What Is The Can Fighting League?

The Can Fighting League or CANFL for short was the brain child of businessman and MMA enthusiast Paul McCarthy. An unknown within the MMA scene, his idea is to take a handful of amateur prospects, provide them with the world class training facilities and fierce competition to season them before sending them out into the professional world, with the goal of setting the MMA scene ablaze. With that vision, the Can Fighting League was born.

For the fighters involved? They'll be participating across several tournaments, each offering difference environments and rules sets to help develop their skills. There are five difference tournaments, each fighter will be able to pick two of their choosing, with the third - The CANFL Open Weight being mandatory for all.

The CANFL Open Weight

 • Soccer Kicks and Stomps to downed opponents are also illegal

After 3 Seasons the group of amateurs will be sent off into the big league and this will turn into watcher diary as we'll follow their professional careers.. until the next batch of rookies come through. At that point there'll be updates on both the existing and new generation of fighters coming through

With that now comes the part where you can get involved, next post will feature an application form (it's a touch wall of text-y, so sorry in advance :o ). Anyway I'll be looking forward to see how this goes

Up next is your Height and Weight. Height's pretty straight forward (reach will be partially affected by your height and altered by other factors later on). Weight has 4 categories. For now we'll just focus on two - Walking Weight, which is how heavy they are day to day and their Best Weight - their preferred weight to fight at. In the future we'll add a minimum and maximum weight. Rule of thumb, heavier fighters hit harder, quicker fighters move and strike faster.

Height:

Walking Weight:

Best Weight:

Next is your fighter's Career Goals. There are 3 options to pick from and they'll affect how they sign/negotiate with companies throughout their career. Glory orientated fighters want the fame and accolades that comes from working under the premier companies, whilst Money orientated fighters are solely after the C.R.E.A.M. Career fighters are after a combination of both.

Career Goals: (Career/Glory/Money)

Up next is your starting stats. You'll be giving 2150 points to use across all the categories below. Keep in mind any bonus stats from your Fighting Style above will be added in after. Brief description of each skills comes courtesy of the "Help" section in WMMA5.

General Skills

Covers your fighter's physical skills and general athleticism

Cut Immunity:

How likely your fighter is to be cut by strikes. High rating is more resilient, though even with a maximum rating a fighter isn't immune to cuts. Fights can be stopped from a bad cut.

Conditioning:

Your fighter's physical conditioning. Determines their starting stamina in a fight, how long they can fight and at what intensity. For example a fighter in peak condition might be able to go near non-stop for 2-3 rounds straight, compared to one with an average conditioning, who will have to pace themselves at a slow pace and still likely tire out. Important to know is that once a fighter becomes tired/gassed they'll take an increasingly larger penalty to their skills as the fight goes on.

Strength:

A fighter's physical power. High strength can provide a bonuses for Wrestling and Grappling and is also necessary to pull off in-fight moves such as Slams, big Suplexes or Powerbombs.

Mobility:

How mobile a fighter is. High mobility enables and increases the chance for successful explosive and/or leaping moves (Flying Knees, Stomps, Flying Armbars ect).

Flexibility:

A fighter's physical flexibility. Highly Flexible fighters are able to pull off moves that inflexible fighters physically can't. Couple examples would include the Rubber Guard, Omoplatas, Gogoplatas and Flying Armbars.

Reflexes:

General reaction speed. A high Reflex rating is useful both offensively and defensively (both setting up and dodging potential danger).

Chin Strength:

How hard of a hit a fighter can take before being stunned and knocked out. The higher the rating, the more durable the fighter. Multiple strikes during a fight will wear down the rating, becoming more likely to get stunned/knocked out.

Stun Recovery:

How long it takes a fighter to recover from being stunned. The higher the rating, the quicker the fighter recovers

Consistency:

How consistent a fighter is. How consistency works in WMMA5 is as followed: a number between 1-90 is generated at the start of the fight for each fighter and if it's higher than their Consistency rating they'll suffer a penalty (anywhere from 1% - 15% of some key skills) to simulate an off-day. That said, fighters with 90 and above in Consistency are unable to have off-days.

