World Wrestling Entertainment: The Global Era [2005]

Navigating through the collapse of their main competition, a company name change and a slight re-tooling of the product in the early 2000s, you'd think World Wrestling Entertainment would be fully content resting on their laurels atop the wrestling food chain. Well, as Vince McMahon would likely tell you, complacency is boring. Before they truly became the global entity that they are presently in 2019, WWE were still looking to fully breakout on the global scale. While the United States and Canada was fully in their grasp, the company still had their eyes on expanding further into Europe, Mexico and Japan territories.

After all, if you could just about fully conquer a continent, why stop short of conquering the planet?

New Years Revolution 2005 - Preview

Scheduled to be held from the Jose M. Agrelot Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico

<div style="background-color:#D3D3D3;color:black;border-style:solid;border-width:3px";">

A Champion is to be Crowned!

After a rare double-fall in December on Monday Night RAW in a triple threat match, Triple H was forced to vacate his World Heavyweight Championship by General Manager Eric Bischoff. The following week, Bischoff announced that the championship would be defended in an elimination chamber match with Triple H having to attempt to reclaim his title against the likes of Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, Edge, Randy Orton and his Evolution stablemate, Batista. Evolution sent a message on the go-home episode of RAW with a victory over Jericho, Benoit and Orton this past Monday, but Edge stood tall at the end of the show while toe-to-toe with Batista after taking out Triple H as the remaining chamber participants were disposed of on the outside. One thing's for sure on Sunday night - this match is looking to be wide open.

Kane Returns on RAW, Challenges Snitsky

After having his throat crushed at Taboo Tuesday by Gene Snitsky, Kane returned to RAW this past Monday and was out for revenge. Beating his rival to a pulp before issuing a warning that he wanted a match for New Years Revolution. Following the ending of RAW, Kane was granted a match by Eric Bischoff for the pay-per-view.

Muhammad Hassan Looking to Send Another Statement with a Win in PPV Debut

Muhammad Hassan was granted a late match request for New Years Revolution; with the RAW newcomer being granted the opening slot for the pay-per-view against Tajiri. Looking to further send a statement to the RAW locker room and to those who pull the strings, Hassan will seek to capitalize with a win in what is to be his pay-per-view debut in WWE.

<p>Batista vs. Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho vs. Edge vs. Randy Orton vs. Triple H - World Heavyweight Championship - Elimination Chamber w/Shawn Michaels as Special Guest Referee</p><p> </p><p>

I'm gonna go with HHH because he's a great heel, and on the last Raw, it seems that there was some teased tension between him and Batista. That looks to be the plan for Mania.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

Shelton Benjamin © vs. Maven - WWE Intercontinental Championship</p><p> </p><p>

I really don't see Maven winning here. I'm going with Benjamin.</p><p> </p><p>

Eugene and Regal © vs. Christian and Tomko - WWE World Tag Team Championships</p><p> </p><p>

Title change is likely here - my pick is Christian and Tomko.</p><p> </p><p>

Lita © vs. Trish Stratus - WWE Women's Championship</p><p> </p><p>

If I remember correctly, Lita basically just won the title. For that reason, I'm going with Lita.</p><p> </p><p>

Kane vs. Gene Snitsky</p><p> </p><p>

Snitsky is terrible, and Kane isn't. Kane wins.</p><p> </p><p>

Tajiri vs. Muhammad Hassan</p><p> </p><p>

Hassan should pick up the win here.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>

I absolutely love this era, and am looking forward to see how far this diary goes. There really aren't a lot of them.</p>

In the opening contest of the main show, Muhammad Hassan put away Tajiri with a Reverse STO in 8:04. Tajiri was able to start the match off by getting in plenty of offense, but the size advantage of Hassan soon paid off for him as he started laying into the Japanese star with a variety of heavy-handed strikes. Following the victory, Hassan yelled towards the hard camera that his time was coming and nobody was going to hold him back.

Kane vs. Gene Snitsky

WEBiqjJ.jpggygY5sz.jpg?2DOHpHxR.jpg

A match that set the stage for the brutality to be featured in the main event as Kane and Snitsky quickly took it to the outside to throw each other into a variety of ringside objects. The momentum wildly swung between both men as each found their bodies being slammed off of various steel obstacles.

