

Through the gates of snow we'll fly

We'll fly

Winter, the realm of eternal ice

Snowfall and darkness descends upon the vales of time

Distant caress of the sun's fading light

The lands were painted white with the Winter's might

My hands are frozen, my mind is at the edge of madness

Oh how many nights and days, I've been lost in this land of sadness

I'm following the mistress of night

Through the gates of snow we'll fly

We'll fly

Winter, the realm of eternal ice

Snowfall and darkness descends upon the vales of time

Distant caress of the sun's fading light

The lands were painted white with the Winter's might

From the primitive thoughts, under the glimmering snow

And burning stones (they'll rise)

You don't have to die, you can rule in afterlife

Just concede your soul to me, your life is cheap (no price)

Winter, the realm of eternal ice

Snowfall and darkness descends upon the vales of time

Distant caress of the sun's fading light

The lands were painted white with the Winter's might

Lyrics:

Close your eyes and whisper "goodbye"

You will never see how I cry

I can recall what you said to me once:

"If I leave there will be a sign"

And the twilight will show me tonight

From dusk to dawn, that's when we arise

All souls forlorn, come down from the skies

We're called the mist by the human race

But we do exist in a million ways

Oh, I'm in the twilight world tonight

And I obey the moon

I'm in the twilight world tonight

The mist will dance and the elves will sing their croon

My eyes will not believe the sight

They dance in trance this magic night

The sound that did enchant my ears

I feel my eyes release the tears

I, I know the answer now

To die I am no longer afraid somehow

And now I know that there is another way for me to go

And now they show that there is life in the afterglow

I can feel the presence of the unknown side

The shivers infest my body, this cannot be denied

Oh, I'm in the twilight world tonight

And we obey the moon

I'm in the twilight world tonight

The mist will dance and the elves will sing their croon

No way this can't be a dream...

I pinched my skin to make sure I was awake

What I see might be too much for me to take

The dance in a circle just above the ground

And I can see you and it looks like you're still alive

Somehow you seem so relieved

A nightbird chasing the shadows fly right through your body

And then I know that you don't really exist

You're just a reflection in this midsummer dance

I feel my heart pounding faster ever than before

I must have stopped breathing, the image of you fade

And now I know why had the strong feeling that I must find

This place you once described and to see your final dance

Will we ever meet again?

No!

Oh, they're in the twilight world tonight

And you obey the moon

They're in the twilight world tonight

The mist will dance and the elves will sing their croon

They fade away and so do I

You're gone, I'll always wonder why

You came and made me realize

That you exist there in the twilight sky

Is this a dream or plain reality?

It feels more like a trip to what I never thought I'd see

Suddenly fear took a hold on my mind

I had to move away unless I would go blind

Oh, they're in the twilight world tonight

And you obey the moon

They're in the twilight world tonight

The mist will dance and the elves will sing their croon

I, I know the answer now

To die I am no longer afraid somehow

So I fade away

I have noticed you have omitted hair metal...<img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

I never viewed Thin Lizzy as Heavy Metal. I felt they were more of a hard blues band in the ilk of the Rolling Stones. I mean I am not a metal guy so I am probably wrong, but I just found it odd that they made the list.

If anyone is interested in melodic death metal I have to recommend Dark Tranquility. The other two founders of the Gothenburg sound, In Flames and At the Gates, are good too but DT was always my favorite. The cliche is to recommend The Gallery, but if you're just looking for a taste of melodeath in all its glory, Therein is the best example of the ride bands like DT can take you on.

I'm not sure what to classify it as, but Ayreon is a mind-blowing project from Arjen Anthony Lucassen, a man who is one of the most unsung musical minds of the past 30 years. Ayreon sits on the edge of prog and power and uses dozens of guest performers for every album that are all concept albums (except for Actual Fantasy) which tell epic stories of sci-fi and fantasy worlds. It's like King Crimson tripped down the stairs, fell through Ziggy Stardust and Blind Guardian and when it landed, a collective of metal's best voices found themselves inexplicably drawn to sing along. Like pretty much anything related to concept albums, it's hard to recommend a single song. Liquid Eternity seems like a good intro. Though if you have the time, I recommend listening to the entirety of 01011001. Arjen put all the Ayreon albums up for free on YouTube because he's just a cool guy like that.

I could go on for hours with metal recommendations, but those two will work as a start.

I've been a fan of different sub-genres of metal since the 90's. Not a lot of stuff I have heard recently sticks with me too much though (except maybe Bad Wolves who I really like).

Fear Factory was probably the band that got my love affair with this type of music started when I heard Demanufacture in 1996 (I know the album came out in 1995 but I wasn't really into music much back then). Stratovarius were also one of the first bands I fell in love with. I dare you to listen to Destiny by them and say it is rubbish! <img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" />

I still listen to albums like Midian as well as Damnation and a Day (both albums are by Cradle of Filth for those who don't know). Death Cult Armageddon by Dimmu Borgir is still one of my favourites too after 15 or so years. Damage Done by Dark Tranquility from 2002 was a decent album too (IMO) as was Haven.

Most Metal Bands with a female vocalist. Halestorm, Arch Enemy, The Agonist, Lacuna Coil (one of my favourite bands still after 16 years), Nightwish (circa 200-2004) to name a few.

I could list off bands I love all night but I've not got the time. A lot of the bands bring back amazing memories though of great times with great friends. Back when you didn't listen to this to be "different, edgy or cool" but because you loved the music and loved the lifestyle.

It's probably got something to do with all the narration by Doug Bradley.

I mainly associate myself with Thrash Metal, Early Heavy Metal, Nu Metal and I'm quite fond of the the emos genres of metal (that probably won't sit well with everyone) for the most part but I listen to all genres fondly really except Black Metal I'll be honest with you it scares the living hell out of me the Mayhem and Varg Vikernes chronicles is enough to board off that entire genre let alone the music but thats just my opinion.

Some of my favourite Metal bands are Metallica, Bullet For My Valentine, Slipknot, Megadeth, Pantera, Slayer, Dio (also why weren't Dio in the Heavy Metal 1980's section Holy Diver is a part of Metal History), Avenged Sevenfold, Black Sabbath, Killswitch Engage, Stratovarius, Babymetal (that ain't gonna sit well either), Lamb of God, Breaking Benjamin, System of A Down, Deep Purple, Rage Against The Machine, Korn, Sevendust, Three Days Grace, Rise Against just to name good bit of them.

But aside from them and other members of Mayhem like Dead, early black metal has always struck me as very tryhard and childish. It's really only when black metal bands get away from the death, death, devil, devil, evil, evil songs and how "kvlt" their music totally is and instead use the aesthetics of black metal to create an atmosphere that I start enjoying it. Samael for instance started as another generic "Satan is lord" band and after three albums they shifted to lyrics that require more than one brain cell to write and we got Passage, one of the best metal albums of the 90s.

I was lucky to visit the last Ronnie James Dio's performance in Atlantic City. That's who is a real icon of Metal. I really enjoyed the show and the energy there. The weather was bad a few days before the concert and my flight was delayed... I thought I'll have a heart attack! But I've found business-class tickets here very fast. I proud I saw this show, really.

So thrash and nu-metal I guess is my preference.