Weight Cutting:

How effective a fighter is at cutting weight. A higher rating means that a fighter is able to safely cut more weight, which may allow them to complete a different weight classes.

Standing

Punch Technique:

A fighter's technical skill in boxing. Highly skilled boxers are able to pick holes in their opponent's Guard and land shots nearly at will. Low rated fighters will have a hard time landing anything of value on a decent opponent.

Hand Speed:

How quick a fighter's hands are at throwing punches. Quick hands can make up for poor technique, but not entirely.

High Kick Power:

Natural kicking power with kicks to the head. Represents how hard your fighter hits on a clean strike. Same as punches, a strike that doesn't land clean, is partially blocked or thrown from a tired fighter doesn't hit as hard, but still hard with a decent rating.

Small for a heavyweight, he compensates by throwing more and harder punches than everyone he faces, The Brampton Brahma looks to make his impact in MMA.

 • 6 months later...

After a prolonged delay, we're back to kick this off. But first let's introduce the inital players of this story...

Meet the Fighters

Anton "The Despicable" Mee

Played by Slogger (EWB VI)

Anton 'The Despicable' Mee is an American Light Heavyweight fighter out of Darlington, South Carolina. A national calibre boxer, he is regarded as the most well rounded boxer within the CANFL.

Strengths:

 • Good all round boxing skills
 • Great Conditioning
 • Plenty of Heart

"The Headsman" Stevie Gray

Played by Troy (EWB VI)

'The Headsman' Stevie Gray is an English Middleweight fighter. Formerly a football hooligan, Stevie credits his training in MMA turning his life around.

Strengths:

 • Unmatched Killer Instincts
 • Versatile Striker
 • Unyielding, always goes out swinging

Jesse "The Brampton Brahma" Nayar

Played by daddy_shelton

Constantly bullied growing up for being Indian, gay, or both, Jesse turned to fighting as a way to fight back against a world he was angry at. Learning to box gave him confidence, though, and his anger lessened. Now preferring to laugh at the world instead, he talks a big game and fights an even bigger one. Small for a heavyweight, he compensates by throwing more and harder punches than everyone he faces, The Brampton Brahma looks to make his impact in MMA.

Strengths:

 • Hardest Hitting Hands in the CANFL
 • Great Hand Speed
 • Decent Sprawl

Alex "Too Long" Steinhausenbergerdorff

Played by raufbold

Having a long last name even by German standards, Alex had trouble rising to prominence despite having decent Muay Thai skills. A nickname given by an announcer on an amateur fight changed that.

Strengths:

 • Only Muay Thai fighter currently within the CANFL
 • Stinging Low Kicks
 • Crushing Thai Clinch game

John "The Conqueror" Lyskaris

Played by SeanMcG - We need the numbers...

John 'The Conqueror' Lyskaris is an Australian Heavyweight fighter. He is a national calibre Greco-Roman Wrestler.

Strengths:

 • CANFL's best (and only) Wrestler
 • Strong Takedowns
 • Great Clinch Grappler

And that's all for now. Next part will be starting soon, as each player will need to pick two events they wish to partake in this season. Either Grapple Arts Invitational, Bushido Fighting Spirit Open, Vale Tudo Rumble and or Iron Man Championship. They'll earn points (from their results and fights) that will be used to upgrade their fighters.

Season 1 Part 1 Recap

With the first lot of tournaments now finished, we'll go through how each user fighter fared.

