Chill? Seriously?

The Tag Team Specialists versus “The Cornerstone” Riley McManus and Jeffrey Aroma

Guessing this is some kind of Joel Bryant retirement angle, or you need a justification to set up Riley's next three title matches. Knowing you're short on top babyfaces, this is probably an excuse to give good guys lower on the card a shot

I felt we had had our best year as a company. The second annual Oxford Invitational had been our best show. We had consistently put on strong shows and strong offerings, but I was not a member of the TotalExtremeWrestling.com staff and I didn't have a vote and ultimately, it was what it was. Our fans didn't care and our bottom line did not care. We just had to keep putting out the product we were putting out and we would continue to be successful.

We were rolling creatively. Riley had found a whole new level as a performer since he turned heel and provided a different kind of heel than Primus Allen -- but both were drawing us money. Riley's program with Joel was going to come to a head at the end of the month -- we just had to do two little promo pieces to set up the match for the fourth Anniversary.

It had been exhilarating to wrestle at Christmas Chaos, but I was not planning on doing it on a regular basis. I wanted to do it one time -- I wanted to say that I had wrestled for my own company once and of course I had to go over Now, it wasn't actually my own ego to put myself over. It fit the story we were telling -- I would have been just as happy to stare up at the lights and put someone over, but it wasn't what the story called for -- not that Jeff or Riley cared. They were happy to do it. We had built a happy little circus family here in Denver and I was the ring leader.

2019 had been great. 2020? It could only be better.

"I am a man of my word. At Christmas Chaos 2019, Jeffery Aroma and I were defeated by Joel Bryant and Robert Oxford and I signed a contract that said I would make a public apology. Instead of doing it in the middle of the ring, I wanted to have it posted to my social media and to YouTube so it could live forever. I wanted to make sure that, as a man of my word, that my apology would live forever.

Recently, I have been criticized for my attitude and actions. I've been criticized for inducting myself into the Hall of Fame. For what I've set about Mr. Oxford, Mr. Bryant, and the management of this organization. I understand that my actions have upset people. And I'm sorry.

I'm sorry that it took me so long to speak the truth! I'm sorry it took me so long to talk about the hypocrisy of this organization. I'm sorry that I called out the nepotism of Robert Oxford for making matches for the children of his friends, for his friends, and for the people that suck up to him. I'm sorry that I'm the best wrestler this company has ever seen and I don't get the respect. I'm sorry that I'm the reigning, defending, Rocky Mountain Heavyweight Champion and Robert Oxford can't get the belt off me. So yes. I'm sorry. "

Riley stands up from the chair he was sitting in.

"Robert, you and your lackey Joel got lucky at Christmas Chaos. Jeffery and I underestimated you. We took it easy on you -- so you all got lucky, but it doesn't matter. I'm still the Champion and I refuse... I REFUSE to defend my Championship again unless something is in it for me. I refuse to step into the ring again until I get Joel Bryant one more time... But I don't just want him. I want his career. You want my belt? You want my attitude to change... Put up your best friend's career. Put it on the line and I will gladly defend my Championship against him. I'll wear a Rocky Mountain Wrestling t-shirt and smile. That is my demand. If you don't meet it, I won't be at Fourth Anniversary and I won't defend the Rocky Mountain Heavyweight Championship until that demand is met. I look forward to hearing your answer."

Joel Bryant and Robert Oxford are in front of the camera. Neither man looks happy.

Robert, "It has recently been brought to my attention the demands of Riley McManus. He is holding the Rocky Mountain Heavyweight Championship hostage for an opportunity to wrestle with Joel's career on the line. He believes that I, as match maker for this organization, have rewarded people close to me with undue opportunities. I was hoping that at Christmas Chaos, when Joel and I defeated he and his lackey Aroma, he would embrace the humility that had made him so popular here. I was wrong. I underestimated the arrogance that Riley has.

"I have spoken at length with Joel and now I will turn it over to Joel -- since Riley's demands centered on him."

Robert stops speaking and turns to Joel. Joel takes a long moment.

