Sam Houston State represented the Southland in the CBI as a 12 seed and took down 5 seed Troy in the first round but lost to 4 seed Bradley in the 2nd round.

Bradley ended up winning the tournament over 6 seed Akron!

1939-1940 Senior Appreciation Day

We had 4 seniors this year and all of them were on scholarship. Only one played a big role during their time here though and the other 3 all came off the bench.

Our first senior is SF James Reuter from Conroe, Texas. Reuter started 59 games in his career and averaged 9.6 PPG with a career high 12 PPG this season. He also averaged 3.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists. His career highs were 25 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. He was named player of the game 5 times in his career.

Our final senior is PG Tom Johnson from Lubbock, Texas. Johnson played in 59 career games and started only one of them. He averaged 13.1 minutes per game to go along with 3.9 points. His career high was 14 points.

We took a step back this year at 9-20 but I cannot say I am too surprised given that we lost both of our starting big men and weren't able to bring in much to replace them with. It definitely hurt that we had a walk-on freshman starting and that our top two recruits were suspended due to academics to start the season. Things weren't too bad to start the season but we got on long losing streaks where we just looked totally inept at scoring which is something that doesn't surprise me given the lack of developed talent on the team.

As you can see we were 350th in scoring and pretty much absolutely awful in every aspect of the game. The bright side to this is that at least we ended 346 in RPI which is an improvement over last year.

We scheduled another slew of bad teams to try to boost our win totals this year. Hopefully it will help us push closer to an overall winning record but at the very least should keep us out of the dreaded 3-5 win total for the season.

C Terrance Doud has been suspended due to academics. He was unlikely to factor into any games for us anyways.

6th - PG Mark Gagne (FR) - Gagne is not going to be relied on as a scorer but provides solid handles and defense off the bench while having the ability to force a turnover at any moment.

7th - PG Nickolas Toy (SR) - Toy has been demoted to a bench player this season. He will be a reliable senior leader on the floor since our entire starting lineup is all underclassmen.

8th - PF John Gaudette (SR*) - Gaudette is a scorer on the inside. He isn't amazing at it but he can get it done. His defense is lacking which make him and Mitchell polar opposite players.

9th - PF Michael Mitchell (SR) - Mitchell is not a scorer but will be a defensive presence.

10th - SG Jonathan Philip (SR) - Philip has been demoted to the bench and probably won't see all that many minutes this season.

We probably won't ever go much deeper than this unless foul trouble hits. This is definitely the best team we have fielded as far as talent goes. The little "indicators" that are colored next to each player's name showing their current and potential ability have always been red for current for every single player we have had. Only Nickolas Toy and Virgil Yager have had potential higher than orange (both have yellow). This season though we have four players who are Orange and I'm hoping that it will show in the final results. Our defense should be about the same but our offensive ability should be improving a lot. In he past our "Pace" has always been 0 or 1 but this year it is up to 7 as we finally have the pieces to have a little faith in our offense and not just to grind out a low scoring win. I know I am probably just being overly optimistic since I said this last season but I am very excited for this season.

Final Score: UMass Lowell - 76, Abilene Christian - 54. I know this was a blowout but we looked a lot better than last season. Celso Sanz left with patellar tendinitis and will miss 26 days, him being gone hurt. The difference in this game was UMass Lowell hitting 6 threes and us making zero. Robert Smith had 13 points and 2 rebounds. Douglas Arguello had 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists. Chung McLin had 4 points, 1 rebound, and 2 assists. Mark Gagne had 5 points, 1 rebound, and 3 assists. All four of those were players having their debut. We also had 8 steals including 4 by Mark Gagne. The bench had 21 points in this one showing how much they have improved.

November 19, 1940

Abilene Christian (0-1) vs. North Dakota (0-1)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 59, North Dakota - 76. At halftime we had committed 9 turnovers and North Dakota had committed zero. Thankfully we were only down 33-30 at the half after that turnover ratio. Again we looked really good in this one but in the second half North Dakota was in the bonus under 5 minutes in and took 32 free throws. They only made 18 of them otherwise this could have been a much bigger deficit. The turnover margin really killed us in this one. Chung McLin had 19 points, 1 rebound, and 3 assists. Virgil Yager had 10 points and 8 rebounds. The bench had 10 points in this one highlighted by 8 from Mark Gagne.

November 23, 1940

Abilene Christian (0-2) vs. UT-Rio Grande Valley (0-1)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 57, UT-Rio Grande Valley - 60. We looked a lot better than our opposition in this one but the fouls and free throw disparity really hurt us again. Robert Smith had 15 points and 5 rebounds while Douglas Arguello and Chung McLin each had 10 points. The starting lineup and our 6th man combined for 23 fouls.

