A New Career at Abilene Christian

Recommended Posts

Normally when I start a new dynasty I use Grand Canyon Univesity but this time wanted to start with a new school and chose Abilene Christian due to them also being new and because they were in a bigger conference which is something I was looking for. It has been probably close to a year since I have played but basketball season has me back and interested.

We are starting in the 1938-1939 season as that was the first season that had a national championship in real life. Instead of replaying that version of history we will start with a modern day setup with all 4 postseason tournaments and the 3 point line turned on for our entire history. Ratings are 1-100 and real coaches should be enabled and I believe I had edited everything for their career wins and losses to be 0 so that we truly are starting from scratch.

Preview:

The Abilene Christian Wildcats are in the Southland Conference. We have a team prestige of 0 and the conference has a total of 13 teams with Stephen F. Austin having the highest prestige at 53. I believe our conference has a prestige of 0 and it will be fun to see if we can turn Abilene Christian into a team that has any level of success.

Preseason Actions

The first order of business is hiring our assistant coaches! We have a total budget of $150,000 so we will go for $30,000 for each coach and use the rest for recruiting. Our first two coaches signed pretty early but the last one took a while and as a result we got a bargain.

Recruiting Director: Gregory Gullett (Lipscomb University)

Lead Scout: Coleman Johnson (Cornell University)

Coaching Assistant: James Hill (Fairfield University)

Coleman Johnson is an elite scout and is much too good for our program but we got a bargain on him. Gullett and Hill are both mediocre and the type of people I expected to sign.

Next on the agenda is setting up our schedule as well as perusing the roster. The first year will probably be our worst season as the roster will be very poor and hopefully we can see continued and sustained success.

1938-1939 Roster Preview

Here is the roster for you 1938 Abilene Christian Wildcats! Our team is made up of a lot of local "talent" with 12 players from Texas. The 3 out of state players are from Minnesota, Kansas, and Arizona. We will be trying to tap into the Texas pipeline in recruiting but ultimately will take the best talent no matter where they are from. You can see that we currently have 3 seniors, 4 juniors, 4 sophomores, and 4 freshman. Since the beginning of this post as well I have decided to cut both of our non-scholarship players in Edgar Barrios and Brian Johnson. So we may end up with two walk-ons this year and will keep those spots revolving every year until we are able to find anybody who can potentially help us out at some point.

Next I want to give a preview of our 20 player call list. We don't have any preference as far as position goes as we are just trying to get any type of talent in here. Right now there are three players with high interest that are 3 stars and a few 2 stars with high and very high interest. There also are some 1 star guys on our call list that we will be scouting who put up big numbers in highschool. We will see if those big numbers and low star rating was due to poor competition or due to bad initial scouting. Hopefully we can find a few hidden gems. 12 of the people on our call list are from Texas and 3 are from Oklahoma so 75% of our call list is very local. Only one is international which is a player from Canada which is nice because scouting international players is costly.

Great to see two dynasties being posted simultaneously on the forum; I'm following both. Like you I still go back to this fabulous game after large time gaps. A shame Brian didn't get to develop some of his ideas to elevate this game even further. Still delighted though with what it offers.

I agree with your initial recruiting strategy to get some talent on the roster regardless of position. Obviously if you don't manage to recruit any big men this year, you will have a challenge next season with three of your four inside men graduating. Of course you will need to address that at some point, but the time to judge is in four years time when your roster consists of all your own recruits.

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 54, Abilene Christian - 43. We were down by 20 in the first half and made it a single digit game late in the 2nd half but couldn't make a full comeback. The fouls hurt us as in the second half we committed 8 and they committed 0. Michael Martinez and Michael Rodriguez both had 8 points and Rodriguez also had 8 rebounds. We didn't play great in this one but after scoring only 2 points in the opening 8 minutes things got a lot better as the game went on.

Abilene Christian (0-1) vs. Maryland Eastern Shore (0-0)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 46, Maryland Eastern Shore - 62. We were thoroughly beaten again as we couldn't stop any sustained run by the opponent. So far this season we have made a total of one 3 pointer on 17 attempts and it was by our center (whose 3 point rating is a 4 out of 100). Hopefully we stop taking the 3 as any of those shots have turned into wasted possessions. There were certainly positives from this game but foul trouble did us in again. Michael Martinez had 10 points and 7 rebounds while Michael Rodriguez had 8 points and 10 rebounds. Jonathan Philip tacked on 10 points of his own. Nickolas Toy has been a disappointment through 2 games so far and we need to see more from him.

