Backlund calls Snuka a great athlete corrupted by Lou Albano. Backlund says it’s going to be tough enough with Snuka in the ring but he’s going to have to also keep an eye on Albano on the outside of the ring. Backlund continues talking about not letting the fans down and how important the WWF title is to him, he’s going to give it his best effort. This is going to be a non-title match against a team the likes of which has never been seen in the World Wrestling Federation, and with Captain Louis Albano leading them there seems to be no stopping them.” Jules Strongbow answers “we’ve never backed down from any team, any challenge and we aren’t about to start now!”

Vince says “the fighting spirit runs deep in the Strongbows but one has to wonder if that will be enough to over come the Wild Samoans.”

C+ rating

Back in the ring for the next bout
Magnificent Muraco faced the always popular Tony Garea. Graham said “McMahon, look at the power in the Superstar, look at the arms, the chest. I am, always have been and always will be the “tower of power, the man of the hour, too sweet to be sour!” Vince says “No one will ever question your physique or your dedication Mr. Graham but another man whose dedication can't be question will face off against you, in one Polish Power Ivan Putski.” Graham says “Putski should be wrestling in midget matches, not in the ring with the Superstar. Look at the 22 inch arms on the Superstar, McMahon, the bearhug is gonna squeeze the Polish Pipsqueak Putski until his ribs break, the air leaves his body all the while screaming, “no more Superstar, no more!” and then, only then I might show mercy and let him drop to the mat.” Graham flexes his arms as he leaves and Vince says “it will truly be a match between titans.”

B rating

Vince says “this should be an outstanding matchup as the devious and dangerous Mr. Fuji takes on the Polish Power Ivan Putski who looks to be in the best shape of his life.”

Ivan Putski faces Mr. Fuji. Fuji started things off with his salt ritual to cleanse the ring of evil spirits. Vince says”Fuji might want to throw some of that salt on himself.” Fuji then bows to Putski.

Fuji as he tends to do played coy, smiling, bowing, trying to get Putski to lower his guard but Putski was having none of it. Putski used his power to hurt Fuji, grinding away a side headlock. Fuji used his wrist tape to choke Putski to get the advantage. Karate chops to the neck and throat had Putski hurt. A backdrop set Putski up for Fuji’s Bonzai running headbutt. Putski moved in time, a dazed Fuji was then an easy target for the running Polish hammer and pin giving Putski the win.

C+ rating

Batch interviews #3

Vince talks to Ivan Putski about facing Superstar Billy Graham. Putski says” Graham can make all the midget jokes he wants, when they lock up Graham’s gonna see who has the real power, the power of the people, the ethnic people, the hard working people, that’s where I get my power Vinnie That’s what drives me everyday in the gym and in the ring, to never let the Polish people, the Italian people all the people, to never let them down.”

C+ rating

Next Vince brings in Rocky Johnson who talks about his upcoming match against Johnny Rodz. Vince comments “how great Rocky looks and what he’s been doing to prepare for his match against Rodz?”

Rocky says’I’ve been hitting the gym lifting heavy, hitting the heavy bag and speed bag. I’m the strongest, fastest, quickest I’ve ever been. Johnny Rodz is a tough, tough man but I’m making this my first step up the ladder. This waist needs some gold around it Vince and you gotta work hard to get those titles. Bob Backlund didn’t get it handed to him, Pedro didn’t get it handed to him, the Strongbows didn’t get it handed to them. They all worked hard, and to get to the top and to stay at the top and that’s what I’m going to do and Rodz is that first step.”

Vince ends with “a very motivated Rocky Johnson ladies and gentlemen. Up next our main event.”

C+ rating

Intercontinental title match

Two former WWF heavyweight champions go to battle as Pedro Morales, the current Intercontinental champion stepped in against Superstar Billy Graham. Graham initially went for a test of strength which showed his superior power but Morales legendary toughness made up for it. Morale fired away with fist to Graham’s mid-section. The Superstar retaliated with karate thrusts to the throat giving him the advantage. Off the ropes Graham locked the Pedro in the bearhug, the 22 inch arms of Graham squeezing tighter and tighter. On the verge of having the life squeezed from his body, Morales got his second wind and fired away at the head of Graham, eventually Graham weakened, dropped Morales to the mat. Morales gained the advantage again with punches that rocked the Superstar. Pedro, on fire laid into Graham with punch after punch. Graham got of the ring to try and get a time out but Morales followed, after more shots from Morales, Graham out of desperation grabbed a ringside chair and nailed Morales causing a disqualification giving Pedro the victory and retain the Intercontinental title. Morales wanted to go after Graham but the referee and security kept them separated.

