Title Bout Wrestling

Week 2, January 1997.

Venue: Pengrowth Place [Calgary, Alberta, Canada]

In Attendance: 2,000 [sELL OUT]

Shown on: Alberta on Air and BCB

Rating: .08 [66,240 viewers]

Commentators: Jerome Turner & George DeColt Sr.

Title Bout Wrestling goes live, but unlike last week, it does not star on the announcers. It starts backstage where “The Traditionalist” Eric Tyler is standing backstage. Behind him is the Television Champion, “Iron Fist” Dan DaLay.

YKeyTTx.jpgMLsxKsR.jpg4Qazmj6.jpg

Tyler, “Tonight, the powers that be here in CGC -- and by the powers that be I mean “Whipper” Spencer Marks -- the matchmaker here -- have decided that Dan DaLay has to defend the Television Championship against one of the DeColt brothers. This time, George Junior. Named after his father. It’s unfair. Junior does not deserve a championship opportunity. Who has he defeated this year? What big singles victory does he have? This is Iron Fist Dan DaLay. Look at him. He’s six feet six inches. He’s three hundred thirty pounds. This man is a killer. This man is a monster. He destroyed Alex DeColt and took the Television Championship from him. He left Ted Moore laying as a broken man. He’s going to do the same to Junior. As my father used to say, he’s going to take him out to the woodshed. He’s going to teach him a thing or two about what tough men look like -- and he’s going to do it the way professional wrestling is meant to be done.”

We come right out of the Eric Tyler backstage promo to Jerome Turner and George DeColt Sr. at ringside.

69wksxW.jpgh9bPvwJ.jpg

Turner, “Strong words from Eric Tyler in regards to our main event tonight. Will Iron Fist make another successful defence of his Television Title? Or will George DeColt Jr., named after the man sitting next to me, win his first professional championship tonight and get a measure of retribution for his family?”

DeColt Sr., “I know I’m supposed to be unbiased. I know I’m not supposed to play favorites, but I hope Junior gives Dan DaLay the ass whooping of a lifetime tonight.”

Turner, “Whoah! George. We are on broadcast television. Not cable.”

DeColt Sr., “I know. And I apologize to our broadcast partners, but I can’t stand Dan DaLay, I can’t stand Eric Tyler, I can’t stand the whole School of Tradition and I hope they get what is coming to them starting tonight.”

Turner, “We will find out later, but folks. Coming up after this commercial break is the in ring debut of a man who showed up last week and promised CGC that the Reckoning was here. He’s simply known as Vengeance and he is in action against Howling Dog when we come back”

We smash into the opening video package for Title Bout Wrestling which features shots of all of the DeColt boys, Eric Tyler, Dan DaLay -- and some of the past CGC greats such as Sam Keith, the McWades, the Demons of Rage and the Lords of War -- people who have gone on to fame in other places but can be used to attract eyeballs to the CGC brand. From the opening titles, we go right to break.

Howling Dog versus Vengeance

Coming out of the break, the sound of a War Drum fills Pengrowth Place in downtown Calgary. The man from the Cree tribe, Howling Dog comes out through the entrance curtain. He does a ceremonial war dance on his way to the ring. His name comes from the importance of sled dogs in his Cree heritage. He enters the ring and takes off his entrance attire as he waits what is coming for him.

The lights go out and it is silent. No music. Eerily silent. There is just a lone light centered on the entrance way where the man known simply as Vengeance now stands. He is an impressive sight. A monster of a man with his face painted like a skull. The living embodiment of the Grim Reaper. The Spectre of the Lord’s Vengeance -- where he gets his name.

Vengeance stands in the ring before Howling Dog and he does not move. He does not move when the bell rings and Howling Dog lets out his war cry and comes charging across the ring. He doesn’t move when Howling Dog strikes him the first time. Or the second time. Or the third time. But on the fourth attempt to inflict damage, Vengeance lashes out. A big right hand that lands flush on the jaw and drops Dog to the mat. Vengeance is on the attack now. On the warpath. A destructive force. The match does not last long and it is all Vengeance. It is all Vengeance. He hit a big boot that turned Howling Dog inside out and followed that up with the Vengeance Drop that gets him the victory.

Vengeance defeated Howling Dog in 5:51 by pinfall with a Vengeance Drop.