Soon, Snitsky's inexperience saw the brute go for a Pumphandle Slam too early on Kane. The Devil's Favorite Demon countered and delivered a brutal Chokeslam and was to for the pin, but instead picked his rival up and delivered a second Chokeslam for good measure before pinning for the win at 11:07.

Following the count of the fall, Kane stood up and stared down at his incapacitated rival and made a motion with his hands as if he was finally rid of him.

After the in-ring action clears, we are taken backstage as Todd Grisham is standing by with Evolution's Batista and Triple H - two members of tonight's elimination chamber match for the World Heavyweight Championship.

rdDUytJ.jpgN3tDQUa.jpg

Grisham: My guests at this time are Triple H and Batista. Gentlemen, tonight you face the most grueling structure in the history of the WWE in the form of the elimination chamber. What are your thoughts heading into this form of match?

HHH: Listen, Grisham, if you think both myself and Batista are worried at all about the elimination chamber, you've got it all wrong. I am one of two WWE superstars competing tonight to have participated in both chamber matches held so far. I know the ins and outs of this thing and I have passed on my expertise to my protegé here. Benoit? Edge? Forget about them, they've never competed in the chamber. Orton? Well, we didn't teach him everything.

Batista: Let's put it this way, Todd. We'll clear the way as usual and Evolution will claim the spoils once again.

Grisham: Tonight's match has a special stipulation that Shawn Michaels is to be the guest referee. Is this any cause for concern?

HHH: Shawn knows better than anyone what happens to people who get in my way. If he dares cross myself or Big Dave here, he knows he's not leaving San Juan in one piece tonight.

'WWE Women's Championship'

Lita © vs. Trish Stratus

WIHPwqP.jpggygY5sz.jpg?2yt8x0JD.jpg

A compelling back-and-forth matchup, Lita and Stratus put on a thrilling bout that featured several high spots including a dive from the top turnbuckle to the outside by Lita on Trish. By far, the match proved to be the match of the night in a bout that was sure to go in the books as one of the best ever put on between the two.

Stratus ultimately capitalized by ducking a clothesline and nailing a Stratusfaction off the turnbuckle, then put her feet on the second rope for leverage to get the three count and become the new WWE Women's Champion in 12:41.

'WWE World Tag Team Championships'

Eugene and Regal © vs. Christian and Tomko

7H2pnlt.jpg5owbQHV.jpggygY5sz.jpg?2wbRJ8ao.jpg5cNBWR8.jpg

A contest that stayed even throughout its duration, the lone tag team match of the night was a classic 'good' versus 'evil' fight with Eugene and Regal being able to thwart Christian and Tomko's heelish tactics successfully on multiple occasions. Ultimately, the champions fell to their challengers following Christian landing an Unprettier on Eugene at 11:47. A now distraught and title-less Regal attempted to make the save, but was just too late to bail out his younger partner.

RATING: 70

After picking up their freshly-won WWE World Tag Team Titles, Christian and Tomko celebrate as they then head to the back with the belts held high above their heads. Regal tends to Eugene as he makes sure his partner gets back to his feet under his own power.

Once Eugene does stand, Regal drops him with a clothesline! Regal continues his surprise assault on Eugene with several grounded punches before waiting for Eugene to stand. As Eugene groggily gets to his feet, Regal has produced a pair of brass knuckles as he then uses them to blast his protegé across the forehead! Eugene lays motionless in the ring as Regal then grabs the microphone.

Regal: For nearly an entire year, I have been relegated to being the guardian of this cretin. An entire year I have wasted away being nothing but fodder for all of you. A comedic foil to the rest of the locker room. No more. I'm done with this, and I'm done with YOU, Eugene.

Regal then throws the microphone at the downed Eugene as he takes a few seconds to stare down at the disposed man before heading to the back.

Batista vs. Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho vs. Edge vs. Randy Orton vs. Triple H

*Chris Jericho and Triple H enter the match as first two competitors*

Jericho and Triple H circled around each other trying to get a hold of the other with neither man quite able to get a grip on the other. This caused the clock to tick away, something that seemed to frustrate Triple H as he tried to in for the kill early. The most recent World Heavyweight Champion was finally able to grab hold of Jericho and plant him with a vicious spinebuster off of the ropes to open the match up for himself. The wily Jericho was quick enough, however, to escape from his attacker long enough to hold out until the five-minute clock ran out to unleash the next competitor into the chamber.