Abilene Christian (0-2) vs. SIU-Edwardsville (0-0)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 43, SIU-Edwardsville - 41. We get our first win in program history! Jonathan Philip was the player of the game with 16 points and 3 rebounds. Nobody else had more than 6 as he carried the team on the offensive side of the ball. Michael Rodriguez helped out with 14 boards including 6 on the offensive glass. Our lead stretched to 14 at one point but we were unable to keep it large but never trailed in the entire game.

November 22, 1938

Abilene Christian (1-2) vs. North Carolina Central (0-2)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 55, North Carolina Central - 45. This team may not be the most skilled but they play with a lot of heart. In this one we committed 14 turnovers while NC Central committed only 6. We out-rebounded them 45-21 though, including an astounding 17 offensive rebounds - and those offensive rebounds were the reason we came back and won this game. Michael Rodriguez recorded the first double-double in program history with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Michael Martinez had 7 points and 11 rebounds while James Reuter and Jonathan Philip both had 10 points. This was a true team effort as it also included 12 points off the bench. We were down throughout most of this game but I was proud of the team because of how hard they played, I didn't expect it to turn into a win but am ecstatic that it did.

November 25, 1938

Omaha (0-3) vs. Abilene Christian (2-2)

Final Score: Omaha - 42, Abilene Christian - 49. James Reuter led the way with 16 points and 6 rebounds and Michael Rodriguez added on 8 points to go along with 8 boards. We didn't play our best game in this one, evidenced by the 17 turnovers but thankfully Omaha committed 17 as well. This one gets us to a winning record and although all our opponents have been awful it at least feels good to get some wins strung together.

Abilene Christian (3-2) vs. Northern Kentucky (0-4)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 56, Northern Kentucky - 52. Michael Martinez led the way with 14 points while Jonathan Philip had 12. Michael Rodriguez pulled down 8 rebounds and we were able to secure the win and overcome 14 turnovers. This 4 game win streak has been great for team morale.

Abilene Christian (4-2) vs. NJIT (0-5)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 56, NJIT - 61. Our ability to score is not in question but it is the turnovers as we had 19 in this game. This is while playing at a slow pace as well so it isn't as if we are trying to force the ball and turning things over. Recruiting ballhandlers will be a big part of our future. Nickolas Toy had 19 points to set a school record and James Reuter had 8 points and 7 assists. Our little win streak has come to an end and even though we lost it was a close game that came down to a 1 point game in the final minute.

December 7, 1938

UMass Lowell (0-7) vs. Abilene Christian (4-3)

Final Score: UMass Lowell - 55, Abilene Christian - 64. I am so proud of the team after this one! We were down 31-17 at the half and fought back for a huge comeback! Then with 9 minutes in the second half and down 49-35 we went on a 19-0 run to take a 54-49 lead and hold on for the victory. I was absolutely amazed as it looked like we were toast in this one but the boys really fought back. We got into foul trouble early as four of our starters ended the game with four fouls, so the bench saw a lot of minutes and produced with 27 points including a career high 10 for Ali Morales. Jonathan Philip added on 13 points and James Reuter had 10. Michael Rodriguez finished with 8 points to go with 13 rebounds. This one could be a huge momentum builder moving forward and a 19-0 run is one of the biggest runs I have ever witnessed.

December 12, 1938

Abilene Christian (5-3) vs. Bryant (0-7)

Final Score - Abilene Christian - 51, Bryant - 61. The refs were blowing the whistle early and often as this one saw 26 fouls in the first half. The fouls were aplenty but this one came down to turnovers and how we made 17 compared to Bryant's 10. Nickolas Toy and Jonathan Philip both had 11 points and Michael Martinez had 9. This one was disappointing and further reinforces our need to cut down on turnovers next season.

December 17, 1938

North Dakota (1-7) vs. Abilene Christian (5-4)

Final Score: North Dakota - 51, Abilene Christian - 46. Turnovers were big again as we committed 17 to their 12. Free throws were big as well as we shot 7 to their 34. Jonathan Philip had 11 points and Michael Rodriguez had 8. The bench had a solid game with 19 points and had a very solid game.

December 21, 1938

Abilene Christian (5-5) vs. Nicholls (0-8)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 43, Nicholls - 54. We had 17 turnovers again in this game (compared to only 12 made field goals). Nickolas Toy had 11 points and Jonathan Philip had 9. Michael Rodriguez had 12 rebounds including 7 on the offensive side. This was a rough start to conference play but with our turnover total it could have been a lot uglier.