Joel, "For thirty-one years I have been involved in this business. I've wrestled all over the world. Held Champions. Proven myself. I've done it all. Riley, I was wrestling when you were coming out of your mama. I was a star when you were starting school. I've been wrestling your entire life. I've survived everyone who has ever wanted to do me harm. Everyone who has wanted to put me out to pasture. You think you're man enough to put me down? You think you're the one to end my career? Fine. Let's find out. Let's see if you can do it -- but let's see if you can do it by yourself -- without the help of that monster that follows you around like a lost puppy. You want to end my career? Okay, but you're going to have to do it in a Steel Cage. That way we can settle this like men. Pinfall or submission. No outside shenanigans. Let's find out if you're up to the challenge."

Robert, "And there you have it. At the Fourth Anniversary show, in the main event, inside of a steel cage it will be Joel Bryant putting up his career against Riley McManus putting up the Rocky Mountain Heavyweight Championship."

I still feel twenty five

Most of the time

I still raise a little cain with the boys

Honky Tonks and pretty women

Lord I'm still right there with them

Singing above the crowd and the noise

Sweat covered Joel’s body as he left his feet for Riley. Riley bounced Joel’s feet off the middle of the top rope and Joel felt himself go vertical and then over. He hit the back how he had been taught to hit the mat thirty-one years ago -- with his shoulders and feet hitting at the same time. It helped spread the impact as well as create the most noise. Riley’s blood-and-sweat soaked body covered his. It was almost time.

Sometimes I feel like Jesse James

Still trying to make a name

Knowing nothings gonna change what I am

I was a young troubadour

When I rode in on a song

And I'll be an old troubadour

When I'm gone

Joel couldn’t hear the crowd. He knew they were making noise -- it was there in the background -- but he was hyper focused on one sound. He could hear when Alvin Lavin’s body hit the canvas in position. He could hear when Alvin’s hand hit for a one. Then a two. All time seemed to freeze. It would be another second now. That’s how long was left on Joel’s career. One second. Thirty one years came down to this moment. The Oxford Arena was sold out. Three thousand people strong. He had done it all in his career. He held the GCG Tag Team Championship. Twice he was TCW World Tag Team Champions -- all three of those with his best friend, Robert Oxford. He’d been TCW Hardcore and International Champion. He had been Rocky Mountain Wrestling’s first Can-Am Champion. For the past two and almost a half years he had been in Rocky Mountain Wrestling, performing for his best friend. He had given Robert everything he could and tonight he gave Robert the last thing he had to give -- his career.

Well, the truth about a mirror

It's that a damn old mirror

Don't really tell the whole truth

It don't show what's deep inside

Oh read between the lines

It's really no reflection of my youth

It was bittersweet. You never wanted your career to end. You thought you were immortal. But no one was immortal. First it was his knees and then it was his back and then his neck and then his wind. He still had his mind. His mind was as sharp ever, but he knew his body couldn’t take the punishment any longer. It was time.

Sometimes I feel like Jesse James

Still trying to make a name

Knowing nothings gonna change what I am

And I'll be an old troubadour

When I'm gone

Alvin Lavin’s hand struck the mat for a third time. It was over. Joel was done. He had done one last job. He blinked back the tears and stared up at the lights. Both actual and metaphorical. It was over. He could rest. Thirty-one years…

It was a couple of hours later. Joel and Robert were the only ones left in the building and they sat in the ring. Robert was sipping from a bottle of whiskey -- Joel didn’t drink. Thus, the straight shooter.

I was a young troubadour

When I rode in on a song

And I'll be an old troubadour

When I'm gone

“You sure about this?” Robert asked him.

Joel nodded and reached for his gatorade. “Yes. It’s the right decision.”

“Why Knoxville?”

“It’s a good territory for wrestling. It’s in Sneer’s old territory. I already purchased the rights to the SCCW titles -- so I can have the Southern Heavyweight and Southern Tag Team. I’ve got good investors there so I have plenty of money. I’m ready. Championship Wrestling from Tennessee here I come.” Joel said.

It meant that he would be leaving Rocky Mountain Wrestling. He was going to be a promoter and booker himself. It fit. He had been a good booker in TCW. He’d been a good assistant booker here. Now, he was going to be able to go onto his own and set up shop. CWT would be welcomed into the Confederation of the Territories. They would be welcomed with open arms. Joel was ready for this next step. Ready for what it meant.

