Rude attacks Steamboat from behind and begins to stomp on him repeatedly. Rude slides out of the ring and grabs a chair, coming back in. He shoves referee Randy Anderson down as he nails Steamboat in the back, not once but twice! Rude picks Steamboat up and delivers a Rude Awakening! He then drags Steamboat closer to the corner and positions a steel chair around Steamboat's neck. Slowly, Rude climbs to the middle turnbuckle and stands up...

Ross: No! He's going to destroy this man's career!

...when the lights go out...

...and come back on to a giant man standing over Ricky Steamboat and a man standing in the opposite corner encouraging this man...

Ventura: Jim Ross, what the hell is going on?

Rick Rude, completely stunned by The Undertaker's presence, jumps anyway and is caught by the throat and driven to the mat with a choke slam!

Ross: A thunderous choke slam!

Ventura: What the hell is he doing here? Is he here to take out Rude?

At this point, Steamboat has gotten to his knees and sees The Undertaker in the ring. He slowly crawls to the WCW World Championship on the mat and reaches for it at the same as The Undertaker reaches down and grabs it. Steamboat stands to his feet, never letting go of the title as The Undertaker stares him straight in the face, also not letting go.

Ventura: He's after Steamboat, Ross!

Rick Rude comes from the far side, but The Undertaker sees him, letting go of the title and hitting a Big Boot to Rude, which allows Steamboat to roll out of the ring and towards the entrance way. With Rude now out of the ring, The Undertaker snaps his head around towards Steamboat like something you'd see in a horror movie and takes a step towards Steamboat until the other man in the ring, restrains him by showing him an urn. Starrcade 1991 fades to black, with both men staring each other down.

Ted Turner: Dusty, great work on Starrcade. It was named event of the year, a fantastic way to end the year.

Dusty Rhodes: Mr. Turner, it was an excellent show, highlighted by excellent wrestling.

Turner: That it was. Unfortunately Dusty, we didn't end where we wanted, and we're seeing Vince McMahon picking up steam as WWF continues to crush us in the TV and PPV ratings game.

Rhodes: I know, but the wrestling economy is tanking, Ted. We're putting on great shows, but people are not staying interested. Even in Vince.

Turner: We need to spice things up around here, Dusty. We need better. We have a few new guys that we can build around, right? Michaels? Taker? Slaughter?

Rhodes: Ted, let me speak freely, if you will. We don't need to build around these new guys. They are here to help us move forward. We just handed the World title to Ricky. Owen has been more than we could imagine, and the Steiners are really showing us why our tag team division needs more attention. Ted. We have everything we need.

Turner: Good, but I would be lying if I said I am concerned. If we end this next year on the same level as we did this year, we'll need to make some changes.

Rhodes: We'll be ahead of Vince by this time next year, Ted. Believe it baby, we'll be there!

Rick Rude is called to the ring by Eric Bischoff. Bischoff asks Rude his thoughts on Starrcade. Rude rips the microphone from Bischoff's hands and demands The Undertaker come to the ring. Paul Bearer comes to the ring and explains that The Undertaker only does what he tells him, and that's for everyone else's benefit. Rude grabs Bearer and demands The Undertaker. Bearer shrugs free and tells Rude he'll regret this as the Undertaker comes out and into the ring. Rude gets in a couple punches that barely phase The Undertaker, then hits a running clothesline. The Undertaker goes over the top rope and lands on his feet, staring back into the ring at Rude. Rude, in disbelieif steps back a few steps as Bearer encourages The Undertaker to stand down.

I'm puzzled by the main event also. One of the dirt sheet listings was a penalty for booking decisions. All I had was Sting winning via pinfall and the referee replacement, which may have done it. Looking forward to Piper/Rude, though I only have Piper for another month or so, so it will be a quick story.

Just catching up reading this dynasty, but honestly, the penalty for booking decisions is something that I will never understand. I'd really like more in-depth analysis on that

The brawl continues as Flair, Vader and Valentine try to escape the ringside beatdown by entering the ring, but Slaughter, Steamboat and Sting follow. Out of nowhere, Rick Rude hits the ring with a chair and takes out Slaughter and Sting. As he sets up to hit Steamboat, the lights go out. When they come back on, The Undertaker is standing infront of Steamboat. Rude freezes in place. As Slaughter and Sting get back to their feet, slowly Flair, Vader, Valentine and Rude back out of the ring to end the show.