Anton "The Despicable" Mee came out in Season One with a massive statement. The Vale Tudo Heavyweight showcased his heart, with his war against Adam Fullington in the Round of 16. After a strong start and near finish in Round 3, Anton survived being knocked down twice in the 5th round and FOUR times in the 6th Round only to hold on and submit his challenger in the 7th to secure a remarkable victory and the Fight Of The Event Award. Unfortunately he would fall in the Round of 8 to eventual runner up Fernando Lorenzo. His second event saw Anton defy expectations and take out the entire thing! Winning the Bushido Fight Spirit Open on his first try on the back of great boxing and counter-striking. The run featured a 54 second KO demolition over Lonnie Floarian in the 1st Round.

Next up is Stevie Gray who had an unfortunate run.. twice. In the Bushido Fighting Spirit Open, any momentum from his impressive opening victory (3rd Round Submission) was cut short after a crushing loss to Taylor Byrant. Stevie had managed to nearly finish the fight within the first 6 minutes but Taylor held on, and submitted "The Headsman" from his guard with a sudden armbar. Taylor would go on to lose in the final four to runner-up Jeremy Vera. His Vale Tudo Lightweight debut felt like deja vu, a strong first round submission win and then ran into another buzzsaw - eventual winner Anthony Fraiser. Stevie had been in control for the first 6 & and half rounds of the fight, but fatigue had left him exposed resulting in a late submission in the 7th Round.

Speaking of mixed bags is Jesse Nayar's run. Starting with a fantastic run in the Vale Tudo Heavyweight event, Jesse reached the Final Four before being beaten by it's eventual winner - Leonardo Soler. The referee stopped the fight just 53 seconds into the 2nd round when it was clear Jesse was no longer intelligently defending himself. In the Bushido Fighting Spirit, Jesse was shocking stopped early, obliterated by unknown Tino Drago in just 2:18 in the Round of 16. A wicked four punch combo staggered him, the following headkick dropped him and was promptly stomped out by Drago.

As for the other GDS-er? Alex Steinhausenbergerdorff suffered a similar fate to Stevie Gray in the Vale Tudo Lightweight Tournament. Strong first round win (That featured Alex murdering his poor opponent Steven Brook with Muay Thai knees to the body for 6 straight rounds) with his second fight seeing him in control for the first five rounds, run out of gas late, gets taken down and submitted. His second event, the Grapple Arts Middleweight tournament however saw Alex make it to the round of 8, starting with a brutal KO victory in the over Andrew Dudley via a Muay Thai knee to the jaw. He would eventually lose to runner up Quincy Boucher.

Lastly we've got John Lyskaris who was a model of consistency across his first two events. The Grapple Arts Heavyweight event saw three quick submission wins off the back of solid wrestling before being submitted in the final four by future winner Pauel Van Couvenhoven. His most successful run however came in the Iron Man Championship, finishing as the runner-up. The highlight of the tournament for John was a 41 minute beatdown of dangerous striker Otto Cavegn, whom endure 25 minutes of ground strikes (235 strikes!) after giving up his back before falling to a technical submission (the guy refused to tap, what a baller).

Quick Results

Fighters

Anton Mee 7-0-1 (5x Decision, 1x Submission, 1x KO), Champion of Bushido Fighting Spirit Open Season One

Stevie Gray 2-0-2 (2x Submission)

Jesse Nayar 4-0-2 (3x Decision, 1x KO), Vale Tudo Heavyweight Final Four

John Lyskaris 7-0-2 (6x Submission, 1x KO), Iron Championship Runner Up Season One

Alex Steinhausenbergerdorff 3-0-2 (2x Decision, 1x KO)

Events

Grapple Arts Invitation Heavyweight - Pauel Van Couvenhoven

Grapple Arts Invitation Middleweight - Daniel Holmes

Bushido Fight Spirit Open - Anton Mee

Iron Man Championship - Teadoro Saez

Vale Tudo Heavyweight - Leonardo Soler

Vale Tudo Lightweight - Anthony Fraiser

Up next is the Season One CANFL Open Weight Championship, but before then you'll be able to upgrade your fighters with points earned from their results. I'll send out those PM's shortly.