Vengeance stands over a downed Howling Dog, unmoving. Just staring and we are thrown backstage to where the young woman we met last week when she brought American Buffalo to the ring -- Emma Chase -- is standing by two men we have not yet had the pleasure of meeting.

vvdXZ6v.jpgMLsxKsR.jpggfqPlfg.jpg96ZjWiV.jpg

Chase, “My name is Emma Chase. Last week you met one of my men. One of the representatives of the Chase Agency. You met American Buffalo. Tonight, you meet my tag team. The best tag team in wrestling. Soon to be World Tag Team Champions. “The Complete Package” Brent Hill. “The Human Arsenal” John Anderson. The Machines. Two men who are the very embodiment of professional wrestling. Two men who are supreme athletes and supremely gifted wrestlers. With me guiding their careers, they will soon be at the top. Tonight, they have Flex and Pecs. Two men who do not know what they are in for. Two men who are about to find out exactly what professional wrestling is all about.”

From the promo, we go to commercial break.

Flex & Pecs versus The Machines w/ Emma Chase

Out of break, Flex & Pecs, two young, good looking guys in great shape are on their way to the ring. The women here in Calgary are quite fond of these two, especially when each of them hit the double bicep pose at the same time.

The Machines are out next. They have a completely different vibe than their opponents. Where Flex & Pecs seem like fun-loving guys in great shape, the Machines seem like they are all business. Emma Chase, despite being young herself, is establishing herself as a power broken in CGC by bringing in young talent that is quite capable.

Neither of these teams are particularly well known to the audience in Calgary, so they don’t give a lot of reaction. Flex & Pecs, seem like two guys, at least right now, that are more concerned with their body fat percentage than their fundamentals. Hill and Anderson have never teamed before and it showed that they are still learning how to work with each other.

Flex & Pecs controlled the match early on but were cut off by the Machines who isolated Flex from his partner. They worked him over with some quick tags and some double team moves. They kept the ring cut in half and despite this being their first real tag team experience with one another -- the Machines showed that they have a solid understanding of tag team wrestling.

Flex made the hot tag to Pecs and the two men were able to make a comeback, albeit a short comeback before the Machines took back over the Brent Hill climbed to the top rope and lept off -- getting surprising elevation for a man his size -- on a top rope leg drop that he calls King of the Hill.

The Machines defeated Flex & Pecs in 8:32 when Brent Hill defeated Flex by pinfall with a King Of The Hill.

“The Elation Sensation” Sammy Bach versus “Runaway Train” Barry Bowen w/ Helen Wheels

After the Machines dispatched Flex & Pecs, next up was the young man from CZCW, Sammy Bach. At eighteen years old, Bach was really getting his feet wet as a professional. He had made a couple of appearances for RPW, but had been working full time for the San Diego based CZCW since June of 1996. CGC was his first foray into Canada -- and this was his first match on television ever. His opponent? Former two time CGC World Champion, “Runaway Train” Barry Bowen.

Bach showed some fire early in this short match -- and also showed that he is a young man who is not intimidated, for better or worse. He came right at “Runway Train”, trying to take the big man off his feet, but he was unsuccessful. The former World Champion showed that he is still not a man to be trifled with when he shutdown Bach with a spinebuster that would shatter the spine of a man who was not a trained professional fighter.

Wheels was firmly behind her charge as he lifted Bach up and flung him around the ring several times before hitting him with the Train Wreck [sitout Powerbomb].

Barry Bowen defeated Sammy Bach in 5:32 by pinfall with a Train Wreck.

8x5Bau7.jpg

yeHFqoZ.jpgJiFk67I.jpg

While Bowen celebrates his convincing victory, we are taken backstage to the CGC backdrop where Jack and Alex -- the World Tag Team Champions -- are standing. The two brothers have the World Tag Team Titles draped over their shoulders.

Alex, “Last week, the Soldiers of Fortune made a statement. They laid waste to the American Boys. A good young up and coming tag team. Good guys. Guys who didn’t deserve what the Soldiers of Fortune did to them.”

Jack, “That’s for sure. I know what the Soldiers of Fortune want. They want what the whole School of Tradition wants. They want to get rid of us. They want to get rid of the DeColts and they want our World Tag Team Championship, but we’re not going anywhere. Next week, we’re going to put these belts on the line. We’re going to put them up for grabs against the Soldiers of Fortune right here on Title Bout Wrestling.”

Alex, “So boys. If you want what we’ve got -- next week you’re going to have the chance to take it. “

At the conclusion of the promo, we go to our last commercial break of the evening.