*Chris Benoit enters the match as the next competitor*

The match quickly turns into a numbers game as the two Canadians start to take the fight to the Evolution leader. Triple H is able to hold his own for some time, but a dropkick by Jericho into a flying shoulder tackle by Benoit kept Trips down for a considerable amount of time. With both Benoit and Jericho successfully taking down Triple H, Jericho quickly turns on Benoit as he pushes his tag partner from this past Monday into a corner and starts throwing knife edge chops his way. Benoit's expertise allowed him to quickly reverse his fortunes as he ducked a chop and threw Jericho into the corner instead as it soon became Y2J's turn to become the recipient of knife edge chops. As this was occurring, Triple H slowly got to his feet as he rested in the opposite corner watching his two current opponents pick each other apart. As Triple H regained his energy, the next combatant was released into the chamber...

*Batista enters the match as the next competitor*

An all-out brawl ensued as it soon became Benoit and Jericho versus Evolution as the fresh Batista and a rested Triple H started to tear into Benoit and Y2J. It was spinebusters galore as Batista and Triple H both hit their signature slams on both men. A brief conference between both Evolution members soon led to both men starting to pick apart Benoit as Y2J rolled underneath the bottom roe to recover. After taking Evolution's offense for a minute, Benoit started to fight back, but was quickly thrown down by a brutal shot to the throat by Triple H - a move that prompted referee Shawn Michaels to step in and warn his former best friend. Triple H merely shrugged off Michaels's intrusion as he picked up Benoit and delivered a facebreaker knee smash that opened him up for another spinebuster from Batista.

*Edge enters the match as the next competitor*

Edge entered the chamber in a frenzy as he took out Triple H by throwing him to the outside as he then went toe-to-toe with Batista. The two men traded strikes and ultimately Edge was able to down the big man with a quick sit-out facebuster. As Batista rolled under the bottom rope, Edge quickly waited in the corner for Benoit to stand. Once 'The Crippler' got to his feet, Edge charged for a Spear, but was met with a springboard dropkick from Jericho! Jericho then began to take the fight to Edge as the two started to fight each other in the ring as Benoit stepped through the ropes to start stomping away at Batista and Triple H out on the steel. Edge was able to get an advantage over Jericho and tried putting Y2J down with an Edgecution, but Jericho was able to reverse his way out of it and put Edge in the Walls of Jericho! Meanwhile, on the outside, Evolution managed to turn the tables on Benoit and began to throw him into the sides of the steel structure as the final competitor made his way into the ring...

*Randy Orton enters the match as the next competitor*

Orton headed to the outside to take the fight to his former Evolution colleagues as he threw Triple H into the ring and bounced Batista's head off the side of the chamber. As Edge struggled to grab a rope, Orton entered the ring and took advantage of the situation with Edge and Jericho as he ran from behind and planted Jericho's head into the mat with an RKO! Cover from Orton, 1...2...3!

*Chris Jericho has been eliminated. Batista, Benoit, Edge, Orton and Triple H remain.*

Orton picks up right where Jericho left off as he continues to work away at beating down Edge. Triple H soon was able to get to his feet as he threw Orton into the turnbuckle and then went for a Pedigree on Edge. Edge was able to power out of the setup for the move with a body drop as he then shoves a surprise RKO attempt from Orton away and into Michaels! Michaels isn't fully knocked down and warns Edge to watch it. Edge blows him off and continues to stomp away at Orton. Batista has now entered the fray as he joins the beat down on Orton as Triple H still remained on his back. As the melee inside the ring continues, Benoit quietly made his way on top of one of the holding cells for the wrestlers. He stands up as a wall of flashes go off from the fans' cameras as Benoit dives for a Diving Headbutt that connects with Triple H! Unbelievable! Benoit reels from the impact, but then drapes his arm over the last World Heavyweight Champion! 1...2...Batista bails his teammate out and stomps Benoit on the back of the head head!

Benoit recovers slowly and gets to his feet as Batista continues to stomp away at 'The Crippler.' Benoit tries to fight back against Batista as the two men get into a punch/chop standing battle. As Orton and Triple H recover on the outside, Edge crouched in the corner and sprinted towards the battling Batista and Benoit. Batista was able to spot Edge in time and leapt out of the way as Benoit took the full force of a Spear! 1...2...3!