December 24, 1938

Abilene Christian (5-6) vs. Howard (0-9)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 38, Howard - 64. We made 13 field goals and committed 16 turnovers as those again came up big and cost us dearly. Jonathan Phillip had 8 points and Michael Rodriguez had 7 rebounds. This one was a very rough game and we hope we can bounce back soon!

December 28, 1938

Abilene Christian (5-7) vs. Stephen F. Austin (6-4)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 44, Stephen F. Austin - 49. Stephen F. Austin had 5 steals but we committed 19 turnovers. I am actually very excited for the future as we are having a lot of close games and once these turnovers decrease we will be looking very good, and with a lot more talent. Jonathan Philip had 12 points and Nickolas Toy had 10 points. Philip also had 8 rebounds and went 8-8 from the free throw line and we went 16-18 from the free throw line. Our 19 turnovers dwarfed our 14 made shots in this one.

December 31, 1938

New Orleans (2-9) vs. Abilene Christian (5-8)

Final Score: New Orleans - 42, Abilene Christian - 50. We only had 9 turnovers in this game which was a huge contributor to our win! Jonathan Philip had 16 points with 7 rebounds and 2 assists en route to player of the game honors. Michael Rodriguez had 11 points and 6 rebounds. The bench had 10 points in this game and really helped us out.

We have our first recruit! PG Douglas Arguello from Sunray, TX has decided to play for Abilene Christian next year. He is a plus defender with the potential to be a very good jump shooter. His defense is already well developed which will help him see playing time.

We had another scholarship offer out to PG Van Eliason but he declined our scholarship offer and committed to North Texas.

January 4, 1939

Northwestern State (8-4) vs. Abilene Christian (6-8)

Final Score: Northwestern State - 49, Abilene Christian - 60. We did commit 13 turnovers in this one but Northwestern State committed 15. Michael Rodriguez was the player of the game with 14 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Jonathan Phillip had 13 points and Nickolas Toy had 11 points.

January 7, 1939

Abilene Christian (7-8) vs. Sam Houston State (11-2)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 44, Sam Houston State - 60. We were outclassed by a much better team in this one as we committed 16 turnovers to their 8. Nickolas Toy led the way with 8 points and Michael Rodriguez had 11 rebounds but outside of those numbers nobody else had much of a great performance.

January 14, 1939

Central Arkansas (5-11) vs. Abilene Christian (7-9)

Final Score: Central Arkansas - 43, Abilene Christian - 53. We had 18 turnovers in this one but were able to overcome them as Tom Johnson came up huge off the game with 10 points and being perfect from the field en route to player of the game honors. Jonathan Philip also had 11 games and 8 rebounds and Michael Rodriguez had 7 rebounds.

January 21, 1939

Southeastern Louisiana (6-11) vs. Abilene Christian (8-9)

Final Score: Southeastern Louisiana - 45, Abilene Christian - 42. This one was the most frustrating loss of the year. We lost the turnover battle per usual (13 to 9) but we shot 5-13 from the line including 1-6 in the final 2 minutes. They threw the game away with 4 straight turnovers to end the game but we capitalized off those 4 turnovers for a total of 1 points. Michael Martinez had 9 points but nobody else did much worth mentioning. Even with our limited talent this is one that we quite frankly should have won.

January 25, 1939

Abilene Christian (8-10) vs. McNeese (9-9)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 36, McNeese - 53. This was a rough one as we only scored 36 points and committed an ungodly 24 turnovers! The bench actually outscored the starters 22 to 14 and Tom Johnson had a team high 9 points. Michael Martinez led the team with 7 rebounds and we again see that the turnovers were too much to overcome as we had twice as many turnovers as made shots (12).

January 28, 1939

Abilene Christian (8-11) vs. Houston Baptist (1-17)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 70, Houston Baptist - 47. This was our best game of the season so far as we played great as a team. We limited turnovers by only committing 12 (Houston Baptist committed only 9). Jonathan Philip had a game-high 21 points while Michael Rodriguez filled the stat sheet with 7 points, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists. James Reuter and Nickolas Toy both added on 11 points of their own.

Recruiting News

Not much recruiting news right now. We have offers out on two Power Forwards, Michael Mitchell and Virgil Yager. Mitchell is 6'6" and is a JC player. He is not much of an offensive threat but is a defensive specialist who should lock down his defender. He also is a menace on the offensive glass. Virgil Yager is 6'10" and from Oklahoma. He is a triple threat as he is effective from the inside, from behind the arc, and is a terrific passer. He is competent on the defensive side of the ball where his best quality is his ability to block shots at a high rate.