Graham headed to the back throwing his hands up wanting nothing more to do with the fiery Puerto Rican.

B+ rating

Vince close out with “Next week on Championship Wrestling you will see the likes of Big John Studd, Ray “Crippler” Stevens, also next week Mr. USA Tony Atlas sees action against the Animal George Steele and in the main event The Grand Wizard’s newest mercenary the Masked Superstar faces Tito Santana. All that and more next time on Championship Wrestling.

Overall C+ rating

Wait a second a 1983 Bob Backlund promo getting a B- rating. Yeah I am calling B.S. on that.<img alt=":D" data-src="//content.invisioncic.com/g322608/emoticons/biggrin.png.929299b4c121f473b0026f3d6e74d189.png" src="<___base_url___>/applications/core/interface/js/spacer.png" /> There is no way white bread Backlund could give a B- promo. Now bat crap crazy Backlund could but not this version of Backlund.

In all seriousness though, I really enjoyed your first show. It was very well written and you ran it like a show would be run back then. Top notch job.

Backlund was stone faced while Snuka just smiled. Backlund started off quickly taking Snuka down with an array of amateur moves. Snuka no worse for wear just smiled as he got to his feet. Snuka took a moment to consult with Albano. Backlund avoided Snuka’s attempts to back the champ into a corner. Snuka showed some power when Backlund had a side headlock and the Superfly lifted him up and set him on the top turnbuckle leaving Backlund with a stunned look on his face while Snuka smiled and Albano applauded. Snuka went for a test of strength with Backlund and had the advantage for a moment but Backlund stepped over and through and Snuka found himself on the mat unsure of just what happened.

Snuka was done playing by Backlund’s rules, and got very aggressive with vicious chops and headbutts. Snuka had Backlund in the corner and started gnawing on the champ’s forehead causing blood to trickle down. Snuka energized by the sight of Backlund’s blood repeatedly headbutted Backlund until the blood flowed freely. Snuka ran his hand over Backlund’s forehead and wiped the blood on his own chest. Quick jabs from the former boxer put Stevens head on a swivel, and a big left put the Crippler face down on the mat. Johnson missed a charge in the corner, Stevens rammed Johnson’s head repeatedly into the corner. Johnson fell back to the mat, Stevens went up top and came off with his vicious “bombs away” knee drop to the chest that almost got 3 if not for Johnson getting his foot on the rope. Stevens the tried to lock Johnson in a Boston crab, Johnson worked his way out of it sending the Crippler crashing in the corner. Johnson came back with more fistcuffs jabbing at the jaw and mid section of Stevens again. Johnson whipped Stevens to the corner sending him upside down and out of the ring. Johnson wasn’t about to the let up and followed laying into Stevens with more punches as the referee began his 10 count. The Crippler proving he is one of the toughest men in the sport fought back with punches of his own, he then rammed Johnson back first into the apron. Stevens grabbed Johnson and went for the piledriver on the floor, Stevens almost had Johnson up but Rocky was able to backdrop Stevens on the floor. As the ref’s count hit 8, Johnson picked Stevens up wanting to dish out more damage and ran the Crippler shoulder first into the ring post. Rocky then realized the ref was counting and tried to get back in the ring. It was too late, the ref counted 10 and then Johnson scooted in. The match was declared a double count out draw. Johnson was upset and distracted , Stevens thinking there was nothing left to lose snuck back in the ring and attacked Johnson from behind with clubbing blows, Stevens raked the eyes, a suplex had Johnson weakened enough that he was able to hit his devastating piledriver. Johnson was hurt but that wasn’t enough for Stevens, a second piledriver before the ref finally was able to get the Crippler to back off. A proud Ray Stevens despite the double count out finish raised his hands in triumph.

A rating

Overall C+