*Chris Benoit has been eliminated. Batista, Edge, Orton and Triple H remain.*

Batista and Edge go toe-to-toe again as Triple H and Orton both get to their feet and start brawling on the outside grated area. The fight between the two competitors inside of the ring got a little close for comfort for the match's special guest referee as Edge shoved Batista into Michaels. HBK once again told Edge to cool it and issued a warning to Batista as well that he was off limits in the match. As this continued, Triple H and Orton got into a brutal brawl on the outside area that went back-and-forth between the former mentor and student. Triple H decided to end his skirmish with third-generation superstar by irish whipping him straight through a holding pod!

With Orton disposed of surrounded by broken shards of plexiglass, Triple H entered the ring to help Batista out with eliminating Edge. The Canadian was resilient enough to dodge the two brutes' attempts to grab him and was able to take out Batista with a quick Spear. As he went for the cover, Edge was dragged off of Batista by Triple H and was about to take a Pedigree, but he managed to power out of the move and instead shoved Triple H away and into Shawn Michaels.

Distraught, Michaels appeared to be completely fed up with being thrown around as if he were nothing and balled up a fist. As Triple H turned around and pointed at HBK to stay away, 'The Heartbreak Kid' bounded out of the corner for a Sweet Chin Music attempt on Triple H, but HHH dodged it as Michaels' boot connected with Edge's chin! In a bit of a state of shock, Triple H hesitated for a minute before kneeling over Edge for the pin. It took a shout from the pinner towards Michaels to bring the referee back to his senses as he slowly made the three-count.

*Edge has been eliminated. Batista, Orton and Triple H remain.*

Orton started to come to his senses on the outside and stood up in the broken remains of the vacant pod bloodied. Batista started to stir as well as Triple H exited the squared circle to continue his assault on the outside. Triple H's attempt to throw Orton into the side of the chamber itself was reversed as Orton instead threw his former mentor into the structure. Orton hastily entered the ring and started to beat down Batista, but the recovering brute was able to stand up and go back-and-forth with Orton.

Triple H, enraged, re-entered the ring and tried to help out his Evolution squadmate, but Orton managed to keep both men at bay... that is until Batista was able to take him down with a vicious clothesline. Triple H signaled to Batista that it was time to finally put down their former ally as Batista hoisted Orton up for a Batista Bomb... but Orton was able to slip out of the move and countered with an RKO on Batista! Triple H tried to drive Orton back down to the mat, but Orton was able to counter with another RKO onto Trips! Orton with the quick cover, 1...2...3!

*Triple H has been eliminated. Batista and Orton remain.*

Triple H can't believe and neither can Batista as he realizes he's the last bullet for Evolution. Orton kept his momentum up by stomping away at Batista to keep the bigger man down. Batista's pure strength allowed him to power back up to his feet though and start throwing haymakers Orton's way to bring the match back to an even level. Orton's youthful resilience allowed him to pick up enough momentum to go for another quick RKO, however, he was shoved away and in turn was speared to the mat.

The match proceeded with both men trying to hit their finishing move as quickly as they could with Batista also trying to throw some spinebusters Orton's way as well. Michaels made sure to stay further away from the action so as not to interfere as Orton connected with a rope-hanging DDT to soften Batista up. Orton stalked his prey as he set Batista up for another RKO, but he was shoved away again and driven into the mat with a spinebuster on the rebound! Batista staggered on his feet as he tried to find his balance... and he was successfully able to do so as he managed to grab the former Evolution member and drive him to the mat with a thunderous Batista Bomb as the 33-minute marker rolls by! Cover, 1...2...3! Batista is the NEW World Heavyweight Champion!

RATING: 80

San Juan and the commentary crew can't believe it as Batista has just scored his first singles gold in the WWE by winning the World Heavyweight Championship. 'The Animal' is handed the big gold belt by Michaels as he immediately raises it over his head while posing in the center of the ring. The stunned crowd gives the victorious Evolution member a mixed ovation as Ric Flair meets him halfway back up the entrance ramp. Evolution's unofficial hype man makes sure to remind everybody that the stable said they'd win tonight and that they fulfilled that promise. As both men return behind the curtain, the show draws to a close.