Abilene Christian (9-11) vs. New Orleans (4-15)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 61, New Orleans - 52. We only committed 7 turnovers in this one and got a huge road win to move us to .500 in conference play this season. So far we have had some rough games but we have exceeded my expectations in conference play! Michael Martinez was the player of the game with 15 points and 7 rebounds. James Reuter had 13 points and we finished strong to end up with the victory.

Team News

Unfortunately Michael Rodriguez was injured in the New Orleans game and suffered a broken foot. He will be out for 56 days which looks like it will be for the remainder of the season. Henry Kozak will replace him in the lineup and that loss is a big blow to the rest of our season.

February 4, 1939

Nicholls (3-17) vs. Abilene Christian (10-11)

Final Score: Nicholls - 53, Abilene Christian - 56 in OVERTIME! Tom Johnson hit a 3 with 16 seconds left to tie this one and send us to overtime at 45 apiece. This one was our first overtime game of the year and was a thriller! We could have secured the win easily in overtime but our free throw shooting really let us down as we went 17-28 in the game from the line. Nickolas Toy had 15 points with 5 rebounds and Michael Martinez had 10 points and 6 rebounds. We only turned the ball over 10 times which is pretty impressive since this game included an overtime. This win gets us back to a .500 overall record on the season and gives us a winning record in conference play! Also the 3 game win streak is a nice look.

Sam Houston State (20-2) vs. Abilene Christian (11-11)

Final Score: Sam Houston State - 65, Abilene Christian - 51. We got out to an early 12 point lead which was surprising but we were unable to keep the lead. Until the final 2 minutes we were never down by more than 7 points and this one was a lot closer than the final scoreline shows. Michael Martinez had 12 points and 8 rebounds while James Reuter had 9 points and 5 boards. The bench had 15 points in this one and were huge in keeping us in the game.

Stephen F. Austin (15-7) vs. Abilene Christian (11-12)

Final Score: Stephen F. Austin - 77, Abilene Christian - 37. We had 18 turnovers in this one but we were thoroughly outclassed in every aspect of the game. Stephen F. Austin only made 6 more shots than us but attempted 45 free throws. Jonathan Philip had 10 points and Michael Martinez had 8. Hopefully we can right the ship in the second half of the month after these two losses to good teams.

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 54, Southeastern Louisiana - 50. Jonathan Philip led the team with 15 points while James Reuter had 11 and Nickolas Toy had 10. Henry Kozak led the team with 9 rebounds. This was the bounceback win we needed!

Abilene Christian (12-13) vs. Central Arkansas (8-17)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 39, Central Arkansas - 73. We started out slow in this one as we it took 11 minutes for us to score our first points and make our deficit 16-2 and it never got any better from there. We had 15 turnovers and 17 rebounds to their 34. Jonathan Philip had 10 points and nobody else had more than 6 as we were humbled by a very bad Central Arkansas team. Nickolas Toy also sprained his ankle and is day-to-day for a week.

Incarnate Word (1-25) vs. Abilene Christian (12-14)

Final Score: Incarnate Word - 59, Abilene Christian - 56. Man this was brutal. I'm trying to remind myself that this is a throwaway season but taking tough losses to bad teams still hurts. Foul trouble has been what has killed us these past few games as Incarnate Word shot 35 free throws in this one. James Reuter tried to win this one for us with 21 points and Michael Martinez had 10 points and 7 rebounds.

Abilene Christian (12-15) vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi (17-10)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 41, Texas A&M Corpus Christi - 72. We couldn't stop a high powered Corpus Christi team as the only player with a solid statline was Henry Kozak with 10 points and 6 rebounds. The bench came up with 15 points in this one and we have had a rough end to the season.

Lamar (17-11) vs. Abilene Christian (12-16)

Final Score: Lamar - 67, Abilene Christian - 50. This one was never really any close as we played a team much better than us. Nickolas Toy had 17 points and James Reuter added 10 of his own. This was a really awful end to the season for us as we gained momentum and then ended it with 3 blowout losses and an embarrassing loss to a team that only won one other game all season long.

We finished 8th in the conference which is way better than what I expected at the beginning of the season but ended up being a bit of a disappointment after our strong start to conference play. Also finishing 8th is important as in the Southland conference only 8 teams make the conference tournament.

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 32, Texas A&M Corpus Christi - 59. Our slide continues as we end the season on a 5 game losing streak.
March Madness

March Madness!

Here are the screenshots from the inaugural NCAA tournament. Good luck to all of the participants and may the best team win!