George DeColt Jr versus “Iron Fist” Dan DaLay © w/ Eric Tyler

We come back to from our final commercial break and it is main event time. The Television Championship is on the line. The crowd was firmly behind Junior. He’s the least accomplished of his brothers -- the only one to not have held singles gold in his career. He hasn’t even held tag gold, but he’s also the only one to have wrestled anywhere other than their family promotion. DaLay once again came to the ring dragging the championship behind him -- led to the ring by Eric Tyler. It is a similar sight to last week. DaLay the Goliath being led to the ring by the Philistine. The warrior being sent to battle. Junior this week’s David. Or David hopeful.

This was a fight. Let’s be clear. DaLay is not the most technically proficient worker in the world and Junior is very much like his brothers. Big and handsome and willing to throw hands. And boy did Junior throw hands. But so did DaLay and he is Iron Fist for a reason. His frying-pan sized fist could cave a car door in and Junior is lucky it didn’t cave his face in. Or his ribs. But Junior is DeColt tough. So the more DaLay laid into him, the more Junior got back up. The more DaLay battered him, the more Junior got back up. The more Junior got back up, the louder the crowd got. Particularly the ladies in the crowd. The noise they were making might make you think you were in 1977 and not 1997. DaLay hit a huge choke bomb that got him a near fall, but Junior got his shoulder up and the crowd begged him to get back to his feet. To fight back. To let his hands fly some more. Junior obliges the fans. He pushes himself up. He puts his hands up and DaLay looks at Tyler as if to ask ‘What more is it going to take?’.

The comeback was full of fire and passion. The kind of fire that Western Canada can only see when a DeColt is firing back up. The DeColt fire. Big right hands. A back elbow. An atomic drop. The metaphorical strap had been lowered. Junior backed up and charged forward -- hitting Dan with a big shoulder tackle. Dan staggered but did not fall. Junior opened his right hand and raised it high. He was signalling. Signalling for the move he learned from his namesake. The Iron Claw. Before he could lock it in, Eric Tyler was on the ring apron. The distraction. Junior turned towards him and locked the claw in on the top of Tyler’s head. Tyler screamed in pain and referee Francis Long demanded Junior release Tyler. Junior relinquished his hold, turned around, and immediately got caught with a DaLay Down.

Dan DaLay defeated George DeColt Jr. in 12:03 by pinfall with a DaLay Down after Eric Tyler interfered. Dan DaLay makes defence number 2 of his CGC Television title.

Junior is laying on the mat and Eric Tyler rolls into the ring. He takes his jacket off. He is not happy about having been locked in the Iron Claw. He orders DaLay to lift Junior up. DaLay does as he’s told and Tyler drives a fist into Junior’s head. Then again. He takes his tie off and wraps it around Junior’s throat.

Turner, “Oh come on! That’s enough. The match is over and Eric Tyler is choking the life out of George DeColt Junior. “

The crowd goes wild because CGC World Champion -- Steve DeColt -- is charging towards the ring in his street clothes.

cgNfCjz.jpg

Steve rolls into the ring and DaLay comes charging at him, but Steve hits him with a big right hand and then another and they send DaLay stumbling. Tyler comes charging towards Steve for a clothesline, but Steve ducks and leaps into the air for a gravity-defying dropkick that sends Tyler tumbling out of the ring. Steve turns towards DaLay, but the Television Champion thinks better of continuing the assault.

Title Bout Wrestling goes off the air with Steve checking on his younger brother as Tyler and DaLay fume ringside.

Junior walked out of his father's home office and took a minute to breathe. His father didn't quite read him the riot act or anything like that, but it was definitely a tense conversation. Junior had booked three shows. Two weekly television shows and Elimination. Elimination was hard for Junior to book. He'd only had two weeks to put together some things -- Marks had only really left him with one story to continue. The DeColts and The School of Tradition. That story was obviously the focus of the promotion, but Junior needed more stories than that for a big show and he'd only had two weeks to build them.

His father wanted to know where they were going. What was Junior's long term plan? Where did he want to get to -- so Junior explained. He explained exactly where he wanted to go. He wanted to build Vengeance to be the new Barry Bowen. He knew that Bowen was looking for a major pay day. HGC or SWF. He was already doing shots for the Stones. It wouldn't be long until he made the jump -- and no one could blame him. He was over thirty now. He needed to make as much money as possible.

Eric Tyler was a great talker and a great lead non-monster heel, but he was also working for DAVE which had just been taken over by Phil Vibert and who knew what Vibert would do and how long Tyler would continue to split his time between the East Coast of the United States and Western Canada. DaLay had to be built into a main event level heel. American Buffalo, Rich Money, the Machines... All of them could become strong heels under Emma.