November 26, 1940

Grand Canyon (0-4) vs. Abilene Christian (0-3)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 59, Abilene Christian - 69. We only committed 6 turnovers in this one and we hit 9 threes! Chung McLin had 18 points and 6 assists (which ties for the most in program history). Robert Smith had 13 points and 5 rebounds and Virgil Yager had 10 rebounds. The bench had 17 points headlined by 10 from Nickolas Toy. This is the Abilene Christian team I am envisioning for our future. This season may have its ups and downs due to the inexperience of the underclassmen but I have faith in these players.

Final Score: Northern Kentucky - 65, Abilene Christian - 57. Virgil Yager had 13 points and the rest of the starters only combined for 16. The bench had 28 points including 12 by Gagne and 10 by Toy. Douglas Arguello left the game with an injury 7 minutes in. He has a torn ligament and will be out for 55 days.

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 43, Darmouth - 74. Absolute embarrassment. This is where I would be fired in real life. We were called for 8 fouls in the first three and a half minutes of the game and had committed 10 fouls to put them in the double bonus before 5 minutes had come off the clock. I am definitely frustrated with the season so far but losing two of our opening day starters definitely has made things even more difficult.

Season Wrapup

Here is how the 1940-1941 season went.

In the Southalnd Conference the player of the year was Senior PF Richard Ansley from Stephen F. Austin who averaged 16.4 PPG and 8.2 RPG. The freshman of the year was PG Daniel Bickford from Texas A&M Corpus Christi who averaged 8.7 PPG, 6.4 RPG, and 2.7 APG. The Coach of the Year was Scott Sanderson from Sam Houston State.

Our freshman SG Chung McLin made the All-Freshman team with his 14.9 PPG, 2.1 RPG, and 1.9 APG.

1940-1941 March Madness!

First up is the West Region. There were a few big upsets in the first round as 13 seed Bowling Green beat 4 seed UNLV, 12 seed Cal State Northridge beat 5 seed Miami, and 11 seed Drake beat 6 seed Illinois. The Bowling Green magic continued in the 2nd round as they beat Cal State Northridge to advance to the Sweet 16 where they lost to 1 seed Wisconsin. 7 seed St. Joseph's was able to knock out 2 seed Arkansas in the 2nd round. Ultimately 3 seed Stanford beat Wisconsin to punch their ticket to the final four!

Next is the Midwest Region. This one only had one first round upset with 12 seed Pacific beating 5 seed Northern Iowa. In the 2nd round though 8 seed Syracuse took down 1 seed Michigan State but lost to 4 seed New Mexico in the Sweet 16. Ultimately 2 seed Arizona beat New Mexico to advance to the final four.

Now the South Region. 1 seed Florida barely pulled off a 5 point victory over 16 seed Howard. Our conference representative Stephen F. Austin lost as a 13 seed to Temple by 23. This first round was very tame and the 2nd round only saw 6 seed Tennessee beat 3 seed Oregon. 1 seed Florida beat Tennessee to advance to the Final Four.

Last up is the East Region. The only first round upset was 10 seed Rider beating 7 seed Tulsa. Rider then lost to 2 seed Kentucky by 6. 6 seed Creighton took down 3 seed Siena and then 2 seed Kentucky while 5 seed Dayton beat 1 seed Connecticut for our Elite Eight matchup. Creighton won that one by 3 to advance to the Final Four!

Florida beat Stanford in the first semifinal by 2 points, and Arizona beat Creighton in the other by 3 points. The championship wasn't quite as thrilling as Arizona took down Florida to win their first national championship!

1940-1941 Senior Appreciation Day

We had 5 seniors this year and they varied in their contributions to the team.

Our first senior is PF John Gaudette from West Grove, Pennsylvania. Gaudette was a grad transfer from Quinnipiac who in his short time at Abilene Christian appeared in 29 games (6 starts) and averaged 2.8 PPG and 2.1 RPG. His career highs were 8 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists. I know his numbers are unspectacular but I actually expected even less of him as a late grad transfer so I was happy with his performance here.

Our 3rd senior is SG Jonathan Philip from Mayer, Arizona. Philip played in 86 games in his career and started 58 of them. He started every game until his senior year where he came off the bench. His first two seasons he averaged 31.5 and 33.3 minutes per game but off the bench his senior year he only averaged 9.8 minutes. His career averages were 7.6 PPG and 2.9 RPG with career highs of 22 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. He was named the player of the game 5 times in his career.

Our 4th senior is SF Nickolas Toy from Santa Fe, Texas. Toy never really developed into his potential but started to reach it as a senior. He played in 88 games and started 61 of them. He averaged 6.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game in his career. His career highs were 19 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists. He was named player of the game twice.