First up is the West Region

<a href="https://imgur.com/cbVvsqX"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/cbVvsqXl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

This region didn't get too crazy as the biggest upset in the first round was 11 seed Tulsa beating 6 seed Marquette. 4 seed Miami of Ohio was able to add on to their unbeaten season with a win over 13 seed New Mexico State but fell to 5 seed UNLV in the second round. UNLV then followed that with a victory over 1 seed Michigan State to get to the elite eight where they lost to 2 seed Arizona. Congratulations to the 2 seed Arizona Wildcats on making the Final Four!

Next up is the Midwest Region:

<a href="https://imgur.com/GKo456W"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/GKo456Wl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

1 seed Butler had some trouble with 16 seed Montana in the first round but was able to come away with a 7 point victory. After that it was no surprise that 8 seed Illinois knocked them out in the second round. Our representative Sam Houston State was knocked out by 4 seed North Carolina in the first round by a score of 102-49 which was definitely not a good look for the conference. There was not a single upset in the first round of this region and even the sweet 16 featured the 2, 3, 4, and 8 seeds. In the elite eight 2 seed Temple took down 4 seed North Carolina to advance to the Final Four!

Next up we have the South Region!

<a href="https://imgur.com/u1txDy7"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/u1txDy7l.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

This one had some first round upsets as 9 seed George Mason took down 8 seed Old Dominion, 12 seed Texas beat 5 seed Memphis, 10 seed Kent State beat 7 seed Illinois State, and 11 seed NC State beat 6 seed Creighton. The 2nd round had some crazy results as well, as 1 seed Kentucky beat George Mason 73-37 and 2 seed Duke beat Kent State 83-37. Texas pulled off the upset of 4 seed UCLA to make it to the sweet sixteen where they eventually fell to Kentucky. 3 seed Oklahoma then toppled Kentucky to advance to the Final Four!

Last we have the East Region!

<a href="https://imgur.com/fDXOvzt"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/fDXOvztl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

This region had our biggest upset to date which was 14 seed Austin Peay beating 3 seed Dayton 59-58! Unfortunately Austin Peay was unable to continue that success as they lost to 6 seed West Virginia by 6 in the next round. The rest of this region was pretty standard and in the end 4 seed Connecticut beat 2 seed Louisville to punch its ticket to the Final Four.

Now for the Final Four!

<a href="https://imgur.com/OVrCESH"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/OVrCESHl.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

3 seed Oklahoma beat 2 seed Arizona in the first game while 4 seed Connecticut beat 2 seed Temple in the second. Oklahoma won a thriller of a championship game by the score of 69-67 and I would like to congratulate the Oklahoma Sooners on winning the inaugural NCAA championship!

Congratulations to Drexel for beating Charlotte and winning the Inaugural CIT! The Southland Conference had three teams that made it. Stephen F. Austin made the tournament as the 1 seed but lost to Lehigh in the first round and Lamar made it as a 8 seed and lost by one to South Carolina State. Our 3rd representative was 10 seed Texas A&M Corpus Christi who lost in the first round to Toledo.

Him and Michael Martinez made up our two starting big men this year and losing both of them will be tough.

This season we went 12-17 which doesn't sound great but is a lot better than what I expected given the lack of talent on the roster. We were one of the lowest scoring teams in all of basketball so finding some offense for the future is definitely going to be important. Our win total is a bit inflated since we scheduled only the worst of the worst, but right now winning easy games is a lot better for our future than losing hard ones.

As you can see here we were 346th in points scored and in the 300's in a lot of other categories as well. The two bright spots were that we were #1 in the country in assists against us and #3 in the country in opponents 3 point percentage. None of these matter much though and are simply due to the fact that we played teams so bad that they couldn't hit 3's or generate many assists.

We have 4 seniors this year, and only one of those seniors is someone who will be truly important to us this year in James Reuter. We will be recruiting aggressively as we have 4 scholarship spots to fill. We also have two walk-ons, C Celso Sanz from Bella, Texas and C Terrance Doud from Tracy, California. Both of these guys have the potential to be solid defenders but neither will ever make much of an impact on offense.

Our schedule is not as bad as last year but we still tried to schedule just about the worst teams out there so that we could continue to pick up victories as right now that matters more than having a tough schedule and only winning 4-5 games.

Here is our starting lineup for the 1939-1940 Season:

C: Virgil Yager (FR)

PF: Michael Mitchell (JR)

SF: James Reuter (SR)

SG: Douglas Arguello (FR)

PG: Nickolas Toy (JR)

6th - SG Tom Johnson (SR)

7th - SG Jonathan Philip (JR)

8th - C Henry Hughes (SO)

9th - PG Ali Morales (SR)

10th - PF Charles Hurley (SR*)

This roster is probably about the same talent-wise as last year. We have 3 new players (2 freshmen) in the starting lineup but I'm not sure that at their current stage of development Yager and Mitchell will be better than Rodriguez and Martinez were last year.