Dad had been happy with what Junior laid out. He approved of the plan and Junior breathed a sigh of relief. He had some time to build now -- and Luck of the Draw, his next big event did not require him to just do six man tags. He could book a proper big event.

Junior walked down the hall to the room his father had given him to be an at home office -- where he could take phone calls and book shows and all of that. It had previously been Steve's room, but Steve had recently moved out into his own place.

Looking down at his desk, Junior looked at the card he had prepared for the upcoming episode of Title Bout Wrestling.

Title Bout Wrestling

Week 3, January 1997.

Venue: Abbotsford Recreation Complex [Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada]

In Attendance: 2,000 [sELL OUT]

Shown on: Alberta on Air and BCB

Rating: .08 [66,240 viewers]

Commentators: Jerome Turner & George DeColt Sr.

Title Bout Wrestling goes live with the camera moving down the entrance ramp and looking at the first few rows of fans in the sold-out Abbotsford Recreation Complex. CGC does not run the biggest venues or big arenas -- so they’re not using a crane, but they use the opening camera shot to give the viewers watching at home on Alberta on Air or British Columbia Broadcasting the sense that CGC is a big deal in Western Canada. The camera makes its way around the ring to the ringside broadcast table where Jerome Turner and George DeColt Sr. are stationed with their monitors in front of them. CGC uses the announce team right at ringside instead of back on the stage or in some far away perch. It’s not a fancy table by any means, just a wooden table with a monitor and space for them to have their notepads, but there they are.

Turner, “Hello everyone and welcome to Title Bout Wrestling! We are coming to you on the heels of Elimination that was just this past Friday. If you were unable to be there live with us, don’t worry. You can order the Home Video Release by going to http://www.cgc.com or by calling 1-833-459-8242. Make sure that the next time Canadian Golden Combat brings Western Canada’s premier brand of professional wrestling to your neck of the woods, you are there live.”

DeColt, “You’re absolutey right, Jerry. Fans, you do not want to miss any live CGC action. At Elimination, The DeColt team of Steve, Jack, and Alex managed to beat The School of Tradition’s Eric Tyler and The Soldiers of Fortune -- getting some retribution.”

Turner, “They did get a measure of retribution, George. Which, as their father I’m sure you were happy to see -- but the war between the DeColts and the School of Tradition did not stop at Elimination. Tonight in our main event, Alex and Jack put the World Tag Team Titles on the line against former champions the Soldiers of Fortune. Plus Dan DaLay defends the Television Championship and so much more.”

DeColt, “Strap yourselves in folks, because you don’t want to miss a second of action tonight on Title Bout Wrestling!”

From the video package, we go to a commercial break.

Coming out of the commercial break, CGC wrestler Jake Sloan -- a veteran of the Canadian wrestling scene who has been a valuable CGC employee -- is headed towards the entrance area. He looks like he is ready for a match. Before he reaches the curtain backstage, he is blindsided by the man known as Vengeance.

ZZn4GiS.jpg

The monster of a man drives his fist into Jake Sloan’s head while backstage personnel scream from the surprise. Vengeance lifts Sloan up and drives him down into the concrete floor with a hard spinebuster. Security is quick to the scene and Vengeance backs off laughing maniacally.

GegwXV8.jpg

We go back to ringside on Jerome Turner and George DeColt, Sr.

Turner, “Someone is going to have to control that monster. That’s the second person he has laid out backstage. I know he’s big and I know he’s intimidating, but someone better do something about him…. We are sorry you all had to witness that. Jake Sloan was scheduled to wrestle Barry Bowen tonight, but obviously, he can’t, so we’re going to take a quick break while someone in the matchmaking office figures out who will be his opponent.

We come back from break for our opening match.

Mario Heroic versus “Runaway Train” Barry Bowen w/ Helen Wheels

Mario Heroic was the lucky man who got to wrestle Barry Bowen. It was not pretty for Heroic -- as he is in the ring with the former two time World’s Champion who came out looking just like a man who has twice been to the top of the mountain. Bowen made short work of Heroic, he dominated the entire match up and ended up hitting a Train Wreck just past four and a half minutes to get the victory. After winning, Bowen roared and then made the universal sign for wanting a championship belt.