Our final senior is PF Michael Mitchell from Andrews, Texas. Mitchell was a JC player who we recruited and he played two seasons for us. He was the #2,019 overall prospect that year. He appeared in 58 career games and started 29 of them. His career averages were 3.0 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.0 assists. His career highs were 14 points, 13 rebounds, and 3 assists. He was named player of the game 3 times.

Overall this was a disappointing season as we went 9-20 for the second straight year. We made some strides as I noted early but ultimately it was our ugly away performances that cost us dearly. I can't complain about a 7-6 home record when our away record was 2-14. This may be attributed to the young team and should be something we can fix moving forward. One thing to remember is that this season our 6 best players were all freshmen and sophomores. We increased our conference record from 5-13 to 6-12 and were again able to avoid last place (which right now is our Athletic Director's only goal - showing how far we have to go). I know anybody reading would be able to tell I obviously got frustrated during this season with our results and I'm hoping to see some big improvements next year.

We finished dead last in RPI again as we did our inaugural season and this shows why. There aren't many encouraging numbers here and our foul differential was dead last in all of basketball. Again I'm hoping this is attributed to the youth because we had our entire starting lineup in foul trouble in all but one or two games the entire season.

I did not get much of a chance to introduce this class. This year the players interested were not very good so I wanted to bring in two JC players so that we wouldn't have two dead scholarships for two years. I also didn't like the idea of having 5 scholarship players all in one year so wanted to mitigate some of that.

Tony Murray is a defense first big and Joshua Gonzalez is an inside scorer who is not a great defender. He may not end up playing that much due to his defense but the guy can score from the inside. Larry Harris is a graduate transfer who is decent offensively but probably won't see much time.

Last year our recruiting class was fourth in the conference and #147 overall. This year we were dead last in the conference and #340 overall. I took a risk by going after bigger names and it didn't pay off. Thankfully we really will only end up with two freshmen this year on scholarship.

We had some conference movement this year as Belmont and Florida Atlantic swapped conferences. Belmont now joins Conference USA and Florida Atlantic joins the Ohio Valley Conference.

Also some good news for Abilene Christian is that the Athletic Director has informed me that our training facilities will be upgraded for next season. Right now our facilities are at a 0 so that will be nice and helpful for the players in their development.

We have 4 seniors, none of whom should really factor into the team much this season. Yes that is bad because we will be relying on underclassmen, but it also is good because it means that the 4 players we use those scholarships on next year will all be long term upgrades. I will make sure of that as I am not in the business of wasting any scholarships on freshmen. As I have shown in this offseason and last I would rather use scholarships on JC players and grad transfers for a year or two that can be helpful than have 3-4 scholarships go to freshmen that have absolutely zero potential.

Our team needs are definitely big men as well as SF so it is nice to see that there are a good amount of those that are interested in us. We are going to be making a hard push for these guys and instead of trying for the guys with average interest and losing out on them as well as the better guys with high interest we are going to be going after these players. We can't afford a flop of a recruiting class this year (which is what I ultimately feel our last class was). We have 4 scholarships available and I am hoping we can use them wisely. A few of these are JC players but that is not by design and is simply because they may be the best options available to us.

Our schedule is once again a weak one but it is the most difficult one we have scheduled. I'm hoping we can win our games at home and be better on the road. I am full of optimism this season as instead of relying on a strong freshman class we will now be relying on those players as they enter their sophomore season.

8th - PF Celso Sanz (JR) - We all know about Sanz. He is solid defensively and still has a lot of developing to do. Hopefully he can blossom this year and next.

9th - C Joshua Gonzalez (FR) - Gonzalez is a great inside threat and is a great passer for a big man. His rebounding is a work in progress though.

10th - SF Larry Harris (SR*) - Harris is a solid shooter who will be called upon whenever Smith comes out of the game.

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 71, Abilene Christian - 67. I was very proud of us in this one as we only lost by 4 but went 8-16 from the free throw line and we allowed 17 offensive rebounds. We won the turnover margin +5 (9 to 14) which helped us keep it close. Chung McLin had 21 points and 5 assists while Virgil Yager had 14 points. In his first game Lesley Franklin had 6 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists.

November 18, 1941

Maryland-Eastern Shore (1-0) vs. Abilene Christian (0-1)

Final Score: Maryland-Eastern Shore - 61, Abilene Christian - 76. We were +7 in turnover margin (12 to 19) and were able to pull out a comfortable victory despite going 24-37 from the free throw line. So far we look much more competent than last year. I think I have failed to realize that even though we have gotten better the teams around us have gotten better as well. Robert Smith had 25 points and Virgil Yager had 11 before leaving with a pulled groin which will cause him to be day-to-day. Mark Gagne left with a sprained wrist and will be out for around 9 days. Douglas Arguello came up huge off the bench with a double-double! He had 16 points, 10 rebounds, and 3 assists. 7 of his rebounds were on the offensive glass. The bench had 25 points in this one and it was a true team effort.