Team News:

PF Virgil Yager and PG Douglas Arguello have both been suspended for the first semester of the year due to poor academics. In January they can be re-evaluated. In light of this we have decided to redshirt Arguello. Yager would not accept a redshirt so he will play when he is academically eligible. Tom Johnson and Jonathan Philip will be taking over the SG position and Celso Sanz will replace Yager.

Maryland is the preseason #1. Michigan State and Duke also received first place votes.

Grand Canyon (0-0) vs. Abilene Christian (0-0)

Final Score: Grand Canyon - 38, Abilene Christian - 39. We were down 18-10 at halftime in what was a brutally low scoring game of awful basketball. Nickolas Toy scored to give us the lead with 6 seconds left on a great pass from Ali Morales and we were lucky to get out of this one with a win. We were 10-21 from the free throw line which is why this one was so close. Celso Sanz had 8 points and 7 rebounds in his debut and Michael Mitchell had 6 points and 9 rebounds.

Abilene Christian (1-0) vs. NJIT (0-1)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 55, NJIT - 57. Instead of holding for the final shot we missed with 11 seconds left and let NJIT come down and hit a buzzer beater. This one was a bit frustrating as we got out to a double digit lead but then went on a huge scoring drought. The bright side is that this team does look more competent than last season, even if only by a little. James Reuter had 14 points but they weren't enough. The bench came up big in this one for us with 19 points, led by 9 from Henry Hughes.

November 20, 1939

Northern Kentucky (0-2) vs. Abilene Christian (1-1)

Final Score: Northern Kentucky - 43, Abilene Christian - 45. This was another low scoring one as we led 16-13 at the half, and interestingly enough all 5 of our starters had exactly 2 points at halftime. Man these have been some close games to start the season! James Reuter had 14 points and Michael Mitchell had 10 rebounds while Celso Sanz had 6 boards to go with 8 points. The bench had 11 points in this one. Celso Sanz fractured his nose in this one and will be day-to-day for 5 days.

Abilene Christian (2-1) vs. Sacramento State (2-1)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 47, Sacramento State - 33. James Reuter had 13 points and Nickolas Toy had 9. Michael Mitchell had 6 rebounds and both Reuter and Jonathan Philip had 5 rebounds. An interesting statline in this one was Russ Kittle of Sacramento State fouled out in only 5 minutes of play!

Final Score: North Dakota - 45, Abilene Christian - 56. James Reuter had 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 3 assists in player of the game honors. We were able to comfortable win this one despite committing 19 turnovers to their 9. Jonathan Philip added on 13 points and Celso Sanz had the best game of his young career with 9 points and 13 rebounds. Charles Hurley left this game with a fractured jaw and will miss 17 days.

Recruiting News

We have two commitments for next season!

SF Robert Smith from Abilene, Texas is our first recruit! Smith is a polished inside threat with the potential to be elite, as well as be above average beyond the arc, handling the ball, and on defense. He is a 2 star recruit and #615 in the nation.

PG Mark Gagne from Whiteface, Texas is our second recruit! Gagne is a good jump shooter whose value is in his ball handling and distribution skills. Gagne rarely commits turnovers and should be able to rack up a ton of assists. He is a good defender but is elite when it comes to forcing turnovers. He is a 2 star recruit and #725 in the nation.

PG Jose Same has declined our scholarship and has decided to attend Weber State.

Abilene Christian (4-1) vs. UMass Lowell (0-5)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 40, UMass Lowell - 56. We were absolutely awful in this one as we shot 50% from the line and went 1 of 12 from three. We just couldn't make any shots and shot 33% to their 47%. The crazy thing to is we only had 8 turnovers in this one - which is a rarity in one of our losses.

Abilene Christian (4-2) vs. Cal State Bakersfield (0-5)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 48, Cal State Bakersfield - 55. We only committed 11 turnovers in this one but our inability to make free throws or many shots in general cost us again. Nickolas Toy had 18 points with 7 rebounds and tried to will the team to victory.

December 9, 1939

Abilene Christian (4-3) vs. Maryland-Eastern Shore (1-6)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 45, Maryland-Eastern Shore - 63. Our inability to go on any scoring spree so far this season has cost us dearly. Any deficit by more than 6 points has usually meant that the game is over for us. James Reuter had 15 points and Michael Mitchell had 6 points with 8 boards.