“Fabolous” Eddie Chandler versus American Buffalo w/ Emma Chase

Right after the opening match, Eddie Chandler comes down to the ring. Chandler, the man known as “Fabolous” looked ready to go. Then came the master of the Stampede, the man known as American Buffalo with his manager and agent, Emma Chase. She led the big man to the ring. Buffalo and Chandler matched up like oil and water. It was awkward and clunky, but Buffalo did get to showcase his power. Both of these men are young -- Buffalo being twenty-three and Chander being twenty-one so both have bright futures. Chandler got caught in The Stampede and Buffalo got the victory and we went to commercial break.

We come back from break and we are backstage where Steve DeColt is standing. He has the CGC World Heavyweight Championship on his shoulder. He looks very intently at the camera.

S. DeColt, “Eric Tyler. You have been waging war on my family. You have declared war. You have made it clear that the war won’t stop until you get a shot at this.”

Steve pats the World Championship.

S. DeColt, “When I was in school, I remember one of my teachers telling the class that Canadian government policy was to not negotiate with terrorists. I took that to heart. I’ve always believed that no one should get to hold anything hostage and that if you want something you got to earn it. So I tell you what, Eric. I’ll tell you what I’m going to do. I’m going to give you a chance. Next week, right here on Title Bout Wrestling I’m going to give you a chane to earn an opportunity at the World Championship at Luck of the Draw. Because if you think you’re man enough, let’s find out. My brother George is looking for a fight. So why don’t you take him on. Man to man. You beat George, I’ll give you the shot. Fair and square.”

“The Iron Man” Tim Westybrook versus “Iron Fist” Dan DaLay w/ Eric Tyler

We come out of the Steve DeColt promo for the Television Championship match. So far, DaLay has been a monster with the Television Championship and it continued here. Westybrook showed some good power, some good heart, but ultimately he was not a match for DaLay, who put Westybrook down with the DaLay Down and got his third defense of the Television Championship.

We are thrown backstage to where the World Tag Team Champions, Jack & Alex DeColt are standing by.

J. DeColt, “In just a couple of minutes, Alex and I are going to make that long walk to the ring for one hell of a contest. We’re going to make that long walk to the ring to put our World Tag Team Titles on the line against The Soldiers of Fortune. We know how good they are. They’re the former World Tag Team champions. We know what they are capable of. We know what they are willing to do. And we’re ready to beat them, to put this thing to bed once and for all.”

A DeColt, “So I hope the Soldiers of Fortune are ready. Because we’re coming for him. Tonight, we prove that the DeColt family is better than the School of Tradition and we end this war.”

The World Tag Team Title match had the fans really into it. The Soldiers of Fortune, Chance and Fate were big and physical and isolated Jack from Alex. The fans in the crowd were right behind Jack, trying to get him to power up. To fire up. To fight back and Jack kept trying, but Chance and Fate were willing to take every cheap shot they could. Illegally entering the ring, pulling Alex off the apron before Jack could make the tag -- all of the classic heel tag team moves.

Jack was able to dodge an attack and make the big tag to Alex who came in like a house of fire and the people exploded to see the big DeColt took the fight right to Chance and Fate and Eric Tyler was screaming on the outside. Eric Tyler hopped onto the apron and distracted the referee while Dan DaLay hit the ring. He laid out Jack and then laid out Alex and left both DeColts laying. He rolled out of the ring and Chance made the cover and we have new tag team champions.

sphQ2H2.jpg

JiFk67I.jpg2rRLoHs.jpg4Qazmj6.jpg

Jack is laying on the outside of the ring and Alex is inside the ring. DaLay rolled back into the ring and stood over his former best friend. He shook his head as Eric Tyler looks in at Dan DaLay. He gives the thumb down and DaLay nodded. He went to work on Alex. Several boots before lifting him up and hitting the DaLay Down. Security hit the ring and the School of Tradition hightailed it.

More seriously, sorry to hear your apathy to the product. Maybe you should try out something different like lucha libre next time around?

I'm actually booking a women's lucha libre company with Dark_Raider in a two player dyansty right now. It's just traditional lucha libre, but we're having a lot of fun (he's booking a Japanese women's company)

Never cared about the DeColts or the Stones, to be honest. I mean, second generation talent and wrestling families, sure, but when they own promotions or a promotion is built around them.... just, no. I may be a bit too jaded because of WWE and the McMahons, but still, no.

I've been silently stalking this diary and although I'm not happy to see it go, I'm not that sad about it either #sorrynotsorry

Speaking of our joint save/diary, I'm running WINNOW but probably hired too many big bruisers for that type of product. Blame Crusher Ichihara as my UC and company owner :D