November 22, 1941

Abilene Christian (1-1) vs. Bethune-Cookman (0-1)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 75, Bethune-Cookman - 84. We were -1 in the turnover margin (14 to 13) but it was ultimately free throw shooting that cost us as we went 15-21 (71%) and shot 27% from 3 while they shot 35%. Chung McLin had 18 points and 4 assists. Mark Gagne played through his injury to score 15 points and 4 assists.

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 62, Bryant - 73. We continue to beat ourselves as this time we shot 62% from the free throw line and allowed 8 three pointers and Robert Smith went an ugly 3-16 from the field. Chung McLin had 22 points and Lesley Franklin had 10 rebounds. Their bench had 30 points which is how they won this one.

Recruiting News

We have two commitments already! SF Sancho Pastor from Clyde, Texas and SG Joseph Hill from Stephensville, Texas. Pastor is a 2 star recruit and #509 overall who has the potential to be a great inside scorer but isn't great on the defensive side of things. Hill is a 3 star recruit and #317 overall. He is a great get and although he doesn't fit a huge position of need he is going to be a great scorer and defender. He is best when the ball is in his hand only when he's shooting as he is an awful ball-handler.

Abilene Christian (1-3) vs. UMass-Lowell (1-3)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 69, UMass Lowell - 56. Robert Smith had 15 points with 6 rebounds but the real star was Mark Gagne with 16 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, and 4 steals. Douglas Arguello gave us 5 points and 7 rebounds off the bench. We had 14 offensive rebounds in this one and we were able to win despite going 1-13 from 3 and only 8 assists (to their 11). We were +6 in the turnover margin (9 to 15) and pulled out a big win on the road.

December 5, 1941

Abilene Christian (2-3) vs. Grambling State (1-4)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 64, Grambling State - 63. With 30 seconds left and a 1 point lead Mark Gagne missed both free throws after a foul but got the rebound. Then before he could be fouled again Virgil Yager was called for an illegal screen. It looked like we had thrown the win away but Grambling State was unable to get a shot off so we preserved our lead that we worked so hard to throw away. We were called for 16 first half fouls which put us in a lot of trouble and a big deficit early and is the only reason that one was even close to begin with. Chung McLin had 15 points and both Robert Smith and Mark Gagne had 9 points. We allowed 14 offensive rebounds in this one including a lot in the final few minutes that allowed Grambling State to comeback. We were -2 in turnover differential (15 to 13) despite having 8 steals to their 3. We were turning the ball over often in this one and it made it hard to get momentum. Nevertheless we were able to still win the game and get our 2nd road win of the season. We still are not a great team but I think it is clear that we are much improved as last season we didn't get our 2nd road win until February, 21 games into the season. Hopefully we can get at least one more by then.

December 9, 1941

Campbell (0-6) vs. Abilene Christian (3-3)

Final Score: Campbell - 69, Abilene Christian - 77. We were +5 in the turnover margin (16 to 21) and this one was only close due to us letting a 19 point lead with 9 minutes left turn into a 6 point lead with 2 minutes left. We went 12-24 from the free throw line this game including missing the front end of six one-and-one's. Robert Smith had 19 points and 5 rebounds and Chung McLin had 17 points and 5 rebounds. Smith went 8-15 from the floor and McLin went 7-20 so although they scored a lot they were inefficient. Virgil Yager had 12 rebounds in this one and we have what I believe is our first ever winning record!

Abilene Christian (4-3) vs. Mississippi Valley State (0-6)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 69, Mississippi Valley State - 64. We let a 15 point lead get down to a one possession game but we were able to hold on for the win. Robert Smith had 18 points and Chung McLin had 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. We let up 13 offensive rebounds in this one which was a big part of their comeback. We were -2 in turnover differential (12 to 10).

Abilene Christian (5-3) vs. Dartmouth (2-6)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 71, Dartmouth - 70. Mark Gagne had 18 points and Chung McLin had 16. Lesley Franklin had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

North Carolina Central (3-7) vs. Abilene Christian (7-3)

It always takes two of three things that would normally happen maybe once a year for us to lose. In this one they shot over 75% from three, had a 5 point play, and missed 3 free throws after a foul just to get the rebound and then make a 3 pointer anyways. These are things that might happen once in a season (and usually not even that often) and are the things that are happening every single game against us. Never for us but always against us.

Series is over. This game is a joke and absolutely awful.