December 15, 1939

Abilene Christian (4-4) vs. Bryant (2-7)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 46, Bryant - 49. In the second half we went from the 13:34 until the 2:15 mark without making a shot. It is amazing we lost by only 3 with that awful of a stretch, but my initial analysis that this team was improved was a bit premature, but a big part of that is the two scholarship freshmen we brought in have not been able to see the court. James Reuter had 16 points and 6 rebounds and Celso Sanz had 9 rebounds.

December 19, 1939

Abilene Christian (4-5) vs. North Carolina Central (3-6)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 54, North Carolina Central - 67. Another long scoring drought did us in. James Reuter had 20 points and Nickolas Toy had 12 but nobody else could get much going. Celso Sanz had 9 rebounds but it is scary how outmatched we have been by the worst teams in basketball. With the level we are currently playing at I don't see us winning more than 1 or 2 road games the rest of the season.

December 23, 1939

Omaha (2-9) vs. Abilene Christian (4-6)

Final Score: Omaha - 58, Abilene Christian - 46. Earlier I said we may only win 1-2 road games the rest of the season. I don't think we will win another game this season. Philip and Sanz had 10 points each and Mitchell had 10 rebounds. This team is just not good and has regressed instead of developed.

December 27, 1939

Sam Houston State (9-2) vs. Abilene Christian (4-7)

Final Score: Sam Houston State - 65, Abilene Christian - 39. This was the best team we have played all season so the defeat was not a surprise. Henry Hughes was our leading scorer with 10 points and Michael Mitchell had 6 rebounds. We are currently 349th in the country in points per game. An interesting stat for us this year is we are 1-0 against teams 51-100 in RPI. 3-2 against teams in 101-200. And we are a whopping 0-6 against teams 200+. Our RPI is dead last for a second straight year.

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 56, Lamar - 47. James Reuter had 20 points but this offense is just so bad that wins are hard to come by. Things started out good for us this season but right now all we can do it hope next season gets here.

Recruiting News

C David Pellerin has declined our scholarship offer and will be attending Missouri State. He was someone I didn't expect to get but would have been a huge pickup.

On the other side of things, PG Chung McLin from San Angelo, Texas has committed to us next season! McLin is an all-around scorer who can drive to the hoop as well as hit the mid-range and 3. He is a good ballhandler but isn't much of a distributor. His defense is solid but unspectacular and he is someone who may fit in best as a SG for us instead of PG.

Team News

With the month ending that means the academic suspensions have been finished! Douglas Arguello will remain redshirting to develop his game but Virgil Yager will be inserted into the starting lineup immediately in place of Celso Sanz.

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 66, Incarnate Word - 60 in OVERTIME! Henry Hughes hit a buzzer beater to send us to overtime after Incarnate Word only made one free throw with 9 seconds left to leave us with a chance. Jonathan Philip had 22 points and Celso Sanz played well off the bench with 7 rebounds. Our free throw shooting was huge in this one as we went 22-26 from the line. Michael Mitchell had 8 points and 12 rebounds and in his debut Virgil Yager fouled out with 12 points and 4 rebounds. Eric Newcomer of Incarnate Word had a hell of a game with 29 points as he went 10 of 11 from the field and 7 of 9 from the free throw line. He is a freshman and someone I will dread facing in the future. This is a good start to our "2nd half" of the season with Yager.

Final Score: Northwestern State - 42, Abilene Christian - 51. We overcame 19 turnovers in this one thanks to 17 points from James Reuter and 13 rebounds from Michael Mitchell. The bench had 15 points and Celso Sanz even had 4 assists off the bench. This gets us to .500 in conference play and ties us for 6th place. Texas A&M Corpus Christi is first in the conference at 5-1, and their one loss was to us.

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 78, Southeastern Louisiana - 68. This was probably the best game we've ever played as we scored an unprecedented (for us) 78 points. James Reuter had 25 points and Nickolas Toy was named player of the game with 19 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists. With that win we are up to 4th place in the conference.

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 65, Houston Baptist - 67. We blew a double digit lead due to 16 turnovers including two in the final minute of play. James Reuter had 17 points and Jonathan Philip had 10 points with 7 rebounds. The bench had 17 points in this one but we shot 38% from the field to Houston Baptist's 49%. Final Score: New Orleans - 58, Abilene Christian - 48. James Reuter had 23 points and 7 rebounds but we committed 17 turnovers which did us in. That combined with going 17 for 30 from the free throw line. We find ourselves in a lot of winnable games where we aren't getting beat as much as we are simply just losing them. Michael Mitchell had 11 rebounds.