Robert looked at him and took a long drink from his whiskey. “I’ll miss you. But I’ll support you. You can have those guys you wanted. They’ll get you squared away and be a good backbone for you.”

Joel nodded. This really was it. He was driving to Knoxville tomorrow. “Thank you, Robert. For everything.”

Robert slid off the apron and stood to his feet. He took another swig of whiskey. “You’re my best friend, Joel. One of the best people in this business. Who would’ve think we would both be running our own companies? Let’s take this business over.”

Joel also stood. “Deal.”

The two men hugged. They had been friends for twenty-five years. Had been partners. Shared cars and flights and hotels together. Now, they would share the title of promoter together. It was fitting. Joel finished his gatorade and just walked off. He didn’t say anything else. Deal was all he needed to say. After a quarter of a century, they didn’t need more words than that.

We have officially hit seventy-five shows. I'd like to take a minute to say thank you. As of my writing this, this diary has almost 22,600 views. I started this diary on November 5, 2018. It's been two and a half months since then. I started this diary after four failed diary attempts. One that was lost with a computer malfunction and three other ones to health related issues. I wasn't sure if this diary had legs -- and I wasn't sure if it was going to be well received. I was very tentative. I knew I wanted to tell a story about an old school, straight-forward, no-frills promotion.

I knew, that in doing this diary, I would be eschewing the results and excellent formatting that have made guys like The Lloyd and Eisen-Verse so popular here. I wanted to focus on the narratives of a guy running the company and what that would be like. Over time, it evolved to include creating narratives about the people that populate that this world. It also evolved to include more graphics (there were zero initially) and have an upped presentation. I've tried to include that as part of the narrative.

This diary would not be possible, at least at the level it is, without the help of several of the community members. First and foremost, I owe a big debt of gratitude to King Bison. He has made a lot of the renders that I use in this diary -- some specifically for me (Riley, Clyde Puder, The Devil's Rejects, Rush, Bison, Browning and Aroma), some are renders he has made else where that he made sure I knew existed and had for use in this diary. He's also been a sounding block for the booking.

Christian_Shane and willr0cks have made all of the belts and trophies that I use here. Christian_Shane made all of the actual title belts while Will made the Top Graduate, Oxford Invitational, and Gold Rush trophies for me.

KnowYourEnemy made the Rocky Mountain Wrestling logo I use -- and made the logo for Gold Rush that I use.

The Lloyd made all of the headers that you see me use.

DarK_RaideR and moafnsteel have been sounding boards to bounce ideas off of and give consistent feedback.

There are many of you who have been readers/predictors/commentators since the very beginning and I thank you for being on this journey with me. I tend to get sappy when I hit these milestones.

A special shoutout must go to theheel. He has been an active predictor on every diary I've done here. So thank you man.

There is a lot of story left in this diary (I hope) and I hope I have entertained you enough to keep you invested/interested in what comes next, especially since we have closed the chapter on Joel Bryant's career both in the ring and with Rocky Mountain Wrestling. He really did retire and start his own promotion so I incorporated that into the narrative.

There are some changes coming starting February (to accommodate the narrative of Robert helping Joel open his own company). We are now on the march to 100 shows (which should, funny enough, come at the 5th anniversary show).

Once again, thank you for joining me on this journey.

First of all, congratulations for the sheer amount of content you've pumped out in these two and a half months. Most diaries are extremely slower once the initial rush is over and as a person who logs on here practically every day, I appreciate always having something new to read. You have posted a lot and and it was all interesting.

I never thought I'd be so into a diary that doesn't bother with writing out matches and promos, even as a summary at least, but you have roped me in and kept me here with the backstage narratives, which I consider RMW's greatest strength. Furthermore, your style has influenced mine and even inspired me (alongside King Bison's TITAN Factory and moafnsteel's Lone Star Wrestling) to start my own dojo-based save/diary in Piledriver Wrestling.

All I can say is congratulations and keep up the good work.

Been silently lurking from the beginning but felt this was a good time to jump in and say how much I’ve enjoyed reading this, the narrative focus provides something different to the other great diaries on this forum, much like how Robert has done with the wrestling landscape. Keep up the good work and I’ll try my best to be more active with some predictions in the future!