February 3, 1940

Lamar (7-13) vs. Abilene Christian (8-13)

Final Score: Lamar - 62, Abilene Christian - 51. We were atrocious in this one and did not deserve a win. Tom Johnson had 14 points and Jonathan Philip had 11 points and 7 rebounds.

February 7, 1940

Abilene Christian (8-14) vs. Northwestern State (10-11)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 56, Northwestern State - 75. We were down by double digits almost the entirety of the game. James Reuter had 10 points and Jonathan Philip had 12 points. This loss puts us down to 12th place in the conference.

February 10, 1940

Stephen F. Austin (11-13) vs. Abilene Christian (8-15)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 55, Stephen F. Austin - 70. Virgil Yager had 12 points and Jonathan Philip had 18. The bench came up with 16 points but it wasn't enough to make much of an impact.

February 14, 1940

McNeese (14-9) vs. Abilene Christian (8-16)

Final Score: McNeese - 61, Abilene Christian - 47. Jonathan Philip had 15 points and only one other player topped 6 points. We are on a terrible stretch right now and we are desperately awaiting the end of the season.

February 17, 1940

Abilene Christian (8-17) vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi (11-13)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 54, Texas A&M Corpus Christi - 66. James Reuter had 13 points and Michael Mitchell had 10 rebounds. Our losing streak extends to 8 games and I'm not sure if we'll win another game this season.

February 21, 1940

Nicholls (6-19) vs. Abilene Christian (8-18)

Final Score: Nicholls - 54, Abilene Christian - 49. Jonathan Philip had 12 points, Nickolas Toy had 10, Virgil Yager had 11, and James Reuter had 9. The losing streak has reached nine and puts us to 0-6 this month.

February 28, 1940

Abilene Christian (8-19) vs. Central Arkansas (7-20)

Final Score: Abilene Christian - 60, Central Arkansas - 48. The losing streak comes to an end! James Reuter and Jonathan Philip both had 17 points and Michael Mitchell had 10 rebounds in a game that gives us a one game "lead" over not being last place in the conference. I had much higher hopes for this season but simply avoiding last place is all the Athletic Director wants.

First up is the West region! The first round saw our conference representative McNeese lose in the first round as a 15 seed to 2 seed Wisconsin. 12 seed George Mason beat 5 seed Oregon and 10 seed Marquette beat 7 seed Tulsa. The 2nd round saw 2 seed Michigan State beat 1 seed Wake Forest. Michigan State then beat 4 seed Utah State in the Sweet 16. They then lost to 3 seed Vanderbilt who punched their ticket to the Final Four!

Next up is the Midwest Region. The first round went just about as expected with the only upsets being 11 seed Oklahoma State over 6 seed Memphis and 9 seed Kansas over 8 seed Virginia. Kansas then knocked out 1 seed Dayton in the second round, meaning through the first two regions no 1 seed has advanced to the Sweet 16. Oklahoma State also advanced to the Sweet 16 by beating 3 seed Notre Dame. Kansas was knocked out by 5 seed Michigan but Oklahoma State beat 2 seed Creighton and then beat Michigan to advance to the Final Four as an 11 seed!

<a href="https://imgur.com/aVivr58"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/aVivr58.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

Now on to the South Region. 11 seed Rider beat 6 seed Arkansas, 10 seed Southern Mississippi beat 7 seed USC, and 9 seed Georgetown beat 8 seed UCLA. None of those teams could win in the 2nd round and the Sweet 16 featured the 1, 2, 3, and 4 seeds. 2 seed West Virginia beat 4 seed Davidson in the Elite Eight to punch their ticket to the Final Four!

<a href="https://imgur.com/qzopXp8"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/qzopXp8.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

Finally we have the East Region. 12 seed Syracuse beat 5 seed UAB, 11 seed NC State beat 6 seed Siena, 10 seed Missouri State beat 7 seed UNLV, and 9 seed Saint Joseph's beat 8 seed Villanova. Only one of those teams could pull off a second round upset as NC State beat 3 seed Maryland. Then they beat 2 seed Florida. Then they beat 1 seed Duke to advance to the Final Four!

<a href="https://imgur.com/sGHo1NI"><img src="https://i.imgur.com/sGHo1NI.png" title="source: imgur.com" />

2 seed West Virginia took down 3 seed Vanderbilt and in the battle of the 11 seeds Oklahoma State beat NC State! Amazing to see two 11 seeds make the Final Four. In the championship game Oklahoma State continued their amazing run and beat West Virginia in an absolute thriller winning by the score of 75-73. Congratulations to Oklahoma State!
